In this exclusive interview, we spoke with Alexandra Pappas, the founder of No. 22 Home, an Australian brand creating unique giftware, crockery, and tableware. Below, Alexandra shares insights into their design philosophy, inspiration, and commitment to bringing affordable luxury to the Australian homewares market.

No. 22 Home is known for its playful and vibrant take on giftware, crockery, and tableware. How do you incorporate these elements while maintaining a sophisticated and elegant aesthetic?

We carefully balance and curate the designers we collaborate with to ensure our products have a fun, playful element while also being classic and sophisticated. Our products are designed to create memories, so we include playful and vibrant details for people to remember them, while also making them timeless for use across many occasions and years.

The brand takes inspiration from global cultures and styles. Which specific cultures or regions have had the most significant influence on your product designs?

Greek culture, with its love for entertaining and making people happy, has greatly influenced No. 22 Home. As someone with Greek and Cypriot heritage, I draw inspiration from this to create the brand and our product range. Our Destinations Collections are inspired by my experiences and appreciation of specific cities. Capri's abundant lemons and delicate tile designs, and Paris' morning rituals, bistro cuisine, and passenger bikes have all played a role in shaping our collections.

Your collection of Paris-inspired plates garnered an incredible 5,000-person waitlist in 2023. Please set the scene around this sought-after collection that captured the imagination.

What's not to love about Paris? After almost three years of no international travel due to COVID, this collection launched just as borders were opening and people were starting to travel again. For those who were not travelling, this collection either made you want to go to Paris or conjured up positive memories of the City of Love. The delicate, hand-drawn designs by the talented Lauren from The Blackline Bottega were so inviting that it was easy to feel love at first sight for them, hence the strong demand and waitlist.

Can you share more details about the quality materials and skilled artisans involved in creating your products?

Most of our products, specifically our tableware, are produced by hand in one way or another. The designs on our Capri plates are hand-drawn, with artisans painting the lines and dots without machinery. It blows you away to see it in person - thousands of plates being drawn on in vibrant colours, each with different tones and strokes. We get a lot of questions about this as people are confused about why their plates may not look identical, but we believe this adds to the charm of them and makes you feel like you could be in Capri.

You are committed to bringing affordable luxury-inspired edits to the Australian homewares market. Did you identify a gap in the market that inspired this focus?

Not really. Despite my best efforts to remain objective, I feel I am my biggest customer and have always aimed to create products I would use in my own home at a comfortable price point. Our products are made from high-quality, timeless materials, positioning us above trend-focused brands but not quite in the luxury tableware league. While we've navigated this market carefully, I believe our niche has developed organically.

How do you see No. 22 Home's products evolving to accommodate the ever-evolving world of entertaining and home design?

We strive to evolve and improve our products while maintaining a delicate balance to ensure they remain timeless rather than simply following trends. Our products are designed to evoke warm, positive emotions and be cherished by customers, whether for entertaining or daily use. We aim to be part of special memories, from intimate meals to gatherings with friends, and believe there will always be a need for sophisticated, quality products ■

Burrata with Turmeric Oil and Macadamia Crumb

Lollo at Melbourne's W Hotel unveils Head Chef Xavier Tocco’s curated recipe for Burrata with Turmeric Oil and Macadamia Crumb.

Ingredients Method

125 g burrata

Dukkha

20 g raw macadamia nuts

3 g cumin seeds

3 g coriander seeds

1 g fennel seeds

Turmeric Oil

5 g turmeric

50 ml extra virgin olive oil

1 coffee filter

Garnish

Edible flowers

Basil leaves

Sea salt flakes

Fresh ground pepper

Serves 2

Turmeric Oil

In a small saucepan, heat the olive oil and turmeric for a couple of minutes; the oil should not exceed 85 degrees Celsius. Set aside for about 30 minutes to infuse before straining through a coffee filter. Store in the refrigerator until needed.

Macadamia Dukkha

Preheat the oven to 140 degrees Celsius. Spread all the spices on a flat baking tray and bake for about 5-10 minutes. Using a spice grinder or a mortar, coarsely grind the spices. Chop the macadamia nuts with a knife on a clean chopping board. In a bowl, combine the chopped macadamia nuts, ground spices, and salt; mix well with a spoon.

To Serve

Place the burrata in the centre of a small bowl or plate, drizzle with turmeric oil, and sprinkle generously with the macadamia dukkha. Garnish with edible flower petals and fresh basil leaves.

This recipe is perfect for sharing with friends and family, accompanied by a loaf of fresh bread from your local bakery.

Change Makers Deborah de Rossi

For this month’s Change Makers feature, we spoke to Deborah de Rossi, the recently appointed CEO of one of our wonderful charity partners, You Matter. Deborah shared insights into her new role, the organisation's vision for supporting women and children recovering from family violence, and her aspirations for the future of You Matter.

You Matter is a small, for-purpose organisation that creates Havens of Hope: fully functional homes designed and created based on the individual needs of women and children so they can lead safe and happy lives.

What drew you to the role of CEO at You Matter, and what aspects of the organisation inspired you to join?

My extensive career in community services, particularly in executive roles focused on specialist family violence services, drew me to the CEO position at You Matter. I am passionate about creating the best outcomes for women and children impacted by family violence and the need for collective, community-wide approaches to address this systemic issue.

My own lived experience of homelessness as a child and witnessing my mother navigate a nearly impossible service system as a single woman facing significant barriers has always driven me, especially in my role with You Matter.

Reflecting on the legacy of the organisation, how do you plan to build upon the existing foundation to lead You Matter into a new era?

Eight years after the Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence, despite significant progress, current statistics and headlines show there's still a long way to go in addressing family violence meaningfully. You Matter plays a vital role in assisting women and children in recovery and healing. As a new organisation, it's important to be bold, articulate our contribution, gather evidence supporting our impact, and highlight the role of healing in long-term recovery. Securing adequate funding and building strong partnerships across sectors is essential for a whole-ofcommunity approach. You Matter's success lies in the immediate and impactful work we do, creating Havens of Hope and achieving safety and security for over 207 women and 245 children since inception.

What is the process for securing a Haven of Hope for the women and children seeking a fresh start in life?

Our primary relationship is with government-funded family violence service providers throughout Metropolitan Melbourne, who refer

women and children transitioning from crisis to recovery stages. These women, having secured long-term accommodation, often face financial stress and risk returning to the perpetrator. You Matter steps in by creating a fully functional home based on their needs, ensuring they are not forced back for economic reasons. We generally deliver a Haven within a week of referral, providing immediate, impactful support that helps women and children start their journey of healing.

What strategies do you envision for engaging the wider community in a collective effort to address family violence recovery and support?

You Matter has commenced a formalised engagement program involving corporate groups volunteering in our warehouse, initiated a broader volunteer recruitment process to engage individuals with much-needed corporate infrastructure skills, and participated in key speaking events to raise awareness. We are blessed with a skilled and engaged Board who support us across a wide range of functions. Men and boys must be engaged to stop using violence, protect women, and hold one another accountable. Recognising children impacted by family violence as victimsurvivors is crucial to address trauma and break intergenerational cycles of abuse.

How would you like to see the future of You Matter evolve?

My vision for You Matter is to continue responding to our community's needs and build a strong evidence base for the importance of healing and recovery interventions. Even if there is growth in response to demand, it's crucial to never lose the principle of engaging the community in our work. This connects a broad range of people to the solution and gives a message of hope to the women and children we support that they matter
