Edtors Letter

Wlce Welcome to our very first printed issue and issue #05 of Renewed Collective! I began this journey with our launch issue a year ago, and have loved creating this for every new season. I’m so proud of the 4 digital issues that have been out in the world for everyone to enjoy, but I now feel I need to do more. Reach more people. Have more impact. I started this journey as a digital only magazine to help reduce the impact on the environment, and creating it online was how we began. This is still so important to me, but Renewed Collective is sharing so much valuable information and I want to spread our message further. I love being able to flick through the pages of a magazine, and have always preferred a printed copy to digital. To evolve into a printed magazine though, I wasn’t willing to compromise. I searched Australia wide to find a printer that met all of my strict requirements, and I’m proud to say that the best I found was right here in my hometown Perth. Environmental Printing Co is an industry leader when it comes to environmentally friendly printing, and all printed versions of Renewed Collective are proudly printed on 100% recycled paper and use vegetablebased inks. Sustainability is extremely important to me and I choose the planet over profit. I believe small actions can contribute to bigger change, and that we can all make a difference. If you prefer digital magazines, don’t worry, Renewed Collective will still be available to download and read right away.

This is our best issue yet and we have so many wonderful contributors sharing their knowledge and wisdom. Let’s take a look at what’s inside. Our Spring issue features activewear company Evanana, who are using an innovative new fabric showing us we can sustainable and stylish when working out. We have Q&A’s with the founders of Dearest Lips, My Elixir Box and Fragrant Rituals, learning more about their businesses and what inspires and motivates them. We delve into the movement of Minimalism and try to discover the deeper meaning behind it. We have some great articles about removing toxins from your home, how nervous system regulation can help you manage stress and anxiety, how to love your reflection, and asking if you fear joy. Plus some delicious recipes, great natural makeup alternatives, and all our wonderful regular features and recommendations. I hope you enjoy this issue and if you are somewhere in Australia in lockdown, I hope this gives you time out from the craziness of the news, and inspires some positivity. Grab yourself a cup of tea (or glass of wine!) and settle in. Much love,

Sammy

Make up. It can be used like a mask, an opportunity to reinvent ourselves, give us confidence, and appear like a different person to the world outside our homes. In the security of our own homes we remove it, comfortable, our skin free and able to breathe without its mask. Traditional make up brands use a slew of ingredients that can be harmful to our health, with our skin slowly absorbing them throughout the day, and night if you’re not removing it! Our skin is our largest organ and 60% of what we put on it gets absorbed into our bloodstream. There are so many hidden dangers in cosmetics which aren’t widely publicised. Hundreds of thousands of toxic chemicals are contained within products that have never been tested for human safety. These dangerous chemicals are invisible. We rub them on our skin, inhale them and in some instances, ingest them. Unfortunately they work by the rule of innocent until proven guilty, meaning until a Government Agency bans the chemical, they continue to use it. I would rather know what’s in the products I'm using, and know that they aren’t causing harm to me, my loved ones or the environment. Make up can be wonderful, a product can enhance our features, not hide them. We are all unique and we should embrace our quirks. Learning to love who we are is a process, one that I think gets easier as we get older, but also one that doesn’t allow the media or anyone else tell us what the ideals of beauty are and aren’t. Becoming comfortable with our bodies is a freeing feeling, one that can only be felt and not easily explained. Featured here are a couple of wonderful make up brands who offer natural make up alternatives that work just as well, if not better than the traditional brands. Well worth checking out and adding to your beauty toolkit.

Perle Co Makeup Simplify your routine and heal your skin with these natural breathable products. With products called Liquid Sunshine and Golden Glow they’ll leave your skin radiant and glowing, like you’ve just come back from that Summer holiday. Together with Perle Glow, Body Glow, Perle Balls and their new Lip Glow, Perle Co’s range is easy to use on its own, or mixed together with your favourite products. Featuring non-toxic ingredients like crushed pearl powder, Vitamin E and Aloe vera, they are also cruelty free, paraben and alcohol free, making it suitable for even those with sensitive skin types. This wonderful range is perfect for those who are looking to simplify their makeup routine, and those who like a minimal makeup look, allowing their skin to breathe. Get your glow on with Perle Co. @perlecomakeup www.perlecomakeup.com.au 10.

Wondery Skin Food Australian made and owned Wondery Skin Food is here to ‘start a natural makeup revolution’. Their range of cosmetics include; - Mineral Powders - Natural Luminizer - Highlighter - Balms - Makeup Remover - Eyeliner - Brushes Offering such a diverse range of products ensures you can find a natural replacement with Wondery Skin Food for almost every cosmetic product. All natural, vegan and cruelty free, what’s not to love.

Slow by Brooke McAlary

Books

Slow, not boring, but intentional. An antidote to our fast paced, sometimes stressful way of living. Being aware of what we are told to buy to fit in to society, what we “need” to be happy, and what possessions we should have to be “successful”. Brooke shares her journey to a slower way of living and her discoveries along the way. Slow living is perfectly explained in her words; ‘A life of less stuff, less stress, fewer obligations and fewer pressures was actually a life of more - more time, more energy, more freedom, more joy, more presence, more connection and more health.’ An inspiring book encouraging you to discover what’s really important to you, and what that looks like. It doesn’t have to be drastic or extreme, but it works for you. There isn’t a finish line either, make changes slowly and your journey will evolve as time passes. Create your own definition of success and surround yourself with things and people that make you truly happy. Available instore at selected bookstores and in all major online booksellers.

Comparisonitis by Melissa Ambrosini Definition: Comparisonitis - the compulsion to compare one’s accomplishments to another’s to determine relative importance. As a society we have this urge to compare ourselves to others and essentially rate ourselves on how we’re “doing” in life. This can make us feel incredibly alone, but we’re all human and do it to some degree or another, even Melissa! The issue is when we start to associate meanings to the differences we observe, especially negative meanings. Melissa encourages us to stop worrying about what our lives look like to other people and live according to your own values and beliefs. Your life will look different to others your same age, and we’re all travelling at the pace right for us. Covering important topics like belongings and status, your self image and appearance, and also family and children. A great read on a topic that isn’t often publicly discussed, but we all suffer through, and some actionable tips to take responsibility and implement into your own life to create more ease and purpose. Available instore at selected bookstores and in all major online booksellers.

This 8 part documentary series looks at sustainability and healthy living in various countries across the world. Zac Efron is travelling with his friend and wellness expert Darin Olien exploring the alternative and innovative ways various individuals and countries are implementing more sustainable ways of living. From a closer look at Iceland’s renewable energy systems, to Paris’ public tap water system ensuring everyone has access to free clean water, and a visit to Sardinia, where the highest number of centenarians live, and challenging our views on what healthy eating and living involves. This series inspires connection, not only with the earth but with each other. There can be so much resistance to change, but we only need to take one step at a time. Challenge the systems and processes that are currently in place and look for alternative and better ways of doing things. I love that we are learning new things as Zac does. He is genuinely surprised at some of the discoveries he makes along the way, challenging his way of thinking and inspiring new and innovative ways of doing things. The more we learn the more we realise how vulnerable the earth is. We can operate and live in more sustainable ways to help ourselves, our communities and our environment, we just need to be proactive and make changes, no matter how big or small. Watch on Netflix

Toxic Beauty

Documentaries

Down to Earth with Zac Efron

Beauty and the use of beauty products is ingrained in our culture. From advertising, to our values and beliefs that have been instilled in us from a young age, affect our views and how we use these products. This documentary looks at the class action lawsuit against a reputable brand and the women who are fighting a deadly disease. The beauty industry is self-regulating, so a product will go on the market first and then regulated when there is an issue. This means that the ingredients are essentially innocent until proven guilty. Unfortunately this delay means that it might take a generation to discover the effects of these toxic chemicals. Scientists have been continually searching for the truth, and were aware of the chemicals contained in beauty products back in the 1960’s. By doing their own independent research they are discovering how these chemicals can disrupt and negatively affect our bodies, causing illness and disease. Although confronting this documentary encourages us to look at our chemical body burden and be aware that repeated exposure can maintain levels of toxins in our bodies. This includes children who can be very sensitive to exposure. Encouraging us to know what we are using on our bodies is so important. Read the labels, and if you don’t know what you're using do your research. Knowledge is power.

You can’t see them, smell them or taste them, but they can be found in hundreds of products that you could be using every day, or in the food you are eating. Rosehip Oil Rosehip oil or rosehip seed oil is derived from the rosa canina rose bush, which is grown mostly in Chile. Unlike rose oil, which is extracted from rose petals, rosehip oil is pressed from the fruit and seeds of the rose plant. Rosehip oil has a long history as a therapeutic remedy and beauty product. It has been prized since ancient times for its valuable healing benefits and ability to nourish the skin. It is full of vitamins, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids, including linoleic and linolenic acid. These help keep the cell walls strong, ensuring your skin stays hydrated and making it perfect for dry and itchy skin. Easily absorbed and non greasy, rosehip oil is high in Vitamins A and C. It also contains phenols that have been shown to have antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. Due to its moisturising and anti-inflammatory effects, rosehip oil is great for rosacea, psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis. Scientific studies have shown that rosehip oil can visibly reduce the signs of ageing, combat damage from sun exposure and reduce the appearance of scars.

Not only is it reasonably affordable and easy to use, it’s considered generally safe for all skin types. A patch test should always be performed before using to ensure you aren’t allergic to the oil. Rosehip oil can go rancid quicker than other oils, so to extend its shelf life it’s best to be kept in a cool, dark place. Though it’s slightly more expensive, cold-pressed, organic rosehip oil is recommended for purity and best results.

Minimlism Minimalism is a word that is thrown around frequently these days as people re-evaluate their lives and what is truly important to them. We delve deeper into the movement of minimalism and the meaning behind it.

Written by Sammy McAleese

Minimalism can appear on the surface to be so extreme. To get rid of most of your belongings and live in a house with minimal furniture. Have a wardrobe with only a few pieces of clothing and only a few treasured possessions to adorn your bookshelf, if you even have one, because you’re not allowed books right? Well, not exactly. Yes there are people who have sold, donated or disposed of 90% of their belongings and live with very few things, but they are definitely in the minority. Our culture here in the Western world is dominated by overconsumption. Advertising telling us that we all need the latest product or service to ‘keep up with the Joneses’, or the seasons newest fashion trend or cosmetic product to make us feel confident in our own skin. An excess of cheap clothing, gadgets or household goods, making it more affordable to throw the old ones away and replace them, rather than repair. Or keep adding to your collection you already have at home, or maybe in storage. Excess is apparent in every aspect of our lives, whether that’s working long hours, huge meals and our eating habits, or an abundance of toys for your children. Since the beginning of 2020 when our world was turned upside down, we were forced to slow down. As a collective we have never experienced anything like it before. The virus threatened our livelihoods, our security and even our lives, and could take it all away in an instant. But it allowed us time to stop, and reassess our priorities and what is truly important to us. No overseas holidays, no shopping at the malls, no going out with friends for dinner.

18.

What were the simple things that brought us joy in our everyday lives. Making healthy home cooked meals, having meaningful conversations with friends and family you’d been meaning to call for ages, reading that book that had been sitting on your bookshelf collecting dust. Minimalism is not about having less. It’s about making room for more of what matters. More experiences rather than things. It’s about changing your mindset, and living intentionally. Being aware of what you are allowing into your life, both physically and mentally. Minimalism is not a list of what you should and shouldn’t own, but physical clutter is a big part of the process because it has a big impact on stress levels. Being in a room that is crowded full of belongings can feel suffocating and overwhelming. That doesn’t include the belongings we keep in storage. Which is fine if you’re moving house and need it as a temporary solution, but the majority are used by people who have no room in their house, or for possessions they rarely use. If you don’t regularly see it, you will forget about it and what’s the point of keeping it? Australia’s self-storage industry is now worth over a billion dollars. They rely on people leaving their possessions there and forgetting about them, paying their monthly storage fees. Wouldn’t it feel better to use the item, sell it to make some extra money, or give it away to someone that would love to use it? There may be people less fortunate who can only dream of having that particular item.

We need to begin to challenge consumer habits and only invest in the essential items we need. If something breaks, can it be mended or repaired instead of being replaced? Move away from the disposable mindset and invest in the best quality item you can afford that will stand the test of time. There’s nothing good or bad about how much stuff someone has. It’s about having things that are practical or add value to our lives, and realising that we have enough. Having fewer items that have special meaning to us will make us appreciate them even more.

‘Minimalism is the intentional promoting of the things we value most and the removal of anything that distracts us from it.’ - Joshua Becker Minimalism is an invitation to examine areas of our lives that need simplifying. A chance to consider where our time, energy and attention goes. It’s about creating space and finding room to breathe, physically and mentally. To stop overcommitting because your time is precious.

Minimalism is not a movement but more of a mindset. It’s about living intentionally with what’s important to you, not anyone else. Everyone is unique, with different values and priorities, so your journey won’t be the same as someone else’s. For me, I value reading and learning, and love to read paperback books that I can hold in my hands and turn the pages as I go. Whereas reading them on a digital device might work better for some people and that’s ok, it just doesn’t give me the same joy. Take action by making small changes everyday towards the life you want. Unsubscribe from those emails you don’t want to receive anymore, go paperless, start a meditation practice, turn off notifications, buy less but invest in quality, and spend more time in nature. Find the reason why you want to simplify your life and it will always guide you to your ultimate destination.

‘Having more and more won’t solve the problem, and happiness does not lie in possession, or even relationships. The answer lies within ourselves. If we can’t find peace and happiness there, it’s not going to come from the outside.’ - Tenzin Palmo 19.

Q&A

Dearest Lips Q&A with Founder Glaiza

What inspired you to start Dearest Lips?

What’s your favourite way to look after yourself?

I was wide awake at 4am, waiting for my newborn’s next cluster feed, adding ‘one more’ lip balm to my online shopping cart. I’m a huge supporter of buying Australian handmade skincare products, and during that moment, I thought, “maybe I can share my love of natural lip balms with likeminded people out there, too?” I ended up throwing an all-nighter, researching, brainstorming ideas, drafting a business plan, goal setting, and visualising a brand that showcases my eco-conscious ethics and beliefs. I was determined to bring this idea to life as I wanted to be the stay-athome mum for my kids, whilst making an income. My kids, along with my desire for a sustainable future are my biggest inspirations. 2 weeks later, Dearest Lips was born. The fire that ignited this passion hasn’t stopped since.

I write in a gratitude journal daily to set my mind for the day. Showing gratitude and repeating positive affirmations is important for me to maintain a healthy and happy mindset and perspective on life. I also end the day reading a book in bed, as reading always makes me happy.

Why do you choose to use only natural or organic ingredients?

'The Penderwicks - A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy' This year my focus is on reading as many books as I can with 300 pages or less. As a busy and often always tired mum of 3, I find that this helps me read more books, without losing momentum.

I believe it's important to use ingredients that are ethically and sustainably sourced, and actually have a benefit. Ingredients that have not been tested or derived from animals. Ingredients that aren't harmful, that I'd confidently use on my children. Your favourite lip balm in your collection? Turkish Delight - I love everything about it. From the process to make it, which leaves a beautiful aroma in the room, to sending them out and being able to share it with others, and to using it on my own lips.

Currently creating? I have an exciting project in the works which I can't wait to reveal. It will be added to our collection, but it's not a cosmetic item... I'm working with someone who is bringing this idea to life with their creative talents. Currently reading?

Favourite travel destination? Japan! My favourite memory traveling to Japan is climbing Mt Fuji and meeting so many lovely people along the way. The food is delicious, the streets are so clean, and there is always something to do. Hopefully in the future, we can have a family holiday there. Favourite quote? "Hard times are often blessings in disguise." Dearest Lips have an award winning range of natural, vegan and ecofriendly lip balms. Shop online now. @dearestlips www.dearestlips.com.au

Q&A

My Elixir Box Q&A with Founder Amy What inspired you to start your business? I have always had a strong affinity with natural health and a belief in treating the cause of a problem rather than just the symptoms. I’ve had a number of my own personal health struggles and through those experiences found products that have made a genuine and noticeable difference to my health and wellbeing. I also love subscription boxes – a box of goodies that arrives on your door and allows you to discover new products – sign me up! My Elixir Box perfectly combined these two loves! Why is it important to you to use natural, nutritionist approved products in your boxes? The world of natural health can be confusing and a lot of products that are promoted as “healthy” are just benefiting from clever marketing. This is why all of the products in our boxes undergo a strict analysis process by our own nutritionist and naturopath. My Elixir Box eliminates the confusion, the wasted time and money and instead curates a box of goodies that are genuinely healthy and contain zero nasties. Do you have a favourite product that you’ve discovered? Oh this is a tough one! I am a massive fan of Supercharged Food “Love Your Gut” powder which is organic food-grade diatomaceous earth – it’s tasteless and mixes easily into hot or cold drinks and food. Such a great, affordable product for your gut health. I’m also a fan of a good quality medicinal teas such as MentaliTEA Collective “Snooze” tea – it’s the passionflower! So good to ensure a restful night’s sleep. What’s your favourite way to look after yourself? For me, it’s time in nature – whether that’s at the beach or on a hike in the mountains. Currently creating? I am currently curating our next box – the October “Sleep” box. This box is currently available for sale and will be dispatched on the 11th October 2021.

All Images by My Elixir Box

@myelixirbox www.myelixirbox.com.au

Currently reading? I am currently reading Sarah Wilson’s “This One Wild & Precious Life”. Favourite travel destination? I loved Nepal and I am keen to go back for another hike in the Himalayas – most likely Everest Base Camp this time! For somewhere more achievable in the current pandemic times (i.e. within Australia) – Lady Elliott Island was amazing – the best snorkelling I’ve ever done! Favourite quote? ‘You don’t have to see the whole staircase to take the first step’ – Martin Luther King Jr. If you want a little extra help with your health, check out My Elixir Box. My Elixir Box is a curated subscription box of premium natural health products. Each of their boxes focuses on a different common health concern (for example immunity, digestive health, stress, sleep, energy etc). Their next box is a “sleep” box. In the boxes, you’ll find a range of full size and sample size targeted premium health & wellness products such as health foods, superfood powders, smoothie additives, bone broth and collagen powders, tonics and medicinal teas. Pre-orders for the October “sleep” box are open now, they close on the 30th September 2021 and there are limited boxes. My Elixir Box have been so generous and provided Renewed Collective readers with 20% off your first subscription box. To get #betterhealthdelivered, use the code RENEWED20 online.

Q&A

Fragrant Rituals Q&A with Founder Zhanna

What inspired you to start your business?

Your favourite product?

My name is Zhanna and I am a natural perfumer, skincare formulator and tea blender. I have always been into the natural lifestyle and have been using natural and organic products for my skin and body. My artisan business Fragrant Rituals was born after I experienced the profound benefits of aromatherapy firsthand. Glowing skin and feeling better were things hard not to notice. It was inspiring to see how my custom handmade skincare and aromatherapy preparations helped my friends, family, and myself during challenging times in their lives both on an emotional level (helping them cope with loss and depression) and on a skin and physical health level.

I have a favourite product in every category. From the perfume collection, my favourite is Oud Duo perfume oil because it totally transforms my mood for the day. It’s very powerful, brings confidence and makes you feel unstoppable. I also really love my N13 Chypre when I want to feel energised. In my skin collection, I use all my products and alternate between them. My favourite is Geisha’s Secret face serum. It’s part of my morning ritual of massaging this beautiful dry oil into my skin.

My offerings are all about tapping into nature’s ability to bring us into a state of balance and happiness. Whether it’s a skilfully blended natural perfume, face mist, aromatherapy blend of herbal tea, you’ll find that by using Fragrant Rituals offerings you’ll not only smell amazing and have glowing skin, but also feel better and have a brighter outlook on life.

Meditation, walks or hikes in nature and drinking herbal tea (Jolly Lemon is my fav).

Why do you choose to use only natural or organic ingredients? I use natural and preferably organic ingredients including the ones I grow and wild harvest in South Australia, for many reasons. We now all know that what we put on our skin or spray on ourselves is absorbed by our bodies. In the same manner, as many people are now aware of how it is important to eat fresh and organic food, we also should seek organic and natural personal care products.

What’s your favourite way to look after yourself?

What are you currently creating? I am currently working on a totally new and exciting offering. I am perfecting my artisan skills in making 100% natural botanical incense. It is a thousand-yearold art and takes years of practice and fine tuning. I believe it is a unique offering in Australia. We are talking about real handmade incense sticks in Japanese style, not bought overseas in bulk and dipped in fragrance oil sticks. I know many are asking when it will be released, and I hope we are not far away from the first release. I am also working on a new perfume inspired by vintage violet perfumes and a new tea blend.

There is a fine line between being simply a consumer of the best and being a conscious buyer. I always strive to pick sustainably harvested ingredients. For example, although I adore the scent of Mysore Sandalwood from India (endangered), I have chosen to replace it with sustainably grown Australian Sandalwood from Western Australia. 24.

I also believe in the vibrational qualities of plants. That's why I search the world for the top quality organic ingredients for my perfumes, teas and skincare. Only the purest skillfully extracted plant essences can create outstanding products with healing benefits.

Evanana This new brand is showing us that our activewear can be both sustainable and stylish. Using recycled materials in beautiful bright colours, you will feel good inside and out. We chat to Joy, the Founder of Evanana to find out more. When did you start Evanana? I started Evanana in early 2020. Back then I was still working a corporate 9 to 5 job. Then the pandemic hit, and I started to think more about what’s really important to me, and what we can do to protect this planet. What inspired you to start Evanana? It all started back in the year of 2018, I went to the Great Barrier Reef for a short trip, and I was amazed by the beautiful coral reefs and how important they are to our ecosystem. However, while there I was told that they are terminally dying, and one of the most polluting industry causing this tragedy is the fast fashion industry. It was then I decided to combine my passion for fashion and fitness and create something environmentally friendly. Evanana was born with a clear mission - to spread positivity and encourage women to live more sustainably, actively and move in style. I wanted to get the brand out to people when they needed it the most. In the times of Covid when global warming and environmental issues are posing serious threads to the future of our planet. Why is sustainability important to you? I think practicing sustainability makes sure that we are making ethical choices and bringing a safe and liable future to everyone, and our present choices and actions have huge long term impacts on future generations. To me it's quite simple, it's just about making the more sustainable options, and slowly transitioning to a low impact lifestyle. As a business owner, I want to create long term values which can be beneficial to the environment. It is hard to make the business 100% sustainable, but we are trying our best to make better choices in every part of our supply chain. From choosing fabrics to packaging, and then to transportation. We will also donate part of our profits to volunteering organisations and charities to support their mission. I believe there will be more sustainable alternatives in the future with the development of technology. 26.

You use ECONYL, an incredible recycled product to make your activewear. Tell us why you chose to use it, and some of the amazing features. It took me around 6 months to find the performance fabrics that I’m currently obsessed with. I started by sourcing fabric swatches from different countries, and then tested them at home. I wanted to feel the materials in my hand, and test them by stretching, washing and drying. Our high techno fabrics are imported from Italy, and are made entirely from ocean and landfill waste, such as “ghost nets”, fabric scraps and industrial plastic. It can boast excellent recovery power and always the perfect muscular compression aimed at decreasing the production of lactic acid, thus boosting a faster recovery of energy. Soft and pleasant on the skin, compact and breathable, it is also highly UV protective ( UPF 50+), ultra chlorine resistant, anti-pilling and isn’t affected by sun cream and oil. What aspect of your business do you enjoy most? My favourite part of the business is the design process, because I can constantly create ideas and make positive improvements. I hate it when I don’t have pockets in my leggings, and I have nowhere to put my stuff for a morning run. I am so surging to take off my bra when I had a good sweaty workout session. I hate to wear gentle colours and I want something more powerful. Once I knew there was a group of people who hated those too, I was able to solve those problems in my own designs. So for me, the design process is the journey of exploring new ways to solve all of my pain points, and I find it quite fun and fulfilling. What do you find most challenging? The amount of tasks I need to do on a daily basis are huge, and I get overwhelmed sometimes. Like most small business owners and entrepreneurs, I want to make everything perfect and I think it can be a one person job. I usually work during the weekdays and weekends, and really long hours. And there are always ad hoc tasks that come up. These days I have been trying to find more productive ways to work and keep a good life and work balance. What keeps you motivated and inspired? I think most of my motivations come from positive and appreciative reactions from my family and friends. It took me more than a year to prepare for the Kickstarter launch, so for the last year or so, I didn’t have any products or sales. Most of the samples were tested by my friends and family members, and I will also ask my mentors in the industry for some advice. Their support of the project and love of the products are what keep me moving forward.

27.

Do you have a morning routine? Definitely. I think a great morning routine can set a positive tone to a fully energetic day. I usually wake up at around 6am. The first thing I would do is make my own bed, which ticks one task off my daily list already. Then I will hit the gym for 1 hour. Exercise plays an essential role in my life. And then I’ll come back home and make a simple breakfast and enjoy my coffee. If I have more time I will read books. As long as I complete all those tasks, I feel like I’ve already had a good day, and no matter what happens during the day, I’ll have no regrets. What’s your favourite way to move your body? For daily training, I prefer the gym, which has lots of equipment and space. I also feel like pushing myself a bit more when I see there are so many hard working people at the gym. During the weekend, I usually go for a hike or go swimming. I also like group classes like dancing and boxing, they are just so fun and it's great to catch up with friends while working out! Your favourite way to unwind? The best way for me to relax is to play with my puppy, which is the only time I would not think of my business. Exercise is a great way for me to release stress too. Your favourite quote? ‘You must be the change you wish to see in the world.’ - Mahatma Gandhi

Low-Tox

Living

Written by Chelsea Kop

5 STEPS TO CREATING A HEALTHY, LOW-TOX HOME Making low tox changes in your home doesn't have to be hard, or expensive. It's easy to get overwhelmed by the idea of detoxing your home. It seems like toxins are in every aspect of our homes - our food, personal care products, cosmetics, cleaning supplies, even our clothing... this is why it's important not to take it all on at once. We tell our clients to begin by choosing one area they would like to focus on, knowing the toxins in that area they would like to rid their home of whilst slowly phasing them out and bringing in the good. 1. Choose one area of your home to detox at a time 2. Know your toxins 3. Know your alternatives

Detoxing your living spaces Start by ridding your living space of any synthetic fragrances. You'd be surprised at how many synthetic fragrances are in our homes! We have obvious culprits like candles and air fresheners.. but even some bin liners and toilet papers are scented! Know what is synthetically scented in your home and either donate those items or remove them from your home as many of these release harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Natural ways to scent your home; • • •

4. Phase out the nasties 5. Bring in the good

• • • •

38.

Fragrant houseplants Air cleaning plants Opt for candles made from soy, coconut, rice, uncontaminated vegetable oils and beeswax that are scented with 100% pure, organic essential oils and botanicals Diffuse 100% pure, organic essential oils Place a cotton ball soaked in vanilla extract in a small saucer in your home to freshen the air Boil cinnamon sticks and cloves then simmer in water to eliminate lingering odours and freshen the air Make your own charcoal air freshener

Detoxing your kitchen Start with the food you eat. Begin buying local, organic and whole foods. If buying meat, consider whether the cattle is grain or pasture fed. This is a great way to begin clearing your diet of unwanted pesticides, preservatives, hormones and additives. Begin looking at how your food is packaged. Can you find the same item without packaging, or packaged in a sustainable way? Can this item be bought in bulk? When sourcing cookware, opt for stainless steel, ceramic or glass as these materials are sustainable and free from toxins. Detoxing your cleaning supplies There are mass amounts of harmful chemicals in cleaning products. Many of which label themselves as abrasive and warn against skin contact or inhalation. But we breathe it in once we've sprayed it, we touch the cleaned surfaces after using it and at times even place our food on the surface cleaned with these harmful chemicals. It's important to ensure what you are cleaning with is... clean! Natural ways to clean your home; • •

Source natural, plant based cleaning supplies scented with pure essential oils. Many of these have been proven to kill 99.9% of bacteria, viruses and germs. Make your own vinegar-based cleaning solution instead

Detoxing your personal care products Personal care products contain hundreds of chemicals known to be toxic. It can be quite a process, but as a start, ensure what you are using is natural and avoid the toxic twelve. Lastly... Take the detoxing process one room, and one product at a time. You can slowly phase out the nasties, or you can do a complete overhaul. Whichever method you choose, we are here to guide you.

To help you get started on your low-tox journey, Low Tox Movement have just released a Clean Shopping Guide. This guide is packed full of valuable information and will walk you through choosing safe, non-toxic products at any shop, or products you already have at home!

Written by Dr Aimee Brown

How nervous system regulation can help you manage stress and anxiety. We caught up with Holistic Chiropractor Dr Aimee Brown to learn more about the nervous system, how it works and how we can use nervous system regulation techniques to help manage stress and anxiety. Let’s dive in! Stress. It’s apart of our lives. The pandemic is a constant black cloud over our heads. On top of all the regular every day stresses that we have, like work deadlines, kids, housework and just fitting in friends and family. We are all being pulled in so many directions and it is important to understand, and recognise, that all of these things are classed as a stress to our nervous system. And whilst our nervous system isn't designed to be under constant stress, you can also use it to help manage our stress and anxiety if you know how! To understand how you can use your nervous system to help manage and regulate stress you first need to know about the nervous system itself. It has two main parts the central nervous system (CNS) made up of brain and spinal cord, and your peripheral nervous system (PNS) which is everything else including cranial nerves, spinal nerves and their roots and peripheral nerves. The PNS communicates messages from the brain and the rest of the body. The PNS has two branches. The Somatic (carries information to and from the nervous system) and the Autonomic system which regulates involuntary functions such as breathing, heart rate and hormone secretion. The Autonomic System then has two parts as well. The sympathetic system “fight and flight” located the vertebral column in the thoracic and upper lumbar region and the parasympathetic system “rest and digest” made of cranial and sacral nerves. With me so far? 40.

All of these parts are meant to work in harmony or balance. It goes into a state of increased sympathetic control in times of stress so we can run away from the figurative tigers in our lives (aka work deadlines, family stress, trying to do it all). Your heart rate increases, digestion slows, glucose (energy) is released, airways open, adrenaline is released, bladder contraction is inhibited and your pupils dilate. Which is great for a short period of time. But you then want your body to balance out into parasympathetic control. This means you are ready to rest and digest so to speak, to recover from the stress. Digestion increases, bile is secreted, bladder contracts, heart rate slows, pupils constrict to name a few.

So, with that knowledge, we can use our nervous system to help deal with stress and anxiety. Keep in mind that your brain doesn’t understand the difference between a real threat and a perceived threat, and will stay in fight and flight until the threat is perceived to have gone away. So to help deal with stress and anxiety we want to stimulate and activate the parasympathetic system. Ways to do this include; • • • • • • • • •

Breathing techniques - breathe deep and slow Water - jump into cold water, or even just splash it on your face Get into nature! Even better, barefoot in nature! Exercise, move your body! Play music that makes you happy and sing your heart out! Practise gratitude Close your eyes and picture yourself in your happy place. Laugh! Watch a silly video if you have to, but just laugh! Have a massage - suboccipital release (muscles at the top of your neck) may decrease stress levels in the body.

Many of these tips are based around activating the vagus nerve, which is the longest and largest cranial nerve so it has a big impact on your PNS function! Most importantly, remember that all these tips are general and not designed to replace individualised advice. Which means my last tip is to see a health care provider (such as a Chiropractor) who is trained in the nervous system, and can help you tailor a plan that will work for you!

Mind Body Sl

What does this mean? Well, it means if it’s not for you it will naturally fall away and if it is meant for you then it will align. Life is truly too short to play it small and to fear joy.

‘Courage is knowing what to not fear.’ - Plato Written by Krystal Martinez

Life is full of ebbs and flows; we have our moments of being euphorically motivated, then our moments where the lack of energy and motivation exists so little that you may even ponder whether you are truly unhappy. But have you ever thought to yourself tomorrow is a new day, new me! I'm so ready to start my new chapter. You know what I mean, the new goal we want to strive for. Ok, the sun is shining into the room reminding you the next 24 hours has begun. Gosh, do I have to be that ambitious today and start a health kick today. What about tomorrow? Let’s be real, this has happened to all of us regarding something we wanted to do or achieve in life. So, what is really going on here? The truth is we are resistant, due to the fear of either failing or truly reaching a level of joy. You may think to yourself, how can you fear joy? Well, when trying new things and putting ourselves out there we always think the worst. We usually think the resistance comes from a place of fear, shame, or judgment, but sometimes it comes from worthiness, not allowing ourselves to be worthy of truly embracing complete joy. It is a crazy little mind game our subconscious mind likes to play with our conscious, putting us in a stagnant whirlwind. When putting ourselves out there to absorb this joyful moment wholeheartedly, sometimes our first thought is, this can go to crap, this can be taken away from us, or we don’t deserve to feel such beautiful emotion. This mindset is a vicious cycle that allows you to always play small and never play big in life. Well, honestly the same impact from playing it small is no real difference from playing it big; there will always be something you may lose and something you may gain. Though in perspective it’s better fearing something big than pondering on “what if I played it big”, you always have something greater to gain being fully vulnerable than not. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that life will go the way it’s meant to be. 42.

So, what’s the worst that could happen? ~ You fail. Everyone fails, you can’t develop and succeed if you don’t fail! ~ You feel vulnerable. To be vulnerable shows you that you have the courage to live life to the fullest. ~ People develop an opinion of you. AND so, what?! Are they achieving your goals for you? What could happen in reality? ~ You self-develop. ~ You discover the true YOU. ~ You experience life in a way you wouldn’t have if you stayed playing it small. ~ A sense of peace begins to resonate within your soul as you are staying true to yourself. Overall, do you! Make it happen!! Be kind to yourself during the process because you deserve joy. You are beyond worthy of joy. Don’t let the “fear factor” allow you to play it small!

Le yr refletion W r i t t e n b y I m o g e n Va n H a a g e n When you catch a glance at yourself in the mirror throughout the day what do you do? Now I can't speak for everyone but I know that when I look in the mirror, my first thought is often what can I fix? I'll tidy up my hair a bit, check there's nothing in my teeth or apply some makeup. There has rarely been a time when I looked in the mirror and thought well hot damn, she's perfect. We are so judgy with ourselves, we stand in the mirror and inspect our flaws, punishing ourselves with FAD diets or militant exercise to change what we are. Well it's time for a little self-love revolution because today (and every day moving forward), we are going to look in a mirror, stare at our gorgeous faces and say I am beautiful.

Here are some of my favourite affirmations: •

My body is amazing, it deserves love.

I nourish my body, mind and soul.

I deserve happiness.

I am strong.

I am confident.

My body is a vessel for my awesomeness.

Exploring yourself through mirror work.

I am resilient.

What is mirror work? Mirror-work is a self-love technique, first introduced by Louise Hay, which prompts you and your reflection to get to know each other through a variety of positive affirmations. It has been proven to boost confidence and ignite a more positive sense of selfperception. So don't be surprised if after you've practiced consistent mirror work for a while, you find it easier to have difficult conversations, stand up for yourself and ultimately, love yourself.

I am empowered to create change in my life.

So how do I practice mirror work? It's simple - all you need is yourself, a mirror (it can be of any size but a small face mirror may be a good one to start with), and a quiet comfortable space. Now you need to look at yourself. Like, really look at yourself. Gaze into your own eyes and just be with yourself, in the present and without judgement. Try and look at yourself for at least five minutes. If you smile and laugh, that's okay, ride whichever wave your mind gives to you. If - like lots of people - you feel uncomfortable, self-critical, or even emotional, that is okay too. This will be a deeply personal and healing process and any thought you have throughout should be acknowledged and embraced. Mirror work exposes our vulnerabilities and gives us the power to truly understand the relationship we have with ourselves. Once you truly understand the relationship you have yourself, you can mould it into something more positive.

Your affirmations not only facilitate your journey to self-love, but they are tools to help you when you do feel down or self-critical. They exist to keep you grounded so you can whisper them to yourself throughout your day. Imogen is the founder of Balance Me Nutrition. If you want to master the art of conscious living, Balance Me exists to help. They can help you learn to love yourself and your relationship with food. Balance Me’s 10 week holistic mind and body transformation course guides you through a tailor-made health and nutrition journey made for your life, your body and your needs. @balance.me.holistic.nutrition www.balance-me.com.au

After around five minutes of purely gazing at yourself in the mirror, say some affirmations to yourself. The affirmations you say will be personal. You may want to break down some of the self-critical thoughts you had when looking in the mirror and relate your affirmations to that. 43.

Nurture Calmer Kids Our little people can absorb so much information, it’s important to remember that their mental health can also be affected as well as our own. Two sisters from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland are inspiring positive change and awareness about mental health in children from the ages 3 to 17. Sisters Helen and Michelle have 23 years teaching experience between them, and use that knowledge to offer face to face classes, workshops, professional development programs and trainings for children, teachers and parents, both in schools and early childhood centres. The majority of these carefully selected materials are also biodegradable, thereby reducing the impact on the environment both during the manufacturing process and at the end of their life.

Experience MindBody Lounge Serenity. Warmth. Relaxation. When I entered the MindBody Lounge for the first time, I was taken by the peacefulness and calmness I immediately felt. The warm, friendly and welcoming staff, to the well thought out layout and design of the lounge, with enough practical essentials, but minimal, careful to not overstimulate the senses.
