Many of us find it hard to survive in today’s economy with increasing costs, lack of lenders, and a decreased number of clients. Whether you have been in business one or 40 years, keeping the business going can be overwhelming. For these reasons, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) is more important than ever and can be the lynch pin to keep things together. Some of our members have shared their thoughts on sustainability. So how does one stay motivated and profitable through these hard economic times? Certified Remodeler (CR) Designed to recognize and identify fullservice remodelers. Candidates must have a minimum of five years experience and be employed by or own a firm that derives 90 percent of its sales volume from remodeling. Certified Remodeler Associate (CRA) Recognizes individuals who actively support the remodeling industry, such as architects, designers, educators, manufacturers, publishers, suppliers and consultants. Certified Remodeler Specialist (CRS) Reserved for remodelers who specialize in a particular area of the industry, such as roofing or flooring, etc.

Master Certified Remodeler (MCR) This designation recognizes Certified Remodelers that have demonstrated commitment to the remodeling industry through support of their local chapter, NARI National, and/or their local community. The MCR identifies Certified Remodelers that have withstood the test of time and continue to be successful within the industry. Candidates must complete and submit this application for consideration by the NARI Certification Board. In addition to completing and submitting an application to qualify for the MCR certification, candidates must be a Certified Remodeler for a minimum of 10 consecutive years and hold another NARI certification. Candidates must have been involved with their local NARI chapter or NARI National and/or involvement as a leader in the local community. Candidates must submit a letter of recommendation from their chapter executive or chapter president or three letters of recommendation from recent clients. Universal Design Certified Remodeler (UDCR) This designation includes remodelers with knowledge and skills in a broad range of universal design and remodeling. Individuals with the UDCR designation are recognized as experienced remodelers with skills and knowledge in all aspects of universal design and remodeling. Candidates must complete and submit this application for consideration by the NARI Certification Board. In addition to completing and submitting an application, to qualify for the UDCR certification exam, candidates must have been in the remodeling industry for a minimum of 5 years. Candidates must also have completed a minimum of 8 hours of universal design remodeling/building related education.

Certified Lead Carpenter (CLC) Designed for lead carpenters who are skilled and knowledgeable in the technical, hands-on aspects of their work, but also have demonstrated skill and knowledge in project management, supervision and customer service. Candidates must have a minimum five years experience with at least two of those years as a lead carpenter. Companies who believe in providing a quality product will make sure their lead carpenters are trained and certified so they can produce better jobs, be more professional, run projects more efficiently, and interact more proactively with their customers. Certified Kitchen & Bath Remodeler (CKBR) This designation allows homeowners to identify contractors who do extensive work in kitchen and bath remodeling, and have gone the extra mile to improve themselves and their firm’s capabilities in these areas. The CKBR certification addresses the unique aspects of kitchen & bath design and remodeling, including technical expertise and new product knowledge. Green Certified Professional (GCP) The GCP designation is designed to recognize and identify remodelers who apply green or sustainable principles to their remodeling projects. They understand key green building concepts including energy efficiency, site management and use, indoor air quality, water conservation and the use of building materials and finishes. The GCP certification addresses how green remodeling can make homes more durable, efficient, sustainable, healthier to live in and less expensive to operate.

EPA ADVISES HOMEOWNERS OF NEW LEAD RULE

f you live in a home built before 1978, chances are you may be exposed to lead. Common renovation activities like sanding, drilling, and demolition can distribute harmful lead dust and chips, creating a hazardous environment for homeowners. To protect against this risk, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a rule requiring the use of more stringent lead-safe practices aimed at preventing lead poisoning. Under the new rule, which began in April 2010, contractors performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978 must be certified and must follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination. Lead is a toxic metal that was used for many years in products found in and around our homes. Lead may cause a range of health effects, from behavioral problems and learning disabilities, to seizures and death. Children six years old and under are most at risk. The EPA has encouraged lead-safe practices for many years, but the new regulations give remodelers and homeowners a higher standard to refer to. According to the new rules, contractors working on homes built before 1978 will have to have a certified lead remodeler on staff. Remodelers will get certified by the EPA by participating and passing a concentrated eight-hour training course about the dangers of lead paint, how to set up work areas that will not expose residents, minimize dust, and leave the work area clean. Contractors will use a number of protective measures, including: wearing appropriate eyewear, clothing, and repertory protection on the job. Inside the work areas remodelers will remove furniture and belongings during the project or cover them with heavy plastic sheeting, close and seal vents, and turn off forced air heat and air conditioning systems if necessary. In addition, remodelers will be required to give each homeowner a pamphlet called, “Renovate Right: Important Lead Hazard Information for Families, Child Care Providers, and Schools,”

which includes a sheet in it for the homeowner to sign that acknowledges that they have read it. LEAD PAINT RULE COMMENT PERIOD EXTENDED The comment period for the EPA's proposal to add clearance testing to the lead rule has been extended to Aug. 6. Remodelers and other affected industry professionals are urged to take this extra time to submit comments against adding lead dust testing and meeting lead clearance for specific remodeling activities. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has called on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to drop its plan to require remodelers to perform clearance testing after completing jobs in homes where they either replaced or worked around lead-painted surfaces. It’s the latest move in NAHB’s ongoing attempts to bring common sense and costeffectiveness to the Lead: Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule, which became effective April 22. Ironically, NAHB filed its comments on clearance testing just hours before EPA announced it would extend the deadline to submit letters and petitions regarding the new rule, which NAHB had asked the agency to do to allow for more study on the impact of clearance testing. NAHB members and others now have until Aug. 6 to submit comments. Under the current rule, remodelers must use a white paper cloth to clean the areas where they have been working and then compare the color of the residue on the cloth to an EPA-supplied card to determine whether the lead paint dust has been removed from any painted surfaces.

Under the clearance testing rule proposed by EPA, the remodeler would be required to send samples of surfaces both in the work area and immediately outside it to testing labs or hire a certified testing specialist to examine the home. The new rule adds significant liability to the remodeling firm as it makes the remodeler responsible for lead exposure issues existing in the home before any work is performed, as well as outside the area in which the renovation work has taken place. The added expenses of testing—and accompanying liability insurance—will be passed on to the homeowner, making the certified remodeler’s work more expensive. That’s not just a problem for remodelers’ bottom lines, but for consumer safety, NAHB said. “NAHB has consistently recognized that having remodeling activities performed by a professional remodeler makes homes safer, yet this proposal will further incentivize consumers to do the work themselves, hire uncertified contractors, or worse—do nothing at all.” NAHB also questioned EPA’s legal authority to codify the proposed requirements. “The proposal is another 180degree shift from the agency’s 2008 Final Renovation, Repair and Painting rule, [yet] EPA has not provided any additional data or evidence to justify dust wipe testing or clearance, and its Dust Study reaffirms the reliability of the cleaning verification work practice as sufficient for reducing lead dust levels below the current lead hazard standard,” the comments said. The comments also questioned the impact of the proposed rule on the energy-efficiency tax credit and other incentive programs, pointing out that the money consumers receive for insulating their homes or buying more efficient heating and cooling equipment will be eaten up in the additional costs required by clearance testing. What began as a general kitchen remodel turned out to be a transformation of the entire first level of this Tampa Bay two-story contemporary.

neighbors, and I saw the trucks there on a daily basis. I had also seen some of their local advertising, so I looked into using them for the project. They were also highly recommended.” David, CR, CKBR, and Sharon Mueller, Owners of Mueller Remodeling Inc., met with the family and discussed what they all wanted done to the home. “After meeting with David and Sharon, I liked what I saw and they did great work for our neighbors, so we didn’t even look into other companies and ultimately decided to go with them [Mueller Remodeling],” Eugen said.

REMODELER RECOMMENDED The project was the first major remodeling project that they had embarked on in the home since purchasing it. “I have done some remodeling work on my restaurant, but not on our home, so we wanted to find the right remodeler to do the job,” Eugen said. In the past, their neighbors next door had some remodeling work done on their kitchen and throughout their home. Mueller Remodeling Inc. had done the work and Eugen liked what he saw. “I loved the work that they did for our

COMING UP WITH IDEAS According to Eugen, Eileen pretty much knew what she wanted as far as design. “Eileen went through magazines and came up with color schemes that she liked. Then, she sat down with Sharon and they came up with a great layout for the kitchen,” he said. According to David and Sharon, the initial plan was for a kitchen remodel. “They wanted to update the kitchen and expand the area, which flowed with the adjoining areas,” Sharon said. However, when they first met, they found several

ugen and Eileen Fuhrmann purchased their newly built home in 1978; the two-story, three-bedroom, and three-bathroom home was perfect to raise their children in. Now, with their children out of the home, they decided to entirely remodel the first level of the home. “It started out with us just wanting to remodel the kitchen, but as we thought of some general plans, we kept finding other areas of the home that needed updating—including major floor work and plumbing throughout the home,” Eugen said.

BEAUTIFUL FIRST-LEVEL TRANSFORMATION problems throughout the home, which included: • A feeling of dampness within the home; • A smell of mustiness throughout; • The kitchen cabinets were collecting moisture and mildew; and • There was evidence of moisture on the carpet tack strips and foyer cedar baseboards. CHALLENGES TO OVERCOME Upon further discussion and discovery of the dampness problem, the kitchen remodel remained the number one priority, and the project expanded to include the following: • New tile flooring on the entire first

level; foyer, living room, dining room, kitchen, family room, guest bathroom, and laundry, allowing all concrete floors to have moisture proofing; • Remove the first-level “popcorn” texture on all of the ceilings; update the guest bathroom, including organization for bathroom items; • Update the family room fireplace, lighting, shelving, including space for a television; • Update the laundry room; and • Update the entry foyer and the adjoining stairway to the second level. According to Sharon, “Eileen was excited and very explicit on her wants and needs; therefore she supplied us with many magazine pictures depicting

the finished look. We worked hard to customize the home and detail it to duplicate the desired look she was hoping for. All of the colors selected were chosen to blend with a piece of selected upholstery material which eventually became an ottoman in the family room.” The couple moved out of the home during construction and the project took about four months to complete. The new kitchen has brand new painted cabinets with a customized color. All new stainless steel appliances include a cooktop, wall ovens, and a sub zero refrigerator with a paneled front to match the cabinets. Imperial Green granite countertops in a mixed green/grey hue match the adjoining living room fireplace, which has a new custom mantel. The company also replaced the old staircase, which turned out perfectly. SOLUTIONS ACCOMPLISHED To solve the dampness problem, a new climate-control system was installed; high efficiency Carrier equipment with variable speeds and humidity control was added. Two systems were installed—a new system for the first floor, and one for the second floor. All the ductwork was replaced on the first level; second-level duct work was cleaned and sanitized. Additionally, all of the air returns were replaced on both levels. Due to the moisture content in the concrete floors, all of the floors were coated with Red Guard moisture proofing. To further eliminate any future underslab water problems, the 30-year-old water lines were abandoned. New water lines were run overhead for the kitchen, guest bathroom, and laundry room.

hen Laurie Echevarria and her husband first purchased their home about 16 years ago, the kitchen “was to die for,” based on where they were currently moving from. Raising their two daughters in the four-bedroom, three-bathroom, 3,000square-foot home, the brick cape house suited their needs and fit their family’s lifestyle. Now, years later and with their daugh-

ters pretty much out of the house in college, Laurie and her husband have a different lifestyle and wanted to better use the first-floor level and start with a clean slate. “We wanted to pretty much gut most of the first level, which included the kitchen, family room, dining area, and also re-do areas on the second level which included our master bedroom and master bathroom as well as our daughter’s bathroom,” Laurie said.

FINDING AN AREA REMODELER Laurie said that they looked into several area remodelers. After talking with some friends about the project, Don Strobel, CR, CKBR, GCP Owner of Strobel Design Build, in St. Petersburg, FL, was highly recommended by one of her husband’s friends. “We also had gotten information about the company through a card in the mail, and he was highly recommended by my husband’s friend—so ultimately we decided to go with them [Strobel Design Build],” Laurie said. According to Don Strobel, the 20-yearold kitchen had worn its way into the habits of the clients’ lives. “During our initial meeting the Echevarria’s excitement about the new design possibilities was enthusiastic,” Don said. “Laurie’s dream kitchen had to include a separate sink and island for food prep, a dedicated desk space for a computer, phones, cookbooks, gas cooking, double ovens, informal dining area, large counter expanse, a traditional feeling of comfort in the overall design. In short, she wanted everything in the new kitchen she didn’t have in the old one.” A big priority for Laurie was to also include a laundry area inside. “I was doing laundry in the hot, humid garage for years, and I really wanted to find an area to bring it inside.”

WISH LIST The original kitchen was dark and crowded without a dedicated work space and it lacked enough countertops for Laurie’s liking. The dated oak cabinets were from the 1970s, and the existing kitchen had a poor traffic pattern. The amount of storage space was inadequate as well. According to Laurie, there were several things that she wanted the remodel to accomplish. Once they made plans with Strobel Design Build, the plans included: • Complete kitchen and dining re-do with contemporary function but an old world ambience with a French-country design; • Expand and open granite counter space with a sink prep island; 22

• Work desk and message center for family apart from the main kitchen; • Eat-in capability in an informal setting; • Improved and strategically placed lighting and high-performance appliances; and • Hand-crafted looking cabinets to match the remodeled décor. TIGHT DEADLINE Since the first level of the home would have to be almost entirely gutted, the family decided to rent a nearby house for six months while the remodel was being done. “We gave them a six-month time frame, so they had to stay on time for the project,” Laurie said. “They did a great job with that.” UNIQUE FLOOR PLAN According to Don, the floor space was limited so the plan had to be compact enough to fit a comfortable traffic pattern. The existing eight-foot ceilings had to stay due to the living areas above.

SPACE-SAVING SOLUTIONS One solution to the space challenge was to place the dining area in a cozy banquette with oversized cushions and chairs. Additional space-saving solutions included running the upper cabinets to the ceiling for added storage and utilizing one end of the kitchen for an out-of-traffic desk area. The convenient pot filler over the cook top keeps the water functionally handy. The cabinet fronts with a warm mocha glaze suggest an old world, hand-crafted quality. The large white farmhouse sink adds dramatic emphasis to the cabinet line under the window. The sinks deep single bowl adds function when large pots need to be cleaned. Instant-hot water, filtered water, hand spray, and standard water all help the chef perform her tasks without effort. Additionally, the hidden under-cabinet lights show off the heavy textural quality of the facetted stone backsplash. And, the large and practical pot storage NARI TAMPA BAY AREA

UPSCALE FRENCH COUNTRY WITH OLD WORLD AMBIENCE is right at hand with the full extension deep drawers beneath. We had a very large corner wall/fireplace in our den area that took up much needed space so we gutted that and voila—there was extra square footage to put the kitchen, a banquette, and our den.” HAPPY WITH RESULTS According to Laurie, Don and Strobel Design Build did a fantastic job. “Not only did they do an incredible job with the interior, but they also turned the ugliest house on the street into one of the most beautiful and unique houses on the street,” she said. “Our house went from a brick cape house to a French country cottage with a stone front wall and paver circular drive! It may be the smallest house on the street, but it has the most character and I love it.” The family couldn’t be happier with the finished result. “I am very pleased with the remodeling work and I couldn’t be happier with the way the project turned out,” Laurie said. The project won Strobel Design Build a Contractor of The Year award for 2009, as well. “They were here everyday and Strobel Design Build was very reliable.” The family hosts frequent large family gatherings and they received glowing reports from “many cooks in the kitchen” during dinners served there. The warm furniture-like charm of the lightly glazed cabinetry combined with wood floors and natural stone accents fit perfectly in the homes French country décor.

hen Mark and Cindy Ziegler decided to stay in their 1950s bungalow on Davis Islands, in Tampa, FL, they also decided they would like a little more space. While the two-bedroom, one-bath, 1,200-square-foot home Mark purchased about 20 years ago was comfortable for him, Cindy, and their dog, they could see it had a lot of potential. To make the home a better fit for their needs and lifestyle they envisioned a master suite, a guest bedroom, guest bath, and a room to entertain. The existing home included a detached carport and a screened-in covered porch on the rear. Realizing that the carport and screened porch where rarely used for more then collecting clutter, it was decided these two areas would go. Considering the limited square footage of the property, they decided this would be the perfect area to add the new space. “We knew we’d have to sacrifice the carport, but we thought that in the long run it would definitely be worth it and would much better fit our needs,” Cindy said. The existing carport also housed the

washer and dryer, which Cindy wanted inside the home. A two-phase approach was designed. First, the additional square footage on to the rear of the house would include the guest bedroom, guest bath, and family room. The second phase would be the master suite with walk-in closets and a roomy master bath. FINDING THE RIGHT REMODELER They contacted an area architect who provided them with ideas and plans. They researched several area remodelers and asked them each to review the plans and space, and submit cost estimates for the project. Doug King, Co-Owner of West Coast Remodelers & Construction, in Tampa, FL, was one of the companies that they looked into as well. “We researched about three to four companies,” Cindy said. “They all submitted estimates and we got several ideas and quotes for the project. Doug’s quote was very competitive and he really listened to what we wanted out of the remodel. So, we decid-

ed to go with West Coast Remodelers & Construction.” “We had several meetings with them to determine what they were looking to accomplish, this way the project should flow smoothly,” Doug said. “Our policy is to utilize written agreements on even the smallest of details. This ensures that we are able to build a great room addition and everyone is happy when it is completed.” FROM START TO FINISH The new guest bedroom includes two spacious closets; a pair of art deco glass block windows and has hardwood floors, which were matched up with the existing hardwood floors throughout the rest of the home. The new guest bathroom includes an area for the washer and dryer (Cindy’s favorite part), a frameless glass, walk-in shower and a beautiful natural stone top on a custom vanity. The new family room has 18-inch mottled earth tone tiles and boasts warm eggplant-colored walls. The room is finished off on one side with space-saving sliding glass pocket doors (West Coast’s recommendation) into the

dining room and a beautiful 8-foot wide Pella sliding glass door with integrated blind system leading out to the backyard. STAYED WITHIN BUDGET It was important to Cindy and Mark that they stayed within their budget and Doug and West Coast Remodelers made this a priority throughout the remodel. “Doug and Larry came up with some wonderful ideas and helped us stay within our budget,” Cindy said. “They would see what we liked and didn’t like and came up with some very cost effective alternatives that worked within the space we had.” “One of the things that we pride ourselves on at West Coast Remodelers & Construction is that the price we quote is THE price,” Doug said. “Nothing changes unless the owner requests a change or if unknowns are uncovered during the process.”

Now I’m excited to move forward with the next project—the creation of the new master suite. Doug and Larry did a great job and were very professional to work with.
