NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT FROM ERICA NEEL, GBAHB REMODELERS CHAIRMAN he upcoming birth of my first child has made me reflect on my childhood. I think of all of the traditions that were established and where they took place. Like many of you, I can visualize the small details of the rooms that I inhabited as a child. I can picture the butcher block formica countertops with the harvest gold appliances in my first home. I can also remember the sunken den and how the shag carpet felt on my feet. In my second home, I remember the beautiful oak cabinetry in the kitchen and the arched double door at the entry. These memories are intertwined with the holidays, family gatherings, and the daily life we led in our home. So often we forget about how important our homes are to us. Many times we think about the maintenance or the housework we have to do to keep them up, but we must also remember that our surroundings in our home make us feel certain emotions. We all want to live somewhere that is pleasing to us whether that be with carpeted or hardwood floors, with stained or painted cabinetry, or with brick or siding on our house. Our homes are essentially an extension of our personality and taste and serve an integral part in our daily lives. We need to love them. As Chairman, I want to assure you that my industry has many qualified professionals who are able to transform your current home into a remodeled masterpiece or create a perfect custom home from scratch. Now is the time to act. Interest rates are at an all time low, but are steadily rising. Labor prices are at record low levels. We understand that in these challenging economic times, we must spend our money wisely. That time is now. Let’s make memories together.

CERTIFIED EXPERTS PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS SET PROFESSIONAL BUILDERS AND REMODELERS APART hen choosing a builder or remodeler, you want someone with the skill and expertise to do the job right. In a crowded marketplace, however, identifying a qualified professional can be difficult. That’s why the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) created professional designations that help consumers identify builders and remodelers who have committed themselves to continually improving their skills and being committed to their profession. When a homeowner selects a builder or remodeler with a NAHB professional designation, they are getting a professional with superior training, practical experience, and in-depth knowledge in their chosen specialty.

W

CERTIFIED GRADUATE BUILDER (CGB)

PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF: OAK ALLEY, INC.

The CGB designation means your builder has met prescribed standards of practice, possess at least two years building industry experience, has a proven track record of successful project management, has completed a comprehensive education curriculum, and pledges to uphold the program’s Code of Ethics. The CGB course is designed to emphasize business and project management skills as the key to a professional building operation.

CERTIFIED GRADUATE REMODELER (CGR) The CGR course emphasizes the development of business management skills as the key to a professional remodeling operation. Remodelers holding the CGR designation meet prescribed standards of business practice, possess a minimum of five years remodeling industry experience, have a proven track record of successful remodeling projects, complete a comprehensive education curriculum, and pledge to uphold the program’s Code of Ethics.

CERTIFIED AGING-IN-PLACE SPECIALIST (CAPS)

MASTER BUILDER (MB) / MASTER REMODELER (MR)

The CAPS designation program teaches the technical, business management and customer service skills essential for remodelers doing home modifications for the aging-in-place. The NAHB Remodelers Council, in collaboration with the AARP, developed this program to provide comprehensive, practical, market specific information about working with older and maturing adults to remodel their homes for aging-in-place.

The purpose of the Master Builder / Master Remodeler Program certification of the Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders is to further enhance the professionalism of participating members and to provide the consumer with contractors of the highest professional standards. Members of the program must pass a rigorous entry process in order to receive the designation as Master Builder or Master Remodeler. They are screened by a committee of their peers who review customer, supplier and sub-contractor references; check for any current or pending litigation; verify full liability and workman’s compensation insurance coverage; and validate financial stability. Membership is reviewed on a yearly basis and failure to meet the program’s requirements can warrant disqualification from the program.

CERTIFIED GRADUATE ASSOCIATE (CGA) The CGA certificate program offers associate members an opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the fundamentals of the home building industry. Modeled after the CGB curriculum, this designation is attained by completing three required and three elective courses which focus on improved management skills and business performance. The CGA designation is maintained by completing one course annually.

CERTIFIED GREEN PROFESSIONAL (CGP) The National Association of Home Builders’ Certified Green Professional™ designation recognizes builders, remodelers and other industry professionals who incorporate green building principles into homes – without driving up the cost of construction. Classwork leading to the designation provides a solid background in green building methods, as well as the tools to reach customers, from the organization leading the charge to provide market-driven green building solutions to the home building industry.

FLOORING BASICS: CHOOSING THE RIGHT FLOORING ften referred to as the “fifth wall,” your floor and how you cover it can have a big impact on any remodeling project. Floor covering can affect your project’s character, durability, and budget. According to Reneé LeCroy of Don’s Carpet One Floor & Home in Trussville, choosing flooring for your home doesn’t have to be complicated, but you do need to do your homework. “The entire square footage of your home needs to be covered with some type of flooring,” she says. “You need to think about how you want the room to look, how you are going to use the space, and how much you want to spend.”

O

BUILDING CHARACTER Floor covering has a major impact on the look and feel of a room. The type of flooring you select can help you instill a certain character in your space. For instance, if you desire a clean, modern

look, the right tile might help you achieve it. A rustic or “north woods” motif can be brought to life with a wood floor. The right carpeting might suggest warmth and comfort. “Floor covering is fashion,” says LeCroy. “Your floor is your largest wall, so choosing the right material and look can really make a difference.” TRAFFIC PATTERN According to Matt Smith of Riverchase Carpeting and Flooring in Pelham, nothing in your home gets more use than your flooring. “When selecting any type of flooring, it is critical that you consider the amount of wear and tear it is going to get,” he says. “Consider floor traffic, as well as room usage.” For instance, a kitchen or main bathroom that gets heavy use and foot traffic needs a harder-wearing floor covering than the master or guest bedrooms.

Other questions to ask yourself include: Do you have children? Do you have pets? Do you plan on doing a lot of entertaining? And while the durability of your floor covering is certainly a matter of the type of material you select, the amount you invest in a particular material can also have an impact. “If you want your carpeting to look as good in 10 years as it does when you install it, you are going to need to invest a little bit more per square foot,” Smith advises. COST/BENEFIT CONSIDERATIONS Whether you are building a home or remodeling a particular space, you will need to cover the floors. And that means budget appropriately for the type of flooring you want to install. “Homeowners need to do some research to set their flooring budget,” LeCroy comments. “Too often, the flooring budget is an afterthought. While it might be tempting to go with the lowest price per square foot, you probably will not get the quality you desire,” she says. LeCroy writes a blog (yourfifthwall.com) that provides information on different flooring categories and what average prices homeowners should expect.

FLOORING TRENDS Flooring for your home can basically be divided into two different categories: soft-surface and hard-surface. There are many different brands and options to choose from, but basically your choices include: hardwood, laminate, vinyl, tile, cork, bamboo, carpet, and linoleum. Whatever you choose, each type has unique characteristics and advantages. Hard surfaces—more specifically, hardwood floors—are currently the top choice of most newly built or remodeled homes. Hardwood flooring is becoming more popular in many rooms that have otherwise been carpeted in the past, and then area rugs are placed on top. Hardwood floors typically have a lower life cycle cost than carpet and add more value when it’s time to sell the home.

12

Other choices for hard surfaces include ceramic tiles and laminate which are also dominating the residential flooring options. In contrast, the carpeting trends continue to move toward softer, textured, and more luxurious styles. Area rugs not only add charm, warmth, and comfort to a space, but rugs are leading the way as the hottest decorating feature. When choosing flooring options, here are some options to choose from: HARDWOOD FLOORS Hardwood floors can add old-world elegance with modern twists, moving more toward distressed planks, wider widths, and exotic woods. Depending on how you want the room to look, hardwood flooring can be elegant or rustic. Keep in mind when you choose the kind of wood, you want it to be beautiful as well as durable. Explore the variety of finishes, colors, and wood types available. You are sure to find a look you’ll like. The most popular hardwoods include oak, then maple, and ash. Specialty woods tend to be more expensive, however, they are often quite beautiful. Depending on your budget, you may want the luxurious look of specialty woods. Walnut, teak, and cherry are popular choices. You can also customize your wood floor, arranging it in a unique design, or using different stains. Unexpected shades of stain can make your floor stand out like no other. FLOOR TILE Ceramic floor tiles offer timeless beauty and durability. Travertine tile is also another flooring option becoming more and more popular. One of the most durable of all tiling materials are ceramic tile and natural stone materials, which, when properly installed, can last the lifetime of a house. This durability, combined with the natural beauty of stone and the fantastic options of tile types, colors, patterns, and textures makes tile and stone the materials of choice where quality and character are important.

“Tile is very popular right now, particularly Travertine products,” says Fred Henry of the Robert F. Henry Tile Company in Birmingham. “From a design standpoint, the trend is toward a polished clean look, as opposed to the rustic look that dominated design for some time. We’re gradually moving toward cleaner lines and simpler designs.” CERAMIC TILE VS. STONE Ceramic tile and stone are very different. Stone flooring can include quarried slate, limestone, flagstone, granite, or marble. Natural stone tile is a relatively affordable alternative to stone and is made from real stone aggregate suspended in a polymer binder. “Choosing the right stone tile is usually a combination of personal preference and budget considerations,” says Angela Hicks of Jenkins Brick & Tile in Pelham. Marble and granite, for example, offer a more formal appearance. The more expensive of stone flooring, marble is an elegant, ornamental stone that takes a high polish. Both sandstone and limestone are more brittle but less costly. Ceramic tile is made from slabs of clay that are known for hardness. Ceramic tile may be either glazed or unglazed. Glazed tiles have very hard, smooth surfaces that reject water and stains. Again, this is yet another time to consider the traffic in the room.

VINYL FLOORING This flooring offers so much to choose from. You can choose the look of stone, ceramic, and hardwood, and sheet vinyl and vinyl tiles are an easy solution for today’s homeowner looking for quality and design. Vinyl tiles are also easy to install and are popular for many do-ityourself projects. Like Vinyl sheet, vinyl tile is durable, affordable, and easy to maintain. Vinyl sheet flooring comes in a variety of styles from wood looks to natural stone, to patterned designs. Vinyl sheet is also durable and is an easy-toclean floor type that can be installed anywhere in the home. It is also known for its resistance to scuffs, stains, and spills. CARPETING Once known as the most practical home flooring, carpet can bring color and warmth into every room. Your options are endless when it comes to patterns, colors, textures, and is still one of the top-selling floor coverings today. You may be overwhelmed by the many choices when it comes to carpet. Don't choose carpeting only for its color. Consider the carpet's fibers and construction, as well as your lifestyle and how you use the room it will be in. Patterned carpets are increasingly popular. The patterns are made of cut & loop pile. Plush or cut-pile carpet has loops trimmed off so that yarn ends poke up. While a popular choice, plush

FLOORING BASICS: CHOOSING THE RIGHT FLOORING carpet doesn't tend to wear as well as berber carpeting. Berber carpet creates a nubby texture with complete yarn loops that stand upright. Wool is a popular carpeting fiber. It tends to cost more than synthetics, but it's comfortable, durable, and natural looking. Be aware that direct sunlight will fade wool fiber over time. Synthetic fibers are made from several artificial materials. Nylon is the most popular because of its durability, although it can be damaged by prolonged exposure to sunlight. “There are also an increasing number of value-added features available on newer carpeting,” says Smith. “Stain resistant and odor absorbing products are becoming more and more available.” CORK FLOORING Known for its comfort to walk on, cork flooring is also very warm, and is gaining popularity among older people who are remodeling their homes while keeping “aging-in-place” a priority.

BAMBOO FLOORS An extremely environmentally friendly hardwood, bamboo is becoming one of the most popular flooring trends. Although it is currently more popular on the west coast, it is also gaining popularity throughout the United States. Technically a grass, not a wood product, bamboo is a renewable resource that can be harvested every five years. Additionally, bamboo is actually harder than hardwood floors, which makes it a much more durable material. LAMINATE FLOORING Originally from Europe, laminate floors are practical due to their durability, hard wearing, and beautiful options. Laminates offer stone and granite patterns for unlimited decorating possibilities. LINOLEUM Although not nearly as popular in upscale remodeling projects, linoleum was known for being environmentally

friendly years ago. It is available in a large selection of colors and patterns and is suitable for any decorating solution. Linoleum is durable and environmentally friendly. It can enhance many rooms with its marbled patterns and unique designs. RUGS This versatile decorating choice can add character to any room. You can use your sense of style and personality in any area of your home. This year, luxurious shag rugs in front of roaring fireplaces are a big hit with decorators. CONSULT AN EXPERT According to LeCroy, whatever flooring you choose, make sure you consult with an expert. “Professionals understand materials, textures and colors, and they can help you get the most value per square foot. Importantly, an expert will make sure your price is the total installed price and that you understand what your product warranty includes. They will also make sure you understand how to maintain your flooring so you get the most out of your investment.” Sources For This Article: Don’s Carpet One Floor & Home Contact: Reneé LeCroy P.O. A HISTORIC REMODEL

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF: OAK ALLEY, INC.

When adding an addition or renovating a space, the goal is to make the new look like it was always there. This is never more important than with a historical renovation. It is also incredibly challenging. Cabinets, tile, and even bricks are not made like they were 70, 80, or more years ago. While our processes have made it easier to manufacture many of these materials, they have also made it harder to match these materials to a home built long ago. But it is possible and here’s how.

16

GBAHB Remodel Birmingham

hen Benjamen B. Spratling, III and Susan Foy Spratling purchased their Mountain Brook home in 1977, it was the character and charm of the 1928-vintage Tudor that attracted them. “Walking into our home for the first time just took my breath away,” says Susan. “I loved the kitchen and its original cabinetry, the brickwork and the slope of the roof. The home was quaint and very appealing.” So when the lean-to porch off the back

W

of the home needed to be replaced due to a termite infestation, the Spratlings took the opportunity to replace the porch with a space more in keeping with the historical style of the home. “The back porch never really looked like the rest of the house,” Susan comments, “and my son, who has a background in architecture, created a design true to the home’s original style. He incorporated architectural details and construction materials that matched the home’s original style.” Susan credits Mike McKay, President of OakAlley, with bringing her son’s design to life. “Mike’s genius was to come into our home, see what we wanted to do, and then make it better,” she says.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF: OAK ALLEY, INC.

REMODELING AND RESTORING The remodel starts with a gull wing roof, arched entryway, and concrete water table that replicates the original architecture. New brick was tirelessly woven into place making a seamless transition between the old and the new. Inside, the bead board ceiling and textured walls preserve the historical appearance. The addition serves as the home’s most frequently used entry and its laundry area. Cabinetry designed to match the home’s original cupboard conceals laundry and sewing appliances. It also adds much-needed storage. Granite countertops make the space attractive as well as functional. HVAC ducting through the attic is supplemented by radiant heat in the floor. And the attic space over the new laundry provides a much-needed closet for the bedroom above it. Also, the homeowners preferred a new route to the sunroom. The as-built sunroom entrance was up steps, across the landing, and back down steps. This made a very awkward way to enter the sunroom. By relocating the bathroom to the new addition, adding matching hardwood floors and a new light fixture, a beautiful entry way was created. With the steps in the sunroom removed, brick work and tile repair, the sunroom gained desired extra floor space. “My husband and I spent about 30 years standing in our hallway trying to figure out how to get out to our sunroom

GBAHB Remodel Birmingham

17

A HISTORIC REMODEL without having to go up and down steps,” Susan says. “Mike took one look, said we could move our small bathroom to the new addition, build a new doorway, and get rid of the stairs. It took him about two seconds to figure that out,” she chuckles.

Importantly, both the sun room and the bathroom are now more functional spaces. The sun room originally had single pane windows, so it could really only be used in the warmer months. By adding double pane glass, it has now become a year-round space.

Moving the bathroom to the new addition allowed it to be enlarged so a shower could be added. With aging parents who struggle with stairs, having a full bathroom on the first floor is very desirable. Many other areas of the home were also repaired, refinished, and upgraded, improving the home’s beauty and integrity. The bead board ceiling and textured walls were particularly important to preserving the home’s original look. And while the six-month project is a big success, it wasn’t without its challenges. According to McKay, previous work done on the back porch prior to OakAlley’s involvement resulted in a concrete slab being poured incorrectly. “We painstakingly leveled and squared the slab after having an engineer certify the foundation,” he says. The home also had five levels of kitchen floor in place that had to be removed and replaced. Unfortunately, three of them had asbestos in them, requiring a complete asbestos abatement. Additionally, after exposing the beams under the kitchen floor, it became apparent that they would need to be replaced as well. SELECTING YOUR CONTRACTOR Susan is adamant that finding the right remodeling contractor makes all the difference in having a successful remodel. “OakAlley did a great job,” she says. “We really love the results.” She was referred to Oak Alley by a friend who is an interior decorator. A referral from someone you trust is a great way to find a remodeler for your next project.

MODERN BALCONY

ADDS ELEGANT CHARM would put a second Christmas tree up there during the Christmas holiday, but other than that they didn’t use the 250square-foot area. “One of our friends recommended putting our piano up there and that’s when I kind of got possessed about using the space. I thought the piano would be super cool up there, and I also wanted a home office.” The space is open to the main level with balconies overlooking a sitting room as well as overlooking the two-story foyer.

WASTED SPACE Although Tricia liked having the balcony up there, it literally was wasted space. “There was no way to get up there. Unless we put a ladder up, there was no way to actually use the space.” She

FINDING THE RIGHT REMODELER The couple, which had owned previous homes throughout the years, researched area remodeling companies to make plans for adding a staircase and making the loft a usable area in the home.

“One of our designers that we had working on the home recommended that we check out Roddy O. Sample & Associates, Inc., in Pelham, AL.” Ironically, Jim, who had used Roddy O. Sample & Associates in a prior home of his, remembered what an excellent job Roddy and his company had done for him in the past, so they decided to have them do the remodeling project. GETTING STARTED According to Roddy, the existing iron railing of the balcony that overlooked the sitting room was removed and stored for reuse. “A double helix spiral staircase with an iron handrail was installed in the corner of the room. A landing was built at the loft level to receive the top of the new staircase,” Roddy said.

hen Jim and Tricia Holbrook bought this five-bedroom, ninebathroom home, five years ago they knew that some projects would be done throughout the home over the upcoming years. The home was recently built, but it had some work that they wanted to do. “There was a balcony loft above the foyer that was not accessible from the main level of the home,” Tricia said. “The builder had a metal staircase that we didn’t love so we never installed it.”

MATCHING FLOORING Hardwood flooring was installed on the new landing to match the existing wide plank oak flooring of the loft and was refinished to match the mahogany stair treads. “They did a great job on matching up the flooring,” Tricia said. “In addition, programmable disco style lighting was added, which uniquely sets off the new space—to say the least,” Tricia says. “They wanted the new space to be elegant 90 percent of the time and the ability for it to be party time the other 10 percent,” Roddy said. The new “Sky Bar” now serves this purpose; it works well as an office, but also provides a cool area for a cocktail party with live entertainment. Additionally, there are windows and a door that face the front yard and drive that provide wonderful natural light and a view of anyone coming or going.

GBAHB Remodel Birmingham

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES According to Roddy, there were several challenges to accomplish this project. “The first was to design a staircase that would blend with the existing decor and complement the existing curved floating main stairs that is located just a few feet away. We looked at options of a straight stair with a landing turn and several antique stairs from Europe.” After researching online, a wooden double helix spiral staircase was chosen. The staircase was built with closed stringers and risers and mahogany treads to match the main stairs. Another challenge was to build the wrought iron stair railing. The spiral stair does not have a center pole like most typical spiral stairs. The iron railing is on both sides of the treads. The top channel and rail cap had to be hand forged to match the radius of the wooden stringers. “This was especially tough on the inside rail because of the very tight radius. One interesting note, is the detail in the balusters,” Roddy said. Alternating balusters have one or two turned details. “We had to use the two turned detail balusters on all the inside rail to achieve the same look because it is so steep. Obviously it was a challenge to move a Baby Grand piano to a second story level with the only stairs being a spiral but we did it without a scratch,” Roddy said.

HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS Tricia and Jim couldn’t be happier with the results. “I use the area quite frequently now and I just love it. I would definitely recommend Roddy O. Sample & Associates; they did an excellent job.” Sources For This Article: Roddy O. Sample & Associates, Inc. Contact: Roddy Sample, CGR, CAPS P.O. CHARMING PORCH ADDITION he Dinsmore family has lived in this 1983-built, four-bedroom, three- and one-half bathroom, 2,600-squarefoot home for the last ten years. The home had two outdoor decks that the family considered connecting over the years, but never got around to it. “There were two decks, and one was off of the master bedroom,” says Amanda Dinsmore. “It was just wasted space and it never really got used. We wanted to take advantage of the outdoor space so we looked into starting a remodeling project.” When they decided to move forward with the project, they were having the gutters on their house replaced. Several contractors stopped by inquiring about the project. “One of the contractors asked what we were planning on doing and they recommended that I talk with George Williams with Precision Homecrafters in Birmingham. They highly recommended him and his company, and he actually lived really close to us.” Amanda had already looked into many area remodeling companies. “I wasn’t very impressed with any of the companies that I had already talked to. One was terrible, just saying negative comments about our house and stating things that were wrong with it,” she said. At that point, she decided to give George a call. “When I met with George, he was very nice to work with and he listened to what I wanted out of the project.”

T

MET WITH COMPANY According to George, the scope of the project included demolition of two existing decks and the construction of a screen porch with adjacent deck and steps. The design and planning objectives included creating an outdoor space that would be usable in most weather conditions and that would accommodate many activities—a screen porch for family relaxation and eating, an adjacent deck that could be used for grilling, eating, or watching football games, and a child’s play area that is also accessible from the master bedroom. “The homeowners wanted a space that is bright and inviting that would function as a large entertaining area for family and friends, but would also provide the feel of a private family get-away area for reading, relaxing, and just being together,” George said.

26

GBAHB Remodel Birmingham

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES This job was not without its challenges. For example, the upstairs bay window restricted the required roof pitch and configuration. Five large pine trees had to be removed and some footings were on a steep incline of about 14 feet below the deck band board. “The homeowners agreed to remove the window from one of the bay’s side panels on the second floor. This allowed us to install sheetrock on the interior wall where the window was removed and carry siding through the exterior to provide adequate space for the roof,” George said. A priority for the homeowners was for the screen porch to be off of the kitchen for easy access when grilling out. “We wanted better access to it so we could spend time out there together as a family,” Amanda said.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF: PRECISION HOMECRAFTERS

HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS The addition of this screen porch and deck has provided a spacious outdoor living area that has exceeded all of the family’s needs and expectations. Adjacent to the deck is an entrance from the porch side, and patio doors lead from the master suite. Exposed rafters with a tongue and grooved pine ceiling add to the spacious feeling, but also give a warm, cozy look for relaxing alone. The large deck provides plenty of room for grilling, entertaining friends and family, and just hanging out. It has become a gathering place and the center of much activity. A ceiling fan creates a breeze on those dog days of summer, while a portable propane heater knocks the chill off on cool days. The wooded area behind the house adds a level of privacy, yet they overlook the golf course, viewing a manicured fairway. “We are really happy with the way it turned out,” Amanda said. “They were very clean about the project and did an excellent job. The proficiency was also a big priority for us; we wanted it done as soon as possible and they definitely worked hard to make sure they did that.” Source For This Article: Precision Homecrafters Contact: George Williams 1215 Lake Forest Circle Birmingham, AL 35244 205-733-9583

HOMEOWNERS GET MOST

BANG FOR THEIR BUCK wo crucial goals of any remodeling project are to get the space you desire and to get the most bang for your buck. Reba and Jon Myer achieved both with a recent renovation of their master bathroom. And they can prove it. Not only are they extremely happy with their remodel, but it earned them a stint on the HGTV show “Bang For Your Buck.” The Myers are no strangers to remodeling, having redone nearly every aspect of their 1950s-vintage ranch. Beginning with removing its roof to add a second story, they have transformed their home into a modified Tudor. The master bathroom, however, was the one room they had not redone. According to Reba, if it’s not the home’s original master bathroom, it was at least close in terms of age and design. “It was really old and unattractive,” she says. “It needed to be totally redone.” In fact, with another newer bathroom suite on the second floor, the couple actually moved their bedroom upstairs for a time. “My husband came home and I had my bags packed. He asked me where I was going and I said I was moving upstairs,” she laughs. “I told him the master bath did not ‘cut it’ and that he was welcome to move with me. So we did. It was then that we decided we had better remodel,” she says, still chuckling. Ideas for the new bathroom came from magazines and looking at what other people have done with their bathrooms. “I love nice design and really collected ideas that intrigued me,” Reba says.

T

A NEW MASTER BATHROOM The first step in the remodel was to move some walls and totally gut the entire space. Every piece of sheet rock and existing tile was removed, so the new project was truly started from scratch. The original bath was expanded two feet into the bedroom and an adjacent guest room was incorporated to include a walk-in closet.

Inside the door of the new bathroom, semi-custom maple cabinetry provides an elegant look. The cabinets themselves are eggshell with pewter glaze and divide his and her sinks installed in a marble countertop. Twin mirrors with bronze light fixtures complete the wall. Natural Travertine tile covers the floor. Straight back, under the window, sits a large soaking tub. Inset and surrounded by antique white penny round ceramic tile it features glass-fronted cabinets on each end and a large bronze light fixture above. A sizable glass-surround shower is located opposite the sinks. Done in Travertine with a bench seat, the shower features two shower heads: a hand-held faucet and a rain head shower coming out of the wall. Built-in insets hold shampoo and other shower essentials. A tile floor and tile accents on the wall match the tile around the soaking tub. OVERCOMING CHALLENGES Lee Welden, a designer with Counter Dimensions, Inc., in Pelham, AL, which worked on the project, said that the most challenging aspect of the project was the space plan. “The Myers did not want any additional changes to the exterior, so the bathroom layout was determined by the location of the existing window,” Lee says. “The tub was centered under it and balanced by glass-door wall cabinets at each end.” The results are stunning. The room exudes warmth and elegance, while also offering a significant amount of storage space thanks to the cabinetry. Importantly, the Myers are very happy with the results. “We really love it,” says Reba. “It is exactly what we wanted.”

HGTV’S “BANG FOR YOUR BUCK” The premise of the HGTV program “Bang For Your Buck” is to compare three similar remodeling projects and decide which homeowners got the most for their money. When the program came to Birmingham, the Myer remodel was recommended to the producers. After completing a questionnaire about their new bathroom and providing a cost breakdown of the different aspects of the remodel, the Myer’s project was selected as one of the three remodels for the program. Filming the program takes two days. On day one, the producer and two camera people visited with Reba and

BANG FOR THEIR BUCK Jon and interviewed them about their remodel. On day two, program host Vern Yip visited with expert realtor Collette McDonald. “The second day is really fun and really crazy,” Reba says. “You get to meet Vern, which was really fun for my 10year-old daughter, and a bunch of camera people show up along with a makeup person. It is really a whirlwind.” On day two, Reba and Jon left so that Collette and Vern could go through the remodel by themselves. They critique the remodel based on how they feel the homeowners spent their money. Then, Reba and Jon came back and were shown clips of what Collette and Vern said about their new master bathroom. “They are filming us watching the comments,” Reba says. “Of course they want us to agree or say ‘they’re crazy’ or give some type of reaction. Of course, my husband is a big ham anyway,” she laughs. “Then they pack up and leave and you do not hear the results until you see the show.” On January 8, 2011, the Myers had a big party at their home to watch the program. And their friends found out at the same time they did that Collette and Vern felt Reba and Jon got the biggest bang for their buck. “It was very rewarding to hear them say we did a nice job,” Reba says. “But it was just really fun to be involved with the program. We had a great time.”

FINAL THOUGHTS Reba offers the following advice to others considering a remodel: “Go with what you love and what you really want. There are tons of opinions out there about what you should do and what you shouldn’t do. Be true to yourself. Spend the amount of money you want. Achieve the look and feel you want to achieve.” Source For This Article: Counter Dimensions Contact: Lee Weldon 2726 Chandalar Place Drive Pelham, AL 35124 205-664-3587
