Our paradise awaits Lucy, Robert, Marina and Tristan Dorrien-Smith at the new Penzance Heliport
Tresco is precious, inimitable and utterly unique because, far from just a business, it is a living, breathing community of islanders, owners and guests; a true family estate. My family has a proud history of shaping the community and modern economy of Tresco – and indeed much of Scilly. To that end, it makes me immensely proud that my children have now joined me in forming the Tresco Estate Partnership. This will ensure our family stays at the heart of the island into the future – that all-important thread running through all we do here. Of course, the most exciting development this year is the long-awaited return of the Penzance to Isles of Scilly helicopter service. As I write, final preparations are underway for the first flights in March. Our journey to this point began back in 2012; even before the thrum of rotor blades faded from the Scillonian skies, a small but dedicated group were at work planning the replacement. It is no small feat for a small group of islands just off the coast of Cornwall to become the destination for one of the world’s few scheduled helicopter services. Penzance Helicopters is the culmination
of many years of hard work, dedication and perseverance from so many – and in particular to our island community and diaspora that have so passionately supported the revival of this vital route. The difference this service will make to the social and economic future of the islands cannot be overstated. I look forward to welcoming you onboard!

The McCarthy family ‘ 40 YEARS O F ISLAND SH AR E ’ W ITH DAVID M CCARTH Y
We first set eyes on Tresco in 1970 when a friend offered us a week in a flat on St Mary’s. We took a trip to Tresco and pushed a buggy with two small children around much of the island. On that walk, we passed Smugglers - a traditional cottage hidden within the trees. It was love at first sight! We wondered what lucky people lived there - we didn’t know that it all belonged to the Dorrien-Smith family.

In 1974 we returned for a holiday at The New Inn and managed to book a week in Smugglers for the following year. Then through the rest of the 70s we rented Smugglers. The demand for cottages was tremendous and so I used to sit down with Eve Cooper at the post office and plead with her to open the diary for three years ahead so I could get a week booked in. In 1980, Unilever sent me to work in Kuala Lumpur. We hadn’t been

there long before a letter came through about the first timeshares available on Tresco. There were six of them: Smugglers, Glen, Thatch, Dolphin, Ocean View, and Bay House. As soon as we heard of the news, we bought a week in Smugglers at the end of July, and have come to Tresco every year since. In 1987 we also bought a fortnight in Seaspray in June and since then, we have come twice a year, every year. I think our family will be coming for many years to come. All three of our children love it and so do our grandchildren. Our Tresco breaks are a generational thing. It’s so wonderful that we can all spend quality time together in a place we can call home. The little girl in the photograph with the milk churn is our daughter, Mary. The cat photographed with her was called Tory and would lay on the wall at the foot of the lane where you turn left to the shop. There were always a lot of cats on Tresco, of every size and colour. We were once told they were descendants of cats that escaped from the many ships that foundered off Scilly, way back when. Aside from the cats, there have been many changes on Tresco - but it does remain as beautiful and as relaxing as ever. The views are like nowhere else on earth and the Abbey Garden gets better year-on-year. Yes, there are many more cottages - all of which have been tastefully redesigned over the years - but the development has been really sympathetic. When you think of how many places around the world have been ruined by an influx in visitors, I think we are incredibly lucky to be still holidaying in the place we fell in love with all those years ago. We have so many happy memories on the island. From building boats on the Blockhouse beach for children and later on for grandchildren, to looking for cowries and watching out for Mike Pender’s green dinghy, bringing lobster from Bryher. We’ve spent many afternoons watching the world go by from the quay at New Grimsby, strolling along paths that we like to think nobody else knows, and the special places where we sit down for picnics each year. Tresco means something different to everyone who visits, and over the years, it has presented us with memories we will keep close forever. We have seen some wonderful places when we lived in the Far East and South America, but nowhere compares to the peace we find on Tresco. We’ll be back again soon. David McCarthy

The Avery family ‘ 40 YEA RS O F ISLAND SH AR E’ W ITH JOANNA & M IM I AVE RY Tresco has always been a huge part of our lives. Bristol is home, but we’ve always visited the Isles of Scilly as a family. Our grandfather was posted on Bryher during World War II, where he lived with the Jenkins family. Since then, every member of our family has just fallen in love with the place. Our earliest stays on Tresco were at The New Inn and we also reunited with the Jenkins family at Townshill. As soon as Tresco timeshare launched, our father instantly put his name down for Bay House - a gorgeous cottage in the bay of New Grimsby - and conveniently situated next door to our friends, Dennis and Ethel Jenkins. Since then, we get together as a family to visit Tresco twice a year, usually at Easter and then again at the end of September when

the island has that wonderful late summer vibe. Some of our fondest island memories include getting through Hurricane Charlie in 1983, collecting milk from the dairy, fishing with Dennis Jenkins and enjoying a good plate of beans on toast with the hotel managers’ family in their home. Islanders have become extended family over the years. They used to invite our brother to play cricket for the team in the summer; I always remember the inter-island matches, which were played on what is now the Heliport - and Andrew Lawson appearing with his pet parakeet on his shoulder! Another island highlight for us was ringing in the millennium. It was such a special new year celebration. All of the surrounding islands marked the occasion with a national beacon-lighting event, which we will remember forever. We also have great memories whiling the hours away with jigsaw

puzzles and pool tournaments in the old hotel. There’s no doubt about it, Tresco trips will continue to run in the family. Joanna’s son was named after the island of Samson. It has shaped our upbringing, and we’d love nothing more than to share that with future generations. Tresco is the only place we know where we can all truly relax and unwind. Nothing else matters when you’re holidaying on Tresco. Time seems to stand still, and the pace of life slows down. It is very special. All of that, paired with wonderful people who have, over the years, become like extended family to us. While it retains its charm and character, Tresco has changed slightly over the years - but only for the better. We see a lot of familiar faces - both locals and other owners - but it’s also nice to see some new people working, living and visiting the island. New buildings are popping up here and there, there’s no need to
use the telephone box (with the best view on the island) anymore, and the cricket pitch is now a heliport. Times are changing, but the beauty of the island very much stays the same. Tresco is a real home from home, and we can’t wait to make many more memories with the Averys of the future. The island’s unique draw is its ability to make you feel like you’re the only people there - together with its vibrant colours, crystal-clear waters and the enchanting wildlife everywhere you turn. If we could take a piece of Tresco home with us, it would have to be that feeling of absolute bliss. An unbridled happiness… Joanna & Mimi Avery

Isle of plenty “Once you connect with the island, there’s no going back, it becomes a part of you”, says long-term visitor turned local resident, Rachel Young
During her Tresco journey, Rachel has gone from guest to islander - something many regular visitors only dream of... Tresco is an escape, a retreat, a community and a home from home, among many other things. For Rachel, who organises Tresco’s events and breaks and is also responsible for St Nicholas Church and the Parsonage, the island is all of the above. Childhood memories flood in as we sit down to discuss Rachel’s journey to Tresco. “I visited the Isles as a child and remember my introduction to the islands back in the 70s,” says Rachel. “Fast forward a few years, my mum and stepfather happened to be on the islands when the Tresco timeshare programme came into fruition. They jumped at the opportunity and enjoyed a couple of holidays here every year. “So I guess it’s always been a part of my life, but it wasn’t until I was 25 when I first visited Tresco. “I had worked abroad in various places from Canada to Finland, working in childcare and pre-school education; but as soon as I settled back in the UK, I was intrigued to visit the place my family had fallen in love with. “The first time I stepped off the boat I was blown away by the island’s beauty. After that first visit, I came back twice a year for the next 10 years. I just couldn’t get enough of the place - it was like nowhere else I’d been before. “It wasn’t until I was 35 when I decided I was ready for change. I’d been working hard, I had lost my mum and I thought, ‘right, I’m going to escape for the summer’. I just wanted to get away, rent out my flat and do something completely different. “I packed my bag and tootled off to Tresco for the summer season, and

I’ve never looked back! It has been a 17-year-long season and is still in full swing!” Whether you’re a one-time visitor, a timeshare owner, or a local living on the island, Tresco has the ability to trigger happy memories be it the sheer beauty of the place, the activities available on-island, or the friendly faces that make the place tick. “For me, it’s Tresco’s wildness that makes me happy. The freedom it gives you is so special,” says Rachel. “There’s nowhere else quite like it. It’s safe, it’s secure and it’s a place filled with smiling faces all year round.” Tresco has many unique qualities - from its pristine coastline, to its tropical gardens and glorious local produce - but one of its biggest draws has to be its community spirit. And at the very heart of it, is Rachel. “We’re in a bit of bubble here,” she smiles. “It’s a little bit like stepping back in time. For me to come here from Cheltenham - which is a fairly busy place with loads going on - was quite a big change, but believe it or not, it’s so much more sociable and fulfilling than my old life. “I’ve moved around quite a lot, and I’ve never experienced a community like this. It’s a wonderful thing to be a part of - and whether I’m reading my book in my little spot on the beach and a friendly face waves as they whizz on by on a bike up Appletree Road, or I’m working with other locals to arrange the flowers for a special Sunday church service, there’s always something going on to keep me busy. “As a resident, Tresco is particularly lovely out-of-season when all of the locals come out to play. There’s always something happening - whether it’s a mobile feast where we move between each other’s houses for

each course, a themed quiz night, open-mic sessions or just a winter’s afternoon in the pub.” At one time, the islands were small, self-sufficient communities of fishermen and their families. Today, the islands may have seen an increase in tourism, but they remain home to the same fishing families and farmers. “When we visited Scilly as children, on islands such as Bryher and St Martin’s, you’d be lucky to get a cup of tea in the colder months,” says Rachel. “From what I remember, you might find someone serving from a flask in a shed, with milk straight from the cow... but now there’s plenty for people to see and do - but without being overpowering. “And I think that’s what Tresco has managed so well,” adds Rachel. “There’s a really good balance. You can come here on a bank holiday in August and pretty much have the beach to yourself. “And at the end of the day when the sun sets and the boats head back to shore, you know that you’ve just got a good mix of local

people and guests just winding down on the island. It’s like retreating back to your home for the evening. A home shared with many familiar faces, regular visitors and people getting a glimpse into island life. “It’s a very unique way of looking at life - and we are so lucky to be able to have that experience.” Rachel is the beating heart of the community - wearing many hats in her role. You might find her in the office putting together new activity breaks, preparing for services in her role as Assistant Church Warden or organising community events with fellow islanders. “I’ve always got a new idea; and I am lucky enough to be able to pitch it and roll with it,” says Rachel. “One of my biggest projects at the moment is working on and perfecting our unique breaks. It’s a wonderful way of ensuring our guests get the best out of their island experience. “Our packages include artist breaks, yoga retreats, guitar workshops

and photography masterclasses.” Tresco is a spiritual place. It has the ability to soothe the mind and body. It’s the epitome of a ‘getaway’ - and a place where guests and locals alike can really switch off and be at one with nature. For Rachel, it’s somewhere that holds a very special place in her heart, offering up a truly unique lifestyle and inviting her to settle down and call home. “When you live here, sometimes you forget about all of that,” says Rachel. “We got some of the team together for a mindfulness session recently and for me, everything came flooding back and it reminded me what I fell in love with.” When she’s not working on new retreats or keeping the local community in check, Rachel enjoys a bit of downtime sitting by the rocks with a book in hand. “It’s my happy place,” she says.

Finding space... with our island yogi, Gem Hansen
MY YOGA JOURNEY… Started right here on Scilly. Bryher has been home for 38 years and after stints moving away for college, university and travels, there’s nowhere I’d rather be. The islands have a mythical quality to me - a sense of sanctuary and a safe place for my three young children. Nothing beats the fresh air, the big open spaces and on-water commuting. The pace of life is totally serene and steady - moving with the tides. As a child, between school, family catamaran picnics and horse riding along the sandy tracks to Rushy Bay, I practised ballet and dreamt of being a dance teacher. The progression to yoga happened naturally in my early twenties, I am self-taught as I didn’t have regular access to classes, but now I am a qualified teacher. My home practice evolved in synchronicity with my lifestyle, from dynamic stretches that were integrated into my marathon training, to hip openers and restorative poses to support my pregnancies, and post-natal yoga for recovery. Hypno-birthing is another great passion of mine, which gave me further insight into the internal practice of yoga, incorporating meditation, mantra and pranayama.
YOGA IS UNDOUBTEDLY INCREASING IN POPULARITY… And in my opinion, it’s because of its holistic approach. Yoga offers what no other form of exercise will - a complete integration of mind, body and spirit. Asana (physical practice) is a starting point for most people and is an intelligent balance of strength and flexibility development. The philosophy, which transcends religious segregation, offers real life morality with an astonishing realisation that the obstacles faced by humanity thousands of years ago are akin to those we face today despite the opulence of the modern world. There is a deep connection to the human race and the universe, inviting people to feel empathy and meaning beyond their daily existence. As we move from the gross to the subtle, we affect the energetic body,
which is key to preventing disease. The meditative components of the practice offer an antidote to the urgency and turbulence of our daily life.
MY TRESCO YOGA ITINERARY INCLUDES… Bi-weekly slow flow classes and monthly restorative classes. I invite beginners and yogis of all abilities to connect with breath and movement. I also lead private sessions and retreats for those looking for something really special. The styles of yoga I teach include vinyasa, restorative and yin.
RETREATING ON THE ISLAND… The yoga and wellbeing break on Tresco is a five-night autumn retreat involving a variety of expressions of yoga including dynamic flow classes, soothing restorative shapes, guided meditations and an uplifting kirtan. Aside from the yoga, guests will be able to explore the island by bike, take a boat trip to Bryher, meander through the Abbey Garden and enjoy a massage at the Tresco Island Spa.
SEEKING REFUGE IS IMPORTANT, AND TRESCO IS THE PERFECT PLACE TO DO SO… Our lives reflect the seasons… incorporating growth, depletion and rebirth - so to me, autumn is a perfect transitional time to slow down and retreat from routine. Traditionally, retreat guests will experience restoration on a deep level, experimenting with techniques to encourage good health and body balance. For some, it may be an adventure - a chance to travel solo and connect with nature; for others, it may be a healing process after illness or a period of stress. It could also be a detox - either digital or dietary. In yoga, the intention is paramount, and so personal objectives will inspire the value of this peaceful journey.

TRESCO HAS A GENTLE AND QUIET CHARM… Inherent in its slow-paced energy, unspoilt beauty and the absolute escapism of a private island that invites guests to recharge and renew. The air clarity on Scilly is exceptional. Nourished by the sea air, you will breathe better and sleep soundly, too. Subtle silence also brings a sense of escape - no traffic, no street lights, no light pollution, the magic of starry skies and awakening to birdsong. Although small, Tresco comprises woodland trails, natural tunnels of rhododendron, clear waters outlining white sand bays decorated with delicate shells, rugged granite outcrops, purple heather-covered heathland graced with 16th century castles and serene lakes surrounded by marram grass with gliding swans. This unrivalled scenic beauty creates something of a unique experience; and Tresco is truly at its best when coupled with culinary excellence, environmentally-conscious shopping, ila spa treatments and opportunities to be fully-immersed in nature.

locations for mindful moments on Tresco
KING CHARLES CASTLE This castle ruin offers breathtakingly unique views across to Bryher. The scenery takes me by surprise every time. It amazes me to see my very small island home looking so different from every angle. Finding a new perspective is an integral part of the mind technique we are cultivating when we practice yoga and meditation. THE ABBEY DRIVE I can’t help but feel humility and wonder under the shelter of trees on this majestic route extending towards the Abbey Garden. Trees have grounding energy and epitomise the balance of strength, flexibility and serenity we seek in our practice. A wander along the Abbey Drive often results in an encounter with a resplendent golden pheasant, which is always fascinating. GIMBLE PORTH A walk to the northern shore of Tresco involves dipping close to the tideline on narrow paths , and has the sense of a solitary exploration removed from the buzz of civilization in the middle of the isle. The symphony of the stirring sea around the jagged rocks - paired with the restorative salty air - creates a combination to soothe the soul.
MY TOP TIPS FOR NEWCOMERS… Yoga is a spacious and welcoming practice, however it can often induce fear and intimidation in newcomers. Perhaps the hardest part is relinquishing the notion that you need to be a certain body type, gender or age to come to class. I have been privileged to teach young adults, athletes, octogenarians and someone recovering from a serious neurological affliction. Much of yoga’s healing power is in the transformation of the mind, nourishing self-assurance and acceptance, and shifting focus. We all experience anxiety, stress or depression as part of the spectrum of human emotion. The practice of yoga helps us to override these emotional challenges and become at ease in our body, then the mind follows.

POOL ROAD A peaceful walk that circles the Great Pool. It’s quite unique to find a non-coastal path route in Scilly, which is why I enjoy the diversity of this inland trail. Any immersion in nature helps us align with the wider scope of yoga, which is discovering our authentic nature and connection to the world. PENTLE BAY You can find the sweeping sands and calm shallows of Pentle Bay on the quieter side of the island. The miniature eastern isles on the horizon evoke a sense of simplicity. A beautiful place for mindful meditation as if absorbed in the scene of an oil painting.

THE BEAUTY OF THE ISLAND IS THAT EVERY DAY IS DIFFERENT… And so is my journey to class on Tresco. Living by the rhythm of the tides means that sometimes I’m paddling the shallows between Bryher and Tresco in sunshine and stillness; and other times, cycling up the majestic Abbey Drive under the shelter of the trees in blustery winds. Ultimately, Tresco is incredibly atmospheric and offers an experience of affinity with nature. The east coast has panoramic views of the

“For decades, the Tresco community has been passionate about the local environment,” says Diana. “After all, it’s what makes Tresco so precious and unique. It’s something Robert Dorrien-Smith has always cared deeply about, and the whole island community gets behind the effort. In a world where we are recognising the

It’s a hive of natural and historical landmarks, and in order for it to stay that way, it requires mindful maintenance from the people living, working and staying on the island. Tresco Stores & Deli banished the use of plastic bags over 12 years ago and the island’s restaurants discarded plastic straws three years ago. Because Tresco is a Special Conservation Area, and is globally recognised for its natural beauty, it is important to, not only be mindful of, but to actively fight to stop climate change. “Nowhere on Scilly is higher than 44m above sea level,” explains Diana. “So, as you can imagine, we are much more vulnerable to climate change - but as a community, we have the power to make a change. “The great thing about Tresco is that we have complete control over things like our waste processing, so we can make big changes relatively quickly.” The sheer beauty of the island’s landscape is what attracts visitors year-on-year. I am also part of the team delivering the new heliport project, as
won the battle in 2018 and received a grant to build our waste processing shed, where we recycle materials and store our waste machinery - including our new biodigester.” This vital new piece of equipment will reduce the island’s food waste volume by 80%, transforming it into safe, compostable material which can be used as fertiliser in the Abbey Garden and woodland areas. “Everything goes in here… meat, vegetables all kinds of food waste. It is collected from the recycling stores scattered across the island, then it is put in the machine and cooked for 24 hours, where it is broken down into a soil enhancer. “We keep it at over 70 degrees for around 48 hours so all of the bacteria is killed off. What is so great about this machine is that it cuts our waste down massively. 24% of our collected waste is food waste, so instead of having tonnes and tonnes of it rotting in bin bags, you’ve got this nutrient-rich soil enhancer that can actually benefit our surroundings.

The island expects to save around 160 tonnes of methane gas per annum, meaning we can have a very direct positive impact on the environment. “In addition to food waste, we collect cooking oil, which is shipped to the mainland to be made into bio-diesel. We’re constantly working to reduce our plastic use, but what remains goes on to a waste-to-energy plant, so it doesn’t go to landfill.” Other ways in which the island is actively reducing its carbon fooprint is with electric vehicles and hands-on charity work. From the carbon negative heliport terminal at Penzance - which will help to offset the environmental impact of travel - to the electric shuttle buses at both sites and the new carbon fibre-based AW139 helicopter, the service has been set up in a really innovative way. “The new service is going to make a huge difference, reinvigorating short breaks and day-trips, as well as easy, year-round access to Tresco. Making it as environmentally friendly as possible is wonderful,” Diana adds. Another way in which Tresco contributes to the environment is through continued charity work. The island is one of the core funders of the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust and is always looking for creative new ways to support the charity. Recent initiatives include the first guided low tide wildlife walk between Tresco and Bryher, with plenty more in the pipeline for 2020 and beyond. “Tresco is a very special place, and it faces unique challenges when it comes to managing waste, recycling and transport links,” says Diana. “But a lot of thought and consideration goes into everything we do, and we’re proud of how we’re protecting our environment. “We know there is still a lot of work to be done, but we are constantly making progress, and it is very rewarding to see direct positive changes across the island.”

Inside, a maritime mood board is effortlessly mixed with modern furnishings and fabrics, with its very own Tresco wallpaper as a major talking point. Think open-plan living, plenty of entertaining space and beautiful, breezy designs everywhere you turn. Tania Streeter, interior designer at Amelia McNeil, was the brains behind the look and feel of the place. “Adam Dorrien-Smith had seen some of my work at Amelia McNeil,” says Tania. “We joined forces and created a mood board for Seabreeze. The client brief was based on casual and flexible open plan living – with the Tresco coastline as the main inspiration. “It was important to retain the cosy and charming feel of many of Tresco’s cottages – but with contemporary design features running through,” she adds. Throughout the project, Tania’s inspiration was sitting right in front of her. “There’s something oh-so magical about seawater – it makes you feel

supercharged. And with that in your eyeline, there’s so much you can do to make use of the space and views,” she says. “As you can imagine, spending time on the island triggered lots of inspiration, and the mood board came together quite effortlessly. “A statement table with poured resin and shells running through the middle of it stands centre stage in the kitchen-diner. To achieve this I worked with Richard Becher, a very talented furniture designer. Shells were gathered from the beaches of Tresco by Lucy Dorrien-Smith, along with a bag of sand. These components were then sent to Richard, who brought the vision to life. It is now one of the cottage’s main talking points and forms the heart of the home.” Other highlights inside include the Tresco-themed wallpaper by Hugo Dalton. Hugo’s creations stem from life drawings using pencil, bridging the gap between conceptual and applied art, taking the natural beauty of a landscape and transforming it into a familiar pattern. The clarity and calmness of Tresco and the surrounding Scilly islands have been a source of inspiration for Hugo for some time, so working

on the Seabreeze project seemed like the perfect partnership for Tania. “Hugo’s wallpaper was one of the first things I ear-marked for the house,” she says. “I used the Lighthouse Palm Chelsea Green in the downstairs WC. Paired with bold, brass fittings – it looks great. I used Archipelago Tide for the upstairs landing and staircase – a beautiful abstract design encompassing island silhouettes surrounded by gently rippling water. It’s wonderfully serene and works really well with the huge window at the top of the landing looking out to sea.” Another important aspect of design in Seabreeze was the use of natural light – and carefully considering the artificial light used inside.

“The light on Tresco is ever so special – and it was important that the house reflected it in the best way possible,” says Tania. “I had seen work by Lucy Martin, founder of LightFantastic, in Quo Vadis and Barrafina in Soho and absolutely loved it. “Her lighting design is subtle and effective – and just works wonderfully in the big, breezy open spaces at Seabreeze. “When I found out her favourite place to holiday was Tresco, I just knew she would understand the project and deliver.” The wooden staircase is another design feature with a nautical nod. Its pristine beams bend round the big landing window looking out over the beach.

“Seabreeze was a fantastic project to work on because suppliers were singing from the same hymn sheet,” says Tania. “Nick at Llewellyn Harker Lowe designed the staircase. It looks great from every angle and its open treads and vertical oak banisters play around with the light to create some great shadows and shards of light. “This was something Lucy at LightFantastic was able to pick up on and work with.” Seabreeze effortlessly blends the inside with the outside spaces. Bi-fold doors in the open-plan living space lead out to the al-fresco dining deck and entertaining areas can be found around the firepit and in the garden itself. It’s a garden that perfectly represents life on Tresco. Calm, colourful and captivating. “The garden is a serene sanctuary of its own,” Tania smiles. “The planting was designed by Abbey Garden Curator, Mike Nelhams – as it was important to bring some of the unique plants that grow on Tresco into the grounds. “The garden also boasts an outside kitchen with a fridge, sink and BBQ.

It was built using granite boulders and a huge piece of Cornish slate for the worktop. “There is also a courtyard garden tucked away and designed as an outdoor yoga studio, complete with hidden rock speakers and bespoke shell art by Lucy Dorrien-Smith. “At the back of the garden is a firepit, perfect for after dinner drinks in the summer months. There are additional seating areas in the front garden, where guests can enjoy an early evening tipple as the twilight colours cast their glow across the Eastern Isles on the horizon.” Tania’s tasteful designs – paired with the property’s breathtaking views of the beach, seascape and beyond – make for the ultimate cottage getaway on Tresco.

Research into the benefits of cold water swimming has found it has major health benefits both physically and mentally. It’s a fantastic opportunity to explore the natural world around us, boost our immune systems and combat mental health issues. For Olympians, world-leading coaches and husband and wife team, Keri-anne and David, the blissful open waters of Tresco make the perfect base for retreats. This year, for the first time, Keri-anne is bringing the unique Triscape experience to the island. A fantastic opportunity to join a swimming treat, with an introduction to working in cold water. “We’ve been in conversation with the team on Tresco for some time now,” says Keri-anne. “We tend to host our retreats in various locations across the Caribbean, but to be able to bring Triscape to the UK is very exciting for us,” she adds. “Tresco and Triscape have similar values – something totally different to anything else out there. A truly unique experience… and the whole island ethos seems to be the perfect fit for what we’re offering.” Swimming has always been a big part of Keri-anne’s life, and it’s the very sport that led her to her husband and business partner, David. Keri-anne is a two-time World 10km Open Water champion and Olympic silver medallist, and David charted his success as a two-time Commonwealth Champion, who also represented Great Britain

in the Olympics. After retiring from competitive sport, the couple were seeking out ways in which they could work together – incorporating travel, swimming and a brand new challenge. “With us both coming from similar career backgrounds, we wanted to continue doing what we love, but we also wanted to travel and meet new people along the way. “It took a bit of brainstorming, and eventually we came up with the idea of Triscape. It escalated quite quickly and our passion soon became a platform to teach others about the health benefits of open water swimming. “The business is based on setting new goals and challenges, and accomplishing them. Whether we’re coaching someone who can’t swim at all, someone who wants to improve and work on their technique, or someone looking to take the plunge and take on open water swimming, whatever their journey is, we are here to help regardless of age and ability.” Open water swimming is not a new phenomenon, but in recent years there has been extensive research into the sport’s physical and mental health benefits – and it’s something the Triscape team are keen to share with the world. “I was born in South Africa and growing up, open water swimming was

a normal thing – it just wasn’t labelled as ‘open water swimming’, it’s just what we did. “It wasn’t until I was about 18 when I started competing in open water races. Up until then, I had been racing in the pool. In 2008, I took part in the 10km open water event in the Beijing Summer Olympics. I came out with a silver medal and I’ve never looked backed since, going on to take part in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, as well as several other championships.” Now, more and more people are looking to new activities such as open water swimming to improve their lifestyle in more ways than one. “Swimming is a full body workout,” says Keri-anne. “Water is really soft on your joints, so it’s great for those with injuries or restrictions. It also boosts the cardiovascular system and helps to get fitness levels up. “Open water swimming, in particular, is great for mentality. Water is really calming and is the perfect tool for those suffering with any form of anxiety or stress. Cold water swimming encourages movement as it shocks the mitochondria in your body, finding viruses before trying to clear them out. “People who swim in cold water on a regular basis, are finding they are not getting ill as often.” The retreats delivered by Triscape focus on all aspects of fitness, health

strength, but in actual fact, areas for improvement can often be found in the breath.” After tackling breath, the retreat will include pool sessions for technique training, as well as open water sessions to help build confidence. “We also run what we call a ‘sea safari’, where we go for a swim and explore what is living amongst us. It’s just a bit of fun. “We’re hoping to get some local experts involved, so we can find the best spots for wildlife.” Tresco Triscape guests will enjoy plenty of open water swimming sessions with expert guidance throughout, where Keri-anne will work with individuals to set goals for during and post-retreat. “It’s important that we get to know our Triscape team ahead of the retreat,” says Keri-anne. “It’s a great opportunity for us to, not only chat through the itinerary, but also pin down any worries or anxieties people might have. “We follow this up with one-to-one sessions during the retreat, as well as follow-up phone calls to see how people are getting on post-retreat.” With professional guidance throughout and onward coaching if required, the Triscape experience is an incredible unique and valuable one. Whatever your goal may be, it’s sure to clear the mind, strengthen the body and enlighten the soul. With more and more people setting new goals and seeking out interest holidays, Triscape’s swimming retreats make for the perfect challenge. “Not only will you get to experience this beautiful island, but you’ll also come away having learned the skills to become a more efficient swimmer; and with more efficiency comes the ability to take on new challenges.”

and wellbeing, and are often tweaked to best suit the location. “Tresco is a really beautiful, calming place, and getting out in those big open waters can bring real tranquility,” says Keri-anne. “It presents a unique opportunity for a bit of ‘me time’. The water rushes past your ears and you kind of just lose yourself in the moment. “This retreat is all about unique experiences. Getting out in the open water is a pretty rare experience in itself, but what is also unique is the island itself - and we’re going to make the most of that. Sometimes on retreat, we may be restricted to an all-inclusive resort, whereas here, we’ll be really getting to grips with life on the glittering shores of the Isles of Scilly.” So what exactly will the Triscape retreat cover? Sometimes it’s important to get back to basics, Keri-anne tells us. “The first sessions are always about breathing. It sounds incredibly straightforward, but there’s certainly an art to it, and it’s actually one of the things confident swimmers realise they’re getting wrong. “Some people come with a focus on getting faster and improving

High flyer The new Penzance Helicopters service is flying the flag as the gateway to Tresco
A trip to Tresco is something of an adventure – but not only because of its wildlife, crystal clear waters and exotic gardens – the journey calls for adventure too. A Tresco escape covers air, land and sea – and with the arrival of the Penzance Helicopter service, accessing the island has never been easier. The Penzance to Tresco route holds a special place in the hearts of many islanders and regular visitors. For many, it’s their first memory of arriving on the paradise island - swiftly soaring over Mount’s Bay, Wolf Rock Lighthouse and the idyllic Isles of Scilly, touching down on Tresco in style. After servicing the route from Penzance to Tresco for half a century, the final helicopter flight took place in 2012; but with a great deal of determination on the part of islanders, visitors and friends of Scilly and support from ERDF funding - the service will reinstate a direct link between Tresco and the mainland. The new service comes with a state-of-the-art AW139 helicopter and an incredibly well-connected heliport at Penzance. As of March 2020, guests will be able to arrive at Penzance Heliport – right off the A30 with 270 on-site parking spaces, or take the electric

shuttle bus to make the one mile journey to Penzance railway station before hopping aboard the AW139 for a speedy trip over the water. This is the only direct service to Tresco, offering a year-round, weather-resilient link with comfort and style in mind. Tresco travel is made easy with this sleek new travel operation delivered by Sloane Helicopters. A 12-seater service with up to 17 flights scheduled per day, six days a week, will open up new and exciting opportunities for islanders, day-trippers and those checking in for longer breaks. There’s something so very special about arriving in the new AW139. As guests take off from mainland England, they will see the white sand beaches and turquoise blue waters shimmering in the distance as the flight approaches Tresco. Tresco is a unique destination to say the least; made even more remarkable with the arrival of this refined, new service from Penzance Heliport. Justin Wood, Penzance Helicopters been working ever since to bring it back to life – so in that sense, it’s very rewarding – and will hopefully form an iconic part of Tresco’s aviation history.
WHAT TRIGGERED THE RELAUNCH? The project to reestablish the helicopter link rests on the desire to maximise the reliability and weather resilience of the air link between Scilly and the mainland. A great deal of effort went into the search for the ideal mainland location for the heliport and Penzance wins hands down. The new heliport is virtually at sea level, which counters the disruption inherent with any Cornish cliff-top location when there is low cloud. It is conveniently located from a road and rail connection point of view, at the sheltered top of Mounts Bay, which confers significant weather advantages. There is simply no better location for the link to Scilly.
WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE AW139?
HOW DID YOU KICKSTART YOUR AVIATION CAREER? I first flew solo on a Royal Navy Flying Scholarship when I was 17. I then went on to become a naval aviator in the Fleet Air Arm, flying Sea King and Lynx helicopters, before joining my first front-line squadron in 1984.
The 139 is fast, powerful and great fun to fly! I have flown many helicopters professionally over my 36-years in aviation and I can honestly say the AW139 is the best one yet. It cruises with a full load at about 160mph, so it is significantly faster than the old S61, and it is a smooth ride. Passengers will also enjoy the excellent visibility from the cabin. There’s nothing better than getting a glimpse of the island as we fly in.
WHAT WILL THE NEW SERVICE BRING TO TRESCO? HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE A PART OF THE RELAUNCH OF THIS ICONIC ROUTE? In a word, terrific! After leaving the Navy in 2001, I flew the Sikorsky S61 helicopter on the Penzance-Scilly route until the last day of the old service on 31 October 2012. Following that, I almost immediately joined the team working to recreate a helicopter link. Anyone who knew and loved the previous service would consider it a huge privilege to return to this route with Sloane Helicopters, and I consider myself extremely lucky to play a part in bringing back a scheduled helicopter service to Scilly.
WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT TRESCO’S AVIATION HISTORY? Tresco actually has a historic link with maritime aviation. During the First World War, flying-boats operated from RNAS Tresco - hence the ‘Flying Boat cottages’, which were built on the same site. Fast-forward over 100 years, the flying-boat legacy lives on and aviation still remains a key player for Tresco and the Scilly Isles. I flew for 11 years on the old service. It was a wonderful experience and a number of colleagues and regular passengers became life-long friends. The previous company decided to focus on other aspects of their business, but there was a huge market for the service, and we’ve
4 4 | T R E S C O. C O. U K
This resilient new service will operate to both St Mary’s and Tresco, but we know that the return of a direct link to Tresco will appeal to ‘day-trip’ passengers visiting the Abbey Gardens or the island in general. Those staying on Tresco or Bryher will also have a simpler, more comfortable journey to and from the islands all year round; and I am sure there will be a growth in visitor numbers as a result.
HOW WILL YOU BE CELEBRATING THE LAUNCH? The service launches on 17 March. In due course we will be hosting open days to give first-time and longstanding passengers the opportunity to find out more about the new service, and to thank everyone that has made this service a reality. Personally, I’ll be raising a glass of Cornish ale once I’m off duty!
FIRST FLIGHT? Our first scheduled flight will be operating on the morning of Tuesday 17 March 2020.

AT THE HELM
James Jones, Head Chef at Ruin Beach Café
Laid-back Scilly vibes meet modern Mediterranean flavours at the wonderfully rustic Ruin Beach Café, where James Jones heads up the kitchen THE SOUTH WEST HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PART OF MY DNA… I’ve always worked in hotels in the South West. I was in Cornwall before I made Tresco home three years ago. When I took the job, I had no idea how to get here. In the end it took me eight hours on the freight boat something I now realise is far from a regular occurrence, but was certainly an adventure!
I MADE MY STAMP BY… Gradually changing the menu and experimenting with produce and recipes. Island life requires lots of flexibility and creativity – particularly in the kitchens. You have to be clever with ingredients as deliveries do not come thick and fast on a daily basis, as they might in other situations.
THE LAID-BACK, BEACH VIBE IS EVIDENT IN EVERYTHING FROM THE DISHES TO THE DECOR… The Ruin is a place you can stumble into straight from the beach, kick off your flip-flops and indulge – whether that’s with a colourful cocktail, a salad bowl in the sun or a pizza party with friends as the sun sets over Tresco.
OUR PRODUCE IS FRESH, FEEL-GOOD AND WE FIND MUCH OF IT HERE ON THE ISLES OF SCILLY… We get as much as we can from Bryher when it comes to fruit, veg and seafood such as crab and lobster. We also source what we can from our very own Abbey Garden - pumpkins, courgettes, rocket, parsley and what have you.
WHEN I’M NOT WORKING IN THE RUIN KITCHEN… I like to fully embrace life on Tresco. The Low Tide Events in the spring and summer months is a great thing to get involved in. You’ll often find me out in the channel in my chef whites, shorts and wellies. Sometimes we’ll cater for celebrations, barbecues and private parties too; and in the school holidays we’ll host pizza-making workshops and handson activities for the kids.
FAMILY TIME MEANS… WE DON’T TAKE OURSELVES TOO SERIOUSLY AT THE RUIN… We champion ourselves on creating laid-back, sharing dishes for sociable dining – with a touch of Mediterranean style. Guests can expect platters, pizzas, English classics and seafood specialities such as the crab linguine – a real crowd favourite.
Beach days! We always make an effort to enjoy our fantastic surroundings, and I guess I get to enjoy that in the workplace too – the Ruin is in an enviable location. We’re very lucky with the climate throughout the seasons here, so as a family we like to spend much of our free time out in the garden or exploring the other islands.

INGREDIENTS
METHOD
4 mackerel fillets 2 brioche burger buns A large handful of rocket 2 tbsp mayonnaise 1 tbsp horseradish sauce 1 large cooked red beetroot, diced 1 tbsp crème fraiche Small bunch chives, finely chopped 1/2 lemon
1. Make the beetroot relish by combining beetroot, chives, juice from the half lemon and crème fraiche in a small bowl and set aside
Drizzle of rapeseed oil Salt and pepper to season
2. In a separate bowl, combine horseradish and mayonnaise, also setting aside for later 3. Lightly oil and season the mackerel fillets - grill skin side up for approximately 3-4 minutes (depending on the size of your fish) until lightly golden 4. Toast brioche buns 5. Spread the bottom bun with beetroot relish and the top bun with the horseradish mayonnaise 6. Stack mackerel fillets, rocket and sandwich buns together to create your burger 7. Serve and enjoy
James’ top mackerel tips We use fresh, locally-sourced mackerel from Newlyn in west Cornwall. It’s at its best and most prolific between April and October. A bright eye and shiny skin is a sign of freshness – a really fresh mackerel won’t droop if held horizontally. Mackerel has been awarded sustainability certification, meaning it’s an ethical choice. A V-cut fillet makes it much easier to remove the spine.

A gin thing Westward Farm, Tresco Abbey Garden Gin, St Agnes, Isles of Scilly, 40% vol, 35cl Our Tresco Abbey Garden gin is inspired by the diverse array of beautiful plants found in the sub-tropical island gardens. We worked closely with Westward Farm to select aromatic and exotic species and distilling them alongside more conventional gin botanicals. The hero ingredient is the tiny, fragrant foliage of the handsome South African confetti bush, Coleonema - delivering lingering savouring notes of pine and citrus, both unique and delicious. The result is a sophisticated and complex gin, perfect in a Martini or with tonic.

- and to be able to step outside and the same lifestyle applies, is very unique.” ila is the Sanskrit word for earth, and the ancient earth is at the very heart of the brand. Every product and therapy on the treatment list is centred on ancient yogic techniques. ila rediscovers this early knowledge and embraces it in a contemporary way that remains true today. With ila comes the promise of purity. Each and every ingredient, process and blend is what ila calls, ‘beyond organic’ - with a story to tell at every stage of plant or mineral-based production. “ila products are sourced from all over the world,” says Hannah. “The founder, Denise Leicester, works with tribes in the Amazon Rainforest to develop the products. Argan oil is sourced from Morocco, Himalayan salt crystals come from Kashmir and blending is done by
hand in the Cotswolds.” From soil to skin, ila goes to great lengths to retain its purity. This, in turn, facilitates a channel of flow as natural healing energy runs through the body. “The reason we have always stayed with ila is because they’re completely organic - their philosophy is on health and wellbeing, rather than being merely results driven, which ties in really nicely with the island and the whole feel of the place. “People can come in, enjoy a good-for-thesoul treatment and go away feeling fully refreshed. It’s as simple as that. There is no reason to over-complicate things.” ila is an English brand based in the Cotswolds. Its main focus is on natural ingredients, chakras and energies. It delves a little deeper into the wellness experience. “One of our most popular treatments is the ila Kundalini Back Therapy,” says Hannah.

“It’s a chakra healing treatment, so it embodies everything ila represents. It works with each individual chakra to rejuvenate and rebalance the body.” It is exactly what it says on the treatment list - ‘ideal for emotionally exhausted souls’. The perfect treat for those escaping to Scilly. “It’s a back therapy treatment that works to rebalance the energies; a great opportunity to really switch off, and that’s what we’re about and what ila is about.” The Warm Bamboo Massage is another
comfort of their own home or cottage. The Glowing Radiance range is based on the purest India Rose Otto - an essential oil sourced from a working family in the foothills of the Himalayas. “Here we found Pawan and his family, who have been growing and distilling roses for many generations,” says founder, Denise Leicester. The range is made up of body creams, face oils, face scrubs and bath oils, and is truly rejuvenating thanks to its anti-oxidant
favourite full-body ritual. “This one uses bamboo canes to stretch the muscles,” says Hannah. “It’s quite a firm pressure - a completely different treatment to the Kundalini, but it’s great for anyone taking part in sport. “We have some sport and wellness retreats taking place on-island now, so I’m sure this treatment will become very popular amongst those visitors.” The spa offers a whole host of unique ila treatments as well as best-selling products available for guests to buy and try in the
rich argan oil, helping skin cells revitalise, creating a glowing complexion. Other ila client favourites include the Renewed Recovery collection - a sustainable blend of bioactive Amazonian plant extracts and one of nature’s purest and most concentrated harvests of health. “We are so lucky to be working with ila. Its ethos and values are similar to our own - and its our job to ensure our clients’ spa experiences marry up with their overall Tresco experience. Peace, tranquillity and a taste of what nature has to offer.”

Planting for success Tresco Abbey Garden is a magnet for those in search of some of the most unique natural beauty in the UK; and with thousands of visitors strolling through the grounds every year, there’s plenty to keep the garden team busy. A team who, with the help of scholarship students, can ensure the gardens bask in their glory all-year-round. “The scholarship is so valuable to us,” says Abbey Garden Curator and head of the scholarship scheme, Mike Nelhams. “We couldn’t work without the students, they’re integral to the team.” The scholarship dates right back to the early 70s when, after Studley Horticulture and Agricultural College for Women closed, its money was put into a fund shared out for agricultural, horticultural and veterinary

scholarships. One of those scholarships was set up specifically for Tresco. “I was the second student to take part in the Tresco scholarship,” says Mike. “It was in 1976 - and from then on, we continued with one scholarship per year. I came back to run the gardens in 1984 and because the scholarship was so important to me and my growth, I upped the game, bringing in more students and opening up new opportunities.” Today, as the garden continues to grow, so does the scholarship, with three budding gardeners joining the team each autumn for a year-long placement. “It’s great that we can use Tresco’s name to help point aspiring gardeners in the right direction,” says Mike.

Tresco Abbey Garden is home to exotic plants from all over of the globe, but it is also home to horticulture students putting down their roots and blossoming in the world of botanics “Different students come in at different stages, there’s no entry level expectation here. “This garden is unique - there’s nothing like it growing outside in Britain, and so - like the garden itself - we like to see great variety in our students. Every individual brings something different to the Abbey Garden, and that’s really important. “Right now, we have Harriet, Emma and Louise. “Harriet came to us from Duchy College for some practical work experience. We saw something in Harriet, so we asked her to apply for the scholarship. She is in the early stages of her horticultural career, whereas Emma and Louise have both worked a little bit further up the ladder.
“Louise has been at Cambridge University Botanic Garden and Emma has been at Oxford University Botanic Garden - and so they will gain something completely different to what Harriet might learn from the experience.” What makes the Abbey Garden scholarship so unique is the environment in which the students are working. It’s a fantastic opportunity to delve deeper into horticulture, working with unfamiliar plants and a completely different climate. “Because of our exotic plant range, students will pick up a lot of knowledge on the Mediterranean climate zone. They won’t find that anywhere else in Britain. Students can then take this experience and go overseas. It is an incredibly valuable understanding of the natural world.

"We are in a very special place, in a very special garden on a very special island - and we never lose sight of that"
“As well as hands-on experience in the gardens, we occasionally take field trips to various locations in Europe, where we can pick up further knowledge to complement this garden. “At the end of the year, I’d love to think that we can send our students to any garden in the world and they could fit in and be useful in a practical sense.” Tresco’s horticultural draw doesn’t stop there. The Abbey Garden is known worldwide and has, over the years, been linking up with organisations across the globe. “We have international students who join us in the winter months from America, Sweden and Italy. “And through those relationships, we are linking up with gardens overseas. For instance, we are working with a garden in Morocco, where we will have international students joining us. It is linked to supporting the ‘women in horticulture’ initiative and language development, too. We have a lot of contacts internationally, because of who we are. “We are in a very special place, in a very special garden, on a very special island - and we never lose sight of that.” The garden itself is a year-round operation. Because of Tresco’s subtropical climate, the garden grows throughout the seasons, so there’s

no downtime for Mike and his team. “The garden is always evolving. In 1987 we lost 80% of the garden due to snow and ice, so we had to redevelop. “But generally, the garden is evergreen - it’s warm throughout the year, so there’s always something to keep us busy. “Even if it’s not hot and sunny, it’s enough to keep the plants growing, so we never really slow down, unlike many gardens on the mainland.” For students, the scholarship is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience in a very busy, bustling and blooming environment. It’s like nowhere else in the UK, and presents plenty of opportunities for networking in the horticultural world, as well as picking up new knowledge and getting to grips with island life on Tresco. “Horticulture is huge,” says Mike. “The opportunities are endless for our students when they come to the end of their scholarship here, and we do all we can to point them in the right direction. “You’ve got journalism, you’ve got landscape design, you’ve got scientific horticulture… there are tons of opportunities out there. “But what comes first is the passion - and that’s something all of our students have, which is wonderful.”

“I was working as an apprentice on a private estate in Cornwall called Trelonk, and went to Duchy College Rosewarne on a Friday. Through college, I undertook a week’s placement on Tresco, and I loved it so much that I fast-tracked my apprenticeship so that I could come back for the Abbey Garden scholarship. I’m loving getting a feel for island life and learning all there is to know about what grows here on Tresco. After the scholarship, I hope to apply to the Royal Horticultural Society and continue my training.”
“Emma and I went to the same art college. I studied landscape architecture, which eventually opened up opportunities overseas, taking me Holland, where I did a masters degree. Gardening started out as a hobby, but it consumed my life and I couldn’t get enough of it; so I volunteered at Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam for a while, which was my way in. I came back to the UK, started at Cambridge University Botanic Garden and got to the point where I thought, ‘ok, I think I can garden pretty well, but it’s time to learn more about the plants’. So I’m here to broaden my horizons and learn something new.”
“I am a career changer. I originally went to art college, where I studied for five years before moving into horticulture, where I undertook a foundation degree at the University of Ulster, Greenmount Campus in Northern Ireland. Last year, I started at Oxford University Botanic Garden, where I was part of the Historic and Botanical Garden training programme, before applying for the Tresco scholarship. It has been fascinating exploring the Abbey Garden’s unique landscape. I’m learning something new everyday, which is great for my development.”

NAME: Aeonium atropurpureum ORIGIN: Canary Islands A purple succulent from the Canaries - noticeable due to its colouring and architectural quality. Excellent as a houseplant on a sunny window sill. NAME: Agave ferox ORIGIN: California A desert plant that lives a solitary existence. Very architectural with ferocious spikes on the leaves.
NAME: Cupressus macrocarpa ORIGIN: California Also known as the ‘Monterey cypress tree’, it can grow up to 40 metres high and withstand salt-laden gales from the Atlantic. It forms the main windbreaks, which protect the Abbey Garden.
NAME: Araucaria excelsa ORIGIN: Norfolk Island, South Pacific A tree originally found 400 miles off the coast of Australia. It can grow up to 35 metres high and is one of Tresco's most iconic trees due to its unique original habitat in the South Pacific.
NAME: Leucadendron argenteum ORIGIN: South Africa Also known as the South African ‘silver tree’. Very frost tender and native to the Cape. This is the single most asked about plant in the garden, because of its incredibly distinct colouring.
NAME: Protea cynaroides ORIGIN: South Africa The ‘king protea’ produces the largest of all the protea flowers in the spring and early summer. It is spectacular when in flower.

Having connected with the Scilly landscape during his studies, James returns to the islands as part of Gallery Tresco’s Easter Exhibition, from 11 April 2020 I am a relative newcomer to Scilly, having been introduced to the Isles during my time studying at Falmouth University. Throughout my studies, I enjoyed annual trips to Tresco, taking part in student exhibitions held at Gallery Tresco. It was through this experience that I

found a connection between myself and Tresco. This year, having now graduated, I was lucky enough to return as an artist in residence, and from the moment I stepped off the boat, there was an immediate feeling of home, along with the anticipation of creating an inspired new body of
artwork as a professional. During my stay, I made a point of getting out and walking everyday – strolling along the coast and retracing familiar paths across the russet red north side. With a sketchbook in hand, I let the journey and the island’s natural rhythms and shapes, direct my focus. I also

CREATIVE SCILLY SHOW Thursday 14 May Tom Holland, Teresa Pemberton, Sophie Harding, Philip Naylor, Jenny Ulyatt, Ramie Leahy enjoyed the challenge of working under unpredictable weather changes. It was the subtle nuances and experiences that I would take away with me. My artistic practice is greatly influenced by being out in the landscape, making quick gestural sketches and more refined, traditional line drawings. These notes serve as a method for recording particular moments, movements and narratives; such as striations and rivulets left behind by receding tides, or a single track of footprints leading the eye up the beach. Similarly, the method of drawing and painting ‘plein air’ interests me, because it allows more time for reflection and immersion into the subject matter. I have found nature has a habit of interacting with these sketches, causing marks which I would not otherwise have come to, and influencing what is later translated in the studio. I try to evoke some sort of essence or
tangibility; combining the memory of walking through a space with the tactility of my paper and materials. On Tresco, a place so rich in colour, history and dynamism, there was no shortage of energy or inspiration for me to create. Being on the island during the winter months was also quite poignant because of the island’s rawness. The romanticised idea of the artist exposed to the elements trying to capture the impossible sublime entered my thoughts as I found myself - on more than one occasion - seeking refuge from the wind. This made my evening returns to a firewarmed cottage even more comforting. With an overflowing bank of references in my arsenal, I’m now beautifully equipped to produce work for Gallery Tresco’s Easter Exhibition. I am both humbled and excited to have reinforced the relationship between Tresco and Falmouth, and look forward to the opening of the show on 11 April 2020.
