NARI Means Professionalism ne of the most common problems homeowners face when confronting a remodeling project is fear of the unknown. Many have heard from relatives and friends about their horrible experiences with the construction industry. We’ve all heard stories about contractors who started a job and didn’t finish; who skimped on building materials; or who took money and were never seen from again. There are too many people in the remodeling business who are best described as “fly by night” firms. They are dishonest and make no attempt to be upfront with consumers. Worse, they operate without a proper license or insurance. Fortunately, homeowners can turn to the New York City/Long Island Chapter of the National Association for the Remodeling Industry (NARI). NARI’s main purpose is to promote professionalism in the industry. Professionalism in the way its members deal with homeowners, suppliers and tradesmen. When you deal with a member of the NYC/LI Chapter of NARI, you are dealing with someone dedicated to quality

workmanship, consumer satisfaction and a Code of Ethics (see page 8) they apply in all of their business dealings. NARI members are also committed to staying abreast of the latest building techniques through the ongoing education provided by NARI’s different industry certification programs (see page 12). In addition, their work will encompass the newest trends in remodeling. Importantly, every member of NARI listed in this publication is an insured and licensed company you can trust to assist you with your next home renovation. ou can trust a professional remodeling contractor with NARI certification to have access to the latest industry information via conventions, educational programs, meetings, trade publications and expos that feature up-to-the-minute products, materials and techniques. Only serious professionals with a real desire to excel in the industry are eligible to participate in NARI’s rigorous certification program, which teaches and tests skill sets, safety issues, and ethical business practices. When you see any of the certifications described on this page, you’ll know that the affiliated remodeling contractor or company has taken the time to meet performance and business criteria that surpass industry standards.

Certified Remodeler (CR) Designed to recognize and identify fullservice remodelers. Candidates must have a minimum of five years experience and be employed by or own a firm that derives 90 percent of its sales volume from remodeling. Certified Remodeler Associate (CRA) Recognizes individuals who actively support the remodeling industry, such as architects, designers, educators, manufacturers, publishers, suppliers and consultants. Certified Remodeler Specialist (CRS) Reserved for remodelers who specialize in a particular area of the industry, such as roofing or flooring, etc.

Master Certified Remodeler (MCR) This designation recognizes Certified Remodelers that have demonstrated commitment to the remodeling industry through support of their local chapter, NARI National, and/or their local community. The MCR identifies Certified Remodelers that have withstood the test of time and continue to be successful within the industry. Candidates must complete and submit this application for consideration by the NARI Certification Board. In addition to completing and submitting an application to qualify for the MCR certification, candidates must be a Certified Remodeler for a minimum of 10 consecutive years and hold another NARI certification. Candidates must have been involved with their local NARI chapter or NARI National and/or involvement as a leader in the local community. Candidates must submit a letter of recommendation from their chapter executive or chapter president or three letters of recommendation from recent clients. Universal Design Certified Remodeler (UDCR) Individuals with the UDCR designation are recognized as experienced remodelers with skills and knowledge in all aspects of universal design and remodeling. Candidates must complete and submit this application for consideration by the NARI Certification Board. In addition to completing and submitting an application, to qualify for the UDCR certification exam, candidates must have been in the remodeling industry for a minimum of 5 years. Candidates must also have completed a minimum of 8 hours of universal design remodeling/building related education.

Certified Lead Carpenter (CLC) Designed for lead carpenters who are skilled and knowledgeable in the technical, hands-on aspects of their work, but also have demonstrated skill and knowledge in project management, supervision and customer service. Candidates must have a minimum five years experience with at least two of those years as a lead carpenter. Companies who believe in providing a quality product will make sure their lead carpenters are trained and certified so they can produce better jobs, be more professional, run projects more efficiently, and interact more proactively with their customers. Certified Kitchen & Bath Remodeler (CKBR) This designation allows homeowners to identify contractors who do extensive work in kitchen and bath remodeling, and have gone the extra mile to improve themselves and their firm’s capabilities in these areas. The CKBR certification addresses the unique aspects of kitchen & bath design and remodeling, including technical expertise and new product knowledge. Green Certified Professional (GCP) The GCP designation is designed to recognize and identify remodelers who apply green or sustainable principles to their remodeling projects. They understand key green building concepts including energy efficiency, site management and use, indoor air quality, water conservation and the use of building materials and finishes. The GCP certification addresses how green remodeling can make homes more durable, efficient, sustainable, healthier to live in and less expensive to operate.

n May 17, 2010, 15-year-old Andrew Rosa was riding his bike home when tragedy struck. Andrew was hit by a motorist near his home, resulting in severe Traumatic Brain Injury and multiple bone fractures. Since the accident, he has undergone multiple brain surgeries and is still struggling to recover. As a result, Andrew requires around-the-clock nursing care at St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital, in Bayside, NY. Like any parents, the Rosas wanted to bring their son home. In order to make this happen, certain major modifications needed to be made to their home to accommodate Andrew and his medical equipment. They also needed a custom handicap van to be able to transport him to doctor appointments and therapy. When the members of NARI's Long Island chapter caught wind of the predicament the Rosas were in, they knew that if they came together as a group, they'd be able to make the Rosa’s dream of bringing Andrew home come true. After careful planning and rounding up some crews, the members of NARI started Operation Bring Andrew Home! With help from the Rosa family, the members of NARI carefully and strategically came up with a plan to make the Rosa's home not only able to accommodate Andrew and his medical equipment, but also a live in nurse. In July and August of 2011, the members of NARI's NYC/LI chapter put on their tool belts, grabbed their hammers and nails, and got to work on this gratifying project. The turnout of volunteers was unreal; so unreal that the project was a few days ahead of schedule. With expectations to do the roof in days to come, the volunteers were ready for the roof crew sooner than anticipated. NARI President, Bob Diddier did what he could to make a second miracle happen by getting a roof crew to the jobsite almost immediately. Marcor Roofing & Construction came through in a pinch and within an hour had crews roofing Andrew's new home with the materials donated by Florence Building Supply. 5 TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL REMODEL

emodeling your house is a great way to get the home of your dreams and to increase the value of your single largest asset. Before the work begins, however, it is important to lay the groundwork for success. Here are five tips for a successful project.

SELECT THE RIGHT CONTRACTOR The single most important step in any successful remodeling project is hiring the right contractor. It doesn’t have to be difficult, but you do need to do your homework. Basic requirements include finding someone with a track record of success in your community and making sure the contractor you hire is properly licensed and insured. Membership in a trade organization like the National Association for the Remodeling Industry (NARI) means the contractor is informed about the latest products, construction techniques and industry issues. The best way to find a qualified remodeler is to be referred by someone who has just had a successful project completed by that firm. Talk to your relatives, friends, neighbors and coworkers who have had recent remodeling done. “You want to be referred to a contractor who does the same type of work you are looking to have done,” says Kevin Wrynn, CR, of Kevin Wrynn Carpentry (a past president of the NYC/LI Chapter of NARI). “If you are doing a kitchen project, you want a referral from someone who had their kitchen done.” “Additionally, do not just ask the contractor for references, make sure you call them,” he says. “Find out how those projects went. One question that might give you an insight into possible issues is: ‘If you had one thing you could change about your remodeling experience, what would it be?’” Finally, interview your candidates. The contractor you hire needs to be someone you can communicate with and someone you trust. Remember, you and your remodeler are tackling your project together. It is critical that you hire a contractor as committed to the success of your project as you are. 24

CREATE A REALISTIC TIMELINE Timing is critical when planning a home improvement project. Be sure to select a start date and an approximate finish date that best fits into you and your contractor’s schedules. Be realistic. If you are remodeling your kitchen and jobs similar in scope typically take six weeks to complete, don’t expect yours to be done in three. And make sure to factor material delivery times into your schedule. Before work begins, ask your contractor what inconveniences may occur and plan for them. Take into account any special events so that you and/or your remodeler can plan accordingly. Proper timing of your job can go a long way towards reducing stress levels and making your project run smoothly. CONSIDER PERSONAL SATISFACTION VERSUS RETURN ON INVESTMENT The primary reason for remodeling an existing house is to get the home you want. A remodel should, however, properly position your home in your

SET A BUDGET Establish a firm budget for your remodeling project. You don’t want to end up short on cash and not be able to finish your project, nor do you want to end up deeply in debt. Work with your contractor to get the most for your hard-earned dollar. He or she should have a general idea of how much you are willing to invest in the project and can help you stay within that budget. Remember, changes are costly. The worst remodeling mistake many homeowners make is to wait until the construction process has begun and then start changing their minds. They want a different design, a different product or to add something altogether new to the renovation. To make the most of your budget, the time to explore and make changes is during the planning stage. It’s a good idea to keep 10 to 20 percent of your budget in reserve for any unexpected expenses. Unforeseen costs will inevitably arise and you don’t want to be unprepared.

You don’t want to overbuild because you might not be able to realize the increased value if you need to sell the home, but you don’t want to under build either. “Consider how long you are going to be living in the home,” advises Wrynn. “If you plan on selling in a year or two, you probably do not want to invest a lot of money. On the other hand, if you do not plan on moving, it makes sense to get the house you want so you can enjoy it,” he says. “A well done renovation that is taken care of will usually retain a good portion of its value if you decide to sell your home later.” Remodeling lets you invest in your existing asset and increase its value. Generally speaking, the remodeling projects with the best return on investment include kitchen and bathroom remodels, additions and cosmetic changes (a new roof, paint or carpeting). PUT IT IN WRITING A well written contract spells out what the homeowner is getting from the contractor. It should include a comprehensive description of the project, a payment

schedule, a timetable, and the types of products/materials that will be used. The responsibilities of the contractor and any subcontractors should be described in detail. “Make sure everything you discuss with your contractor makes it into the contract,” emphasizes Wrynn. “In doing so, you leave no room for error later.” A contract should also list provisions for warranties, changes in procedures and, in case a conflict arises, alternative dispute resolution clauses. Review the contract thoroughly and only sign it once all your questions have been answered. And always be sure to keep a copy of the final document for your records. Once the ink is dry, you are ready to turn the remodeling ideas you’ve been dreaming about into reality. ver the years I have heard so many stories of disaster and near disaster resulting from people listening to and taking advice from the wrong people. We all seek advice from time to time, but we are often as disappointed as we are satisfied with the advice we get. Sometimes it is a matter of the blind leading the blind as the old saying goes, and sometimes we find we actually gain some real nuggets of wisdom. So what is the difference, and when do you know that you are getting help instead of more confusion regarding your situation? There are as many ways that you can be helped by others as there are ways that you can be hurt. Of course we could reverse that statement and focus on the ways you

can be hurt. But instead let’s look at the important elements needed in seeking help. One of the frustrating things I often see is the person who asks everyone for their opinion. This can be dangerous for a number of reasons. The biggest problem with asking too many people is that most of them will not be qualified to give you sound advice. Part of this “disqualification” is that they most likely don’t have all the facts, or they don’t have the necessary experience in the area, or they don’t have the time and attention to put into helping you with your questions. Part of not having the experience is that these individuals may be very fixed into their way of doing or thinking about something. And, quite frankly, they either can’t or won’t look at the big picture.

Unless you are dealing with a professional in the area, it is rare to find someone who will have the necessary time or energy to put into helping you solve your problems. As a result you will more likely get an offhand answer or opinion. That is not to say that the advisor is trying to hurt you, most likely they aren’t, but keep in mind that you could have come up with the same answer yourself. Although your family, friends and neighbors usually mean well, they are often just not equipped to assist in certain decisions. Unfortunately although everyone has their own ideas or opinions about certain subjects, they usually don’t have all the facts, knowledge or experience needed for sound decision making.

any of our projects are referred to us by people who did NOT choose our company,” says Joanne Bechhoff, vice president of G.B. Construction & Development. “One couple doing a complete remodel chose our competitor because: 1) his price was considerably lower, and 2) He told them that the work we said needed to be done was not necessary and, 3) They could remain in the house during construction. His inexperience cost them more than what we had priced the project for. Not only did they have to move out, it cost them double! Since that fiasco, we have remodeled their children’s home and continue to receive referrals from both families.”

Although this is true in a lot of areas of life, it is especially true when it involves any decisions or plans requiring professional expertise. We have all heard about the arm chair attorney, accountant or doctor, but too many of us ignore the importance of seeking professional advice for the many improvements possible for our homes. The various professionals who can and will assist us in improving our homes include architects, designers, builders, remodelers and landscape professionals. To ensure that the systems in our homes are kept safe and in good condition there are many service professionals including plumbing and heating specialists, electricians, and those who service our appliances and any other systems we have in our homes. Whether we need the services of an architect, a designer, a builder, a remodeler or a service contractor, we are safer to use the expertise of a professional rather than that of a well-meaning, but uninformed friend. When it comes to trying something new, most of your friends or other casual advisors won’t really know how it will work. Again they will probably advise

you to not go ahead. This unfortunately limits creativity and progress. And of course, you will never know if the new idea would have worked. When it comes to getting professional advice, it is critical that you let your adviser know all the facts of the situation; otherwise even the professional might lead you astray. Of course, anyone who is a real professional should strive to get all the relevant data before giving their opinion. Unfortunately I have seen too many cases of that not happening. What I often see is the casual advisor looking only at one aspect of the total picture. Unfortunately that aspect is often the price. All too often people end up choosing the “low bidder” and are usually sorry afterwards.

There are just too many instances of unprofessional contractors giving lowball pricing and then cutting corners to make up the difference. Recently a client told me about a prospect deciding not to use his services because the prospect’s financial advisor said to go with the “low bidder”. As we all know, that is a recipe for disaster and a prime example of not looking at all the facts. Although it is important that we ultimately make our own decisions, we all recognize that there will be times that we may want to seek outside help. In doing so, there will often be conflicting opinions, so it will be important that you make sure all the data is available to anyone you consult and that you ulti-

mately make your own decisions. When it comes to prospective clients seeking advice, the best you can do for them is to ensure that their advisers are also fully informed. CHOOSING A PARTNER FOR YOUR NEXT REMODELING PROJECT

hen you choose a contractor for your remodeling project, you are selecting a partner with whom you will work for at least the next several months. So it pays to do a thorough search to find the right person for the job. In fact, the success of your remodel depends on you and your contractor being able to communicate, work together, and trust each other. To help you select the right contracting firm for your next project, four veteran contractors—totaling over 100 years of combined remodeling experience—sat down to offer you these tips. They are: Kent Buell, MCR, CKBR and President of Kentstruction; Doug Dervin, CR, CLC and President of Double D Contractors; Art Donnelly, MCR, CR,

CKBR and President of Legacy Builders & Remodelers Corp.; and Charlie Testa, CKD, CBD and President of Island Kitchens and Baths. “Finding the right contractor doesn’t have to be difficult,” says Doug Dervin. “But homeowners do need to do their homework. Take your time, conduct a thorough search and ask the right questions,” he says. BASIC “MUST HAVE” REQUIREMENTS Look for a contractor who has an established business. A business that has been around for a period of time will have a track record of success that you can review. “Check to be sure the contractor you hire is properly licensed,” advises Kent

Buell. “In fact, be sure you physically see the license, as well as the firm’s workman’s compensation and liability insurance. “It’s also a good idea to check with the Department of Consumer Affairs to make sure there are not an overabundance of complaints against the contractor you are considering,” adds Buell. PROFESSIONAL TRADE ORGANIZATIONS Professional trade organizations like the National Association for the Remodeling Industry (NARI) are great sources for finding high-quality contractors. Buell, Dervin, Donnelly, and Testa are all members of the NYC/LI Chapter of NARI. “NARI is the best place to look for qualified remodeling contractors,” says Donnelly. “NARI members are committed not only to doing quality work, but also to observing ethical business practices and advancing their profession.” “NARI keeps us abreast of the latest information concerning new building techniques, products, and materials,” says Testa. “NARI keeps us up-to-date in a changing industry and the end result is a better product for our customers.” “A person who belongs to a trade association and is willing to pay the yearly dues and attend the meetings is usually someone interested in his or her business and wants to improve themselves,” Buell says.

QUALIFIED REFERRALS One of the best ways for a homeowner to find a qualified remodeler is via a referral. According to NARI, nearly 75% of all remodeling jobs handled by contractors start out as referrals. “There are two aspects to every good referral,” says Dervin. “First, it should come from a previously satisfied customer or the contractor. Second, you want to be referred to a contractor who does the type of work you want done.” “If you want to add a deck and your neighbors just had their kitchen remodeled, 30

their contractor might not be the one you are looking for,” says Donnelly. “You want to hire someone who has experience building decks and brings those special skills to your project.” Some questions you should be asking your contractor are: • How long have you been in business? • Who will be assigned as a project supervisor for my remodel? • What is the time frame for starting my project? • What is our approach to a project of this scope? • Do you have employees or do you use subcontractors? • Is your company a full-service or specialty contractor? • Do you have design services available? • How many projects like mine have you completed in the past year? • May I have a list of references for projects you’ve completed which are similar to mine? • Will we need a permit for this project? A qualified professional will have no problem answering these questions to your satisfaction. If you get vague or incomplete answers, or the contractor is difficult to communicate with, do not hire that remodeler. SURFING THE NET The Internet has opened up a whole new way for customers to shop for goods and services, and the remodeling industry is no exception. Many homeowners use the Web to locate remodeling contractors and review entire portfolios of their work from the comfort of their living room. And more and more contractors view a well-designed Website as a critical marketing tool. “We get a lot of calls from people who have visited our Website,” says Testa. “We have six different kitchen projects posted and potential customers can see the wide variety of designs we have done.” “A good Website gives the homeowner a good idea of the contractor’s capabilities,” says Testa. “We’ve had an extensive

site for five years and once a potential customer goes through it, he or she knows what our company is about and what kind of work we do,” he says. “It actually helps us qualify potential customers.” CHECK REFERENCES Once you’ve narrowed your search and believe you’ve located the right contractor, ask for a list of references. More importantly, follow up with them. “Don’t be afraid to ask a contractor you are considering hiring for a list of satisfied customers,” Testa says. “We provide a long list of past customers and encourage potential customers to call them, and in many cases, visit the job.” According to Donnelly, you should ask for more than two or three references. “Anyone can give you two or three,” he says. “And they should be jobs recently completed, preferably in the last year.” Be sure to take a look at completed jobs. Most contractors are more than happy to show you their work. If not in person, visit the contractor’s Website or ask to see the firm’s portfolio. Most contractors have “before and after” photos they will be glad to show you. Here’s a list of questions to ask a con-

tractor’s previous customers: • Could you communicate well with the remodeler? • Were you pleased with the quality of work? • Were you satisfied with the way your contractor conducted business? • Did the work crew show up on time? • Was the job completed on schedule? • Did the contractor stay in touch throughout the project? • Was the jobsite kept neat? • How was the contractor on follow-up? • Did you have any problems with call-backs? • Would you use the contractor again without hesitation? ESTABLISHING RAPPORT Buell, Dervin, Donnelly, and Testa all agree that hiring a contractor with whom you are comfortable and feel you can trust is the most important factor in the success of a remodeling job. A remodeling project can take anywhere from three to six months, or more, and you’ll have to be around that contractor every day. “The better you can communicate, the better the job goes,” says Dervin. “You have to be able to share ideas, ask questions and even disagree once in a while if you want the best project possible.” www.remodelinform.com

CHOOSING A PARTNER FOR YOUR NEXT REMODELING PROJECT “There has to be good chemistry between you and your contractor,” Testa says. “You need to feel like you can communicate and have your questions and concerns addressed,” he says. “It goes back to trust.” “When you are interviewing the contractor, ask yourself if he or she is someone you would be comfortable working with,” Buell says. “Your personalities need to match and you need to feel you can trust each other.” “In my opinion, if you have any doubt about being able to trust your remodeler, there is no reason to have them on the job,” Donnelly comments. “Without trust, the job cannot be successful.”

SELECTING A PREFERRED SUPPLIER VERSUS COMPETITIVE BIDDING It is perfectly fine to select a contractor of choice without taking bids. If you’ve done your due diligence, called the referrals, looked at finished work, and you have concluded a particular contractor is right for your job, don’t be afraid to hire that firm.

“When you get three to five bids, you are opening the door for shortcuts,” Testa says. “Bidders may not be bidding on the same thing. They may not be specifying the same quality materials. “When we are hired for a remodeling job, we take the customer through the design process, including material specification, so the homeowner is ultimately setting the project scope and budget,” he says. If you have not done your homework, whether you bid the job or not, there is a good chance you will regret your choice,” Donnelly says. “Price is one of the many categories a homeowner should consider,” he comments. “Experience, capability, and quality are others that make up a successful project.” A FINAL THOUGHT Remember, you and your contractor are really tackling your remodeling job as partners. on and Carey Paniccia purchased their home a year-and-a-half-ago with plans to remodel the lower level themselves. A “high” ranch, the home had a finished upstairs, but the lower level had two unfinished rooms and a small bath that needed work. “We searched for the right home for the longest time,” Ron says. “When we found this house we knew it was a bit of a handyman’s special, but we felt we could do the work ourselves.” Ron started ripping out paneling, wallpaper and carpeting. Before he could complete much of the project, Ron and Carey were expecting their baby daughter and Ron’s father suffered a serious illness. Between his responsibilities as a FDNY lieutenant and his need to spend time with his new daughter and ill father, Ron found himself unable to finish the renovation project.

HELP ON THE WAY With their renovation project stalled, Carey decided to write a note to the NBCNY program “George to the Rescue” asking for help finishing their project. Soon, show host George Oliphant and his “Rescue Crew” were on their way. A team including NARI NYC/LI member Babylon Bay Construction and local designer Jill Vegas were soon working on a plan to finish the Paniccias’ lower level. “We quickly came up with a plan to open up the main space to create a wideopen living area and to upgrade the bathroom,” says A.J. Shupack, owner of Babylon Bay. “But first we had to completely gut the space including removing several walls.” One of the project’s challenges was replacing a load bearing wall with load bearing columns that would be part of the design. Ultimately, the living area was split to include a family space and space for a photo studio. “I left my job to have our daughter and, having modeled a little, had gotten into photography,” Carey says. “So I asked if we could convert some of the

space into a studio.” To meet her needs, the team painted one wall black and installed her photography lights on booms so that portion of the space could be quickly converted when Carey was shooting photos. Carey describes the family space as “contemporary eclectic.” It features a beige sectional couch, a hanging chair, big pillows and a canvas wall featuring family photos. “The new bathroom is just beautiful,” she says. With teal blue glass tile highlighting the design, the effect is stunning. Fixtures are white and the glass shower features a rain-type shower head. A pocket door completes the room’s economical design. A QUICK TIMELINE Impressively, the renovation was completed in the television show’s two-week timeline. “Everyone on the project really worked hard to meet the schedule,” Shupack says. “You are talking about demolition, framing, drywall, plumbing, electric, painting decorating and more in a compressed timeframe.” Shupack credits donations from Kleet Lumber,

Call Me Electric, L & J Plumbing, Tile Creations, Lowes, Kohler and others for help with the construction process. Help and funding also came from NBC and a variety of other vendors. Not to mention some of Ron’s friends from the FDNY and a childhood friend who works for NYPD. Without their help, the remodel would not have succeeded. A WORD OF THANKS “Getting this project done for our family means the world to us,” Carey stresses. “I don’t think we could have done it ourselves. The idea that there were so many people willing to help gives you a warm feeling inside. It is so incredible what people will do for others without expecting anything in return. We are very appreciative,” she says. With those ideas in mind, a friend referred her to Doug Dervin, CR, CLR and president, of Double D Contractors in Hicksville, NY. Together, they came up with a design that matched her vision and set about building her beach-themed retreat. “Lisa had a clear idea of what she wanted, which she shared with us, and then we took it from there,” says Dervin. “Her old deck was coming apart, so we needed to really beef up its structure and rebuild it from there,” he comments.

hen Lisa Scansarole decided to redo the deck on the back of her home, she hoped to create an atmosphere reminiscent of a beach-side oasis complete with a tikibar. “I wanted a place where I could entertain guests that would remind them of being at the beach,” she says. “So I wanted an area where we could sit in the sun on a nice day, sit around a fire on a beautiful evening, or retire to a covered bar area for shade or to get out of the weather.”

Decking Alternatives ired of painting, staining or sealing your old wooden deck? Sick of replacing warped, split or insect damaged boards? If so, there are a wide variety of alternative decking materials on the market. They are all practically maintenance-free and are easy to install.

VINYL DECKING Made of 100% recycled PVC compounds, vinyl decking like AZEK is a very popular no-maintenance alternative decking material. Virtually maintenance free, it eliminates the need for annual repairs and waterproofing. Available in a wide variety of colors, soap and water is all that is required to keep vinyl decking looking good. It can also be considered an environmentallyfriendly material. COMPOSITE DECKING Composite means two or more distinct, structurally complementary substances are combined to create a product with superior structural or functional properties. In the case of composite decking, the primary components are most often a plastic and wood fiber. Products like TimberTeck and Trex often take on the natural beauty of wood, but leaves behind all the rotting and splintering. Easy to maintain, composite decking options include not only the ability to physically bend and shape, but also a variety of colors and textures from which to choose. STONE DECKING Stone, brick or composite tiles are very strong and are also a low-maintenance alternative to wood decking. While stone and brick options are labor intensive, stone composites like Deckstone or natural stone with a composite backing like StoneDeck are strong, fireproof and easy to install.

Double D used AZEK decking for the surface of the new deck, creating a relatively large 20’ x 30’ structure that sits approximately 20 inches off the ground. AZEK is a cellular PVC decking material that is stain, scratch and split resistant. One of the deck’s stunning design features is a series of circular steps going down into the yard which required the Double D team to work at bending the AZEK material. The centerpiece of the uncovered portion of the deck is a circular stone fire pit. Like the campfire ring of lore, it is a great place for Lisa’s guests to gather around and chat with one another. A nice curved seating area sits opposite the fire pit. And Lisa has added several comfortable patio chairs. The covered bar area is surrounded by exterior stone walls and vinyl siding. The bar top and countertops are made of matching granite. Pendant lighting and a ceiling fan provide ambiance in the evening. The bar, which seats four, also features a built in barbeque, a wine cooler and a refrigerator to keep drinks cool. With plenty of storage space built-in, it provides a great place for entertaining.
