contents 8>> Do this ISSUE 58 MAY/JUN19 Luxe last time for me. I am sad to say goodbye after more than a few hundred pages, many thousands of words and a meaningful amount of champagne thanks to the largesse of Luxe. Yes, that bit has been exhausting. But new adventures await for me and allow a time for reflection on a heady ten years. When Luxe started life we knew nothing of such cosseting comforts as ‘hygge’. Staying in and ‘me time’ weren’t the pastime they’ve become. And we were blissfully unaware of Brexit. We rarely delved into the world of Instagram and our gin was invariably Gordon’s. Tasting menus were taking over our dining lives, Terry Laybourne was cooking a then so-exotic Sardinian flatbread for us. Our social diary pages celebrated first birthdays for Hotel du Vin in Newcastle and the opening of Chadwicks in Maltby, which still has its place in the magazine today. Debrah Dhugga was living it up in New York, our Little Luxe Nina Robinson was the sweetest toddler and BBC Look North’s Jeff Brown was telling us about his sartorial shopping at Edo menswear in Clayton Road, Jesmond. Happily handing over the reins. Leaving Luxe in the hands of Elysia and Jessica - who, together, have helped bring the pages to life over the years. Life has indeed been luxe and it’s been a joy to share the fun in making Luxe what we always wanted it to be – regional, relevant and entertaining. Thanks for reading.

ADVERTORIAL
An end to the Blame Game In what will be the biggest change in divorce law for 50 years, the Government has committed itself to introducing “no fault divorce” with new law to be introduced as soon as Parliament can find time. This is a change which has been welcomed by almost everybody who deals with family breakdown as it finally appears that ‘no-fault’ divorce will be the law. NO BLAME, NO GAME >> Divorce was last overhauled in the 1970s and since the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973, the legal position has been that, although there was one ground for divorce - that the marriage had ‘irretrievably broken down’ every case had to be pigeonholed into one of five ‘facts. The only ‘facts’ that did not require waiting for at least 2 years, were adultery and ‘unreasonable behaviour’. When reform proved too complicated in the 1990s, dropping fault was shelved and divorcing couples were left to carry on the blame game, even though it worsened conflict, as the Nuffield Foundation repeatedly proved. In the absence of reform, people in the legal system tried to cooperate to find ways to reduce recrimination and indeed official judicial Guidance was given that the allegations should be as inoffensive as a
Judge could reasonably interpret as signs that the marriage had indeed broken down. We made that approach work for a decade. Unfortunately, that ‘on the nod’ approach to avoiding offence in divorce petitions was torpedoed by the case of Mr and Mrs Owens. HIGH DRAMA IN THE SUPREME COURT: OWENS V OWENS >> The media got interested when Mr Owens spent a considerable amount of money to stop his wife getting a divorce: most commentators would probably say that his reduction of family assets by spending so much on lawyers to delay divorce should have been evidence in itself that there was ‘unreasonable behaviour’. Alas, it was not and as Mr Owens had enough money to fight the case to the bitter end, the case went to the Supreme Court. In the Supreme Court, when the judiciary went over the case with the finest of fine-tooth combs, they found that Mrs Owens had not clearly proved that there was ‘unreasonable behaviour’ and ‘irretrievable breakdown’ to the satisfaction of the trial judge so she could not have a divorce. Top judges Lord Wilson and Lady Hale had the frustrating job of announcing that Mr Owens had ‘won’ his case, but went on to announce very loudly and clearly that Parliament must reform the law, because fault-based divorce law was no longer fit
for purpose. Mr Owens ‘won’ his battle, but the reaction to the asinine nature of the law means he has lost the war and reform is finally on its way to aid women like his wife. BLAME IT ON THE SUNSHINE, MOONLIGHT, GOOD TIMES OR BOOGIE (BUT NOT YOUR SPOUSE!) >> Faced with a tidal wave of opinion that blame ‘creates or increases conflict between divorcing couples’ to an unacceptable degree even this Canute-like Government had to accept that fault had to go. The proposed new system will avoid decisions such as Owens in future, not only by removing the need for ‘conduct-based’ arguments, but by removing the ability of spouses to contest a divorce. We understand that couples will eventually be able to issue divorce proceedings jointly. This follows the relatively recent introduction of an online-system for issuing divorce proceedings. Taken together, it is hoped that these changes will further simplify what has for some time been a largely administrative process. Having anticipated these trends, Major Family Law has, for the last 8 years, offered a fixed-fee package of £250 for cooperative uncontested divorces within England & Wales – in addition to a no-obligation, initial consultation for those who want the assurance of support from a family lawyer.

Sweet charity Doing good things in the North East, our charity round-up... CHEERS! >> The Twice Brewed Inn has made its first donation to the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. The Bardon Mill has chosen the Foundation, which helps improve the lives of those affected by Motor Neurone Disease (MND), as its charity of the year. Its first fundraiser saw a pub quiz and silent auction raise £1,100 for the charity, set up by former Scotland, Lions and Newcastle Falcons player Doddie Weir OBE who was diagnosed with MND in 2017. Rugby star Doddie is known to many regulars at the Twice Brewed Inn as his wife Kathy comes from nearby Bellingham. Steve Blair, manager at Twice Brewed Inn, said: “We chose the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation for our charity of the year because Doddie is known to so many of our customers. “To hear of a young chap being diagnosed with such a terrible condition has really been felt in the Tyne Valley. It’s a worthy and current cause we could all empathise with.” myname5doddie.co.uk
FEEL-GOOD GOLF >> Sir A P McCoy OBE hosted a special charity golf day at Rockliffe Hall on 29 April to raise money for the Injured Jockeys Fund, of which he is President. Teams of four were invited to sign up for the event, which last year welcomed competitors including Alan Shearer CBE, Tony Pulis and Neil Bausor. The day began with breakfast rolls and hot drinks before teams took to the course, with competitions including Nearest the Pin, Longest Drive and Beat the Pro. A prize giving and a two course dinner then took place in the Grassholme Suite. The Injured Jockeys Fund is based in Newmarket and was founded following the devastating accidents of Tim Brookshaw, and a few months later, Paddy Farrell, in the 1964 Grand National. Both falls resulted in severe paralysis which immediately ended their careers. The charity has since spent over £18 million helping over 1,000 jockeys, whose injuries have forced some of them to give up riding, providing care, compassion and financial help. rockliffehall.com

TEN GOOD YEARS >> A heartfelt celebration marked the 10th anniversary of the Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle. Sir Bobby’s family, staff, patients and Sir Bobby Robson Foundation fundraisers celebrated the occasion with an Open Day at the centre. The centre is now one of the most active cancer clinical trials units in the UK and was recognised as a CRUK Centre of Excellence for this activity in 2016. It offers patients from across the North East and Cumbria access to early drug trials and potential new treatments, including immunotherapy drugs that are proving very effective for some cancers which would otherwise be extremely difficult to treat. Professor Ruth Plummer, director of the Sir Bobby Robson Centre, was Sir Bobby’s consultant and is a trustee of his Foundation. “I hope Sir Bobby would be pleased with the ongoing work we’re doing here. It wouldn’t have been possible without his commitment and the support of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation”, she said. >> (fore L-R) Andrew Robson (Sir Bobby’s son), Lady Elsie and Professor Ruth Plummer (director of the Sir Bobby Robson Centre/Sir Bobby’s consultant).
ALL SMILES >> Law student, Amber Lockett, is raising funds for Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice in Middlesbrough through her involvement with the national Supermodel England pageant. Amber, from Teesside, studies Law at Northumbria University and hopes to specialise in criminal law when she qualifies. As part of the Supermodel England competition, participants are called on to support a charity and get involved with fundraising. Amber is raising money for Zoe’s Place which provides palliative, respite and end-of-life care to babies and infants. Over the three years she has competed in pageants she has raised over £1,500 for the charity. Amber says: “Pageants have been a massive confidence-booster for me, after struggling with bullies through school and sixth form. I love getting all dressed up and fundraising for charity so this is the perfect hobby for me. I have met friends for life and gained self-confidence. Many people see pageants as a negative thing, for girls who love themselves, but in reality the kindest of girls take part.” She is running her own pageant, Miss Grand Newcastle, on 14 July at Gateshead Masonic Hall. There are doughnuts – then there are Proven Goods doughnuts. We have a sweet and sticky crush on the good things coming out of the Hoults Yard kitchen in Ouseburn. The cult concoctions, created by duo Joe Millar and Amber Lowe, have tapped into an artisan market for top-quality fresh, handmade doughnuts which are hand-rolled and baked in small batches. The dough is proven three times over 17 hours to develop the flavour and fried fresh five mornings a week. Seasonal fruits are used as fillings. One of the favourite flavours is rhubarb and custard - and The Homer is also very popular. Prices start at £2 for a single doughnut. Hunt them down in the Maling Court area of Hoults Yard, open Wednesday – Sunday (10am – 3pm). For more information, see their Facebook page, Instagram or Twitter account - @provengoodsco

SUMMER NIGHTS
Take the party outdoors this summer with this collection of glorious garden furniture from Barker and Stonehouse. Perfect for entertaining in style... As the nights become lighter and temperatures start to heat up, it’s time to start thinking about your outdoor space. Whether you favour family dinners under the sun or love a spot of socialising with friends long into the evening, make sure your garden is ready for any occasion with the right garden furniture. With outdoor living becoming increasingly popular, creating an al fresco entertainment area that’s as beautiful and stylish as your interior is number one on many renovating and decorating agendas. Introduce spacious seating to make visitors feel at home in your garden without feeling squeezed into a tight spot. Using a mixture of large corner sofas, laid-back daybeds and casual loungers, you can create a chilled-out space where guests can float between zones and settle themselves into comfort. A simple bench and an extra chair or two placed around the garden provide versatility and a place to seek a quiet escape. Of course, when the sun is shining, there’s no better way to enjoy the great outdoors than eating al fresco around a dining table. For effortless style, a dining set will create the cohesion and uniformity that’s perfect for hosting dinner parties and celebrations. However, if you’re hoping for a more relaxed vibe, then you can pair a table with
MAY/JUN19
individual benches and chairs to seat as many or as few as required. Keep the fun flowing with a dining table with a built-in ice bucket to ensure your guests (or host!) won’t miss a thing, allowing you to enjoy a long and pleasant meal with aperitifs and digestifs on hand. After dinner, why not bring happy hour to your home with an area dedicated solely to more intimate socialising and soirees? An outdoor bar set which provides suitable elegance without being too formal is the perfect environment for an evening of beer and bubbles (or non-alcoholic beverages!). For something a little different, consider a contemporary garden hanging chair. The cosiest of seats with space enough for one (or two little people), a hanging chair brings a sense of tranquillity and relaxation to offset the bustle of a busy get-together. Guests can enjoy a feeling of freedom and take the weight off their feet while being cocooned in comfort. Place two together and you’ll create a super cosy haven that feels a world away from the everyday, perfect for private conversations. Be warned, though. You may find this special spot is in high demand! As the night draws in, a roaring fire allows party goers to stay huddled in warmth without relocating indoors. Sofa sets with fire pits included can turn your alfresco event into a magical ambient evening
underneath the setting sun. The ultimate outdoor alternative to cosying up beside a fireplace, a summer night around a fire pit is sure to involve story-sharing and a warm atmosphere. For an added touch of tranquillity, lanterns are perfect for placing on table tops or scattering around a patio area. Filled with candles, they will illuminate the space and
add a soft glow to your garden party. Furniture and accessories all play a part in creating the perfect outdoor entertaining experience and leaving your guests impressed. With everything from sun loungers to dining sets, there’s something to suit every space at Barker and Stonehouse. Discover the full range of garden furniture online at www.barkerandstonehouse.co.uk.

In April 2019, I reached a milestone after having worked in the law for three decades to be appointed Head of the Private Family Law Team at Tilly Bailey & Irvine Law Firm. It turned my mind to thinking how the law itself has changed in my specialist field of matrimonial and family law over this time although it will be nowhere near as different to the law in 1842 when TBI was established as a business. I wonder how the founding members would view today’s family law landscape and in particular the current divorce system. Divorce proceedings are currently governed by law made in 1973 when attitudes to divorce were much different now. It was very much the “blame game” but over time that has softened even though we are still governed by the same 1973 law. Undefended divorces are generally dealt with on paper and rarely is an attendance required at court. In 1995 Parliament considered changing the rules on petitions and make them on a no fault basis, but the legislation was abandoned. In 2018, a defended divorce case (which are rare) hit the headlines because the wife relied on the fact of her husband’s alleged behaviour in her divorce petition. However, the Supreme Court upheld the husband’s case. It means that the wife has to remain married to her estranged husband for a few more years before she can rely on the fact that the parties will have been separated for over 5 years. This case and the ensuing press coverage, has resulted in Parliament being asked to consider legislating on a “no
fault” divorce system which will be introduced as soon as parliamentary time allows so it is not with immediate effect but certainly I believe a it will eventually be made law. Some will argue that will make divorcing easier. In my experience, it will not because for most parties separating is an emotionally difficult time. At the end of the day, a party is making a decision to end a marriage (or indeed a relationship) and it is a highly stressful and anxious period in their lives. If issuing a divorce petition without pointing the finger at the other party can ease the acrimony that can result from a party being blamed for their behaviour, then that has to be beneficial particularly for children of the family. Wendy Beacom is Head of the Private Family Law Team and can meet with clients at any of TBI’s four Teesside offices – Wynyard, Hartlepool, Stockton and Barnard Castle – as well as further afield for legal matters across the North East. You can contact her and the Tilly Bailey & Irvine family department for legal advice at wbeacom@tbilaw.co.uk

HOMECOMING
Jim Moir swaps his ‘Big Night Out’ for a trip back up north to showcase his first ever art exhibition in Newcastle. A comedian with art at his heart…
A BIG DAY OUT You might know him as one half of Vic and Bob. You might know him as the man who made you ‘Dizzy’. We’re getting to know his artistic side as The Biscuit Factory prepares to dish up his first ever art exhibition in Newcastle. The comedian, actor, presenter and artist best-known by his stage name, Vic Reeves, grew up in Darlington and is delighted to return home to showcase his collection of paintings, drawings, etchings, photographs and sculptures. ‘A Mountain of Turkish Delight’ is a new collection of works inspired by familiar northern faces and landmarks, showing at the Tyneside gallery from 9th - 19th May 2019. He takes a break from Vic and Bob’s Big Night Out to tell Elysia Agnew about his creative comedy… MY ‘A MOUNTAIN OF TURKISH DELIGHT’ EXHIBITION AT THE BISCUIT FACTORY… Is really just a collection of the drawings, prints and paintings I’ve been working on over the last year or so. The exhibition doesn’t follow a particular theme, but you might see some familiar faces, nods to the north and a bit of TV culture thrown in. MY ART HAS ALWAYS BEEN A BIG PART OF LIFE… People just don’t know it! It’s something I’ve done forever - the TV is really just a side-line to the art. I was into art duo, Gilbert & George when I was at art school and I put on a performance piece, which turned out to be Big Night Out. So I guess the TV stuff was a by-product of what I already did. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ME… Includes a bit of everything: art, comedy, writing. I dip in and out of various things,
20 luxe-magazine.co.uk
but I consider it all art. I’m what you might call prolific - in other words, I just can’t stop! I work on my art virtually every day, but a normal day ‘at the office’, so to speak, would be me writing with Bob. We used to have an actual office, but we’re both tight so decided to write in my kitchen instead! We’re currently busy putting together another Big Night Out for the BBC. It’s been 30 years since the first one, so it’s going to be something quite special. Not only do we write the show, but we also design the costumes and get involved in the general artwork. Everything that I’ve ever done has always had a heavy leaning towards art and design. I’ve also got two films on the go at the moment. Most recently, I’ve been in London writing Disco Pier with an actor called Tony Pitts. BEHIND THE SCENES AT BIG NIGHT OUT… Is just an absolute hoot, to be honest. We’ve kind of unintentionally got a format formula in place, then we just fill in the gaps. We start off with a song and dance routine, sit down, do a routine at a desk, then we move on and get into the sketches. What we like to do is film all of the sketches in a small theatre. It’s great to do it live - we film the whole thing in half an hour! It’s a lot of fun when we can get the audience involved - they go along with you and the whole thing just comes together effortlessly. I’ve done TV shows, like 8 Out Of 10 Cats and things like that, and they take about three or four hours to film. You’re getting bored, the audience is getting bored - it’s hard work. We like to create an atmosphere where we are as excited as the audience! We’ll write it all, film the sketches, then chuck it all at a small audience and just make sure that they’re having a good time.
RETURNING TO THE NORTH EAST TO SHOWCASE MY ART… Is very exciting to me, as a lot of what I do is inspired by where I come from. My dad worked at The Yorkshire Post in Leeds, so I was born a West Yorkshire man, before moving to Darlington when I was five. I left the North East in 1979, moving to London and then Kent, but it’s a place I’ll always consider home. I’ve been out of the area for a long time now - but I keep thinking ‘I really want to go back and do a proper tour of where I used to hang about’. I love it up here. I don’t get back as much as I should do. I’m hoping to visit the exhibition but, as always, it all depends on babysitting duties! I ENJOY SPENDING TIME UP ON THE NORTH YORK MOORS… But I’ll tell you what I really love… Alnwick - and all of the nearby Northumberland villages.
Now I’m talking to you, I’m selling myself a really good summer holiday. I’m going to make everyone go up to Northumberland for the summer! The school holidays are coming up and I think that’s where we’re going to go. I’m there - I’ve just decided. I’m thinking about it now… I’m not even listening to what you’re saying - I’m thinking about my next holiday up north! NEXT UP ON THE AGENDA IS… Another Big Night Out. Also, ten years ago we started writing something called The Glove - we’re going to be filming that in September. Then I’ve got my show at The Biscuit Factory, I’ve got another show at the Grosvenor Gallery in London, then that’ll do me for the year I think! I’ve got a luxe lifestyle you know, I just work when I want… See you at the exhibition - or I might even bump into you in Alnwick! thebiscuitfactory.com

LUXE LOCKS
The last two months have been non-stop for us. Photo shoots in London, delivering shows and education to salons around the UK and a few international shows thrown in for good measure. We’re recently back from Moscow, where we were invited to put on a show at the Russian Hairdressing Awards. The night was incredible and it was a real honour to be part of such a wonderful event. We created an avant-guard show of 15 models - a tall order to say the least! Completely worth it though, when you see your vision and hard work on the runway in front of thousands of hairdressers. We just love flying the flag for British hairdressing. With summer just around the corner, we thought we’d bring you a little something to get you in the mood. As much as we’d like to, we can’t transport you to a beach or make you a cocktail right now, but what we can do is tempt you with these glam after-beach waves! And an utterly-gorgeous hair colour. Our model is the very beautiful Alisha Cowie, who just so happens to be the current Miss England. She recently swapped her long dark locks for this very on-trend Moroccan-inspired look. And we love it. Jonathan Turner, from Hooker & Young Jesmond, has been looking after Alisha’s hair during her reign as Miss England and created this gorgeous textured bob, which we think looks absolutely stunning. It’s also really versatile; a relaxed, yet sophisticated, style that can be worn looser and more disheveled for daytime and fuller, with more body, in the evening. The beautiful multi-tonal colour was created by Paul Ferguson & Loren Williams from Hooker & Young Ponteland, using a colour palette inspired by a Moroccan sunset over a desert landscape. Smouldering, mysterious and every inch gorgeous, we’re just loving Alisha’s new look for summer 2019. SPA SESSION
GET SNUG
In tranquil Tynemouth, Jessica Laing discovers basement bliss. A hideaway spa that’s as cosy as can be…
WHEREABOUTS I’ve lived in Tynemouth my whole life (I know, lucky me) and I’ve been a spalover since forever. So you can imagine my surprise - and glee - when one of our lovely Luxe columnists (who also happens to live at the coast) tipped me off about a dreamy pamper place on home turf. Turns out, The Snug Spa has been under my nose for quite some time now, but in a bid to keep things as exclusive and as private as possible, its owner, Dianne, has remained
pretty hushed about its idyllic location and kept its stress-busting services on the down-low. For that, I salute her, so all I’ll say is that it’s tucked away in the heart of the village, a stone’s throw away from the waves. You’ll have to open a gate and venture down a few steep steps to reach this little slice of spa heaven, but once you do, boy, do serenity and stillness await you. STYLE A big, chunky Georgian-style door leads you into what is, essentially, a single treatment
room - the ‘snug’. But it’s as cosy as can be, filled with dreamy, Pinterest-worthy features everywhere. There are twinkling lanterns on the floor and there’s a heated bed waiting for me, covered in toasty towels and a huge, soft, faux-fur throw. There’s a beautiful wooden table, standing just a few inches off the floor, at which clients are invited to sit while savouring cups of fresh herbal tea (Dianne likes to make her own tasty infusions). For privacy when changing, there’s a beautiful panel screen, a statement piece on its own, and there’s a flickering wood-burner nearby, too, ensuring things stay warm and toasty while you enjoy your treatment. The walls are dark, almost black, and there’s next to no natural light, but that only adds to the cocooning, soothing atmosphere. WHAT’S ON OFFER Using top-of-the-range Aveda products, Dianne offers a range of body treatments, including full-body massages and hot stone back massages, alongside luxury mani/pedis, Japanese reiki treatments and relaxing facial massage with lovely add-on extras like rose petal face masks. Rather than focusing on delivering immediate physical results (softer lines and wrinkles, less puffiness, smaller pores), Dianne prefers to lead with a holistic approach; creating a safe space in which
34 luxe-magazine.co.uk
clients are free to let go of their troubles, if only for an hour or two. Sometimes gentle meditation features before the massaging begins, other times she’ll work with clients on their breath to try and calm the nervous system. Whichever treatment you decide on, it’s very likely your senses will be soothed, your mind will be quietened and your general sense of wellbeing will be boosted. What’s not to love? You’ll still glow - just on the inside, too. SPA SESSION circle’ events, which focus on wellbeing, meditation and bringing people together. Plans for the near future include a new, deluxe bathroom, featuring a stone shower, and a steam room to make spa treatments extra indulgent. OUR EXPERIENCE I’m handed my own chunky, velvety-soft dressing gown and slippers on arrival, as well as a thoughtful handwritten note from Dianne, welcoming me to The Snug Spa and wishing me a relaxing treatment - a very nice touch indeed. Once cosy in my furry robe, I’m treated to a hot, bubbly foot soak, then it’s on to the bed for my hour of bliss. A hot stone back massage is my treat of choice, promising seven times the tension-releasing power of a typical skinon-skin massage. Using smooth, heated volcanic stones and only a small amount of oil (a very pleasant surprise - most places leave you feeling greasy for days), Dianne’s ability to melt away every ounce of tension in my upper back and shoulders seems effortless. Her rhythmic motions do nothing but lull me into a peaceful slumber and I really appreciate her attempts to knead away the stubborn, often painful, knots around my shoulder blades. She knuckles down quite literally - until I feel release. And it’s wonderful. Then, to top it off, after removing all traces of oil from my back with warm cloths (I loved this part - no sticky clothes), I’m turned over and treated to a bit of soft facial pressure point action, which feels a lot like forehead stroking - the kind you long for after a hard, taxing day. Talk about comforting. I challenge anyone to stay awake the whole way through. Once dressed, I put my slippers back on and take to the sofa for a catch up with Dianne, who pours me a cup of tea from a beautiful stone teapot, along with a glass of fruitinfused water. The tea on offer is a blend of liquorice, clove and other herbs and spices. Delish. VERDICT I feel slightly hesitant about singing The Snug Spa’s praises. Not because it doesn’t deserve it - it absolutely does - but because I feel like I’d be revealing one of my village’s best-kept secrets. I want it to remain a
private, exclusive, hidden gem - that’s all part of its allure, after all. If you do end up visiting (and I really hope that you do), do me a favour and keep it quiet. Sure, tell your chums and family members and, yes, do return again and again for more (I know I will), but perhaps keep the social media shouting to a minimum. Better still, turn your phone off before you even step through the door and allow yourself to just ‘be’ in the moment. It’s the perfect place to do that. Dianne is a dreamy hostess; a calm, gentle and welcoming soul, who makes you feel completely at ease, and at home, as soon as you cross the threshold. After an hour or so in her company, I feel as though I’ve made a new friend and I can’t help feel a little warmer and fuzzier inside when I (reluctantly) leave her blissful basement. To book, contact Dianne on 07921 394 225. Appointments are made by text only. For more information and to keep an eye on offers and updates, follow @thesnugspa on Instagram.
Your senses will be soothed, your mind will be quietened and your general sense of wellbeing will be boosted. You’ll still glow - just on the inside, too

your bridal needs and you’ll leave feeling full of confidence and ready to take to the aisle. From High Definition makeovers and show-stopping up-dos, to wow lashes and pampered pedis, the whole process is as enjoyable as it is exciting. We’re in for the full wedding works - a trial ahead of the big day. A full day of prepping and planning, with piles of magazines to flick through, lots of chit-chat and plenty of treats. Therapists become friends and tea turns to prosecco. A day at At Sisters is a day well spent – and you’ll leave feeling a better, brighter and bride-ready you. When it comes achieving the perfect bridal look, it’s important to combine natural beauty with bold, statement features. And there’s no better way to make a statement than with your lashes. Fluttering, flirtatious feathers will brighten your eyes, enhance your look and will add dazzling dimension to your photographs.
The Nouveau lash extensions process takes some time, but it’s worth every minute. I’m a natural blonde, so my fair hair means barely-there lashes - but it’s nothing my new bridal beauty team can’t fix. With my first cuppa on the go, it’s time for a bit of feet-up pamper time in the new treatment rooms at the back of the salon. We talk holidays and wedding planning as my lashes begin their transformation. In just over an hour, my once-wispy features form layers of luxe lashes. They’re weightless and whimsical, creating a facial focal point - perfect for photographs. You won’t find these lashes
popping off on your pillowcase. They’re strong, long-standing and can last up to eight weeks with maintenance every two to three weeks - meaning your luxe lashes will flutter all the way from the moment you say I do, to the moment you say yes please to a honeymoon cocktail or two. Next up, it’s the colour bar. As L’Oreal colour specialists, the stylists at this chic salon will help you alter the way you look in an exciting and effortless way. For soon-to-be brides, it’s about enhancing your signature style, rather than experimenting with colour, so after discussing my look, skin tone and the all-important dress, we’re underway with

a healthy transformation from dull blonde to glowing, golden locks. Foils are neatly applied and rinsed, before the three-step Olaplex treatment works wonders for broken bonds – a blonde’s best friend! After a wash and head massage, the stylist chops away at any unwanted hair, before a bouncy blow-dry adds dimension, ready for a showstopping up-do. My lovely new locks are curled, layered and pinned in place for the perfect finish. Wraps, plaits and ringlets create the ultimate whimsical wedding look. Throw in some flowers and we’re good to go! A quick dash to the nearest nail bar is my usual routine, but with time to sit back, relax and enjoy the moment, I’m moved into the parlour – a new space at the side of the salon – kitted out with nail bar, blow-dry bar and make-up station. A pampered paradise – and a space that can be hired out for girly gatherings, birthday celebrations and wedding parties. With a glass of fizz in one hand, my dehydrated nails are brought back to life with acrylic extensions. Once constructed and shaped, a pretty peachy colour is
applied and it’s another treatment ticked off the bridal beauty list. With a fresh face of foundation, a flick of the eyelashes, a plump of the lips and a pop of colour on the cheeks, the bridal beauty look is beautifully brought together. Using award-winning High Definition products, At Sisters’ in-house makeup artists have everything to help you achieve that long-lasting weddingday glow. With years of experience in all departments, the talented team will work with you every step of the way – pinning down every piece of detail, from your bouquet to your bridesmaid dresses – to ensure your wedding look flows from head to toe. MUSIC WITH MEANING
Paul Tucker and Tunde Baiyewu are back in the place where it all began. This time, swapping the city’s clubs for a quiet cup of tea ahead of their album launch. Elysia Agnew settles in to get the full-circle story of the Lighthouse Family...
MAY/JUN19
There’s nothing a good cup of tea cannot fix. An 18-year ‘tea break’ calls for more tea, as we sit down with the Lighthouse Family to talk college years, Newcastle’s nightlife and that sunshine music we all know and love. The pair met back in the early 90s while studying in Newcastle. And what a journey it has been. A journey that has led them back to the place where it all began. Somewhere that will forever have a place in the hearts of the people that ‘Lifted’ us way back when. “It’s mad,” says Paul, as he sits back on the couch, ready to talk up the Toon. “It’s kind of strange because for the last ten years it’s been on and off,” he adds. “We’ve been talking about doing it, trying to do it, not doing it… “This time, we actually got approached by our record company. There was a really cool guy called Craig Shardlow - a real music head - he signed Sam Fender and works with The 1975. “His dad was a massive Lighthouse Family fan and he loved it as well because he heard it as a kid. He approached our management and said, ‘Can you get the guys together again? Do you think they can make a new record?’ “And that’s where it started.” It’s all about timing in the music industry. Things may have been tried and tested ten times over, they may have flourished and failed over the years, but it doesn’t mean to say the record is broken. Time will tell. It’s a path that is already written, waiting in the wings for the right moment to send out its signals. This is when the ‘lighthouse’ really comes into its own. A flickering signal, a navigation through strong waters. A leading light, guiding the pair back to Newcastle. “We’d made several attempts to bring it back,” says Tunde. “We’d been up here in Newcastle, working to make new music - and it just kind of faded away and didn’t happen. “So to a certain degree, a lot of the groundwork for what we’ve done was already in place, but it’s still taken us about two years of work to make the record, ensuring it fits the brief of what the Lighthouse Family is all about.” There’s something incredibly special about meeting Paul and Tunde in Newcastle. It’s like catching up with a friend who left home a long time ago. Reminiscing about their favourite hangouts, getting to grips with what’s new in the city, and generally just jumping back into the Newcastle headspace. “The way it’s all happening is really weird. It feels like something else is driving it,” says Paul. “It’s really strange,” adds Tunde. “We’ve been walking around town this afternoon and I walked past where I used to live by the Quayside - just taking it all in again. “There’s something about what is happening now - the record we’ve made and how we’ve made it - that is representative of exactly >>

MUSIC WITH MEANING how it was when we first started. “There’s a lot of attention back on Newcastle at the moment. The place looks and feels so different, but at the same time, it feels just like it did when we formed. “Isn’t it strange that, while all of this is happening and Newcastle is back on the map in the music world, we’ve got a new record?” If Paul and Tunde were ever to reform, it was always going to be in Newcastle. It’s the city where they signed their first deal, it’s the city they played their first demos, and it’s the city that quite simply, lit up the Lighthouse Family. “From a musical point of view, if something works up here, it kind of works anywhere. “Some stuff that works in London doesn’t always work elsewhere. But music that works in Newcastle tends to travel - I don’t know why that is. That seems to have worked for a lot of people. People like Sting and classics like Knopfler, but even now, with people like Sam Fender - it’s quite hot again. There’s a lot of good stuff happening up here. “It was important for us to come back here to do the groundwork for this record.” “Look at it like this - wherever something is conceived or born, somehow in its DNA, it takes on the main characteristics of that place,” Tunde jumps in. “And you can’t shake that off. It’s important not to lose that connection. “Newcastle has its own pull for us,” he adds. “There’s a golden thread that kind of weaves its way through the different aspects of what we do. And that sense of place is so important.” “Well put mate,” Paul cuts in. “I like that - beautifully summed up.” So how was their soulful sound born? Paul had Ocean Drive in the bag and was casting around, looking for a singer to record it with. Through mutual friends, the pair met, worked their magic and it was a very quick journey from there. A journey that they’ve brought back to life with new music. “Wayne’s flat, where we first met, was on Waterloo Street - there’s a track on the new record name after that road,” says Paul. “We based the song on that street because there was a great club called Rockshots. They played really uplifting, feel-good house music that kind of coloured what we were doing at the time. Tommy Caulker was the DJ - he now runs World Headquarters. It’s great to come back and see that he’s still doing his thing in the city - he’s like the Peter Pan
Newcastle has its own pull for us. There’s a golden thread that kind of weaves its way through the different aspects of what we do 40 luxe-magazine.co.uk
of Newcastle’s nightlife scene. “I met my wife at Rockshots too, so Waterloo Street is a bit special for us,” Paul adds. Bringing the Lighthouse Family back is something that has taken a lot of thought. And it was important to get it right - finding the perfect balance between giving the people what they want, while pulling in new fans. A Lighthouse Family song is instantly recognisable. It is wind-the-windows-down, driving-along-the-coast, put-a-smile-on-yourface, sunshine music. It’s memorable and it’s mood-lifting. Whatever the weather, it puts a ‘Blue Sky In Your Head’, which brings us on to the new album… “High, Lifted, Ocean Drive - people know what to expect from a Lighthouse Family song. Tunde’s voice. Feel-good tunes. You know the score,” says Paul. “Matching that for the second time is quite difficult. “The album is called ‘Blue Sky In Your Head’, and the reasoning behind it fits the brief of the original Lighthouse Family songs. Something that puts a bit of bit of sunshine in your head. Ocean Drive does just that. “I think if somebody loves Lighthouse Family, they’re not going to be disappointed.” Just like the band’s title - a nod to Whitley Bay’s St Mary’s Lighthouse - the new album found its name in the North East. “Newcastle is a fundamental part of what we do,” explains Paul. “Our studio is in Newcastle. Our ideas are born in Newcastle. For us, it’s one of the best places in the country, but for some reason, everybody always wants to get out. “Actually, the ‘Blue Sky In Your Head’ idea came about when we were looking out of the studio window, starring at a blank page for five days. “I was sat there thinking, ‘I don’t want to be here, I want to be somewhere else’. But actually, this is the place where things happen. A creative space in which we can flourish. “So I think the album title is a reflection of the need to escape, the want to get away - to chase the ‘blue sky in your head’. But I guess the real questions is, do you really need to escape to get that ‘blue sky’ feeling? “For us, we escaped, returned, and that blue sky is bluer than it has ever been before.” Lighthouse Family music means something different to everyone - whether it’s an overwhelming feeling of love, a piece of music that carries you through tough times, or a song that triggers that ‘let’s get out of here’ feeling. “I think it’s exactly what we need right now,” says Paul. “What a mess - you don’t even want to look at the television anymore. You don’t want to look at the news. Everyone is disconnecting. “When we first started it was all about creating beautiful, uplifting, happy house music. The Cold War had finished and it just suddenly felt like everyone had come to their senses - millennium and all of that. It went bonkers! “That’s what we’d like to bring. I think we all deserve it.” For Paul and Tunde, now is the time in the music-making cycle for them to sit back, relax and take it all in. The creative side of the jigsaw is complete - next comes the promo, the live performances and most of all, enjoying their achievements. It’s very much a similar cycle in the magazine-making industry. Blank pages become ideas, ideas become words, words become stories, and stories are then shared for enjoyment. Our worlds collide… “When it comes to the creative side, there’s always the daunting aspect of facing the
blank page,” explains Tunde. “You probably get the exact same thing in writing. We know we can write songs. We can sit in front of the piano and come up with new music. But there’s more to it than that… “You’ve done it in the past, but when you’re presented with the opportunity again, it’s almost like each time you start, you’ve never actually done it before. And so, when you get that breakthrough, it’s new it’s a surprise. “It’s a different thing when you’re playing live. I mean, it has got it’s own surprise elements because you’re meeting new people, but a certain part of it is already done. It’s a chance for us to enjoy it.” “When we first started doing this, we didn’t anticipate that it would be as successful as it was,” adds Paul. “We just wanted to make records and sell enough copies to carry on making music and doing this as a life. “And then it just took off, before we had the chance to take it all in. There’s no road map for this stuff. So this time, now we’re here, we just want to ease the pressure and enjoy it.” Whatever the Lighthouse Family means to you, whether it takes you on a musical journey, marks a special memory or just puts a smile on your face, there’s no escaping that sunshine feeling. Uplifting, road trip hits that will live on forever. “I love hearing stories about what our songs mean to people,” says Paul. “There’s a song called Live Again on this record and its message is very relevant today. It reminds us that ‘it’ll be alright we will live again’. “High has a similar message, a strong connection.” A personal favourite of mine. And one that triggers that sunshine feeling time and time again. Pending wedding song... “Oh really?” says Paul. “That’s amazing. What a lovely thing to hear. It was such a difficult song to write,” he adds. “I had it for such a long time. I’ve never told anyone this, but I remember I just wrote that line, ‘one day we’re gonna get so high’. “I was struggling with it for the whole year. But that’s all I had - that line. It was total ‘blank sheet fever’ for about six months. I knew it had to be a big tune. “Eventually, we’d recorded everything and it just had to be done - the night before we
completed the album. So I just wrote down what I was thinking… ‘when you’re close to tears remember, one day it’ll all be over…’ It was just what I was feeling at the time. “So it’s so fulfilling to hear that it’s a song that means so much to other people. I’m filling up now...” “It’s a very spiritual thing,” Tunde adds. “Sometimes our spiritual knowledge takes over our logical headspace. It’s not something concrete, but it’s something we know to be true. And the difficult thing is trying to materialise that in the form of words and music. “Sometimes the idea is much bigger than the container you’re trying to put it in, and you’ve got to try and condense it - that’s the hardest part. “You condense it and you’re just not happy with it - you chuck it out, empty the glass and start again. But you’ve just got to allow it to ring true - to say what it wants to say, and it’ll all come together in the end.” What is so uplifting about the Lighthouse Family’s music is that it rings true for so many people. Whether it sparks happy memories or leaves you with a ‘Blue Sky In Your Head’, it’s no surprise to me to see big smiles, bubbly personalities and the best of friends behind the much-loved sunshine music. “The thing about me and him,” Paul starts. “At the beginning of it all, when we first met, Tunde really got into what Ocean Drive was all about and it was just effortless in the studio. But at the same time, we’ve both walked away, for a long, long time. There was no big bust up, we’re both just quite passive people. “We look back now and we both think… we should’ve done this ages ago!” Together they’ve navigated through those rough waters and the light is leading them back to where it all began. Back to Newcastle City Hall this November, where you can see the guys perform live, in the place they call ‘home’. “And that is that,” says Tunde. “When you’re passionate about things, things happen. You’ve just got to remember where it all came from and hold on to it. It’s in the DNA.” “Wow, what a lovely tea break,” adds Paul. But their 18-year ‘tea break’ is over. Finding Space
Take the time to smell the roses… Our garden at home was filled with roses when I was young and the memory of them is lodged deep within me. One day, aged six or seven, playing and somewhat distracted, I fell in to a thorny bush right next to our front door and had to peel myself out – quickly, yet carefully enough, to not get too hurt. On reflection, this was useful preparation for adult life and has become a metaphor for much of mine! What I remember most, though, about that time and that garden is the overwhelmingly beautiful scent that filled the air when the flowers were in bloom and the ‘perfume’ we used to make when they were shedding their petals. Today, on a break from work, I took a walk to the river and there it was again – the aroma of beautiful roses, which have just begun to flower in this part of the world. It hit me like a wave – suddenly I was small again. Happy memories of my childhood came flooding back: long days, paddling pools, bird’s nests, bicycles, grandparents. It’s true that smell, memory and emotion are powerfully linked; I feel spacious and connected as I write this. In the Northern Hemisphere we are in mid-spring; the season of blossom, cut grass, chirping chicks, unpredictable weather and lengthening days. Every trip outside delivers a bounty of fragrance, beauty, colour and noise. Astrologically, we are transiting Taurus season – the sign of the zodiac that rules he physical senses: sight, smell, sound, taste and touch. This season of the senses is a time where we can use our body and its many gifts to ground into ourselves, find more space inside and connect with what’s important. So, as you go about your business over the next few weeks and beyond, I invite you to let your senses awaken, for there are many lessons we can take from our connection to the material and physical world – particularly at this time. If you wish, you can consider these gentle prompts as a place to start: • What smells do you tune in to and what memories do these scents trigger? • How do the noises of nature help you awaken? • What do you hear first? • How tuned in are you to your sense of touch? • How do you notice the changing of the light? • How does the food of the season make you feel? Enjoy spring - and all she brings. Take care for now, Laura

Generation We’re talking to people with a positive attitude to mid-life, doing things differently, changing their pace of life, their priorities, reflecting on what’s gone before and the new opportunities and challenges to come John Nelson, 65, from Hutton Rudby, is very much riding the new business journey. He’s the brains behind The Rusty Bike, a cool cycle cafe at the foot of the North York Moors. Inspired by the sustainable surf cafes of Cali and Canada, John and his two grown-up kids, Jen and Rob, have worked as a team to grow the business from a garage to a country gem. An engineer in the motor trade for much of his life, John found his beloved bike rusting away in the garage. So what did he do? Put his wheels in motion, found a derelict garage in nearby Swainby, and opened a quirky countryside cycle cafe. With his outdoorsy spirit, a can-do attitude and a way with DIY, a beauty of a business was born. Elysia Agnew checks in for a catch up over coffee…
I used to do this...
For the last 35 years I worked in the motor trade, servicing and repairing cars for a very loyal customer base. I like to think my car repair business was as much about the cars as it was about looking after the customers.
Now life is about… New challenges, adventures - and great coffee and cake!
Why and how I made a change… I was on holiday in Canada visiting my son Rob - who was working there at the time. We spent every day mountain biking in the Rockies, and at the end of the day we would roll back into Whistler, where we would relax in some very quirky coffee shops with cyclingrelated activities. We sat there, took it all in and were inspired by the lifestyle that together, cycling and cafes created. So as the scary thought of a bus pass lingered, which was definitely not for me, creating a new business which could include my cycling interests seemed to be the way forward. By good fortune, or good luck, the old garage in Swainby was for sale, and its location on the edge of the stunning North York Moors was perfect. So we set

off on our journey to convert the building into The Rusty Bike. At first, the plan was to just open weekends, hiring and servicing bikes - and serving coffee while people waited. But it soon became a seven-day-a-week operation. The cycle hire side of the business attracts people visiting from as far away as Australia and Canada, while our coffee shop and gallery has become a hub for local people. It’s a great mix.
Lap up the sunshine with these summer wardrobe essentials...
I’m lucky I can…
Run a business I’m extremely passionate about, thanks to the help and support from friends and family. A very good friend of mine, Jane Kitching, made a huge input into the creation of the cafe and gave us the inspiration for the look and feel of the place. Jane’s artwork, which is displayed in the galley, is now part of the fabric of The Rusty Bike.
A day in the life of me… Every day is different. Some days start by making the famous Rusty Bike soup, chatting to customers about cycling and introducing them to the world of electric bikes. When time allows, you’ll find me out riding my bikes to prepare for cycle events and mountain bike races. Some days are spent maintaining and repairing various interesting classic cars and motorbikes for friends. When the sun is shining, I will be on my mountain bike, getting lost in the glorious North York Moors. My cycling friends and customers have further supported the business by wearing Rusty Bike cycle tops on their journeys across the globe, giving me my new name ‘Mr Rusty’.
The people who are important to me… My children Jen and Rob. I am also fortunate to have some great friends who have helped and supported me over the years, and I have enjoyed many adventures with all of them.
Work/life balance…
Working for yourself in a business where you meet new and interesting people every day, work quickly becomes an enjoyable part of daily life.
I thrive on...
The need to be doing something creative or constructive and not wasting time - trying to get as much as I can from life. What makes me tick most is getting to grips with new projects, like finally having the time to renovate my house, the buzz when the cafe is busy, and taking time out to listen to customers’ stories and adventures.
I’ve got time for… Now I’m not working in the garage, I have more time for cycling again - plus working on and riding my vintage motorbikes. My bike is no longer ‘rusty’ and I’m back to it, planning new adventures every day.
Things are different because… In my previous business my work pattern was pretty structured. But now, I have so many projects linked to The Rusty Bike on the horizon: such as leading educational cycle tours, both at home in North Yorkshire and overseas in places I’ve been lucky enough to explore.

XXXXXXXX LITTLE LUXE
HELLO!
Though I hate to say (or write) it, this time it’s hello and goodbye... After almost a decade as your smallest Luxe correspondent, I’m retiring. I’m getting ready to start secondary school in September, so I think the time has come to hand the baton over to the next generation of baby writers! It’s been a privilege to write for you as Little Luxe, reviewing fun family things to do, gorgeous gear for little ones and recommended

I felt quite nostalgic looking back at the very first issue of Luxe, I was just a baby then, and the back catalogue of magazines charts my whole life! Thank you so much for reading. I’ll enjoy being on the other side of the Luxe pages now... Love Nina x

Pawfect days
Wanderlust awaits
And just like that, summer rolls back around. Time to get out in the garden, make a beeline for the beach and catch up with the whole family during a canine-friendly country escape. In preparation for the sunshine months, Alfie has been sniffing out some superb staycation spots - namely the North Lakes Hotel & Spa in Cumbria. A memorable escape where muddy paws meet mouthwatering meals. Hound heaven. What’s a holiday without a poochy suitcase packed with new goodies? Check out Mungo & Maud’s new summer-inspired collection below. All of that - and a chat with a super suave Harvey Specter-like pup. Plenty to wag our tails at. An escape to a place where wanderlust awaits. When we say ‘wanderlust’, we don’t just mean sitting on a beach, cocktail in hand, sand between the toes. We’ve found wanderlust with the woof-factor. A pampered poochy stay in the Lake District is the perfect way to celebrate National Walking Month this May. Alfie checks in for a weekend of walks and tail-wags at the North Lakes Hotel & Spa, near Penrith. XXXXXXXX TOP TRAINING
ON THE HOOF with Deborah Smith When the clocks move forward and British Summer Time arrives, I’m always keen to put some horse racing dates in the diary...
As much as I love going to winter race fixtures - wrapped up warm with a piping hot flask of coffee in hand - May and June are when I’m most likely to have a day out with friends at one of the many brilliant northern racecourses. Hexham is my ‘local’, so that’s the odds-on favourite for a visit, but Newcastle, Catterick, Thirsk and York are all within an easy drive and Ayr and Musselburgh just a stretch further. With so many top jockeys and trainers having northern roots, it’s not surprising that Highclere Thoroughbred Racing has now launched a dedicated Northern Division. Initially comprised of three syndicates, the Northern Division reflects the wealth of horse racing talent in the North of England and is run by Jason Fildes, who has joined Highclere’s management team following four years as General Manager of Haydock Park Racecourse. Jason brings with him an in-depth knowledge of racing along with over 25 years’ business management experience in Lancashire (Jason founded
Barden Mill, now Pendle Village Mill, in 1993). The three syndicates under Jason’s management are named after celebrated northern artists - George Stubbs Syndicate, David Hockney Syndicate and Antony Gormley Syndicate – and will be placed under the stewardship of three hugely successful trainers. Mark Johnston, Britain’s most victorious trainer of all time, fellow Yorkshire-based trainer and multiple Group 1 winner, Richard Fahey, and Tom Dascombe, who also trains for ex-footballer and England star, Michael Owen. The beauty of Highclere is that it is a syndicate that wins with horses that are, by any measure, up there with the best. Their formula is simple: buy top class horses, train them well, ride them well and look after your owners. So if you’ve been bitten by the racing bug and quite fancy the idea of being an owner, then Highclere is a superb way to experience racing at the highest level. For more information contact: enquiries@highclere.co.uk highclereracing.co.uk
WHAT’S NEW? >> Another new arrival in the North East is the fabulous indoor arena at Marwood Equestrian Centre, based in the beautiful surroundings of the Pennines, near Barnard Castle. Marwood is owned and managed by Sarah Tubbs, who is a hugely popular and well-regarded British Showjumping Coach. I’ve trained with Sarah for a couple of years now and it has made such a difference to be able to train indoors during the winter months. The new arena was part-funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development through the Rural Payments Agency, and is a stunning construction designed by Graham Heath Equestrian Structures. Now I just need to make all of that winter training translate into lots of big bright rosettes! If you want to book a session with Sarah, please contact her on: 07886 485201
SUMMER FITNESS ESSENTIAL >> I wouldn’t be without the support I get from County Durham Equine Massage and Clair Woff. Oli and Strider both get regular massages from Clair - they love it and it really helps to keep them fit and supple. I asked Clair how she first got into her work… “I was a competition groom for 12 years, and became fascinated with biomechanics. Then I worked at the Yorkshire Equine Clinic, rehabilitating horses post-op and injury. I wanted to be able to have a bigger impact than just focusing on the horses’ back/spine, so I trained in human sports massage and then equine, which covers the whole horse.” What do you love about your job? “I love having a positive impact on horses and their owners’ lives.” Anything you hate? “Petrol station sandwiches! I’m always out on the road.” And your three top tips for keeping your horse in tip-top condition? “There’s no substitute for a good warm up/down, appropriate diet, and lots of kindness.” Clair can be contacted on: 07795 363627

INDIAN XXXXXXXX ESCAPE
REST & RELAX
Hip hotels with Debrah Dhugga
Debrah ticks something very special off her bucket list and shares the experience...
ANANDA IN THE HIMALAYAS >> This is a resort I have always wanted to visit and as I was heading to India I made it happen. Yes, this is luxury, indulgence and wellbeing at its finest. Just what I needed. It’s not cheap but I promise, it is worth every single penny and definitely worth saving for! It was one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Don’t worry about packing your makeup and fancy clothes. On arrival you are given a pair of white KJs (white PJs) and you wear these throughout the stay, replacing them as many times as you like during the day. These are worn from breakfast to bedtime. As I said, this place is all about wellbeing, not glamour or dressing up. Ananda is not a new hotel; it opened its doors in 2001 and has since received numerous awards and worldwide recognition. It remains at the forefront of innovation in health and wellness and strives to constantly improve. Perched on the side of a hill that slopes down to the valley, flanked by natural forest on one side and the exquisite Spa building on the other, this is the ultimate in relaxation. Sip a fresh juice by the pool under clear Himalayan skies, enjoy a snack of garden-fresh vegetables and organic greens. Does it get any better? The weather was not kind to me - thunder storms and rain - but it really didn’t matter. In fact it felt very tranquil. FOOD >> Ananda’s healthy cuisine incorporates key principles from Ayurveda, which takes into consideration not just taste, but body type. Think fresh natural foods, low in fat and calories using wholegrains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and low-fat dairy products. You get a body type (dosha) assessment with a food served accordingly. I was diagnosed as ‘pitta’ and for certain dietary
restrictions like gluten-free, nut-free, dairy-free etc. You are recommended to stick to the programme during your stay and the chef cooks you individual meals to support this. You rarely see anyone drinking any alcohol, but it is available if you wish. A beautiful healthy afternoon tea is offered every day to all guests in the Palace. YOGA >> The Yoga Programme at Ananda is as good as it gets, aimed at helping you cultivate yogic practices to recharge yourself. Every aspect of your mind, body and soul achieves a heightened sense of balance though yoga and comprehensive programmes of seven and 14 nights are available. As my stay was brief, I had a three-day programme which included a private yoga session with Sammy (head of yoga for the resort) and meditation lesson, as well as a spiritual session. They have special speakers as guests to the resort and Depak Chopra was in-house during my stay. A GREAT WAY TO START THE MORNING >> Mornings start with a fresh juice served in the spa lounge, which is followed by a stroll along the trail with a guide, enjoying the beauty and tranquility of nature. It takes about three hours and is so calming. At a certain point we had the opportunity to be guided to a deep meditative experience. The walk ended with a ginger/lemon tea and a relaxed soak in the pool and a sauna. NIGHTTIME >> You can spend an evening in the town of Rishikesh and watch the evening Aarti performed every evening on the banks of the river Ganga. The hotel offers a return to and from Ananda by car. THE SPA >> With 24 treatment rooms, state-of-the-art gym, outdoor temperature-controlled swimming pool and luxurious hydrotherapy facilities, this is the heartbeat of Ananda. The spa features more than 80 body and
beauty experiences, blending traditional Indian wellness practices of Ayurveda and Yoga with the best of international wellness experiences. The claim being the best destination spa in India certainly holds true. Whatever you’re looking for, I can’t think of a better retreat, in the true sense of the word, than this Himalayan spa and wellness retreat. I enjoyed a full-body salt scrub, followed by a hot steam and, the next day, a beautiful Ila massage. SLEEP WELL >> Ananda’s 78 rooms, suites and villas blend seamlessly with the lush surrounding landscapes. My room was overlooking the valley. One morning I woke up to find we were above the clouds - all I could see were big fluffy clouds, it was surreal. The rooms are so serene and in tune with their surroundings that it’s impossible not to feel completely rested. Each room is a haven with luxurious beds and bathrooms, gorgeous landscaped gardens or valley views and private balconies with picture perfect views. One afternoon I headed back to my room for an afternoon nap, only to find a monkey sitting on my balcony! Oh, and I don’t know if I will spoil a surprise here, but a little touch I enjoyed was a hot water bottle placed in your bed with a mantra every evening. Now that’s what I call luxury!

TOP TURNBERRY
When tartan met Vegas
Unsurprisingly, Trump Turnberry is all about the bling as Kathryn Armstrong discovered at the gilt-edged hotel on Scotland’s west coast... Trump Turnberry was never going to be a subtle weekend destination. The exuberant hotel on Scotland’s west coast was in the eye of the world’s press when its owner, President Trump, stopped over last year – remember the paragliding protestor? But we found zero protest at this Ayrshire enclave of luxury on a recent stayover. Instead, it was crowded with leisure loversaccents mostly Scottish not Stateside basking in opulent surroundings and making the most of everything from perfectly groomed golf courses to decadent afternoon teas. Trump bought the revered hotel, famous for its golf heritage thanks to stunning, if challenging, courses which hug the windswept coastline, and set about transforming it into a luxurious pleasure palace. No expense was spared. There are nearly 200 super-sparkly chandeliers lining corridors which twinkle over opulent deep blue and gold carpet. Every so often you can take some respite on carved wooden thrones or just stop and admire the impressive archive of photographs of the great and good – sportsmen, politicians, rock stars and royalty – who have stayed in its hallowed halls. Bedrooms are decorated in deep blues with opulent bed canopies in Trump tartan with
gilt trims. Of course they are! Bathrooms are huge, bright and sparkly – even the toiletries are Natra Bisse’s Diamond range. Family groups of all ages will find something to enjoy. There are loads of activities – from playrooms for the little ones to outdoor adventures for thrill-seekers such as 4x4 driving and junior quad bikes. Stay in the sweet-looking newly refurbished cottages which surround the hotel. They look on-point with their coastal décor white-shuttered bay windows, grey-blue paint colours and wooden floors. They sleep up to six and have a kitchen and dining area in the open plan space, as well as offering all the hotel’s amenities to guests. Dog friendly too. The white-painted hotel itself makes the most of views across the golf courses towards the coast and farther out to the Isle of Arran and the Kintyre peninsula beyond. Standing proud in the ocean is the majestic blue granite island of Ailsa Craig, an ancient and impressive landmark. At 6pm the kilted piper makes his way along the front of the hotel doing his thing. The hotel’s design really makes the most of the views which take centre stage in the dining, lounge and bar areas. We got lucky with dazzlingly good March weather which meant stunning, memorable sunsets across the still waters. Naturally, the golfing is big news here with two championship courses. We didn’t play
Trump Turnberry was never going to be a subtle weekend destination. The exuberant hotel on Scotland’s west coast was in the eye of the world’s press when its owner, President Trump, stopped over last year
but went on a meandering walk from the hotel, along the coastline and beach to the Turnberry Lighthouse. Impressively renovated, this landmark building acts as a halfway house for hungry and thirsty golfers as they tackle the fairways. Or honeymooners can book the lighthouse suite for the night. The coastal location of the courses makes for a gusty game for sure – even on the brightest of days it made for challenging walking terrain, never mind confronting the holes. But the views easily make up for it all. The building has a glass front which again makes the most of the impressive views. Rest up in a deliciously fragrant sauna or take to a lounger and luxuriate in the instantly restful views of the ocean outside. In fact, the quality of staff really shines out here. There’s that super-pleasing helpfulness characteristic of hotels in the States brought to you with a gentle Scottish accent. Willingness to help, friendliness and plenty of confidence and knowledge. Food in the 1906, (when the hotel first opened), restaurant with its ocean views, caters for the traditional with fish from nearby Troon and Scottish beef mainstays
of the menu. Quality was impeccable. We feasted on Kilbrannan scallops with foie gras and grated cauliflower as well as main courses of aged beef Rossini (more foie gras) and pan-seared Gigha halibut with brown shrimp, clams, oyster and white wine veloute. There’s the theatre of the carving trolley which offered Chateaubriand, cote de boeuf or rack of lamb for two, impeccably prepared by chef at table. We went for the dessert version of the drama with a delicious flame-frenzied crepe suzette prepared at table. Breakfast brings a similarly fulsome offering – there’s a Bloody Mary station to prep your own – with artisan vodka waiting to perk you up. Partner it with porridge, haggis or the delicious beetroot-cured salmon, which was one of the many treats on the breakfast buffet selection. turnberry.co.uk
Top Turnberry trips Culzean Castle A short but lovely drive from Trump Turnberry this is about as impressive as a coastal castle can be. The Country Park has picturesque gardens, a visitor centre and restaurant. A boat trip to Arran Known as Scotland in Miniature. Go by car and then take the ferry from Ardrossan Harbor. Visit the distillery, taste the local beer and admire the standing stones of Machrie Moor. INDULGENT ESCAPE
Look at me now
One of Yorkshire’s most historic houses is being revived and reborn as a hotel and spa with grand ambitions. Luxe takes a look...
Grantley Hall is a grand design and then some. Its long, sweeping drive ramps up the anticipation, twisting and turning through some of Yorkshire’s most tantalising parkland. Draw up to the entrance of this 18th century mansion and take a breath. This summer it will be fully open for business, but for now it is alive with industry, as the delicate finishing touches are being added to everything from plasterwork to pillows. Grantley Hall is going to make a statement. Yes, for its imposing beauty and notable Grade II-listed heritage, but also for its vision of the new. At the rear of the hotel the striking Three Graces Spa has been constructed, with a spectacular glass-roofed mezzanine courtyard offering an impressive statement of intent. Some 26 bedrooms (of 47 in total in the hotel), will be arranged around the
50 luxe-magazine.co.uk
courtyard. This is where guests can get up close to the 18m pool, snow and steam rooms and state-of-the-art gym, with specialist equipment such as an altitude training facility, cryotherapy chamber and wellness-testing and allergy centre. The project itself is an ambitious one, headed up by its owner, 75-year-old Valeria Sykes who bought the property three years ago. Her son Richard and partner Colin Little are heavily involved with the project as are Valeria’s grandsons. She sees it a family project and also one that will act as a legacy for this part of Yorkshire, creating jobs as well as a landmark hotel. It is the county’s only Relais and Chateau group member. Grantley Hall is just a mile or so past Fountains Abbey near Ripon, a ten-minute drive from the A1. Its recent past included time as a councilrun education centre and though it came into private ownership for a while, it was left unloved and decaying until Valeria
stepped in with a £70m rescue plan, deciding it would be a good place for afternoon tea. It certainly will. But the intention is also to offer a variety of dining options to encourage visitors and offer guests a choice of food styles. Shaun Rankin heads up the kitchen with his eponymous fine dining restaurant and there will also be a Pan-Asian restaurant. A relaxed all-day dining restaurant, The Drawing Room, will serve quintessential British afternoon tea and the spa lounge will offer nutritious light meals and snacks. Valeria’s will be the destination for cocktails, champagne and music. No expense has been spared in the restoration of the building, which was built by Thomas Norton and his son Fletcher Norton, first Baron Grantley, in the 17th century, based on a Palladian design by English architect Isaac Ware. Over the years, the property became firmly established on the British country
retreat scene, welcoming high profile guests including Queen Mary and the Princess Royal, prominent international businessmen, politicians and society families. Standout facilities will include a contemporary and well-equipped wedding and banqueting suite close to the English-heritage listed Japanese garden, which is currently undergoing extensive restoration. The hotel still has 47 original fireplaces and bedrooms have been creatively designed to make the most of the building’s grand heritage – whilst also paying attention to pampering and the latest smart technologies and room comforts – such as pillow menus, hidden TVs and ultra-luxurious bathrooms. General Manager, Andrew McPherson, will oversee the hotel launch, joining Grantley from Lucknam Park in the Cotswolds. Grantley Hall has launched the pioneering Grantley Academy, an accredited learning and development facility for employees, with dedicated learning zones, located in the East Lodge. State-of-the-art staff accommodation will be available in the new Courtyard Building featuring 49 ensuite bedrooms, several kitchens, informal lounge areas, cinema room and a fully-equipped gymnasium with fitness classes including yoga and mindfulness planned. *Room rates will start from £350 a night up to £5,000 for the striking Presidential Suite. grantleyhall.co.uk

LUXE LIFE
A L E X WA L K E R 39-year-old Alex Walker (left), from Durham, is one half of Scream for Pizza - one of the North East’s most popular street food names, famed for its wood-fired pizzas. After quitting her job as a cruise ship compere and cabaret performer, she joined forces with best friend, Victoria Featherby, on a quest to set up their own business and, in 2014, Scream for Pizza was born. Today, the friends serve up authentic, Neapolitan-style pizzas, which they learned how to make at one of Napoli’s most celebrated pizzerias, La Notizia. They serve from their mobile pizza van - a former 1970s French army ambulance, affectionally known as ‘Goldie’. This spring/summer will see the duo open their first restaurant on Starbeck Avenue in Sandyford, Newcastle. LUXE PEOPLE >> My business partner and dearest friend, Victoria. We spend so much time together and haven’t killed each other yet, which often feels like quite an achievement considering we work in a tiny space

together every day. And my parents, who have always been supportive of my sometimes elusive life choices. LUXE PLACES >> For a weekend > We trained in Naples and I have been dreaming of going back again. Mainly to eat more pizza, but also to spend a bit more time on the Amalfi Coast, which is a heartbreakingly-beautiful part of the world. A long weekend > An extended road trip of the USA, with Vicky, culminating in attending Vegas’ famous pizza expo. America is such a culturally-diverse country, making it very interesting from a culinary perspective. Oh and did I mention its pizza scene?! LUXE RELAX >> Favourite food > That’s obvious! Pizza, of course. And great tapas. Can I have two? Best restaurant > Robertas in Brooklyn. At home, you can’t beat Crab & Lobster. Perfect weekend > Time spent somewhere remote with a hot tub and a BBQ. Downtime means > I like to write, so I’d
probably say being home alone with my laptop and a cafetière of freshlybrewed coffee. Best telly > Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, on Food Network, is a guilty pleasure of mine. I secretly covet Guy Fieri’s life on the road! Best book > The Road Less Travelled by M. Scott Peck. Best sounds > The drama of waves splashing against rocks and Ella Fitzgerald’s voice! LUXE SHOP >> Best shopping city > I worked in Nagoya, Japan, back in 2011 and shopping for clothes there was something else. Let’s just say all styles are catered for. Favourite shop > At home, it has to be Fenwick. Especially the Food Hall - I spend a lot of time in there! Luxe retail treat > I’d prefer to treat myself to a massage at Body and Mind Massage in Newcastle. Their treatments are excellent and, as our work is very physical, I like to go there to melt away any aches and wpains!
LUXE PARTY >> Perfect party > A New Year’s Eve party at Fox Studios in Sydney, with one of my best mates, Nat. It was the only time I’ve managed to stay up all night long, ’til 8am. I couldn’t do that now! Best dress > I don’t like to fuss over fashion choices these days, so it’d be something simple, like a black dress or even jeans. Dinner date > Oprah Winfrey - she’s an icon an inspirational woman. Or Francis Malmann, the celebrated Argentinian chef. Is their enough space at the table for three? YOUR LUXE THINGS IN LIFE >> Great food and wine, to nourish the body and soul. Regular travel, because it’s true what they say - it expands the mind. And my close friends and family, because life is better when shared. Find the pizza pals at various North East food festivals and at The Free Trade Inn, Ouseburn, most Wednesday nights. GARDEN GLORY
Savouring the seasons WITH KAREN PHILLIPS Michele Riveroll. Michele has created scents for many well-known household products and we are very fortunate to have her opening up the olfactory world to us; as she told us: ‘there are fewer perfumers in the world (20 in total) than astronauts’! After a morning rediscovering our sense of smell, and realising that taste is mostly determined by smell, we had a chance to sniff over fifty different scents and unanimously decided that sperm whale vomit, Ambergris, is one of the most delicious, reminiscent of the sea. Ambergris looks like a rock and washes up on beaches; in 2013 a dog in Morecambe, Lancashire wouldn’t leave one rock alone, netting £100,000 for its lucky owner! Our second perfume course encompasses perfume and aromatherapy, and enables people to create and name their own personal fragrance to take away at the end of the day.
RICH PICKINGS FROM THE GARDEN >> It makes me salivate when harvesting the first pea tips from the sugar snap peas, sown under cover. Wild garlic will be harvested down by the river or gathered on a nearby walk, and the young nettle tips will be picked with rubber gloves and then blanched briefly, before being frozen in ice cube trays to use throughout the year in nettle tip and parmesan scones. Early summer always brings a welcome dilemma: should the first tips of asparagus be dipped in a soft-boiled duck egg or simply smothered in creamy hollandaise sauce?
JOBS IN THE GARDEN >>
Noseworthy narcissi, heady hyacinths and a tantalising array of tulips grace the gardens at Linnels Farm. May and June are the best months for quintessential English gardens so get relaxing in your own, or plan day trips to some of the best open gardens in the region... We have always concentrated on scented plants in the gardens here: the citrus scent of witch hazel on cold but bright January days, the overpowering perfume of Daphnes in May, and the pepper-scented rose buds of Rose ‘Chapeau de Napoleon’ to name but a few. When we choose which spring bulbs to import scent is a key consideration; certain narcissi (daffodils) are reminiscent of ‘tom cat pee’ – not quite the perfume you want to linger over the dining table! But others have magical perfumes: the spicy scent of Narcissus ‘Sir Winston Churchill’ will stop you in your tracks as you walk by the pot in the courtyard; aptly named ‘Bridal Crown’ with its delicate, clotted cream rosettes; purest white Hyacinth ‘Aiolos’ fills an old wine box and greets us by the front door; a dainty pot of ‘Erlicheer’ graces the downstairs loo; and Narcissus ‘Geranium’ with its brightly coloured eye and 3-5 flowers per stem is a must, naturalising around the septic tank. The tulips start to flower in late March, reaching a crescendo in early May, providing two months of colour in the garden, and vase after vase of cut flowers for the house. Shapes range from double peony flowers to single flowers opening to the size of dinner

plates on sunny days, to the pure elegance of long-stemmed lily flowered beauties and the weird and wonderfully shaped parrots with their wavy edges. Some tulip varieties are divas commanding centre stage whilst others are happy to provide the supporting act. Mid-May brings the second instalment of our Perfume Course run by International Perfumer
Sow, sow, sow: all that bare ground needs to be covered by crops, otherwise weeds will rule the roost. Don’t forget to succession sow, it is all too easy to sow all your seeds and then never think about it again until they are all eaten. A good rule of thumb for salads and quick crops, like turnips, is sow another row as soon as the first one can be seen coming up, this usually works out about three weeks apart. The other golden rule is water, in early morning or after dusk, during hot spells. The main limiting factor on crop yield is water but, if that need is met, the next limiting factor is nitrogen, so an application of pelleted chicken manure on the bare soil around leafy crops (do not let it touch the crop leaves) will guarantee a good harvest.

FRENCH FANCY
CHEF’S TABLE with James Close, two Michelin star chef at Raby Hunt Caught in a frenzy of fizz in the Champagne countryside…
Whatever Brexit brings, we can’t recommend a trip to France for a tasting tour of the champagne region highly enough. We headed to the city of Reims to meet up with the team at Champagne Deutz, supplier of our house champagne. It’s a lesser known brand in the UK but the French love the stuff and drink it enthusiastically! Take the Eurostar – set off in the morning and be there by teatime, so easy. Take some champagne to drink along the way. The city of Reims is a stunning place with a grand cathedral, town hall and impressive square – perfect for people-watching and wine-drinking. It is also the powerhouse of the Champagne region and a great place to explore. There are entire avenues of suppliers to discover – and taste – as well as many, many opportunities to visit ‘les caves’ to see the processes of champagne-making from some of the best-known names. The wine cellars are really atmospheric places; often you can explore caves which have been there for centuries, filled with dusty bottles – yet set against some of the newest technology in terms of wine-making and storage. We visited the Deutz caves with Monsieur Lallier who is a direct descendent of William
Deutz who set up the vineyard in 1838. The producer makes around 2.5 million bottles a year which is relatively small – they have the same values of quality as we do at Raby Hunt, which is why we like working with them and we will soon have their full range on the wine list. We had a perfect lunch at the chateau with paired champagnes and went to visit the vineyards themselves. The pick of the range is the rich Cuvee William Deutz 2000, a champagne with such finesse – they really look after the grapes to ensure quality. This is an incredibly delicious wine. The nose is very brioche and long ageing of lees brings a sensation touch. Loads of flavour, complexity and structure. A very opulent drink. In Reims we went to the two star Le Parc Les Crayères in a beautiful building set in lovely grounds in the heart of the town. Chef Philippe Mille is a talented guy with menus featuring premium French produce such as lobster, langoustine, foie gras and turbot. A matchless 750 different champagnes on the wine list! Classic dishes beautifully executed, such as taglini with truffle and parmesan, suckling lamb with beets and a mind-blowing lemon soufflé. We drank a Domaine Jamet Cote Rotie 2007 alongside the lamb – superb.
MEET HESTON >> We felt it was time Heston got in on the Luxe action as the Raby Hunt’s honorary hound. Need to know? He’s a soft-coated Wheaten Terrier. Very naughty, selfish and spoilt. Just a baby at 18 months old – so we forgive him. Gourmet pooch? He gets to eat restaurant leftovers – sometimes as posh as waygu beef or aged tuna. His favourite food is chicken – in fact, he thinks chicken is his name – when we say the word he comes running. We called him Heston because it’s cheffy – and it suits him – though he has a lot more hair than his namesake. Happy days? He loves walks by the river or beach but walks around puddles or mud. He’s a bit scared of the sea.
MAY/JUN19
Good grooming? His breed is known for the hair over their faces. He can still see – he has huge eyelashes. He’s very high maintenance – he has a de-tangle spray for his hair but doesn’t like a ponytail. Memorable moments? He recently discovered and ate too much chocolate – which is so bad for a dog. He was very poorly. Playmates? He’d like to be a sheepdog as he is captivated by sheep – but his true friend is a border collie owned by a lady who comes and walks him. Dog days? His perfect day is a long, long walk ending up at his favourite pub in Whorlton where there’s a cosy dog corner. He eats doggie popcorn and drinks dog beer, which has subtle flavour notes of chicken stock! If he was a character? Tigger. Bouncy, friendly, excited and loves cuddles and kisses.

HOME GROWN
Grow for it It’s a great time in the garden for chef Michael Penaluna and his kitchen foragers who are bringing all things seasonal to menus at Wynyard Hall, as he tells Kathryn Armstrong...
When chef Michael Penaluna arrived at his new place of work he knew his surroundings would be spectacular. Wynyard Hall takes some beating when it comes to grandeur. In terms of scale, landscape and history it ranks as one of the most important properties in the UK. What he didn’t expect was just how much influence the estate’s grounds would have on the food that he and his team would be serving up. “Immediately I was blown away by the place but in the time I have been here we have really started to team up with the gardeners and growers on the estate to create something amazing in the kitchen”, he says. Michael is executive chef, so his remit covers the Wellington Restaurant’s set lunch and dinner menus, the a la carte offering and the bar and in-room menus. He joined Wynyard from Jesmond Dene House where he achieved the culinary accolade of three AA rosettes. Seasonality and best produce have long been at the heart of the food Michael cooks, so he feels blessed by the variety of ingredients he can find just a short fresh-air walk from his Wynyard kitchens. The showcase Edible Garden at Wynyard is home to a lush array of fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers which look pick-me perfect in their wooden containers. For Michael and his team they are something of an irresistible sweetshop, where they are let loose daily. They find their way to the kitchens where the team preserves, pickles and prepares the freshest ingredients for use in every dish. The rich pickings might include kale and hazelnut pesto or perhaps a side of mixed leaves and buttermilk dressing. With a burger in the bar, you can enjoy homemade orchard chutney or red cabbage and coriander coleslaw. The a la carte menu takes you to steamed
turbot with salsify, spring onion and sea purslane or venison carpaccio with pickled turnip and crispy cavolo nero. “It’s a gourmet garden and we work with the growers on new things all the time. It’s so energising and exciting”, says Michael. “The success of dishes is in coming at it from all angles. Farmers, local growers and gardens creating the perfect marriage. “If I want some edible flowers then they are there – as fresh as they can be. We make the most of what is growing,” adds Michael. His head chef, Ryan Carr, is an avid forager so he’s never happier than when he’s tramping the grounds at Wynyard on the lookout for the likes of wild mushrooms, wild garlic or the most tender of herby shoots. “He is so good at flavour pairings and loves the simplicity of foraged flavours – he’s very exciting and has the hunger for experimentation,” adds Michael. Above all, it is about bringing the locality of the food to the table for Michael. He has homemade butter from the local Butter Girls and often heads to the coast for seaweed. “We are a kitchen of experimentation,” says Michael. “Curing, smoking, fermenting and making the most of what is growing nearby.” He’s particularly excited about the arrival of a part-time nutritionist from California, who is joining the team as a bridge between kitchen and garden. “She will create a good connection between the two. She will harvest the produce then work with us on flavours and new ideas – the delicacy of small, sweet flowers or young shoots added to dishes. “It’s a really exciting time for all the team here – we have five chefs travelling down from Newcastle every day who have come with us on the food journey. “It is like a family here and we nurture the team. Shouty kitchens are a thing of the past. We like to look after people.” wynyardhall.co.uk
FOOD FOR THOUGHT... Family food memory >> Mam’s corned beef and tattie hotpot. Her mam and nan made it too. It’s so simple and tasty and all the family sit round and devour it. Chefs who inspire >> People like Marcus Wareing, Marco of course, and closer to home, Terry Laybourne. Terry really brought out the chef in me and made me realise that you have to take it seriously. Chris Eagle at Saltwater and Porterhouse in Fenwick is also a guy who really cooks form the heart. Local flavours >> I love a trip to Longsands in Tynemouth

for fish and chips. Owner Simon Walsh is a great friend of mine and really enjoys what he does and nurtures his team. Memorable meal >> I went to L’enclume in Cumbria recently which is always brilliant. I was also invited to Raby Hunt – James’s food is incredible. Favourite ingredient >> Has to be the truffle! Last meal? >> Shellfish linguine. Simple but perfect ingredients – I had it at Rick Stein’s place in Padstow.

For burger bites… Jumping Bean, Durham
2
For American-style junk food… Grumpy Panda, Gateshead
3 MAY/JUN19
Sometimes, you just need a burger. You just do. And that’s absolutely ok in our book. Finding a good plant-based patty isn't hard these days - most North East foodie joints offer them - but finding a great one can be tricky, depending on where you are. If you’re Durham-bound, you need to check out Jumping Bean. Burger bites include pulled jackfruit with BBQ sauce and vegan slaw, “fakey bacon cheez” burgers with crispy onion rings and Mexican and Indian-style patties, topped with three-bean chilli and mango chutney. Pair ‘em with big portions of dirty fries and an Oreo and peanut butter milkshake or two and you’re winning. jumpingbeandurham.co.uk
Allow Grumpy Panda to take you on a flavour-packed journey across the pond. It’s the North East’s only vegan American-style diner, ran by a family of vegans and known and loved for its lip-smackingly-good dishes, inspired by those found in USA’s deep south, border and beyond. Everything from towering ‘cheezburgers’ and Philly ‘Cheezstake’ sandwiches, to tofu and jackfruit burritos and tacos, deep-fried cauliflower wings with dairy-free buffalo sauce and ranch dip for dunking and mean meat-free hot ‘dawgs’. For something sweet, try the fluffy Biscoff pancakes, drizzled in vegan chocolate sauce. Who’s counting calories anyway? grumpypanda.co.uk
For on-the-go fuel… Hungry Vegan, Newcastle
If you think speedy plant-based grub stops at falafel and tofu, then think again! The folks at Hungry Vegan, based in one of STACK’s cool containers, serve up a wide range of quick treats to enjoy, from freshly-made subs and salads, to hot-from-the-oven pastries, pasties (try their ‘cheeze’ and onion creation - it’s up there with Greggs’ vegan sausage roll), gooey, just-baked cookies, cupcakes and more. All 100% vegan, 100% of the time. A great lunchtime stop-off. stacknewcastle.com

For meat and dairy-free fry-ups, then look no further than The Good Apple Cafe - Sunderland’s celebrated vegan hang-out. Big brekkies include avo on toast, homemade veggie sausages, grilled mushrooms, garlicky grilled mushrooms, hash browns and baked beans. Plates so good, you’d never think they were vegan. There’s also scrambled tofu on toast, vegan wraps, toasties and bagels (the roast veggie and hummus option is delish) if you’re in the mood for brunchy options, as well as daily specials like vegan quiche, falafel and salad and homemade soup. goodapplecafe.co.uk
For home comforts… The Waiting Room, Stockton
It may be an award-winning veggie restaurant first and foremost, but The Waiting Room’s vegan options are too good not to mention. The menus change depending on the season, but our spring picks include roast garlic, herb and butterbean pâté, puy lentil enchiladas (you can ask for vegan cheese) and cashew, carrot and apple loaf with onion gravy, spring greens and balsamic roast beetroot. In other words, a mighty good take on a plant-based Sunday dinner. As we head into summer, look out for cauliflower and almond gratin and puy chilli and rice. Yum. thewaitingroom.uk

A GRAND ENTRANCE
IN THE MIX
Aprons on as we head to York for a stirring session at the region’s newest cookery school...
“Keep it simple and show some respect.” We’re talking food, kitchens and ingredients; the specialist subject of Andrew Dixon. He’s the chef heading up the newly-opened Cookery School at The Grand Hotel in York. And a cool culinary domain it is. The shiny new basement is home to banks of cooking stations decked out with state-of the-art kit such as fancy hobs, cheffy utensils and baking equipment, all of which makes an embarrassment of the stuff in your

cupboards at home. This is a very glossy and modern rather than rustic experience. Preparation space looks out to a courtyard area on one side and to another you clock the big communal table where happy times are to be had with something you prepared earlier. That might mean perfect pasta, ‘proper’ pies, a seafood feast or the ultimate afternoon tea. You could be diving into the cuisine of Spain, the tastes of Thailand or bringing your little ones along to master the ultimate burger or homemade meatballs. Cookery school sessions cover all the bases
for all levels of skill in the kitchen. From the Masterchef-wannabe tackling souffles or sous vide cooking to the amateur who just wants to be able to crack the basics of Sunday roasts and authentic Yorkshire puds. There’s a huge array of tempting classes and Andrew Dixon and his team are truly hands-on when it comes to delivering. Andrew has experience by the casserole-load. He’s a former 3 AA Rosette chef on a mission to take the mystery out of cooking and encourage his knife-wielding pupils to try something new. Originally from Newcastle, the affable Andrew
is a natural in front of both stove and audience. He’s risen through the kitchen ranks and with his wife opened an acclaimed restaurant with rooms, The Weir in Somerset, which achieved 3 AA Rosettes within ten months of opening. Now he’s in his element passing on knowledge and enthusiasm to his kitchen charges. In opening week we joined the class for a session learning how to make the ultimate Thai green fish curry. Easy you think. We’ve all grabbed a jar of curry paste, some salmon and a can of

We even learn how to peel a pepper (saying is less easy than doing to be honest). Use a potato peeler, says Andrew, demonstrating the art of peeling the green pepper that’s heading to our dish. Who knew? Top tips like this are what cookery schools are all about. Some know-how to take back home with you. Andrew demonstrates how to make a fresh paste with zingingly-vibrant ingredients such as chilli, galangal, lemongrass, garlic and banana shallots. The smell is fabulous. But it is ingredients such as shrimp paste and lime leaves that make dishes like this sing. You know, the ones that you don’t happen to have in the kitchen cupboard. By far the best thing about a session like this (alongside the wine-while-you-cook), is the array of teeny pots filled with magical ingredients which add the flourish to make the dish restaurant-worthy. “The paste makes the recipe and that’s the skill,” says Andrew. Once you master it then you can adapt it, make a batch then freeze

What you produce doesn’t have to be something from a Michelin restaurant.” Having watched Andrew’s demo and enjoyed some chat, we’re sent to our stations to create the curry based around the amazing Thai paste. We peel those peppers, chop some mushrooms and spring onions, mixing, pouring and gently simmering the sauce until it’s time to add the lovely fish – salmon, squid, king prawns and monkfish – the curry

Stupidly stressful under these conditions when you’re used to opening a microwave bag (Tilda is the best says Andrew, when challenged on the subject). TASTY TRAVELS
Vive la France!
easy here. Andy does a lot of pickling cabbage, beets, turnips etc. We will be picking loads of wild garlic for pesto. “We like to make really healthy food. Our salads are really popular – there are a lot of plant-based dishes and we had a vegan mezze box as a special recently which was popular,” Emma adds. In their world of work as private chefs, Emma and Andy had to respond to different food wishes and whims from their clients. Americans on the Canal du Midi were
seduced by classic French cuisine for example, but the pair became adept at responding to every food need. Today, thanks to Audrey, they are becoming talked-about for their fresh and healthy take on street food. Their girls Martha, two and Ayla, four, are Audrey’s little sisters and will be joining her on at least part of her summer food tour in the North East. To follow the Adventures in Aude food trail, check out: adventuresinaude.co.uk
Inspired by food and travel adventures in France, Andy Haimes and Emma Mate brought a charming memento back to the North East
Audrey is a sprightly and chic 73-year-old who loves to feed people. She’s not overly keen on chilly Northumberland winters and is partial to some TLC, but once the sun starts to shine she likes nothing more than hanging out by the coast. She’s the showcase for Adventures in Aude. The very name is a play on words. Audrey the vintage Citroen van has travelled across Europe from her sunny home in the Aude region of France where owners Emma Mate and Andy Haimes rescued and revamped her. The culinary pair had spent years as chefs in France; in chalets for the ski season and then cooking for gourmet guests holidaying on barges on the beautiful Canal du Midi in the Languedoc region. When Emma became pregnant with baby number two, they realised that their waterborne adventure had to be re-thought. They decided to head back to their native North East – and Audrey came too. “She was a pickup truck,” says Emma. “We had to get her on a trailer to get her back here – I was nine months’ pregnant at the time!
58 luxe-magazine.co.uk
“Then it was a case of getting her fixed up – a paint job and interiors sorted. She needed some TLC - she struggles in winter – she’s French!” Now she’s a popular party girl and loves a big occasion. Audrey pops up at weddings, parties and food markets – with a hectic schedule looming this summer across the North East. That’s as much to do with Andy’s impressive food as it is with Audrey’s chic charm. At their catering kitchen at home near Bolam Lake, Andy and Emma specialise in super-fresh and local food with something of a Med/Moroccan twist. Lots of lovely-to-look-at vibrant, jewelled salads inspired by Ottolenghi, as well as tasty flatbreads cooked on Audrey’s wood-fired oven. They will cook up delicious pizzas too. Food is inspired by the seasons, something Emma and Andy learned to love when they were on the Canal du Midi and the local markets were a daily destination for ingredients for the day’s meals. “It’s about good, fresh seasonal food,” says Emma. “In France it is easy because the markets are filled with what is in season, it is less

Pie high Time to indulge in a hearty British main, served best with a robust red wine. Steve Lawford, head chef at Chadwicks Inn, Maltby, helps us perfect our pie-making skills. The restaurant’s wine expert, Lee Tolley, takes us on a global wine journey, with a tipple to match the traditional main.
Ruby reds >> Amauta (El Porvenir de Cafayate), Valle de Cafayate, Salta, Argentina 2017 (50% Cabernet Franc, 50% Malbec) 14% ABV
From the high altitude region of Cafayate, we have this Cabernet Franc/Malbec blend. The grapes’ extensive exposure to prolonged sunlight gives the wine a deep ruby red colour, with ripe spiced fruit on the palate and a long lasting flavour. A big wine but very moreish.
Faceby Lamb - Pan Roast Saddle, Shepherd’s Pie, Broccoli & Mint Jelly >> Serves 4 Ingredients 16oz lamb saddle 250g lamb mince 4 x shallots 2 x cloves garlic Fresh rosemary Fresh bay leaf 200ml lamb stock 8 x large red skin potatoes 200ml cream 100g butter 3 x heads broccoli 200g tenderstem broccoli 1 x bunch fresh mint 200ml water 200ml white wine vinegar 200g sugar Agar agar
Method Shepherd’s pie Brown off the mince, diced shallots and chopped garlic. Skim off any fat. Tie the rosemary and bay leaf together and add to mince with lamb stock. Slowly cook until thickened. Bake potatoes in oven until soft. Scoop out flesh. In a pan, reduce cream by half then whisk in the butter. Add potato and mix thoroughly until smooth. Broccoli purée Shred the broccoli. Boil in salted water for five minutes and blend. Pass through a sieve. Mint jelly Add mint, water, vinegar and sugar to a pan and bring to boil. Pass through a sieve and weigh out. Add 1% of weight of solution of agar agar. Bring to boil then set in a tray in the fridge. To assemble Pan roast the saddle of lamb until cooked medium. Rest. Assemble shepherd’s pie in small ramekins (we use a pastry ring). Garnish with tenderstem broccoli, broccoli purée, mint jelly and finish with the sauce. Enjoy!
Barbaresco ‘Martinenga’ (Marchesi di Grésy), Piemonte, Italy 2013 100% Nebbiolo 14% ABV
From northern Italy comes this wine from a top producer, where they have been making wine under the Grésy name since 1797. With notes on the nose of cherry and currant, which also come through on the palate with subtle spiced notes. A beautifully balanced top Italian red.
Purgatori (Familia Torres), Costers del Segre, Catalonia, Spain 2014 Cariñena, Garnacha Tinta, Syrah blend 14.5% ABV
Wine has been made here as far back as 1780 when the monks of the Montserrat Abbey farmed the land to provide for the diocese. An intensely dark red with blueberries and dried fruits on the palate, and a slight smoky note. An absolute treat that just screams Spain.

POWER PUB
Rooms with a view A cool pub with rooms has opened its doors in a little-known village by the River Tees. Kathryn Armstrong dips in to The Devonport... Marcus Bennett might be best known for his accomplishments in the kitchen, but get him started on the subject of wallpaper and talk of menus goes on the backburner. The man just loves a makeover! Chef and restaurateur Marcus has been very much hands-on in the revamp of The Devonport Hotel in the village of Middleton One Row on the banks of the River Tees near Darlington. He and business partner Jonathan Hall have given this former coaching inn a relaxed new look that blends character with contemporary to create an easy-going boutique hotel that works for visitors and locals. Marcus has been living and breathing all things interiors, from paint shades to

bespoke wallpaper, while Jonathan has been the go-to for fixtures and fittings – not least the design of a new outside south-facing terrace, which will maximise the Devonport’s unrivalled views over the river and countryside. Marcus and Jonathan are the guys behind some of the area’s best-loved eating places, among them Cena and Muse in Yarm, as well as the acclaimed Bay Horse gastropub in Hurworth. So, within The Devonport you will see their distinctive and cool style played out in the form of woodwork painted in deep moody shades contrasting with the shine of a copper bar or the textures of old wooden floorboards and flagstones. Nothing too matchy-matchy in a style that they say is ‘organic’ and changing as the place settles into itself. But back to the wallpaper. For the past few
months Marcus has been in the midst of a renovation of his own home, a vast Georgian property in the village of Gainford near Barnard Castle. He’s been living and breathing every detail from cornicing to skirting boards, getting period details right and spending his days on the hunt for original pieces to add the right touches to his own home and The Devonport. He tracked down the wallpaper and fabrics company, Lewis & Wood, who produce distinctive heritage designs. The papers feature on walls throughout the building, in public and private dining areas, creating a definite ‘look again’ talking point. Among charming designs is one of birds drawn by the great 17th Century naturalist and wood engraver, Thomas Bewick, who spent his childhood roaming the Northumberland countryside. The design comes from the first two volumes of the ‘History of British Birds’. In one of the Devonport’s lobbies there’s a bold Lewis & Wood design of sailing ships taken from the 18th Century nautical publication Liber Nauticus. The paper has a crisp, outdoorsy feel. Says Marcus of the project: “This place is a blend of contemporary and historical and we wanted to make it look ‘discovered’. “We have filled it with things we’ve found that we feel work with the building and its history. We’ve added hints of things that have always been part of our story – I first had little copper pans in the Bay Horse and now we’ve got a lovely warm copper bar in the Devonport. “There are a lot of textures such as wood, stone and tiles and we have used rich heritage colours – particularly Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue and Old White in the bar area. “We have eight bedrooms with Harrison Spinks beds and modern tiled bathrooms. The fittings are supplied locally where we can,” he adds. The layout of the building was altered to
put the main door in the centre of the building and simplify a space that had previously acted as something of a corridor. Jonathan continues, “Marcus is good at getting the colours and the vibe right for a place and adding layers to create the look we’re after. We worked with a design team from Northern Pulp and a guy called Ian Crowther. “Alongside this we are always on the lookout for pieces that fit with the place – we got some weathered old oak stools from an antique fair for example – things that add a bit of warmth and age. “What we’ve created is a pub with rooms which offers really good pub food and is family friendly”, adds Jonathan. Leading the kitchen team at The Devonport is head chef Carl Hodgson. Jonathan and Marcus have a good team who rotate through their different restaurants, ensuring consistency in food and service. The Devonport offers up a menu of reliable classics and crowd-pleasers such as good steaks, seafood and burgers. Not to mention the unrivalled fish and chips. Jonathan and Marcus love attention to detail and wanted to make sure the fish and chips were spot-on. They headed to the award-winning Longsands Fish Kitchen in Tynemouth to get the lowdown on the perfect fish fryer, using the place as their reference point for getting it right at The Devonport. The result? “We spent £35,000 on what is the most modern fish fryer you can buy – we did loads of research and it’s a very precise art – you can’t get it wrong. Everything is timed and there are eight rules and timers in the process. Prep is everything, but we’ve got it right! “We cook in 100% sunflower oil and use sustainable fish – and we do a two for £15 fish and chips special which our customers are definitely embracing!” devonport.com

CALM QUEEN
Calm not clutter Tidying guru Marie Kondo has sent the nation into a folding frenzy. Closer to home de-clutter expert Cath Hindle keeps it real...
Tidying has become a thing. Someone has realised that the gathering of boxes and decanting of life’s accumulated ‘stuff’ into ‘yes, no, maybe’ piles really is good for the soul. It’s as cleansing, satisfying and enriching to the mind as it is to the stuffy boxroom. Neat and tidy shelves and creative storage solutions are a Pintrest or Instagram badge of honour. Much of the fervour is attributed to guru Marie Kondo, so much so that she now has her own Netflix series extolling the virtues of organising your undies drawers. Get that right and everything else falls into place. Cath Hindle’s approach at her Clear the Clutter business, based in Cullercoats, is more realistic, offering a manageable way to get your stuff sorted. Her own house is bright and lovely – but it isn’t a showhome. In the kitchen there’s a big table which contains a well-used and loved craft table, instantly accessible to her two young children. “The reality is that children love bright plastic toys, but their parents will want the lovely wooden toys on show. If they play with Lego then make it accessible. “Being organised is not about a house that is perfectly clean, it is about having a house that works for them where everything has a place”, she says. Marie Kondo famously asks her clients to get rid of items that don’t ‘spark joy’. For Cath it is simple. “It’s about getting rid of things and reducing the amount of stuff you have and the most
64 luxe-magazine.co.uk
important bit is the organising - putting strategies in place to stay that way. “What I do isn’t rocket science, but because people pay me and I am there with them they get the energy to get started.” Cath’s client list is many and varied. It might be a busy working family in need of a playroom de-clutter, a downsizing couple who need to sort a lifetime’s clutter, or someone with hoarding tendencies. There is an element of the therapist in the work Cath does. She sees at first hand the benefits of getting rid of things that people have been holding on to. “I think of myself as a good listener and know I am empathetic and emotionallyintelligent. People will sit and chat about their old cards and photographs as they sort. “I hear what they say and encourage them to be the better version of themselves or their home. It’s about being gentle, persuasive and resilient and working with people not for them because it has to be a two-way process. “If piles of stuff build up in a home then people become reluctant to invite people in because they feel guilty about it and that leads to isolation.” She can spend a full day with someone really getting to grips with clutter: “the best days, seeing results”. The process can start with the ‘yes, no, maybe’ piles triggered by instant reactions to the ‘stuff’ gathered in garages, lofts, wardrobes or the spare room. “It is giving people permission to get rid of things,” says Cath. “Often they are happy if they know it is
going to be donated to a good cause. They can start letting things go.” Since setting up Clear the Clutter, which is part of a national body, APDO, the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers, Cath has developed good links with a range of charities who benefit from the ‘clutter’ she unearths with clients. “Some things are sold, but we can supply furniture for families in need, in-date food for food banks as well as for other support services across the North East,” says Cath. “When I set up the business the main thing was about organising space, but an important secondary part of the business is giving to charity – in total, 74 different organisations or people,” says Cath. Her tips
for a clutter-free life are: “don’t try to create a hotel or showhome. Nobody lives in one. Your home has to suit your life. “Marie Kondo is right about folding! Stacking clothes front to back helps you find things more easily and saves space. “Confidential papers. Waste companies will take bags of papers for about £6 each. Less work and less mess than doing your own shredding. “The ‘I can’t get rid of this or that because so and so gave it to me’ transaction is over. If it’s not useful or beautiful don’t keep it out of guilt. “Wires and cable chargers. Use different coloured elastic bands to organise them. Only keep the chargers you actually need!
MAY/JUN19
“Sell stuff. I use Facebook marketplace or Gumtree, which are local so people come and collect. “Music Magpie is good if you have lots of CDs to get rid of. “Kitchen cupboards – oldest tins etc at the front and teabags and mugs near the kettle! “Keep small untidy things together in little boxes – like the ones from the takeaway and compartmentalise. “Do a seasonal wardrobe clear-out. I organise clothes by colour. “Keep kids’ toys in the rooms where they will play with them.
Banish party bags! “Children’s artwork. Be ruthless. Love it for a week or two then it can disappear… “Clear kitchen cupboards of those half-burnt candles, bedside tables of bobbles, tissues and tablets! The bedside table is a good place to start a de-clutter; you make a difference really quickly! “Books are the thing people are most attached to. Marie Kondo says 30 is enough – but this is the one thing that always provokes a reaction!” clear-the-clutter.co.uk

The simple interiors have actually influenced parts of our new home. If you do get the chance to visit the beautiful isle of Ibiza this summer, you must check out a few of my favourite hotspots. From beach clubs and day-out destinations, to restaurants and sunshine spots, here’s where you should be hanging out in Ibiza... LUXE LOCAL
Yarm Friendly independents, lively bars and muchloved restaurants. Historic Yarm has charm galore on its cobbled high street...
PROPERTIES >> Old and new are in the mix when it comes to properties. In Yarm itself, just off the high street, there are characterful cobbled ‘wynds’ filled with properties of all shapes and sizes. You can find cosy cottages with beams, higgledy-piggledy townhouses or riverside apartments. Either side of the high street you find grand Edwardian and Victorian properties in Yarm and Eaglescliffe and there’s an impressive array of executive new builds on the outskirts – but most within walking distance of the lively high street. Yarm and Eaglescliffe have great schools, as well as access to open countryside surrounding the River Tees. CONNECTED >> Almost as well connected as Meghan and Harry. You can get to London on the Grand Central rail service in about three hours direct from Eaglescliffe Station – which also gets to mainline services at Darlington in 15 minutes. Yarm station is on the TransPennine line, so you’re direct to York in about 40 minutes or straight to Leeds, Manchester or Liverpool. In terms of roads, there can be a rush hour crawl into Yarm high street from both sides, but it’s also accessible for the A66, A1 and A19. Durham Tees Valley airport on Yarm’s doorstep has recently moved to new

ownership so there are big plans for an expansion of flights over coming years. For now you can get to Schipol Airport in Amsterdam for access across the globe or fly to Aberdeen or Humberside daily. SHOP >> Yarm’s a great place to while away a few hours buying things you never realised you needed. Home to independent retailers trying really hard to offer a proper high street, they strive to offer great service and a touchyfeely experience that beats online. Some lovely shops offer friendly faces, well-chosen products and invaluable knowledge. For clothes you can nip into The House, Attitudes or DC Couture for an emergency Saturday night outfit – or head to Fat Face for emergency weekend sofa-night PJs. Great designer kids clothes at Elfin and nice shoes at Moda in Pelle. Get some top-of-the-range audio or TV tech at Bang & Olufsen or spend ages mooching over lovely things at Strickland and Holt. This mini department store is packed with character and well-chosen stock. The perfect place when you need a birthday card and gift for all ages and occasions. It’s also home to a clothing department that knows its market with brands such as Powder and Masai. You can hop on a boat at the jetty to the rear of Sainsbury’s on the high street and take the river ride to Preston Park museum which has a great living history museum with a Victorian street and the grounds are home to an impressive children’s play area with a skate park. At Preston Park and Yarm from May you can also hire rowing boats from the Rivershack team and make the most of the tranquil waters.
my local Kimberley Overfield is owner of Cloud Cuckoo gifts and interiors store in Yarm High Street, celebrating ten years in business in 2019. Three good things about living here >> • Yarm is full of independent shops and boutiques, great for finding that something special. • We have such a fantastic range of places to eat and drink. You can get pretty much anything you fancy! For a night out the little wine bars that have been opening are such a bonus for a cosy, intimate feel. • Most importantly, it’s the people that make Yarm such a nice place to be. Three places to take visitors >> • For anyone with children, a day out at Preston Park and Butterfly World is an absolute must! • I love taking my mum for a relaxing treatment in one of our many beauty salons. They all offer something different so we alternate between Adora Belle, At The Skin Company and Inspire Beauty. • The best way to see the beautiful scenery surrounding the high street is on the riverboat by Rivershack. You get picturesque views of the viaduct from the river and in such a peaceful and picture-perfect setting. An ‘in the know’ secret: >> One of Yarm’s best kept secrets is a gorgeous little Italian deli called Borrellis. Tesla’s headturning Model X has stop-inyour-tracks good looks, plug-in performance and definite driver appeal writes Allan Boughey...
Electric cars have been around for some time now – but look around you on the roads and you’ll be hard pressed to notice many truly one hundred percent plug-ins. Perhaps that’s because, for electric cars to become fully feasible, they have to offer the same levels of comfort and convenience as their petrol or diesel counterparts; and be priced just as competitively. Hybrids go some way to easing our conscience about burning all that oil, but they are surely a halfway house; a compromise while we’re waiting for something better to materialise. For some time now, we seem to have been on the threshold of that better place – the battery-powered transport revolution maybe – though could 2019 turn out to be the year when more of us were able to make the leap? Tesla has been one of the leading lights in pioneering the development of electric cars pretty much since it was founded in 2003. The company has introduced a series of eye-catching variants over the last decade, from the sleek Model S saloon, to the sporty Roadster, and the SUV-style Model X. And later this year, the Model 3 will be added to the roster. The Model 3 is Tesla’s big hope for mass market supremacy, and may well be the car that will finally herald in the era of the plug-in. It will still be in the premium car bracket (starting at around £35,000) but with measly running costs and zero emissions, it will offer many motorists a far more appealing and genuine alternative to petrol or diesel. With a range of around 300 miles, the majority of motorists may only need to charge the vehicle once a week, while it will undoubtedly borrow at least some of the luxurious and technology-rich features of the company’s other brands. The new model has been dogged by production issues at the Tesla factory in
MAY/JUN19
T h e X-f a c to r
California, but at the start of April, Bloomberg reported that as many as 80,000 Model 3s are rolling off the Fremont automated production line every week. That’s a lot of cars, but then there are thousands upon thousands of orders waiting to be honoured. If the production estimate proves to be correct, then Tesla will surely be on to a winner with the 3. Over the last decade or so Tesla has proved that it is at the front of the plug-in pack. Very few other manufacturers can offer Tesla’s combination of battery power, range, charging time, charging network, build quality, comfort, and pure technology. Teslas are easy to use and offer almost consciencefree motoring (all you have to worry about is how green the electricity you’re using is). The Model S, which we featured in Luxe last year, has proved an amazingly strong advert for Tesla’s merits in the saloon marketplace. And now the Model X is doing the same in the SUV class. The Model X boasts space-age looks and no short measure of advanced capabilities. With its large single screen display, the X looks pretty similar inside the cabin to the S; it’s just much larger of course. Other notable differences include the wrap-over windscreen, which eats into much of the space where the car’s metal roof
should be, and opens up a panoramic view of the world, and the top-opening DeLorean-like rear doors, which certainly attract attention. The X also offers the option of seven seats. All in all, it’s a more practical version of the S. And with a range approaching 350 miles, acceleration of 0 to 60mph in under three seconds, and a top speed of 155mph, the X is no slouch in performance terms either. In fact, the acceleration is awesome; push-you-back-in-your-seat, take-yourbreath-away awesome, though all that power is also incredibly easy to control – an experience that very few rivals can seriously offer but without all the drawbacks (like the gas guzzling, for example). The big screen is larger than most laptops and enables access to all of the car’s controls, from the sat nav, to digital radio, to your Spotify account, to the heating controls (the world’s first medical grade HEPA air filter system), and everything else. It’s as simple to use as a smartphone – and the X will stay that way, as over-the-air software upgrades will keep it at the top of its game. Safety is also a key feature of all Teslas with all-wheel drive and automatic transmission. The X is expected to gain a five-star safety rating in all categories in due course, which would make it the first SUV ever to do so. And, of course, Teslas also boast the ability to drive autonomously (look, no hands); a slightly scary prospect perhaps but quite legal in certain places and ultra-safe too. The impending 5G network launch will improve its autopilot capabilities yet further. In five years, autonomous vehicles may become common on British roads and Tesla will be leading the way. One of the key issues that sets Tesla apart from most other plug-ins is the efficiency of its batteries – it’s possible to achieve well over 100 miles of range from as little as 30 minutes on a supercharger – while the charging network the company is establishing across the UK is second to none. Even very long journeys can be done in the same time as a conventional car.
The X is simply gorgeous, and easy, to drive and use. With a price tag of around £80,000, the X is right up there with the S in terms of being a luxury vehicle, but it offers a supercar experience in a highly practical SUV package. There’s got to be a market for that.
Tesla has been one of the leading lights in pioneering the development of electric cars pretty much since it was founded in 2003 And if the price is still a little too steep, there’s always the Model 3, which is likely to offer a similar diving experience to the X (or S for that matter). After promising to revolutionise motoring for many years, Tesla seems to be on the cusp of establishing itself as the world’s leading plug-in manufacturer. By the end of the year it will have a range of vehicles on offer to suit all needs and most pockets. See the full range of Teslas at: tesla.com

To p of it s g a me The new Macan does Porsche proud, with a sporty new look and a bump in power...
I remember when Porsche originally launched the Cayenne - an ugly car that went on to sell in huge numbers. However, despite die-hard Porsche fans being appalled by the introduction of SUVs, they’ve actually helped Porsche make serious money. The sales have enabled the manufacturer to
continue making great sports cars like the 918 and GT range. And most importantly, the 911 is still going strong. The second-generation Cayenne looked much better, in my opinion, and with the introduction of diesel engines, the car went on to become a phenomenon. It was only going to be a matter of time before Porsche launched a smaller and slightly cheaper SUV and, using the same
chassis that the Q5 is based on, they launched the Macan. The Macan was launched back in 2014 and it’s gone on to become the best-selling Porsche. By the end of this year, they expect to have sold 400,000 cars. In 2017, they sold 97,000 Macans worldwide - the highest number of sales for any Porsche model. When you’ve created such a well-loved model, you’d be stupid to risk changing its winning formula too much. And, thankfully, Porsche hasn’t made any huge changes to the car. The car’s front end now features LED lights and it has sportier-looking bumpers, too. The rear has a full-width light bar, which has also found its way to the Panamera, Cayenne and on to the new 911. New 20 and 21-inch alloy wheels are now available, too, which I’m pleased about. As you know, I’m a fan of big alloys - they just fill out the arches and give the car a sporty look. The car has been launched in three new colours; Miami Blue, Crayon and Mamba Green. But, I have to say, I liked the colour Crayon so much that I actually painted the exterior of Sachins, my restaurant, the same. A few years ago, a diesel engine was the obvious choice, but since ‘diesel-gate’, driving a diesel car is a bit like being a smoker these days - it’s very much frowned upon! And so, Porsche has taken the bold step
of dropping diesel engines from the range, despite them previously being its bestselling engine. The Macan is only available with two petrol engines; the entry engine is a two-litre, which is pretty much the same engine found in the Golf GTi. This engine isn’t a slouch. Considering the extra weight in the Macan, it still manages to get the car to 62 mph in an impressive 5.4 seconds. The Macan S is fitted with a three-litre engine V6 and its economy isn’t far off the smaller engine, so I wouldn’t bother going for the smaller engine. The larger one still sounds great and it gets you to 62 mph a bit quicker. Car kindly supplied by Porsche Edinburgh.

POWER UP
The all-new BMW 8 Series is a statementmaking sports car that comes alive on the open roads...
Mighty motor The original 8 Series was launched back in 1990 and it certainly was a head-turner. The car’s futuristic looks were well and truly ahead of their time, from the pop-up head lights, to the V12 engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Other groundbreaking features were the multi-link rear axle along with the drive by wire throttle - very impressive at the time. The 8 was the first computer-designed BMW and I think they did an amazing job. Unfortunately, eventually BMW stopped production of the 8 in 1999, but the car is still a real favourite today. Fast forward to 2019 and the all-new 8 Series has been launched again - and one
thing you can’t help but notice is just how big the car actually is. Thankfully, the car has cameras and sensors all over the place and, believe me, they are definitely needed. This time round, the new car faces stiff competition from the Aston DB11, Mercedes S Class Coupe and Bentley Continental, which are all very beautifullooking cars. The 8 Series really has its work cut out. The new 8 looks like a stretched out 6 Series that’s been to the gym a few times! It looks really aggressive from the front and the massive new trademark kidney grills are amazing. The car I drove was a real head-turner of a colour - a bright, burnt orange. Fitted with black alloy wheels and a carbon roof, it
looked absolutely stunning. If you saw this car approaching you in your rear-view mirror, you’d just move out of the way. It looks so mean and menacing. The previous 8 Series had some amazing technology, so BMW had to up their game with the current 8. It is a four-wheel drive and has four-wheel steering, active anti-roll bars, laser head lights and the latest in Driver Assistance Technology. BMW’s latest iDrive is the best so far; it features large icons for all of the major functions, which makes it extremely easy to use. The car is initially launched with two engines and you have a choice of two V6s; petrol or diesel. Both engines will get you to 60mph in under five seconds very impressive. As this car is a GT Coupe, I’d be tempted to go for the diesel, especially if you’re planning on using the car to travel across to Europe. The engineers have made the diesel engine sound more like a petrol V6 inside by pumping the sound of a petrol engine via the speakers. Stand outside of the car and you’ll be under no illusions that this car is actually a diesel. The car features a digital dash, a mix of lovely metal and sumptuous leather, but the dials in the 8 were a bit of a strange shape and I didn’t like the way the rev counter worked the wrong way. The satellite navigation, in the middle of the dials, was also quite confusing. The optional crystal gear knob and iDrive wheel are a bit gimmicky if you ask me. Getting into the rear is a challenge, as it seems to take the seat a lifetime to move forward. Getting into the back is a bit like doing the limbo. It’s not all that easy sitting in the front either - trying to reach my seat belt was a challenge. In a Mercedes Coupe or Convertible, the seat belt is passed to you and I think that this would be handy
in the 8. Take this car to the country roads, put it into Sport+ mode and it transforms into a mighty sports car. Thanks to its four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering, along with the adaptive suspension and active roll bars, which use electric motors to lean the car into a corner as soon as you turn the steering wheel, it promises a thrilling, yet controlled, ride. The car’s driver aids make sure you don’t stray out of your lane, but if you do, the car gets you back on course, albeit, with a quite harsh tug of the wheel. If you take your hands off the wheel for too long, the system gets annoyed and alerts you to put your hands back to where they need to be.
Take this car to the country roads, put it into Sport+ mode and it transforms into a mighty sports car The stress-free cruise control, which watches the road ahead and accelerates and decelerates the car, can be set to the distance between the car ahead, so it isn’t braking every two minutes. I really enjoyed my time driving the 8. I know it’s not a cheap car, but it is, however, cheaper than all of its rivals. If you’re looking for a GT car to take you on a road trip around Europe, it has to be at the top of your list. It’s not as beautiful as an Aston DB11, but it’s not as expensive either! I’d like to thank Richard at Cooper BMW for sorting the car out for me and I wish him all the luck in the world in his new role at the dealership. Car kindly supplied by Cooper BMW Durham.
