What’s

24-26 QLD Quarterly Meeting Weekend

National President’s Message As we find ourselves on the cusp of the Christmas season, it's that time of year when we pause and ponder the relentless passage of time.

M

ichael Altshuler once wisely noted, "The bad news is time flies. The good news is you're the pilot." It seems like only yesterday that we ushered in 2023, and yet here we are, nearing its end. But before we lament the fleeting nature of time, let's take a moment to appreciate the fact that we are indeed the pilots of our own journey and upon reflection, we can proudly acknowledge that we’ve accomplished a great deal in 2023, steering our course with determination and purpose. One shining example of our collective dedication is the resounding success of our Divisional Annual General Meetings (AGMs) held across the country. Despite the relentless business pressures and daily challenges we all face, our members prioritised these essential events. We gathered to learn, support one another, share experiences, and enjoy the invaluable opportunity to socialise. I can honestly say that attending all six of these AGMs left me with a heart brimming with gratitude. Being in the company of funeral care leaders in Australia, witnessing your

passion, your commitment, and hearing your touching stories of the families and funerals close to your hearts, only reaffirmed my unwavering belief in our shared profession. My travels also took me to Las Vegas for the NFDA Conference on behalf of AFDA, which presented a remarkable opportunity to connect with peers from around the world. At the AFDA stand we showcased the exceptional expertise that AFDA Members offer to our communities. I extend a huge thank you to our 2023 AFDA Scholarship winner, Taryn Hunt, as well as Past National Presidents Wes Heritage and John Scott, who joined CEO Dale Gilson and myself in engaging with funeral professionals, suppliers, and international association representatives. These connections are of utmost importance, facilitating collaboration in areas like repatriation, professional development, cultural understanding, and product and service insights on a global scale. As we serve diverse communities in Australia, we must stay ahead of the curve and remain aware of new offerings from around the world. In our quest to lead the way and navigate our own time and possibilities, AFDA has taken a pioneering step by launching the online Funeral Learning Hub (FLH). Exclusive to AFDA Members, the FLH offers a worldclass education program covering a broad spectrum of topics and courses, from onboarding new staff to the importance of mortuary care, human resources, and organisational excellence. The FLH is now up and running, and if you haven't explored it yet, I urge you to do so without delay. Offering high-quality education and training is key to attracting and retaining the finest talent in funeral service. And, rest assured, there are more exciting developments to come with the FLH in 2024. To discover these, I invite you to join us at the 2024 AFDA National Convention on 22-24 March at the Hilton Hotel in Adelaide.

Furthermore, in a remarkable first for Australia, AFDA and the Australian Institute of Embalming (AIE) are aligning their conferences at the same time. This collaboration allows us to share education and keynote sessions, as we work closely together for the benefit of our families. It's a unique opportunity to learn from each other and tap into the expertise of Australia's leading funeral professionals and embalmers. As the year gracefully winds down, I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to each one of you who will continue to serve your communities over the Christmas period. Many of you will make personal sacrifices, missing out on your own family gatherings and celebrations to support those who have lost loved ones during this special time of the year. Unlike many other industries, the work of our profession does not pause for the holidays. Our offices remain open, and our dedication unwavering. In the midst of your dedication to others, I implore you to also take care of yourselves and each other. If it is at all possible, seize a moment to appreciate the remarkable individuals that you are, spend time with your loved ones, and celebrate the unique significance of this season in your own way. In closing, I extend my warmest wishes to you and your families during this holiday season. May it be a time of reflection, gratitude, and the renewal of your spirits. Warm regards

Kelly Scott

MFE prides itself on being specialists for the SIF40213 Certificate IV in Embalming, as well as expert trainers in all other aspects of funeral education. Welcome to New Affiliate Member EUULO

E

uulo is a bespoke software and app designed to streamline the photo tribute process for the funeral industry. Founders Renaya, Sheree and Kerriden saw a problem they could solve with custom built technology. Formerly a graphic designer in the funeral industry, Sheree would drive across town to collect treasured albums and old photo frames to laboriously scan, which was both time consuming and expensive. Renaya and Kerriden came from the family side of the equation having experienced the death of their father at a young age. Back then, photo tributes were boards of pinned up photos. Things have

changed a lot in 25 years, but the process of gathering a lifetime of memories remains stressful, time consuming and laboursome – not to mention inefficient. Euulo has been thoughtfully built to be either completely managed in-house by a funeral director, or if they choose to invite families, there are levels of access designed for them to contribute. Using euulo can significantly reduce costs, save time and ease stress through: • Affordable and confidential industry pricing;

Photo editing and sequencing;

Cover templates;

Auto-timing photos to music;

Professional MP4 outputs; and

• A custom app for gathering photos complete with inbuilt scanning, phone gallery access and social media integration. With euulo, funeral directors have full visibility and control over the photo tribute process with the flexibility to best suit each family they serve. Euulo is offering AFDA Members a no obligation 30 day free trial. Visit www.euulo.com to register.

From the The final month of 2023 is upon us in what has been an incredibly busy year with travel well and truly back on the agenda.

A

long with travelling to every State at least once, events also took National President Kelly Scott and I to New Zealand and the USA to work with and learn from our fellow funeral association colleagues overseas. It has been an exciting year where AFDA welcomed five new Full Members, 10 Affiliate Members, 10 new Divisional Councillors, a new National Corporate Partner in Key Business Advisors, partnerships with GriefLink SA, Palliative Care Australia and News Corp / My Tributes, as well as two new staff members in Edwina Ellicott (full time) and Coralie Higgins (part time). The year rounded out with a constitution review well under way. The most significant change for the year is the introduction of the online Funeral Learning Hub. Thank you to Greg Shorland and Roddy McKinnon from T H Online for their support and willingness to adapt to Australian requirements. After 18 months of negotiations, planning and reviewing of course material by the working party, we launched. Thank you to the working party of Don Burstow, Sharyn Moll,

CEO Bernardine Brierty, Luke Gregson, Deanne McLeod, Asha Dooley and Edwina Ellicott for all your hard work. Many of our members also provided content and imagery. We are incredibly grateful for your support. It is now over to you, our members and your staff to make the most of this incredible education tool, which other than the learning benefit, you will receive certificates and digital badges in recognition of the courses and bundles completed. In September National President Kelly Scott and I attended the NFDA Convention in Las Vegas, USA where AFDA was provided with a complimentary exhibitors stand. There were many great learnings around what AI has to offer and what the impact will be. This is very likely to be a topic for our own AFDA Convention in March 2024. Along with attending some excellent education sessions, making connections with funeral directors and other funeral associations from around the world was of great value. The timing of this year’s NFDA Convention fell on 11 September, and it was incredibly moving to be at the convention to see images and hear firsthand recollections from those who were there that day and the impact it has had on them and all Americans. AFDA Scholarship winner Taryn Hunt from McGlynn Hunt Funerals in Mildura also joined the Aussie contingent. Taryn attended numerous education sessions and assisted with the AFDA stand as the winner of the 2023 Scholarship of which we received a record 18 entries. You can read all about Taryn’s experience of attending the convention on page 16 of the Journal. Thank you to Foresters Financial for once again sponsoring this amazing scholarship prize.

it was terrific to see members across all of Australia, hear what challenges they face, and to present the year AFDA has had, and in particular, talk about our newest initiative, the online Funeral Learning Hub. One of the things that has become noticeable as we travelled the AGM circuit this year is how many more Councillors have joined Councils in 2023. Seeing such engagement and willingness to contribute is really pleasing and I thank you for putting up your hand when I know how busy everyone is. Thank you to our National Corporate Partners and Divisional Sponsors for your support once again this year. It has been wonderful to see everyone as we travelled Australia for the many events. Thank you also to our National and Divisional Councillors who have once again worked so hard to represent our members and the funeral industry when it mattered most across the year. I hope to see all our members and corporate partners at the AFDA Convention in Adelaide on March 22-24 in the coming year. This is an aligned event with the AIE Conference on March 21-23, and we look forward to joining AIE members for some mutually beneficial social and educational sessions. On behalf of the AFDA staff, Deanne, Lucinda, Theresa, Sherida, Kate, Edwina, and Coralie, I would like to take the opportunity to wish you and your family a safe and prosperous holiday period and Happy New Year. I look forward to seeing you all again in 2024.

Dale Gilson

Kelly Scott and I also attended the WA Divisional AGM in Mandurah, NSW/ACT AGM in Wollongong, and ACCA Conference in Melbourne all within weeks, making it a very busy end to the year of travel! As always, 09

AFDA Funeral Learning Hub Now Live!

The AFDA Funeral Learning Hub (FLH) is now live and available exclusively for AFDA Members to access at their convenience.

T

he level of activity on the Funeral Learning Hub is encouraging, with now over 200 active users, and this number continues to grow daily. We appreciate the positive feedback received from members, along with the valuable ideas submitted. Please keep sharing your insights as we plan the next stages of the Funeral Learning Hub. With so many courses and options to choose from, it can be a bit overwhelming to start with. Below are some tips on how to get the most out of the Funeral Learning Hub. Getting started When you first sign in, you’ll notice the Getting Started Video – this 2-minute video will give you a quick tour of the site and show you how to navigate the site efficiently. Then, take the time to explore the platform and familiarise yourself with the courses available. Think about the types of skills and knowledge that you need for your role. If you are new to the funeral industry then any of the courses in the ‘Induction to the Funeral Industry Bundle’ are a great place to start. These courses reinforce the significance of being an AFDA Member and what your requirements and responsibilities are as an AFDA professional. A broad range

of topics are covered that are specific to the funeral industry and feature interviews with AFDA Members who have a wealth of experience to share. This bundle is also excellent for staff wanting an industry refresher. It’s a good idea for staff to discuss their training plan with their supervisor to ensure it’s aligned with their organisation's strategic goals. The Funeral Learning Hub can form part of a staff member’s professional development plan and serve as a useful tool to help plan future training for all staff. If time is a constraint, you can start a course and then return to it later. The Funeral Learning Hub tracks your progress, and the Dashboard displays all courses ‘Not Started’, ‘In Progress’ and 'Completed', so it's easy to keep track of where you are up to. Learning levels You’ll notice that the courses are grouped into the learning levels: Foundational, Intermediate and Advanced. These are intended as a guide, especially to start with. A new to industry staff member may start on the Foundational courses and then move to an Intermediate course, however a very experienced staff member may also choose to take a Foundational course, such as Chinese Funeral Traditions because they have limited knowledge in this area. A summary of the learning levels is below. Foundational – Suitable for new to industry,

professionals or those seeking to pivot their career into new areas of the funeral industry. These courses provide an introduction to the topic, giving users a broad understanding of the subject and an appetite to learn more. Intermediate – Ideal for professionals who may have worked in the funeral industry for a few years and are looking to build on their existing knowledge in order to apply this in their own workplace. These courses can help learners build their confidence to take their new skills and knowledge further. Advanced – Suitable for leaders and Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) in the funeral industry or senior professionals who are pivoting to the funeral industry. Professionals undertaking these courses are leaders in their field and are seeking to stretch their knowledge to coach staff and/or innovate within their business. It’s an exciting time for the future of professional development at AFDA. The Funeral Learning Hub is highly scalable, with the capacity to offer a breadth of courses delivered in a range of formats. AFDA and the Funeral Learning Hub Working Group will continue to monitor the Funeral Learning Hub ensuring it delivers industry best practice in professional development and positions AFDA as the funeral industry leader. If you have any questions or even a suggestion for course content please contact Edwina Ellicott, National Education, edwina.ellicott@afda.org.au. 11

Grieving Together – Part 3: Acknowledging the Illusion of Control By Alan D Wolfelt Ph.D Early grief is a naturally out-of-control time, and it is this loss of control that often makes people feel like they’re going crazy. It doesn’t feel good to be out of control, though.

T

his is the third article in a six-part article series by Alan D Wolfelt, author, educator and consultant to the funeral industry adapted from his new book You’re Not Crazy — You’re Grieving as a reminder that crazy is normal in new grief and to help funeral staff support families through their intense grief during the early hours, days and weeks following the death of a loved one.

Death naturally throws a person’s thoughts, feelings and behaviours into disarray. To the 12

families you serve, nothing may feel ‘normal’ right now. They might find themselves surprised at things they think, say or do. Small things they used to take in their stride might now throw them off track. Everything may feel strange and off-kilter.

themselves,” they’re doing what they need to be doing. “This is crazy,” they might think on any given day or, “I feel like I’m going crazy.” But you can help them understand that the crazy is normal in grief and that they’re in the process of getting acquainted with it.

Acknowledging helplessness Any time we encounter something Individual human beings are largely helpless substantially different, we have to assess when it comes to matters of life and death. potential new dangers and figure out This is perhaps the most devastating reality new responses. It is difficult, being in new of being human. For the most part, we situations, especially those we don’t can’t control who gets sick. We want to be in. But the more we can’t control accidents. We can’t acknowledge that control is an control natural disasters. We illusion, the more comfortable in early grief, can’t control many financial we can become with the being out of upheavals. And we can’t constant change and control is normal control what other people do. unpredictability of life.

and necessary

This article is about helping those grieving be compassionate with themselves as they go through this naturally out-ofcontrol time. It's also about beginning to acknowledge that we as humans are not really in control of many essential aspects of our lives. If over time those grieving work to cultivate more awareness that control is an illusion, they will start living with more ease and joy.

Often those grieving are powerless to prevent the death of the person they love and now they are helpless in the midst of their early grief. Their thoughts, feelings and behaviours may seem wildly different from what they normally are, and they feel helpless to control them. That’s okay. Again, you can help them understand that their grief is doing what it needs to do.

Saying hello to the crazy People typically wish they could take shortcuts around grief. Almost immediately after a death, there’s talk of “saying goodbye,” “closure,” and “moving on.” The trouble is that’s not at all how it works. We actually have to say hello to all the new experiences of grief before we can even begin to think about “saying goodbye.” People in early grief are still in this hello phase.

The experience of denial In early grief, denial can follow shock and numbness. It takes a while for the mind to understand and process the reality of what has happened. In the meantime, those grieving are living in that bubble of shock and numbness. This is normal. As the weeks pass, though, they might find themselves moving out of shock and into denial. Denial is a more conscious, active blocking of reality than shock and numbness are.

One big thing they have to say hello to is feeling out of control. Because in early grief, being out of control is normal and necessary, and recognising and acknowledging this is key. When those grieving are feeling the craziness of being out of control or “not

Denial is a form of attempted control. If you can deny that something has happened, you’re controlling your perceived reality. You’re not actually changing the reality, however. So, while intermittent denial in the first weeks and months can be normal,

remaining in denial over the long term will inhibit healing and ongoing living. As those grieving move through early grief, you can help them take baby steps one day at a time out of any denial they may be experiencing and into reality. When you talk openly about the death, inviting them to share stories of their loss and relationship with the person who died and participate in a meaningful ceremony, you are helping them soften their denial. Out-of-control experiences of early grief People in early grief often feel themselves behaving in what can feel like out-of-control ways. Here are some of the most common.

Crying/Sobbing/Screaming Tears in grief are normal, of course, and gentle tears are considered socially acceptable. We expect grieving people to cry, and in return we offer condolences and comfort – up to a point. But when crying seems ‘out of control’, we frequently don’t know what to do. We often judge loud, messy crying as ‘hysterical’ behavior. In Eastern cultures, sobbing and wailing (sometimes called ‘keening’) are encouraged and understood as a normal part of grief and mourning. In our culture more broadly, however, sobbing and wailing are often seen as evidence of mental instability i.e., craziness. But when people are in early grief they are naturally shattered and thus out of control. It is this very loss of control that allows them to authentically express their strong, primal feelings. And what about those not crying? This is also common. Sometimes people ask, “Why am I not crying? What is wrong with me?” The lack of tears often makes these people think they’re crazy, but of course, they are not. If those grieving are not crying,

they might still be experiencing shock and numbness. Or they might not be crying because they are avoiding things that remind them of the significance of their loss. Some people also fear that if they start crying, they may never stop. All these responses are normal in early grief.

Moodiness When a loved one dies, those grieving may feel like they’re surviving fairly well one minute and are crazy with emotion the next. Sudden mood changes can be a difficult yet normal part of their grief journey. These shifts might be small or dramatic. They can be caused by anything – a familiar place, a song, an insensitive comment, a change in the weather, or nothing at all. Mood changes can make those grieving feel like they’re going crazy because their inappropriate self-expectation may be that they should be constantly progressing from chaos to stability. They might think they should follow a pattern of continuous ‘improvement’ in grief. In other words, they expect themselves to keep feeling better and better as time passes. The reality is, though, that grief twists and turns like a mountainous trail with a million loops and switchbacks. One day they might be feeling sad and the next wildly angry only to feel deeply sad again the next day. And in general, grief usually gets worse before it gets better. As the novocain of shock and numbness wears off and deeper understanding grows, the pain often intensifies for a time. You can encourage those grieving not to be too hard on themselves if they are experiencing the normal ups and downs and

wild swings of mood and instead invite them to practice patience and self-compassion. They should allow their moods to come and go without self-judgement.

Pain Early grief hurts so much, especially when the shock and numbness start to wear off. The hurt is usually in proportion to the level of attachment the person grieving had to the person who died. Though many other factors also come into play, in general the stronger the love and the closer the day-to-day relationship, the more painful the grief. For many people in early grief, the pain feels out of control. It is more powerful than they are. When appropriate you can help those grieving understand that in grief, pain has a purpose, just like bodily pain. Grief pain is an alarm bell signalling that there is work to be done. It's grief work. It's mourning. The adjusting and healing in the after don't just happen. They take attention, time, effort and devotion. Just like the love did. The pain of early grief may feel crazy, but actually, it is good and true. The more those grieving learn to befriend it, the more they will see that it is there to help them adapt to the new reality and find ways to continue to live and love well in the future. Distinguished Service Award Errol Barrett The WA Division was thrilled to present the AFDA Distinguished Service Award to industry great Errol Barrett, from William Barrett & Sons, at the WA AGM weekend in October.

T

he AFDA Distinguished Service Award recognises individuals who make an exceptional contribution to the work of the AFDA at a Divisional level and to the common good of the profession. In the AFDA honour roll Errol Barrett has chalked up some remarkable achievements, including undertaking Divisional (1991-1993) and National (1997-1999) Presidencies, serving on the National Executive and National Council and WA Divisional Council, being awarded the AFDA Master Funeral Director Award in 2003 in recognition of his qualifications and service to the industry for more than 20 years, and Life Membership of AFDA in 2012. Errol is the third generation of his family to practice in the funeral industry. When he left school his father Tom convinced him to try out the family trade, and in 1965 he commenced in the business, thinking “Yeah, this will do me, for as long as I can make it”. Errol developed the full range of skills needed to work in a funeral business, from

coffin making, to embalming, to arranging and conducting funerals, as well as building and developing a strong and successful business operation after taking over the reins of William Barrett & Sons in 1990. Errol was the first qualified Embalmer in Western Australia, and the only one for approximately 20 years. After attending a seminar on grief and bereavement in South Australia Errol realised that there was a need in the community to access information and education about death, dying and bereavement. Through William Barrett & Sons Errol provided the community with education from 1980. Further down the track, with 25 years of funeral experience, a new Funeral Centre was designed to assist families in their time of bereavement. The Funeral Centre in Bunbury was opened in October 1990. Errol sponsored aged seminars, ecumenical services, education seminars and many other community activities to promote education in death, dying and bereavement and continues to host sessions on death, dying and bereavement with TAFE

students, nurses and school groups. Errol has been a board member of Bunbury Cemetery since its inception in 1992 and was a valuable contributor to the inaugural steering committee to set up an independent Cemetery Board. In 1994 Errol chaired a National Committee investigating guidelines for interstate transfer of human remains. Errol was recognised by Rotary in 1995 with the Governor’s Award for Regional Development for his contribution to the funeral industry and community and in 2006 was nominated by the Bunbury Catholic Women’s Association for Australia Day Citizen of the Year. Despite being caught by complete surprise Errol gave an inspirational acceptance speech, in which he emphasised that although much has changed in his time as a funeral director, the simplest philosophy is the most important – “just look after the person who has died”. Errol’s acceptance speech was followed by a standing ovation, a fitting response to a stellar career. 15

Las Vegas NFDA International Convention & Expo The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) International Convention and Expo 2023 delivered everything the preceding hype promised and more.

T

he lights of Las Vegas not only dazzled all in attendance at night but also provided an electrifying backdrop for the workshops, sessions, and the expo. With over 300 exhibitors and over 30 educational sessions the Convention Centre became our ‘office’ for the convention. Unable to be in more than one place at a time I made the most of every valuable minute. Education sessions In powerful American grandeur the National Anthem was sung with great pride as we were officially welcomed to the NFDA Convention and Expo. Formalities included acknowledgement of past and present board members and paying tribute to the ‘Funeral Service Foundation’ which is the charitable arm of the NFDA supporting grieving communities by investing in people and programs that strengthen funeral service throughout the United States and the world. The opening keynote speaker Suneel Gupta, author and entrepreneur, spoke about his own personal journey in his discovery to both failure and success. Building ‘better habits’ for both life and work, managing stress, and moving in the ever16

changing world of work, were among his discussion points, but the biggest takeaway for me was one simple sentence – “Play the game of now!” In Suneel’s words “not waiting for courage to take action but taking action and letting courage catch up along the way.”

Being able to have one-on-one conversations with likeminded people from all corners of the world who share in our wonderful industry was one of my favourite parts of this experience. Meeting delegates, presidents and committee members from afar including

the NFDA through to the FIAT-IFTA (the World Organization of Funeral Operatives) was educational and motivating. Exploring the many and varied exhibits plus the innovative ideas to come, seemed never ending with so much to see and experience. I am very proud to say the members of AFDA can hold their heads high regarding our professionalism and the quality of service we provide to our communities – Aussies do it well! Thank you I extend my appreciation to Foresters Financial for sponsoring the Scholarship, what a wonderful opportunity I have been fortunate to be the recipient of. Being able to share face to face time with industry leaders, fellow funeral homeowners, suppliers and educators was more valuable and meaningful than I ever dreamed or can put into words.

To the AFDA, in particular Dale Gilson, Kelly Scott, Asha Dooley and Deanne McLeod for guiding me through this amazing experience and taking me under their wings on the trip and putting up with my bad sense of direction – I sincerely thank you all. I strongly encourage all who are in the position to take up this incredible experience and apply for the 2025 AFDA Scholarship. This enriching experience has enhanced both my personal growth and professional career which I will be forever grateful. GriefLink Launches Funeral Director Suicide Support Guide

The new GriefLink funeral director resource Supporting Survivors of Suicide Loss: A Guide for Funeral Directors was successfully launched in November at an event hosted by Alfred James, Adelaide.

P

hilip Murray, on behalf of Alfred James and AFDA, extended a warm welcome to attendees. Dr Mary Brooksbank of GriefLink then detailed the project before introducing Nadia Clancy MP, Premier’s Advocate for Suicide Prevention, who unveiled the new resource. The launch event was attended by representatives from the Suicide Prevention Council, SA Health and Wellbeing, Anglicare, StandBy, Adelaide and Country PHNs, The Hospital Research Foundation, Palliative Care South Australia, the Research Centre for Palliative Care, Death and

Supporting Survivors of Suicide Loss:

A Guide for Funeral Directors Australian Edition

DR MARY BROOKSBANK, PHILIP MURRAY AND ANDREW SKINNER Dying at Flinders University, the University of Adelaide, the Northern Palliative Care Service, the University of South Australia, and representatives from AFDA SA Member firms.

Supporting Survivors of Suicide Loss: A Guide for Funeral Directors provides essential information and guidance for funeral care professionals to help support those who have experienced the loss of someone they love to suicide. The guide offers practical advice for funeral directors about talking with those bereaved by a suicide loss and suggestions for providing high quality services to them. The Australian edition of the resource was adapted by GriefLink, Inc with support from the South Australian Government for Health and Wellbeing from the American resource of the same name written by Samaritans, Inc., and Education Development Center (EDC). Established in 1998 within the University of Adelaide's Department of General Practice, GriefLink has grown into a vital national resource for navigating the challenges of grief. From the beginning to today its volunteer committee, contributors, and reviewers have come from across Adelaide and South Australia. Undergoing a substantial transformation in 2018, GriefLink was incorporated and relaunched with a renewed dedication to delivering accessible information on grief and bereavement.

Following a South Australian Suicide Prevention Community Grant, GriefLink was able to expand the information and support provided for those who have been bereaved through, or touched by, suicide including the resource for Australian funeral directors – Supporting Survivors of Suicide Loss: A Guide for Funeral Directors. Former AFDA SA/NT Divisional President David Lawlor played a pivotal role in aligning the guide with Australian funeral practices and National President Kelly Scott, contributed a foreword, emphasising the importance of this guide for funeral directors in supporting suicide loss survivors. Without the support and contribution of Ian James (Office of the Chief Psychiatrist, South Australian Government), Tracey Wanganeen (StandBy Support After Suicide), Dr Mary Brooksbank (GriefLink), Dr Katherine Hodgetts (GriefLink), Australian Funeral Directors Association and Laurie Rosenblum (Education Development Center) the adaptation of this guide would not have been possible. A hard copy of Supporting Survivors of Suicide Loss: A Guide for Funeral Directors has been mailed to AFDA Members. Additional copies of the guide are available for download on the AFDA website and the GriefLink website www.grieflink.org.au. 19

Advancing the Industry Imagine a Registered Nurse, burnt out and jaded, searching for another way to help people while having a special interest in death and dying, and everything that meant. Fast forward to today and I have been privileged enough to have spent a year working as a mortician and trainee embalmer at Millingtons Funerals in Hobart and be the 2023 recipient of the prestigious Peter Fuglsang Memorial Scholarship. Despite being so new to the industry I was encouraged to apply for the Peter Fuglsang Memorial Scholarship, as an opportunity for me to network and meet new people. To my surprise, my words resonated with the judges, and I was chosen as the winner of the Scholarship and awarded the prize of attending the AFDA Tasmanian Division AGM weekend held at Barnbougle Dunes in Bridport. The Friday night dinner provided the opportunity to meet people within the industry to have meaningful discussions with and establish new professional relationships. At the dinner I was presented with my Scholarship Certificate by my boss, Travis Tann, who said many kind words about my time at Millingtons and made me feel truly appreciated

Peter Fuglsang Memorial Scholarship

and honoured. On presentation of the certificate, I was asked to make a speech, which was daunting, but the kind words of congratulation and encouragement from so many people afterwards made it worth it. Perhaps the biggest takeaway I took from the AGM weekend was the kindness and enthusiasm of everyone I met, and their willingness to welcome me into the industry with open arms. It was so very different from the professional environment I had come from, and I was touched to know that the people in this industry really do care and are committed to caring for people in their toughest times. The next day began with the AGM followed by a presentation from Peter Mulqueen of Kelly & Partners Bendigo who spoke about what a successful funeral business could look like financially. This was fascinating as he touched on the rise of direct committal cremations and how this is affecting profits for businesses, which is something I have noticed in my short time in the industry. Colin Wilson of Key Business Advisors spoke next about HR best practice and the staffing challenges the funeral industry is currently facing, which was again extremely interesting. The last guest speaker was former AFL player Heath Black, who spoke candidly and openly about his struggles with mental health. He spoke about teamwork, leadership, resilience, and the importance of physical and mental wellbeing, which I’m sure we can all relate to working in the field that we do. It was a refreshing safe space for discussion about a sometimes-taboo topic, and something I felt was so essential for all of us to prioritise in our professional and personal lives. The Saturday night formal dinner ended the weekend on a high note, and I certainly felt very privileged to be sitting at the VIP table!

caring. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and I came away with new information, professional relationships and a feeling of finally belonging within the industry I work in. I would like to thank ICF Insurance Brokers, the Fuglsang family, the Tasmanian Division of the AFDA, Millingtons Funeral and Cemetery Services, and Travis Tann for giving me the opportunity to enter the industry and opening the doors to allow me to continue growing. Lastly and most importantly, to my amazing mentor and friend, Alex Gjocaj who has taught me so much and for inspiring me every day with what’s possible in this incredible industry. I encourage any person who currently is employed in the funeral industry in Tasmania to apply for the next Peter Fuglsang Memorial Scholarship as the experience of attending the AGM weekend is well worth it. Unique Hearses at Amity Rose Funerals Amity Rose Funerals in Albany, Western Australia is redefining the final journey for loved ones by offering families a selection of unique hearses. Families can select a HarleyDavidson TriGlide with a custom-drawn carriage or a vintage Kenworth W923 truck repurposed as a hearse for their loved one's final journey. The addition of the Kenworth truck hearse, believed to be the only one of its kind globally, not only pays homage to the rich history of Kenworth trucks but also provides a weather-resistant and dignified solution for transporting a loved one. Chris Woonings from Amity Rose Funerals collaborated with local craftsman Wayne Lenegan for the design and creation of these specialised hearses. Wayne, a skilled aluminum fabricator, brought the concepts

to life. The conversion of the Kenworth truck hearse was a particularly complex process, involving the removal of the turntable and chassis adjustments. Registration also proved challenging due to the absence of a specific category for a truck hearse. The motorcycle carriage draws inspiration from the elegance of a horse-drawn carriage, evoking a sense of timeless grace. The vintage Kenworth truck, on the other hand, was born out of necessity and innovation. A prior experience with a standard truck in inclement weather prompted Chris to envision a hearse with an enclosed space, leading to the birth of the distinctive Kenworth hearse.

Families have embraced these distinctive choices, with families selecting the HarleyDavidson hearse for motorcycle enthusiasts or those desiring a regal departure reminiscent of a horse-drawn carriage. The Kenworth hearse, with its masculine lines and shipping container-inspired design, appeals to those with a passion for trucks or a desire for a unique and memorable farewell. These hearses have been chosen for individuals with specific affinities, such as a lady holding the first female motorcycle license in Albany, or an 11-year-old truck enthusiast. Amity Rose Funerals is continuing to explore additional specialised vehicles for their fleet as their distinctive hearses provide families not just with a service but an experience that honors the uniqueness of each individual's life. 23

Industry Spotlight Planning a funeral or memorial for a child is one of the most difficult times in life.

W

ith the help of families who have walked in those shoes, as well as health professionals and those working in funeral care, Palliative Care Australia (PCA) has released a booklet and accompanying video to support and guide families.

Palliative Care Australia Guide to Planning a Child's Funeral

AFDA's expertise in providing support and guidance during such critical times. During the Project a lack of resources around planning for a child’s funeral was consistently highlighted when working with parents, families, and carers. The booklet and accompanying video were produced to fill this gap and to show the support a funeral director can offer to parents, families and carers who are faced with planning a funeral or memorial for their child.

“One of the real strengths of the Project has been that strong voice of lived experience shaping actions and outcomes, and what we heard was that there was nothing to help families navigate the emotional The need for these and practical challenges resources came that naturally come with from parents and farewelling a child or young carers themselves person,” says Camilla Rowland, Chief Executive Officer, PCA.

With funding from the Department of Health and Aged Care, the booklet and video are a collaboration between Palliative Care Australia, Paediatric Palliative Care Australia and New Zealand, and the Australian Funeral Directors Association (AFDA) as part of the Paediatric Palliative Care National Action Plan Project. The Paediatric Palliative Care National Action Plan Project was initiated to support health professionals to respond to the specialist needs of children with life limiting conditions. The Project involved working closely with parents, families and carers to ensure that their voices were at the centre of all activities undertaken by the Project and called upon

National President Kelly Scott. The video was produced to help parents, families and carers navigate the initial step of contacting a funeral director which many of those involved in the Project found to be overwhelming. The video assists in this process, and provides valuable insights into how a funeral director can offer support during this challenging time. “There's no such thing as a silly question,” says Kelly Scott. “If you have a need that we can help with it’s really important that you express that. Don’t let anyone rush you, take your time, think about all the options, and really think about what is important to you and your family.” Free copies of the booklet can be ordered or downloaded from the AFDA website and the Paediatric Palliative Care website. “We are very proud of this valuable tool for Australian families, it comes with our care and support, thank you to all those who have made it possible,” says Camilla Rowland.

“This booklet and video meet that need and I have no doubt will be a welcome support.” The 23 page ‘Guide to Planning a Funeral for your Child’ is available free as a digital download or printed hard copy covering a range of topics: •

By the age of only 17, Craig had been put through his driving test, and was at the wheel of some beautiful Daimler limousines and hearses. Discussions with DPaC continue concerning the prescribed business register, with the goal of ensuring compliance among all funeral directors across the State with the requirements of the Burial and Cremation Act 2019. Conversations are also ongoing regarding the potential development of precremation guidelines and checklists.

MCCD ISSUE The Tasmanian Council has responded to concerns of heightened pressure from funeral directors for the prompt issuance of Medical Certificates Cause of Death (MCCD) raised by a doctor in a medical practice. The Council's response emphasised its commitment to collaborative efforts with various sectors connected to the funeral industry to ensure a seamless experience for families. It stresses the importance of timely MCCD submissions within the 48-hour timeframe and outlines the potential ramifications on funeral arrangements if not adhered to.

advice on how funeral directors can support grieving parents. Thank you to Bowra & O’Dea for hosting members at Sid’s Place Function Centre and for conducting a tour of the venue. The highlight of the AGM dinner was the presentation of the AFDA Distinguished Service Award to Errol Barrett in recognition of his contribution to the industry which you can read more about on page 15. The final event of the year was held on Friday 24 November and incorporated a tour of the new State Mortuary facilities before the Christmas function was held at the Vibe Hotel, Perth.

ADVOCACY Councillors represent members at quarterly stakeholder meetings with Metropolitan Cemeteries Board (MCB). These meetings are strengthening the relationship between MCB and funeral directors and as a result improving the support provided to grieving families. This includes increased training on lowering and grave site safety. Bernardine Brierty is representing the WA Division at a three-year review of the Pricing Code. The transition appears to have gone smoothly. 29

Victorian Division EVENTS AND TRAINING Planning has commenced for the 2024 Victorian Division events schedule with the following dates confirmed so far: •

28 February – SW/NW Zone Meeting & Council Meeting • 15 May – SE (Gippsland) Zone Meeting • 26 June – NE Zone Meeting & Council Meeting • 23-25 August – Joint TAS/VIC AGM & Council Meeting • 16 October – Metro Zone Meeting • 29 November – Christmas Social Function & Council Meeting Locations and venues will be announced in the new year. The Victorian Council remains committed to providing affordable education and training opportunities, having agreed to continue subsidising training costs for the 2023-2024 financial year.

CORONERS COURT The Victorian Council was pleased to meet with St John Ambulance (SJA) to address delays in repatriating deceased individuals from the Coroners Court of Victoria to regional Victorian members by SJA. The meeting was positive, with SJA proposing the introduction of confirmation booking emails. This initiative will provide greater clarity for funeral directors regarding repatriation timeframes, ultimately assisting families in making necessary funeral arrangements.

VOCAT CONSULTATION The Victorian Council is pleased to be consulting on the new Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS), replacing the Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal (VOCAT). Following AFDA's successful collaboration in the past with

VOCAT on establishing guidelines for funeral expenses to ensure adequate funeral funds for crime victims' families, Victorian Councillors are recommending similar guidelines be integrated into the FAS. Councillors are aiming for a comprehensive review to account for industry cost increases, benefitting both families and funeral directors.

CEMETERIES SECTOR In October, GMCT (Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust) consulted with the Victorian Council who provided valuable input into GMCT's proposed improvements to their interment booking process and communications with families and funeral directors. These enhancements are designed to minimise the risk of grave location errors which the Council supports.

Queensland Division QUARTERLY MEETING The final Quarterly Meeting was held on K’gari Island (formerly known as Fraser Island) on 17-19 November. The weekend started with the Council Meeting on the Friday afternoon where the focus was pitched towards identifying one or two key goals for 2024 and locking in dates/ locations for 2024 meetings. The Native Australian Feast on Friday night started with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony and Butchulla Laws for K’gari by the Butchulla People. A highlight on the Saturday, following the Queensland Divisional Update, Open Forum

and Sponsor Updates was the Cultural Awareness & Capability Workshop from the Butchulla People through their K’gari Creation Story Animation, Returning to Country – what does this mean if Butchulla Never Say Goodbye, Cultural Advice on Sorry Business and the Three Laws of K’gari. The knowledge sharing through Sand Art and Bush Tucker were also highlights.

EVENTS AND EDUCATION The Queensland Division delivered a number of training days throughout the year, with an emphasis on Mortuary Training and Funeral Arranger Training. Most events were sold out, a very pleasing outcome for the QLD Division. The Division is looking forward to building on this enthusiasm and offering more training in 2024. 31

OVER 25 YEARS EXPERIENCE SERVING THE FUNERAL INDUSTRY

News The Grief Centre was founded in 2009 and our vision is to support all people living through loss.

A

s a funeral director, you will know the scenario only too well: once the practicalities of the funeral are over and the bereaved head back to their daily lives, your families’ emotional support needs can often increase. It is challenging for them to know where to turn for help, and for you to give reliable recommendations. A partnership with the Grief Centre provides this invaluable post funeral grief support for your families. Post funeral care Our team has worked alongside Australian and New Zealand funeral homes since 2015 to provide a proactive wraparound service on their behalf, supporting grieving families and cementing the funeral home’s reputation as a business that truly cares for the wellbeing of their clients. When you partner with the Grief Centre Bereavement Support Service, your families receive cobranded bereavement resources, a loss and grief booklet, and information about our service. They are then contacted by one of our Grief Companions to check in on their wellbeing and offered up to a year of ongoing phone support, as needed. Grief Centre General Manager Katrina King says “This wellbeing call about 6-8 weeks post-funeral

Grief Centre Post Funeral Grief Support

provides a safe space for the bereaved to talk about their loss and how they are feeling. They can talk freely about their person, their life, and their loss, to laugh and cry and have someone there to listen.” If the grief is complex or unresolved, they can be referred on to a complimentary counselling session with a Grief Centre Counsellor. Finally, a co-branded card is sent on the one-year anniversary of the death, on behalf of your funeral home. As part of the service, we also check in to see how the family felt about their experience with your funeral home, providing valuable independent client feedback. What people say The Grief Centre team’s commitment and experience in providing this service is illustrated by the feedback we often receive on what a difference this support makes to those experiencing loss.

“There has been one constant source of support and empathy since [my wife] died – your Grief Companion. Many times, I felt so isolated and lonely. In those times I knew that she would call, at the end of the month, and I could talk to her about my feelings, about my challenges and know that she listened and cared. She has helped me to move forward, and I am so grateful for her understanding and advice. Thank you for having such a lovely caring person to support those of us who are grieving.” – recent feedback from a Grief Centre Bereavement Support client.

KATRINA KING, GRIEF CENTRE AUSTRALASIAN GENERAL MANAGER branded with the funeral home or group for a personalised experience and corporate rates are available for large teams. We are happy to discuss bespoke professional support and development packages tailor-made for your team. You can connect with Grief Centre at www.griefcentre.com.au or email aftercare@griefcentre.com.au.

Supporting those who support others In addition to Bereavement Support, the Grief Centre can also offer important employee support for your team with a qualified counselling supervisor and professional development training webinars in loss and grief and other relevant topics. These range from the theories of suicide to resilience and professional wellbeing. We also offer an online self-paced course which examines loss, trauma and grief and defines what good support is, for those who work with people experiencing any form of loss or grief. When paying please don’t forget to include a reference point such as your name and invoice number for the AIE team to identify who the payment is for, particularly if the payment is made by your employer, and please don’t hesitate to reach out if your work or financial circumstances have changed. AIE Board of Directors The AIE AGM was held via zoom on 15 November 2023. Prior to the AGM nominations were called for the AIE Board of Directors. One nomination was received from Travis Tann of Millingtons Funeral Services. During the AGM the AIE Board of Directors for 2023/2024 was announced as follows: Andrew Mitchell, Chairman; Danielle Calvaresi, Vice Chairman; John Tidman; Alistair Shaw; Kim Browne and Travis Tann. There are no vacancies on the AIE Board of Directors. Education and CPD CPD training was held in NSW in October at the InvoCare Lidcombe Operations Centre. Many thanks must go to the InvoCare Lidcombe Management Team of Lisa Armstrong, Jill Miller and InvoCare General Manager – NSW/ACT Funerals, Bradley Debba for allowing the AIE to make use of the facility. The training over two days consisted of Dodge mortuary cosmetics (beginner to intermediate) facilitated by Robert Cepanec and Kiera Rae from Mazwell. Thank you also to Craig Caldwell for his generosity with costs

extended to those members of both AIE and BIE in attendance. The AIE also held a training day on 14 October 2023 for Victorian Members and others who could make it to Melbourne. Kathy Hodges, the AIE VIC State Coordinator hosted the day at IFFIS (Independent Funeral Industry Support Services). The training session started with a very special opportunity to hear from the embalming team that responded to the Port Arthur incident in 1996. Kathy Hodges acted as facilitator and interviewed the three members of the team. It was a privilege to hear of their experiences, the outcomes of their important work as well as how they now feel looking back at the event. The second session, led by AIE Board Member Ian Warren looked at ‘Matters of the Heart’, in particular, the path blood follows through the pulmonary circulation to better understand one of the main causes for short-circuiting. The last speaker was Andrew Hogan, a Learning and Development Consultant with over 30 years of funeral industry experience. Andrew led the discussion on the relationship between the arranger and the embalmer and how a good relationship between these parties can enhance the viewing experience for the families we serve. On a happy note, I would like to welcome back Alistair Shaw to Board duties. Alistair is now out of hospital and currently convalescing at home as he completes the rehabilitation process towards returning to work. Alistair is very appreciative of all the wishes of good will and support from his embalming colleagues both here and in New Zealand. In closing I would like to wish the AIE Board, the AFDA Executive and National Office team, and members of both the AIE and AFDA a very merry and safe Christmas and a prosperous and happy New Year. Take care everyone and I look forward to working with you all in 2024. Andrew Mitchell AIE Chairman

ACCA Update

In my last report, I advised that we had engaged an external consultant to commence a review of the ACCA Strategic Plan. Interviews with ACCA members and other industry stakeholders informed the ACCA Board and Executive of some of the key things that they believe are important for ACCA to focus on. We have already embraced this information and have initiated changes to our Annual Conference format by including break-out sessions and interactive panel discussions

In writing this report to industry colleagues, I have reflected on all that has happened in my first year as President of ACCA.

Chris's dedication and tireless commitment have contributed greatly to the success we have enjoyed over the years. In early November we welcomed Ben Kelly as the new CEO of ACCA. Ben brings a wealth of industry experience, enthusiasm, and passion to our Association, and we are confident that under Ben’s guidance, ACCA will continue to grow, innovate, and make a positive impact on our industry and membership. On behalf of the ACCA Board, I would like to wish all AFDA Members a very happy Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. Lauren Hardgrove ACCA President

Word Geelong’s New Blue Tree

Geelong Cemeteries Trust has unveiled a striking new addition in the grounds of Geelong Memorial Park – the Blue Tree. More than just a sculpture, this symbolic tree is part of the Blue Tree Project, a mental health awareness initiative which aims to spark difficult conversations and encourage people to speak up when battling mental health concerns. The opening event garnered significant support, with local Councillors and Representatives of Parliament attending to emphasise the importance of

Kim Edgar, a local mother and advocate for mental health and suicide prevention, delivered a moving speech at the event about the significance of the Blue Tree Project. Kim lost her son to suicide in 2018; the same year Jayden Whyte, who inspired the Blue Tree Project, took his own life. A Blue Tree, which is typically dead before being painted by the community, has in this instance been locally made and installed as an enduring symbol. Chair of Geelong Cemeteries Trust, John Mitchell, expressed the profound impact of having a tangible reminder like the Blue Tree to mental health awareness within the region and coincided with both National Paint a Blue Tree Day and World Mental Health Day. Statistically, Greater Geelong faces a higher percentage rate of mental health conditions, standing at 11.1%, compared to the statewide and national averages of 8.8%.

encourage difficult conversations and advocate for mental health support. He stated, “This is about bringing people together and caring for our community. The Blue Tree is a beacon of hope.” Geelong Cemeteries Trust warmly welcomes all within the community to visit the Blue Tree.
