Top Bathroom and Kitchen Trends

Welcome to the new home: bold whites, blacks and grays, open design, wired to meet almost any technological need. Kitchens are becoming as livable and as much of a social hub as the family living room. Bathrooms are technological wonders of luxury and efficiency. Your new dream home awaits and can include the top kitchen and bathroom remodeling trends of 2013-2014. TOP KITCHEN TRENDS With today’s modern family spending more time in the kitchen, many families find that this is the congregating area where they tend to spend the most time together. Here are some of the most popular upgrades homeowners have on their must-have list when remodeling their kitchen. OPEN CONCEPT The kitchen is the true hub of almost any home. As such, the kitchen is opening up and is getting more integrated with the rest of the house. Homeowners want to socialize while cooking and serving instead of being cut off from everyone else. “Our projects are total remodels that basically gut the [kitchen] and expand it into other areas that are less vital, such as formal dining rooms,” said Rodney Renner, principal with The Renner Companies in Jasper, GA. “People are doing less and less with a formal dining room. They want a nice eating space with a larger table that adjoins the kitchen and does everyday duty, as well as the Christmas and Thanksgiving dinner.” Further, more and more islands are being added to kitchens so people can
watch their kids do homework, socialize or set out food. Designers are even seeing more hardwood floors in kitchens, which are easier to make uniform with the rest of the house since the kitchen is now flowing into other areas. CREATIVE BACKSPLASHES Backsplashes are a mainstay for many kitchens. While tile mosaics are out in the kitchen, designers are seeing brick lay above stoves and some owners are opting for three-dimensional stone patterns. Glass tiles are being incorporated into backsplashes and stainless steel backsplashes are growing in popularity. Uniform, linear designs remain the most popular. For instance, John Beach, partner with Paces Construction Co., LLC in Atlanta, said small subway tiles in a running bond pattern are a popular choice right now. “3x6 white subway tiles are still very popular,” said Heather Bosseler, showroom manager with Traditions in Tile and Stone in Atlanta, GA. “They are classic and timeless for resell.” THE GREEN KITCHEN More and more homeowners are looking to reduce their impact on the environment. To make this a reality, reclaimed wood is being used to create countertops and raised bars. Many homeowners are opting to install a compost bin right into their countertops. A hole is made in the countertop and the bin fits as a drop-in. The bin itself is lined with odor protectors and a simple, flat lid is placed on top of the bin so the compost is not noticeable. Also, Randy Arndt, owner of A Legacy Homes in Atlanta,

GA, mentioned that he sees trashcan pullouts with a separate recycle pullout. TECH IN THE KITCHEN Since the kitchen is the hub of the home, more and more people are bringing their technology into the kitchen with them. Some homes incorporate special desk areas for working on a computer and others are adding charging stations into the plan by reserving the counter space and routing the correct wiring to the area. Beach commented that laptop stations in the kitchen are popular. Appliances are also smarter in today’s kitchen: convection cook tops are popular, refrigerators come with the capability to access a variety of apps like Pandora for music playing, speed cook ovens can cook food up to eight times faster. TOP BATHROOM TRENDS Homeowners are putting more effort and resources into their bathrooms than ever before. Cutting-edge technologies make the bathroom a comforting haven from the stresses of life. HIGH TECH SHOWERS Homeowners are focusing on getting the best possible showering experience, since few people have the time to enjoy a bath as much as people have in the past. “In the bathrooms we are noticing more emphasis placed on the showers as opposed to tubs,” said Blane S. Case, showroom manager with Ferguson Enterprises, Inc. in Atlanta, GA. “We are selling more soaker tubs for master baths as our clients begin to put more money into their custom showers.”
WATER CONSERVATION With water costs on the rise and concerns over water availability rising, water conservation is making its way into the center of the design process in many bathrooms. A popular product on the rise is the dual-flush toilet, which uses more or less water depending on which button is pushed. Low flush toilets are more popular, some cutting back the amount of water used by over half, from 3.5 gallons per flush to 1.28 gallons. Air-injection showers come with the ability to inject air into the water stream, reducing the amount of water used but retaining the feel of the traditional showerhead. Air is infused with the water to increase the size of the droplets, creating the feeling of getting a lot of water while in reality saving water. HEATED FLOORS While on the pricey side, heated floors are becoming more and more popular. Heated floors take away the chill of walking on a cold bathroom floor in colder months, but also warm up the entire bathroom without the added cost of increasing the heat in the rest of the house. They also come with thermostats so the floor can be set to just the right temperature when the bathroom is in use and then will shut down when the bathroom is unused. For a more costconscious approach, some homeowners opt to just add heated sheets in certain high-use areas, like in front of the sink, shower or toilet. TRENDS WORKING FOR THE KITCHEN AND BATHROOM Other choices to consider are color schemes, design styles and lighting throughout your kitchen and bath. There are endless options to choose from.
LIGHTS AND DARKS Shades of white are dominating the design scene right now. Bosseler commented that “whites, crèmes, grays and khaki” are very popular. White-faced cabinets and lighter stone countertops are huge. Designers are seeing a lot more white honed marble countertops, for example. Homeowners are attracted to the use of white as the primary design scheme because it gives the home a look that is not likely to go out of style anytime soon, as well as looking highly contemporary. As a result, polished chrome in bathrooms is back in style as a part of a sleeker, lighter and more futuristic looking home. However, many designers are still seeing dark colors, which also add a timeless appeal. Renner stated that he sees a lot of neutral wall colors with dark cabinets and black granite. Darker polished nickel in the grays, golds and browns is still chosen for its durability. It will not pit over the years like chrome can. Many homeowners are still opting for dark cabinet faces and warm wood finishes, however cherry wood is definitely out. Many designers are seeing shades of gray incorporated heavily as well, and gray islands are huge. The more distinctive colors like the reds, blues and greens in appliances are out, except for some of the highest-end appliances. Kitchen appliances still hold steady with stainless steel being the most popular, seconded by black. Overall, white, gray or darker colors are the way to go for that popular sleek and contemporary look. SLEEK STYLES Overall, design styles are trending towards the sleek and modern with a traditional feel, also known as transitional design. “Homes are more traditional in the Atlanta area. Homeowners try to keep the traditional look and give modern flavor using more glass and metal deco and liner pieces… designs are more simple and clean,” said Bosseler. Beach had a similar observation: “Design trends have gotten cleaner, i.e. less ornamentation and less formal, but more of a classical, timeless modernist look.” Further, Arndt commented that homeowners are trying for a sleek spa experience in their bathrooms. Cool colors, white marble, modern vanities and chrome fixtures are more popular. LED LIGHTING Once unappealing because of the harsh and unflattering nature of the light

Case commented that multiple showerheads are popular in the Southeast with homeowners usually incorporating a secondary showerhead to complement the broad and flat Rain Showerheads. Steam showers are also popular among a niche market. “The benefits of steam are amazing and almost any shower can be transformed into a steam shower, but the impression is that it is very expensive and hard to incorporate—it isn’t!” said Case. Also, higher-end showers now have Bluetooth compatible waterproof speakers in them so they can play music. Touch pads allow the owner full control of programmable temperature options, stream pressure and lighting.

As such, LED lighting is taking off with homeowners since it offers a great quality light for any room, while also helping homeowners cut back on energy costs due to their lowenergy usage. Also, LED produces less heat than traditional bulbs so the home stays cooler. LED lighting for under cabinets is especially popular, while LED lighting technology overall is moving at a quick speed. LED lights can now also be found in chandeliers and pendant lights, making them a versatile addition to almost any design whim. LED lights are also big in kitchens and bathrooms as recessed lights. Imagine lights in your home flashing when your dinner is done cooking, being able to increase ice production from your phone before a dinner party, getting an alert via text message when the kids left the refrigerator door open or being able to monitor and control your appliances’ energy consumption from your smartphone or tablet. This is now the reality of many households across the country thanks to smart appliances. Below are the largest manufacturers of smart appliances, LG Electronics, Whirlpool, Sub-Zero and Wolf, and GE, to help you make a smarter home your reality. LG ELECTRONICS
LG’s current line of smart technology consists of the THINQ Technology line. “With LG’s new line of appliances called Smart THINQ, LG is striving to make life ‘good’ for the consumer with its Wi-Fi connected appliances,” said Dave VanderWaal, director of brand marketing, home appliances, of LG Electronics USA. “We have incorporated technologies that make household tasks easier, quicker and more efficient, allowing families to spend less time on chores and more time together.” THINQ Technology consists of five features: Smart Grid, Smart Diagnosis, Smart Access, Smart Adapt and Food Management: Smart Grid: a meter on the home’s appliances to make sure they are using the smallest amount of energy with the least expensive rates; Smart Diagnosis: customers can resolve issues with their appliances quickly and efficiently. door left open or an off-balance washing machine. For large issues, customers can call a service line and the technician will instruct them to press a sequence of buttons to diagnose the problem, leading to faster resolution; Smart Access: allows customers to monitor their appliances remotely. Customers can keep track of their washing cycle or set the refrigerator temperature using a smartphone or tablet; Smart Adapt: allows customers to download updates for their appliances using a WiFi connection. Customers can access recipes and advanced washing cycles without having to purchase a new product; and Food Management: allows customers to check stock and expiration dates of their food by dragging and dropping icons on an LCD screen. According to VanderWaal, “Regarding additional connectivity options, the next generation line will include Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. This technology simplifies the connection between a consumer’s smartphone and the appliance, so you can easily register and share information between the devices. For example, if a consumer selects a recipe via the smartphone app, but wants it to appear on the refrigerator, it only requires a tap.” WHIRLPOOL
Whirlpool employs 6th Sense Live™ technology in their smart appliances. Bob Bergeth, General Manager Builder Sales of Whirlpool Corporation, said, “The 6th Sense Live platform allows homeowners to remotely connect to their home’s refrigerator, dishwasher and laundry pair. From that, they can track energy consumption and monitor and operate appliances from their computers and mobile devices, be it a tablet or smartphone. This connectivity makes appliances
with 6th Sense Live Technology ideal for homeowners who want greater flexibility and control of home energy consumption.” Customers can also activate specific settings away from home with the Vacation Assistant feature. Smart Nudges and Alerts can tell the customer how the product is functioning. Specifically, alerts can also notify customers when a water filter needs changing, a washing load ends and needs a fan turned on to keep it fresh or what cycle the dishwasher is on, just to name a few notifications. SUB-ZERO AND WOLF
Sub-Zero and Wolf smart appliances feature the Smart Appliance App and Smart Appliance Module to integrate with the Control4® wireless home control system. For instance, the system “can notify parents when the fridge is open by sending messages if it’s open longer than 90 seconds, say. There are messages to know when to change fridge filter- email, texts, etc.,” said Paul Williams, vice president of security & communications products/support services with Control4. Lights also can flash, music can play or a text message can be sent when internal sensors detect food is finished cooking. “Now instead of having to babysit, I can just take the meat out of the oven,” said Williams. The Smart Appliance App allows customers to receive notifications for instances like when the oven is done preheating or what the current oven temperature is. The app can also be set to lower the refrigerator’s energy consumption during daytime, set to an energy-saving vacation mode or set to increase ice before entertaining, to name a few features. General service requests can be sent via the Control4 System and customers can be notified when there is a problem with an appliance. Sub-Zero built-in refrigerator models and Wolf E wall ovens now come with aftermarket installation for the new Smart Appliance module, which will boost functionality of certain appliances when integrated with the Control4 system. GE
GE’s smart technologies focus on monitoring and controlling appliances for greater energy savings with the Brillion™ Whole-Home Energy Sensor. “We’ve leveled the playing field by providing a product that communicates a home’s continuous real-time energy consumption to consumers without a smart meter,” said William Paul, product manager,

home energy, GE Appliances. “Our new Whole-Home Sensor connects to the consumer’s electrical panel and allows them to understand their energy consumption without waiting for their electricity provider to install a smart meter.” The device pulls data from the home’s large 240-volt applications like a panel box or pool pump to the Nucleus™ energy manager, which then sends the data to the customer’s smartphone or computer. GE also has the Brillion Smart Plugs, which can be plugged into 120-volt outlets to read energy usage through the Nucleus energy manager. Also, Brillion thermostats allow customers to adjust their heating and cooling schedules remotely through their iPhone. PRODUCT RECEPTION
Since the technology is so new, smart appliances still attract a smaller segment of overall buyers in the market. Sellers liken them to hi-definition televisions, where eventually the technology will take off in homes as customers become more educated and prices become more accessible. Sarah Hammond, showroom consultant of Ferguson Enterprises, Inc. in Atlanta, GA, said, “Customers who are genuinely interested in these products are looking for the latest and greatest in gadgets and/or want products to help them save time in the kitchen… Currently, I would say [smart appliance features] are a leisure, but eventually they will become a standard expectation for new models.”

Setting Your Expectations No matter where you are in the building or the home remodeling process, it’s important that you set your expectations for your soon-to-be-built or remodeled home, as well as for the professionals you are or will be working with. Although it’s best to lay out your needs, wants and goals before you get started, it’s never too late to clarify them. According to the Metropolitan Atlanta Consumer Confidence Survey as well as the Atlanta Housing Economic Trends, now is a good time to build or remodel your home, as consumers are much more confident in the state of the economy compared to their opinions a year ago.
BUILD VS. REMODEL?
Even though you may prefer to sell your existing home rather than upgrade, that’s not always an option. Before you make a final decision on whether to sell and move, or remodel, it’s advisable to determine the availability of homes for sale. Recently home prices have been rising and in some cases, there is a shortage of homes for sale. Although there may be homes for sale in your area, there may not be enough homes with the features that you are looking for. Even if you do decide to buy another house, you may still choose to remodel. This is where setting your expectations comes in. DO YOUR HOMEWORK
In setting your expectations there are a number of factors to look at. Most of these factors entail doing some homework. Depending on your needs and wants, this homework can be relatively simple and straight forward, or much more complex. Just keep in mind that the more prepared you are, the better the outcome will be. As Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Your homework can and most likely will entail research on a number of aspects associated with your home itself. This research will include style and functionality, as well as many other elements associated with your remodeled home. As you find ideas that you like, you may identify some that you’ll want to avoid.

Part of your homework should also include the selection of the remodeling professionals you choose to work with. Just as it’s important to know what you want for your remodeled home, it’s equally important to know what you want in your remodeler. To ensure a positive remodeling experience, it’s essential to verify the credentials and traits of potential designers and contractors. By choosing remodelers who are members of a professional association such as the Remodelers Councils of the Home Builders Association, you will increase your chances of having a successful project. YOUR BUDGET

Equally important to your pre-planning is determining your budget for your project. Although your first choice may not be within your reach, you can often find alternatives, which may end up being the best choice for you and your family. By having a clear idea of your goals for your newly remodeled home and sharing those goals and your vision, you’ll be closer to achieving your objectives. The remodeling professionals you choose to work with can and will assist you in selecting various options to ensure that you will achieve your goals. PRIORITIZE
Even though you may not get everything you want, you can certainly end up with a wonderful project and home that you love. The key is to prioritize your needs and wants. For example, functionality may be more important to you than style. Perhaps the priorities may lie in the size of your remodel or possibly the details of the project. By creating and using a wish list of everything you and your family want for your remodeled home you will have taken the first step in determining your priorities. Modern Prairie Has Cutting-Edge

This custom modern prairie designed home exhibits a high level of craftsmanship and cutting-edge design and finishes. This originally was a spec home, where the builder—Epic Development, in Atlanta, GA—allowed for multi-generational living, providing the buyer with two master suites and laundry rooms with one on each level. The project’s site is located in Candler Park, a historic inner-city neighborhood of Atlanta. The lot is bordered by beautiful mature hardwood trees and is on a wide and level in-fill site with rear-alley access. Its location is the major amenity; the home is only one block from two parks—Candler and Iverson—two blocks from the MARTA rail, and four blocks to restaurants and Mary Lyn Elementary School. The company made sure to be sensitive to the existing development patterns and styles as well as the historic nature of the area. The homes in the two blocks surrounding the site influenced the design process. Jim LaVallee, Epic Development’s principal for marketing, says that this particular neighborhood has a unique historic presence. “It is a historic neighborhood and we wanted our home to have period significance with a modern flair. The three blocks immediately adjacent to our site was originally developed as the ‘big house’ section of Candler Park. If you look at the surrounding homes they are quite impressive in detail and character. The modern prairie style draws heavily on the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright combined with modern architectural elements and an open interior floor plan.”

The design feature that is starting to catch on across the country is the home automation system. This system allows the homeowner to control lighting, security systems with cameras, HVAC, and the entertainment system remotely via iPad or iPhone.

The general trend in Epic Development’s home design leans toward cleaner, simpler lines. This can even be seen in homes with traditional facades, yet include simpler interior molding and cabinetry. The company worked with Decatur, GA-based architect Eric Rawlings to incorporate these elements into the Candler Park home along with a multi-generational floor plan. According to Rick Bennett, Epic Development’s principal in charge of design and construction, the concept behind multigenerational living is to allow flexibility for the occupants over their entire lifetime. The two master bedrooms and two laundry rooms provide the future homebuyer with a variety of options. For example, “It’s a home that a younger family can live in and have a nice space for an elder family member or an

Furthermore, according to Jim, the lighting system is unique in that you can program the lights to come on at a certain time, become brighter or even fade. You can also program the lights to come on and go off when the garage door is activated, allowing ample lighting when arriving and leaving the premises. “The key points to address during construction are ample wiring throughout the home and a central control panel,” Jim says. “Once these are installed there are almost an unlimited number of modules the homeowner can add to the main panel.” OTHER HIGHLIGHTS OF THE HOME
Other key design elements include a covered front porch with a cypress ceiling and soffit lighting and stack stone columns and a chimney with a brick water table. The modern kitchen offers double-stacked, all-wood cabinets, granite countertops, a glass tile backsplash, Dacor stainless steel appliances—including a warming drawer, walk-in pantry and an oversized island overlooking the family room. There are hardwood floors throughout the main level that continue up the stairs to the loft area. The second level features an open loft area, a second master bedroom suite, two secondary bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a second laundry room. The home also has a detached two-car garage with access via a rear alley and oversized private backyard.

This recently remodeled home now includes two master suites while preserving the historic charm of the home. When Mille McKenzie recently moved back to her Atlanta Brookwood Hill’s childhood home, she did so to be the caregiver to her aging mother and father. Her parents had purchased this 1920s home in 1960 in a well-established, closedin neighborhood lined with beautiful oak trees. At the time, her parents believed this three-bedroom, two- and one-half bathroom house would make the ideal home for their family of five. More than 50 years later, with children living in North Georgia and Brunswick, the McKenzie’s considered moving into a more accessible dwelling, but they really loved their home and familiar neighborhood. As Mille started planning to move back into her childhood home to help care for her parents, she knew living there as an adult would require some changes for everyone. She wanted a separate in-law suite on the lower level with access to an elevator where she could assist her parents as needed, while keeping her dogs and cat out of the house—but with yard access. Her parents wanted to add a main-level master suite with handicap accessible features, and a new deck to enjoy the gardens behind their home. Her father, who uses a walker and a wheel chair, has a harder time getting around and he loves sitting outside but it was difficult for him to get there. retired architect, had updated their now historic district home several times, adding another bedroom and bath, a sunroom and expanded the den. Mille has also remodeled another home she owns. “Paces Construction had done several past projects for my parents, and hands down, they did the best work”, Mille says. “I knew John Beach, a partner in Paces Construction, when growing up in Buckhead, saw what he had done here, and trusted them to do quality work. After comparing the remodeling projects done with other companies, Paces did by far the best work. John has top-notch workers, is pleasant to work with and just does a great job. We didn’t even consider using another company for this addition.” ACCESSIBILITY IS KEY
Mille’s father had a stroke and required an elevator, which goes to all three floors in their remodeled home. While the elevator serves the original master bedroom on the top floor, this space had narrower doorways and an original bathroom with tub, and it was difficult to update due to the layout. John at Paces Construction brought in architects Norris Broyles and Candace Carlson with Norris Broyles and Associates to help design the new addition, with plenty of input from Mille and her parents. John selected Norris and Candace because he had worked on both historic and accessibility projects with them and knew they

Ultimately the plans called for adding a ground level in-law suite for Mille with a suitable bathroom, living room with kitchenette, laundry room, elevator access and sufficient storage space. Upstairs on the main level they created a brand new master bedroom and bath for her parents as well as a deck to overlook their beautifully landscaped backyard. AGING IN PLACE SPECIALISTS
As a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS), John and Paces Construction work with older clients and make sure they design items like wider doorways to accommodate future wheelchair and walker access. “On this job we also installed a minimal curb shower with seating and handheld spray, multiple grab bars, extra light switches, higher toilets and vanity, level thresholds and split doors, etc.,” John said. “Part of working with older clients is also maintaining a very low contaminant, low-VOC environment to minimize health problems, and being proactive about hazardous conditions around the jobsite.” ACCOMMODATING THE HOMEOWNER
“We worked with shift nursing staff and rest schedules, onsite meds and oxygen (critical around welding), maintained and integrated house wiring with an on-call medical alert system, elevator and lift beds, etc. Because the father was interested in our progress, but it was too dangerous for him to come into
the work areas, we set up a hi-definition camera connected to their home TV so he could watch our activity,” John said. “We also installed remote internet access to this video feed so their out-of-town son could stay abreast of the job progress.” HEALTHY CREDENTIALS
Paces Construction is an EPA Healthy Air and RRP licensed contractor to handle lead and other site contaminants, in addition to their Aging (CAPS), Certified Green (CGP), and Earthcraft credentials. John earned his Masters of Science degree in Residential Building from Georgia Tech, and believes everyone benefits from Paces healthy building expertise, not just elderly, asthmatic and medically fragile clients. According to Mille this was important to them as well. “My mother was on oxygen during construction so having minimal to no dust was critical. John and his staff put up double wall barriers to keep the dust out, installed special filters and used a big industrial air cleaner. would design an addition that would meet the varying needs of the parents, their daughter and the Atlanta historic commission.
HISTORIC AND ENERGY EFFICIENT
Paces Construction also updated the 90-plus year-old home to be much more energy efficient with extra insulation and double-pane glass in doors and windows. “While going through the area’s Historic District renovation approval process is considered a hassle by some, we like working with folks who respect their older neighborhoods and want to preserve the look and feel of these homes,” John says. “Of course, we’re still big believers in updating these houses to modern living and energy standards to meet today’s lifestyles. When I presented the architect’s plans for this addition to the Atlanta Urban Design (Historic) Commission, it was nice after the final city hall approval to have a commissioner thank me for helping preserve older Atlanta homes. He also asked me to express his gratitude to the homeowners for helping maintain the character of our great historic neighborhoods.” While working on the job John spotted a distressed original cast iron planting sink under the house. “As part of the remodel we had it refinished, built a period appropriate oak sink stand and used it in the updated basement area to help connect the new space with the old. “It is a very unique piece,” Mille said.

Overall, Mille couldn’t be happier with the outcome of the project. “Paces Construction did a fantastic job. They were so pleasant to work with and whenever I had questions or concerns, they always were very prompt with answers and resolved any issues. Building A ‘Dream Home’ in This family is currently in the process of building their ‘Dream Home’ in Provence, in Cumming, GA, and is extremely happy with the endless possibilities. Their five-bedroom, four-bathroom home will be completed in January. Neha and Rittal Amin built their first 1,800 square-foot home years ago and they really liked it—but now with two sons ages 12 and 9, their boys were complaining about not having enough space. “They wanted more space, and ideally a media room where they could keep their video games and other items they frequently used and played with. HOMEAID ATLANTA SERVES THE HOMELESS
HomeAid Atlanta recently partnered with Bank of America, the Atlanta Remodelers Council of the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association, and Pace Drywall to provide Genesis—A New Life Shelter and Community Advanced Practice Nurses (CAPN)—with much needed upgrades at their facilities serving the homeless. The building at 173 Boulevard NE, which houses both Genesis Shelter and CAPN, was recently overrun with volunteers as they worked to complete an extensive list of jobs for the three groups. Bank of America donated $4,000 to assist with materials for the event and 10 employees from the bank assisted with painting and other tasks. The Atlanta Remodelers Council was represented by 15 members and offered additional material donations for the work completed. Pace Drywall, LLC made a big donation of professional painter labor for CAPN clinic. Additional volunteers from Aycock Properties assisted as well.
Projects completed for Genesis Shelter included: purchase and install an accordion-style door to separate a classroom, install melamine storage shelving, fix an exterior storage area and fence, repair cabinetry and replace a countertop at a sink area in the dining hall, remove old cabinets in a lobby and install a Wilsonart countertop, paint a long hallway, install a door threshold, and install new tile. CAPN clinic was professionally painted by Pace Drywall, LLC, closet shelving was added, and a cracked commode was replaced. Altogether, the improvements are valued at over $10,000. HomeAid strives to double (or more) each dollar donated through additional donations of labor and materials, which was accomplished during these care days at Genesis and CAPN. The Remodelers Council Makes HomeAid Care Days a Success The Remodelers Council has worked with HomeAid Atlanta on HomeAid Care Days for the last four years. In 2012, they partnered with HomeAid and volunteers from CBRE Group, Inc. (CBRE) to make repairs and improvements at The Drake House in Roswell. The Drake House is a crisis residential assessment center for homeless women and children in the North Fulton area. The organization provides immediate residential housing combined with an empowerment program designed to provide stability for children and assist the family in working toward housing self-sufficiency. More than 30 volunteers joined HomeAid Atlanta and completed many projects for The Drake House, saving them thousands of dollars in repair and maintenance work. Dollars saved are able to be used for the programs serving homeless women and children. HomeAid Atlanta has a long history with The Drake House, providing a complete remodel of their 16 apartment units in 2006.
The HomeAid Care Day volunteers rebuilt a shed overhang, replaced fascia board on the office building, built pantry shelving, installed custom cabinets in an office, renovated the playhouse to like-new, hung shelving for the career clothes area, replaced an attic door, made a door into a French door, replaced a desk top, hung wall fans, fixed a sidewalk, removed an old ceiling fan, fixed a ceiling, cleaned and readied an apartment for a new family, painted building railings, beautified the grounds, and repaired the children’s bicycles. The work completed at no cost to The Drake House was valued at close to $8,000. The Remodelers Council, Pace Drywall, CBRE, and Bank of America are all valuable partners for HomeAid Atlanta and their continued support of HomeAid and its projects is most appreciated. Certified Experts PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS SET PROFESSIONAL BUILDERS AND REMODELERS APART
W
hen choosing a builder or remodeler, you want someone with the knowledge and expertise to do the job right. That’s why the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association offer professional designations that help consumers identify builders and remodelers who have committed themselves to continually improving their skills and bettering their profession. CERTIFIED AGING-IN-PLACE SPECIALIST (CAPS) The NAHB has joined forces with AARP and several experienced remodelers to develop the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) certification. Designees are trained to understand and respond to the unique needs of older home owners. CERTIFIED GRADUATE REMODELER (CGR) The Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) designation recognizes remodeling professionals who have a proven track record of success. You can count on remodelers who have the CGR designation to show a high level of professionalism and credibility, and those who earn it can be considered industry leaders. GRADUATE MASTER REMODELER (GMR) The Graduate Master Remodeler (GMR) designation allows Certified Graduate Remodelers (CGR) to attain further recognition for educational excellence and longevity in the remodeling industry. Qualifications include 15 years of remodeling experience.
CERTIFIED GREEN PROFESSIONAL (CGP) The Certified Green Professional designation recognizes builders, remodelers and other industry professionals who incorporate green building principles into homes without driving up the cost of construction. CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL HOME BUILDER (CPHB) The Certified Professional Home Builder program is the only voluntary builder certification program of its kind in Georgia. CPHBs have met stringent requirements including passing a building codes exam; meeting insurance requirements; having their customers surveyed annually; providing a written warranty; and having a dispute resolution process in place. EARTHCRAFT HOUSE (ECH) EarthCraft House is a building program that provides a model for healthy, comfortable homes that reduce utility bills and help protect the environment. The EarthCraft House certification process follows a checklist designed to verify that each home features an energy-efficient building envelope and systems; high-performance windows; properly sized heating and cooling equipment; and energyefficient lighting and appliances.
Code of Ethics Members of the Greater Atlanta HBA are committed to an established Code of Ethics. It reads: Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association members believe and affirm that: home ownership can and should be within the reach of every American family; American homes should be well designed, well constructed and well located in attractive communities with educational, recreational, religious and shopping facilities accessible to all; and American homes should be built under the free enterprise system. To achieve these goals, we pledge allegiance to the following principles and policies: our paramount responsibility is to our customer, our community and our country; honesty is our guiding business policy; high standards of health, safety and sanitation shall be built into every home; members shall deal fairly with their respective employees, trade contractors and suppliers; as members of a progressive industry, we encourage research to develop new materials, new building techniques and improved methods of home financing to the end that every home purchaser may get the greatest possible value for every dollar; all sound legislative proposals affecting our industry and the people we serve shall have our informed and vigorous support; we hold inviolate the free enterprise system and the American way of life; we pledge our support to our associates, our local, state and national associations and all related industries concerned with the preservation of legitimate rights and freedoms.
