Feturing Seed & Sprout Co Launching in 2016, Seed & Sprout started when founder Sophie had difficulty finding suitable reusable lunch containers for her son, inspiring her to create her own. From these lunchboxes, the store has now grown into a one-stop shop to help us reduce our reliance on single-use plastics, supplying a range of eco home, body and travel wares. Seed & Sprout is committed to ensuring that they are aware of every process, and that each process is as sustainable as possible, from manufacturing, right down to the delivery of the product to the customer. If the product cannot be made locally, then they ensure they partner with suppliers who are ethical in the treatment of employees and meet all safety standards. By choosing to purchase a product from Seed & Sprout, you can be sure you are supporting a company who is committed to change and minimising their impact on our fragile world.

FACE MASKS Your face needs extra love and care. It’s out, exposed to the elements all day, every day. Sun, wind and pollution. Our skin puts up with a lot. It can also reveal what’s happening on the inside. Stress, hormones, gut issues, can reveal themselves in a myriad of ways and cause our skin to go haywire. Face masks can assist in a number of ways, and there are a variety out there that can provide many benefits. Whether it’s to help detox and balance, hydrate and smooth, or stimulate and glow.

Mineral Oil is derived from the raw material of petroleum. The term 'mineral oil' can be used quite broadly and can refer to both untreated/mildly treated oil used in engine oils, transmission fluids and gear oils and also the highly refined oil used in baby lotions, cold creams, ointments and many other cosmetic and personal care products. The mineral oil used in cosmetics and personal care products is a clear, odourless liquid that has gone through many stages of processing and refining.

From an environmental perspective, crude oil or petroleum is a non-renewable resource that contributes to environmental damage and pollution at virtually every stage of production.

The properties of mineral oil create a barrier on the skin, trapping heat and not allowing the skin to breathe. Whilst this can be beneficial in some circumstances within the medical industry, it does nothing to nourish our skin from a cosmetic perspective. Its origin is from crude oil and has been so highly processed to remove all of the carcinogenic impurities, that the oil has no nutritional value and offers no benefit to our skin.

The mineral oil used in cosmetics and skincare products is regulated and must pass tests to prove its refinement, but knowing where it originates from should cause concern. When there are so many beautiful oils available to us that come direct from nature, it should make avoiding mineral oil an easier option.

Jojoba Oil * Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil

Jojoba Oil is non-comedogenic and doesn’t block pores, but protects against the harsh effects of nature by providing a protective and moisturising barrier on the skin. Unlike other oils it doesn’t leave a greasy residue, soothing and nourishing skin and helping balance the skin’s sebum production. Due to its similarities, the skin is more receptive to absorb vital nutrients and antioxidants, allowing your skin to behave how it was designed to. Jojoba Oil is a wonderful balancing oil making it suitable for all skin types. It hydrates and soothes sensitive skin, while cleansing and balancing oily and acne prone skin. It is hypoallergenic and improves the look and feel of both the skin and hair.

www.chemicalsafetyfacts.org Petroleum Engineering - Downstream - Environmental Impacts Of The Oil Industry Low Tox Life by Alexx Stuart www.thejojobacompany.com.au newdirectionsaromatics.com

Jojoba Oil has origins in the 18th century, when Native Americans ground Jojoba seeds into a salve to medicate the skin and condition the hair. Jojoba Oil is not really an oil but more of a liquid wax ester, and is the only plant that stores liquid wax in its seeds. It shares the same molecular structure as the natural oils in healthy human skin, and is comprised of nearly all the vitamins and minerals required for healthy skin and hair.

Fragrance What does the word fragrance actually mean? It’s not a specific ingredient that you recognise, so if we don’t actually know what it means how do we know if it’s harmful to our health? The definition of fragrance in the dictionary is; - a pleasant, sweet smell or; - a perfume or aftershave. It doesn’t really tell you what it is, or what it’s made up of though. Fragrance is defined by the FDA as ‘a combination of chemicals that gives each perfume or cologne (including those used in other products) its distinct scent.’ Fragrance essentially comes from petroleum or plants. Pure fragrances are essential oils from plants, flowers and raw materials. Synthetic fragrances are secret chemicals that are actually chemically closer to gasoline than they are to flowers. Fragrance houses are companies that specialise in developing fragrances, which other businesses then purchase to develop their own blends. In addition to these ‘scents’ or chemicals, perfumes and colognes also contain solvents, stabilisers, UV-absorbers, preservatives, and dyes. Perfumes and colognes are obvious culprits for fragrance, but fragrance can be hidden anywhere and in anything. It can be written on labels as any of the following; • Fragrance • Perfume • Parfum • Essential oil blend • Aroma It can be found in personal care products such as; sunscreen, shampoo, soap, body wash, deodorant, body lotion, makeup, facial cream, skin toner, serums and exfoliating scrubs. These are of most concern because you are applying them directly to your skin, but it doesn’t stop there. Scented products found both in and out of the home, such as air fresheners, cheap candles and other ‘scented ’products like washing powder, can be the source of many toxic chemicals.

Fragrance Perfume Parfum Essential Oil Blend Aroma

There are thousands of chemicals that make up the ingredients in fragrances, and some have evidence linking them to adverse health effects including cancer, reproductive toxicity, allergies and sensitivities. Benzophenone is linked to endocrine disruption and organ system toxicity. Acetaldehyde adversely affects kidneys and the reproductive, nervous and respiratory systems. Both of these chemicals are classified as potentially carcinogenic to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Phthalates are ‘plasticiser compounds’ which are used in synthetic fragrances to make them last longer. Unless the ingredients in your product have an asterisk and states ‘essential oils’, it will almost always be a synthetic fragrance. Even though our bodies tend to get rid of phthalates quite quickly, research studies show that repeated exposure on a daily basis causes the most damage, overwhelming us and allowing the toxins to build up over time. This damage can range from low sperm counts, to asthma, to increased risk of breast cancer and tumours.

Australian regulations are very similar to the US, in that companies are required to list all ingredients on their product labels. These ingredients must be specifically identified and listed in descending order calculated by either mass or volume. The quantity or percentage of each ingredient does not need to be declared. However, fragrances and flavours are the only ingredients that can be generically listed. This exclusion is protected as ‘trade secrets’ to preserve companies secret formulas. Unfortunately this loophole in the regulations creates a lack of disclosure that prevents consumers from knowing the full list of ingredients. These chemicals are not tested in a lab, but on humans instead. We are the experiment and we are only just starting to find out the consequences. Unfortunately once you know this information you can’t ignore it, but why would you want to! We have a right to know what's in the everyday products we use, and we can make the choice to not buy the ones that could potentially harm us and our families. Clearly the industry needs stronger regulations, more research and greater transparency, but before that happens it is up to us to be informed and protect our loved ones. Yes, there are A LOT of products out there with synthetic fragrances, but there are also so many wonderful small businesses creating non toxic products with quality essential oils from plants. If you aren’t sure on the ingredients, ask! The companies doing the right thing and have nothing to hide will be open and clarify any questions you have. The ones who are cryptic with their answers or aren’t able to answer truthfully should just be avoided. There is so much choice, and we vote with our dollar, so make it count.

Mimosa Botanicals

The Purity Project

Q&A

Mimosa Botanicals Q&A with Founder Christiana

What inspired you to start your business? I've always made aromatherapy products and had been making them under another brand for at least a decade but it felt more like a hobby than a business. It wasn't until I was working for my friend Michelle from Sow n' Sow when she was based here in Castlemaine (and my son was at an age where my freedoms were returning somewhat) that I realised that I could give this small business thing a go. I had so many recipes and so much loveliness to share that I just went for it with the full support of my husband, friends and family! Why do you choose to use only natural or organic ingredients? I have always shied away from synthetics as I have always been somewhat sensitive to them, whether in a cream or candle or soap! As a qualified aromatherapist, this of course was my foundation and trade so I wouldn't use anything but natural. Your favourite product? I love all my products of course but I always go back to my first bath soak blend that I created for Mimosa Botanicals, which is the French Lavender & Oat Milk soak as I find it so restorative and calming when I am feeling depleted. It's simple and comforting.

Currently reading? The Language Of Flowers by Mandy Kirkby currently, it's a beautiful book well about flowers and their traditional meaning. I am also partial to a good French memoir. I love reading about other people's experiences in the world. Favourite travel destination? I've been fortunate enough to have travelled quite a bit in my time and lived abroad for 3 years in the early/mid 2000's and have loved every place that I have visited for varied reasons. My favourite at the moment would be Provence in the South of France to visit the lavender fields, fragrant gardens and essential oil distilleries. I was supposed to go in June but Covid put a stop to that! Hopefully in a few years time, I'll get the opportunity again. Favourite quote? I don't have a favourite quote but anything poetic that relates to nature or flowers gets me.

What’s your favourite way to look after yourself? Going for morning walks daily or longer ones on the weekends with my family. Sitting in nature & having a bath (naturally!). Currently creating? Another luxe bath product.

Q&A with Director Wendy

What inspired you to start your business?

Q&A

Revelry Hair Co

The beauty industry is in my blood and I started working after school in a salon when I was 14 and have loved it ever since. I have worked across every area of the beauty industry, which led me to natural beauty, and I became very passionate about better ingredient choices. I have curly, hard to manage hair, and the natural products available didn’t quite stack up. I had to choose between manageable hair or ingredients, and so Revelry was born. Why do you choose to use only natural ingredients? We are committed to using only ingredients that benefit the hair, scalp and skin. We choose all of our ingredients with performance in mind and will it make a better product and experience for our customers.

Currently creating? We are always coming up with new product ideas. I love the creative process of working out if it is a good idea and can if we can make it within our ingredients criteria to our standards. We have some exciting product launches for the beginning of 2021 that we have been working on all year.

Your favourite product? Our Repair Elixir is my desert island product. What’s your favourite way to look after yourself?

Currently reading?

Time outside in nature. The ocean is definitely my happy place.

I have just finished The Wife & The Widow and could not put it down. Favourite travel destination? I have never been anywhere that I haven’t loved. I think travel is so good for your soul and seeing and learning about different cultures, makes you more aware of how important diversity and equality is not to mention how lucky we are to live in this amazing country. Q&A

The Purity Project Q&A with Founder Gabrielle

What inspired you to start your business?

What’s your favourite way to look after yourself?

I launched The Purity Project after years of struggling with my own skin and self-image. I was truly exhausted by complicated ingredient lists, copious amounts of products, and uncertainty around what I was actually putting on my skin. That's why I decided to strip it all back and tap into nature's powerful offering. When I discovered the amazing results of using plant botanicals, I decided to dive into the world of small business ownership and create a brand that shifts the way consumers experience skincare by handcrafting nourishing products that empower consumers, encourage mindfulness and self-care, and reconnect us with nature.

As I'm sure this is the case for a lot of people, our lives are super busy. I try to adopt a slower lifestyle and make time for self-care by not adding more things to my to-do list. Instead, I incorporate the practice of mindfulness into my skincare ritual followed by daily self-love affirmations. That way I'm not having to find extra time in my day, I just add intention and purpose to my existing skincare ritual. We encourage this practice with all of our clients by including a mindfulness card with each purchase - you should try it, it will change your skincare experience for the better!

Why do you choose to use only natural or organic ingredients? Natural ingredients have been used for centuries for both therapeutic and cosmetic purposes and have been shown to deliver great results. They offer so many nourishing properties and are a joy to work with. At The Purity Project, we believe nature knows best that's why we only use 100% natural ingredients. We also understand that just because a product is natural doesn't always mean it's great for your skin depending on how those botanicals were grown and harvested. That's why we stick to organic goodness that's free from pesticides, insecticides, hormones, and other nasty chemicals. Your favourite product? That's a tough question! But...if I had to choose it would be the Daily Balancing Cleanser. This beautiful oil cleanser is rich in essential fatty acids, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, and is packed with vitamins A, C, D, E, & K. This was my very first product and the one that transformed my skin. Now I can't live without it!

Currently creating? We recently launched our newest product; Daily Balancing AM Oil which now completes the Daily Balancing Range. We aim for our range to be minimalistic and believe less is more, so for now, there will be no further additions to our range. Currently reading? I'm reading the Small Collective mindful magazine currently. There are some really thoughtful pieces and amazing small businesses featured which I am enjoying discovering in the evening after work. Favourite travel destination? One can only dream of traveling in 2020! The last big trip I did was to Japan which I absolutely loved. I fell in love with the culture, landscapes, and lifestyle - and the snow was like no other! My partner and I are focussing on traveling locally and exploring our beautiful backyard in Australia until we're able to go abroad again. Next trip on the list is Yamba, NSW which we're really looking forward to.

Favourite quote? "Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance." - Coco Chanel Final words… Often our relationship with mirrors and self image taint our feelings towards skincare. Caring for your skin should bring you a sense of happiness, gratitude, and self-love. We hope more and more people will invite us to come along on their skincare journey and discover the beauty that they are.

Hanami COSMETICS WITH A CONSCIENCE Founded by naturopath Hannah, Hanami Cosmetics creates cosmetics with natural plant based ingredients. Hanami’s range of products include; nail polishes, mineral cream blush, BB cream, lipsticks and more. Hannah is passionate about what she creates, and is committed to ensuring everything meets her ethical standards and values. Read on to find out more about Hannah and the incredible business she has created, including her brand new Plant Polish! When did you start Hanami? I started Hanami in 2016 as a side project, I was already running a pretty full on small business of my own and working full time in another job. I had no idea it would become my 'one and only' after just a couple of months from launching. What inspired you to start Hanami? I had worked in the health food industry (as a naturopath, store manager, and sales rep) for over 10 years at the time that I started to create Hanami - I realised that there was a gap in the market when it came to ‘clean’ beauty products that were bright, bold, and fun to look at, which also ticked all of the ethical boxes that were super important to me as a consumer… so, I set out to do it myself.

TM

You have just launched your brand new ‘Plant Polish’, congratulations! Tell us more about this new formula. Thank you! It has always been my mission to create safer alternatives to commercial beauty products, and when Hanami first launched back in 2016 the nail polish range was '7 free' meaning the harshest seven ingredients in the 'traditional' nail polish recipe were stripped out of the formula. In 2017 we found a way to remove even more of the troubling chemicals and moved to a '10 free' formula, but still I dreamt of finding a way to make Hanami nail polishes even 'greener'—and last month we did just that with the new Plant Polish formula. It's made from 82% naturally derived ingredients (such as corn, cotton, sugarcane and potato) - rather than petrochemicals. It is still breathable, water permeable, 10 free (non toxic), as well as certified vegan, cruelty free, and Australian made. What aspect of your business do you enjoy most? Creating new products, drawing up ideas for packaging, and also seeing what colours are trending on runways in the EU and US - as they are a couple of seasons ahead of us it is exciting to see what will be trending in Australia colour wise come the next summer or winter What do you find most challenging? My inbox! Do not start me.... it's a mess, and the thing I least enjoy trying to organise. I'd rather be looking at pretty colours or testing out a new formula any day! What keeps you motivated and inspired? I focus on what makes me happy, and I reflect on this daily. I am motivated by a constant goal to keep improving and updating Hanami products to reach their 'cleanest and greenest' potential. You have created an incredible range of non-toxic beauty products, do you have any favourites? Haha it's like trying to pick a favourite child (lucky I only have one, so at least that's an easy decision)... ummm I would have to say our Super Soothie BB Cream (I wear 'nude' every day in every season) and on my nails I am usually sporting either Purple Rain or Tides. Do you have a morning routine? Yes, I love mornings. I always start with a very large stove brewed coffee with coconut oil, and chop up a big fruit salad with my 3 year old. We then sit down to scoff it, and play LEGO for a large part of the morning.

What's your favourite way to unwind? I absolutely LOVE Yin Yoga, I was so surprised at the immediate improvements I had in body and mind after I started doing it regularly. I'm also the world's biggest fan of massage, though they are few and far between. Your favourite quote? “Life is amazing. And then it's awful. And then it's amazing again. And in between the amazing and awful it's ordinary and mundane and routine. Breathe in the amazing, hold on through the awful, and relax and exhale during the ordinary. That's just living heartbreaking, soul-healing, amazing, awful, ordinary life. And it's breathtakingly beautiful.” LR Knost

h i r N CHOCOLATE Noun; A food in the form of a paste or solid block made from roasted and ground cacao seeds, typically sweetened and eaten as confectionery. Somewhere along the line chocolate went from something pure to something so processed. Raw cacao is the real chocolate, not the sugar-filled confectionary it has become today. Our tastebuds have also made the adjustment over time. If you have ever tried raw cacao it may have tasted bitter and not very enjoyable the first time. The difference is huge and you can’t compare. If you have normal chocolate, it’s addictive right? Hard to stop at just a couple of squares? Suddenly you’ve gone from just one more row to there being none left. (We’ve all been there!) That’s because the sugar is addictive and there is nothing nutritious to tell your body it's full or satisfied. With real cacao chocolate, you can eat a little bit and you are satisfied. It’s filled with antioxidants and feel good nutrients that are good for you. Yes, chocolate that is good for you!

Raw Love Delicious naturally sourced raw cacao that’s organic, vegan and Fair Trade. Blended with unique ingredients described as superfoods with healing superpowers. Raw, native and wild, perfect if you are looking for something a little unique, with flavours such as Brain Love and Immuni-Shroom. Available on www.madewithrawlove.com

The Cheeky Project These gourmet artisan chocolates are gluten, dairy, soy and refined sugar free. Using delicious cacao paired with traditional ingredients like fruit and nut, raspberry and coconut, or go for the indulgent Ferrerocky Road. The Cheeky Project chocolates are healthy but not so serious. #cheekycacao Available on www.thecheekyproject.com.au

Pana Organic Vegan and free from gluten, dairy, soy and refined sugar. Real chocolate without preservatives. Smooth, rich and silky cacao that is chock full of antioxidants. Using carefully sourced, all natural ingredients, available in a great selection of classic flavours. My pick is the classic mint chocolate. Available on www.pana-organic.com and in Coles, Woolworths and independent grocers Australia wide.

Chow Cacao Raw organic chocolate that tastes like ‘real’ chocolate, that is Raw Cacao’s mission. Using carefully sourced ingredients such as Fair Trade raw cacao from Peru, and raw coconut sugar from Indonesia, these are delicious simple flavours that pack a punch. Bonus - they come in mylk chocolate if you find traditional cacao too bitter! My flavour pick is the Orange Jaffa. Available on www.chowcacao.com.au

Loco Love Chocolate Eating Loco Love chocolate is an experience. They are the first company in Australia to make medicinal chocolates, and all the recipes have been created by a naturopath and nutritionist. Each chocolate is a synergy of herbs and healing spices combined with organic, Fair Trade and sustainable cacao beans from Peru. These are pure indulgence. Treat yourself with the Lovers Box - a selection of their best artisan chocolates packaged into a beautiful box delivered straight to your door. Available on www.locolove.com

Low-Tox

Living

Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen Organic produce can be pricey and not always readily available. Farmers markets are an amazing option to source produce directly from the grower. It’s freshly picked and is generally sold by the growers themselves. That means any questions you have can be answered truthfully straight away! Not everyone has access to a local farmers market though, so their local grocer or supermarket is the only option. This means selecting organic or spray-free produce (if they even have it!) may not be affordable. To reduce your exposure and avoid consuming unnecessary nasty chemicals from pesticides, try and source organic produce from the ‘Dirty Dozen’ list. These are the 12 most highly sprayed fruits and vegetables. There is also a ‘Clean Fifteen’ list of the 15 least sprayed fruits and vegetables. These are safer to purchase normally. Remember to always wash your fruit and vegetables before you cook or eat them to remove any chemicals, residues or anything else picked up from transport or storage!
