Logo Design The logo design for Granny’s Tonic started out as being reminiscent of a gilded mirror, with the logo shown below featured over a cottage on a hill. The emblem was adapted to the logo shown as the design for the packaging changed from an almost William Morris inspired design, to the one shown later in this folio. The logo for Granny’s Tonic was drawn by hand, redone with a black marker and then taken into photoshop. The brightness/contrast levels were edited, and the image was cropped. The image was also image traced using Adobe Illustrator. This edited logo was then used for the Tea packaging.
Original Design These were the first rough original designs for my tea packaging. However, the packaging was not quite giving the impression that I wanted it to, so I changed my design. The amount of colour has been reduced, so that it is not so reminiscent of paint swatches. Elements of these designs are still evident in the final ones, such as the pastel colours and the rose motif, however the design has been adapted to suit the designated market more appropriately. This tea brand is targeted at the older generation, with the pastel colours being reminiscent of old-fashioned wallpaper. The name also hints at this market, being named ‘Granny’s Tonic’. The flavours also seem to be ones that are rather popular with the older generation, especially the Rose flavoured one. The design of the box is also targeted at this generation, with the hexagonal design hinting at the old fashioned metal biscuit tins often found in the houses of grandmothers around the world.

Design Rational: The original logo design for Granny’s Tonic was somewhat reminiscent of a gilded mirror, featuring golden guilded edging with the brand name fitted around a cottage on a hill within. The emblem was then adapted to the logo shown previously as the design for the packaging changed. The logo for Granny’s Tonic was drawn by hand, redone with a black marker and then taken into photoshop. The brightness/contrast levels were edited, and the image was cropped. The image was also image traced using Adobe Illustrator. This edited logo was then used for the Tea packaging. This hand drawn method of creating the logo and the script that it has been done in, adds to the sense of age associated with this brand. The amount of colour present in the final design has been reduced from what there was originally, so that the packaging is not so reminiscent of paint swatches, and more so the old fashioned wallpapers often found in the homes of Grandmothers. Elements of the original designs are still evident in the final ones, such as the pastel colours and the rose motif, however the design has been adapted to suit the designated market more appropriately. This tea brand is targeted at the older generation. The colouring of the packaging hints at this older market, as does the name itself, being named ‘Granny’s Tonic’. The flavours also seem to be ones that are rather popular with the older generation, especially the Rose flavoured one. The design of the box is also targeted at this generation, with the hexagonal design hinting at the old fashioned metal biscuit tins often found in the houses of grandmothers around the world. Having said that this branding targets the older gneration, that is not to say that it can’t also target the younger generations too. I know that for myself, this packaging reminds me of evenings spent with my grandmother on her front porch drinking tea and eating cookies. The pale colouring of the flavour on the front of the packaging has also been expanded as a wash over the remainder of the packaging as well. This continues the theme of the flavouring and creates unity in the packaging. The lemon myrtle flavour is yellow, the Chai is a pale brown, and the Rose is a pale pink. Around the logo is a flavour specific border that I have created in Adobe Illustrator to fit each flavour. This adds a previously absent graphic element to the packaging, adding graphics to the previously purely text based design. Overall, I feel that this packaging that I have created is successful in its attempt to appeal to the older genration and those from the younger generations that spend a prolonged amount of time with them.
