Edtors Letter

Wlce Hello 2021! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and you were able to do some things that brought you joy. I feel so fortunate to have had a couple of small local getaways over the holidays, and then a quick trip to Hobart to visit my sister and meet my new nephew. I feel so grateful that I was able to safety make it over there and back to Perth while the borders were open. We are already a couple of months into the new year and it has already thrown a few curveballs at us to keep us on our toes. From snap lockdowns to closed borders, the rollercoaster ride of 2020 will continue on for a while longer. The unpredictability can be unsettling, but I think it’s important to stay open to change and be flexible when required. Make time for the things that bring you joy.

NATURAL PERFUME Fragrance can have so many meanings, but essentially it comes from either petroleum or plants. Pure fragrances are essential oils from plants, flowers and raw materials. Synthetic fragrances are secret chemicals that are actually chemically closer to gasoline than they are to flowers. (There is a great article on fragrance in our previous issue). I want to show you some of the amazing companies out there producing beautiful pure fragrances created from all natural ingredients. If you have been using synthetic perfumes for awhile, it may take a period of adjustment when converting to a natural perfume, as they smell completely different. You will be able to notice the pure essential oils and your senses will adjust quite quickly. After time you may even be able to tell when someone else is wearing a synthetic perfume and find it quite overwhelming! We all have a unique scent profile and are drawn to different fragrances, so these companies below have a wonderful range to hopefully suit everybody.

ONE SEED PERFUMES ‘Real perfume made from real plants for real people.’ These powerful fragrances are all natural and use at least 80% organic ingredients. Available in both a traditional spray and also a rollerball, scents range from woody, fresh, floral and oriental to appeal to your unique scent profile. Unisex fragrances, sample sets, and a unique scent bar online to create your own signature fragrance are also available. From $15. Available on www.oneseedperfumes.com

KYND SCENT 100% natural perfumes inspired by the Australian landscape. These potent fragrances are available in 4 unique scents in a handy rollerball. The sample set is also the perfect option to try all 4 fragrances before investing in your favourite. From $39. Available on www.kyndscent.com.au

IME NATURAL PERFUMES Officially certified 100% natural by the Natural Perfumers Guild (NPG), you can be sure of iIME’s high standards and commitment to creating quality natural fragrances. Featuring an extensive range of scents in both a rollerball and solid perfume tube, you’ll be able find your favourite fragrance here. Samples and sets also available to help you decide. From $12.50. Available on www.ime-natural-perfume.com.au

SERENE BODY HEALTH Serene focuses on not only the beautiful scent of their perfume oils, but the therapeutic benefits of the oils used. Balancing beauty with self-care, each fragrance is designed for a specific purpose to support and nurture you throughout the day. All scents come as a rollerball, and samples and sets are available too. From $15. Available on www.serenebodyhealth.com

SLS / SLES

Ingredient

Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES) are industrially produced and derive from palm kernel oil or coconut oil. SLS was originally created to be used as a garage floor cleaner and degreaser. SLES was then produced as an alcohol form (ethoxylated) version of SLS. They are both inexpensive and very effective foaming agents, with excellent cleaning and emulsifying properties. SLS/SLES can be found in a variety of personal care products including liquid soap, shampoo, laundry detergents, dishwashing liquid, toothpaste and bath bombs. It creates a wonderful lather that we have now become accustomed to and associate with being ‘clean’. The issue is that it strips the skin of its natural oils, and interferes with the skins natural ability to regulate and protect itself.

By removing all of the skins oils, your skin can become dry, and over time you may develop inflammatory skin reactions such as itchy skin and scalp, eczema or dermatitis. SLS/SLES are not only known to be a skin irritant, but also an irritation to your eyes and lungs. To measure this level of irritation to your skin, lungs and eyes, many products are tested on animals to see if it is ‘safe’ for human use. No products should have to be tested on animals, and if they are a concern, shouldn’t we just be avoiding them? When using products without this ingredient, there will be an adjustment period where you have to get used to the low lather of the product, and not having the squeaky clean feeling afterwards. Your skin will adjust to the change over time and love you for it in the end!

Aloe Vera Aloe is a medicinal plant that has be used for thousands of years. It can be used both topically and taken internally. It is most commonly known and used for treating burns, as it reduces the pain associated with the burn and assists with the healing of the wound. The gel of the Aloe vera is soothing, moisturising and cooling, making it beneficial for a range of skin issues and complaints. It has antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, helping soothe irritated and dry skin, and has also been known to reduce inflammation making it useful in helping clear acne. In recent times Aloe vera drinks have gained more popularity, and when it is consumed and taken internally, Aloe can improve digestive health and assist with digestive issues. Please note that this is generally safe, but could react with other medications or substances if you are taking internally.

There are some wonderful Aloe vera products on the market, but do your research and be aware of additional ingredients in topical gels and products. Look for the percentage of Aloe vera, plus any other ingredients that could be possible synthetic chemicals. It should be as pure as possible to ensure you are accessing all of the amazing benefits of the Aloe vera plant.

References:

The Aloe vera plant is relatively easy to grow, flourishing with enough sunlight and warmth. It is a great option to grow your own, allowing you to break a piece off and access the healing properties as soon as you have a small burn. This will assist with the pain and severity of the burn, plus its ability to heal.

Microbeads The tiny product causing huge issues to marine life, the environment and human health.

According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the European Chemicals Agency, microplastics are very small fragments of plastic than are less than 5mm in length. Microplastics are not a specific type of plastic, but can come from a variety of sources, including cosmetics, clothing and industrial processes. One type of microplastic of great concern are microbeads. These are small, solid, manufactured plastic particles that don’t dissolve or degrade in water. These are found in a variety of cosmetics and personal care products. They are often used as an abrasive or exfoliant in place of natural exfoliating ingredients, or as a cheap filler or bulking agent. They are relatively cheap so companies use them in place of more expensive ingredients, therefore keeping the manufacturing costs of products lower. They are often found in face wash or scrubs, hand or body wash, toothpaste, sunscreen, and cosmetics such as foundation. Common microbead ingredients include; -

Polyethylene (PE) Polypropylene (PP) Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) Nylon (PA)

Due to their tiny composition, microbeads can be barely visible to the naked eye. As they are generally used in rinseoff products, they flow straight from the bathroom drain and into our sewer systems. Arriving at the wastewater treatment plants, they are unable to be completely captured and filtered out, continuing on their journey and entering our rivers and oceans. This is causing a devastating effect on our marine life, especially smaller sea animals unable to tell the difference between food and microplastics. These are then passed along the marine food chain, eventually ending up with humans. Yes, if we are eating fish or other animals from the ocean, it is likely we are ingesting a small amount of microplastics.

15 countries currently ban, or have taken steps to ban microbeads. This includes New Zealand, the UK and the USA. Australia does not currently ban microbeads in products. In 2016 the Department of Energy and Environment worked with industry and state and territory government to support a voluntary phase-out of microbeads in rinse-off products. An independent assessment in late 2017 found that of the approximately 4400 supermarket, pharmacy and cosmetic store products inspected, 94% were microbead free. This still left 6% which still included this troublesome ingredient, plus the numerous products which aren’t classified as rinse-off. The Australian Government has previously stated that they would ban microbeads by July 2018 if the industry had not completely stopped using them. Neither of these things have happened so far. Even though we have come so far, other countries are leading the way and have banned this unnecessary ingredient.

Planet-friendly alternatives to microbead exfoliators: - Jojoba beads - Salt - Coffee - Oats - Coffee - Yoghurt - Sugar

There are some amazing resources out there to help you with the issue of microbeads, the best being ‘Beat the Micro Bead’. This website and app was created by the Plastic Soup foundation and is an incredible resource, where you can search for a particular brand or product and see their rating, and if microplastics are included. They have also created a certification that companies can apply for. Companies are then able to use the ‘Zero Plastic Inside’ logo on their products, which clearly show consumers that their products are 100% free of microplastics, guaranteed. Microbeads are not biodegradable, so once they enter the environment, especially our waterways and oceans, they are almost impossible to remove. That is why we need to remove the problem before it makes its way into the environment. The Government is making changes, but until there is legislation banning microbeads it is up to us to choose products that don’t include them. With the increase in amazing natural products, we have a vast selection of alternative products to choose from that are more effective, and healthier for us, the environment and our families.

Q&A

The Purist Collection Q&A with Founder Emily @thepuristcollection www.thepuristcollection.com

What inspired you to start The Purist Collection? After my mum fell ill with a type of cancer that was found to be genetic when I was 18, I started to realise that I needed to make some serious changes in order to reclaim control of my health and my future, and to become the radiant woman that I think I (and all women) truly deserve to be… all whilst inspiring other women to do the same! The first step was to ditch an unfulfilling career in fashion, and to instead take up a degree in Naturopathy (a Bachelor of Health Science) to learn everything there was to know about holistic health and natural healing. With my education came the ability and wisdom to not only help my naturopathic clients, but also to formulate gorgeous, natural skin + lifestyle products – and, in doing so, help an even larger group of women. Why do you choose to use only natural or organic ingredients? I understand – I’ve literally seen first-hand, in my clients and in my beautiful Mum, and even in myself – the impacts of using non-natural, conventional products on our health and wellbeing. And ain’t no one got time for that! Especially me. Our skin is our largest organ; it needs to process everything we put on and into it, just like any other. Your favourite product? My Facial Oil was one of the first skincare products in the Collection, and it’s been a very firm favourite of mine ever since – I wear it daily, it absorbs so nicely, and it doubles as an oil cleanser, rash-soother, hair treatment + so much more for me. And it’s still one of the products I get the most amazing feedback on, which is lovely! Although, having said this… we recently released our first sheet mask, which is actually a limited-edition product, and wow… the Facial Oil might have some real competition here! It’s full of hyaluronic acid and native hydrating goodness.

What’s your favourite way to look after yourself? Funnily enough, most of my relaxation rituals involve some kind of skin or body care product (or a few!) – I love nothing more than a good face mask while soaking in the bath, but even applying my Body Oil or Lotion every day reminds me to slow down, become present, and give love to my body (because, let’s face it, our bodies are pretty amazing!). I also love to balance out work with play as much as possible. That’s something I really became acutely aware that I didn’t have enough of in my life last year! So I started roller skating, and haven’t looked back – it’s SO much fun! And it’s one of the very few activities I’m able to totally enjoy without being interrupted by work-related thoughts. Currently creating? We’ve got a few really exciting new products in the pipeline for the skincare range at The Purist Collection at the moment, including our facial cleansers, which our poor customers have been crying out for for years, and some super special serums. And we’re working with a couple of other incredible local wellness businesses at the moment on their own products, too. Aside from that, I’ve just put the finishing touches on a little pinboard I made and covered with a collage of polaroid pictures of all of my loved ones and I. It’s so special, I love it! And putting it together brought up so many wonderful, warm, fuzzy memories. Currently reading? I’ve almost always got at least two books on the go, and usually a pretty interesting combo: at the moment it’s Sarah J Maas’s ‘A Court of Thorns & Roses’ series, coupled with ‘Profit First’ by Mike Michalowicz. Favourite travel destination? Oh gosh, this is a tricky one to answer! I’d probably have said Santorini, the Greek Island, right up until I went to Edinburgh in 2019 – it was pretty hard to come home actually, such an incredible city! Favourite quote? “Whenever you’re going through a bad day just remember, your track record for getting through bad days, so far, is 100%; and that’s pretty damn good.”

Q&A

GoodLove Goods Q&A with Founder Fiona What inspired you to start your business? I’ve always felt the pull to create and that there’s something more I could offer and sink my teeth into outside of a 9-5 desk job (many of which I’ve held). I first started to play with some ideas when I was still pregnant with my little lad and one idea evolved to where I began to seriously research and develop it just after he’d turned one. At the time (not anymore, since COVID!) I noticed there was a gap in the market for online eco-friendly/vegan gift boxes that were also beautifully designed, modern, and offered premium products. I loved the idea that I could work on this business from my home studio and fit it in wherever I could around being the primary parent for our kid. Why do you choose to use natural and eco-friendly products in your gifts? As I was developing the business idea I was also embarking on a bit of a shift in my own values and decided I just couldn’t stomach putting something out into the world that harmed our environment, people or animals. After all, no one really NEEDED what I wanted to create and anytime I’d walk into a big department store I was always overwhelmed by just how much stuff (and junk) is out there in the world. I also really wanted to prove that there are options out there for other people who not only care about the consumer choices they make, but also appreciate beauty, quality and aesthetics. There’s nothing wrong with wanting or having both! The more we support businesses who are achieving both, the more businesses there will be that provide both. Do you have a favourite gift box? Ohhhhh, that’s like naming your favourite child! Haha. I do love the largest box from our new range, the Complete Pamper Box, because I would be absolutely thrilled to receive one! I ooh and ahh over all of the largest boxes as I pack them actually, I just think they’re so impressive and great value too. What’s your favourite way to look after yourself?

All Images by GoodLove Goods

I’m not doing a very good job of that anymore, but I am trying to turn things around this year. I love and need silence and time to think, as I’m a bit of an extroverted introvert, so looking after myself can look like going for a long walk, pottering around in our garden or getting out the paints and losing myself there (I actually find painting really meditative!).

Currently creating? New styled images for our collections as well as another couple of ranges. I’m also really itching to try my hand at a large scale painting for our lounge room… wish me luck! I might share some progress shots on socials if it’s looking at all promising. I’ll probably need some objective eyes! Currently reading? ’The Big Leap’ by Gay Hendricks. I’m almost finished and it’s been quite illuminating. It’s about how to overcome your ‘Upper Limit Problem’… the thing that holds you back from reaching that next level of abundance, love and success in your life. Like, when things are going great or we have a big win we can often bring ourselves down with negative thoughts, orchestrate a fight with our partner or suffer a business mishap because it can feel more comfortable for us to return to that perceived ‘deserved’ state. I thought it was a really apt concept for me this year with wanting to continue to grow GoodLove Goods and also aiming to function in some sort of loving and sane way once I’m a sleep-deprived Mum to a newborn in a few months haha. My word/s for the year are ‘Rise Up’ so it kinda goes well with that I think! Favourite travel destination? I’d love to check out Japan as I’ve never been, but would really REALLY love to return to Mallorca with my little fam one day or rent a farmhouse in Tuscany with a big group of friends or something. That would be incredible. Live that pasta/wine and bicycle life day in, day out. Favourite quote? Perhaps unsurprisingly, at this point in the Q&A, I have a few favourites - ‘Everything is Figureoutable’ by Marie Forleo, ’I cannot do all the good that the world needs. But the world needs all the good that I can do’ by Jana Stanfield and, last but in no way least, ’We’re not here to f*ck spiders’ (origins unknown). A brilliant one to remember! @goodlovegoods www.goodlovegoods.com.au

Q&A

Poppet & Co Women’s Wellness Q&A with Founder Abigail @poppet_co_womenswellness Coming soon! Stay tuned for launch.

What inspired you to start Poppet & Co Women’s Wellness? Throughout my Nutrition studies and after working with many patients, in particularly women’s health and hormones, I began to notice a very clear need for something to be made to naturally assist with issues such as PMS, anxiety, hormonal adult acne and menopause. These issues came up so often yet most patients were on medication or having to take multiple vitamins many times a day to get any relief of their symptoms. I myself even as a Clinical Nutritionist have struggled to find quality scientific researched backed supplements that are catered specifically to these issues. I began my company Poppet & Co. Women’s Wellness originally just with an idea to create a formula to assist with my own personal experiences of PMS and anxiety which lead me to develop the first product in the range ’Lady Luna’ in the hopes it may help other women too. Why are natural or organic ingredients important to you? Growing up in a little country town on the East Coast of Australia, I was born surrounded by fresh produce grown on farms and was raised by my parents who were Naturopaths and in the health industry, so I guess you could say it was second nature from a young age. Since working and studying Medical Science and Nursing, it gave me a non bias understanding of both worlds, natural vs medical which I have seen the need for both. The reason I am so passionate about natural ingredients is because you can use nature as medicine if you obtain high quality, highly bioavailable ingredients and use science based research to ensure optimum results are achieved, allowing many patients whom could only take western medicine an alternative choice. Your favourite product you offer? Hmmm, well there are many in the pipeline and still in the making in TGA but my absolute favourite would definitely be ‘Lady Luna‘ as it is such a unique concept and flows with the natural hormone cycle. It’s a first ever made product, so you will have to wait and see!

What’s your favourite way to look after yourself? My self care daily ritual will usually consist of either a walk in nature, ocean sunset swims, journaling, having almond cappuccinos with my kitten Lola in my garden, massages, reading books on spirituality and wellness, having a social media detox and doing a nightly meditation on my new app ‘Calm’. I’m also working on saying no to things and people who don’t bring me positive vibes. Currently creating? We are currently creating a women’s wellness online store to complement our women’s nutritional supplements. We have been busy trialling and testing our most favourite Australian made women’s health products we know and love for you to enjoy too, and purchase on our website soon. You can expect to see everything from herbal teas, wellness books to raw health chocolates, candles and more, listed under ’Poppet’s Loves Collection’ on our website store. Currently reading? I’m obsessed with books, anything wellness or spiritual related and am currently reading two at the moment. This month’s reads in my home are; ’The Universe has your back’ by Gabrielle Bernstein ’Everything you’ll ever need, you can find within yourself’ by Charlotte Freeman Favourite travel destination? This one is tricky! Well my dream destination which I’m yet to travel to would be Italy and South of France for sure. My most memorable of my travels would have to be Edinburgh Scotland, the history is breathtaking and Zanzibar Island in East Africa, a truly life changing experience. Favourite quote? “She woke each morning with the option of being anyone she wished. How beautiful it was that she always chose herself” - Tyler Kent White.

USING BUSINESS AS A FORCE FOR GOOD ‘Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. B Corps are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy.’

The B Corp movement started in 2006, by three friends who were passionate about helping companies improve their positive impact. After leaving their careers in business, they created this organisation to assist mission-driven companies and create a community where the focus is not just on their ability to generate returns, but also create value for their customers, employees and the environment. The B Corp Certification allows the public to see that these businesses are committed to creating a positive impact in every aspect of their business. In 2007 the first 82 B Corps were certified, and started the incredible community it is today. There is an awakening and a growing global movement towards people wanting a business not only for profit, but to make a difference. Profits alone aren’t enough, and they want their business to create positive change. They want to steer away from greed and ego towards a more sustainable and enjoyable way of business, that not only benefits the CEO’s but every worker within the business. Being seen to be doing good is easy, actually doing good is hard work. Businesses have the power to help change some of society most challenging problems, that government and nonprofits can’t do alone. The B Corp community is helping businesses lead this change. Some of the key issues they focus on are; reducing inequality, lowering levels of poverty, a healthier environment, stronger communities and creating more quality jobs that help give people dignity and purpose.

The B Impact Assessment is the first step to understanding how significant a company’s impact is. This assessment measures the social and environmental performance and then provides an objective judgement and rating. The company must receive a minimum verified score on the B Impact Assessment to then receive B Corp Certification. This rigorous assessment evaluates the company’s overall impact on its workers, customers, community and environment, not just their product or service. This process is not one to be taken lightly. The company must be completely committed to every step, and when they are approved must amend their legal documents to show their commitment to balance profit and purpose. This combination of third-party validation, public transparency and legal accountability help B Corps build trust and value in both the economy and community. The B Corp global network creates standards, policies and tools to support businesses in the B Corp community, helping them lead the way and show that we can adjust our economic system for the better. Any company can go online and use the B Impact Assessment tool to measure their impact, giving them an idea of where they currently are, and areas they could improve on. h i r N BEVERAGES Pure, filtered water is essential for keeping our bodies hydrated and nourished, but sometimes we just feel like something a little different. Our tastebuds need something entertaining and delicious. There are so many drinks out there to choose from, but so many are loaded with sugar or artificial sweeteners. We shouldn’t have to compromise, so here are a few great alternatives to choose from, whether you feel like something fizzy, hot, juicy or spirits that are non-alcoholic!

Inner Ego Sourcing their ingredients from local suppliers and farmers, Inner Ego’s juices are cold pressed to ensure the essential vitamins and nutrients remain for you to enjoy. These raw juices are a great way to up your fruit and vegetable intake and are refreshing to enjoy at any time of the day. Available on www.innerego.com.au

Remedy A delicious sweet and sour drink that makes your tastebuds come alive. Kombucha doesn’t contain sugar, naturally, and is full of live cultures, organic acids and antioxidants. Still made in small batches with a range of delicious flavours, kombucha is a healthy alternative when you're craving something fizzy. My favourite is the Raspberry and Lemonade. Available on www.remedydrink.com and in Woolworths, Coles, selected service stations and independent stockists.

Freed Freed is the Aussie modern take on iced tea that offers a healthy alternative to traditional iced tea loaded full of sugar and sweeteners. Freed is an organic brewed tea that’s lightly sparkling and unsweetened with unique flavour combinations, think Blueberry and Lemon or Peach and Vanilla. Available on www.freedbeverages.com very soon!

Jomeis Fine Foods Using 100% natural and plant-based ingredients, Jomeis offer a delicious range of nutritional lattes that are dairy, gluten and sugar free. In a variety of flavours, the lattes can be enjoyed hot or cold with your choice of milk. My pick is the Cacao Mint with almond milk. Available on www.jomeisfinefoods.com.au

SeedLip SeedLip is the world’s first distilled non-alcoholic spirit. A great option if you feel like having a drink but have to drive, or you are someone who chooses not to drink alcohol for any reason. With 3 options including the original ‘Spice94’ Aromatic, the ‘Garden 108’ Herbal blend, and the new ‘Grove 42’ Citrus. These can be mixed with tonic water or jazz it up and make it into a delicious cocktail. Available on www.seedlipdrinks.com and Dan Murphy’s and selected bottle shops.

Tea Time MATCHA MAIDEN Matcha green tea powder has been around for centuries, being used in traditional Japanese green tea ceremonies. Matcha powder is created using pure green tea leaves which are then ground into a fine powder. As you are consuming the whole dissolved leaf, not just the brewed water like regular green tea, matcha has up to 137 times the antioxidants and up to 10 times the nutritional content. Matcha Maiden’s premium quality matcha green tea powder is sourced from its birthplace Japan. It’s certified organic, which is incredibly important considering you are consuming the whole leaf, and ensures you are not ingesting harmful chemical and pesticides. With numerous health benefits, matcha can boost energy, focus and metabolism. As a healthier caffeine alternative, it releases slowly into the body over time, unlike caffeine found in coffee beans which can produce a spike and subsequent low in energy levels. Matcha can be enjoyed mixed with hot water, your choice of warm milk to make a latte, or even added to any recipe to add some great nutritional benefits!

Cretive Journey of Something Growing up I fondly remember sitting around doing puzzles with my family. I have always loved them and will regularly get one out when I want to relax and do something different. It is a great way to relax your mind and bring some mindfulness into your day, whether you have a few minutes or a few hours to spare. It’s something you can always come back to. When the world slowed down last year, so many people discovered, or rediscovered, their love of puzzles. It’s a wonderful activity to spend doing with family or just to pass the time by yourself.

Journey of Something is an Australian owned, female founded company creating beautiful eye-catching puzzles. Working with emerging and established artists from around the world, you are not just buying a puzzle, but a piece of artwork that you can hang when you're finished.

Biodegradable vs Compostable Despite these terms being used interchangeably, they are not the same.

As the world becomes more aware of our waste problem, alternatives are arising to replace the cheap and inexpensive use of plastic. Two of these are products made of materials that are biodegradable and compostable. What we need to be aware of though is that all compostable material is biodegradable, but not all biodegradable material is compostable. There are a few differences between biodegradable and compostable products, the main ones being; the materials that were used to produce them, how they decompose, and the residual elements after decomposition. Biodegradable products will generally break down into a few natural elements, whilst compostable products will break down and leave behind an organic material called humus. The word ‘biodegradable’ means; ‘capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms and thereby avoiding pollution.’ This generally includes products that are plant-based, animal-based or natural mineral-based. We do need to be aware that almost everything is degradable and will eventually break down. This includes plastic, which can take centuries to break down and eventually turn into microplastics and never completely disappear. Some highly processed biodegradable products may also leave behind a toxic residue. Biodegradable items such as paper and untreated wood will break down relatively quickly. Most items will typically take between 3 and 6 months.

Biodegradable items (including compostables) cannot break down safely without oxygen, the right amount of light, and bacteria. So it is really important to consider where the product is breaking down. Sending biodegradable items to landfill will not facilitate the breakdown process, as there is generally not enough bacteria, light and water to properly biodegrade. Compostable products break down quickly when placed in a compostable environment and leave behind an organic material called humus, which is nutrient rich and promotes healthy soil. Composting provides the Earth with beneficial nutrients and returns organic carbon to the soil, reducing greenhouse gases. The compostable products also don’t leave behind any toxic residue once broken down. Composting can be time consuming, but can be a beneficial way to dispose of organic material and scraps from your household waste. Composting is a great example of a ‘closed loop’ system, meaning that at the end of the process there is absolutely no waste. The end result is an amazing organic matter that can be used in your garden which the plants will love.

All compostable material is biodegradable, but not all biodegradable material is compostable.

Greenwashing is prevalent as consumers demand more from businesses, and companies adjust to becoming more environmentally friendly. Some companies are embracing this change, while others create confusion and alter their appearance, but behind the scenes very little has changed. Almost all materials degrade, but we need to be choosing ones that are natural to us and the environment. There is a price when changing to environmentally friendly materials, but the cost should be worth it for our planet. Biodegradable and compostable products are a great step in the right direction, but ultimately we need to be reducing the amount of products we buy and use. Reusable products should be our focus, as this eliminates the need to recycle altogether. Reuse and repair items, and then be conscious when purchasing new items. Choose quality, natural materials that will last, and then can be composted at the end of their life, returning to the earth where they came from.

Low-Tox

Living

BLUE LIGHT Before artificial lighting was introduced, the sun was the major source of light. We rose from our slumber when the sun would rise every morning, and then after the setting sun we would make our way back to bed at night. This is our body’s circadian rhythm, and light at nighttime throws this out of whack. Not all colours of light are the same and they each have different effects. Blue wavelengths can be beneficial during daylight hours as they have been found to boost mood, attention and reaction times, but are particularly disruptive at night. Exposure to light, especially blue light, suppresses secretion of the hormone melatonin. This hormone influences the body’s circadian rhythms, which then can affect your sleeping patterns and quality of sleep. Ongoing sleep deprivation can become a concern as it can cause issues and increased risk of depression, diabetes and cardiovascular problems. It affects both your physical and mental state. Exposure to light at nighttime is especially difficult for shift workers, but there are options available to help reduce blue light. There are also concerns with our increased use of electronics, particularly at nighttime. Here are some options to consider; -

Select warmer lights and avoiding the harsh blue light of some LED lights Avoid bright screens approx 2-3 hours before bed Create a wind down routine before bed, so your body knows when it’s time to sleep Go to bed and get up around the same time every day if possible, so your body gets into a routine - If you do work night shift or have to use screens at nighttime, consider purchasing some blue light blocking eyewear. Also using night shift mode on your phone settings will shift the colours of your display to warmer colours.

BAXTER BLUE Helping reduce digital eye strain and blue light exposure, these stylish glasses are available in a range of frames for both adults and kids. @baxterblue_ www.baxterblue.com.au

HOBART TASMANIA

On the edge of the River Derwent, sits Tasmania's capital Hobart. Once you arrive you can enjoy the slower pace of life, admiring the historic buildings sitting in the shadows of the towering Mount Wellington. Don’t confuse the relaxed pace with lack of sites to see and things to do though. There are many sites worth visiting to keep you busy, along with an amazing selection of food and restaurants to enjoy. Although the scenery is enough to enjoy alone! Here are my top picks.

MT WELLINGTON / KUNANYI Towering over the city of Hobart stands Mt Wellington at an incredible 1,271 metres above sea level. On a clear day it offers spectacular views of the greater Hobart region, Bruny Island and the beautiful wilderness areas to the South West. If you visit when the weather is cooler you may even find the summit covered in snow!

MONA MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) is Australia’s largest private museum housing a unique art collection that will leave a lasting impression. MONA also host 2 major annual festivals, the summer outdoor MOFO Festival, and the winter Dark MOFO Festival.

SALAMANCA MARKETS Held every Saturday, the famous Salamanca markets is one of Australia’s largest outdoor markets with over 300 stallholders. With an incredible selection of handmade and boutique art, woodwork, jewellery, leather goods, gourmet foods and beverages, fresh fruit and vegetables, plus so much more. While having a wander, enjoy the tunes of the buskers while inhaling the aromas of the local coffee and various cuisines on offer. A vibrant atmosphere and the perfect place to pick up a quality souvenir.

MT FIELD NATIONAL PARK Just an hour North West of Hobart you will find Mt Field National Park. This is Tasmania's first national park, and one of the best. The highlight is the incredible Russell Falls which is a casual walk through the forest, that is also wheelchair accessible. The falls are the first stop and can enjoyed from the wooden platform at the bottom, or continue the hike up the hill to see the view from the top. With various trails there is so much to explore. Why not see the Lady Barron Falls and Horseshoe Falls on the way to the summit of Mt Field, if you're up for the challenge!

TEROS The ultimate eco store with a huge range of healthy, green and fair-trade products. No matter where you are on your eco journey this store has everything you need. From reusables, body care, growing or making your own produce, children’s products, to a great range of electric bikes.
