Imagine lights in your home flashing when your dinner is done cooking, being able to increase ice production from your phone before a dinner party, getting an alert via text message when the kids left the refrigerator door open or being able to monitor and control your appliances’ energy consumption from your smartphone or tablet. This is now the reality of many households across the country thanks to smart appliances. Below are the largest manufacturers of smart appliances, LG Electronics, Whirlpool, Sub-Zero and Wolf, and GE, to help you make a smarter home your reality. LG Electronics

LG’s current line of smart technology consists of the THINQ Technology line. “With LG’s new line of appliances called Smart THINQ, LG is striving to make life ‘good’ for the consumer with its Wi-Fi connected appliances,” said Dave VanderWaal, director of brand marketing, home appliances, of LG Electronics USA. “We have incorporated technologies that make household tasks easier, quicker and more efficient, allowing families to spend less time on chores and more time together.” THINQ Technology consists of five features: Smart Grid, Smart Diagnosis, Smart Access, Smart Adapt and Food Management: Smart Grid: a meter on the home’s appliances to make sure they are using the smallest amount of energy with the least expensive rates; Smart Diagnosis: customers can resolve issues with their appliances quickly and efficiently. The appliance will alert the consumer on their smartphone or tablet for small issues like a

door left open or an off-balance washing machine. For large issues, customers can call a service line and the technician will instruct them to press a sequence of buttons to diagnose the problem, leading to faster resolution; Smart Access: allows customers to monitor their appliances remotely. Customers can keep track of their washing cycle or set the refrigerator temperature using a smartphone or tablet; Smart Adapt: allows customers to download updates for their appliances using a WiFi connection. Customers can access recipes and advanced washing cycles without having to purchase a new product; and Food Management: allows customers to check stock and expiration dates of their food by dragging and dropping icons on an LCD screen. According to VanderWaal, “Regarding additional connectivity options, the next generation line will include Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. This technology simplifies the connection between a consumer’s smartphone and the appliance, so you can easily register and share information between the devices. For example, if a consumer selects a recipe via the smartphone app, but wants it to appear on the refrigerator, it only requires a tap.” Whirlpool

Whirlpool employs 6th Sense Live™ technology in their smart appliances. Bob Bergeth, General Manager Builder Sales of Whirlpool Corporation, said, “The 6th Sense Live platform allows homeowners to remotely connect to their home’s refrigerator, dishwasher and laundry pair. From that, they can track energy consumption and monitor and operate appliances from their computers and mobile devices, be it a tablet or smartphone. This connectivity makes appliances

with 6th Sense Live Technology ideal for homeowners who want greater flexibility and control of home energy consumption.” Customers can also activate specific settings away from home with the Vacation Assistant feature. Smart Nudges and Alerts can tell the customer how the product is functioning. Specifically, alerts can also notify customers when a water filter needs changing, a washing load ends and needs a fan turned on to keep it fresh or what cycle the dishwasher is on, just to name a few notifications. Sub-Zero and Wolf

Sub-Zero and Wolf smart appliances feature the Smart Appliance App and Smart Appliance Module to integrate with the Control4® wireless home control system. For instance, the system “can notify parents when the fridge is open by sending messages if it’s open longer than 90 seconds, say. There are messages to know when to change fridge filter- email, texts, etc.,” said Paul Williams, vice president of security & communications products/support services with Control4. Lights also can flash, music can play or a text message can be sent when internal sensors detect food is finished cooking. “Now instead of having to babysit, I can just take the meat out of the oven,” said Williams. The Smart Appliance App allows customers to receive notifications for instances like when the oven is done preheating or what the current oven temperature is. The app can also be set to lower the refrigerator’s energy consumption during daytime, set to an energy-saving vacation mode or set to increase ice before entertaining, to name a few features. General service requests can be sent via the Control4 System and customers can be notified when there is a problem with an appliance. Sub-Zero built-in refrigerator models and Wolf E wall ovens now come with aftermarket installation for the new Smart Appliance module, which will boost functionality of certain appliances when integrated with the Control4 system. GE

GE’s smart technologies focus on monitoring and controlling appliances for greater energy savings with the Brillion™ Whole-Home Energy Sensor. “We’ve leveled the playing field by providing a product that communicates a home’s continuous real-time energy consumption to consumers without a smart meter,” said

William Paul, product manager, home energy, GE Appliances. “Our new WholeHome Sensor connects to the consumer’s electrical panel and allows them to understand their energy consumption without waiting for their electricity provider to install a smart meter.” The devise pulls data from the home’s large 240-volt applications like a panel box or pool pump to the Nucleus™ energy manager, which then sends the data to the customer’s smartphone or computer. GE also has the Brillion Smart Plugs, which can be plugged into 120-volt outlets to read energy usage through the Nucleus energy manager. Also, Brillion thermostats allow customers to adjust their heating and cooling schedules remotely through their iPhone. Local Appeal of Smart Appliances

Since the technology is so new, smart appliances still attract a smaller segment of overall buyers in the market. Sam Gregory, vice president of sales and marketing with Appliance Distributors Unlimited in Linthicum, MD, likens smart appliances to hi definition televisions, where eventually the technology will take off in homes as customers become more educated and prices become more accessible. Eventually the technology will become more ubiquitous, but it will take time. However, Gina Miori, appliance manager for Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery in Alexandria, VA, said, “Smart appliances have done well in our market for a couple of years. I think the demographic of Washington, D.C. are early adaptors, and they value anything that can simplify their lives.”

Setting Your No matter where you are in the home remodeling process, it’s important that you set your expectations for your remodeled home, as well as for the professionals you are or will be working with. Although it’s best to lay out your needs, wants and goals before you get started, it’s never too late to clarify them. Even though you may prefer to sell your existing home rather than upgrade, that’s not always an option. Before you make a final decision on whether to sell and move, or remodel, it’s advisable to determine the availability of homes for sale. Recently, home prices have been rising and, in some cases, there is a shortage of homes for sale. Although there may be homes for sale in your area, there may not be enough homes with the features that you are looking for. Even if you do decide to buy another house, you may still choose to remodel. This is where setting your expectations comes in. Do Your Homework

In setting your expectations there are a number of factors to look at. Most of these factors entail doing some homework. Depending on your needs and wants, this homework can be relatively simple and straight forward, or much more complex. Just keep in mind that the more prepared you are, the better the outcome will be. As Benjamin Franklin said: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Your homework will likely entail research on a number of aspects associated with your home itself. This research will include style and functionality, as well as many other elements associated with your remodeled home. As you find ideas that you like, you may identify some that you’ll want to avoid.

Part of your homework should also include the selection of the remodeling professionals you choose to work with. Just as it’s important to know what you want for your remodeled home, it’s equally important to know what you want in your remodeler. To ensure a positive remodeling experience it’s essential to verify the credentials and traits of potential designers and contractors. By choosing remodelers who are members of a professional association such as NKBA you will increase your chances of having a successful project. “Your home, for most of us, is our biggest investment, so you want to be comfortable that you can count on the contractor you are hiring,” says Guy Semmes, CR, of Hopkins & Porter. “Does their company have a track record? Not necessarily them personally, but the company you are hiring. You are getting their administrative team, production team, field team and more. So the whole company has to function properly.” Your Budget

Equally important to your pre-planning is determining your budget for your project. In addition to affordability issues, it’s important to formulate your wish list so that it falls within your comfort level. To not do so will set you up for frustration and disappointment. Although it’s not necessary, or advisable for you to determine the detailed costs involved in your

Prioritize

Even though you may not get everything you want, you can certainly end up with a wonderful project and home that you love. The key is to prioritize your needs and wants. For example, functionality may be more important to you than style. Perhaps the priorities may lie in the size of your remodel or possibly the details of the project. By creating and using a wish list of everything you and your family want for your remodeled home you will have taken the first step in determining your priorities. Just as it’s important to share your goals with your remodeler, communicating your priorities is an essential element in preparing for your remodeling project. “It is extremely important for homeowners to prioritize their ‘must have’ features,” says Gilday. “People generally have far more than they can afford and often find out when talking with their contractor that only the first few are really critical to having a successful remodel.” Moving Forward

project, your remodeler will certainly need to know your budgetary constraints in order to create an appropriate proposal. Just as knowing the style and functionality you want is necessary, determining and sharing your budget with the professionals you choose to engage is important in preparing for your project. “A homeowner should have some idea of what they are willing to spend on a project,” says Joseph Gilday of Gilday Company. “You really need to talk about money before the project begins, what your comfort level is in terms of budget. And don’t be afraid to ask your contractor what it’s going to cost if he or she doesn’t bring it up.” “Don’t be afraid to ask your contractor if they have a job cost system,” advises Semmes. “In other words, are they keeping track of your money. Can they tell you bi-weekly what they’ve spent on your job so you can make sure you’re getting the value they promised.” Options

Even if it’s not possible to get everything you want, there are often alternative choices and options to ensure that you will be happy with your remodeled home. As you do your research, keep in mind that there are many options that will satisfy your needs and wants. Although your first choice may not be within your reach, you can often find alternatives which may end up being the best choice for you and your family. By having a clear idea of your goals for your newly remodeled home and sharing those goals and your vision, you’ll be closer to achieving your objectives. The remodeling professionals you choose to work with can and will assist you in selecting various options to ensure that you will achieve your goals.

By learning about the current market in your area, clarifying your expectations, researching and prioritizing your options, and determining your budget you will have taken the first necessary steps in creating a successful remodeling project. Editor’s Note:

BATHROOM DESIGN When Aramesh and Majid Darvishian moved into their 1990’s vintage home in an upscale Great Falls neighborhood, they knew they would be doing some remodeling. A younger couple with more modern tastes, the existing colonial-style bathroom with ragged looking cabinetry and a smaller shower didn’t meet their needs. “We were looking to create a bathroom with modern amenities,” says Majid. “Our goals included enlarging the bathroom, installing a larger steam shower, more closet space and the use of brighter colors,” he says. The couple also wanted an open look from the master bedroom into the bathroom. “I’m a bit of an architect myself,” Majid comments, “so we envisioned some of the things we liked that we’ve seen elsewhere and incorporated our tastes into them. We’d seen the double-sided fireplace and the Amazon shower heads, which provide high volume water flow, and wanted to include them in our design.” The couple hired Michael Nash Design Build & Homes in Fairfax to help them turn their dream master bath into reality. With more than 30 years of remodeling experience, the firm specializes in design through construction, including interior design. Turning The Vision Into Reality

“After our design staff met with Mr. and Mrs. Darvishian and listened to their modern vision for the bathroom, we went to the drafting table to create the space they envisioned,” says Sonny Nazemian, C.I.D., CR, CKBR, GCP, UDCR, EET and president of Michael Nash. “Because the proposed bathroom and walk-in closet were partially above the garage, we had to deal with a couple of load bearing walls,” Nazemian says. “We also took two feet of space from the existing bedroom to create the extra room needed for the new bathroom.” Finally, the new master bath design required all fixtures and plumbing to be reconfigured. First, a much larger shower stall featuring a custom, frameless glass enclosure was installed where the room’s vanities used to be located. In addition to the Amazon shower heads, it’s equipped with a steam unit and flush-mounted body sprayers. A large spa-like whirlpool tub for soaking was also installed. A high-tech toilet, bidet combo unit was installed where the previous shower had been located. More floor space was created for this “hidden” fixture by reframing the headroom from the stairwell below it.

glass doors. The closets provide significantly more storage space and include a middle island with shoe racks. Automatic lights come on when the closet doors are opened. Great Results

Stunning new espresso finish vanities with slab on marble countertops and two tumbled marble vessel sinks add a spark to the room’s design. They were installed where the toilet had been located as it is a larger wall allowing for tall linen cabinets on either side of the vanities. A recessed mirror with back lighting is a spectacular addition to this new modern space. Large white marble tiles create a floor that contrasts beautifully with dark metallic wall tiles used for effect. Heated floors run throughout the new space. A river rock contemporary double-sided fireplace was installed between the bedroom and bathroom, overlooking the whirlpool. Adjacent to it is an enlarged opening with pocketed glass French doors with matching espresso trim. Finally, custom-designed, built-in his and hers closets feature matching cherry espresso finishes covered by obscure

There are so many great features.” “The team at Michael Nash definitely went above and beyond to make sure we were happy with the end result,” he stresses. “The results exceeded our expecatations.” The Darvishians found Michael Nash Design Build & Homes through a referral. Friends of theirs had used the firm to a master bedroom and bathroom remodel as well and were very happy with the results. Importantly, the Michael Nash crew cleaned up the jobsite at the end of each day of work, which minimized the interruption to the homeowners’ lifestyles during construction. And because Michael Nash uses its own employees, the construction process goes more smoothly. There’s no need to hire and schedule subcontractors which can sometimes create delays in the project timeline. “I can’t say enough about their professionalism,” says Majid. “There were attentive to our needs and very accommodating,” he concludes. When Trina and Rick Mostyn purchased their new home along the South River near Annapolis, they knew the 22-yearold structure would need some work. Soon, however, a moderate rehab turned into a major renovation with the house being leveled and rebuilt. “We basically took the first floor down to the bare studs and built it back up,” Rick says. “It’s really a new house.” And while the home is stunning in general, the signature room is its kitchen.

To achieve all of their objectives, Trina and Rick settled on a design that’s big on function and pays attention to form.

Function and Form

For the Mostyns, the kitchen is the hub of their home. It’s a place where their family and friends gather to share a meal or to just be in each other’s company. So having a large, functional kitchen was especially important. “We have a huge family including five children and lots of relatives,” says Trina. “Everyone comes over to our house for everything and everybody gathers in the kitchen,” she says, “so we needed room to cook for and feed 15 to 20 people while still being able to hang out.” From a design standpoint, the couple wanted an open concept kitchen with a casual, contemporary feel. They also wanted the kitchen to feature clean, sleek lines and

First, two islands were created to provide flow and access across the kitchen, connecting the various work areas and provide a nice transition to the adjacent dining area. Distinct work zones include the cooking area with a concrete island top and integrated trough sink that can be used from both sides, a six-burner pro-style range top and stylish glass and stainless hood, two under counter ovens (one is elevated for easier access with ample landing space above), a speed cooker above the warming drawer, separate 36” refrigerator and freezer units, plenty of work surface and lots of storage including wide, deep drawers and multiple tray storage cabinets.

The second island is across from the beverage center and includes integrated refrigerator drawers, more storage and a floating glass top elevated to accommodate four stools. The beverage center includes a bar sink, a single dishwasher drawer, pull out waste and upper cabinets with glass doors. The main sink is located under the window with a nice balance of matching upper cabinets; pull out waste and recycling bins; a dishwasher and more counter space. The whole section is set into a bump out which allowed the two islands to be aligned with the cooking area focal point and leave comfortable aisles and traffic patterns. Horizontal grain bamboo cabinets are complimented with light colors on the floor and wall tile. The perimeter countertops are “White Prince” granite with a textured finish and the island tops are light gray concrete. The palette is highlighted with the stainless steel accents of the appliances, fixtures and hardware. “The bamboo brought warmth into the kitchen where everything else is glass and marble and concrete,” Trina comments. “We wanted contemporary, but we didn’t want it to be industrial; we wanted it to be warm and welcoming.” Eight-and-a-half-foot-tall cabinets were used with a row of glass doors along the top which left enough room for a trim board with concealed accent lighting just below the 9’ ceiling. Toe kick lighting around the islands adds to the effect. “We were looking for a lot of indirect light in the evenings,” Rick says. “We would have people over and we’d go into the living room and you want to leave some type of light on. And it’s worked really well.” Finally, a custom buffet cabinet was designed in a contrasting grey wood finish which features a TV lift so the unit is fully concealed when not in use. A large walk-in pantry closet is tucked in right behind the prep area and features floor to ceiling storage and a window that brings in plenty of natural light. The completed kitchen gives the Mostyns everything they wanted. It works well on a day-to-day basis and is just as functional when there are numerous cooks and lots of guests. “We expected it would become a big, huge gathering place and that’s exactly how it works,” Trina says. Finding the Right Contractor Makes a Difference

Trina researched and read reviews for several contractors before narrowing her call list down to four, including Kitchen Encounters. Not only were they the first to follow up with her, but both Trina and Rick hit it off with Mark White, CKD, CBD, in their initial meetings. “I liked Mark right off the bat,” says Trina. “He draws up ideas and considers different options using his pencil and an eraser. Not only does he have great ideas, but he’s open to your ideas too. He understands that, at the end of the day, it’s our house.” “It was a great collaboration of minds,” concurs Rick. “We knew what we wanted and didn’t want and he got that. In the end, his team really delivered the goods.” “I can’t imagine the results being any better,” Rick says. “When we first walked in, we both said ‘wow,’” adds Trina. “We lived her a year now and we still say there’s not much we would have done differently.”

Jesus Quispe has a two-bedroom condo in a landmark building in Washington’s Dupont Circle neighborhood. A historic building built in 1894, it has plenty of character, but its only bathroom was too small. With only enough room for a pedestal sink and a stand-alone claw foot tub, it didn’t meet Jesus’s needs. “The bathroom was really too small for me,” Jesus says. “I wanted to make better use of the space I had.” In particular, he was looking for a large walk-in shower and more storage space. “I also wanted a contemporary design that would maintain a hint of the original finishes and I wanted to keep the original bath’s mosaic floor,” he comments. After doing some research online, he shared his ideas with the team at Landis Construction Corporation. Working together, they transformed his ideas into reality.

For

The mosaic floor also served as a color inspiration for new materials used in the space. The rust colored mosaic floor tiles are echoed in the glass tiles used on the outward-facing shower wall. The gray mosaic tiles are repeated on the side walls of the shower and on the shower floor. A Result that Speaks for Itself

“I was looking for something contemporary that also fit with the original floor,” Jesus stresses, “and the new design is perfect. Every time someone uses the bathroom, they comment about how beautiful it is. It really gets people’s attention,” he says. Importantly, the design also meets Jesus’s need for more space. He reports that the new bathroom no longer has a cramped feel and that he has all the room he needs. Selecting a Contractor

Challenges and Creative Solutions

The dimensions of the original bath were roughly 6’ x 6.5’. By removing a shallow linen closet accessible from the hallway and another closet in the master bedroom, the space was expanded for a 4’ x 4’ shower pan. The larger shower space included a shower bench and niche for toiletries. The pedestal sink was removed and replaced with a sink with a floating custom walnut cabinet below for storage. The banjo-shaped Calacatta Gold marble countertop around the sink extends behind the toilet, creating more countertop space. A glass shower wall and large mirror were also added to create a more open feeling in the space. A Contemporary Look with a Nod to the Past

While talking through design options, Jesus and the Landis team were determined to preserve the bathroom’s 100-year old, Romanesque revival mosaic floor. This move preserved a piece of history and old world craftsmanship, added to the texture of the bathroom and saved the homeowner the cost of replacing the flooring.

Jesus credits Landis for their persistence and flexibility. “I have a very hectic schedule and travel a fair amount for work,” he says. “Many of the contractors I talked to about the project, never got back to me. Certification Designations The hallmark for kitchen and bath professionals, NKBA certification is based on in-depth testing and extensive industry experience. NKBA-certified members must also meet annual continuing education requirements. The NKBA certifies kitchen and bath professionals in various levels of expertise, and provides two distinct paths; one for the kitchen & bath designers and one for non-design professionals. According to a 2010 survey conducted by FleishmanHillard, 80% of consumers prefer to work with certified kitchen designers over uncertified designers. Members can earn the following certifications and have been identified throughout the directory. NKBA Certified Kitchen & Bath Designers NKBA-certified designers demonstrate comprehensive knowledge in kitchen and bath design, as well as construction, mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems. They are widely recognized as experts in the NKBA Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines with Access Standards, which recognize the importance of consumer health, safety and welfare in kitchen and bath design. Our certified designers are also well respected for their skill in assessing consumers’ individual needs and creating designs that meet and exceed their expectations. AKBD - Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer Applicants must have a minimum of two (2) years experience: one year with kitchen/bath industry; one year in a related industry. They must also earn a minimum of 30 hours of NKBA education or NKBA approved college coursework. Education must be completed before the candidate’s application for certification can be approved. CKD/CBD – Certified Kitchen Designer/Certified Bath Designer CKDs and CBDs specialize in the design, planning, and execution of residential kitchens and bathrooms, and prove advanced knowledge of technical and personal communication skills. Applicants must document a minimum of seven years experience: three years full-time residential kitchen/bath design experience, including design execution or project management; plus four years of full-time related industry experience. Applicants must also earn a minimum of 60 hours of NKBA education or NKBA approved college coursework. Education must be completed before the candidate’s application for certification can be approved. Applicants must pass their AKBD academic exam prior to scheduling their CKD/CBD design exam.

CKE/CBE - Certified Kitchen Educators and Certified Bathroom Educators CKE/CBEs are college instructors who specialize in teaching residential kitchen and/ or bathroom design. They understand the unique qualifications required for kitchen and bathroom design specialization, and they transfer their knowledge to interior design students. A college instructor achieves the CKE or CBE designation by proving experience as an interior design college educator and passing the CKD exam for CKE certification, or the CBD exam for CBE certification. CKEs and CBEs must demonstrate a minimum of seven (7) years of full-time teaching experience in interior design or a minimum of three (3) years teaching experience combined with formal education for a total of seven (7) years. No formal design experience is required. Applicants must also earn a minimum of 60 hours of NKBA education or NKBA approved college coursework. Education must be completed before the candidate’s application for certification can be approved. Applicants must pass their AKBD academic exam prior to scheduling their CKD/CBD design exam. This individual is qualified to work with our certified designers to meet the needs of the consumer. The candidate for this certification must meet specific educational requirements and pass a comprehensive academic exam. CKBP - Certified Kitchen and Bath Professional CKBP is our only non-design-oriented certification; one that benefits all industry segments. In order to possess this universal certification, the holder must prove a high level of proficiency in professional knowledge, industry experience, and education in the kitchen and bath industry.
