elcome to the latest issue of Remodel Birmingham. I am happy to report that now is a great time to remodel your home. Home values and sales are on the upswing and interest rates remain at historic lows. For the first time in a long while, we can count on the investments we make in our homes paying off. In fact, many of your neighbors have already taken advantage of these improving economic conditions and renovated their homes. Their stories are contained in the pages of this magazine. I know you’ll enjoy reading about a complete kitchen renovation and a master bathroom with old world charm. And if you are thinking about a building or remodeling project of your own, this issue of Remodel Birmingham contains an overview of the 3rd annual Building & Remodeling Expo being held April 5-7 at the Pelham Civic Complex in Pelham, Alabama. We’d love for you to join us for three days of remodeling ideas and products under one roof. Importantly, the key to any successful project is selecting the right professional for your job. To help you, we’ve included an article on Selecting the Right Contractor on page 12. It provides helpful tips on prospecting and selecting the right firm for your next project. And our membership provides you with a host of great companies. For a complete list, be sure to peruse our membership directory in the back of the magazine. Master Builder (MB) / Master Remodeler (MR) The purpose of the Master Builder / Master Remodeler Program certification of the Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders is to further enhance the professionalism of participating members and to provide the consumer with contractors of the highest professional standards. Members of the program must pass a rigorous entry process in order to receive the designation as Master Builder or Master Remodeler. They are screened by a committee of their peers who review customer, supplier and sub-contractor references; check for any current or pending litigation; verify full liability and workman’s compensation insurance coverage; and validate financial stability. Graduate Master Builder (GMB) The ultimate designation for the building professional, the Graduate Master Builder (GMB) designation is for experienced veterans only. Before beginning the GMB designation process, candidates must have the CGB designation, the CGR designation, the CGA designation with five years of building experience, or ten years of building experience and have completed three CGB/CGR/CGA courses. hen choosing a builder or remodeler, you want someone with the skill and expertise to do the job right. In a crowded marketplace, however, identifying a qualified professional can be difficult. That’s why the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) created professional designations that help consumers identify builders and remodelers who have committed themselves to continually improving their skills and being committed to their profession. When a homeowner selects a builder or remodeler with a NAHB professional designation, they are getting a professional with superior training, practical experience, and in-depth knowledge in their chosen specialty.

Finding the right remodeling professional is crucial to the success of your project. There is a lot for homeowners to consider, and they need to be proactive and do their homework if they want to enjoy the building or remodeling process and the end result. Here are some guidelines to make the selection process easier and to help you make a more informed decision. Basic Qualifications “Look for a contractor with a track record of success,” says Joe White, president of Curtis White Companies, Inc., in Leeds. A successful business is one that is established in your area and has survived and thrived over a period of time. Check to be sure the contractor you hire is properly licensed and insured, advises David Shrout, president of David and Karen’s Joint Venture, LLC., in Birmingham. “Contractors in this area must have a license issued from the Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board in addition to county, state and city business licenses,” he says. “Always call the state to ensure the license is current and always ask for a copy of the contractor’s insurance coverage.” In addition, homeowners can also check with the Better Business Bureau and the state’s Licensure Board to see if there are any unresolved complaints against the contractor.

12 GBAHB Remodel Birmingham • www.birminghambuilder.com

Professional Trade Organizations The best place to find top-notch remodeling professionals is a professional trade organization such as the Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders Remodelers Council (GBAHBR Remodelers). Trade organizations help to keep their members informed about the latest products, construction techniques, business practices and industry issues. When you select a GBAHBR Remodeler, you are selecting someone who adheres to a Code of Ethics and is held to the collective standards of the organization. Council members are dedicated to observing the highest standards of integrity, frankness and responsibility in dealing with homeowners. “Because you want someone committed to their profession, look for contractors with professional designations like Master Builder (MB) or Master Remodeler (MR),” comments White. “Contractors with these designations have received significant training, experience and have in-depth knowledge in their profession.” (See Certified Experts on page 8 for a list of Professional Designations.)

Here is a list of questions to help you establish a contractor’s qualifications and reputation to help you find the right person for your remodeling job:

Referrals The best way to find a qualified builder is to be referred by someone who has just had a successful project completed by that firm. Talk to relatives, friends, neighbors and co-workers who have had recent projects done. The key is to get the referral from someone you trust.

• How long have you been in business? •W ho will be assigned as the project supervisor for my job? • What is the time frame for starting my project? • How do you handle this type of job? •D o you have employees or do you use trade contractors?

Photograph courtesy of: Lovette construction

• I s your company a full-service or specialty contractor? • Do you have design services available? •D oes your firm carry workers compensation and liability insurance? Check References/Review Completed Work Any reputable remodeler should be able to provide you with a number of references. Talking to past customers is one of the best ways to check on a firm you are considering.

•D o any of your employees hold trade certifications? •H ow many projects like mine have you completed in the past year? • Will we need a permit for this project? •W hat is the status of your license in the state of Alabama?

Here is a list of questions to ask previous customers: • Could you communicate well with the remodeler? • Were you pleased with the quality of work? •W ere you satisfied with the way your contractor conducted business?

• Was your project completed on schedule? • Was your project completed within budget? •W ere there a lot of change orders that greatly increased the cost of your remodel? • Did the contractor stay in touch throughout the project? • Was the jobsite kept neat? •D id the work crew respect being in and around your home and family?

Photograph courtesy of: Precision Homecraftrs, LLC

• Did the work crew show up on time?

• How was the contractor on follow-up? • Did you have any problems with callbacks?

• Would you use the contractor again without hesitation?

Additionally, there is no substitute for a direct testimonial or for walking through a project and seeing for yourself what a contractor can do. Sometimes it is the best way to judge the quality of a contractor’s work. Good firms are proud of what they do and will be glad to show you their work. Preferred Provider Versus Bidding It is perfectly acceptable to select your company of choice without taking bids. If you have done your due diligence and concluded that a particular contractor has the right skill set for your project, do not hesitate to hire that firm. However, if you are taking bids, make sure each contractor is bidding on the same project, that it is an ‘apples to apples’ comparison. For example, make sure each contractor is planning on using the same quality of materials. Take the time to review each contractor’s presentation so you understand exactly what you are getting. And if the bid is too good to be true, it probably is. Communication And Trust Are Key Ultimately, your goal as a homeowner is to hire a contractor in whom you are confident. He or she needs to be someone you can communicate with and someone you trust. 16 GBAHB Remodel Birmingham • www.birminghambuilder.com

“People need to talk with their contractor about what they want before the job starts,” says Shrout. “Discuss the goals of the project and the materials you want included—finishes, woods, tile materials, etc.—and then put it in writing. A contract makes sure there are no surprises at the end of the job.” Remember, you and your remodeler are tackling your project together. By taking the time to choose the right person for the job, you are assured of getting a remodeling professional committed to the success of your project. Homeowners Cathy and Tommy Luckie experienced nature’s fury up close when a storm’s straight-line winds uprooted a large tree and sent it crashing through a section of their home. An addition they had built onto their ranch home eight years earlier, this newer section of the house included a television room for the couple’s children and an exercise room. Between the falling tree and the rain from the storm, it was a total loss.

A

s the saying goes, however, every cloud has a silver lining. And the couple saw an opportunity to fix several things they did not like about the original addition.

PhotographY Courtesy of: Lovette Construction

A New Plan “Whenever we looked back on the original renovation, we realized there were things we wished we had done differently,” Cathy says. “So, when it became clear we were going to have to rebuild it again, we decided it was an opportunity to fix what we didn’t like and get exactly what we wanted.” At the top of their priority list were a fireplace, a vaulted ceiling and the addition of a new screen porch connecting to the existing deck. Cathy and Tommy had recently worked with Lovette Construction on a small bathroom remodel, so they asked owner Clint Lovette to give them an estimate on the new addition. 18 GBAHB Remodel Birmingham • www.birminghambuilder.com

PhotographY Courtesy of: Lovette Construction

“At first, we talked about simply putting the addition back in its original condition,” Clint says. “Once we started talking about what they really wanted to incorporate, however, it quickly became clear that the new addition was going to be drastically different. That’s when we put the brakes on and got an architect—Carey Hollingsworth— involved in the project,” he says. The new floor plan, which took a few months to develop, incorporated a slightly new floor plan and all the other features the homeowners’ desired for the project. The Renovation The first step in the renovation involved demolishing the old addition down to its foundation. Lovette Construction also had to do some mold remediation due to water that had gotten into the space. In the original space, one would walk down the hallway from the kitchen into the addition and the first thing he or she would see was the exercise room. The new plan swapped the location of the two rooms and installed the new fireplace so it is the new focal point of the remodel. A small bar area was also added. Additionally, the exercise room is hidden by reclaimed barn doors, the first of many reclaimed materials used in the new space. The hardwood floors are reclaimed oak from a factory in Eutaw, Alabama. The screen porch ceiling and bar area walls are skins from the milling of reclaimed flooring and beams. The scissor trusses in the main den are reclaimed sinker pine from Mobile Bay and were used to dry dock submarines in WWII. These trusses were milled into 4x8 beams and then custom fit and fabricated on site. The vaulted ceilings are treated with a 1”x 6” tongue and groove pine and stained. The fireplace is limestone. The floor of the screen porch is reclaimed heart pine flooring.

PhotographY Courtesy of: Lovette Construction

“From our perspective, this project is unique in the fact that we did use so many reclaimed items,” Lovette says, “from the floors to the trusses in the ceiling to the beam skins and barn doors. When you are working with these types of materials, not everything is perfect, so it can be quite a challenge.” Installing the trusses meant getting 4” x 8” beams from the company and manufacturing them to fit on site. Essentially, every beam is done individually and put together as it goes up. Working with reclaimed flooring is a similar challenge. While it is run through a mill, it is not exact and it takes attention to detail to make it work. “There is a significant amount of planning on the front end in terms of material location and selection on a job like this one,” Lovette says, “but the homeowners’ desire to use many reclaimed materials throughout the space really makes the renovation special. It gives the entire space a whole new feel,” he says. Exceeding Expectations According to Cathy, the space is even better than she imagined. “The space is so much more inviting than it was before,” she says. “It was such an odd layout before, you could not do a lot with the room. Now, more people can gather in here and even though it is still family friendly, it is a bit more of an adult gathering space,” she says. “We definitely spend more time in it.” “I especially love the trusses and the beam skins we used in the screened-in porch and on the walls in the bar area,” Cathy comments. “The craftsmanship and attention to detail from Clint and his team is just amazing.” The Right Partner “When we were selecting our contractor, we really liked Clint because he was easy to talk to and we felt that he understood what we wanted to do,” Cathy says. “We did not have the same type of relationship with our contractor eight years ago. Clint and his team were so responsive and we had a sense of camaraderie that we were in this together,” she says. “And that relationship shows in the end result. We just love our new addition.” 20

The Newest Trends In Welcome to the new home: bold blacks, sleek greys, seamless storage, open design. Kitchens are becoming as livable and as much of a social hub as the family living room. Your new dream home awaits and can include these top kitchen trends of 2013.

Further, cabinets are very fluid and unnoticeable units these days. “Highly functional cabinet accessories and pull-outs make storage space more productive and these amenities continue to grow in popularity,” said Rob Baugher, owner of Baugher, Inc. in Homewood. “On base cabinets, everybody wants drawers and virtually no doors. If doors are required, clients want pull-outs behind them.” Open Concept The kitchen is the true hub of almost any home. As such, the kitchen is opening up and is getting more integrated with the rest of the house. “People want the open space so they can interact with other people. They don’t want to be holed into the kitchen,” said Jewel McKay of McKay Building Company, Inc. To meet the demand, designers are seeing homeowners knocking down walls to open up the kitchen to the rest of the house. More and more islands are being added to kitchens so people can watch their kids do homework, socialize, or set out food. Designers are even seeing design trends changing in line with the open concept kitchen. Baugher commented, “The kitchen is getting more thoroughly integrated with the surrounding spaces. Clients want more than just taking down walls. There is even more cohesion with the design and finishes between kitchen and adjacent family living areas and specialty-use areas like laundry, pantry, and office.” Creative Backsplashes Backsplashes are a mainstay for many kitchens. While tile mosaics are out in the kitchen, designers are seeing brick lay above stoves and some owners are opting for three-dimensional stone patterns. Glass tiles are being incorporated into backsplashes and stainless steel backsplashes are growing in popularity as well.

Kitchens With today’s modern family spending more time in the kitchen, many families find that this is the congregating area where they tend to spend the most time together. Here are some of the most popular upgrades homeowners have on their must-have list when remodeling their kitchen. Increased Storage Homeowners want a sleeker look in their kitchens, and are opting for more cabinet space. To meet this demand, more homeowners are putting in islands, which add extra storage as well as more work space.

Kitchen Colors Darker colors and wood grains still add a timeless appeal to kitchens. “Subdued colors and wood grain are on the increase while light, painted finishes are either holding steady or decreasing,” said Baugher. “The color palette has swung toward more stained finishes on cabinets in subdued, warm colors. Really dark finishes like mochas and charcoals are showing up in baths, not so much in kitchens but growing.” Darker polished nickel in the greys, golds, and browns is still chosen for its durability. It will not pit over the years like chrome can. Many homeowners are still opting for dark cabinet faces and warm wood finishes, however cherry wood is definitely out. Many designers are seeing shades of grey incorporated heavily as well, and grey islands are huge. The more distinctive colors like the reds, blues, and greens in appliances are out, except for some of the highest-end appliances. Kitchen appliances still hold steady with stainless steel being the most popular, seconded by black. Overall, grey or darker colors are the way to go for that popular sleek and contemporary look.

hen Elizabeth and Clyde Smith originally built their home in 1998, she was never really happy with the kitchen. So when the time came to remodel, she had plenty of new ideas. “I had picked out beautiful white granite for the countertops and, at the last minute, it didn’t arrive. I had to pick something out in a day and I never liked it,” she says. “It made the kitchen dark and I wanted light and airy.” I also spent a lot of time thinking about the traffic flow through the room,” she says. “In the original design, people would often gather around the area where I was cooking and I wanted to get them out of the work triangle. I wanted to give them a better place to gather and that lead to the new island.” Finally, the original kitchen had a large pantry that had become a gathering place for junk, which separated the existing refrigerator from the rest of the kitchen. Elizabeth wanted to move her office from the upstairs to the main level, so she had the idea to open up this area as part of the kitchen. Because she had been perusing magazines for ideas over the years, Elizabeth had some specific ideas for her new kitchen. To start with, she had a picture of an island she liked, so she had her contractor, Precision Homecrafters, design and build it. The rest of the kitchen design would flow around this island.

The New Design This project took the existing space with its large island and incorporated an adjacent closed pantry which had a lot of wasted space. It doubled the size of the existing bar, redesigned the island to create more usable space and maintained some of the existing cabinets. Traditional residential appliances were replaced with a Wolf stove and Sub Zero refrigerator. Ventilation was added for the new range. Alabama white marble was carefully selected and used throughout. The previous pantry area was converted to a butler’s pantry and office niche. The existing island and some existing cabinets were relocated to the basement for a kitchen area in the basement. A load bearing wall between the kitchen and pantry was removed and the existing bar area was made wider. New perimeter cabinets were made to match some of the existing ones kept in the design. All new trim was designed to include multiple piece crown moulding. The new island houses the microwave and a warming drawer. It also features large drawers for pot and pan storage. A very small bar was enlarged to accommodate an undercounter wine cooler and ice maker. Cabinets above provide for plenty of glass storage and cabinets below handle the normal adult beverages. The open butler’s pantry provides space for canned goods, extra platters, cookware, etc. The island also includes a raised bar for sitting, which allows guests to be a part of the activity as meals are prepared, and doubles as a buffet line when larger groups are entertained. Carefully selected glass door cabinets provide for display areas of nicer glass and art. The traditional residential designer kitchen of the 1990s has been converted to a user-friendly kitchen in which both the novice and gourmet chef can enjoy working and entertaining.

Design HIghlights “I think the island is the prettiest part of the kitchen,” Elizabeth comments. “Additionally, I think the new work triangle is so much more efficient. I love the Wolf range.” “It is really important to figure out how you want to use your space before you start a renovation,” she emphasizes. “George Williams and his team really helped us make the most of the space.” “I cannot say enough about George and his team,” Elizabeth stresses. “They were so committed to our project and their honesty and integrity are unparalleled.” Future Plans Elizabeth and Clyde lived through the remodeling process by taking their existing island and old appliances and making a small kitchen in their basement. “My next project idea is to redo our master bathroom,” Elizabeth says, “but whether or not I can talk my husband into another renovation remains to be seen,” she chuckles.

A Charming H Design aving grown up in the Midwest, living on both coasts and in the Deep South, Sara and John Rohwedder have developed an eclectic point of view when it comes to home design. So when it came to renovating their master bathroom, they drew upon many different influences. “Our whole house is kind of a collection of the different places that we’ve lived,” says Sara. “For instance, we grew up antiquing in the Midwest so that’s a big influence.” “I am very eclectic and when I see something I have to love it,” she comments. “Usually it has a special meaning to me—I was with my mom or my kids or my daughter-in-law—and it reminds me of that time in our lives. There’s a lot of warmth that comes from that. It is what makes it a home.” Prior to the renovation, the master bathroom was original to the home. Built some 20 years ago, it featured lots of cultured marble and a tile floor. Mostly white with a little pink for accent, the Rohwedders decided to basically gut the room and start over. “I started by gathering my ideas and looking at different products I wanted to include,” Sara says. One tool she used was the website Pinterest, a content sharing site that allows members to “pin” images, videos and other objects to their pin board. “Pinterest is a great tool for anyone who wants to remodel because you can look on the website and if you see something you love, you can click on the picture and it will link you to another site where you can get that product.”

A New Bathroom with Old World Charm Once Sara had her ideas together, it became clear that old world charm would be the underlying theme in the new bathroom. To achieve this look and feel, the space uses warm colors and tones, while accenting the bath with unique details; the space features gothic arched niche and custom furniture style his and her vanities. Tall recessed cabinetry flanks either side. The design retains modern plumbing fixtures with a nod to the sophistication of the overall space. Featured is a reproduction claw foot tub which is centered under the large window. Alongside is the master shower which blends seamlessly with its linear travertine tile and slate accents. Those same slate accents form a detail border around the perimeter of the room. The remodeled space is in high contrast in comparison to what was there before. “The cabinetry is especially interesting,” Sara comments. “The sinks are Kohler and they are one piece and cast iron. I walked into a plumbing sup26 GBAHB Remodel Birmingham • www.birminghambuilder.com

ply and said I want them because they are so different. And I wanted the piece underneath to be like an old dresser. So our contractor, Case Design/ Remodeling, had someone who did cabinetry build it from scratch. I got to work with them and see the cabinets come to life,” she says. “Each cabinet has a plaque in it signed by everyone who worked on creating them.”

A Great Relationship with Their Remodeler “I had a picture in my mind of what I wanted and really needed a contractor who could help me get there,” Sara comments. “I first saw Case Design/Remodeling in Remodel Birmingham and they had won a lot of awards for their work, including a bathroom, and I thought ‘that’s who I want to talk to,’” she says. “Tom (Coan, GCR, president of Case Design/Remodeling) came out and talked with us and we felt they were the right people for our job,” Sara says. “They have such talented people working for them and they have a great group of subs. They really went above and beyond making me happy.” “I told them I know what I want and you need to help me get there,” she says. “And they did. We just love the results.” Advice to Other Homeowners “I think in any renovation, the biggest challenge is taking the picture you have in your head and having the patience to get to it,” Sara stresses. “As a homeowner you have to be really patient with the people you work with and have great communication with your contractor. Case let me have my say and they were all about making sure we were happy with the process and the end result.” Sources for this article: Case Design/Remodeling 3118 Bellwood Drive, Suite 120 Birmingham, AL 35243 Contact: Tom Coan, CGR Phone: (205) 968-6000 Birmingham.case.remodeling.com

The Importance of Getting

GOOD

I am often asked where to go, or who to listen to for answers when it comes to making major decisions regarding people’s homes. Some of the questions we grapple with are whether to stay where we are or to move. When our homes no longer satisfy our needs or those of our families, we are next faced with a host of decisions surrounding finding another home or remodeling the home we are in. The decision to remodel or renovate your home then leads to other questions and choices. Key among your decisions is choosing the right people to listen to.

Some of the areas that must be addressed include the type and extent of your renovation and the selection of the professionals that you will work with. I have heard of so many people struggling to get the right answers and sometimes simply getting advice from the wrong sources. Often those sources are well meaning friends and just as often the advice is coming from the internet. As most of us realize, we have become a society of people who rely on Google for our answers. As beneficial as the internet can be, it is not without its liabilities. Just like it is important to know that you are getting the right answers from the people you go to, it is equally important to ensure that the advice you listen to from the internet is sound. With regard to the internet, the simple answer is to verify the information with a professional who knows and understands the issues you are dealing with. Over the years I have heard so many stories of disaster and near disaster resulting from people listening to and taking advice from the wrong people or the wrong sources. Although you will want to learn from others and get different viewpoints in making your decisions, it is important to guard against situations of the blind leading the blind. As we all realize, we sometimes find we actually gain some real nuggets of wisdom from listening to others. So what is the difference, and when do you know that you are getting help instead of more confusion regarding your situation?

There are as many ways that you can be helped by others as there are ways that you can be hurt. Of course we could reverse that statement and focus on the ways you can be hurt. But instead let’s look at the important elements needed in seeking help. Avoid asking too many people for advice One of the frustrating things I often see is the person who asks everyone for their opinion. This can be dangerous for a number of reasons. The biggest problem with asking too many people is that most of them will not be qualified to give you sound advice. Part of this “disqualification” is that they most likely don’t have all the facts, or they don’t have the necessary experience in the area, or they don’t have the time and attention to put into helping you with your questions. Although your family, friends and neighbors usually mean well, they are often not equipped to assist in certain decisions. Even though everyone has their own ideas or opinions about certain subjects, they usually don’t have all the facts, knowledge or experience needed for sound decision making. Although this is true in a lot of areas of life, it is especially true when it involves any decisions or plans requiring professional expertise. We have all heard of the arm chair attorney, accountant or doctor, but too many of us ignore the importance of seeking professional advice when it comes to home improvement. For decisions regarding the design or construction of our home, we are safer when we rely on the expertise and experience of a professional. (For some tips on selecting a contractor for your next remodeling project, see page 12.) Be sure you give all the information to the professionals When it comes to getting professional advice, it is critical that you let your advisor know all the facts of the situation; otherwise even the professional might lead you astray. Of course, anyone who is a real professional will strive to get all the relevant data before giving their opinion. Unfortunately I have seen too many cases of that not happening. For example, if someone needs a new lawn installed to make their house more saleable, it is important to give the landscaper the information about the impending sale. This enables him to focus on the goal of selling the house, rather than establishing an elaborate landscape.

In general, you will get the best advice from the professionals you speak with by giving all the information. Whether that professional is a landscaper as in the example above, or an architect, builder, remodeler or even financial advisor, these professionals need all the information to help you. Unfortunately, giving incomplete or inaccurate information will result in an incomplete proposal and an inaccurate price estimate. Don’t be focused only on price The following example illustrates how you can get a much better product by giving enough information to the professionals you deal with. I recently spoke with someone who just purchased a house and wanted built-in book shelves. They told me: “I told the person what I wanted and asked her for a bid in 3 different ways. She gave them. Then she went over how many books I could get with each of the different pricing models. We also discussed options we could add like color for the room, increasing the size of the shelves so they won’t bow from the weight of the books, making the unit flexible so it could be used as an entertainment center, etc. If I had just focused on price, I would have had a white 30 GBAHB Remodel Birmingham • www.birminghambuilder.com

bookshelf with standard ¾” shelves which may have bowed and wouldn’t have flexibility, ultimately, a bookshelf that didn’t meet my needs.” Get the right professional for the right job The various professionals who can and will assist us in improving our homes include architects, designers, builders, remodelers and landscape professionals. To ensure that the systems in our homes are kept safe and in good condition there are many service professionals including plumbing, heating and HVAC specialists, electricians, and those who service our appliances and any other systems we have in our homes. Another aspect of choosing a professional to work with is to understand the differences in professionals. Although someone may be a professional building framer, that does not mean they are qualified as an electrician. Someone who is an excellent handyman will most likely not be qualified to do a remodeling project or build a house. I recommend you keep those differences in mind when selecting the professionals to listen to and to work with.

Ultimately, it is your decision Even though it is important that we ultimately make our own decisions, we all recognize that there will be times that we may want to seek outside help. In doing so, there will often be conflicting opinions, so it will be important that you make sure all the data is available to anyone you consult and that you ultimately make your own decisions. When it comes to prospective clients seeking advice, the best you can do for them is to ensure that their advisers are also fully informed. Our remodeling project required a lot of trust. As an exterior remodel, you don’t really know what exactly you’re in for until the old exterior comes off and you see what the extent of damage is underneath. Chris was great every step of the way, offering us options and advice on which option he thought made the most sense from a quality vs. cost perspective. In the end, I feel like we not only ended up with a great-looking house, but a more energy efficient house as well. Chris had just gotten his Green Builder Certification so we incorporated a lot of what he had learned into our project. The “green” part of the project began with an in-depth home energy audit which helped us to make more informed decisions like what type of insulation to use and where. Today my 20+ year old home exceeds the requirements of an Energy Star rated home! And we are loving the resulting power bills – we have a 4200 sq. foot home, keep the temperature between 74 and 76 and our bill with Alabama power for June, 2011 (remember how unusually hot it was – the highs were from 95 to 99 degrees for 20 out of 30 days) was only $288.88! ~ Scott Wepfer Before
