Wlce Winter is here! For some it can be a time to slow down and enjoy the small things. A steaming cup of tea, curled up on the couch, listening to the sound of the rain. For others, they might feel energised by the cooler weather and have the motivation to get out and explore. This past year has flown by quicker than ever. It only feels like yesterday we found out what it was like to be quarantined in our own homes, and unable to socialise with our friends and families face to face. We have come to know a new and weird normal. I know how fortunate we are to have kept the worst of the virus at bay here in Australia, but I miss travelling. Exploring different landscapes, immersing yourself in different cultures and other ways of life. I love visiting new places overseas and seeing the values and traditions of other cultures.

My nomadic soul is itching to get out and explore. My husband and I love camping and getting out in nature. Our car has been set up for this purpose for a few years now, but we are currently upgrading a few things to be completely self-sufficient and off-grid. We want to be able to go off the beaten track and find those little gems along our beautiful coast. Not limited by where there is power, sealed roads or phone reception. To slow down and immerse ourselves in nature. For some, the traditional working hours and suburban life just doesn’t feel right. You have the choice to make life however you want it! You don’t have to let society’s expectations dictate your life and what you ‘should’ do. You can do life your way. You only have one life so why not make it an incredible one.

This is issue number 4 (my lucky number!) and I hope you enjoy our Winter edition. In this issue we feature the wonderful company The Other Bag, who create a range of reusable totes and crossbody bags created from 100% regenerated and recycled plastics and waste. We have Q&A’s with the founders of Nurturing Nature Cards and Amber Botanics, learning more about their businesses and what inspires and motivates them. Find out more about the toxic chemicals that can be found in traditional nail polishes and the cleaner alternatives now available. We have some great articles about Winter diffuser blends to help support you through the cooler months, a letter to your younger self and what you would say, and some magical tips on how to energetically cleanse yourself. Plus some delicious recipes, winter beauty essentials, organic sleepwear for your children and exploring the coastal paradise of Coral Bay, Western Australia. I hope you enjoy this issue, and if you have any recommendations for a future issue get in touch! Stay safe and keep warm. Much love,

Sammy

Created and Directed by Taryn Brumfitt, Embrace is a social documentary exploring the serious issue of body loathing and negative body image. With criticism coming from many sources, it delves deep into the judgement we have of ourselves and our flaws, as well as the damaging impact of media and society’s expectations. These outside sources have created an ideal image, that almost noone can live up to. Taryn encourages everyone to celebrate their flaws and unique body shape, and take ownership of their life. Don’t let it hold you back and don’t be at war with your body. Beauty is what YOU make it. Watch on Netflix

Seaspiracy Seaspiracy is a documentary about the environmental impacts of the fishing industries. Exploring the impacts of commercial fishing, plastics and waste found in our oceans, and slave labour and human rights issues. This is an eye-opening insight into the commercial fishing industry and the impacts humans are having on our environment. Raising issues such as overfishing, by-catch, and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the filmmakers delve into whether they believe sustainable fishing is an option at all. An interesting documentary to explore another issue contributing to the degradation of our environment, and the impact we as humans are having on it. Side note: As with most documentaries, especially environmental ones, watch objectively and be aware that only specific reports, research and studies will be referred to that will back up their claims. They are communicating an important message, but they shouldn’t be trying to discredit other organisations who are creating positive change. There are many issues contributing to the damage of our environment, each one with its own unique difficulties, but by creating awareness they inspire positive change within the community. Podcasts Green Dreamer The Green Dreamer Podcast is a great resource for those curious about the environment and our place within it. Cosmetics contain ingredients that can biodegrade, so to combat this these chemicals are added to extend the shelf life of the product. Parabens can assist in preventing and reducing the growth of harmful bacteria and mould, but are they just replacing one issue with another? The products may be able to stay on the shelf longer, benefitting companies who can mass produce the products. But perhaps we should be concentrating on creating small batches more often, reducing waste and ensuring the consumer is able to benefit from the nutrients and active ingredients contained within. The most commonly used six types of Parabens are methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, isopropyl-, butyl- and isobutylparaben. Also the word “Parahydroxybenzoate” is a synonym for Parabens. Cosmetics and personal care products are of most concern because you are applying them directly to your skin everyday. This causes the Parabens to build up over time and accumulate in your system.

Scientific studies suggest that Parabens can disrupt your hormones in the body, affecting your reproductive organs and fertility. They can also cause skin irritation in some people, especially those with sensitive skin. There’s currently no FDA regulation that limits the number of Parabens that are present in your beauty products and cosmetics. Due to the number of products most of us use everyday, the level of exposure to Parabens can add up quite quickly. If you are concerned about the impact of Parabens, there are a wide range of Paraben-free products that are very effective. By purchasing from brands who make small batches of products, you can receive the product quicker and benefit from the natural and organic ingredients. All products have an expiry date, so if you are going to use them straight away, you don’t need the added Parabens to extend their shelf life. Products CAN be made without these chemicals. Create a daily beauty routine that will reduce your toxic load and nourish your skin and body at the same time.

Parabens have been around since the 1920’s, and are used in a variety of leave-on and rinse-off cosmetic and body care products, particularly those with a high water content. Parabens can be found in moisturisers, face and skin cleansers, sunscreens, shaving gels, toothpaste, makeup, cosmetics and a variety of other products.

Hemp Seed Oil Hemp seed oil comes from the small seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant, and harvested by coldpressing the hemp seeds. The seeds contain a rich profile of nutrients, fatty acids, and useful bioactive compounds. It is often unrefined and is a clear green oil with a slightly nutty flavour. It’s important to note that hemp seed oil is different from cannabidiol (CBD) oil, which is an extract of the cannabis plant and utilises hemp flowers and leaves for its production. Hemp seed oil is made from the seed itself, not the flowers, and usually doesn’t contain any THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is the psychoactive component that most people are aware of. Hemp seed oil is highly nutritious and may be especially beneficial for the skin. It is rich in vitamins and omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, and can help keep the skin healthy and prevent breakouts. It nourishes and strengthens the skin, and protects it from inflammation, oxidation and other causes of ageing. It may also be helpful in the treatment of the following skin issues; -

Eczema Dermatitis Psoriasis Varicose eczema Lichen planus, an inflammatory skin condition Acne rosacea

Hemp seed oil is generally safe for most people to use, although when used topically some may experience mild irritation, so make sure you do a patch test first. Hemp seed oil has a high quantity of beneficials fats and helpful compounds making it a very nourishing oil for the skin. The fatty acid content of the oil may also be good for the brain, protecting it and allowing it to operate at its best.

10-free

3-free

5-free

7-free

What does it mean when a nail polish is 10-free? To some, keeping your nails groomed and painted can feel like a luxury, a treat that only happens when you have time, but to others it can be a regular part of your beauty routine. Whether you do it once a week, or once a year, do you know what you are putting on your nails? Your nails are made up of the same protein keratin as your hair, meaning that they can absorb whatever they are soaked in, or painted with. Your nail bead is very much alive. Most traditional nail polishes contain an assortment of ingredients which can be harmful to your health. These harmful chemicals can be inhaled or absorbed through your nail bed and into your blood stream. Have you ever wondered why every time you walk past a nail salon the smell is so intense, even outside? Let alone when you're inside and sitting there for a hour. There are more nasties in traditional nail polish than in almost any another skincare or cosmetic product, and the formulation of nail polish would read like a chemical cocktail, if you could read the ingredient list. The exact ingredient list is not usually found on the label, and if it is, it's generally too small to read. Some companies are becoming aware of the issues of traditional nail polish and are working towards creating cleaner and greener options. You may see nail polishes that are advertised as 3-free, 5-free, 7free or even up to 10-free. Explained below are some of the common toxic chemicals that are found in traditional nail polishes, and the ones companies are now trying to leave out.

There is the so-called ‘toxic trio’. Most 3-free nail polishes won’t have these 3 ingredients; - Formaldehyde - this chemical is used as a nail hardener but has had researched links to cancer. - Toluene - used in paint strippers and glue, this is a chemical that gives people a high when they sniff it. It is a known irritant to the skin, eyes and throat, and prolonged contact with the skin can cause contact dermatitis. - Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) - commonly used as a plasticiser which makes the product more flexible, but it is thought to cause reproductive issues. It has been banned in the EU. Nail polishes that are 5-free generally won’t contain the toxic trio plus these additional ingredients; - Camphor - synthetically sourced from turpentine oil which is used to strip paint. It can cause nails to dry out, become brittle and discoloured. - Formaldehyde resin - although this resin hasn’t been linked to cancer, like regular formaldehyde, it’s a skin allergen known to cause dermatitis.

7-free and up to 10-free polishes will exclude some, or all of these; - Xylene - is a compound found in petroleum products and is used as a solvent for paints and paint thinners. - Ethyl Tosylamide - a plasticiser which increases the durability and wear of the nail polish, but has been banned in the EU. - Parabens - a type of preservative widely used in cosmetics to protect against bacteria, which has been suspected of interfering with hormone function. - Benzophenone-1 - which is used as a UV absorber to protect personal care products from deterioration by absorbing, reflecting or scattering UV rays, but has been linked to breast, ovarian and prostate cancer. - Phthalates - these are produced from tar oil or coal, and are generally used to flavour a cosmetic product. (Not sure why this is needed in nail polish!?) - Styrene - often added for colour, this is a volatile organic compound associated with irritation of the skin, eyes and upper respiratory tract, and has also been considered a potential human carcinogen.

Whether or not you like to prioritise well-kept nails, it’s important to be aware of what you are using. If reducing your toxic exposure is important to you, look for companies providing safer options. But also be aware that companies leaving out the ‘toxic trio’ may just be replacing them with other nasties. Look for water-based polishes as they are safer, have fewer fumes and are non-flammable. One of my favourite companies with 10-free nail polish is from Hanami. Hanami have recently gone even ‘greener’ with their new Plant Polish formula. It's made from 82% naturally derived ingredients (such as corn, cotton, sugarcane and potato) - rather than petrochemicals. It is breathable, water permeable, 10-free (non toxic), as well as certified vegan, cruelty free, and Australian made. They also have an amazing selection of beautiful colours to choose from, so the only hard decision will be choosing which colour you want! Another great Australian company is Sienna. They have a great 10-free and a new plant-based formula in a stunning range of colours. With their distinctive glass bottles with timber lids, sustainability is at the forefront of everything they do. Their recently released formula is the world’s first micro-plastic free, aluminium free and nano particle free nail polish, and they ensure traceability from the sourcing of raw materials right through to the production and processing methods. As consumers become more aware of these chemicals, our hope is that companies start to change their formulas to ones that are not only better for us, but the environment too. As always, watch out for greenwashing and if you are unsure, companies doing the right thing (like Hanami and Sienna) will be loud and proud about how clean their nail polishes are, and have no reason to hide anything! Our hope is that Australia will eventually move towards safer options in our nail salons too. By providing spaces that are adequately ventilated, with non-toxic and cleaner options, the health and safety of not only the customers, but the workers too, will be greatly improved. Nurturing Nature Cards

Q&A Nurturing Nature Cards Q&A with Founder Leah What inspired you to start your business? Honestly, I love design and learnt when you see a design flaw to fix it. This particular design flaw was affecting my life. I love giving meaningful gifts to my friends and family, but started to stop giving greeting cards. I saw them as wasteful and expensive for a one use item. I designed my own that had more than one use, economical, plantable, recyclable and meaningful. Why is sustainability important to you?

What’s your favourite way to look after yourself? Eating plant based, using where possible natural products and getting sunshine daily!

I like to think about the future and would hate it to be bleak for my children and children's children, due to my choices today.

Currently creating?

Your favourite card in your range?

Currently reading?

YOU CAN'T ASK THAT! I love them all so much! My customer favourite by far is the Bee The Cure plantable card.

Super Attractor by Gabrielle Bernstein on Audible.

Plantable gift tags and a few new eco gift products!

Favourite travel destination? Bali, but I think my new fav will be New Zealand. Favourite quote? ‘This too shall pass’. It has got me through some tough times that's for sure!

Q&A Amber Botanics Q&A with Founders Allana & Tania What inspired you to start your business?

Your favourite product?

We started making low-tox products 5 years ago to reduce the toxins in our home. We had spent hundreds of dollars on natural deodorants that didn’t work, and mumma bear Tania was determined to find something that was safe for her daughters, and that she could be proud of. Ever since our first successful batch of deodorant, we have been replacing nasty chemicals with natural ingredients for an endless list of products, as well as continuing to make conscious choices as both a business and as consumers - and we couldn't be happier!

Our go to product is Nourish. It’s one of our natural roller blends, perfect for blemishes & acne - and it never lets us down!

Why not!? We love all of the benefits natural products have on our skin, and we know exactly what goes into it! There are so many ways you can get creative in using ingredients that nature intended us to, and it has a positive impact on the environment too!

Spending time with our pups is the best way to keep us active and outdoors (and they love it too!) Currently creating? We’re looking at creative ways to reduce waste around the home, and starting to make our own beeswax wraps. Terrariums are also a new favourite hobby because we can make really unique pieces out of recycled jars! Favourite travel destination? We like to stay local and love camping around Australia, visiting all the best spots here in our back yard! Favourite quote? “We are not about making millions, but changing a million homes.”

The Other Bag create a range of totes and crossbody bags created from 100% regenerated and recycled plastics and waste. Not only are they helping reduce and recycle waste, their bags are a compact solution ensuring you have a reusable bag on hand whenever you need. We chat to the Founders of The Other Bag, Claire and Abi, to find out more. When did you start The Other Bag? We started our research into the market in 2018 and launched the business in 2019. What inspired you to start The Other Bag? Abi and I are both lucky enough to live walking distance from Bondi Beach. We’d both become increasingly aware of the amount of plastic debris washing up on the sand and had started to become involved in plastic collections and beach cleans. We’re both from the UK originally - and had also visited there at a time when the UK were considering banning plastic bags. We started to talk about how we could marry the idea of beach waste with a reusable bag and started to research how we could bring those ideas together.

7.6 plastic bottles in every tote bag

You use two amazing recycled materials, ECONYL and CyclePET for your products. How did you discover these, and why was it important for you to use them? Lots of research! We knew that we wanted to use materials that derived from waste. That was a non negotiable for us. Just being a reusable bag was not enough. It had to have that circular element. We were absolutely thrilled to discover ECONYL - with its direct link to ocean waste. And - as we see so many plastic bottles passing through Bondi, the idea that we could make a bag that would contain seven recycled plastic bottles had real appeal. Both materials were ground breaking in their technology. Textile technology has moved on so much in the short time we have been in business and we’re excited to discover how circular fabrics evolve moving forward. What aspect of your business do you enjoy most? Abi and I are both from a creative background, so designing the bags and putting together our social media marketing is something we absolutely love. What do you find most challenging? The nuts and bolts of running a small business. Keeping our inventory up to date, our accounts on track. All of the admin that goes on behind the scenes.

What keeps you motivated and inspired?

What's your favourite way to unwind?

Our kids! We have five between us. All our children are passionate beach and ocean lovers. We want to clean and preserve what we have for them and for their children. Reusing will be second nature to them, rather than the disposable culture which we grew up in.

Hitting the beach. An ocean swim is the answer to everything. You never ever regret taking a dip.

What are you currently working on? Like many small businesses we wound back during the peak of COVID 19 and put some plans on hold. We’re now cranking up our plans to produce different styles while also reviewing where and how we produce our bags.

Your favourite quote? Abi -

“Never say I can’t, ask yourself, “How can I?” You can view and purchase The Other Bag’s collection of totes and crossbody bags online. Sign up for 15% off your first order.

Do you have a morning routine? I (Claire) am an early morning person and a runner. My absolute favourite thing to do is to run the Bondi to Bronte coastal walk as the sun rises. I have way too many photos of glorious sunrises! I’ll follow that with a dip in the ocean. It’s become essential to my physical and mental wellbeing. I don’t feel I’ve started the day properly without it.

Eentil Ols Diffusing essential oils is a natural way to purify the air in your home and can have a positive effect physically, mentally and emotionally. Using essential oils can help alleviate much of the discomfort brought on by the changing seasons. Diffusing through the home can help to support clear breathing and healthy immune function. Certain essential oils also have the ability to elevate the mood and eliminate negative emotions that can often arise through the winter months. The combinations of essential oils you can diffuse are endless. And, like each of you, they are as unique as you would like them to be. Below are some of my favourite combinations of oils to use through the winter months: - On Guard - Protective Blend - A powerful blend that contains cleansing properties and supports healthy immune and respiratory function - Easy Air - Respiratory Blend - A unique blend of oils that will calm and soothe the senses and promote feelings of clear and easy breathing - Lemon - Positive uplifting aroma that cleanses and purifies the air - Eucalyptus - Clears the mind and promotes feelings of relaxation and clear breathing - Lavender - Calming and relaxing, soothes anxious feelings and reduces tension - Peppermint - Clarifying to the mind, promotes healthy respiratory function and clear breathing

- Salt & Herb Bath - depending on the level of energy cleansing required, any Epsom salt/pink salt/sea salt can help cleanse away negative energy. Specific herbs can also be added depending on what is required (e.g Blessed Thistle for breaking curses/ hexes!). Unsure of where to start, or after a general energy cleanse, see our Luxury Herbal Bath Soaks. This cleansing method is best done once or twice a week. - Smoke Bundles or Incense - Waft the smoke around your body and request loudly or silently for it to cleanse away the negative or unwanted energy. A few favourites is Palo Santo, or specifically formulated Smoke Bundles that not only cleanse but offer positive energy but into your aura. We have a few specifically crafted smoke bundles in store, as well as Palo Santo. Best done once a week for best results. - Crystals - there are a number of crystals that you can carry or wear daily to help keep your energy cleansed. Or you can hold one and visualise it’s energy radiating the negative and unwanted energy right off you. Selenite is a great one for overall Spiritual Cleansing - Selenite Rods available in store. Best practiced daily.

H to Energticly Cleanse yrslf Spiritual cleansing aka magical hygiene is a MASSIVE part of any spiritual practice. Working with energy and magic can take a lot out of us energetically, so it’s important to practice spiritual hygiene on a weekly or even daily basis to prevent us feeling off balance and carrying around a whole heap of attached energies! Spiritual cleansing can help our soul energy stay strong, keep us grounded and in a positive mindset, and helps clear away the fog and negative energy we can pick up in our days. There’s a number of ways we can practice Spiritual Cleansing and Hygiene, sometimes one may work better than others, or when we feel heavy we may need a combination to really cleanse our aura. Here are a few of my favourite ways to practice Spiritual Cleansing. - Visualisation - Sit or lay comfortably, slow your breath, close your eyes, and visualise in your minds eye, a beautiful forest, within that forest you come across a small crystal clear pool of water that is cold and sparkling and so inviting, it also has a beautiful waterfall, jump into this pool and stand under the waterfall imagining all the negative and unwanted energy being washed away by this glorious magical water. This process is best repeated daily.

- Moon Bathing - Simply stand out in the Moonlight and visualise its powerful Luna energy cleansing away all unwanted energy. Best practiced as often as you feel, at any moon phase where the moon is visible - most potent at the time of the Full Moon. - Forest Bathing/Grounding - One of my favourite ways to not only cleanse my energy, but ground my emotions and mind. Sit or stand or walk outside in nature, best done with bare feet, and imagine being connected to the earth by thin golden threads that pulse energy back and forth, sending all your unwanted and negative energy into the earth to be transformed and receive loving stable energy in return. Best completed daily or as often as you can. - Wind - This one I love. There’s no such thing as an annoying windy day when you practice Spiritually. Stand in the wind (if safe to do so, and not in cyclonic winds!) Stand still in it, focus on the power and energy of it as it rips through you. Imagine it clearing out all stale, negative and unwanted energy, and as it does, it takes it far away from you, leaving you feeling light and refreshed.

A ler to yr ynger slf... What advice would you give your younger self as the person you are now? Here’s what I’ve learnt over the years... - Stay humble and be true to who you really are and what makes you genuinely happy, and mute the noise of others opinions and life’s expectations, for this is your life not theirs. - Be authentic, real and vulnerable as it always makes others feel comfortable to do so too. - Surrounded yourself with people who are good for your mental health and want what’s best for you without any agenda. - Stop being too nice and overly accommodating to people who take advantage of your kind nature only for their benefit. It’s okay to say no sometimes and stand up for yourself. - Spend more time in nature and with pets and children, they teach you about joy and how to live in the present moment. - Avoid comparing yourself to others, stay focused on your own life and goals, however humble. - Stop worrying and caring about what people think and overanalysing everything, especially love. If you are confused, anxious and upset early in a relationship, they ain’t the one, their everyone’s. - Do things that feed your soul but also things that scare you. Go places you’ve never been, meet people from different walks of life, expand your mind with education, embrace uncertainty, listen really listen, be happy for others achievements as your time will soon come, and treat all people the same for they too have a story. - Value and respect yourself enough and know your worth, as what’s truly meant for you will come effortlessly and stay, and what’s not will fall away. - ALWAYS trust your gut, your INTUITION knows its stuff!

CORAL BAY WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Located on the Turquoise Coast, 1200 kilometres north of Perth, is the tiny coastal town of Coral Bay. If sandy beaches and clear blue water is your idea of heaven, then this will be your paradise! Coral Bay is one spot along the World Heritage Listed Ningaloo Reef, which is the world's largest fringing reef, home to a rich and diverse range of underwater species. Offering beautiful weather all year round, this is the perfect spot to get back to nature. Explore the thriving underwater world with some snorkelling or diving, or board a tour to get up close with the graceful Manta Rays, or swim with the Whale Sharks between March and July. If you prefer to stay on top of the water, view the migrating humpback whales between June and November, or take your boat further afield and try your luck fishing outside the protected zones. And if you just want to stay dry altogether, there are some excellent 4wd tracks and sand dunes to enjoy. If the skies are clear, you will be treated to a stunning sunset over the water. Basic amenities are available, but with limited shops you are encouraged to immerse yourself in the surroundings and enjoy this beautiful part of the WA coastline.
