As we approach the first anniversary of the tornadoes that damaged our homes and businesses, I am proud to say we are well on our way to a full recovery. Many of our members stepped up to help with this recovery and we will always remember that our members are ready to help in a time of need. I am also optimistic about recent improvements in our economy. Housing prices and housing sales are slowly rising in our area. And the stock market is again nearing the levels it was at before the recession. I remain hopeful that the investment many of us have made in our homes will pay off. In fact, we’re already seeing some homeowners begin to reinvest in their homes in the form of remodeling projects. Some of those projects are described in the pages of this magazine. They are just a sample of the great work done by our members. hen choosing a builder or remodeler, you want someone with the skill and expertise to do the job right. In a crowded marketplace, however, identifying a qualified professional can be difficult. That’s why the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) created professional designations that help consumers identify builders and remodelers who have committed themselves to continually improving their skills and being committed to their profession. When a homeowner selects a builder or remodeler with a NAHB professional designation, they are getting a professional with superior training, practical experience, and in-depth knowledge in their chosen specialty.

CERTIFIED GRADUATE BUILDER (CGB) The CGB designation means your builder has met prescribed standards of practice, possess at least two years building industry experience, has a proven track record of successful project management, has completed a comprehensive education curriculum, and pledges to uphold the program’s Code of Ethics. The CGB course is designed to emphasize business and project management skills as the key to a professional building operation. CERTIFIED GRADUATE REMODELER (CGR) The CGR course emphasizes the development of business management skills as the key to a professional remodeling operation. Remodelers holding the CGR designation meet prescribed standards of business practice, possess a minimum of five years remodeling industry experience, have a proven track record of successful remodeling projects, complete a comprehensive education curriculum, and pledge to uphold the program’s Code of Ethics. CERTIFIED AGING-IN-PLACE SPECIALIST (CAPS) The CAPS designation program teaches the technical, business management and customer service skills essential for remodelers doing home modifications for the aging-in-place. The NAHB Remodelers Council, in collaboration with the AARP, developed this program to provide comprehensive, practical, market specific information about working with older and maturing adults to remodel their homes for aging-in-place. CERTIFIED GRADUATE ASSOCIATE (CGA) The CGA certificate program offers associate members an opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the fundamentals of the home building industry. Modeled after the CGB curriculum, this designation is attained by completing three required and three elective courses which focus on improved management skills and business performance. The CGA designation is maintained by completing one course annually. CERTIFIED GREEN PROFESSIONAL (CGP) The National Association of Home Builders’ Certified Green Professional™ designation recognizes builders, remodelers and other industry professionals who incorporate green building principles into homes – without driving up the cost of construction. Classwork leading to the designation provides a solid background in green building methods, as well as the tools to reach customers, from the organization leading the charge to provide market-driven green building solutions to the home building industry.

MASTER BUILDER (MB) / MASTER REMODELER (MR) The purpose of the Master Builder / Master Remodeler Program certification of the Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders is to further enhance the professionalism of participating members and to provide the consumer with contractors of the highest professional standards. Members of the program must pass a rigorous entry process in order to receive the designation as Master Builder or Master Remodeler. They are screened by a committee of their peers who review customer, supplier and subcontractor references; check for any current or pending litigation; verify full liability and workman’s compensation insurance coverage; and validate financial stability. Membership is reviewed on a yearly basis and failure to meet the program’s requirements can warrant disqualification from the program. GRADUATE MASTER BUILDER (GMB) The ultimate designation for the building professional, the Graduate Master Builder (GMB) designation is for experienced veterans only. Before beginning the GMB designation process, candidates must have the CGB designation, the CGR designation, the CGA designation with five years of building experience, or ten years of building experience and have completed three CGB/CGR/CGA courses. GMB course topics include risk management and insurance, negotiating, financial management and quality construction, to name a few. They are more advanced with in-depth instruction geared for experienced building professionals.

Outdoor Oasis When Ron and Leigh Ann Ling moved into their home in 2003, they immediately fell in love with the screened-in porch and attached deck on the back of the house. Part of the original home built in 1988, the covered porch was roughly 12' x 12' and featured a tin roof and 4" x 4" support post construction with a plywood and batten strip ceiling. Overall, with the uncovered area, the structure was approximately 12' x 24'.

e enjoy cooking out a lot and having family over a lot and that little screenedin porch was the place everyone gathered,” Ron says. “So when it became obvious we’d have to replace the original structure, we knew we wanted another screened-in area.”

A NEW STRUCTURE To get ideas for their new project, the Ling’s attended the Alabama Home & Garden Show last year. They talked to several contractors about their needs and invited a few to come out to discuss the job. “George [Williams of Precision Homecrafters] was the only one that took us and showed us some decks he had built,” Ron says. “One of them was a

“It’s a wonderful spot for just the two of us to talk and commune with each other.” big open one similar to the one we had and we really just fell in love with it,” he says. “Our initial interview with Ron and Leigh Ann helped us define what they wanted in an outdoor living space,” Williams says. “It was our job to design and present it in such a way so they could see exactly what it was going to look like when completed. This design-build process took into account size requirements for family gatherings, outdoor cooking preferences, covered porch and open deck objectives and of course having the finished project appear part of the original architecture.” “We talked about size and roof options. Based on the number of people for family gatherings, it seemed a 20' x 20' porch would work well,” Williams comments. “The covered porch would require a gable roof versus the existing shed roof.” The final project is really three decks in one. In addition to the screened-in porch, there is a separate 10' x 10' grilling deck to one side of the porch. On the other side, a 16' x 18' spring deck was added with six foot wide steps. All three are made from 2" x 6" pine boards supported by 6” x 6” posts. The project was started in May and the Lings were cooking out on the Fourth of July. Demolition of the old deck took two days and construction of the new structure took approximately six weeks. Complete with comfortable furniture, ceiling fans and indirect lighting, the new screened-in porch is an oasis of relaxation.

It is not often that a do-it-yourselfer and a professional contractor team up on a successful remodel, but that is exactly what happened on this project. The result of this collaboration is a brand-new kitchen for this family of eight.

PROJECT GOALS With six home-schooled children, the homeowners desired a kitchen with multiple uses. They wanted to include a table with seating for eight, more counter space to accommodate multiple meal-time “helpers,” a desk area with room for a computer and textbooks, and they wanted it open to the family room. Importantly, any products used in the remodel needed to be durable and easy to maintain. While the project’s original plan was to bump the kitchen out into the front yard to provide the space needed to accommodate everything they wanted, the project estimate exceeded the remodeling budget. Needless to say, those plans were quickly scrapped in favor of one that required the least number of structural changes, while still meeting the “must haves” on their wish list. A CREATIVE SOLUTION Ultimately, the kitchen was reconfigured by swapping out a tall, double window with a smaller one at the front of the house and creating a pantry closet where the foyer entry to the kitchen had previously been.

SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES The seamless, Corian countertops with a deep, stainless steel, single bowl sink makes clean up a breeze. Before, the homeowners were unable to open the dishwasher while standing at the shallow, corner sink which was wedged in next to the stove. The new arrangement gives everyone plenty of space to operate regardless of the task. Working together, this do-it-yourself homeowner and contractor created a beautiful, functional environment in which to work, learn and play. ■

The handy homeowner did the demolition, changed out the windows and constructed the new pantry walls, laid the prefinished hardwood floors and did the drywall finishing and painting. He even filled in the exterior siding and added a flower filled window box! Interestingly, when the homeowner replaced the wood floors in the house a few years ago, he realized he might need more wood down the road and saved some. So when he and his 13-year-old son needed to patch the floor where the old cabinets came out, they had what they needed and it matched perfectly. New Mid-Continent cabinets, Corian countertops, Hardware Resources cabinet hardware, Jerusalem Stone Subway backsplash tile, and the electrical and plumbing work were then completed by Counter Dimensions. The homeowners first learned about Counter Dimensions after seeing an ad in this magazine. After interviewing several contractors, they selected the firm for their project. “We placed a dining table in the center of the room which became the true heart of the kitchen,” says Lee Welden of Counter Dimensions. “It is a great place for the family to gather for meals and to commune with one another daily. A true ‘eat-in’

A Breathtaking Kitchen Andrea and Gene Hunter decided their kitchen just wasn’t adequate for their family of four. Not only was there a lack of space, but the floor plan created a thoroughfare right through the middle of it. So they decided a major renovation was in order.

“T

o go from our den where our fireplace is located to our family room, dining room or bedrooms, you literally took a path right through the center of the kitchen,” says Andrea. “With traffic constantly going in and out, we were always bumping into each other. There just wasn’t enough space to enjoy the room.” Goals for their remodel involved increasing the size of the room, adding more counter space including a large island, converting the stove from electric to propane and installing larger windows to improve the views of the backyard. “We also wanted to reuse as much of our existing cabinetry as possible and create a desk area in the kitchen for the family computer,” Andrea says. “It’s a great place for doing homework and going through the mail, and it keeps the kitchen counters clear,” she adds.

THE RENOVATION PLAN The remodeling plan called for the space to be extended eight feet into the backyard, adding approximately 120 square feet to the existing kitchen. Structurally, a new beam was installed to support the upper level and roof load. Stone stairs leading into the backyard were relocated to make room for the expansion. The existing dark, wood cabinets were rearranged and a formidable island and spectacular floor-toceiling range hood—in white—were added. Stretching 11 feet to the top of the ceiling, the new gas cook top’s range hood with tile backsplash creates a dramatic focal point. “I got the idea for the large mantel over the stove by looking through remodeling magazines and cabinetry books,” says Andrea. “And because we had dark cabinets already, I really wanted to have a contrast with the lighter colored cabinets.” A combination of rainforest green and butterfly Verde granite countertops were installed including a raised bar in the island. The mix of cabinets and countertops adds to the room’s enchantment. The breakfast nook was opened up and seating was added at the bar. All appliances are conveniently laid out on one side of the island to allow the host to entertain with ease, serving guests as conversation flows.

GREAT RESULTS According to Andrea, the remodel has changed the way they use the space. “Gene and I spend a lot more time working together on meals,” she says. “Plus the entire family can sit at the island for breakfast or lunch. During football season, it’s really nice because the kitchen is wide open to the den where the television is and we can have a buffet set up.” Andrea and Gene credit Mike McKay, president of Oak Alley, and his team for much of the success of their project. “I picked up a copy of Remodel Birmingham and saw a job I liked that Oak Alley had done,” Andrea says. “At one point we had gone to the same church with Mike and we reconnected.” “He is very easy to work with, he gave us great, computer-generated pictures of what the project would look like, and his timeline was very clear,” she says. The new kitchen is everything Gene and Andrea hoped for and more. “It’s just so beautiful and it really takes my breath away,” she says. “It’s everything we could ever want and we’ll be here until our children are grown and we’re ready to downsize.” ■ Sources for this article: Oak Alley, Inc. Year-Round Outdoor Living Tricia and Jim Holbrook have always loved spending time with family and friends on their porch. A large area that was open on 2-1/2 sides and touting a beautiful fireplace, it was covered by a second level terrace and Jim’s office. Over the years, the couple hosted dinner parties and entertained during football games.

eing able to use the patio late in the year, however, was a hit or miss proposition, despite Alabama’s mild weather. So the couple decided to find a way to turn it into a year-round space. “We just love spending time out on our patio,” Tricia says. “In addition to the fireplace, we have a television out there and we’ll often bring out a long table for dinner parties. But we wanted something that would allow us to be out there year-round,” she says. “We’d seen those heavy plastic curtains that restaurants often use, but didn’t like that option. Then, while traveling, we were at a hotel that used large, removable glass panels and we thought that was just the coolest thing,” Tricia comments. So, Tricia and Jim described what they had seen to Roddy Sample, president of Roddy O. Sample & Associates, who had just completed a spiral staircase for the couple’s home.

“We just love spending time out on our patio… We wanted something that would allow us to be out there year-round.”

Sample built panels using 2" x 2" Spanish cedar wood. He fabricated the panels with a groove for the glass and assembled the wood around the glass so the glass is not stopped in. This makes the panels sturdier and stay together when installing and removing. Tempered glass was used instead of Plexiglas so it will not scratch. He then stained the inside of the wood to match the existing ceiling and painted the outside of the wood to match the trim on the house. Each panel is approximately four feet wide and 9-1/2 feet tall. Sample put them together with sex bolts that go together on both ends. He also built a rack in the garage where the panels can be stored in the summer. The plan is for Sample to install the panels each November and take them down every March. According to Tricia, the results are spectacular. “It is so perfect, so tight and so well done, people can’t figure out that you can actually remove the panels,” she says. “And when they are gone, there is no track or any evidence they were ever there.” The project is everything the Holbrooks hoped for and more. It has certainly changed the way they use the space. “It’s really added an extra room to the house,” Tricia says. “We can leave the doors from the living room open and just use that space and it stays pretty warm. We’ve had Christmas parties for our children and we’ve had dinner parties for 45 guests. It’s really great for entertaining.”

Finally, the Holbrooks continue to use Roddy Sample to improve their home. The previous owner and builder of the home did some things incorrectly and Sample is fixing them. He is currently putting leaded glass into all of the home’s windows and replacing some doors. “We’re having him fix our home inch by inch,” chuckles Tricia. “We’re very happy with his craftsmanship.” ■ Source for this article: Roddy O.
