40 ans de rencontres d’Arles www.rencontres-arles.com
Desde hace 40 años la ciudad medieval de Arles situada al sur de Francia se convierte en la capital mundial de la fotografia. Acoge el que fue el primer festival de fotografia internacional. Durante los meses de verano podemos disfrutar de lo mejor y de mayor interés del panorama de la imagen fija. Les Rencontres d’Arles definen como sus objetivos prioritarios promover la creación artistica ,la presentación de últimas tendencias en sus diferentes ámbitos y el descubrimiento de nuevos talentos. Plazas públicas, escuelas, monumentos históricos y talleres abren sus puertas para ofrecer al visitante las ultimas tendencias que encontramos a nivel internacional. Este año se rinde homenaje a grandes clásicos como el humanista francés Willy Ronis que nos muestra la vida de la post guerra del Paris de los años 40 y 50. También encontramos a Duane Michaels que mediante sus fotógrafias fabricadas se aparta de la realidad desarollándo relatos muy personales provenientes del yo más profundo con el único fin de potenciar enigmas. Como invitada especial para conmemorar el 40 aniversario del festival este año encontramos a la fotógrafa estadounidense Nan Goldin con su balada de la dependencia sexual(Ballad of sexual dependency), la cual nos abre las puertas a su controvertido albúm familiar. Además de otros muchos grandes como Martin Parr, Brian Griffin, Antoine dÁgata, Jim Goldberg, Eric Rondepierre... etc entre otros. Arles acogerá hasta el trece de septiembre las 60 exposiciones que conforman el festival. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------For 40 years the medieval city of Arles in the Routh of France has become the world capital of photography, playing host to the first international festival of photography. During the summer months we can enjoy the biggest and best examples from the photographic panorama. Les Recontres d’Arles define their priorities as promoting artistic creation, presenting the latest tendencies in various circles and the discovery of new talent. Public squares, schools, historic monuments and workshops open their doors to offer the visitor the latest visions at an international level. This year they pay homage to the great classics such as French humanist Willy Ronis and his images of post war Paris during the 40s and 50s. we also find Duane Michaels who through his manufactured photographs moves away from reality by developing very personal stories from the deepest sense of self with the sole aim of giving potency to enigmas. As a special guest to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the festival, this year we also find US photographer Nan Goldin with his Ballad of Sexual Dependency, which opens the doors to his controversial family album. Plus there are other greats such as Martin Parr, Brian Griffin, Antoine d’Agata, Jim Goldberg and Eric Rondepierre, among others. Arles will play host to the 60 exhibitions making up the festival until September 3.

Al igual que la gastronomía y buenos brebajes , Galicia es rica en música subterránea de calidad, en mi ciudad natal hay un dicho “ y para comer, Lugo” , os puedo asegurar que es cierto, ternera Galega, pescados de buena calidad, mariscos sabrosos, pulpo a Feira, legumbres deliciosas, infinidad de verduras y la inconfundible empanada, pero amigos no todo es comida, por que no “y para salir, Lugo”, “y para bailar, Lugo”, “y para la música, Lugo”, tenemos tanta calidad músico-cultural como platos a elegir. Rock, Pop, Electrónica, Rap, Metal, Reggae, Folk, Jazz, sin olvidarnos de DJ’s, MC’s, Productores, Clubs y Promotores de eventos que luchan por hacerse un hueco tanto a nivel nacional como internacional sin pecar de la “radio-fórmula”. Pero no quiero hablar solamente de Lugo, si no de toda Galicia, esta tierra mágica y única a la que amo desde que tengo uso de razón, centrándome en los estilos que más conozco e incluyéndome como parte de la historia underground de esta tierra de gaitas, dictadura ya pasada y “chapapote” pegadizo. Está emergiendo una buena cantidad de música negra, que tras años de trabajo y lucha contracorriente empieza a recoger frutos, dentro del rap, por ejemplo grupos como Delahoja están escalando puestos altos con su mestizaje lingüístico: Gallegos y Árabes unidos por el rap, Dios que te Crew con años ya rapeando en gallego y creando escuela, el Puto Coke y su Licor Café Crew, dando caña y mostrándonos sus brebajes mas preciados como Wöyza reina del soul/rap, Drumdrama, Rack Eterno, Limbo, dj Jooz y su Soulsation Radio, Dr. Valda, Anthony, Xoko Suizo, Pániko en las calles, Pillo Astuto todos ellos haciendo ruido desde Vigo para el resto del mundo, K.A.O.S , Karmasound, Jal-beats, El Seis, dj Alex, Anubis, Salvador Medina, Jotace, dj Herran y Mr Fishman, nueva y vieja hornada de músicos, dj´s y M.C que poco a poco han ido exportando su buen sonido desde Lugo. Hablemos de la Capital Gallega, Santiago D.C., capitaneada por uno de los MC’s / Productores más carismáticos, Hevi, que junto con Caldeirada forman Malandromeda, Juanito Broders cortándote las penas con sus letras llenas de ironía y reales como la vida misma, dj Kaze siempre buscando la fórmula perfecta entre rap y electrónica, dj Cro, Shelar, Furnier, experimental y oscuro, a igual que sus vecinos de la Coruña Overgroundz , no podemos cerrar la escena rap sin nombrar al colectivo Higher Club, Rap, Dub y Electrónica, calidad 100%, representando tanto en clubs como festivales y difundiéndose por las ondas en su programa de Radio La Caraba, y a La Cochina, Trip Hop y downtempo muy contagiable. Quiero hacer una última mención a los que no están habitualmente por su tierra pero que desde la distancia nos acompañan con su sonido, Granpurismo, representando desde Suiza con buen Rap, el señor Maese Trucco, desde Donosti, verborreando Ragga/Rap de última ornada, también desde Ginebra (Suiza) a toda la Crew de Mafia Gallega por su apoyo a la escena desde su web. Como podéis comprobar, algo se mueve en Galicia a parte de empanada y vino de la casa, aunque se diga que la escena clubbing electrónica esté de capa caída, no podrán con las ganas, la energía y el buen hacer de los de aquí. A nivel de productores, Dj´s y Live acts, estamos en un momento de productividad máxima. Me remonto a Humanoid, impulsor de este sonido y reconvertido en estos momentos en uno de los más solicitados productores del país, Dr Think, Dj, productor y promotor de eventos culturales desde hace más de una década y compartiendo desvelos sonoros con sus compañeros Telémaco, grupo audio-visual de larga trayectoria y Safari Orquestra, que combina electrónica, Rap y Trip Hop con letras en Gallego, Alex Vázquez, Mauro García, Payball, Edwar, Karras Martinez, Juan Chousa, Kanike, se unen a los nombrados antes en representación Lucense. Por último, la que es para mi la mejor distribuidora de música underground del noroeste, 22 Atico, “Save the vinyl Abel, eres grande”. Desde la Coruña Ino y Grobas encabezan por su conocida faceta de Dj´s, productores y promotores de la escena Herculina, sin olvidar a Xan Barral, Diego Santos, Roi, Pablo Cubeiro, Cuco, A.G.M!, Jake Jack, San Román, Astroboyz, Mecanica Celeste, Darkrow (Santiago D.C), house y techno en todas sus vertientes de calidad. Festivales como el ya asentado 981, el reciente Move, Frequencies, y clubs como Fanzine, Telefunken, Playa, Superclub, dan muestra de que hoy por hoy la buena electrónica aterriza en Alvedro.
No podemos olvidarnos del colectivo Usmiko, realizando eventos y programando en clubs, ahora con centro de operaciones en Verín y al mando de su impresionante “Casa de los Sueños”, esa buena gente de Ourense haciéndolo bien durante años: Yayo, Buba, Green & Orange, Morce, Torres y Dani Deluxe. Cada día el Reggae esta más presente en tierras Gallegas y no por casualidad, tanto verde tendrá algo que ver con que al conectar con grupos Portugueses se obtenga una mezcla tan exquisita como es el cannabis al papel…Bush Doctor tienen buena parte de culpa en todo esto y como no el pedazo de evento que organizan, Foundation Reggae Festival, internacionalmente conocido, Dandy Fever, Kogito y Son do Galpón, la Kinki reggae, Selectah in helicopta sound, Eu-G, Increpula, todos ellos locos del soundsystem y los mixtapes. Creo que no están todos los que son ni son todos los que están, pero si una gran parte de la escena, que da muestra de que aquí se cuece algo más que centolos y pulpo con cachelos…
Just as with its gastronomy and good brews, Galicia is rich in quality underground music. In the city of my birth there’s a saying: if you want to eat, go to Lugo. And I can tell you that it’s true; Galician beef, good quality fish, delicious seafood, octopus, tasty pulses, an infinite variety of vegetables and of course the pasties. But it’s not all food, friends, because ‘if you want to go out, then go to Lugo’, ‘to dance, Lugo’, ‘and for music, Lugo’. We have as many high quality musical cultures as there are dishes to choose from; rock, pop, electronic, rap, metal, reggae, folk, jazz – and not forgetting the DJs, MCs, producers, clubs and events promoters who fight to carve themselves out a niche both at national and international level without resorting to the modes of formulaic radio. I don’t just want to talk about Lugo, however, but the whole of Galicia, this magical, unique land I’ve loved ever since I developed the use of reason, focusing on the styles

Bajamos al sur, O Marisquiño da nombre a un festival underground, además de ser un rico manjar que nos da de comer a tantos gallegos, Pontevedra y Vigo , marinera e industrial, nos trae la electrónica de Calite, David Granha, Subsotano, José González, Breixo, Moe, Dani rivera, Oliveira, Víctor Alvarez, Wasilkoski, Ningunos, Galis 115 , Sinsal Audio y como no, el colectivo Arkestra, combinando Breaks, electrónica y Rap en cantidades iguales, alumnos todos del que ha sido la pieza clave en la Electrónica de Vigo, Viktor Flores, periodista, Dj y ex programador de unos de los clubs referentes de la escena Gallega / Portuguesa, Vademecwm, 12 + 1 no son pocos.

I know the most and including a little of the underground history belonging to this place of bagpipes, dictators past and sticky ‘tar’. A good quantity of black music is emerging, now beginning to show fruit after years of work and battling against the flow. Within rap, for example, groups like Delahoja are climbing high with their linguistic fusions of Gallego (the dialect of Galicia) and Arabic; then there’s Dios que te Crew, who have been rapping in Gallego for many years; el Puto Coke and his Licor Café Crew, bigging it up and showing us its greatest concoctions, like Woyza queen of soul/rap, Drumdrama, Rack Eterno, Limbo, DJ Jooz and his Soulsation Radio, Dr. Valda, Anthony, Xoxo Suizo, Paniko en las Calles, Pillo Astuto – all of them making noise from Vigo for the rest of the world – K.A.O.S, Karmasound, Jal-beats, El Seis, DJ Alex, Anubis, Salvador Medina, Jotace, DJ Herran and Mr Fishman; a collection of old and new musicians, DJs and MCs who little by little have been exporting their great sound from Lugo. Let’s talk about the capital, Santiago DC, captained by one of the most charismatic MCs and producers, Hevi, who along with Caldeirada make up Malandromeda, Juanito Broders lifting the weight with his ironic lyrics, as real as life; DJ Kaze always searching for the perfect formula between rap and electronic; DJ Cro, Shelar, Furnier, experimental and dark, like his Coruna neighbours Overgroundz; and we can’t close the rap scene without mentioning the Higher Club collective – rap, dub and electronic, 100% quality, represented as much in the clubs as in festivals and across the radio waves in their programme on Radio La Caraba, and La Cochina, trip hop and very contagious downtempo. I want to make a final mention of those who aren’t walking their land habitually but who walk with us from a distance with their sounds; Granpurismo, representing from Switzerland with good rap; senor Maese Trucco, from Donosti, making the latest ragga/rap, also from Geneva; and the whole crew of Mafia Gallega for their support of the scene via their Web. As you can see, something other than pasties and house wine is going on in Galicia. Although they say the electronic clubbing scene is coming down, they can’t say the same about the desire, the energy, the quality of the people here. In terms of production, DJs and Live acts, we are at maximum productivity. I put Humanoid back together; the source of this sound, it has now been reconverted into one of the most sought after producers in the country, Dr Think; DJ, producer and cultural events promoter for more than a decade, sharing sounds with his colleagues Telemaco, a long-standing audiovisual
group, and Safari Orquestra, who combine electronic, rap and trip hop with lyrics in Gallego; Alex Vazquez, Mauro Garcia, Payball, Edwar, Karras Martinez, Juan Chousa, Kanike, join those named before as representing Lugo. Finally we have 22 Atico, for me the best distributor of underground music from the north east. ‘Save the vinyl, Abel, you’re the man.’

From Coruna Ino and Grobas lead the way for their well known facets with DJs, producers and promoters on the Herculina scene; not forgetting Xan Barral, Diego Santos, Roi, Pablo Cubeiro, Cuco, A.G.M!, Jake Jack, San Roman, Astroboyz, Mecanica Celeste, Darkrow (Santiago DC), total quality house and techno. Festivals like 981, the recent Move, Frequencies, and clubs like Fanzine, Telefunken, playa and Superclub, prove that today good electronic has landed in Alvedro.

Going south, O Marisquino gives its name to an underground festival as well as a rich delicacy a lot of us Gallegos eat. Pontevedra and Vigo, marine and industrial, bring us the electronic of Calite, David Granha, Subsotano, José González, Breixo, Moe, Dani rivera, Oliveira, Víctor Alvarez, Wasilkoski, Ningunos, Galis 115 , Sinsal Audio and of course the Arkestra collective, combining breaks, electronic and rap in equal measures, all students of the key piece in Vigo electronica, Viktor Flores, journalist, DJ and ex programmer of one of the most renowned clubs on the Gallego/ Portuguese scene, Vademecwm, 12 + 1 no son pocos. We can’t forget the Usmiko collective, putting on events and programming in clubs; at the moment their centre of operations is in Verin and, from their impressive ‘house of dreams’, these good Ourense people have been making good for years: Yayo, Buba, Green & Orange, Morce, Torres and Dani Deluxe. Every day reggae becomes more present on Galician soil and not by accident; so much green must have something to do with connecting with Portuguese groups to obtain a mix as exquisite as cannabis and papers. Bush Doctor takes a lot of the blame for this, not to mention the massive and internationally known event, the Foundation Reggae Festival. Dandy Fever, Kogito and Son do Galpon, la Kinki reggae, Selectah in helicopta sound, Eu-G, Increpula; all of them crazy for soundsystem and mixtapes. I don’t think I could possibly cover everybody and everything but I hope to have shown you a large part of the scene here and that there’s more than just octopus cooking here.

primera vez que vi a Moose nos citamos fuera de la estación de metro de Plaça Catalunya; su carácter desenfadado se me hizo evidente de inmediato. La conversación fluía y me lo contó todo sobre su desarrollo como artista y músico. Cuando caminas por la calle con Moose, percibes que sus ojos viajan de lado a lado, que estudian las calles y los relieves en una búsqueda constante de texturas y tierra para inspirar su mente creativa. Cada fachada es un lienzo potencial, la tierra y la polución su pintura. A lo largo de los años, su capacidad observadora le ha dotado de mayor sabiduría sobre este procedimiento. Por ello, ha conseguido convertirlo en una técnica con éxito, creando preciosas obras de arte que destilan humor y hacen reflexionar. Todo empezó un día en una cocina mugrienta, donde Moose encontró un punto limpio en medio de una pared cubierta de suciedad. Cuando examinó la mancha más de cerca, rápidamente cayó en la cuenta de que estaba ante el único punto sin suciedad de toda la estancia. De repente, la visión que tenía de esa pared tan aburrida cambió por completo y vio el potencial creativo. El cerebro le hirvió con ideas sobre cómo transformar esa superficie indecorosa en una obra maestra. ¿Quién habría pensado que una marca perdida en una oscura pared inglesa podría dar pie a tanta creatividad? Una vez su inspiración llegó a la calle, empezó experimentando con calcetines sucios y trapos. Acabó pasándose a los cepillos metálicos y probando con los fregasuelos, pero abandonó la idea rápidamente por motivos medioambientales. Se mantuvo fiel a su filosofía utilizando plantillas y agua a presión, lo que le permitía expresar su visión de forma menos destructiva hacia el lienzo urbano y el medio ambiente. Quería una forma artística que diera a conocer la voz de la calle como lo hace el graffiti, pero sin las asociaciones negativas que alguna gente tiene de esta forma artística – especialmente la cuestión de“desfigurar”los espacios públicos. Mientras muchos ven el graffiti como un coste para la ciudad, o sencillamente como una molestia, Moose quiere que la gente se abra a la posibilidad de apreciar algo de nuestro entorno más inmediato – como una pared de la ciudad – que generalmente pasa desapercibido para la mayoría. A través de su arte, Moose intenta reavivar la curiosidad de la gente acerca de su propio espacio, a la par que busca levantar conciencias sobre nuestra responsabilidad con el medio ambiente. Un ejemplo de esta ingenuidad tan efectiva puede ser una plantilla de algo sencillo como la hierba, lavada a presión en un bloque de la ciudad para reflejar la vegetación que antiguamente campaba a sus anchas en este espacio. Elabora comentarios visuales acerca de lo que un día estuvo ahí con la esperanza de inspirar a los viandantes para que no sólo vean, sino realmente miren, el entorno que les rodea. La idea de crear algo bonito en un espacio generalmente olvidado me recuerda al artista brasileó Zezâo, que pinta formas orgánicas en espacios inutilizados, creando una galería pública para la gente que, por lo general, no tiene más remedio que vivir en un barrio insípido. Zezâo crea belleza en una zona que, de no ser por él, estaría desolada. Además, este arte – cuyo impacto aumenta cuanto más sucias y desagradables sean las paredes, resalta la polución. Por ejemplo, Moose me hizo un comentario acerca de una obra de arte de Alexandre Órion (a quien ha llamado para colaborar en el futuro), que ha pintado una montaña de cráneos en fila en un túnel de Sâo Paolo. El proceso de limpiar la
superficie ayuda a captar la atención de la gente y les obliga a que, por lo menos, reflexionen sobre unos asuntos ecológicos que son bastante serios. En el caso de Orion, intentó exhibir el impacto negativo de las emisiones de los coches. Como resultado, las autoridades limpiaron todos los túneles de Sâo Paolo. Este fue un caso con final feliz, pero la mayor parte de las veces Moose sigue teniendo problemas con la policía. Desgraciadamente, las autoridades públicas no acaban de comprender ciertos tipos de expresión pública. El graffiti invertido de Moose se hizo famoso porque las autoridades tuvieron que esforzarse para encontrar un resquicio legal y poder amonestarlo por limpiar. Hace poco, Ray Ban le contrató para realizar obras en el Born. Moose disfruta con esto porque tiene la oportunidad de viajar y trabajar al mismo tiempo. Tras su último periplo por Barcelona y Madrid, Moose viajó a Eslovaquia, a donde iba para crear una obra cuya intención era presionar para que se reabran los canales que cerraron los soviéticos hace muchos años. Además de crear graffitis ecológicos, Moose es uno de los fundadores de Soundclash, sello discográfico de Leeds (Inglaterra). La música es la otra gran pasión de Moose, ya que cree que puede cambiar la perspectiva de alguien. También es DJ y ha actuado por todo el mundo. Aunque ya no está tan involucrado con el sello como antes, sigue divulgando su amor por la música con una característica de su arte: el silencio. El descanso de la música, como el espacio negativo, está en consonancia con el tema central de su trabajo. Si no sigue tan metido en el sello discográfico es porque se cansó de que la gente tuviera ansias de fama y de dinero, y no de crear música. Moose siempre será creativo, sea con su música o con su graffiti. Tiene una mentalidad tremendamente abierta, le pica la curiosidad por el mundo y parece que siempre tiene un momento para cualquier amigo, sea nuevo o viejo. Me ha caído realmente bien. Me gusta su arte y la energía que destila. La única pregunta que se me olvidó hacerle fue: “¿Por qué Moose?”
voice to life, as graffiti does, but removes the negative associations some people connect to it, especially concerning the issue of defacing public property. While some may view graffiti as a cost for the city, or simply a nuisance, Moose hopes to open our minds to the possibility of appreciating something from our immediate environment (even a city wall) which is generally overlooked by most. Through his art Moose seeks to rekindle one’s curiosity about his own space and create a new sense of awareness about our responsibility to the environment. An example of his ingenuity can be seen in a stencil of something as simple as grass, power-washed onto a city block to resemble the vegetation that had once existed in this space. Hoping to inspire those passing by to view their immediate, often ignored surroundings in a new way, he aims to make a visual commentary to passers by about what was once there. This idea of creating something beautiful in a generally neglected area reminds me of Brazilian graffiti artist Zezão, who paints very organic shapes in neglected areas, creating a public gallery for people who are normally forced to look at an unappealing neighbourhood - creating beauty in an otherwise desolate area. The art, because most successful on grungy or scuzzy walls, highlights the pollution.

first time I saw Moose, we met outside the Placa Catalunya metro station; his easy going manner was immediately evident. Conversation flowed and I learned all about his development as an artist and musician. As you walk through the streets with Moose, you notice his eyes gliding from side to side, across the streets and surfaces, looking for textures and dirt to inspire his creative mind. Each facade is a potential canvas, the dirt and pollution his medium. Throughout the years of looking, he developed more and more understanding of his procedure, moulding it into a successful technique that creates beautiful pieces that are both good-humoured and thought-provoking. The process all began one day in a dirty kitchen where he noticed one clean spot on a filthy wall. When Moose examined the blotch more carefully, he quickly realized that it was in fact the only unstained area in the entire space. He suddenly changed his normal views of this boring wall and could see the potential for creation. His brain fired with ideas about how to transform this grimy surface into a masterpiece. Who would have thought that one stray mark on an obscure wall in England could inspire such creativity? Taking this new inspiration with him to the streets, he began experimenting with old socks and rags. Eventually he switched to metal brushes and playing with patio cleaner but quickly dismissed this idea because of the environmental implications. Remaining true to his philosophy, he decided that using stencils and a jet wash would allow him to express his vision in a manner that was less destructive to the urban canvas and environment. He wanted an art form that brought the street’s
For instance, Moose commented on a piece from Brazililan artist Alexandre Órion (who Moose contacted to do a future collaboration) who created a lined up pile of skulls in a car tunnel in São Paolo. The process of cleaning the surface helps catch one’s eye on the street and forces people to at least think about some very serious ecological issues. In Órion’s case, he aimed to showcase the negative impact of car emissions. The result? The authorities cleaned all the tunnels in São Paolo. This was a successful case. Much of the time, Moose still runs into incidents with the police. Unfortunately, authority figures simply have problems with public expression. Moose’s reverse graffiti became more widely known after the authorities struggled to find a real reason to punish him when he was caught cleaning. Slowly companies such as Smirnoff and XBox began to call. In San Francisco, Moose collaborated with Zeroh Design to work alongside Green Works, a plantbased environmentally friendly cleaner with biodegradable ingredients. Recently Ray Bann commissioned him to do works in the Born and Moose enjoys these jobs because they allow him the opportunity to travel and work. After his latest visit to Barcelona and Madrid, Moose headed to Slovakia to create a piece pushing for the reopening of the canals closed by the Soviets many years ago. Besides creating more environmentally-friendly graffiti art, Moose is one of the founders of the Leeds-based Soundclash record label. Music is Moose’s other big passion in life. He believes that music can change one’s perspective. He is also a DJ and has performed all over the world. Though he is no longer so involved with the record label, Moose carries his love about music into an aspect of his art: the silence. The break in the music, like the negative space, holds true to the central theme in his artwork. He is no longer as involved in the record label. He became tired of the drive for fame and money rather than focusing on the music. Moose will always be creative, whether it is with music or his graffiti. He has such an open personality, has a curiosity about the world and seems to always have an open ear to any new or old friends. I really like the guy. I like his art, his vibe. The only question I forgot to ask was, “Why Moose?”

día, perdiéndome aposta por el Born en uno de mis paseos, avisté un pequeño estudio detrás del Mercat de Santa Catalina con acuarelas llenas de color, joyería adornada con ilustraciones y formas geométricas, y unos escuetos trozos de cerámica color azul claro que tranquilamente podrían haber salido de uno de mis sueños. Estaba intrigado. Pocos días después, quedé con Gastón Liberto, un ilustrador, pintor y escultor argentino. La sinceridad y la franqueza de Gastón hicieron que hubiera un auténtico diálogo sobre su trabajo- muy interesante, por cierto. Me enseñó esculturas de hace una década, las que creó cuando llegó por primera vez a esta ciudad; también vi sus pinturas al óleo más recientes, que son una fusión de todas sus creaciones artísticas de los últimos diez años. Sus primeros trabajos tenían influencias muy marcadas de sus vivencias infantiles en Lincoln, el barrio bonaerense donde vivía su padre. Este barrio entraba en erupción cada año con un carnaval donde son típicas las “carosas”, unas enormes esculturas de papel, que inspiraron su trabajo con el papier-maché en Barcelona. Como cualquier otro artista, Gastón ha evolucionado; actualmente, combina las “carosas”, coloridas, infantiles y juguetonas, con influencias más oscuras y profundas, y conceptos más filosóficos; cosas que no puede comunicar con la palabra. Gastón se reta a sí mismo constantemente para experimentar con los materiales – sean madera, lienzo, papier-maché, miniaturas de barro, acuarela o óleo – y con distintas corrientes de pensamiento, influencia directa de su etapa universitaria, en la que estudió filosofía. Su trabajo ha obtenido el debido reconocimiento en Barcelona. Ha estado en la portada de la revista ROJO, en la serie limitada de camisetas de la revista Lamona para el Sonar 2008 y en muchos eventos colectivos más. Hace poco, tras pasar muchos meses de trabajo creando un espacio que funcionara como laboratorio artístico, ha abierto Generosos de Punta con la diseñadora de joyería Gloria Gastaldi: un espacio común para que los artistas creen y ocasionalmente colaboren en las obras. Trabajar en el mismo estudio permite que se transfiera la energía creativa entre ellos. Recientemente, Gastón y Gloria dieron la bienvenida a un nuevo miembro, la ceramista Laura Lasheras. El estudio está abierto a diario; me permito el lujo de sugerirle a todo paseante del Born que se acerque por ahí y lo vea con sus propios ojos.

day doing my usual lost and found sort of walk through the Born, I noticed a little studio behind Catalina Mercado with colourful watercolours, jewellery adorned with illustrations and geometric shapes, and crisp light blue coloured ceramic pieces that could have strolled right from a daydream. I was intrigued. A few days later, I met up with Gaston Liberto, an illustrator, painter and sculptor from Argentina. Gaston’s sincerity and openness resulted in a very interesting and real dialogue about his work. He showed me sculptures from a decade ago, that he created when he first arrived in this city; as well as his most recent oil paintings which are a fusion of all his artistic creations from the past ten years. His early work is mostly influenced by early childhood experiences in Lincoln, his father’s neighbourhood in Buenos Aires. Every year the neighbourhood erupted into a carnival with huge paper sculptures called “carosas”, the inspiration for Gaston’s early paper-mache work in Barcelona. Gaston has evolved as any artist will during the course of his life. In his current work, he combines this colourful, childish, playful, “carosa” - influenced work with his darker, deeper, more philosophical concepts; things that he cannot communicate in words.

Gaston constantly challenges himself experimenting with different mediums (wood, canvas, papermache, clay models, watercolour and oil) and different trains of thought, influenced by his time in university when he studied philosophy. His work has been noticed as well in Barcelona. He has been on the cover of ROJO Magazine, limited edition Lamona Magazine t-shirts for Sonar 2008, as well as many group shows in Barcelona. He recently opened Generosos de Punta with jewellery-maker Gloria Gastaldi, having spent many months on this labour of love to create a space that would act as an artistic laboratory; a common space for these artists to create and occasionally collaborate on pieces. Working in the same studio allows the creative energy to pass between them. Recently, Gaston and Gloria welcomed their new member, Laura Lasheras, a ceramic artist. The studio is open daily and I would suggest to anyone strolling through the Born, to stroll by and take a look for themselves.

Mmmmmm… MAKITO HIRATSUKA, japonés afincado en Girona, nos habla de su experiencia
E
xiste el pensamiento social de que muchos artistas pasan hambre... Contradictoriamente, hemos descubierto como dos artes tan sugerentes, como son el arte y la comida, se funden con mucha frescura y movidas por un mismo apetito de expresión. Graffiti de helados (Dellicious - Portugal) y azúcar (Shane Waltener - UK), esculturas de chocolate (Chocolate Exhibition ’07 por Naoto Fukusawa - 21 Design Sight Gallery, Japón), cuadros hechos con Smarties (Prudence Emma Staite ’09 - V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green, Londres), Nuggets de pollo y Hot Dogs en vitrinas (Exposición BANKSY ’09 ‘The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill’), McDonalds de la mano del arte africano (Jake & Dinos Chapman - McArt ’09 Tate Gallery, London) o el stencil propagandístico de antipublicidad contra potentes compañías como McDonalds (diseñador chileno Sebastián Arancibia aka ACUARIO - proyecto Contragolpe)... El arte efímero y comestible se encuentra en las calles, en paredes de museos y galerías de arte, en nuestras mesas... ¡e incluso sobre nuestros cuerpos! La tradición japonesa del Nyotaimori, “presentación en cuerpo de mujer” o “cuerpo sushi,” es el arte de comer sashimi o sushi directamente desde el cuerpo de una mujer, tradicionalmente desnuda. Puede que tanto el arte plástico como el culinario sean innecesarios para la supervivencia, pero ¿quién puede vivir como humano sin ellos? Para mi lo más “relevante” es el amor, la pasión y el humor”.

Contrary to that, we have discovered how two different art forms, that of food and art, merge happily and are moved by the same appetite for expression. Ice-cream graffiti (Dellicious – Portugal) and sugar (Shane Waltener – UK), chocolate sculptures (Chocolate Exhibition 07 by Naoto Fukusawa – 21 Design Sight Gallery, Japan), pictures made from Smarties (Prudence Emma Staite 09 – V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green, London), chicken Nuggets and Hot Dogs in display cases (BANKSY Exhibition 09, The Village pet Store and Charcoal Grill), McDonalds at the hand of African art (Jake and Dinos Chapman – McArt 09 Tate Gallery, London) or the anti-publicity propaganda stencils against powerful companies like McDonalds (Chilean designer Sebastian Arancibia AKA ACUARIO – Contragolpe project)... Ephemeral, edible art can be found in the streets, on the walls of museums and art galleries, on our tables and even on our bodies! The Japanese tradition of Nyotaimori, ‘presentation on the female body’ or ‘body sushi’ is the art of eating sashimi or sushi directly from the body of a woman, traditionally naked. Nantaimoro refers to the same practice but from a man’s body.
MAKITO HIRATSUKA, a Japanese national residing in Gerona, talks of his experience as a recognised master of baking and the art of sugar. “When I was 12 I saw a world baking and sugar art competition on TV. The work was unforgettable and I decided to become a chef. I began in Japan and came to Europe four years ago. I learned the classic and traditional in France and then came to Spain to learn at the vanguard of baking, learning new products and techniques. My time in El Bulli (the restaurant of famous chef Ferran Adria) was the most amazing experience. Also, my participation in the World baking Cup in Lyon, representing the Spanish team, was one of the most important achievements of my career. At the moment I love making pieces of sugar art in the restaurant, so the customers can really enjoy those moments. I’m not inspired by anything in particular, but my imagination springs from the idea of a particular word; that stays in my brain and gets the motor going… from that the pictures simply spring from my hand. It might be that the plastic arts and the culinary are unnecessary for survival but who could live as a human without them? For me, love, passion and humour, are most relevant.”

para nuestro proyecto musical. Impartimos algunos talleres en la sala/ galería NIU (Poble Nou) y ahí mismo hicimos también algunos conciertos experimentales y muy abiertos, con colaboraciones de otros músicos invitados improvisando. Siempre lo hemos hecho para aprender, disfrutar y conocer gente, no ha sido nunca una cuestión de nuestro desarrollo personal como artista, ni escribimos canciones con letras demasiado personales o profundas, las escribimos entre todos, en español y alemán, y nos encanta usar juegos de palabras y humor.
Tras su reciente intervención en el festival sonar, su nombre está ¡por todas partes! Su idea original, fresca e inteligente, es del gusto de muchos y, sin duda, no deja lugar a la indiferencia...
Vemos mucha relación entre cocinar y hacer música, un gran ejemplo de ello fue nuestra intervención en el Niu, junto a Frank Rudow (batería del ex grupo Manta Ray) cocinando en directo mientras tocábamos y ‘loopeábamos’ el sonido del proceso de preparación. Lo mejor fue que al final el público podía comerse el delicioso pollo al Curry que preparó.
“Nos conocimos en Erlangen, una pequeña ciudad alemana donde ambos estudiamos. Es un lugar bastante aburrido, así que teníamos amigos comunes e íbamos de fiesta. Empezamos a componer canciones tontas en casa, sólo con la guitarra acústica, otro amigo se juntó con el acordeón y comenzamos a tocar en fiestas, de ahí surgió nuestra primera banda: Los Kunka Boys. Al principio éramos sólo 4, después se unieron más y vino la influencia electrónica. Era finales de los 90, con las primeras producciones hechas por ordenador, con este proyecto combinábamos ambos estilos. También tuvimos un programa en la emisora independiente Radio Zeta. En el 2001, Pau se trasladó a Barcelona y ambos colaboramos menos... siempre que venía a visitarle hacíamos demasiada fiesta, jeje, con otro amigos nuestros que viven aquí. Realizamos entonces proyectos en solitario y por separado (como lo de Wireless Artist, nombre que surge de mis constantes problemas con los cables, jeje). Entre el 2005 me trasladé también aquí y volvimos a crear, primero con Wireless Artist y después un montón de cosas más llegaron, hicimos música para teatro y empezamos a colaborar con El Club de Los Astronautas (con David Apcel). Decidimos pillar un local para tener un estudio y de ahí surgió el nombre, del deseo de fundar un Instituto: dar cursos, talleres, realizar instalaciones, aprender de otros... Siempre hemos estado involucrados en varias cosas y muy diversas, por eso no queríamos ser sólo un grupo. INSTITUT FATIMA significa originalmente: Institut for Advance Technology in Music and Art. Finalmente, tuvimos que abandonar el estudio y decidimos usar el nombre
El set para Sonar estaba bastante estructurado y queremos seguir esta vía, pero sin duda partimos de la improvisación en muchas de nuestras intervenciones y durante la creación. Nos gusta esto del elemento sorpresa y la conexión galáctica con el universo… incluso un error puede transformarse en algo valioso. Nos gusta mucho el trabajo del guitarrista Eugene Chadbourne, gran improvisador con mucho humor y de Sun Ra, el gran compositor de Free- Jazz ¡que llegó a ponerles antenas a sus músicos! Nos gustaría hacer cosas más minimalistas, pero siempre vamos al máximo, lo llamamos ‘Autoestima Sobresaturada’. Musicalmente somos my eclécticos, pero si tuviéramos que compararnos a algún grupo sería Stereo Total (Alem/Fr), tenemos el mismo espíritu retro y ‘barato’ en las producciones, aunque somos menos Pop. Nos gustan también los crescendos y momentos orquestados apasionados. Nos comparan bastante a la banda española Astrud.

Lo de Wireless Artist es un proyecto independiente (como nuestra instalación de Sonarmática, en el Sonar de este año: react-visión con webcams, Wii-mode, el uso de tarjetas como controladores de música tangibles que varían el sonido según su posición, la react-ball… ¡todo sin midi!) aunque muchas veces lo aplicamos a nuestros directos también, nos encanta el hecho de que haya visión y dinamismo en escena y no sólo nosotros con ordenadores, es fácil de utilizar, no costoso y muy efectivo. En un futuro próximo queremos investigar más, junto a David del Club de Los Astronautas, como la música afecta al cerebro y viceversa (Brain Orchestra World premiere BBC), a ver si podemos mandar la música directamente al cerebro del público y evitamos los problemas de limitación de sonido en algunos espacios. Existen numerosas investigaciones en las universidades y los resultados parecen pura ciencia ficción... También, David está desarrollando un proyecto para ir a la Luna y comunicarse con extraterrestres, pero es un viaje largo de 23.000 años

decided to use the name for our music project. We gave a few workshops in the showing room/ gallery NIU (Poble Nou) and we also did a few experimental, very open concerts there too; other musicians were invited along to collaborate and improvise with us. We’ve always loved to learn, to enjoy things and meet new people; it’s never been a question of our personal development as artists; we don’t really write lyrics that are too personal or deep. We write them together, in Spanish and German, and we love using puns and humour. Making music is like cooking. A good example of that was our appearance at Niu, alongside Frank Rudow (drummer from ex-group Manta Ray), cooking live while we played and looped the sound of the preparation. The best thing was that at the end the public were able to eat the delicious chicken curry he made. The Sonar set was pretty structured and we wanted to stay on that path but of course we do a lot of improvisation in many of our appearances and during the creative process. We like the element of surprise and the galactic connection with the universe… even a mistake can turn out to be valuable. We like the work of guitarist Eugene Chadbourne a lot; he’s a great improviser with a good sense of humour. And we like Sun Ra, the great free-jazz composer who put antennas on his musicians! We’d like to do more minimalist stuff but we’re always doing maximum; we call it ‘Over-saturated Self-esteem’. Musically we’re pretty eclectic but if we had to compare ourselves to anyone it would be Stereo Total (Germany/France). We have the same retro and ‘cheap’ spirit in terms of productions although we’re a little less pop. We also like crescendos and passionate orchestral moments. We are a lot like the Spanish band Astrud. The Wireless Artist is an independent project (like our Sonarmatica installation at Sonar this year: react-vision with web-cams, Wii-mode, the use of cards as tangible music controllers that change sound depending on their position, the react-ball… all without midi!) although a lot of the time we apply our live performances too. We love the fact that there’s vision and dynamism on the stage and not just us with computers; it’s easy to use and it’s very cost-effective. The resolution of the web-cams is low and sometimes doesn’t work but that just makes us react and take advantage of the unknown, an element of the game you lose when you use pads. Our first installation as Wireless Artist is called Everybody can be Wireless, depending on the total interaction of the public; which always makes the result unique.

“We met in Erlangen, a small German city where we both studied. It’s a pretty boring place so we had some friends in common and would go out looking to party. We began composing daft songs at home, just with an acoustic guitar. Another friend joined us with an accordion and we started to play at parties. That’s where our first band, Los Kunka Boys, came from. There were just 4 of us in the beginning but more joined afterwards and then came the electronic influence. It was the end of the 90s, with the first productions done on a computer, and with our project we combined the styles. We also had a programme on the independent station Radio Zeta. In 2001 Pau moved to Barcelona and so we collaborated less... whenever we did see each other we’d always party hard with other friends of ours who live here. During that time we worked on separate solo projects (like the Wireless Artist, a name that came from my constant troubles with cabling).
In 2005 I also moved here and we started creating, first with the Wireless Artist and then after that a load of things came our way. We did music for theatre and began collaborating with El Club de Los Astronautas (with David Apcel).
In the near future, alongside David from the Club de Los Astronautas, we want to investigate further how music affects the brain and vice versa (Brain Orchestra, World premiere BBC) to see if we can send music directly to the public’s brain and avoid the limitations of sound afforded by some places. A lot of research is going on in universities and the results seem like pure science fiction…
We decided to find a place to use as a studio and that’s where are name came from; the desire to found an Institute; to give classes and workshops, create installations, learn from others... we’ve always been involved in various, diverse things that’s why we don’t want to be just a group. INSTITUT FATIMA originally meant: Institut for Advance Technology in Music and Art. In the end we had to abandon the studio and we
Also, David is developing a project to go to the Moon and communicate with aliens, but it’s a long journey of 23,000 light years and he’s working on a conscience simulator to try and recreate it; we decided to collaborate with our idea of a disco on ‘the dark side of the Moon’. The Generalitat and other important organizations are already collaborating on projects like this, as much for science as for art. The most relevant to Pau is his son; what’s relevant to both of them is to grow, to learn more about music and to enjoy Barcelona.

The Amin Institute, opened in conjunction with San Francisco-based OMEID International, will serve the children of Afghanistan as an orphanage, school and medical facility. While in Afghanistan, Immortal Technique helped with final construction on the institute, procured supplies, hired staff and spread the word. The opening ceremony took place and the first students were enrolled. During his time in Kabul, he stayed in both a safe house and the home of a retired Afghan military officer, giving him further insight into the inner-workings of the country. You have to admire the resilience of their spirit, fighting again and again [against the Soviets, Taliban and Al Qaeda] to retain their independence and identity. If the situation worsens, and the people of Afghanistan are fully turned against the United States, it will not be a winnable war.”

RAZZMATAZZ 13 Jun ’09 BCN Según datos de la FAO (Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Agricultura y el Hambre) 1020 millones de personas en el mundo pasarán hambre este año… ¡y nosotros quejándonos! Aitor Sánchez, de Island Groove, realiza como cada año un evento de Hip Hop benéfico y en éste ha colaborado con Ayuda contra el Hambre, una organización humanitaria que ayuda a paliar el hambre, un mal que afecta a más de tres cuartas partes de nuestro planeta. Ahí estuvimos, unidos a un público que, aunque no mayoritario, si muy entregado. Disfrutamos de actuaciones tan potentes como la de los barceloneses Weleló y Marco Fonktana (de Aerolíneas Subterráneas), ambos con su habitual sentido del humor, además del tan esperado Puto Largo, nombre de peso ya dentro de la escena Hip Hop nacional. Un evento apetitoso y altruista, con mucho flow y rimas para quitar el hambre… ¡¡Música y Solidaridad!!
According to data from the FAO (the UN Organisation for Agriculture and Hunger) 1020m people in the World went hungry this year. And we think we’ve got something to complain about! Every year Aitor Sanchez of Groove Island sets up a benefit Hip Hop event, collaborating with Ayuda contra el Hambre (Help Against Hunger), a humanitarian organisation fighting against hunger, a problem affecting over three quarters of our planet. We were there, united with the public who, although not a huge majority, were 100% involved. We enjoyed some powerful performances, from the two Barcelonians, Welelo and Marco Fonktana (from Aerolineas Subterraneas), both displaying their usual sense of humour, to the long-awaited Puto Largo, a heavy-weight within the national Hip Hop scene. A tasty, altruistic event, with enough flow and rhymes to kill the hunger pangs. Music and Solidarity!

Miloopa has played great venues throughout Europe and performed many international festivals, as well as Collaborations with big names such as Dj First Rate (Us3, Morcheeba). This summer they will perform stages like Fete De La Musique Luxembourg, Be2gether Festival in Lithuania and Sziget Festival in Hungary. ESTE AÑO, el equipo Relevant recibió la concesión para tener un stand en el Sonar; un sueño hecho realidad y un proyecto que merecía mucho la pena. Un corta-pega de cinco horas vio cómo, de donde había un penoso stand con cuatro postes, emergía una obra maestra de los festivales. Las insípidas paredes grises se transformaron en espectros increíbles de colores – tan atractivos como un pájaro en pleno vuelo, aunque al mismo tiempo estático, valiente y desafiante. Con ojos ávidos, me empapé de los alrededores buscando comparación. La verdad es que no teníamos competencia, el stand brillaba con luz propia. La charla se desprendía de nuestra esquina como las burbujas de diálogo de un cómic y, con sonrisas amables y gestos invitadores, un stand con sabor a miel empezó a atraer a le gente, que se marchaba cargada de sonrisas y tesoros… Teníamos ganas de vivir, pero curiosamente la única cosa que llegaba hasta nosotros eran las vibraciones de la música que se transmitían por el suelo de cemento del pabellón. Sentí el calor y me moví hacia la ventana tras de mí; levanté la vista intentando acostumbrarla al torrente de luz que entraba… otro día caluroso más, ideal para un festival. Con el stand exaltado como un enjambre de abejorros, decidí que sería buena idea echarle un vistazo a la oferta del Sonar, y ahí me fui: con pocos dientes, un chaleco XS de chica y una jarra de cerveza ;-)

____________________________________ THIS YEAR, the Relevant crew were granted a stall at the Sonar festival; a dream and job well worth doing. A five hour cut n paste bonanza saw a pitiful 4-post stand turn from the depths of ugliness to a masterpiece of festival greatness. Its murky grey walls were transformed into dazzling arrays of spiralling colours, as eye-catching as a bird in flight, yet still, unmoving, bold and defiant. With eager eyes, I soaked up my surroundings, keen to trace comparison. The truth is we had no real competitors, the stall stood proud. Chatter oozed from its cove like the joyful speech bubbles of a cartoon comic and with kind smiles and offering gestures, our honey-pot of a stand lured the public in and we sent them packing with grins and treasures galore… We were hungry for life, yet strangely the only thing to grace our level was the music reverberating through the concrete floor below. Feeling the warmth, I moved towards the window behind me; I raised my eyes, letting them adjust to the bright light showering in… another hot day and just right for a festival… With the stall thriving like bumble-bees on a day trip, I decided it would be a good idea to check out what Sonar had to offer and off I went with few teeth, an extra-small lady’s vest top and a jug a beer ;-)

El PRIMER PLATO tiene que ser contundente, que llene, que tenga contenido y ese es Siglo 21 de Rne3, el programa presentado por Tomas Fernando Flores dedicado a la música contemporánea, por supuesto con alto contenido electrónico, que llevo escuchando como unos ¡¿doce años?!, ya ni me acuerdo…lo que si recuerdo es que cuando empecé a disfrutarlo allá por 1996 era casi increíble la mediocre oferta radiofónica del momento, escuchar todos los días a partir de las “diez de la mañana” a modo de desayuno dos horas de música electrónica ya sea en su vertiente más pop, experimental o underground, era un lujo, ni hablar de un Internet en plena fase de adaptación. Actualmente y después de todo este tiempo me lo creo y sigo disfrutando en un horario más de aperitivo (la una del mediodía) con la selección de música que nos ofrece este gran programa, que da un repaso a la actualidad musical del futuro o debería decir del presente, porque “el futuro empieza cada mañana al levantarse” predicaba un tal Jeff Mills en el primer recopilatorio de lo que iban a ser unos cuantos en forma de doble CD, selección muy resumida de lo que podemos encontrar en Siglo 21 que no solo presume de música si no que incorpora a su programa diario unas mini secciones dedicadas a la informática, el arte, los conflictos sociales y un curioso buzón de voz en el que cada día los protagonistas son los oyentes que exponen todo lo que se les pasa por la cabeza sin ningún tipo de prejuicios. Por supuesto el programa tiene su correspondiente representación en Internet donde podéis descargaros el podcast y escucharlo a cualquier hora. El SEGUNDO PLATO será simplemente diferente a el primero y será un gusto para los sentidos, cualidades que reúne sobradamente“Sabrosura”programa que emite Radio Gladis Palmera en el que podremos disfrutar de la mejor música mestiza o del mundo en todas sus vertientes, la mezcla es infinita, electrónica, salsa, mpb, cumbia, latin jazz, hip hop, funky brasilero y muchos más... juntos y revueltos en un programa que hará las delicias de los amantes de los sonidos más calientes. Del POSTRE ni falta decir que suele ser algo delicioso como lo son las sesiones de uno de los excelentes colaboradores de la radio anterior, el dj Makala que en su programa de radio podcast nos deleita con la mejor BLACKTRONICA con mayúsculas. Broken beat,breaks y groove de altísima calidad. Si apetece un CAFECITO o INFUSIÓN por supuesto que va incluido en el menú, de la mano de Rodolfo Poveda y su programa Trópico Utópico en Rne3, dedicado a músicas del mundo y que con su “Sonideros”nos descubre la mejor fusión musical en colaboración con algunos de los Djs y selectores con mejor gusto de la península, como son el elegante dj Floro responsable de recopilaciones como la ya conocida República Afrobeat.
The STARTER has to be fulsome, it must satisfy, it must have content and that’s how it is with Siglo 21 on Rne3, a programme presented by Tomas Fernando Flores and dedicated to contemporary music – with a high electronic content of course. I’ve been listening to it for maybe 12 years, I don’t remember; what I do remember is that when I did start to enjoy it, around 1996, it was almost unbelievable how mediocre the radio offerings were at that time. To be able to listen every day from 10am, so that breakfast was 2 hours of electronic music – poppy, experimental or underground – was a luxury. Plus the Internet was in full adaptive swing. At the moment, and after all this time, I’m still into it and continue to enjoy, now at a more appetising hour (1pm), the music selection offered by this great programme. It says something about the music of the future, or the present I should say. ‘The future begins every morning when you wake up,’ preached one Jeff Mills in his first compilation, which was set to be released in the form of a double CD; a neat resume of what we might find on Siglo 21, which doesn’t mean just music but also mini-sections dedicated to art, information technology, social conflict and the curious voice-mail box where, every day, the listeners become the protagonists, saying whatever comes into their head without prejudice. Of course the programme has a corresponding Internet version where you can download the podcast and listen to it any time you want. The SECOND course will simply be different from the starter and an experience for the senses, qualities found in abundance in ‘Sabrosura’, a programme aired on Radio Gladis Palmera in which we can enjoy the best mixed of world music; the mix is infinite; electronic, salsa, mpb, cumbia, Latin jazz, hip hop, Brazilian funky and much more... combined and stirred together in a programme that warms the insides of music lovers everywhere. For DESSERT obviously something delicious, like the sessions served up by one of the most excellent radio collaborators, DJ Makala, who in his radio podcast programme delights us all with the best BLACKTRONIC (with capitals) music. Broken beat, breaks and groove of the highest quality. If you feel like a COFFEE or INFUSION it is, of course, included in the menu, at the hands of Rodolfo Poveda and his programme Tropico Utopico on Rne3, dedicated to world music. With ‘Sonideros’we discover the best fusions, collaborations with some of the best DJs and selectors of the peninsula, such as the elegant DJ Floro, who was responsible for compilations such as the well-known Republica Afrobeat. Con el mes de junio la ciudad entera ya susurra por lo bajo... ¡falta poco para el Sónar! Durante tres días y dos noches (sin contar el recién estrenado Sónar Kids y todos los “anti-Sónars” habidos y por haber) Barcelona es y ha sido un año más, la gran anfitriona del primer gran evento de la temporada. 74.500 personas (algo menos que en la pasada edición) con mucho look y de gustos musicales muy diversos, latiendo y saboreando las tendencias electrónicas, internacionales y nacionales, más novedosas. El Jueves día, en la carpa de Red Bull Academy, el Live fresco de Cécile (Italia) entró bien, seguido de la formación Mulatu Astatke & The Heliocentrics (Etiopía/GB), con influencias Afro-Jazz. Pero el plato fuerte lo sirvió Filastine (US/BCN), acompañado de una cantante/bailarina muy especial y una violonchelista francesa, además de los tan esperados Institut Fatima (Alemania/BCN) (**Ver entrevista), que a su vez ofrecieron su singular show the retrovisión musical en Sonarmatic. Viernes día, The Young Fathers nos hicieron bailar como niños con su nu-funk estiloso. Omar Souleyman agregó el toque étnico a la tarde y la frescura de Goldielocks trajo dosis de color. Por la Noche la reina indiscutible fue sin duda la mítica y provocativa Grace Jones (que apareció en escena con orejas de gatita y un Hula Hop). Aunque no menos digna fue la sesión de Mary Anne Hobbs (** Video en nuestra Web) , representando lo mejor de su programa en Radio1 (UK) y, como no, el poderío de Joker (UK), que dejó huella profunda en todo amante ferviente del Dubstep… Baraka Sound Sistema (Portugal) calentaron el Club con su potente mezcla de Hip Hop/Ragga/ Afro y Dub. Sábado, durante el día, tuvimos más Dubstep de calidad con Cardopusher (Venezuela/BCN) a los platos, además de la actuación muy personal del artista local Guillamino. Por la Noche, Animal Collective (US) consiguieron crear una atmósfera casi onírica y espiritual…Beardyman (UK) estuvo absolutamente magistral…¡y con sólo su voz como instrumento! Y Orbital, los grandes de hoy y siempre, no decepcionaron en absoluto a un público fan y entregado. Además, conocimos a mucha gente nueva desde nuestro stand RELEVANTbcn, tuvimos la ocasión de pasar nuestro CD a vinilo en el stand de los alemanes Vinyl Recorder (** video en nuestra web) y charlamos de prevención con Energy Control (información y análisis gratis de drogas) y con EarProof (protección auditiva). Then there was Joker (UK), who left a deep impression on all those fervent lovers of Dubstep... Baraka Sound Sistema (Portugal) heated up the Club with a powerful mix of Hip Hop/Ragga/Afro and Dub. Saturday, during the day, we had more quality Dubstep with Cardopusher (Venezuela/BCN) on the decks, as well as a very personal performance by local artist Guillamino. At night, Animal Collective (US) managed to create a dreamy, spiritual atmosphere. Beardyman (UK) was absolutely magisterial, and with only his voice as an instrument! And orbital, the greats of today and always, didn’t let the public down at all. As well as all that, we met a lot of new people at the Relevantbcn stand. We had the chance to convert our CD into vinyl at the German Vinyl Recorder stand (check out the video on our Web) and chatted about prevention with Energy Control (free information and analysis about drugs) and with EarProof (auditory protection).

Las calles se tornan ríos de jugo de tomate; las razas se olvidan porque el único color que se aprecia es el rojo. Si te maravillan las delicias de la carne expuesta, espera a verla goteando líquido carmesí... y es que no hay nada más romántico que lamer a tu pareja hasta dejarla limpia. In the Sauce // Ah yes, you know the feeling... the end of August is coming up; you’ve had a great summer, lying on the beach, slowly exchanging your blood for sangria and marvelling at the wonders of exposed flesh... once again, you’ve proven your devotion to sun, sea and sand. But, you wonder, what about the tomatoes? How to praise Nature’s sweet prize? Well, if you’re serious about paying homage to Spain’s major ingredient, there’s only one option; head down to Bunol, Valencia, during the last week in August for the Tomatina, the massive tomato-chucking festival where over one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are lobbed by thousands of people in the biggest, messiest, most brutal food-fight EVER! The streets become rivers of tomato juice; race is forgotten as the only skin colour you see is red – and if you marvelled at the wonders of exposed flesh, wait until you see it dripping with crimson pulp... and there’s nothing quite so romantic as licking your lover clean at the end of the night. I guarantee you’ll never look at tomatoes in the same way ever again. Sacred Holy Tomato, splatter me with Thy munificence! All hail the Great Tomato! Oh, you’d better take some goggles too.

En su segunda edición, el Barcelona Extreme Festival se ha convertido en uno de los grandes eventos de Europa. Este año, 35.000 personas bajaron al Forum para ver cómo los mejores hacían auténticas locuras. El festival urbano de deporte contó con la participación de 200 profesionales y 500 amateurs que compitieron en una amplia variedad de deportes extremos: skateboarding, BMX, patinaje en línea, FMX, tablas de esquí acuático, esquí, snowboard y longboard. Entre los 14 ganadores del Extreme Festival había tres españoles: Edgar Torronteras se hizo con la victoria en FMX; Daniel Peñafiel tocó la gloria en la competición BMX y Juan Rubio hizo un ejercicio impecable y se llevó el trofeo de Longboard a casa. El evento ha consolidado fuertemente su popularidad entre los competidores y los barceloneses. La combinación de sol, mar, buen rollo y una gran dosis de locura componen una receta fantástica para salir el fin de semana. Hasta
el alcalde de Barcelona, Jordi Hereu, estaba flipando. “Este evento confirma la capacidad de Barcelona para ser la capital del deporte y para resaltar la dimensión urbana del deporte. (He aquí otra contradicción más. No entiendo cómo se atreve a decir eso tras prohibir el patinaje, aumentar las multas a los practicantes y obligar a la gente a rebelarse para mantener su derecho a divertirse ante la falta de respeto absoluta por las nuevas generaciones. Quizás deberíamos tomarnos las declaraciones del alcalde al pie de la letra e intentar reformar algunas de las leyes más escandalosas). Al margen de eso, ha sido un paso de gigante para el deporte urbano y extremo, y el apoyo recibido denota que este acontecimiento no es flor de un día. Felicidades a todos los ganadores y a todos los que han participado; esperamos con impaciencia piruetas más grandes y espectaculares en el festival del año que viene.
Now in its second year, the Barcelona Extreme Festival has become one of the great events in Europe. 35,000 people decended onto the Forum this year to see some top extreme action. The urban sports festival featured 200 pros and 500 amateurs taking part in competitions in a range of extreme sports; skateboarding, BMX, inline skating, FMX, wakeboarding, skiing, snowboarding and longboarding. Among the 14 Extremists who were proclaimed victors at the Extreme Festival, there were three Spaniards; Edgar Torronteras snatched first place in the FMX, Daniel Peñafiel rode his way to the top of the leader board in the BMX comp and and Juan Rubio boarded right to become champion in the Longbard contest. This event has defenitly secured its popularity with the riders and the Barcelonians. Combine, sun, sea, wake and a large dose of craziness and you have a recipe for a great weekend out. Even the Mayor of Barcelona, Jordi Hereu, was bigging it up “this is an event that confirms the power of Barcelona as the capital of sport and enhancing the urban dimension of sports.” (Yet another contradiction. I don’t understand how that can be said after all that has happened in Barcelona, banning of skating, increased fines to riders, rioting for our equal rights to have fun and a complete lack of respect for the younger generation. Su recaudación se destinará a la reforma y mejora de infraestructuras en cocina y comedores de de 4 entidades de Barcelona que atienden personas en situación o riesgo de indigencia y con problemas de drogodependencia y SIDA (ABD, ACASC, ÀMBIT PREVENCIÒ, SAPS) Este año se apuntaron artistas de la talla de The Pinker Tones, Vicknoise, Filastine Dj set, Monoculture, Goldfinger Crew, Institut Fatima, MCMX…entre muchos otros. Sin olvidar, el Showcase PACAS, SuperNanas (con su Concierto Silencioso), el Chill Out del colectivo ecológico Hamaka y la intervención live painting de los artistas urbanos de Vaqueros de Barcelona. mantes de lo gastronómicamente extraño, aquí tenéis un local. Bueno, por lo que parece los que no sois tan aventureros también. De hecho, si os gusta la comida en general, y la cocina mejicana tradicional en especial, ¡ahí va una joya! El domingo pasado (12.07.2009), Relevant salió en una búsqueda poco habitual de los mejores insectos de la ciudad – un plato que nos recomendaron evitar si no estábamos acostumbrados a la textura y el sabor. De todas formas, seguimos adelante y preparamos mente y estómago para atacar a criaturas viscosas, serpenteantes y espeluznantes. Ante nuestra sorpresa (y pavor), encontramos un restaurante que prometía un suculento abanico de insectos frescos, pero al final resulta que estábamos yendo a uno de los mejores restaurantes mejicanos tradicionales de Barcelona. Llegamos a un local refinado escondido por las callejuelas de Gracia, lejos del fervor del día a día. El restaurante es tradicional en todos los aspectos: decoración colorida, mesas de madera curada, personal simpático y una selección muy amplia de platos deliciosos. Tras unas cuantas cervezas frescas y unos entrantes para ir abriendo boca, llegó el turno de las criaturas espeluznantes. Tres platos sencillos, ¡con ingrediente extra de bichos! Ya sé lo que estáis pensando, pero de hecho os equivocáis de pleno. El primer plato se componía de tostadas de pan integral con una rodaja de tomate y cubierto de grillos fritos. ¡Sí, grillos (o saltamontes)! De hecho estaba bastante bueno, tenía un regusto a atún y, acompañado de la cerveza, entraba bastante bien. El segundo plato eran escarabajos fritos sobre un panecillo con guacamole. De nuevo, nos llevamos una agradable sorpresa, ya que sabía a chicharrones. Y el último plato (esta vez dulce) era un bollo que tenía algún tipo de huevos de insecto mezclados con salsa de toffee. En general, nos fuimos de la Cantina Machito muy llenos, muy satisfecho y con muchas ganas de bichos. Recomendamos encarecidamente el restaurante a todos - incluso a los que si no les gustan los insectos - pero aseguraos de llegar pronto porque no reservan mesa y se llena rapidísimamente después de las 21:00. Muchas gracias al personal de la Cantina Machito por hacerlo una experiencia tan agradable.

ow here’s one for you adventurous food lovers, and as it turns out for those not so adventurous as well. In fact, if you enjoy food at all, and especially traditional Mexican cuisine, do we have a treat for you! Last Sunday (12/07/09) Relevant went off on a rather unusual quest to track down the finest bugs in town, a dish we were warned to avoid, for those less unaccustomed to the texture and taste. However we plodded on and prepared our minds and stomachs for the onslaught of slimy, wriggly, creepy crawlies. To our surprise (and dread) we came across a restaurant that promised to supply us with an array of fresh insects. As it turns out, we headed to one of the best traditional Mexican restaurants in Barcelona. We arrived at a dainty little restaurant tucked away in the back streets of Gracia far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The restaurant was authentic in everyway, colourful décor, weathered wooden tables, friendly staff and an incredible array of mouth-watering dishes. After a few cold beers and some starters to line our stomachs, the creepy crawlies came out to play. Three simple dishes with a topping of bugs! I know what you’re thinking, but in fact you’d be wrong. The first dish was brown toast, with a slice of tomato and topped with fried crickets, yes crickets (or grasshoppers)! It was actually pretty tasty, rather like Tuna, and accompanied by the beers, slipped down easily. The second dish was fried beetles on a panini bread and guacamole. Again this dish was a pleasant surprise and tasted a bit like pork crackling. And the last dish, a sweet one this time, had some sort of insect eggs in a toffee sauce on a scone. All in all, we left Cantina Machito, very full, very satisfied, and with a lust for bugs! We highly recommend this restaurant to all, even if you don’t fancy some insects, but make sure you get there early as there are no reservations and the tables fill up very quickly after 21:00. Thanks very much for the staff at Cantina Machito for making it such a pleasant experience.

CHILDREN pick up a lot of stuff from their parents; they are, after all, our primary source of behavioural knowledge during the formative years. Sometimes we copy our parents consciously but more often than not the characteristics we inherit are learned unconsciously; they become part of our psyche, without asking why or indeed if those traits are appropriate to us. So we pick stuff up, good stuff and bad stuff, nice habits and nasty habits, whether we want to or not. Of course, we do grow up, we develop and we can, if so inclined, take a critical look at ourselves and decide whether the modes of behaviour we employ are ones we should keep or discard in favour of new ones. However, the strength of our conditioning can also make us blind. Take the state of Israel at the beginning of the twenty-first century; currently in the throes of expansionist bully-boy zeal, dishing out the kind of xenophobic violence its own people were themselves subject to not so long ago, Israel is mostly unwilling to answer to any sort of criticism except to claim that such criticism is a blatant attack on it and further evidence of history’s antipathy and prejudice towards Judaism.

Como es el más fuerte de los dos, Israel tiene la sartén por el mango – y por tanto, la responsabilidad moral – de detener las hostilidades. Sin embargo, en vez de atenerse a esa responsabilidad, Israel mira a Palestina – pequeña, débil y pobre – y descarga el viejo rencor histórico de su pueblo sobre ellos. En otras palabras, Israel está emulando a su padre; la Alemania de Hitler, poderosa como pocas, quería vengarse del tratamiento recibido tras la Primera Guerra Mundial con un objetivo fácil (la población judía, por ejemplo) para culparle y descargar su ira sobre ellos. En una demostración de frialdad, bajo el perturbador sello de la lógica “razonable”, Israel intenta aniquilar a los palestinos con violencia, depravación y – al igual que su padre – lo hace a través de la anexión, la humillación y la deshumanización. While it is indeed difficult to deny that Jewish culture has long suffered at the hand of paranoid, racist belligerence, modern-day Israel’s refusal to observe its own actions objectively in a wider cultural context, in favour of what is - considering both its financial and military power and its quite disturbing treatment of the Palestinian people - a rather spurious argument about continual persecution, smacks of little more than the classic victim psychology of someone who was abused as a child. Israel, to put it bluntly, is one fucked-up kid and, at the risk of sounding like someone who writes letters to tabloid newspapers, I blame the parents. Yes, just like everyone else, Israel – as confused and painfully selfconscious as any adolescent; for surely, in the grand old scheme of nations, that is what it is – has picked up its habits from mommy and daddy; mommy being the molly-coddling, over-protective, my-babycan-do-no-wrong United States of America; daddy being cruel, abusive wartime Nazi Germany. Talk about conflicting ideologies. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Israel’s attitude towards Palestine.
Being the stronger of the two sides, Israel, if it so chooses, has the power and therefore the onus of moral responsibility to put a halt to the hostilities. Yet, rather than take that moral high ground, Israel looks at Palestine, small and weak and miserable, and instead vents the age-old anger of its people’s historical frustration at it. In other words, Israel is emulating its father; Hitler’s Germany, flexing the muscle of revenge for its treatment following World War I, was also looking for an easy target (the Jewish population, amongst others) to blame and spit at. Coldly, with its own disturbing brand of ‘reasonable’ logic, Israel attempts to annihilate the Palestinians with violence, deprivation and, like its father, through annexation, humiliation and dehumanisation. And all this time, Israel has been peeking over its shoulder to see what mommy – the USA – has had to say about it poking the little kid next door with a sharp stick. Until now at least, mommy has said very little – or, when she has said something, she hasn’t really meant it. Concealed beneath the protective flabby underarm of Mama America, Israel has safely deflected the disapproval of all its other global neighbours and,

Según mis contactos del palacio, Jong-il demostró una furia especial al ver que su colección de Hannah Montana no se había librado de la eliminación masiva. Hace poco, hice un viaje a esa región extraña y misteriosa llamada Escocia.
