Our membership is comprised of full-service contractors, design-build firms, manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, sub-contractors, lenders and other related professionals. And all of them are committed to enhancing the professionalism of the remodeling industry and, more importantly, to the success of your next project. ou can trust a professional remodeling contractor with NARI certification to have access to the latest industry information via conventions, educational programs, meetings, trade publications and expos that feature up-to-the-minute products, materials and techniques. Only serious professionals with a real desire to excel in the industry are eligible to participate in NARI’s rigorous certification program, which teaches and tests skill sets, safety issues, and ethical business practices. When you see any of the certifications described on this page, you’ll know that the affiliated remodeling contractor or company has taken the time to meet performance and business criteria that surpass industry standards. CR (Certified Remodeler) Individuals with the CR designation are recognized as experienced remodelers with skills and knowledge in all aspects of the remodeling industry. They must have at least five years remodeling experience, participate in 16 hours of continuing education and be associated with a business in compliance with the NARI Code of Ethics.

CRS (Certified Remodeler Specialist) This designation includes those remodelers who specialize in six specialty areas of the industry: concrete and masonry, electrical systems, insulation, mechanical systems, plumbing, and roofing and siding. They must have been in the remodeling business for at least five years and associated with a business in compliance with the NARI Code of Ethics.

GCP (Green Certified Professional) Individuals with the GCP designation are recognized as experienced remodelers with skills and knowledge in all aspects of green remodeling, have been in the remodeling business for at least two years and be associated with a business in compliance with the NARI Code of Ethics.

CKBR (Certified Kitchen and Bath Remodeler also includes ACSD and PKBP) Individuals with the CKBR designation are recognized as experienced remodelers with skills and knowledge in all aspects of kitchen and bathroom remodeling, have at least five years experience and are associated with a business in compliance with the NARI Code of Ethics.

MCR (Master Certified Remodeler) This designation recognizes Certified Remodelers that have demonstrated commitment to the remodeling industry through support and involvement in their local chapter, NARI National, and/or their local community. Candidates must be a Certified Remodeler for a minimum of ten consecutive years, hold another NARI certification (CKBR, GCP, CLC, and UDCP) and must submit a letter of recommendation from their chapter executive or chapter president or three letters of recommendation from recent clients.

CLC (Certified Lead Carpenter) CLC designation is exclusively for lead carpenters who are skilled and knowledgeable in the technical, hands-on aspects of their work, and who have demonstrated skill and knowledge in project management, supervision, and customer service. Candidates must have worked in the remodeling industry full-time and continuously for at least five years, must comply with the NARI Code of Ethics and must have at least two years experience as a full time lead carpenter. CRPM (Certified Remodeling Project Manager) Certified Remodeling Project Managers (CRPMs) are the field personnel who oversee every aspect of the project: customer satisfaction, personnel management, project schedule, administration, etc. while working on the project or projects. Candidates must have two (2) years continuous experience in the remodeling industry, AND one (1) year as a remodeling project manager.

UDCP (Universal Design Certified Professional) Individuals with the UDCP designation are recognized as experienced professionals with skills and knowledge in all aspects of universal design and remodeling. UDCP’s must have been working in the remodeling industry full-time and continuously for at least two years, must comply to the NARI Code of Ethics and must complete a minimum of eight hours of universal design remodeling/building related education

CRA (Certified Remodeler Associate) CRA designation will be available to and used by individuals associated with the remodeling industry, but not directly involved in any form of hands-on remodeling. This includes individuals employed as consultants, educators, manufacturers, publishers, suppliers, and writers for the remodeling industry.

THINQ Technology consists of five features: Smart Grid, Smart Diagnosis, Smart Access, Smart Adapt and Food Management: Smart Grid: a meter on the home’s appliances to make sure they are using the smallest amount of energy with the least expensive rates; Smart Diagnosis: customers can resolve issues with their appliances quickly and efficiently. The appliance will alert the consumer on their smartphone or tablet for small issues like a door left open or an off-balance washing machine. For large issues, customers can call a service line and the technician will instruct them to press a sequence of buttons to diagnose the problem, leading to faster resolution; Smart Access: allows customers to monitor their appliances remotely. Customers can keep track of their washing cycle or set the refrigerator temperature using a smartphone or tablet; Smart Adapt: allows customers to download updates for their appliances using a WiFi connection. Customers can access recipes and advanced washing cycles without having to purchase a new product; and Food Management: allows customers to check stock and expiration dates of their food by dragging and dropping icons on an LCD screen. According to VanderWaal, “Regarding additional connectivity options, the next generation line will include Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. This technology simplifies the connection between a consumer’s

smartphone and the appliance, so you can easily register and share information between the devices. For example, if a consumer selects a recipe via the smartphone app, but wants it to appear on the refrigerator, it only requires a tap.” Whirlpool

Smart Nudges and Alerts can tell the customer how the product is functioning. Sub-Zero and Wolf smart appliances feature the Smart Appliance App and Smart Appliance Module to integrate with the Control4® wireless home control system. For instance, the system “can notify parents when the fridge is open by sending messages if it’s open longer than 90 seconds, say. There are messages to know when to change fridge filter—email, texts, etc.,” said Paul Williams, vice president of security & communications products/support services with Control4. Lights also can flash, music can play or a text message can be sent when internal sensors detect food is finished cooking. “Now instead of having to babysit, I can just take the meat out of the oven,” said Williams. The Smart Appliance App allows customers to receive notifications for instances like when the oven is done preheating or what the current oven temperature is. The app can also be set to lower the refrigerator’s energy consumption during daytime, set to an energy-saving vacation mode or set to increase ice before entertaining, to name a few features. General service requests can be sent via the Control4 System and customers can be notified when there is a problem with an appliance. Sub-Zero built-in refrigerator models and Wolf E wall ovens now come with aftermarket installation for the new Smart Appliance module, which will boost functionality of certain appliances when integrated with the Control4 system. GE

GE’s smart technologies focus on monitoring and controlling appliances for greater energy savings with the Brillion™ Whole-Home Energy Sensor. “We’ve leveled the playing field by providing a product that communicates a home’s continuous real-time energy consumption to consumers without a smart meter,” said William Paul, product manager, home energy, GE Appliances. “Our new Whole-Home Sensor connects to the consumer’s electrical panel and allows them to understand their energy consumption without waiting for their electricity provider to install a smart meter.” The devise pulls data from the home’s large 240-volt applications like a panel box or pool pump to the Nucleus™ energy manager, which then sends the data to the customer’s smartphone or computer. GE also has the Brillion Smart Plugs, which can be plugged into 120-volt outlets to read energy usage through the Nucleus energy manager. Also, Brillion thermostats allow customers to adjust their heating and cooling schedules remotely through their iPhone. Local Appeal of Smart Appliances

Since the technology is so new, smart appliances still attract a smaller segment of overall buyers in the market. Setting Your No matter where you are in the home remodeling process, it’s important that you set your expectations for your remodeled home, as well as for the professionals you are or will be working with. Although it’s best to lay out your needs, wants and goals before you get started, it’s never too late to clarify them.

Even though you may prefer to sell your existing home rather than upgrade, that’s not always an option. Before you make a final decision on whether to sell and move, or remodel, it’s advisable to determine the availability of homes for sale. Recently home prices have been rising and in some cases, there is a shortage of homes for sale. Although there may be homes for sale in your area, there may not be enough homes with the features that you are looking for. Even if you do decide to buy another house, you may still choose to remodel. This is where setting your expectations comes in. Do Your Homework

In setting your expectations there are a number of factors to look at. Most of these factors entail doing some homework. Depending on your needs and wants, this homework can be relatively simple and straight forward, or much more complex. Just keep in mind that the more prepared you are, the better the outcome will be. As Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” 20

Your homework can and most likely will entail research on a number of aspects associated with your home itself. This research will include style and functionality, as well as many other elements associated with your remodeled home. As you find ideas that you like, you may identify some that you’ll want to avoid. Part of your homework should also include the selection of the remodeling professionals you choose to work with. Just as it’s important to know what you want for your remodeled home, it’s equally important to know what you want in your remodeler. To ensure a positive remodeling experience, it’s essential to verify the credentials and traits of potential designers and contractors. By choosing remodelers who are members of a professional association such as the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), you will increase your chances of having a successful project.

Equally important to your pre-planning is determining your budget for your project. In addition to affordability issues, it’s important to formulate your wish list so that it falls within your comfort level. To not do so will set you up for frustration and disappointment. Although it’s not necessary, or advisable, for you to determine the detailed costs involved in your project, your remodeler will certainly need to know your budgetary constraints in order to create an appropriate proposal. Just as knowing the style and functionality you want is necessary, determining and sharing your budget with the professionals you choose to engage is important in preparing for your project.

Even though you may not get everything you want, you can certainly end up with a wonderful project and home that you love. The key is to prioritize your needs and wants. For example, functionality may be more important to you than style. Perhaps the priorities may lie in the size of your remodel or possibly the details of the project. By creating and using a wish list of everything you and your family want for your remodeled home you will have taken the first step in determining your priorities. Just as it’s important to share your goals with your remodeler, communicating your priorities is an essential element in preparing for your remodeling project.

Even if it’s not possible to get everything you want, there are often alternative choices and options to ensure that you will be happy with your remodeled home. As you do your research, keep in mind that there are many options that will satisfy your needs and wants. Although your first choice may not be within your reach, you can often find alternatives, which may end up being the best choice for you and your family. By having a clear idea of your goals for your newly remodeled home and sharing those goals and your vision, you’ll be closer to achieving your objectives. The remodeling professionals you choose to work with can and will assist you in selecting various options to ensure that you will achieve your goals.

What is Universal Design and why is it important to any remodel or construction project? According to the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), “Universal design is a worldwide movement based on the idea that all residential environments and products should easily be used and accessed by all members of the family, regardless of their age, size or physical abilities—throughout their lifespan.” Universally designed living spaces are a more realistic approach to meeting the housing needs of today’s multigenerational families. People do not want to have to move because their family is expanding or their own physical abilities are changing. This concept is being incorporated into new homes as well as remodeled homes. Design concepts like simply coordinating a grab bar or a built-in stool in a shower stall means you now have a shower that can accommodate every family member.

Many Options to Choose From

Accessories such as grab bars no longer have that institutional look. They can be purchased in almost any color or finish to coordinate with the rooms’ decor. Kitchen designs are also including many great universal design features. “Pull-out drawers and shelves in cabinets allow for barrier-free accessibility,” said Harris Boshak, UDCP of Florence Building Materials. “You will see pull-out shelves in just about every kitchen today while drawers instead of doors are becoming more popular,” says Harris. Varying counter heights create workspaces for all individuals, whether sitting or standing. Task lighting and color variation create contrast and define workspaces. Universal design concepts are not limited to the bathroom and kitchen though. They can be found throughout the home. Simple, common sense changes, such as wider doorways and hallways, create a barrier-free flow to accommodate all family members regardless of physical ability. Casement windows crank open easily without the leverage required to open double-hung windows. A no-step

covered exterior entryway makes the entrance to any home easier. Lever handles on faucets and doors make them easy to manipulate for both small children and the physically challenged. As a design feature, lever handles are aesthetically pleasing and increase functionality. Functionality is Key

Products designed to be easy to use for everyone can offer specific benefits to seniors, particularly those who have problems with their joints or balance. Mary Jo Peterson, a design consultant at Kohler, and a strong advocate of universal design, points to KOHLER Comfort Height toilets as an example. She says that seniors often opt for toilets with this chair-height, which is comfortable for most average-height adults, while helping seniors avoid excessive bending. "Over and over again, older people have this 'aha!' experience with Comfort Height toilets," says Peterson. "They say, 'Oh, much better. Much easier!'" Another great design feature for the bathroom is a separate handheld personal body spray. It can be installed with either a bracket or a slide bar. The slide bar allows for an easy and convenient height adjustment. “Another great design feature”, says Sean Bechhoff, UDCP of G.B. Construction & Development, Inc., “is a zero entry stall shower. It eliminates any tripping hazard and has become a standard for any bathroom today.” Add a built-in seat and it’s easy for all. NARI NYC/LI Member Goes A local NYC/LI Chapter Member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), and its employees in Hauppauge, NY, have been busy this past year completing many community service projects which benefited others throughout the New York and Long Island community. Rebuilding a High School Auditorium

Irwin Contracting Inc. employees recently donated their time and materials to rebuild the East Rockaway High School auditorium. The company partnered with the non-profit group Rebuilding Together in a project called “Make a Musical” by NBC’s Smash and Lowes, where schools across the country had an opportunity to apply for assistance in rebuilding their school auditoriums. The East Rockaway High School had extensive storm damage and was overcome by a tidal surge during Superstorm

Sandy, which caused an estimated $10 million worth of damage. The auditorium took on over four feet of water, which destroyed the stage, theater seating, curtains, props and flats. Irwin Contracting and its staff went in to rebuild the stage for the students. The students were planning to perform a musical at the beginning of February, even though their theater wasn’t functioning. They performed excerpts from the show on a neighboring school district’s stage as a fundraiser to raise additional funds to repair their auditorium. “This isn’t just an auditorium; this is the heart of our school community,” said East Rockaway Superintendent Dr. Roseanne Melucci. “This is the stage our school community uses for public meetings, celebrations of student success and town halls. This is the stage where our students’ grandparents, mothers and fathers stood on to graduate from this school. And this year’s class of 2013 must continue in the tradition. We must restore this space to be better than ever to show this community that there is hope and there is progress and that we are going to be ok.”

Well Beyond Community Service Additional Help After Superstorm Sandy

In addition, after Superstorm Sandy, Irwin Contracting immediately provided service to all of their prior clients that suffered storm damage. “Amazingly, with 99 percent of Long Island without power, Irwin’s office building in Hauppauge had electricity just two days after the storm. Our staff came in and started making phone calls to customers to see if there was any work that needed to be done.” Even more, as a NARI NYC/LI member, Irwin assisted in the NARI/Make-A-Wish project to help re-build the Heckman Family’s home in Amityville (See the Spring/Summer 2013 issue of Remodeling Today.) “We did community service for immediate remediation from the storm for groups that were seeking help,” says Krista Shevit, with Irwin Contracting. Veteran’s Home Gets Exterior Renovation

The company also helped with an exterior renovation for a Suffolk County veteran’s home that needed extensive work. “Irwin Contracting is a Veteran-owned business and we

are extremely proud and honored to help Veterans in our community with our contracting services,” Krista said. Irwin remodeled the exterior of a home that now houses four veterans. The home needed a new roof, siding, and windows—all installed by Irwin Contracting. A ribboncutting ceremony with all volunteers and contributors including Suffolk County United Veterans, Rebuilding Together, Irwin Contracting, Home Depot Foundation, and Sears Foundation, was held in May when the project was completed. When this family purchased this original 1,500 square-foot home, it was pretty much uninhabitable. Chip and Elizabeth Healy and their two children lived just down the block from the home in Garden City, NY, when it went up for sale. “We loved our neighborhood and we knew that we wanted to stay there, so when this home went up for sale, we thought we could gut the entire home and remodel it to our liking,” Elizabeth says. They purchased the house in May 2012. The original home had three bedrooms and one and one-half bathrooms. The owner was an older gentleman and the home was in his family for a very long time. “The house was pretty much abandoned, so it had to be gutted down to the studs so we knew that it would be a lot of work,” Elizabeth said.

Finding the Right Contractor

When they began thinking of the remodeling project, they knew from the beginning that they would most likely ask Pryde Contracting of Long Island, Inc. to do the work. “Pryde Contracting had done work and projects on other houses in the neighborhood,” Elizabeth said. “Many of the projects that they did were for friends of ours, and they did an outstanding job. So, we pretty much relied on word of mouth and positive recommendations,” she said. When they initially talked to Owner Chris Marino about the project, he had some great ideas. And, he worked really well with us and the architect, John J. Viscardi, owner of JMK Architectural Services PC, located in East Williston, NY, (jmkarchitectural.com). John has extensive experience with reconstruction of these types of 1930s-era Garden City/ Stewart Manor homes and was able to prepare a design that blended perfectly with the original concept of this dwelling. Throughout the remodel they lived with Elizabeth’s parents, who live close to the home, so she was able to go there on a daily basis to check on the progress and get updates. “I was there every day to check on the progress. Chris would inform me what the plan for the day was and also keep me aware about what decisions would need to be made.”

Doubled in Size

They kept the existing layout of the original living room and dining room. They wanted to increase the square footage and add more space to the home. They knew that they wanted to change the entire layout of the second floor and increase the size. The new home is about 3,000 square feet and includes four bedrooms and two and one-half bathrooms, a kitchen, great room, dining room, and mudroom. The home also includes a laundry room upstairs, which is much more convenient for the family. “We pretty much doubled the size of the home, and it works well for our family of four.” For the most part, Elizabeth says that they knew what they wanted. Chris’s architect helped them with many of the plans. “For instance, Chris suggested using this unique boxed panel molding throughout the home—it turned out beautiful. He had some really intricate design ideas,” she said.

They also knew that they wanted a more open floor plan on the first level to make it easier to entertain. Additionally, the family is active and the children are heavily involved in sports so they built the basement out for the children to create more space for their things.

Over the stovetop a wood mantel was installed, matching the crown molding, which flows into the spacious great room. The powder room on the first floor includes a tile floor, adding to the character of the room.

Overcoming Challenges

According to Chris, a few of the challenges that the project presented were underpinning of the existing foundation walls in the basement. “The new basement ceiling height is 8’3” and a lot of steel beams were installed throughout the basement and first floors [flush beams],” he said. “But we were able to keep the existing structure on three sides of the house; it turned out well.”

The entire project took about six months to complete, and the family has lived there for about two months. The favorite aspects of the new home include the millwork and the molding throughout the home. They are extremely happy with the flow of the home and the rooms. “We are also thrilled with the additional space that the home offers,” Elizabeth says. The bedrooms are spacious with big closets. The master bathroom includes a double sink with natural stone granite countertops. “It turned out beautiful,” Elizabeth says. The hallway bathroom by the additional bedrooms includes white subway tiles as well as granite countertops. The remodeled kitchen includes dark stained hardwood floors, which continue throughout the first level. They chose white

he objective for this project was to add space and create an open floor plan to the existing split level home.

The first floor was remodeled so that the kitchen, dining room and rear breakfast area all flow. The living room area was enlarged, and a second floor master bedroom with walk-in closet, nursery, and laundry room was added. In addition, see the picture on the right of the new deck which was built for additional outdoor living space.
