Certified Experts PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS SET PROFESSIONAL BUILDERS AND REMODELERS APART When choosing a builder or remodeler, you want someone with the skill and expertise to do the job right. In a crowded marketplace, however, identifying a qualified professional can be difficult. That’s why the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) created professional designations that help consumers identify builders and remodelers who have committed themselves to continually improving their skills and being committed to their profession. When a homeowner selects a builder or remodeler with a NAHB professional designation, they are getting a professional with superior training, practical experience, and in-depth knowledge in their chosen specialty.
Certified Graduate Builder (CGB)
The CGB designation means your builder has met prescribed standards of practice, possess at least two years building industry experience, has a proven track record of successful project management, has completed a comprehensive education curriculum, and pledges to uphold the program’s Code of Ethics. The CGB course is designed to emphasize business and project management skills as the key to a professional building operation.
Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR)
The CGR course emphasizes the development of business management skills as the key to a professional remodeling operation. Remodelers holding the CGR designation meet prescribed standards of business practice, possess a minimum of five years remodeling industry experience, have a proven track record of successful remodeling projects, complete a comprehensive education curriculum, and pledge to uphold the program’s Code of Ethics.
Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) The CAPS designation program teaches the technical, business management and customer service skills essential for remodelers doing home modifications for the aging-in-place. The NAHB Remodelers Council, in collaboration with the AARP, developed this program to provide comprehensive, practical, market specific information about working with older and maturing adults to remodel their homes for aging-in-place.
Certified Graduate Associate (CGA) The CGA certificate program offers associate members an opportunity to enhance their knowledge of the fundamentals of the home building industry. Modeled after the CGB
curriculum, this designation is attained by completing three required and three elective courses which focus on improved management skills and business performance. The CGA designation is maintained by completing one course annually.
Certified Green Professional (CGP)
The National Association of Home Builders’ Certified Green Professional™ designation recognizes builders, remodelers and other industry professionals who incorporate green building principles into homes – without driving up the cost of construction. Classwork leading to the designation provides a solid background in green building methods, as well as the tools to reach customers, from the organization leading the charge to provide market-driven green building solutions to the home building industry.
Master Builder (MB) / Master Remodeler (MR)
The purpose of the Master Builder / Master Remodeler Program certification of the Greater Birmingham Association of Home Builders is to further enhance the professionalism of participating members and to provide the consumer with contractors of the highest professional standards. Members of the program must pass a rigorous entry process in order to receive the designation as Master Builder or Master Remodeler. They are screened by a committee of their peers who review customer, supplier and subcontractor references; check for any current or pending litigation; verify full liability and workman’s compensation insurance coverage; and validate financial stability. Membership is reviewed on a yearly basis and failure to meet the program’s requirements can warrant disqualification from the program.
Graduate Master Builder (GMB)
The ultimate designation for the building professional, the Graduate Master Builder (GMB) designation is for experienced veterans only. Before beginning the GMB designation process, candidates must have the CGB designation, the CGR designation, the CGA designation with five years of building experience, or ten years of building experience and have completed three CGB/CGR/ CGA courses. GMB course topics include risk management and insurance, negotiating, financial management and quality construction, to name a few. They are more advanced with in-depth instruction geared for experienced building professionals.

DECKING BY SHARON GLORIOSO
BY SHARON GLORIOSO
With many options and products to choose from, here are some top decking trends and popular products in the decking world. Many homeowners consider their backyards and outdoor living areas on their property to be critical parts of their home. As such, they often spend as much time and money on outdoor living areas as they do on indoor rooms and additions. Large three-season porches, decks and covered patios are turning up on more new homes and remodeling projects. Depending on where you live, you probably like to spend time outdoors and enjoy the natural atmosphere, fresh air and nice weather. With spring just around the corner, now may be the time to start thinking about adding a new deck to enjoy the nicer weather coming before we know it. Extending living space to the outdoors, integrating home and landscape, making use of damp or uneven terrain, and giving a contemporary look to a traditionally styled home are just a few of the ways that decks make life a little better. Now that

the housing market is picking up over the past two years, deck manufacturers and suppliers are expanding the options that they are giving to their customers and consumers are taking advantage of their options. ADDING VALUE TO YOUR HOME
As far as the decking business is concerned, all options are great and adding a deck to your home tends to add to the value of your house. According to TimberTech, adding a deck to your home not only adds value to your lifestyle, but it adds value to your home. When you add a deck to your home, you’ll recoup much of your investment when you sell your home. In some areas, the return is more than 100 percent. But when it comes time to decide what type of deck is best for your home, it is ultimately the homeowner’s decision.

SO MANY OPTIONS
WOOD-PLASTIC COMPOSITE
When deciding what type of deck is best for you and your home, there are many things to consider. For example, if a homeowner decides to build a wood deck, they must keep in mind that all of the wood that is used in the outdoors must be protected against decay and insect attack. On the other hand, a homeowner might choose a composite deck. When considering what materials to use, TimberTech suggests that consider your answers to following questions: • What will the traffic be like? • How much sun exposure will it get? • Will your deck be near water or surrounded by water? • What is your style – traditional, contemporary or country? • Are you building a new deck or replacing an existing one? • Will you primarily use it during the day or night or both? • Is it on a first floor or second floor, or both? • Is it important to you that the fasteners are hidden? By answering these basic questions, any good manufacturer can lead you in right direction. Also, they can give you some suggestions of what materials you should use. Here are the three most current common types of decks:
These practical decking options are designed for the valueconscious customer looking for a lifetime of low maintenance. • Value-priced • Traditional wood-like look • Low Maintenance CAPPED COMPOSITE
Capped with a protective polymer shell with HydroLock™ technology, this plank is resistant to the elements that every deck endures. • VertiGrain™ surface won’t trap dirt or dust • 25-Year Fade and Stain Warranty • VertiGrain™ pattern mimics real wood look PVC (POLYVINYL CHLORIDE)
PVC engineering guarantees the ultimate in scratch, mildew and stain resistance. • Flat grain surface texture • Does not require pre-drilling • Scratch Resistant

Before deciding which type of product to use, homeowners should consider what their goals are and what their budget is. While the composite, Ipe, and PVC deck materials are far superior to the traditional pressure treated material, they are also considerably more expensive. DECKING TODAY

According to suppliers, the decking business has gone through an interesting evolution over the years. In the past, what most people wanted was wood decks, with cedar being the most popular. The next trend was composite, which proved to be even more efficient with less maintenance. You don’t have to stain it, it won’t warp like wood, and in general it’s less maintenance. Now the industry wants even more less maintenance options. “We’ve been using TimberTech to build custom decks and screened in porches for a number of years with great success,” says John Crews of Archadeck of Birmingham. “When these products were first introduced, people bought them because they would last—not necessarily because they looked good. Now, they last, there are a variety of brands available and they are great looking.” Most building supply stores offer a variety of products including Trex, Evolve, Wolf Deck products, Evergrain, TimberTech, Ipe and Pressure Treated. Trex is a popular material, which most people are familiar with and Evolve is a decking product that is made of recycled milk jugs. Many customers view composite decking products as ‘greener.’ They can be recycled and are very low maintenance. Most composites are easy to work with and simple to install. Fiberon sustainable decking products, for instance, count towards LEED points for recycled content. Earthfriendly and sustainable, Fiberon products are made from locally sourced, discarded wood flour generated from other wood processes and recycled plastic that would normally go to waste. According to Crews, the options are unlimited. “Today’s products are available in a wide array of decking profiles, colors, surface textures and finishes,” he says. “The internet is a great place for customers to familiarize themselves with all of the options available.” Most suppliers will let you take some samples home with you to make sure you like the color that you choose. It is a good idea to take them outside in the morning and in the evening. You will have the deck that you build for a very long time, so you want to make sure that you are happy with the way that it looks.

TimberTech boards are covered by a 25-year limited warranty stating that its products will be free from material defects in workmanship and materials, and will not split, splinter, rot or suffer structural damage from termites or fungal decay. In fact, most manufacturers have a limited lifetime warranty against the common problems of composites and wood. Extending living space to outdoors is just one of many ways that decks make life a little better. Do your homework and find out what type of deck is best for you and your home.

The terms “universal design” and “aging-in-place” are often used interchangeably in the building and remodeling industry. While related, however, they are not the same thing. Agingin-place generally refers to design accommodations that will support the changing needs of homeowners as they advance in age. Universal design, on the other hand, involves the use of products and spaces to their full potential regardless of the occupant’s age or life status. According to its advocates at the Center for Universal Design at NC State University (see its seven principles of Universal Design on page 16), “Universal Design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.” Simply put, it involves designing for the lifespan of the home and its occupants. So your home will accommodate you even as your needs change. “We are seeing more people interested in universal design than ever before,” says Mike McKay, CAPS, CGR, of Oak Alley. “Homeowners are planning to stay in their homes longer and universal design provides features useful for any age group, from young children to mature adults.” A family with small children might include multi-level countertops in their kitchen and bathroom designs. Active families might include a playroom that can later be converted into a gym or exercise room. A couple in their 40s or 50s might want their new or remodeled floor plan to keep all the living space on the main level. Or, they might want to add a mother-in-law suite for the future. And, finally, “aging-inplace” features like curb-less showers and grab bars in the bathroom might be included if they see themselves living in the home during their retirement years. “Homeowners already renovating tend to be particularly interested in and receptive to universal design features since they are already making changes,” McKay comments. “Additionally, products enhancing accessibility have become more attractive and less institutional looking. Whether it’s lever-style door handles, comfort height toilets or lighting options, aesthetics have greatly improved.”
UNIVERSAL DESIGN FEATURES FOR THE BATHROOM
• Zero-threshold showers offer homeowners both easy access and attractive design. Flush with the bathroom floor, they often feature a trench drain to contain water in the shower area. • A slip-resistant, textured floor can help protect both children and adults against accidents in the shower. • Grab bars in the tub or shower area or next to the toilet provide safety and support for any user. • A ledge or seating area on the edge of the bath tub is great for bathing young children who need to be supervised while in the tub or for an adult who needs easy access to the tub. UNIVERSAL DESIGN FEATURES FOR THE KITCHEN
• Refrigerators, cooling drawers and dishwashers can be built into drawers and cabinets for easier access and enhanced design. • An induction cooktop offers energy efficiency and improved safety compared to conventional models. Induction stoves do not feature open flames and the surface remains relatively neutral in temperature during cooking. • Leaving empty space under countertops around the sink or cooking area is valuable for seated access and flexibility. • A lower or adjustable height countertop and sink can make it easier to use by young children or someone who uses a wheelchair. • Roll-out shelves and pull-out cabinets make it easier to see and access dishes, pans and other kitchen tools. UNIVERSAL DESIGN FEATURES FOR THE REST OF THE HOME
• No step entry into the home and its main rooms (no stairs). • One-story living where the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom are all located on the main level. • Wider doorways and hallways that make it easier for everyone and everything to pass from one space to the other. • Better lighting helps everyone, not just those with poor vision. UNIVERSAL DESIGN The design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. The authors, a working group of architects, product designers, engineers and environmental design researchers, collaborated to establish the following Principles of Universal Design to guide a wide range of design disciplines including environments, products, and communications. These seven principles may be applied to evaluate existing designs, guide the design process and educate both designers and consumers about the characteristics of more usable products and environments. PRINCIPLE ONE: Equitable Use
The design is useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities. Guidelines: 1a. Provide the same means of use for all users: identical whenever possible; equivalent when not. 1b. Avoid segregating or stigmatizing any users. 1c. Provisions for privacy, security, and safety should be equally available to all users. 1d. Make the design appealing to all users. PRINCIPLE TWO: Flexibility in Use
The design accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities. Guidelines: 2a. Provide choice in methods of use. 2b. Accommodate right- or left-handed access and use. 2c. Facilitate the user’s accuracy and precision. 2d. Provide adaptability to the user’s pace. PRINCIPLE THREE: Simple and Intuitive Use
Use of the design is easy to understand, regardless of the user’s experience, knowledge, language skills, or current concentration level. Guidelines: 3a. Eliminate unnecessary complexity. 3b. Be consistent with user expectations and intuition. 3c. Accommodate a wide range of literacy and language skills. 3d. Arrange information consistent with its importance. 3e. Provide effective prompting and feedback during and after task completion. PRINCIPLE FOUR: Perceptible Information
The design communicates necessary information effectively to the user, regardless of ambient conditions or the user’s sensory abilities. Guidelines: 4a. Use different modes (pictorial, verbal, tactile) for redundant presentation of essential information. 4b. Provide adequate contrast between essential information and its surroundings. 4c. Maximize “legibility” of essential information. 4d. Differentiate elements in ways that can be described (i.e., make it easy to give instructions or directions). 4e. Provide compatibility with a variety of techniques or devices used by people with sensory limitations. 16 GBAHB Remodel Birmingham • www.birminghambuilder.com
PRINCIPLE FIVE: Tolerance for Error
The design minimizes hazards and the adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions. Guidelines: 5a. Arrange elements to minimize hazards and errors: most used elements, most accessible; hazardous elements eliminated, isolated, or shielded. 5b. Provide warnings of hazards and errors. 5c. Provide fail safe features. 5d. Discourage unconscious action in tasks that require vigilance. PRINCIPLE SIX: Low Physical Effort
The design can be used efficiently and comfortably and with a minimum of fatigue. Guidelines: 6a. Allow user to maintain a neutral body position. 6b. Use reasonable operating forces. 6c. Minimize repetitive actions. 6d. Minimize sustained physical effort. PRINCIPLE SEVEN: Size and Space for Approach and Use
Appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of user’s body size, posture, or mobility. Guidelines: 7a. Provide a clear line of sight to important elements for any seated or standing user. 7b. Make reach to all components comfortable for any seated or standing user. 7c. Accommodate variations in hand and grip size. 7d. Provide adequate space for the use of assistive devices or personal assistance. Note: The Principles of Universal Design address only universally usable design, while the practice of design involves more than consideration for usability. Designers must also incorporate other considerations such as economic, engineering, cultural, gender, and environmental concerns in their design processes. These Principles offer designers guidance to better integrate features that meet the needs of as many users as possible. Economic Optimism
BY LORRAINE HART, PRESIDENT, IDEAL CONSULTING SERVICES, INC.
Fortunately for all of us, the economy is on the road to recovery. In some areas of the county, the recovery is further along than other areas. Although the rate of recovery varies from region to region, we are seeing improvements throughout the country. The common element is that the economy is improving. Latest economic news reports that unemployment is down to the lowest point it has been in the last five years. This is partly the result of more jobs being created, not simply people giving up and dropping out of the work force. Economists have tied the economic recovery to the sustained growth in the housing market, citing the housing market as one of the main drivers of the economic recovery. What does this mean for you? Depending on where you are in the home ownership cycle, it may mean something different for each of you. For pre-home owners, it offers a sense of promise that home ownership can be a reality. For homeowners with the need to expand or upgrade, this may signal the time to sell and move on to a larger home, or it may be the time to create that extension you have been hoping for. For those with changing needs due to maturing children, it offers opportunities for downsizing or converting a larger home to accommodate returning young adults. Whether you fit one of the three categories mentioned above or are somewhere in between, you can be optimistic that there are and will continue to be opportunities to enhance your home and lifestyle. “There does seem to be some renewed interest in remodeling projects over the past few months in our area,” says Tom Coan, CGR and president of Case Design/ Remodeling in Birmingham. “Customers are, however, a lot more thoughtful and discerning than they were in the past. I think the relationship between categories of projects—baths, kitchen, additions, etc.—is about the same, but people are paying more attention to how much they are spending and whether or not it will give them a return on their investment.” Many of the scenarios above may lead to remodeling or renovating your home. Whether you buy for the first time or move up to a larger house, it is often the case that the new house will need enhancements to fully satisfy the changing needs of you and your family. For those of you who choose to remain in your existing home, there are many options including extensions, room additions or re-configurations of the space within the house. It is never too soon to start to build in universal design or “aging in place” options that will allow you to continue to stay in your home for the foreseeable future. 18 GBAHB Remodel Birmingham • www.birminghambuilder.com

With the improvements in the economy you can now be more confident that your investments will pay off. They will pay off by giving you what you need and want for the immediate future, and they will pay off when the time comes to sell. EDITOR’S NOTE:

A Timeless Classic
First built in 1929, the English Tudor-style cottage D.A. Tynes and her husband purchased 23 years ago was the right home for them at the time. Her husband was raised in the area, literally a block away, and they wanted to come back to the neighborhood. Over the years, as their needs changed and their family grew, they have done a series of remodels. An interior designer herself, D.A. had been thinking about making the home’s four bathrooms her next project, when a series of issues in each bathroom made the project more time sensitive. “I wanted to remodel the bathrooms anyway, but a hole in one of the shower pans worked in my favor,” she chuckles. “If we were going to have to deal with a series of issues, I figured we might as well deal with them all at once.”
So with the goal of the project to update the bathrooms and still make them look like part of the home’s original design, D.A. got started. IDEAS FOR THE PROJECT
One might think it would be easy for an interior designer to come up with ideas for her own remodeling project, but according to D.A., it was a bit more difficult. “It’s really hard for a designer to do her own house because there are so many neat things you see every day when you are doing projects for other people,” she says. “You actually have to reel yourself in a bit. I would say to myself, ‘ok, I love these things, but what’s going to be the most appropriate for my situation.’”
20 GBAHB Remodel Birmingham • www.birminghambuilder.com
“I tend to shy away from trendy ideas,” D.A. comments. “My style is probably described as timeless. Especially given the age of my own home, I can’t just put in what’s trendy and pull it off.” In the end, she focused on a consistent look for all four bathrooms (three already completed and the fourth now underway). White Carrara marble tile, countertops and backsplashes with dark vanities offer a classic feel. Bathtubs were removed in favor of tiled shower stalls to meet the needs of teenage children. And niches for towels and toiletries were designed into each room. “I really like niches because they provide a place to put important things,” says D.A. “Closets tend to be black holes for a bunch of stuff you don’t need.”

To differentiate the room’s designs, D.A. focused on using a different grid pattern for the floor tile. Floor plans were also adjusted to make the sinks/vanities the focal points of each bathroom.
and reframe the flooring, walls and ceilings.” The result of the project is that all of the bathrooms in the home combine modern amenities with the timeless look of the original home’s style.
PROJECT CHALLENGES
SELECTING HER CONTRACTOR
Every remodeling project has its challenges, especially when the original home is 85 years old. All of the bathrooms were gutted and the plumbing and electrical were redone. “A unique part of this project involved leveling all the floors and making sure the walls were plumb,” says Clint Lovette, CGR, of Lovette Construction in Birmingham. “Homes settle, of course, and in houses this age, contractors often made the walls plumb with plaster work. So we had to go in
D.A. did not have to look far to choose the right contractor for her project. She was working with Lovette Construction on one of her client’s projects and was very impressed. “I fell in love with the team at Lovette,” she says. “They are very easy to work with and they are always looking out for the next guy. And you don’t find that in most companies anymore,” she stresses. “We had already established a nice working relationship,” Clint adds, “and
that’s so important for a project to be successful.” ADVICE TO OTHER HOMEOWNERS
According to D.A., one of the keys to surviving any renovation is being flexible, especially if you have an older home. “You have to be willing to put up with a little chaos and be willing to live in the middle of it,” she says, “knowing that at the end of the project, it’s going to be so much better. There are bound to be bumps in the road, but they always work out for the best.” Sources For This Article: Lovette Construction 133 West Oxmoor Road, Suite 221 Birmingham, AL 35209 Contact: Clint Lovette, CGR | (205) 401-2488 www.lovetteconstruction.com

A BIG BEAUTIFUL
Homeowners Cathie and John built their Williamsburg-style colonial in 1979 and eventually raised their three children in it. After more than 30 years, they decided it was time for a new kitchen, so they demolished the existing kitchen down to the subfloor in order to create the kitchen of their dreams. “My wife wanted a new kitchen with a big island and the original space just wasn’t large enough to accommodate one,” says John. “So the new design was 5-1/2 feet wider and eight feet longer to give us the room we needed.” Cathie had some pretty firm ideas about what she wanted and she worked with her close friend Cindy Bartlett, of Bartlett Interiors in Vestavia, to bring them to fruition. Working together, they came up with a country, French-style look for the new kitchen. In fact, they spent approximately a

year collecting information and touring homes in Birmingham to firm up the ideas that would drive the renovation. The results are nothing less than stunning. THE RENOVATED SPACE
One end of the kitchen, facing the backyard, opens up into a dining room and sitting area. Surrounded by large, beautiful Marvin windows, a large oval English reproduction table seats six comfortably. The space is defined by flowing draperies and an oriental rug. Facing back toward the kitchen, running along the right perimeter wall, is a large section of blue baha granite on top of polar white custom cabinets. This section contains the sink, dishwasher and commercial-grade 48” Wolf range
KITCHEN
and dual oven. A window above the sink is flanked by glass door cabinets with a large range hood to the left. All of the cabinetry was custom built by the Appleseed Workshop in Birmingham. Turning the corner to the left is a Sub-Zero refrigerator hidden by a wooden panel. In fact, all of the commercial appliances used in the kitchen can accommodate a wooden panel. Next to the refrigerator, top to bottom, is a two-shelf cabinet with swinging doors, a Wolf microwave, a space with a 25’ deep blue baha countertop, a convection steam oven and a warming drawer. Next to that is a full-length pantry, again with a cabinet front.
BY TROY BLEWETT
The back entryway leads to the garage. Coming back into the space is a full-length pantry with sliding pocket door. Across the walk-way on the other side of the kitchen is a wet bar with an American walnut countertop with sink on top of a large two-shelf cabinet. There is also a floor-to-ceiling wine cooler that holds 144 bottles of wine and offers temperature control for both red and white wines. Next to it is a full-size Sub-Zero freezer with cabinet panel. A 54” peninsula separates the kitchen from the den and family room. Also featuring a solid walnut counter, it creates a large opening between the spaces that lets guests in the living space talk to people in the kitchen.

“Once you come across that opening, there’s a French antique piece against the wall that completes the perimeter,” says John. “Then, in the center of it all, sits a huge island that is 65” wide and 98” long. It might weigh 1,000 pounds,” he comments. The furniture-quality base is made from American walnut and topped with river white granite. Featuring a rounded lip, it seats four and also contains a prep sink for the cook. Ten foot ceilings that are coffered, hard wood floors and custom fabrics complete the look and feel of this amazing kitchen remodel. “This space is really a work of art,” John says. “We love the new kitchen. It’s really opened up our home and it’s exactly what we wanted. The project far exceeds our expectations.” HIRING YOUR CONTRACTOR
Cathie and John found their contractor, Precision Homecrafters, via a referral. “George [Williams, president] had done some work for a friend of ours,” John says. “We knew this was going to be a unique project and we wanted a contractor with a good track record and a solid reputation.” “Ultimately, Neil McDonald, the project manager for Precision Homecrafters, really drove the success of the project. It was probably his worst nightmare having a retired person at home all the time,” chuckles John, “but we made it work.” Importantly, John shares this advice with other homeowners considering a renovation: “While cost is important, don’t just hire the least expensive firm. Hire someone who has experience doing the type of work you want to have done,” he says. “A major renovation is a large investment, and you want the best job possible.”

we make dreams come true. You long for a kitchen where family and friends gather as you make meals to remember. Where laughter flows easily and quiet smiles speak volumes. Where tiny hands work alongside your own, trying to mimic your every move. Where you can create dishes that look exactly like the picture in the cookbook and taste the way love feels. You yearn for a bath that’s a refuge, an escape, a sensual indulgence. You want to surround yourself with beauty. You want to emerge refreshed and restored, ready to live life to its fullest.
