Certified Experts PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS SET PROFESSIONAL BUILDERS AND REMODELERS APART When choosing a builder or remodeler, you want someone with the knowledge and expertise to do the job right. That’s why the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the Home Builders Associations (HBAs) of Raleigh-Wake County and Durham, Orange & Chatham Counties offer professional designations that help consumers identify builders and remodelers who have committed themselves to continually improving their skills and bettering their profession. CERTIFIED AGING-IN-PLACE SPECIALIST (CAPS) The NAHB has joined forces with AARP and several experienced remodelers to develop the Certified Aging-inPlace Specialist (CAPS) certification. Designees are trained to understand and respond to the unique needs of older home owners. CERTIFIED GRADUATE REMODELER (CGR) The Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) designation recognizes remodeling professionals who have a proven track record of success. You can count on remodelers who have the CGR designation to show a high level of professionalism and credibility, and those who earn it can be considered industry leaders. GRADUATE MASTER REMODELER (GMR) The Graduate Master Remodeler (GMR) designation allows Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) to attain further recognition for educational excellence and longevity in the remodeling industry. Qualifications include 15 years of remodeling experience.

CERTIFIED GREEN PROFESSIONAL (CGP) The Certified Green Professional designation recognizes builders, remodelers and other industry professionals who incorporate green building principles into homes without driving up the cost of construction. Graduate Master Builder (GMB) The ultimate symbol of the building professional, the Graduate Master Builder (GMB) designation is for experienced veterans only. Before beginning the GMB designation process, you must have the CGB designation, the CGR designation, or the CGA designation with five years of building experience, or ten years of building experience and have completed three CGB/CGR/CGA courses. GMB courses are more advanced with in-depth instruction geared for experienced building professionals. Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) CGB is an exclusive professional designation designed to emphasize business and project management skills. Candidates must have: Two years of building experience by graduation; Completion of the Builder Assessment Review (BAR); Be a “builder” according to the following criteria: primary executive/owner of a company, superintendent or lead carpenter, or construction executive personnel/ employee who has built a minimum of one dwelling in the past 24 months.

LG Electronics LG’s current line of smart technology consists of the THINQ Technology line. “With LG’s new line of appliances called Smart THINQ, LG is striving to make life ‘good’ for the consumer with its Wi-Fi connected appliances,” said Dave VanderWaal, director of brand marketing, home appliances, of LG Electronics USA. “We have incorporated technologies that make household tasks easier, quicker and more efficient, allowing families to spend less time on chores and more time together.” PhotographY Courtesy of: GE

THINQ Technology consists of five features: Smart Grid, Smart Diagnosis, Smart Access, Smart Adapt and Food Management: Smart Grid: a meter on the home’s appliances to make sure they are using the smallest amount of energy with the least expensive rates; Smart Diagnosis: customers can resolve issues with their appliances quickly and efficiently. The appliance will alert the consumer on their smartphone or tablet for small issues like a door left open or an off-balance washing machine. For large issues, customers can call a service line and the technician will instruct them to press a sequence of buttons to diagnose the problem, leading to faster resolution; Smart Access: allows customers to monitor their appliances remotely. Customers can keep track of their washing cycle or set the refrigerator temperature using a smartphone or tablet; Smart Adapt: allows customers to download updates for their appliances using a WiFi connection. Customers can access recipes and advanced washing cycles without having to purchase a new product; and Food Management: allows customers to check stock and expiration dates of their food by dragging and dropping icons on an LCD screen. According to VanderWaal, “Regarding additional connectivity options, the next generation line will include Near Field

Communication (NFC) technology. This technology simplifies the connection between a consumer’s smartphone and the appliance, so you can easily register and share information between the devices. For example, if a consumer selects a recipe via the smartphone app, but wants it to appear on the refrigerator, it only requires a tap.”

Whirlpool Whirlpool employs 6th Sense Live™ technology in their smart appliances. Bob Bergeth, General Manager Builder Sales of Whirlpool Corporation, said, “The 6th Sense Live platform allows homeowners to remotely connect to their home’s refrigerator, dishwasher and laundry pair. From that, they can track energy consumption and monitor and operate appliances from their computers and mobile devices, be it a tablet or smartphone. This connectivity makes appliances with 6th Sense Live Technology ideal for homeowners who want greater flexibility and control of home energy consumption.” Customers can also activate specific settings away from home with the Vacation Assistant feature. Smart Nudges and Alerts can tell the customer how the product is functioning. Specifically, alerts can also notify customers when a water filter needs changing, a washing load ends and needs a fan turned on to keep it fresh or what cycle the dishwasher is on, just to name a few notifications.

Sub-Zero and Wolf Sub-Zero and Wolf smart appliances feature the Smart Appliance App and Smart Appliance Module to integrate with the Control4® wireless home control system. For instance, the system “can notify parents when the fridge is open by sending messages if it’s open longer than 90 seconds, say. There are messages to know when to change a fridge filter- email, texts, etc.,” said Paul Williams, vice president of security & communications products/ support services with Control4 Lights also can flash, music can play or a text message can be sent when internal sensors detect food is finished cooking. “Now instead of having to babysit, I can just take the meat out of the oven,” said Williams. The Smart Appliance App allows customers to receive notifications for instances like when the oven is done preheating or what the current oven temperature is. The app can also be set to lower the refrigerator’s energy consumption during daytime, set to an energy-saving vacation mode or set to increase ice before entertaining, to name a few features. General service requests can be sent via the Control4 System and customers can be notified when there is a problem with an appliance. Sub-Zero built-in refrigerator models and Wolf E wall ovens now come with aftermarket installation for the new Smart Appliance module, which will boost functionality of certain appliances when integrated with the Control4 system.

GE GE’s smart technologies focus on monitoring and controlling appliances for greater energy savings with the Brillion™ Whole-Home Energy Sensor. “We’ve leveled the playing field by providing a product that communicates a home’s continuous real-time energy consumption to consumers without a smart meter,” said William Paul, product manager, home energy, GE Appliances. “Our new Whole-Home Sensor connects to the consumer’s electrical panel and allows them to understand their energy consumption without waiting for their electricity provider to install a smart meter.” The device pulls data from the home’s large 240-volt applications like a panel box or pool pump to the Nucleus™ energy manager, which then sends the data to the customer’s smartphone or computer. GE also has the Brillion Smart Plugs, which can be plugged into 120-volt outlets to read energy usage through the 10

Nucleus energy manager. Also, Brillion thermostats allow customers to adjust their heating and cooling schedules remotely through their iPhone.

Local Appeal of Smart Appliances Since the technology is so new, smart appliances still attract a smaller segment of overall buyers in the market. Sellers liken them to hi-definition televisions, where eventually the technology will take off in homes as customers become more educated and prices become more accessible. Eventually the technology will become more ubiquitous, but it will take time. Christine Tingen, showroom sales manager of Ferguson Enterprises, Inc. in Raleigh, N.C., said, “Customers have become so accustomed to using their iPhones or Androids that touch screens have been well embraced in our market. Once they see that the appliance touch screens operate just like their phones, they are very comfortable with the technology and how easy it can be to prepare dinner!”

No matter where you are in the home remodeling process, it’s important that you set your expectations for your remodeled home, as well as for the professionals you are or will be working with. Although it’s best to lay out your needs, wants and goals before you get started, it’s never too late to clarify them. Even though you may prefer to sell your existing home rather than upgrade, that’s not always an option. Before you make a final decision on whether to sell and move, or remodel, it’s advisable to determine the availability of homes for sale. Recently, home prices have been rising and, in some cases, there is a shortage of homes for sale. Although there may be homes for sale in your area, there may not be enough homes with the features that you are looking for. Even if you do decide to buy another house, you may still choose to remodel. This is where setting your expectations comes in. Do Your Homework In setting your expectations there are a number of factors to look at. Most of these factors entail doing some homework. Depending on your needs and wants, this homework can be relatively simple and straight forward or much more complex. Just keep in mind that the more prepared you are, the better the outcome will be. As Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Your homework can and most likely will entail research on a number of aspects associated with your home itself. This research will include style and functionality, as well as many other elements associated with your remodeled home. As you find ideas that you like, you may identify some that you’ll want to avoid. Part of your homework should also include the selection of the remodeling professionals you choose to work with. Just as it’s important to know what you want for your remodeled home, it’s equally important to know what you want in your remodeler. To ensure a positive remodeling experience, it’s essential to verify the credentials and traits of potential designers and contractors. By choosing remodelers who are members of a professional association such as the Remodelers Councils of the Home Builders Association, you will increase your chances of having a successful project.

Your Budget Equally important to your pre-planning is determining your budget for your project. In addition to affordability issues, it’s important to formulate your wish list so that it falls within your comfort level. To not do so will set you up for frustration and disappointment. Although it’s not necessary, or advisable, for you to determine the detailed costs involved in your project, your remodeler will certainly need to know your budgetary constraints in order to create an appropriate proposal. Just as knowing the style and functionality you want is necessary, determining and sharing your budget with the professionals you choose to engage is important in preparing for your project.

Prioritize Even though you may not get everything you want, you can certainly end up with a wonderful project and home that you love. The key is to prioritize your needs and wants. For example, functionality may be more important to you than style. Perhaps the priorities may lie in the size of your remodel or possibly the details of the project. By creating and using a wish list of everything you and your family want for your remodeled home, you will have taken the first step in determining your priorities. Just as it’s important to share your goals with your remodeler, communicating your priorities is an essential element in preparing for your remodeling project.

Options Even if it’s not possible to get everything you want, there are often alternative choices and options to ensure that you will be happy with your remodeled home. As you do your research, keep in mind that there are many options that will satisfy your needs and wants. Although your first choice may not be within your reach, you can often find alternatives, which may end up being the best choice for you and your family. By having a clear idea of your goals for your newly remodeled home and sharing those goals and your vision, you’ll be closer to achieving your objectives. The remodeling professionals you choose to work with can and will assist you in selecting various options to ensure that you will achieve your goals.

Moving Forward By learning about the current market in your area, clarifying your expectations, researching and prioritizing your options, and determining your budget you will have taken the first necessary steps in creating a successful remodeling project.

This recently remodeled kitchen was part of a basement and a first- and second-floor remodel in this beautiful Georgian-Style Raleigh, N.C., home. George Bradley purchased this four-bedroom, three and one-half bathroom home in 2002, and at the time he knew that some updates would need to be made in the future. He began the upgrades by replacing some windows using a company that was owned by Kevin and Chris Frazier. He began talking with Kevin about some other projects that he would eventually like to have done—including remodeling the basement and the first and second floor of the 4,500 square-foot home. Kevin, along with Chris Frazier, owners of Horizon Renovations LLC and also Horizon Cabinetry, talked with George about future projects of the home and stayed in touch over the years. “When I would talk with Kevin about future projects that I wanted done, he seemed genuinely interested in the home and came up with some unique ideas. After working with the two of them, I knew they had great work ethics, and I knew that I would want to work with them in the future,” George said. “So when it came time to start another project, I knew right away that I would contact them at Horizon Renovations.” Had Remodeled in the Past Not new to the remodeling experience, in the past George had added a garage to the home. He used a different builder/remodeler for the project. “It was a completely different experience this time around with Horizon Renovations. Kevin and Chris were very attentive. It is clear that they take a lot of pride in their work.” Kevin would ask him questions such as: “Is this for the resale value, or a personal choice decision?” Also, on the garage remodel, “the workers tended to act like they were only doing the work for a paycheck—where Kevin’s company was totally different,” George said. “They took pride in the work and wanted it done right.” Open Floor Plan On the first floor, they were looking to have a more transitional open floor plan that integrated harmony throughout the living space. Another priority was to have a beautiful kitchen that the family could congregate in. The desire for the second floor was to add a new laundry room, as well as redesign their existing master suite. Horizon Renovation’s mission was to revitalize this space and modernize the federal colonial style home to have more traditional character and quality upgrades, Kevin says. In order to begin this project, The Bradleys were going to need somewhere else to dwell for the duration of this makeover. After consulting with Horizon Renovations, it was concluded that the best way to use space and money would be to move forward first on finishing the existing basement space. This would allow them a living area while work upstairs was being done. Not only was this allowing them to stay in their own home, but the money spent would be investing in their own property value, instead of renting elsewhere. “The idea of staying in our own home and gaining new living space, well, seemed like a ‘winwin’ situation to us,” George said.

Dream Kitchen According to George, his favorite part of the new home is definitely the kitchen. The kitchen makeover shown before with dark cabinets and wood accents was transformed with custom maple wood, crème glazed cabinetry. Details included concealed wine racks, dove tail drawer boxes, self-closing hardware and designed knife and silverware organizers. As a final touch to the kitchen, a 24-foot enclosed pantry with adjustable organization and wine chiller was added. “It turned out beautiful,” George says. “Whenever we have people over, everyone says that this is their dream kitchen.” In the master bedroom, Horizon closed off the single closet door that led to the master bath. It was relocated with double entry doors to lead to the new master bath suite and its redesigned custom walk-in closet. (Including closet organizers and grand floor-to-ceiling dressing mirror.) The bath suite includes custom cabinetry, designed and made by Horizon Cabinetry, and stone tile from Brazil. Deco-tile with crushed wine glass accents from California were used to emphasize detail around the new self-warming Jacuzzi tub and separate shower. Beautiful Woodwork Throughout In conclusion, Horizon installed Brazilian cherry flooring, built and installed an entertainment center, office furniture and an additional one-half bath. All of the cabinetry was designed and built, including millwork and wainscoting, by Horizon’s custom cabinet shop—Horizon Cabinetry. “I have been amazed at the transformation and ease of this large renovation project that Kevin, Chris and their team have provided,” George said. “Never have I seen such attention to detail and care for us, the homeowner. Ensuring us with comfort and most importantly professionalism like I never encountered from a company before.” Highly Recommends Horizon Renovations George did get a bid from another area remodeler when he first wanted to begin the project, but decided to go with Horizon Renovations. “Horizon’s bid was much more item-

The project came in at the quoted budget. “There were no surprises and Kevin kept me very informed every step of the way. Whenever we received an invoice, it was itemized and detailed. Luxurious Modern B This large master suite bathroom was completely remodeled and highlights granite countertops throughout, an air tub, with many other high-end upgrades. Dan and Nancy Blum purchased their brand-new beautiful four-bedroom, two- and one-half bathroom, 3,200 square-foot home 22 years ago in this Apex, N.C., suburb right outside Raleigh. It was a spec home in a new neighborhood development and it was perfect for their family of three and their daughter’s childhood home. Throughout the years they had done some upgrades to the home, but never paid much attention to the master bath—a major highlight of the home. Now, years later, they wanted to update the bathroom and modernize it to present-day luxuries. “We knew the master bath needed a facelift. We went to a local area home show to get some ideas and to meet some local remodeling companies to see what their ideas were and hopefully find someone that we were comfortable with,” says Nancy. 20

Meeting With Remodelers Some neighbors of theirs had also recently done some remodeling on their home and had given them some recommendations. “We went to the home show with an open mind to ideas—but were most interested in talking with professionals about what we wanted done and who we thought would be a good match for us to work with,” Nancy said. Catherine Dobbins, owner of Wake Remodeling in Apex, N.C., was also at the home show talking with prospective clients. “When I talked with Catherine, she just really listened to what we wanted and she had some very good ideas about what we could do with the large space,” Nancy said. “Some of the other remodelers that I talked with, I just knew it wouldn’t work. They would tell me their ideas and I felt that they weren’t really listening to what we wanted.”

Bathroom Makeover

Ultimately, the Blum’s met with several other remodeling companies and had them come up with plans for their master bathroom. Wake Remodeling, being one of the companies that they met with, seemed like a great fit and they decided to go with them. Luke and Catherine Dobbins, owners of Wake Remodeling, have extensive remodeling and design experience and were excited to work with the couple. “We didn’t have a clear vision of what we wanted. Luke and Catherine presented a lot of ideas to us and had some wonderful advice,” Dan said. “We didn’t have experience with remodeling and they [Wake Remodeling] seemed genuinely concerned that we would end up with something that we loved. Most importantly, Luke listened to our ideas, took notes, and really tried to get a sense of what we would be happy with. They were very customer orientated.” Beautiful Results Without changing the footprint of the master bathroom, the completed project resulted in a beautiful luxurious master suite that the Blum’s couldn’t be happier with.

Additionally, because of some problems throughout the neighborhood with leaks in their homes, Dan said that they had decided to replace all of the plumbing as well in order to prevent some possible future leaking problems. “The home had polybutylene pipes throughout, and the poly b connectors are notorious for failing,” said Luke. “We replaced all of the plumbing to ensure that there wouldn’t be any future problems with the new bathroom.” Custom Amenities Throughout Custom cabinets were installed throughout. Wake Remodeling assisted with the interior design and were more than happy to help pick out the gorgeous grey tiles and the glacier white granite countertops. “That was one thing that I was very appreciative of. Catherine and Luke offered to come to the stores and showrooms with us to help coordinate everything,” Nancy said. “I am a very vision-oriented person, so ‘seeing’ everything in person before it was installed really helped me make some decisions.”

An upgraded frameless shower glass enclosure—complete with a c-pull handle and robe hooks—compliment the separate shower. The shower also includes a seat, niches, and a granite shower curb. Not totally happy with their previous jet tub, the couple had them install an air tub with a granite tub deck and it even includes a wall-mounted flat screen for entertainment while relaxing. The entire bathroom has heated floor tiles throughout, which also continues into the spacious walk-in closet. A double sink counter and a separate vanity allows for a ton of space. Something unique in this bathroom is the custom barn door that was installed, which saves room when entering and leaving the area. “The door doesn’t waste any space as it opens, it looks attractive, and slides easily alongside the wall—making a seamless entry from the bedroom,” Dan says. In addition to all of the custom upgrades, every nook and cranny of the room was remodeled tailored to Dan and Nancy’s needs, including a unique custom built-in wall area where extra shelving was included. Extremely Happy with Wake Remodeling As far as the remodeling process, Dan and Nancy said that they would highly recommend Wake Remodeling. “The eight-week project went very well. There were zero surprises when it came to the budget and costs and they kept us very well informed,” they said. “Luke gave us updates on a daily basis, and we are extremely happy with the way it turned out.
