he National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) New York is a not-for-profit trade association dedicated exclusively to the welfare of the remodeling industry and its customers. Its purpose is to promote professionalism in the industry through education, certification programs, networking and information sharing. As a homeowner, NARI is a free resource for you to take advantage of. One goal of NARI is to help homeowners find the right professional partner to do their next project. Members of NARI New York include remodeling contractors, design/build firms, designers and architects, specialty contractors, suppliers, manufacturers, lending institutions, and other related professionals. When you hire one of our members, you are getting a professional dedicated to making sure you have a positive remodeling experience. In addition, as homeowners are searching for the right company to take on their next project, NARI members have taken the time and effort to go the extra mile to continuously learn, to stay abreast of all new building codes as it pertains to safety regulations for their homeowners, and earn any new certifications or designations as mandated by the county, state, and national codes. They are also insured. When considering a remodel, alteration,

or addition to your home, it is always a best practice to hire a licensed remodeling contractor, whom has proof of insurance, and can supply references on request. It is important to remember that you are purchasing a service and not a product. It helps if that person has committed themselves to take the extra mile to participate in their professional association. NARI has established guidelines and expectations of how a professional remodeler member is to execute their business for the duration of the project and to the satisfaction of the mutual contract. Running a remodeling company or a construction-related company can be sometimes daunting in these recent economic times. Many of us find it hard to survive in today’s economy with increasing costs, lack of lenders, and a decreased number of clients. Whether you have been in business one or 40 years, keeping the business going can be overwhelming. For these reasons, NARI is more important than ever and can be the starting point to keep things together. So how does one stay motivated and profitable? Get involved and engage yourself and your company. Get out in your community and volunteer your time and expertise. Mix with people of influence to promote your positive message. There’s always something good you can make happen. NARI is the best it has ever been; without an involved membership there is no success in an organization. So, I ask you to find opportunities in our organization to be active. Join a committee, attend our monthly membership meetings, go to an educational forum or help your local community by teaming up with NARI. NARI Certified Experts GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND Certification

Designations

ou can trust a professional remodeling contractor with NARI certification to have access to the latest industry information via conventions, educational programs, meetings, trade publications and expos that feature up-to-the-minute products, materials and techniques. Only serious professionals with a real desire to excel in the industry are eligible to participate in NARI’s rigorous certification program, which teaches and tests skill sets, safety issues, and ethical business practices. When you see any of the certifications described on this page, you’ll know that the affiliated remodeling contractor or company has taken the time to meet performance and business criteria that surpass industry standards. Certified Remodeler (CR) Designed to recognize and identify full-service remodelers. Candidates must have a minimum of five years experience and be employed by or own a firm that derives 90 percent of its sales volume from remodeling. Certified Remodeler Associate (CRA) Recognizes individuals who actively support the remodeling industry, such as architects, designers, educators, manufacturers, publishers, suppliers and consultants. Certified Remodeler Specialist (CRS) Reserved for remodelers who specialize in a particular area of the industry, such as roofing or flooring, etc.

Master Certified Remodeler (MCR) This designation recognizes Certified Remodelers that have demonstrated commitment to the remodeling industry through support of their local chapter, NARI National, and/or their local community. The MCR identifies Certified Remodelers that have withstood the test of time and continue to be successful within the industry. Candidates must complete and submit this application for consideration by the NARI Certification Board. In addition to completing and submitting an application to qualify for the MCR certification, candidates must be a Certified Remodeler for a minimum of 10 consecutive years and hold another NARI certification. Candidates must have been involved with their local NARI chapter or NARI National and/or involvement as a leader in the local community. Candidates must submit a letter of recommendation from their chapter executive or chapter president or three letters of recommendation from recent clients. Universal Design Certified Remodeler (UDCR) Individuals with the UDCR designation are recognized as experienced remodelers with skills and knowledge in all aspects of universal design and remodeling. Candidates must complete and submit this application for consideration by the NARI Certification Board. In addition to completing and submitting an application, to qualify for the UDCR certification exam, candidates must have been in the remodeling industry for a minimum of 5 years. Candidates must also have completed a minimum of 8 hours of universal design remodeling/ building related education.

Certified Lead Carpenter (CLC) Designed for lead carpenters who are skilled and knowledgeable in the technical, hands-on aspects of their work, but also have demonstrated skill and knowledge in project management, supervision and customer service. Candidates must have a minimum five years experience with at least two of those years as a lead carpenter. Companies who believe in providing a quality product will make sure their lead carpenters are trained and certified so they can produce better jobs, be more professional, run projects more efficiently, and interact more proactively with their customers. Certified Kitchen & Bath Remodeler (CKBR) This designation allows homeowners to identify contractors who do extensive work in kitchen and bath remodeling, and have gone the extra mile to improve themselves and their firm’s capabilities in these areas. The CKBR certification addresses the unique aspects of kitchen & bath design and remodeling, including technical expertise and new product knowledge. Green Certified Professional (GCP) The GCP designation is designed to recognize and identify remodelers who apply green or sustainable principles to their remodeling projects. They understand key green building concepts including energy efficiency, site management and use, indoor air quality, water conservation and the use of building materials and finishes. The GCP certification addresses how green remodeling can make homes more durable, efficient, sustainable, healthier to live in and less expensive to operate.

The New York City/Long Island Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) was contacted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation to help one of their “wish children.” Six-year-old Steven Heckman was diagnosed with Leukemia last summer and just when the family thought that things could not get worse—their home was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.

The ambitious rebuild included: all new plumbing, electric, HVAC, siding, windows, doors, landscaping and a new roof. The generous NARI volunteers worked seven days a week with the plan to have the home finished when the Heckman’s returned from the Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World. Echoing many contributors, Jeff Nobers, Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations for 84 Lumber Co., said that they supplied lumber and brand-new windows for the new home. “When we heard of the project, we immediately knew that we wanted to get involved. This family was in need and we wanted to help,” Jeff said.

NARI Members Rebuild Home

Throughout its history on Long Island, the New York City/ Long Island chapter of National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and its members have taken time away from their jobs and businesses to help those in need as a way to say thank you to the community that supports them. With their kindness and generosity, NARI members have completed many community service projects for people and organizations that have suffered a loss due to a personal tragedy or disability. Shortly after the hurricane, the NARI office was contacted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which was planning to send the family on a vacation, but could not help them with their home. According to NYC/ LI NARI Chairman Bob Didier, “the family was all set to go to Florida for Steven’s Wish, then Sandy hit—it was devastating for them—we really wanted to help this family out. The house was destroyed. We could tell by just looking at the destruction that the entire home had to be rebuilt.” Within days of receiving this call, a group of NARI members, led by Bob Didier of Irwin Contracting and Patrick Bentivegna, CR, of Benco Construction, put together a plan to rebuild the Heckman's home at no cost to them. After the story was aired on a local TV station, companies from all over New York wanted to help. Soon donations of building materials and volunteers for labor and sub contractoring were pouring into the NARI office and work was started in the first week of December. 18

Additional Bedroom Added To Help Heal

As a surprise for the family, the interior of the house was re-worked to allow for a third bedroom for Steven. Giving Steven his own bedroom to recover and heal was extremely important to everyone. The addition of a third bedroom was not the only surprise for the family! When they opened the door to their home for the first time, they walked into a completely furnished home, thanks to the tremendous generosity of Bob’s Furniture Stores. “The family was very grateful and thankful. It was mostly a surprise—the family only saw the home from the outside, so they didn’t know what the inside looked like,” Pat Bentivegna said. NARI member and Interior Designer Donna Conlon selected the home’s furniture, color scheme and décor—pulling the entire vision together. Additionally, in the backyard, Steven and his two sisters will be able to safely play together in their newly fenced-in yard, complete with a jungle gym,

thanks to the extreme kindness of PJ Mechanical. “We didn’t want to just rebuild a house, we wanted to give this special family back a home,” said Bob Didier. “A warm, safe and secure home that Steven can recover in.” There were more than 35 volunteer companies involved in the project. John Hogan, NYC/LI NARI president, says it is wonderful to see how many volunteers came forward to make this project a success. “Almost all of the work was done by volunteers. The more publicity and press we get on these types of projects, the more we can do—more projects like this— and make a difference in people’s lives,” he says. According to John Hogan of Mid-State Lumber, this is a perfect example of what is so wonderful about the NARI organization. “We are all professionals. And, when someone is in need, we forget about the competition of the business and come together to help others. NARI is a great organization to be involved in.”

indows can increase your heating bill between 10 percent to 25 percent by allowing heat to escape, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Never has it been more important to make sure your windows and doors aren’t letting money, as well as hot or cold air, out. When shopping for energy-efficient windows and doors, there are several types of ratings, technologies and window/door types that can save your wallet and the environment. Looking at ratings, purchasing treated windows, carefully selecting window and door styles, and choosing the right materials can increase energy savings through the years. ENERGY STAR: Your Guide to Efficiency

ENERGY STAR is the governmental certification program that designates a product as meeting or going above U.S. Environmental Protection Agency energy efficiency guidelines. Certified products will have a label designating what regions the product is appropriate for, as well as performance rates given by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC), such as the U-Factor, the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, Visible Transmittance and Air Leakage: The U-Factor: measures heat transfer through a window; Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): tells how much solar heat is absorbed by the product in proportion to the amount of solar radiation; Visible Transmittance: measures the amount of light transmitted; and Air Leakage: a measurement of heat that passes through cracks in the window’s construction. All of these are important when assessing a window and door for energy efficiency, since any transfer of air or heat into the home can raise energy costs to cool or heat the house. All of these terms come into play when looking at glazing, tinting, styles, frames, insulation and chemical treatments. Andrew Murphy of Pella Windows and Doors in New York recommends asking three important questions when looking for windows. First, does it pass the ENERGY STAR requirements? Second, does the measurement cover the whole glass? (Some will measure the middle.) Third, does it have the NRFC stamp on it?

Low E

Low E (or low Emissivity) glass is frequently recommended as a major component in saving energy through better windows and doors. Low E glass is treated with a coating of clear metallic oxide, allowing for heat to be reflected back into the home in winter and away from the home in summer. The metallic coating will help lower the U-Factor of the window; a high U-Factor signifies the quicker flow of heat through the window and a low U-Factor means slow rate of heat flow, translating to better insulation. Naturally, southern climates will want the lowest U-Factor. Certain brands, such as Marvin, will sell several types of Low E glass that are better for certain types of ENERGY STAR designated climate zones. Multiple Glass Panes

A popular way to increase energy efficiency is to also have multiple panes of glass in a window. “Incorporating triple-glazed insulated glass packages over double-glazed glass improves the energy efficiency of both windows and doors,” said George Efthymiou of Royal Windows and Doors in Bay Shore, NY. Having three panes of glass will create multiple layers of air pockets that will protect you from heat or cold transfer. Some styles can even fit shades between them for a sleeker look. Warm Edge Technology, referring to the type of material used to separate the panes of glass (called a spacer), can be applied here to stop heat or cold transfer. Instead of using the more traditional aluminum spacers like in the past, the metal may be wrapped in rubber to cut back on conductivity, helping with insulation. Some metal spacers are replaced altogether with foam, such as in the Super Spacer™ warm edge space system.

Gas and Tinting Treatments

Inserting inert gasses between windowpanes is another popular method of increasing window insulation. Argon is the primary gas used, sometimes with Krypton and air mixed in. Argon is denser than air, so it will act as an invisible insulator against the heat and cold. Glass tinting is another option to reduce energy lost through windows. Tinted windows, usually with a bronze or grey coloring to it, will reduce the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, keeping your home cooler in the summer. Murphy advises that argon is the best gas, while krypton not as effective. Also, he says, “you need a good seal on it or all that gas will seep out and you’ll be left with nothing in a year.” Framing Considerations

Frames also come into play when trying to save energy. Multi-chamber framing materials with air pockets are the best frames to look for. Foam injections in multiple air pockets can also help add insulation to the home. Often cited as being overlooked, weatherstripping in an efficient method of keeping out undesired heat or cold. type of insulating material is used to form a seal around the sash of the window or around the openings of the door. The installation of the window itself must be taken into consideration to avoid letting in heat or creating drafts. The window frame and sash should fit snuggly. Locking systems can create a better seal. A three-point lock can help a door seal in place, as well as creating a tighter seal in a frame. Materials

Vinyl and fiberglass are the best options for window and door materials when energy efficiency is a concern. They will not conduct heat and cold from the outside the way metal can. Murphy commented that “you cannot get a door that’s more energy efficient” than a fiberglass door exterior. George Efthymiou also supports fiberglass doors: “The most energy efficient doors on the market are made out of fiberglass and they are insulated with polyurethane insulation... If the door will incorporate glass, the smaller the glass unit the more efficient the door… Top name brands for these fiberglass doors are Thermatru on the national scene and Royal Windows and Doors for the local Long Island, NY, market.” Murphy also said that vinyl window frames are good, but you do not want vinyl for your entry door. “Vinyl gained popularity because the material does not transfer heat and cold (unlike metal windows and patio doors) and because of its ability to be extruded with insulating chambers (unlike wood windows),” said Dana Schindler of Alside Supply in Old Bethpage, NY. “The chambers, located in the frame and sash, can also have insulation added to improve performance— especially ideal for northern climates. In addition, unlike other materials, vinyl can be fusion-welded at the corners preventing air infiltration.” Styles

Single-hung and double-hung windows generally still remain the most popular types of windows. However, “the most energy efficient window you can buy from Royal Windows and Doors is the Casement window, or crank out as it is otherwise known,” said Efthymiou. “The reason for this is because it is the window with the lowest air infiltration.” For doors, sliding patio doors with Low E options remain a good bet. Exterior, swinging fiberglass doors are popular. However, another option is steel swing door units that have polyurethane foam cores and Low E windows. The Three Big Players: Andersen, Marvin and Pella

The three largest window and door manufacturers, Andersen, Marvin, and Pella, all offer their own lines of some of the most energy-efficient windows and doors on the market. Andersen Windows and Doors covers the three main considerations for buying energy-efficient windows: treated glass, the right materials and weather stripping. Andersen offers a line of High Performance™ Low-E4® Glass, offering greater control of temperatures within the house. Their High Performance™ Low-E4® Smartsun Glass keeps out 95 percent of UV rays and their High Performance™ Low-E4® Sun Glass keeps out the heat in southern climates. For a window that won’t warp and create drafts, 24

has a weather tight seal, and blocks the heat or cold, consumers may want to look into Andersen’s Fibrex®, a window material made out of 40 percent wood fiber and 60 percent PVC by weight. Andersen also keeps a careful eye on weather stripping, and has created the Stormwatch® protection system to hold up against hurricanes. Marvin offers a range of highly customizable windows. Homeowners looking for a focus on energy efficiency can pull from a number of options for their windows. Marvin offers Dual-Pane and Tripane options to increase insulation. They also have several levels of Low-E coatings to either block or allow heat transfer depending on the situation. LoE-180® is great for Northern climates that require the sun’s rays to pass through, but no heat loss to the outside. LoE2-272® has a double coating to reflect heat back into the house during winter and keep out heat in the summer, but is still not recommended for Southern climates. LoE3-366® has three metallic coatings that keep out the most heat, great for Southern climates. Marvin also offers windows with argon for more insulation. Consumers can also choose to have an energy panel installed, select a removable glass and screen panel option, and choose the XL Edge™ Spacer to insulate the edges of the glass. Those looking for fiberglass windows should look at the Integrity® line from Marvin, or the Infinity® line from Marvin for replacement windows and patio doors. For energy-efficient windows, Murphy recommends the Pella Designer Series windows with panes of glass that have blinds and shades between the triple-pane glass, boasting up to 74 percent more energy efficiency than a single-pane wood window. They are also tested to help prevent drafts. The Designer Series comes with InsulShield® Advanced Low-E triple-pane glass and is coated in EnduraGuard® wood protection to resist degradation of the wood. For those looking to avoid wood windows, Pella has a line of fiberglass windows (Impervia®) and two vinyl lines (350 Series and Encompass by Pella®). For doors, Murphy suggests consumers will want to look for the Pella Architect Series® entry doors, a line of durable fiberglass doors that offer superior protection from drafts and look like natural wood. The Importance of Getting Good Advice I

am often asked where to go, or who to listen to for answers when it comes to making major decisions regarding people’s homes. Some of the questions we grapple with are whether to stay where we are or to move. When our homes no longer satisfy our needs or those of our families, we are next faced with a host of decisions surrounding finding another home or remodeling the home we are in. The decision to remodel or renovate your home then leads to other questions and choices. Key among your decisions is choosing the right people to listen to. Some of the areas that must be addressed include the type and extent of your renovation and the selection of the professionals that you will work with. I have heard of so many people struggling to get the right answers and sometimes simply getting advice from the wrong sources. Often those sources are well-meaning friends and just as often the advice is coming from the Internet. As most of us realize, we have become a society of people who rely on Google for our answers. As beneficial as the Internet can be, it is not without its liabilities. Just like it is important to know that you are getting the right answers from the people you go to, it is equally important to ensure that the advice you listen to from the Internet is sound. With regard to the Internet, the simple answer is to verify the information with a professional who knows and understands the issues you are dealing with. Over the years I have heard so many stories of disaster and near-disaster resulting from people listening to and taking advice from the wrong people or the wrong sources. Although you will want to learn from others and get different viewpoints in making your decisions, it is important to guard against situations of the blind leading the blind. As we all realize, we sometimes find we actually gain some real nuggets of wisdom from listening to others. So what is the difference, and when do you know that you are getting help instead of more confusion regarding your situation? There are as many ways that you can be helped by others as there are ways that you can be hurt. Of course we could reverse that statement and focus on the ways you can be hurt. But instead let’s look at the important elements needed in seeking help. Avoid Asking Too Many People

One of the frustrating things I often see is the person who asks everyone for their opinion. This can be dangerous for a number of reasons. 26

The biggest problem with asking too many people is that most of them will not be qualified to give you sound advice. Part of this “disqualification” is that they most likely don’t have all the facts, or they don’t have the necessary experience in the area, or they don’t have the time and attention to put into helping you with your questions. Part of not having the experience is that these individuals may be very fixed into their way of thinking about something and quite frankly either can’t or won’t look at the big picture. Although your family, friends and neighbors usually mean well, they are often not equipped to assist in certain decisions. Even though everyone has their own ideas or opinions about certain subjects, they usually don’t have all the facts, knowledge or experience needed for sound decision-making. Although this is true in a lot of areas of life, it is especially true when it involves any decisions or plans requiring professional expertise. We have all heard of the armchair attorney, accountant or doctor, but too many of us ignore the importance of seeking professional advice when it comes to home improvement. Unless you are dealing with a professional in the area, it is rare to find someone who will have the necessary time or energy to put into answering your questions and helping you solve your problems. As a result you will most likely get an offhand answer or opinion. That is not to say that the advisor is trying to hurt you—most likely they aren’t—but keep in mind that you probably could have come up with the same answer yourself. When it comes to decisions regarding the design or construction of our home, we are safer to use the expertise and experience of a professional, rather than going to a well-meaning, but uninformed

Question The Bidder: The Low And High

friend. When it comes to trying something new, most of your friends or other casual advisors won’t really know how it will work, so they will probably advise you to not go ahead. This unfortunately limits creativity and progress. And of course, you will never know if the new idea would have worked Be Sure You Give All The Information

When it comes to getting professional advice, it is critical that you let your advisor know all the facts of the situation; otherwise even the professional might lead you astray. Of course, anyone who is a real professional will strive to get all the relevant data before giving their opinion. Unfortunately I have seen too many cases of that not happening. For example, if someone needs a new lawn installed to make their house more saleable, it is important to give the landscaper the information about the impending sale. This enables him to focus on the goal of selling the house, rather than establishing an elaborate landscape. In general, you will get the best advice from the professionals you speak with by giving all the information. Whether that professional is a landscaper as in the example above, or an architect, builder, remodeler or even financial advisor, these professionals need all the information to help you. Unfortunately, giving incomplete or inaccurate information will result in an incomplete proposal and an inaccurate price estimate. Don’t Be Focused Only On Price

The following example illustrates how you can get a much better product by giving enough information to the professionals you deal with. I recently spoke with someone who just purchased a house and wanted built-in book shelves. They told me: “I told the person what I wanted and asked her for a bid in three different ways. She gave them. Then she went over how many books I could get with each of the different pricing models. We also discussed options we could add—like color for the room, increasing the size of the shelves so they won’t bow from the weight of the books, making the unit flexible so it could be used as an entertainment center, etc. If I had just focused on price, I would have had a white bookshelf with standard ¾” shelves which may have bowed and wouldn’t have flexibility.” All too often people end up choosing the “low bidder” and are usually sorry afterwards. Unfortunately, there are just too many instances of unprofessional contractors giving low-ball pricing and then cutting corners to make up the difference. I am often told by my clients that they can’t understand how others can price their projects so low. Usually what we 28

We have often heard the advice of going for the lowest bidder, as in the recent case of a homeowner’s financial advisor recommending they go with the low bidder. The advisor’s reasoning was that they could do the project over if they weren’t happy with the outcome. Unfortunately this advisor did not consider all the other ramifications and potential issues that could and probably would arise based on that decision. As we all know that is a recipe for disaster and a prime example of not looking at all the facts. Although it is common to question and possibly distrust the professional with a high bid, we too often forget to find out why a low bid is so low. I have seen too many cases of people being seriously hurt by going with the lowest price for their renovation. Often what I hear is that people automatically stop listening to the remodeler who presents the higher-priced proposal. This can be and usually is a big mistake. By continuing to discuss your project with both remodelers, you may find out that your project was mis-interpreted by one or both of them. Often there are vast differences in the proposals. In the case of the low-bidder, there may be costly omissions, which will get added in as additions or change orders. In the case of the high-bidder, it may be that the remodeler included high-end, optional features that can be eliminated. Get The Right Professional For The Right Job

The various professionals who can and will assist us in improving our homes include architects, designers, builders, remodelers and landscape professionals. To ensure that the systems in our homes are kept safe and in good condition there are many service professionals including plumbing, heating and HVAC specialists, electricians, and those who service our appliances and any other systems we have in our homes. Another aspect of choosing a professional to work with is to understand the differences in professionals. Although someone may be a professional building framer, that does not mean they are qualified as an electrician. Someone who is an excellent handyman will most likely not be qualified to do a remodeling project or build a house. I recommend you keep those differences in mind when selecting the professionals to listen to and to work with. Ultimately, It Is Your Decision

Even though it is important that we ultimately make our own decisions, we all recognize that there will be times that we may want to seek outside help. In doing so, there will often be conflicting opinions, so it will be important that you make sure all the data is available to anyone you consult and that you ultimately make your own decisions. When it comes to prospective clients seeking advice, the best you can do for them is to ensure that their advisers are also fully informed. Beautiful Colonial Adds Space Indoor & Out By Sharon Glorioso

This family wanted to add a master suite, a bigger kitchen and an outdoor addition—and Tarr’s Home Improvements did an excellent job.

hen Vicky and Nick Vayias bought this New Hyde Park, NY, colonial, three-bedroom, one and one-half bathroom home about 12 years ago, they weren’t sure at the time if they would stay in the home long-term, or just stay for several years to raise their children. Now, with their two sons 12- and 11-years old, they wanted more space, an updated master suite with their own bathroom, a larger kitchen, an outdoor deck area, and additional space for their boys to hang out. “When we first decided that we wanted and needed more space, we started to look around the area at other homes and considered moving. But we didn’t really like any of the homes that we saw, so we decided that we’d be better off staying where we were and remodeling,” Vicky says. NARI NYC/LI • www.nari-ny.org

Finding the Right Remodeler

When we concluded that we’d be better off remodeling instead of moving, we started researching area remodeling companies. “We had some friends that had recently added a porch on their home, and we loved it—so we asked who they had used,” Vicky says. They had worked with Tarr’s Home Improvements, Inc. in Franklin Square, NY, and their friends highly recommended them. After doing their research they ended up interviewing three companies to do their project. “We received such a great recommendation about Tarr’s, and we just felt comfortable with Howard Tarr, CR, [Owner of Tarr’s Home Improvements, Inc.] so we ultimately decided to go with them. Howard had some great ideas about the project, and we just felt comfortable with them,” Vicky said. According to Howard, the existing home had some awkward secondlevel bedrooms, and the downstairs kitchen was tiny, and the home also included a den that the family didn’t use often. “They wanted a much bigger kitchen with an open-concept design—we knew we could help them achieve the home they wanted,” Howard says. Bigger Bedrooms

Initially we knew that we wanted more space on the upper level. “The bedrooms were small. We wanted them to be bigger and we wanted a master suite with a bathroom,” Vicky said. They also wanted a more open-concept kitchen and a dining room on the first level. “The existing kitchen was much smaller and closed off,” Vicky said. Tarr’s created a much bigger kitchen, which includes a family room right next to it with a very open area, which is easy to entertain in, and even has a computer area where the kids can do homework and the family can pay bills, etc. Tarr’s also renovated and relocated the half bathroom on the first level, which used to be in an existing closet area. “I was happy to get that closet space back,” Vicky says. The half bathroom now is off of a side entrance that includes a mudroom. Outdoor Covered Deck

Off of the family room, Tarr’s added an outdoor covered deck with access through French doors from the new dining room. “It’s totally open out there, but it also has a portico with a covered area, which includes lights and a ceiling fan; we love it,” Vicky said. The family will be able to have a television out there if they wish, and it is almost like an additional family room and overlooks the backyard. Tarr’s also built out the basement so it now includes a play area for the kids, a workout room and laundry room. The home now has four bedrooms and two and one-half bathrooms, and has about 2,500 square feet of living area plus 1,000 finished square feet in the basement and a one-car garage. Staying Within Budget

Overall, Vicky says that Tarr’s did a great job at staying within their budget. “They were great to work with, and we are very happy with the work they did. Howard had some great ideas for the project; he gave me recommendations of where to look for design ideas and we have recommended them to our friends. The family, who didn’t live in the home during construction, would stop in and check out the progress throughout the six-month project. “Howard was great about updating us on the status of the project, and I would go there almost every day to check things out,” Vicky said. “They were very open to me asking questions and telling them my ideas; I really appreciated that.” Advice to Homeowners Photographs Courtesy of: Tarr’s Home Improvements, Inc.

NY/LI Area Combating Mold: A Serious Problem

he city is cracking down on the mold that has spread in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently announced. Bloomberg unveiled a $15 million program that will clean up 2,000 homes that sprouted mold after being inundated with Sandy’s floodwaters. He also announced dozens of free training sessions for the public on how to safely remove the fungus. “Mold remains a challenge that many residents are confronting,” Bloomberg said in a statement according to DNAinfo.com. “Thanks to generous donations from people around the country and the world, the Mayor’s Fund, the Red Cross and the Robin Hood Foundation have teamed up to sponsor a $15 million mold-cleanup effort that will help thousands of families.” These efforts came after criticism that the city has not done enough to combat the mold that is growing in thousands of storm-damaged homes. But some are worried that the new cleanup plan won’t be enough—and they are probably correct.

Post Hurricane Sandy Clean-up Tips

After the flood, you may have vacuumed up all the water, but what about all the lingering effects? According to Kevin Wrynn, CR, Owner of Kevin Wrynn Carpentry Inc., the building materials in your home act like a sponge, they wick up the water and retain it. Commercial dehumidification is mandatory. According to Kevin: There is a five-step process to drying a home after a flood: 1. The removal of all wet or damp building materials including carpet, padding, sections of the wallboard, molding, insulation down to subfloor; 2. The application of a biocide and thorough cleansing of all affected areas (with scrub brush, including floor joists); 3. An additional application of anti-microbial agent for long-lasting protection; 4. Dry out space with commercial dehumidification units and air movers (to return your home to proper humidity levels); and 5. Verify humidity levels in all remaining building materials with moisture meter. 34

Done properly, the end product is a dry, odor-free area. Only then can the restoration process begin. According to Art Morales, with Enviro-Test, Inc., in Amityville, NY, he has worked on several projects recently dealing with mold problems. “During the extensive air sampling we have performed for pre-mold remediation and post-mold remediation projects, we have come across some consistent patterns in terms of success and failure,” Art says. Examples of Failure:

Art says that they have been at several projects where they were told the “job is complete.” Unfortunately, we have been relaying bad news for most projects due to the fact that not all areas that were affected by water infiltration were addressed. That is a big problem, he says, and it needs to be addressed. Unlike lead-based paint and asbestos, each of which will do no harm if they are intact and not undergoing any disturbance (friction, impact, and alteration), mold must be 100 percent eliminated, not 70 percent, 80 percent or 90 percent. “Removing the obvious wet building materials such as sheetrock, insulation, carpeting and flooring is common sense. However, neglecting to thoroughly address items that remain (framing, concrete, sub-flooring, furniture and household belongings) or other areas (crawl spaces, closets and wall cavities) will create unwanted mold issues in the near future. Mold will grow between finish flooring and sub-flooring especially if paper or vapor barriers are present,” Art says.

Additionally, installing new material (sheetrock and insulation) against wet framing or concrete will not produce long-term favorable results. Cleaning and drying those retained components is one of the most important steps to a successful mold remediation project, Art says.

Mold: A Serious Problem

Kevin, who has been in the remodeling industry for over 25 years, has recently joined forces with a restoration contractor, responding to water, fire and storm damages. Additionally, both Kevin and Art are active members of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), and they have recently worked together on several tough mold projects. “Homeowners and area residents have to make a point to not make this situation the remodeling industry’s Sept. 11 clean up,” Kevin says. “I have read and followed work scopes written by certified industrial hygienists, and Hurricane Sandy has put a combination of contaminants into people’s homes,” he says. “Let’s say it—this is a level three contamination; bay water, fecal matter, fuel, oil, etc.”

Kevin says that the window of opportunity for cleaning up clear water spills before mold growth is 48 hours. “We are far past this window, so homeowners need to take this problem seriously and clean their homes soon before the problems get even worse than they already are.” Use The Correct Equipment

Additionally, Art says that using the proper equipment cannot be overlooked. Essential items must include, but not be limited to, HEPA vacuums, negative air machines, air scrubbers, dehumidifiers, and commercial blowers/dryers. Examples of Success Tips:

• Negative air (keeps mold infested air in work space); • All wet material/building components removed and disposed of; • Wet boxes and newspapers disposed of; • Clothing and draperies laundered and stored; • HEPA vacuum of visible mold; • HEPA debris cleanup during and after each workday; • Retained furniture, plastic containers, and the like, cleaned and wrapped in plastic; • All spaces/rooms that were affected are addressed; • Framing, concrete sub-flooring, cleaned (scrubbed) and efficiently dried; • Clean areas (ex: 2nd floor) sealed off from the work areas; • Dehumidifiers (keeps excess moisture in check); and • Air scrubbers prior to clearance. Protect Your Home and Yourself

The common theme on many jobs is elevated levels of personal protection. Kevin gives several tips for his employees and any worker under him that must be adhered to: 1. Respirators: (Not dust masks) With the P100 cartridges for airborne particulates. If spraying bleach or any other chemicals, use the same respirator mask, but change the filter to the carbon, vapor and particulate cartridge.

In all of these incidents, the clearance air sampling results were not good; unhappy client, unhappy contractor.

2. Gloves: Disposable latex gloves, with yellow dishwashing gloves for any chemicals or cleaning. For rip outs, latex gloves with work gloves on top. (Work gloves should be cleaned afterwards, or thrown out.) 3. Hand Sanitizer: Every time you touch something, before coffee breaks, lunch, snacks, water and before going home. 4. Tyvek Suits: We are wearing them for rip outs and biocide washing. 5. Cross Contamination: We all have had the experience of working with tar. At the end of the day everything is covered in little globs of the stuff, we have to wash every tool we used that day in gas or wd40. Remember to apply the same principle here; everything you touch is contaminated. Here’s what you can do: wipe down and disinfect all of your tools with 20/80 bleach to water with a little detergent. Also, disinfect your work boots, especially if you wear them inside your home. Wipe the interior of your vehicles, dashboard, steering wheel and anything you have touched with sanitizing wipes. Also, Kevin says that it is a good idea to have a safety meeting. “Get all of your employees and your sub-contractors on board. We have to do this work. Let’s be safe about it. Work smart, and work safe.”

ur client just purchased two apartments and the renovation consisted of creating their dream home by combining them into one. Now, with a dream home comes the “dream” master bathroom. A lot of time was spent deciding the new floor plan for the apartment, to make sure everything was accounted for. To achieve the new master bathroom and full custom walk-in closet: two existing bathrooms, a laundry room and a kitchen needed to be removed. On paper it all looked good, but the issue was: how do we make the plumbing work in the new layout? Relocating plumbing fixtures in a residential building is not the easiest due to the fact that you cannot chop the concrete slab to run new drain lines. We decided to use a wallhung toilet with an in-wall carrier—that way the drain lines were running inside the wall. All of the other existing fixtures needed to be capped off and all venting needed to be relocated to connect to the main vent stack. Once we confirmed that all plumbing would work to our new layout, the design began. We were looking for elegance in simplicity... The overall bathroom color is white. White ceilings, white walls, white tiles and then just a “High Gloss Finish” plum color vanity accent wall. The double vanity is perfect for the mornings getting ready.

The shower has a multi-function shower body and includes a 15” rain head, a hand held and two body sprays. Each can be used individually or simultaneously for the ultimate shower experience. The shower seat is made from 1 1/4 white carrara marble with no visible leg supports to make a floating seat. The niche was carved into the wall for shampoo and soap. We improved the lighting by using Low Voltage Recessed Lights throughout and added one in the shower as well. The lights are on three separate zones with dimmers. For the cold winter days, we added an electric heated floor to keep the feet warm. Speakers were installed in the ceiling, which are connected with the Audio/ Visual throughout the apartment.

Our client had a tight budget of $40,000.00 and needed the following. • More storage and counter space. • Safer entrance to and from stairway in right of photo. • Updated look in an updated contemporary style. • Better lighting for evenings and night time. • Larger more open kitchen with eating area. • Easy to care for floor and counters with larger sink. Before

he new owners of this “high ranch” loved the size of the house and a lot of its features. The only thing they hated was the front. They hated the large stoop that seemed to take up so much space in the front yard. Also, the house had a very flat facade with no dimension to it. The siding and brick were very outdated and it needed new windows and a front door. Construction started by demolition of the complete front and removing the front door and concrete stoop. To lower the front door, the foundation had to be cut. A new hallway was built directly to the first floor and a full flight of stairs was installed to the upper level. All of the windows were replaced with energy-efficient Andersen windows. A new insulated steel front door was installeded with side lights. The biggest transformation of the house was the addition of a new front covered porch, made out of low-maintenance decking material, pressure-treated framing and vinyl rails and posts. Beautiful cultured stone covered the bottom of the deck as well as the lower half of the house. The entire front of the house has new cedar shake style vinyl siding.

The ceiling of the porch has vented beaded soffit material with recessed lights. The entire house received a new 40-year roof coordination with the colors of the siding and the stone. The final touches of any job are what make the house perfect. We cut the arch over the entry way out of a 4x8 sheet of Azek so there would be no seams. We also installed Azek four-inch trim around all of the windows and doors. The garage door received a larger crown on top with a decorative keystone. The owners are thrilled with their “new home” and the idea that it was built with all low-maintenance materials for many years of life. Remodeled By

he homeowner needed to update their home. Siding and roofing needed replacing. They needed a new kitchen and wanted a “more open” feel to their home. They also needed an outdoor entertaining area. We extended the back of the house for the kitchen and master suite. One major challenge was aligning the floors and old framing with new. Another was the massive headers to create a wide open space from the front to the back of the house. The homeowner was very energy conscious so we used energy efficient building material and practices. We used Zip wall and roof systems for air sealing. We used closed cell spray foam in the exterior plumbing wall, the floor of the bedroom and above the garage. We also used a rear cantilever system for the master bedroom and bath. Almost every light fixture in the home was LED. We were happy to use green building products to meet the needs of the homeowners.

he family who purchased this once, modern-style summer home was looking for classic Hampton’s style, and a place worthy of accommodating visiting family and friends. The home was completely transformed from contemporary to classic in a beautiful gambrel style. To begin, the house was completely demolished, leaving only the original garage to work off of. Special care was needed to build upon the remaining structure, because it featured entirely rounded corners, a design element not intended for the new design. The exterior was covered with cedar shingles to obtain the quintessential Hamptons facade, but innovative touches such as the Aztek white trim, as opposed to painted wood, allow the homeowners to enjoy a maintenance-free exterior, which will look as brilliant as the day it was constructed for many years to come. the additional benefit of not providing a home to any unwanted pests. On the interior, the clients wanted a less traditional appearance, incorporating sleek accents for a clean, up-todate look. First, foam insulation was used to increase the overall “R” value of the house. Custom MDF bead board then covered many of the interior walls, and reclaimed barn beams were painstakingly installed in the ceiling. For the floors, reclaimed hardwood seemed the perfect touch to complete the layout. To incorporate a sleek theme throughout, glass tiles were fashioned to the fireplace, and stainless steel countertops were set in the bathrooms. The dining room was painted from top to bottom with a deep blue, high gloss finish, which left absolutely no room for imperfections. The scrupulous process of smoothing the surfaces to almost glass-like appearances yielded a stunning room, which is absolutely unique to this home. To tie it all together, custom cabinetry and custom woodworking was installed throughout. Above and beyond the clients’ basic aspirations, there was one element that held the most importance. A hanging chandelier from the 1950s, which belonged to the clients’ father needed to be updated to fit the theme of the house, and showcased for both sentimental value and aesthetic appeal. To take the fixture into the 21st century, it was completely rewired and restored to full working condition, and sprayed a cool white. It is now the focal point of this magnificent transformation. The completed project allowed this family to have a beautiful summer home to share with their loved ones, and a place that is truly unique and tailored specifically to them.
