Certified Experts PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS SET PROFESSIONAL BUILDERS AND REMODELERS APART When choosing a builder or remodeler, you want someone with the skill and expertise to do the job right. In a crowded marketplace, however, identifying a qualified professional can be difficult. That’s why the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) created professional designations that help consumers identify builders and remodelers who have committed themselves to continually improving their skills and being committed to their profession. When a homeowner selects a builder or remodeler with a NAHB professional designation, they are getting a professional with superior training, practical experience, and in-depth knowledge in their chosen specialty.

Certified Graduate Builder (CGB)

The CGB designation means your builder has met prescribed standards of practice, possess at least two years building industry experience, has a proven track record of successful project management, has completed a comprehensive education curriculum, and pledges to uphold the program’s Code of Ethics. The CGB course is designed to emphasize business and project management skills as the key to a professional building operation.

Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR)

The CGR course emphasizes the development of business management skills as the key to a professional remodeling operation. Remodelers holding the CGR designation meet prescribed standards of business practice, possess a minimum of five years remodeling industry experience, have a proven track record of successful remodeling projects, complete a comprehensive education curriculum, and pledge to uphold the program’s Code of Ethics.

Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) The CAPS designation program teaches the technical, business management and customer service skills essential for remodelers doing home modifications for the aging-in-place. The NAHB Remodelers Council, in collaboration with the AARP, developed this program to provide comprehensive, practical, market specific information about working with older and maturing adults to remodel their homes for aging-in-place.

Certified Graduate Associate (CGA) The CGA certificate program offers associate members an opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the fundamentals of the home building industry. Modeled after the CGB

curriculum, this designation is attained by completing three required and three elective courses which focus on improved management skills and business performance. The CGA designation is maintained by completing one course annually.

Certified Green Professional (CGP)

The National Association of Home Builders’ Certified Green Professional™ designation recognizes builders, remodelers and other industry professionals who incorporate green building principles into homes – without driving up the cost of construction. Classwork leading to the designation provides a solid background in green building methods, as well as the tools to reach customers, from the organization leading the charge to provide market-driven green building solutions to the home building industry.

Master Builder (MB) / Master Remodeler (MR)

The purpose of the Master Builder / Master Remodeler Program certification of the Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders is to further enhance the professionalism of participating members and to provide the consumer with contractors of the highest professional standards. Members of the program must pass a rigorous entry process in order to receive the designation as Master Builder or Master Remodeler. They are screened by a committee of their peers who review customer, supplier and subcontractor references; check for any current or pending litigation; verify full liability and workman’s compensation insurance coverage; and validate financial stability. Membership is reviewed on a yearly basis and failure to meet the program’s requirements can warrant disqualification from the program.

Graduate Master Builder (GMB)

The ultimate designation for the building professional, the Graduate Master Builder (GMB) designation is for experienced veterans only. Before beginning the GMB designation process, candidates must have the CGB designation, the CGR designation, the CGA designation with five years of building experience, or ten years of building experience and have completed three CGB/CGR/ CGA courses. GMB course topics include risk management and insurance, negotiating, financial management and quality construction, to name a few. They are more advanced with in-depth instruction geared for experienced building professionals.

Setting Your

By Lorraine Hart, President, Ideal Consulting Services, Inc.

Expectations No matter where you are in the home remodeling process, it’s important that you set your expectations for your remodeled home, as well as for the professionals with whom you will be working. Although it’s best to lay out your needs, wants and goals before you get started, it’s never too late to clarify them. Even though you may prefer to sell your existing home rather than upgrade, that’s not always an option. Before you make a final decision on whether to sell and move, or remodel, it’s advisable to determine the availability of homes for sale. Recently, home prices have been rising and in some cases, there is a shortage of homes for sale. Although there may be homes for sale in your area, there may not be enough homes with the features that you are looking for. Even if you do decide to buy another house, you may still choose to remodel. This is where setting your expectations come in. Do Your Homework In setting your expectations, there are a number of factors to look at. Most of these factors entail doing some homework. Depending on your needs and wants, this homework can be relatively simple and straight forward, or much more complex. Just keep in mind that the more prepared you are,

the better the outcome will be. As Benjamin Franklin said “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Your homework can and most likely will entail research on a number of aspects associated with your home itself. This research will include style and functionality, as well as many other elements associated with your remodeled home. As you find ideas that you like, you may identify some that you’ll want to avoid. Part of your homework should also include the selection of the remodeling professionals you choose to work with. Just as it’s important to know what you want for your remodeled home, it’s equally important to know what you want in your remodeler. To ensure a positive remodeling experience it’s essential to verify the credentials and traits of potential designers and contractors. By choosing remodelers who are members of a professional association such as the GBAHB, you will increase your chances of having a successful project.

Photograph courtesy of: Taylor Burton Company, Inc.

Your Budget Equally important to your pre-planning is determining your budget for your project. In addition to affordability issues, it’s important to formulate your wish list so that it falls within your comfort level. To not do so will set you up for frustration and disappointment. Although it’s not necessary, or advisable, for you to determine the detailed costs involved in your project, your remodeler will certainly need to know your budgetary constraints in order to create an appropriate proposal. Just as knowing the style and functionality you want is necessary, determining and sharing your budget with the professionals you choose to engage is important in preparing for your project. Options Even if it’s not possible to get everything you want, there are often alternative choices and options to ensure that you will be happy with your remodeled home. As you do your research, keep in mind that there are many options that will satisfy your needs and wants. Although your first choice may not be within your reach, you can often find alternatives which may end up being the best choice for you and your family. By having a clear idea of your goals for your newly remodeled home and sharing those goals and your vision, you’ll be closer to achieving your objectives. The remodeling professionals you choose to work with can and will assist you in selecting various options to ensure that you will achieve your goals.

Prioritize Even though you may not get everything you want, you can certainly end up with a wonderful project and home that you love. The key is to prioritize your needs and wants. For example, functionality may be more important to you than style. Perhaps the priorities may lie in the size of your remodel or possibly the details of the project. By creating and using a wish list of everything you and your family want for your remodeled home you will have taken the first step in determining your priorities. Just as it’s important to share your goals with your remodeler, communicating your priorities is an essential element in preparing for your remodeling project. Moving Forward By learning about the current market in your area, clarifying your expectations, researching and prioritizing your options, and determining your budget you will have taken the first necessary steps in creating a successful remodeling project. Imagine lights in your home flashing when your dinner is done cooking, being able to increase ice production from your phone before a dinner party, getting an alert via text message when the kids left the refrigerator door open or being able to monitor and control your appliances’ energy consumption from your smartphone or tablet. This is now the reality of many households across the country thanks to smart appliances. Below are the largest manufacturers of smart appliances, LG Electronics, Whirlpool, Sub-Zero and Wolf, and GE, to help you make a smarter home your reality. LG Electronics LG’s current line of smart technology consists of the THINQ Technology line. “With LG’s new line of appliances called Smart THINQ, LG is striving to make life ‘good’ for the consumer with its Wi-Fi connected appliances,” said Dave VanderWaal, director of brand marketing, home appliances, of LG Electronics USA. “We have incorporated technologies that make household tasks easier, quicker and more efficient, allowing families to spend less time on chores and more time together.” THINQ Technology consists of five features: Smart Grid, Smart Diagnosis, Smart Access, Smart Adapt and Food Management: Smart Grid: a meter on the home’s appliances to make sure they are using the smallest amount of energy with the least expensive rates; Smart Diagnosis: customers can resolve issues with their appliances quickly and efficiently. The appliance will alert the consumer on their smartphone or tablet for small issues like a door left open or an off-balance washing machine. For large issues, customers can call a service line and the technician will instruct them to press a sequence of buttons to diagnose the problem, leading to faster resolution; 14 GBAHB Remodel Birmingham • www.birminghambuilder.com

Smart Access: allows customers to monitor their appliances remotely. Customers can keep track of their washing cycle or set the refrigerator temperature using a smartphone or tablet; Smart Adapt: allows customers to download updates for their appliances using a WiFi connection. Customers can access recipes and advanced washing cycles without having to purchase a new product; and Food Management: allows customers to check stock and expiration dates of their food by dragging and dropping icons on an LCD screen. According to VanderWaal, “Regarding additional connectivity options, the next generation line will include Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. This technology simplifies the connection to between a consumer’s smartphone and the appliance, so you can easily register and share information between the devices. For example, if a consumer selects a recipe via the smartphone app, but wants it to appear on the refrigerator, it only requires a tap.” Whirlpool Whirlpool employs 6th Sense Live™ technology in their smart appliances. Sales of Whirlpool Corporation, said, “The 6th Sense Live platform allows homeowners to remotely connect to their home’s refrigerator, dishwasher and laundry pair. From that, they can track energy consumption and monitor and operate appliances from their computers and mobile devices, be it a tablet or smartphone. This connectivity makes appliances with 6th Sense Live Technology ideal for homeowners who want greater flexibility and control of home energy consumption.” Customers can also activate specific settings away from home with the Vacation Assistant feature. Smart Nudges and Alerts can tell the customer how the product is functioning. Specifically, alerts can also notify customers when a water

filter needs changing, a washing load ends and needs a fan turned on to keep it fresh or what cycle the dishwasher is on, just to name a few notifications. SUb-Zero and Wolf Sub-Zero and Wolf smart appliances feature the Smart Appliance App and Smart Appliance Module to integrate with the Control4® wireless home control system. For instance, the system “can notify parents when the fridge is open by sending messages if it’s open longer than 90 seconds, say. There are messages to know when to change fridge filter- email, texts, etc.,” said Paul Williams, vice president of security & communications products/support services with Control4. Lights also can flash, music can play or a text message can be sent when internal sensors detect food is finished cooking. “Now instead of having to babysit, I can just take the meat out of the oven,” said Williams. The Smart Appliance App allows customers to receive notifications for instances like when the oven is done preheating or what the current oven temperature is. The app can also be set to lower the refrigerator’s energy consumption during daytime, set to an energy-saving vacation mode or set to increase ice before entertaining, to name a few features. General service requests can be sent via the Control4 System and customers can be notified when there is a problem with an appliance. Sub-Zero built-in refrigerator models and Wolf E wall ovens now come with aftermarket installation for the new Smart Appliance module, which will boost functionality of certain appliances when integrated with the Control4 system.

GE GE’s smart technologies focus on monitoring and controlling appliances for greater energy savings with the Brillion™ Whole-Home Energy Sensor. “We’ve leveled the playing field by providing a product that communicates a home’s continuous real-time energy consumption to consumers without a smart meter,” said William Paul, product manager, home energy, GE Appliances. “Our new Whole-Home Sensor connects to the consumer’s electrical panel and allows them to understand their energy consumption without waiting for their electricity provider to install a smart meter.” The devise pulls data from the home’s large 240-volt applications like a panel box or pool pump to the Nucleus™ energy manager, which then sends the data to the customer’s smartphone or computer. GE also has

the Brillion Smart Plugs, which can be plugged into 120-volt outlets to read energy usage through the Nucleus energy manager. Also, Brillion thermostats allow customers to adjust their heating and cooling schedules remotely through their iPhone. Local Appeal of Smart Appliances Since the technology is so new, sellers like Siano Appliances are seeing smart appliances still attract a smaller segment of overall buyers in the market. Appliance sellers liken them to hi-definition televisions, where eventually the technology will take off in homes as customers become more educated and

prices become more accessible. Eventually smart appliances will become more ubiquitous and prices will drop as well, but it will take time. However, James Martin, General Manager of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery in Birmingham, AL, said, “The acceptance in our market has been tremendous. In today’s electronic age this is another product that has quickly become the upgraded standard for most all remodel projects.” Smart appliances are offered locally through many dealers, such as AllSouth Appliance Group, Inc. Sales representatives are always willing to help.

A Home With A View When Rick and Theresa Johanson moved into their 1915-vintage Federal style home in 2004, they had a master plan for renovating it in stages. One of those stages called for redoing the back of the house to improve its traffic flow. There was no way to get from the kitchen

This renovation moved up the priority list when a deck put on by a previous owner—and later covered and incorporated into the living space—started to sag and threatened to collapse. Scope of the Project The immediate purpose of the project was to remove the existing structure before it completely collapsed. Then with that done, the Johansons wanted to replace the existing sunroom and create an enclosed gallery where the original deck had been. They also wanted access from the garage to the rest of the house. Additionally, Theresa says they wanted to take advantage of the home’s view of downtown Birmingham. “We live up on Red Mountain and the back of our home looks down over the city,” she says. “It’s just a beautiful view and we wanted to take full advantage of it.”

to the garage without going outside.

Solutions Working with Bob McKay, CGR, CGB, CAPS, of McKay Building Company, the first order of business was to create a safe and stable foundation and supports for the deck and the sunroom. An eight-foot-wide gallery replaces the original deck and provides a runway connecting the rest of the home to the garage. To take advantage of the views, the exterior wall of the gallery is almost all windows. McKay installed high-efficiency, low E, clad Weathershield windows to maximize energy efficiency and provide protection from the elements. To bring the views from the gallery into the living room, a bay window in the living room was removed and the exterior wall was replaced with an elliptical arch. A six-foot picture window on the gallery wall was centered on the arch. The backs of two cabinets were also removed to enhance the view of the city from the living room and across the gallery. Another challenge was the transition between the new flooring in the gallery and the existing floor in the living area. A walnut border was created in the space between the new arch and the living room to create a seamless appearance in the transition between old and new flooring. Finally, cove lighting was installed that allows there to be lighting in the gallery without throwing reflections on the window that interfere with the views. Rave Results Theresa and Rick are very happy with the results of the project. “Bob grasped my vision and gave me exactly what I wanted,” Theresa says. “I wouldn’t change a thing.” “We spend a lot more time in the space. It’s a more functional space and it’s just beautiful.” Theresa thanks Bob and the team at McKay for all their hard work and dedication. “Working with them was really a great experience,” she says. Very seldom does a job so far exceed expectations that it can only be described as awesome. To be able to sit in the sunroom and watch the sun rise, the sun set, and the city lights as they begin to twinkle on in the evening is a view like few others in Birmingham.

A CONVENIENT

W

ende and Steve Berryhill always wanted the convenience of having a garage on the main level of their house. When their home was built in 1996, the original garage was on the lower level, requiring anyone bringing something from the car into the home to haul it up a flight of stairs. “There are so many reasons to have a garage on the main level,” Wende says, “and not having to haul things up and down is just one of them. We have five kids and once a couple of them started to drive, we spent a lot of time going up and down just to move cars around. It started to feel a little bit like a parking lot.”

A New Garage and More Wende and Steve hired a local architect who designed a three-car addition with the goal of making it look like it was part of the original home, not an add-on. The plan also included an entry alcove, stairway and enlarged breakfast room. To match the roof line and make the addition appear seamless, a bonus room was added above the addition. “We needed a bigger space for our breakfast nook and the additional 10 feet of space provides a nice transition from the garage to the rest of the house,” Wende comments. “Then, like a lot of remodels, ours took on a life of its own,” she chuckles. The final project would include a new driveway and parking area, retaining

20 GBAHB Remodel Birmingham • www.birminghambuilder.com

walls to improve the front and back yards, a fence enclosure and a large patio made from Alabama Bluestone. Design Highlights The Berryhills worked with Mike McKay, CAPS, CGR of Oak Alley, Inc., a design-build contractor in Chelsea, to bring their project to life. “The patio and backyard enhancements were Mike’s idea,” Wende says. “And I have to say, it’s my absolute favorite feature. We liked the idea of using as many locally sourced materials as possible and we actually went to the quarry to pick out the Alabama Bluestone.” “The patio has really changed the way we use the backyard,” Wende

says. “It’s such a great place for the entire family to gather. As a bonus, the orientation of the house blocks the sun during the hottest part of the day.” Oak Alley used Icynene spray foam insulation for the hard-to-cool space above the unheated garage. So when the space is being cooled, it stays cool; when it is being heated, it stays warm. Communication is Key To keep them informed of their remodel’s progress, Mike scheduled regular meetings with Wende and Steve. “We had a set meeting every week,” Wende comments. “He would come to it with a check list of everything he had completed and everything he was going to do next. I felt totally in touch with

everything that was going on,” she says. “It made a huge difference for me to know what was coming next and what to expect.” The project itself took approximately nine months to complete and, while most people consider living through a remodel a hassle, she enjoyed it. “I work out of our home so I got to see the daily progress and to meet all the people who worked on the job,” she says. “I loved every minute of the remodel and found the whole process really interesting.” Exceeding Expectations According to Wende, the first time she was able to pull up, put her car in the

garage and walk straight into the house made the remodel worth it. “That convenience was the whole reason we did the addition,” she says. “But the whole project has far exceeded our expectations. We didn’t start out with the outdoor living space in mind and it has turned out to be such a great space. We couldn’t be more pleased,” she concludes. Source for this article: Oak Alley, Inc. The Dynamic Duo B e fo r e

Any successful remodeling project requires two committed, engaged parties: a homeowner and a remodeling contractor. By sharing ideas and working together, they can turn dreams into reality. “What makes us different is our ability to listen to the client, ask the right questions, understand what they are trying to accomplish and how they plan to use their space,” says George Williams, CAPS, CGR, CGP and president of Precision Homecrafters. “In doing so, we can truly design a space that can meet their needs.” “We had a patio that was dysfunctional and really didn’t know how to make it more functional,” says Marvin Johnson. “George shared ideas and concepts of what my wife and I could do with the space to make it more enjoyable.” The Dilemma The Johnsons purchased their 4,700 square foot two-story nearly 13 years ago. Built 30 years ago, a builder had completely gutted and remodeled it so it was basically a new home when they bought it. The back porch, however, was really too small to be functional. 22 GBAHB Remodel Birmingham • www.birminghambuilder.com

“I like to grill out and we had a Big Green Egg on the 12' x 10' porch,” Marvin says. Unfortunately, the smoke from the Green Egg would envelope the small area,” he chuckles. “The original porch was just too small to be able to enjoy. We’d come out once in a while, but all you could really do was sit and look out the back.” The Solution “We had originally done a kitchen remodel for the Johnsons,” George says, “and talked about how their porch wasn’t big enough and that they’d like to do something with it. So we came up with some ideas.” “The key was making the porch big enough to be more functional, but still maintain a space that fit the house and its architecture,” he says. “We came up with a 12' x 22' screened-in porch and then added an outdoor patio, a pergola, a grille and a spot for the Green Egg. The renovation really gives them a nice outdoor kitchen and a space they can use year-round.” The screened-in porch features a comfortable sitting area, a television and a table and chairs for dining out. It also has several ceiling fans to keep the air moving on warmer evenings.

The Result Like any successful remodeling project, the Johnson’s new porch has changed the way they use their space. “My wife and I were sitting out here the other night saying how we wish we’d done the renovation sooner,” Marvin comments. “It has totally transformed the way we use the space. Before, we might use our porch a few times a year; now, we use it almost daily. We eat out here regularly and I have breakfast out here five days a week,” he says. A Great Job for Everyone “Whether we’re doing small repairs or a larger renovation, we enjoy helping homeowners transform their homes,” George says. “This was an extremely fun project for us to work on.” “We’re extremely happy with the work George and his team did,” Marvin stresses. “His attention to detail and the setting and managing of expectations for the project were very important. Importantly, George delivered on all his promises.” Source for this article: Precision Homecrafters, L.L.C. 1215 Lake Forest Circle, Birmingham, AL 35244 Contact: George Williams, CAPS, CGR, CGP | (205) 733-9583 www.precisionhomecrafter.com www.remodelinform.com • GBAHB Remodel Birmingham 23

A New Bathroom with Old World Charm

W

hen the homeowners decided to renovate their 20-year-old master bathroom, they decided to gut the room and start over. So it was out with the buildergrade features and in with charming old world touches. The new design reflects a sophisticated, eclectic style. A large claw foot tub with bronze fixtures is centered under the largest window in the room and serves as the focal point for the remodel. Alongside is a large, natural stone shower which blends seamlessly with its linear travertine tile and slate accents. Those same slate accents form a detail border around the perimeter of the room. Custom his and hers vanities with mixed finishes and distressing conveys well-worn comfort and warmth. The sinks are Kohler and they are one piece and cast iron. Tall recessed cabinetry flanks either side. All cabinets are custom made. “I had a picture in my mind of the bathroom I wanted and Case Design/Remodeling made it real,” says the homeowner. “They have such talented people working for them and they really went above and beyond to make me happy. We just love the results.” According to the homeowner, being able to communicate with your contractor is key to the success of any remodel. “Case listened to what I had to say and were all about making sure we were happy with the process and the end result,” says the homeowner.

Space Renovation

1st Place

Saving a Sunroom L ong after this home was built in the 1920s, a previous owner decided to build a deck off the back of the house to take advantage of overwhelming views of the city. Over the years, a cover was added, then it was screened in, then closed in with windows and, finally, an exterior wall was removed and the space became part of the living area. Unfortunately, the foundation and the support columns were grossly inadequate and the whole room started to sag. The immediate goal of the project was to remove the existing structure before it completely collapsed. Once that was done, they wanted to replace the existing sunroom and create an enclosed gallery with windows that extended across the back of the house. They also wanted access from the garage to the gallery and thus to the rest of the house. A bay window in the living room was removed and the exterior wall was replaced with an elliptical arch that copied the arch in the entry. A six-foot picture window on the gallery wall was centered on the arch. The backs of two cabinets were removed to enhance the view of the city from the living room and across the gallery. The existing deck was removed and replaced. In order not to infringe on the view of the city, the deck floor was lowered 10 inches. Code requires a 42-inch high railing around the perimeter

28

GBAHB Remodel Birmingham

of the deck. For a person sitting on the deck, the railing comes right at eye level. To avoid that problem, a second horizontal rail was run four inches below the top rail. Seldom does a job so far exceed expectations that it can be described as breathtaking. To be able to sit in the sunroom and watch the sun rise, the sun set, and the city lights as they begin to twinkle on in the evening is a view like few others in Birmingham. The arch at the end of the living room does not detract from the space, but enhances the spaciousness of the room and the view by extending the gallery all the way across the back of the house, the owners now have covered access from the garage to the house.

Kitchen Remodel over $80K 1st Place

A BEAUTIFUL, FUNCTIONAL KITCHEN

A

fter building a new home in 1998, the homeowner was never really happy with the kitchen. So when the time came to remodel, she had plenty of ideas. Two were critical: first, the original design was too dark and she wanted the new space to be brighter; second, the traffic flow needed to be improved so people had a place to gather outside of the work triangle. To start with, she had a picture of an island she liked, so she had her contractor, Precision Homecrafters, design and build it. The rest of the room’s design flowed around this island. The project took the existing space with its original island and incorporated an adjacent closed pantry which had a lot of wasted space. It doubled the size of the existing bar, redesigned the room’s flow to create more usable space and maintained some of the original cabinets. A load bearing wall between the kitchen and pantry was removed and the existing bar area was made wider. New perimeter cabinets were made to match some of the remaining ones. All new trim was designed to include multiple piece crown moulding.

Traditional residential appliances were replaced with a Wolf stove and Sub Zero refrigerator. Alabama white marble was selected and used throughout. The new island houses the microwave and a warming drawer. It also features large drawers for storage. It also includes a raised bar for sitting, which allows guests to be a part of the activity as meals are prepared. Carefully selected glass door cabinets provide for display of nicer glass and art. The traditional residential designer kitchen of the 1990s has been converted to a user-friendly kitchen in which the homeowner can enjoy working and entertaining.

Master Bath Remodelers

Bath Remodel $20K–$50K 1st Place

B

uilt in the 1980s, these master bathrooms badly needed to be updated. In both cases, the homeowners turned to Counter Dimensions to turn their dreams into reality. In the first project, the bath had blue and mauve wall paper, mold problems, peeling thermofoil cabinets and cracked cultured marble that had to go. The homeowners decided to say “goodbye” to their old friend and started over. The Counter Dimensions team gutted the bathroom down to the studs and brought all plumbing, venting and electrical up to current code. Key for the 6’7” tall man of the house was a shower that adjusted to his height. So, the new design opened up and enlarged the shower and the shower door by borrowing space from the toilet room. A new six foot whirlpool tub is a homeowner favorite. New porcelain tile and sinks, stained & glazed maple cabinets and Cambria quartz countertops give the room warmth and character. The tired and outdated bath is now modern and beautiful. The room feels much larger and has a spa-like feel. The second bathroom remodel had two goals: an updated look and a design that allowed for aging in place living. Faced with 30-year-old wall paper, a cultured marble tub and countertops, and tired cabinets, the owners again decided to start from scratch. Once again, the room was gutted and the Counter Dimensions team was faced with significant plumbing and electrical repairs. There were many splices in the wiring and there was no vent for the tub, shower or sink. An oversized tub was removed and replaced with a large 72"-wide shower with a bench and a 60" Kohler soaker tub. The threshold was lowered and a large frameless door was added. MidContinent cabinets with dark brown stain and dark granite countertops provide a splash of color in the room. The fixtures are chrome with floating oval mirrors and matching sconces. Finally, the walls are painted a beautiful spice brown, adding to the room’s spa-like feel. The new design takes the bathroom straight from 1980 to 2013. Importantly, the room feels larger, more relaxing and is truly a space for aging in space.
