The run, the largest source of revenue for Special Olympics Ontario, which supports more than 22,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities, made its way through downtown Renfrew and Arnprior raising more than $1,500. Renfrew Ontario Provincial Police Detachment Commander Insp. Colin Slight, left, holds the torch as the large group leaves Low Square, with Renfrew Collegiate Intermediate School Grade 8 students: Hailey Barron, Gilienne Forrest and Erica Wales holding the banner.

2 The Renfrew Mercury - Thursday, June 15, 2017
One of the nation’s highest honours was bestowed on Connie Legg on June 6. The McNab/Braeside resident received the Governor General’s Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers at the township council meeting from Mayor Tom Peckett. Peckett said it was an honour to be requested by Governor General David Johnston to present the award. “One of the great things I enjoy about being mayor is I get to recognize and present things to various people in our community,” said Peckett to the large crowd of Legg supporters and family members. “This evening … I get to present a medal of recognition to one of our very, very deserving residents of McNab/Braeside, that being Connie Legg, who I have known for many years, who has donated of her time and herself for decades to help this community, this province and this country. She is an extremely well deserving person of this prestigious award.” After Legg thanked him for the kind words she admitted that she was disappointed she would not receive the award from the Governor General at Rideau Hall. That soon changed after a recent visit from Peckett as they discussed her volunteer work and the joys of living in a rural municipality. “It occurred to me that this is exactly where I should get my award, where I have lived for 32 years, surrounded by family and friends and celebrating the work of volunteers in our area,” said Legg. “I also doubt they would have let me speak at a fancy ceremony!” Legg has volunteered over the years at the Arnprior Figure Skating Club, L’Arche, the Arnprior and District Family Health Team and with Hospice Renfrew. She was nominated by Helen McGregor and in the award application it notes that it is a wellknown fact that Hospice Renfrew would not exist without Legg. “She is such a good volunteer, she was a founding member of the board of directors for Hospice Renfrew and she has done lots of stuff around Arnprior, McNab/Braeside and Renfrew,” said McGregor. “She is very good at all she does and she is always available for all kinds of stuff we have asked her. “She is full of life, energizing and she always helps out other people to get them going.” Jim MacKillican, was one of the founders of Hospice Renfrew along with Legg and he sponsored the nomination letter and calls her a leading light.
“It’s just great that she is being recognized in this way, it’s a Canadian recognition, but still very important she be recognized locally because this community benefited so much from what she has she done,” said MacKillican. “She is really more than a volunteer, she has been a leader and she leads by example and this has encouraged other volunteers. Her expertise in nursing and volunteerism has really been instrumental in the success of Hospice.” They credit the retired nurse as being one of the founders of Hospice Renfrew. She is the current chair and has been with the organization since it started 14 years ago and has volunteered over 6,000 hours. “Hospice is not about one person. I accept this award on behalf of all those who have spent many, many hours of volunteer time to ensure that the hospice would become a reality,” said Legg in her address to council. “Compassionate communities is a phrase used to describe communities where people out of kindness and compassion, care for one another. This is nothing new and is the way of life for people in most rural communities. McNab-Braeside is a prime example.” Legg told this newspaper she was quite shocked when she found out about the award. When I first found out I was overwhelmed because I didn’t realized I had been nominated,” said Legg. “I had to contact Hospice to find out if it was real. I was incredibly honoured. It is so nice to be recognized for doing something you love to do.” Legg said she shared the award with her husband Doug for all of his support and calls palliative care a passion. “Its such an incredibly gift to see something that is so important become so successful. I’ve got back far more than I have ever given,” said Legg. “You only get back what you put in and I think it is really important to give to your community. I have enjoyed every bit of volunteer work I have done.” She shared that the week of the recent historic floods in Renfrew County was also the same weekend as their annual Hike for Hospice. “It was cold, raining and snowing, yet 900 people showed up and together raised over $150,000 to support our Hospice. Can you believe it? Asked Legg. “We are truly blessed to live in a compassionate community. The Hospice motto of ‘Care Comfort and Compassion’ brings out the best in us all. Thank-you very much for this incredible honour.”

“This is an important day for the OPP, an important day for the community, and an important day for the staff and members of the OPP detachment.” Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Vince Hawkes was among those on hand June 9 to offer congratulations and celebrate the grand opening of the new Sherry Haaima/Metroland Renfrew OPP detachment on O’Brien Road. Police are investigating a death in Horton Township on Saturday afternoon. The June 10 discovery of a 51-year-old man was made at about 1:40 p.m., OPP said in a news release. Const. Janice Sawbridge said there are no linkages with other incidents and there is no reason to treat the Mullins Road home as a crime scene. “We are not treating it as suspicious at this point,” Sawbridge told Metroland Media.
“An autopsy will be performed as part of the investigation.” The coroner’s office and Renfrew county crime unit are continuing with the investigation to determine cause of death. The man’s name will not be released pending notification of next of kin. The scene remained taped off with an OPP cruiser outside on June 11. Investigators are asking anyone with information on this death to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. If you have information, but wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime-Stoppers at 1-800222-8477 (TIPS).

A tractor-trailer rolled into the ditch, closing part of Storyland Road June 7. Police received the call at approximately 1 p.m. and closed Storyland Road between Hwy. 17 and Bennett-Lafond Road. According to Ontario Provincial Police on scene, the driver of the tractor-trailer pulled onto the shoulder and it rolled into the ditch. The driver sustained only minor injuries. The truck was leaking diesel fuel but it was able to be contained, say officials. Horton Fire Department responded with all three of its units and nine firefighters. Fire Chief Randy Corbin said they were called in just in case the vehicle caught fire. The fire crew was staying on scene until the tractor-trailer had been lifted and removed out of the ditch, he said.

Thomsonville cemetery needs help Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
As you take a walk through Thomsonville cemetery, it’s a history lesson on not only Renfrew but Canadian pioneers. It is the final resting place for close to 6,000 people. Charlotte Whitton, the first female mayor of a Canadian city, is there. Samuel Francis, a famous axe-maker who died in 1891, has a spot. The man who founded the Children’s Aid Society, William ‘Canon’ Quartermaine, is also there, as well as the Barnet and Plaunt families, both historic clans in their own right in Renfrew. The six-acre cemetery was established in 1871, but burials have occurred there since the 1840s. The land was donated by Presbyterian minister Rev. George Thomson. The cemetery was named after the minister, although it is commonly spelled as Thompson, which is incorrect. As well, even though it is located on Thomsonhill Cemetery Street, it was originally called Thomsonville cemetery. Many locals have added the hill reference in because of the elevation. The next special occasion is Decoration Day on June 18. John Steele is the chair of the board and has a long connection with the cemetery. His grandfather was the chair in the 1950s and he was the funeral director at McPhail and Perkins for a number of years, retiring only seven years ago. “I did over 1,000 funerals in the community over the years,” said Steele. “I helped with at least 100 burials here.” The Thomsonville Cemetery is Renfrew’s public cemetery, even though it sits just outside of town in Horton. It is not run by any church. “It is run by community volunteers and it is opened to be used by anyone,” said Steele, who sits on the board along with Andy and Jane Smith, Leith Ferguson, and Marg Froats, who all volunteer for the cemetery. They are also thankful for the support of their very dedicated groundskeeper from Greengo Grass Grooming. “This is a public cemetery with people from all denominations,” said Steele. The Barnet family, who are buried there, left the cemetery a bequeathal for the maintenance and upkeep. “It was very thoughtful of them,” said Steele. “We have never touched the principal and only use the interest.” The cemetery is maintained by the annual interest from the perpetual care trust fund, which
does not meet the financial maintenance requirements of the cemetery. “We are under a real financial crunch,” said Steele. “The government doesn’t run the cemetery, volunteers do.” The board is seeking the public’s help; they can make monetary donations, donate unused plots and graves back to the cemetery, help with the maintenance of trimming, or join the board. “It is our cemetery and we need to support it financially or with your time or anyway you can,” said Steele. “Even it if is a single grave, that would be useful to someone else. There are also a number of plots still available in the newer section of the cemetery and a couple donated back in the older section.” One of the main features of the cemetery is the Barnet Mausoleum, which was recently featured in the Ontario Genealogical Society Tiffany Lepack/Metroland magazine. It is the only mausoleum in the entire One of the main features of the Thomsonville Cemetery is the Barnet Mausoleum. The mausoleum was constructed in 1917 and finished in 1918, and is 530 cubic feet. It was designed by Frank Darling, one of the leading architects in Canada at the time according to the magazine, and was constructed by McIntosh Granite Company. Robb Gorr, who wrote the historical feature on the Barnet family, describes the mausoleum as: “neoclassic style … the small mausoleum he designed for the Barnet family in Renfrew resembled a Greek temple, with its symmetrical shape, incorporating tall, fluted Ionic columns supporting a triangular pediment. The clean elegant lines and uncluttered appearance were characteristic of his style.” The outer building was built from the bestquality Stanstead grey granite. It has 16 crypts in four rows of four, and the interior was built with the best-quality Italian marble. It also has two stained-glass windows with an angel with golden hair and bronze doors. “You don’t see things like this anymore, it is remarkable,” said Steele. At the time it was finished, shortly after Alexander Barnet’s death at the age of 76, it cost his family just over $10,800, equivalent to $185,000 today. Sapsucker restaurants are now open for business Michael Runtz Nature’s Way
When it comes to nature, it is never safe to generalize. For example, one cannot say that caterpillars only eat leaves, for while most do, those of the Harvester variety eat Woolly Aphids. And while most woodpeckers exhume insects out of wood or, in the case of Northern Flickers, out of the ground, there is one species that has a very different item on its menu. As the name suggests, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers eat the sap of trees. Sapsuckers are beautiful birds. Males have a bright red cap and throat and a black bib with yellow below it. Their back sports a striking black and white pattern, one that blends in rather well with a distinctive feature often found on the trunks of White Birches. That feature is a series of rectangular holes made by the woodpeckers to access the tree’s sap. While sapsuckers enjoy the sap of a number of

Hannah, 12, earns a spot at minister’s roundtable At only 12 years of age, Hannah Visutski already boasts an impressive resume of school and community achievements, including a citizenship award from the Renfrew Legion. So it’s no surprise that she has been named one of the 60 members of the 2017-18 Minister’s Student Advisory Council (MSAC). The Grade 7 Our Lady of Fatima student is very involved in her school and the community. She simply enjoys helping others: “I’m quite passionate about poverty.” She started learning about poverty outside our community during a presentation about We Day in her Grade
4 class. Visutski was later invited to attend a WE Day event. “I told my teacher that this isn’t fair—we have all of these electronics, food, we get a free education—these people are almost starving with no good water and I wanted to do something.” From there, she helped to form a Justice Warriors club at her school. The group helps make sleeping mats out of milk bags and sells popcorn. “It feels so good just to help people,” says Visutski. She is the fourth Our Lady of Fatima student to be is representing Renfrew County at Queen’s Park since the
program was introduced eight years ago. Principal Jeannie Armstrong says the opportunity is a strong fit with Visutski’s unique focus on social justice: “I could see that spark in her. With Hannah, this is so good for her. She is such a caring, dedicated child.” MSAC celebrates student diversity and encourages appointees to speak up and take action on topics and issues that will strengthen student engagement across the province. OLF’s first council member was Kailyn Friske who was keen about active play. A couple of years later, Foster McIntyre joined MSAC with
passion for the arts. In 2013, Connor Dowdall represented students showing an interest in using technology to support learning. Although each have had different areas of interest, Armstrong says the former MSAC members have all been incredible advocates for the students of Renfrew County. She is incredibly proud of Visutski and those who went before her: “Obviously at this school we encourage student voice and the leadership of students. We want them to be global citizens and to care about their communities and to know they can make a difference — however small the difference they think they can make, they still advocate for themselves and want to be involved.” As part of the council, Visutski attended her first meeting on Thursday, tator/lector and on the parish pastoral May 4 in Toronto and will be attendcouncil. He expressed his apprecia- ing a week-long leadership camp in tion for the opportunity to lead and August. serve the board. “I am very pleased to take on the role of the next director of education for the board. I am looking forward to working with all of the board’s stakeholders and partners to continue building upon the RCCDSB’s tradition of academic excellence and commitment to student wellness and achievement in an environment that nurtures faith development,” says Perry.
Jaimie Perry new RCCDSB director The Renfrew County Catholic District School Board (RCCDSB) is extremely pleased to announce the appointment of Jaimie Perry as the new director of education beginning Sept. 15. “Jaimie Perry has extensive experience as a Catholic educator and leader,” says Dave Howard, RCCDSB chair. “The board is confident that his commitment to excellence and collaboration will ensure that we continue to provide schools to believe in.” Perry has served for the past 10 years as a superintendent of educational services. Over those years, special education, instructional staffing and labour management, safe schools, and K-12/student success have been among the many portfolios he has held. He replaces current director Michele Arbour, who will retire in September. “I have worked with Jaimie for the past 10 years and I am thrilled that he will be my successor,” said Arbour. “I know he has the experience and knowledge to effectively serve the board well in this role.” Perry began his teaching career with the RCCDSB in 1988, becoming vice-principal and department head at

In the Renfrew County case the victim exposed themselves online to the scammer, and was then threatened that a video made of the encounter would be broadcast to friends and family online unless they paid the scammer money. Champions of Renfrew Victoria and St. Francis Memorial Hospitals’ Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) journey gathered on Thursday, May 11, to celebrate accomplishments and pave the way forward to BPSO designation. cessful year in your Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) predesignation,” said Grdisa. Grace Suva, BPSO coach, RNAO representative, attended the day in person. Randy Penney, president and CEO, RVH and St. Francis Memorial Hospital, was on hand to welcome participants and express gratitude for all that staff does. “It’s only fitting to hold this event during Nursing Week,” said Penney. “I am happy to have the opportunity to publicly acknowledge the work that our nurses do. you do is not lost on me.” Penney confirmed the hospital’s support for the work being done to implement best practices, including the establishment of a Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC). “The hospital made a commitment to support the work of the RVH Patient and Family Advisory Council. The involvement of patients and family in the changes that have been brought forward is a major shift.” Guest speaker Julie Langlois, Accreditation Canada, spoke about the client and family engagement perspective related to accreditation standards and the culture shift to involving clients in their care. “It’s all about partnering with patients to provide the best care—not doing to or doing for, but doing with,” stated Langlois, also noting that patients should determine who ‘family’ is to them. One of the highlights of the day was the sharing of their personal healthcare stories by two members of the RVH PFAC, and their reasons for becoming members of the council. Candice Dick said she enjoys giving input based on her experience in the hospital and reminded those gathered that “Family, along with the patient, goes through the experience” and the “importance of listening to a patient.” Gary McFarlane noted that his reason for joining was to “help make the system friendlier for people.”

Renfrew’s Teddy Bear Picnic set for June 17 Tiffany Lepack tlepack@metroland.com
Do you or someone you know have an injured teddy bear? If so, they need to be rushed to the Bear Ambulatory Surgical Hospital (BASH) tent at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital on Saturday, June 17 from 9 a.m. to noon. This is the event’s 25th year, which usually attracts close to 200 children from nine years old and under. Hospital recreationist Roxanne Nolan has organized it since the start, after approaching senior staff, who have been very supportive. “My supervisor said, ‘go and do it,’ and here
we are, still doing it. It’s amazing — the support from the community and the physicians; that we have been able to do this for 25 years,” said Nolan. “Everyone works together as a team to make it as successful as possible.” She says the BASH tent helps children understand. “When they have to go to the hospital or in for tests, they are less frightened or intimidated,” said Nolan. “They say, ‘I did that with my bear — and if my bear can do it, I can do it.’” She said if a child is at the hospital, parents can remind them of the BASH tent. “You can relate it back to the teddy bear. ‘Remember, you took care of your bear. You can do
it.’” There are a number of different stations for kids to bring their bear or cuddly toy, similar to a child going to the hospital, such as registration; the pharmacy; the lab; and an eye, ear and teeth check. There will also be colouring, juice, cookie decorating and more. “All of the physicians are very engaging with the children and get down to their level,” said Nolan. “We try and make it fun for everyone, from getting your arm band to being X-rayed to seeing the doctor.” The event takes place at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital at 499 Raglan St. N. Just look for the Dr. John Collins examines a teddy at army tent. There is also a free draw with prizes last year’s picnic. This year the event is donated by Scott and Sons Hardware. June 17. Tommy MacAskill and guest speaker Kinga Czigany MacAskill during the Renfrew Collegiate Institute athletic banquet on June 8. She won a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in K-4 kayaking and is a two-time Hungarian kayaker of the year. She has two bronze and three silver in the IFC kayak championships. She began kayaking through club competition at the age of 10 and continued training throughout secondary school. She highlighted that athletes were required to maintain high marks during intensive training. She shared lessons she learned through competition at the international level including the importance of celebrating all manner of achievements, not only medal performances. She noted that in order to have the opportunity to win medals, it is important to have participation at all levels of a sport. Submitted

The theme “IT TAKES A TEAM” was embraced by families and friends who came from all across Renfrew County in record numbers to take part in this annual event, many hiking in memory of a loved one who had received care at the Hospice This event could not happen without the time and energy of countless volunteers. A special thank-you to the Hike for Hospice Committee, who have been working since January to get this event organized. A special thank-you to our corporate sponsors, myFM/Sterling No Frills Community Program, Dunbar Fuels and RBC for taking the lead in supporting this major fundraising event. A very special thank-you to Randy Pender and Mick Brydges of Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre for providing an amazing location for the Hike, setting up the facility for our use, and maintaining the Hiking trail. Jamie Cybulski of myFM did a superb job promoting the Hike and as usual did a great job as MC, thanking our participants and sharing his own Hospice story. This year the medic team from CFB Petawawa set up a MASH tent. This was a huge hit with the little ones, who brought teddy bears and stuffed toys for medical attention, they also had an official stuffed toy adoption program for those who didn’t have a toy! Our volunteer face painters Abigael Visinski and Alexia Bulger also helped put smiles on the faces of our little ones! Warren Sparling In loving memory of a dear Husband, Father and Grandfather, Warren William Isaac Sparling who passed away June 13, 2007. Our lives go on without you, But nothing is the same, We have to hide our heartaches, When someone speaks your name. Sad are the hearts that love you, Silent are the tears that fall, living our lives without you, Is the hardest part of all. You did so many things for us, Your heart was kind and true, And when we needed someone, We could always count on you. The special years will not return, When we were all together, but with the love within our hearts, You will walk with us forever. Our loved one is with our Saviour now, Where there is perfect rest, And there is comfort in the thought, That a loving God knows best. Until we meet again, Sadly missed and cherished Wife Florence and family

December 31, 1957 – June 15, 2016 Missing You Always You never said I’m leaving, You never said goodbye, You were gone before I knew it, And only God knows why. In life I loved you dearly, In death I love you still, In my heart I hold a place, That only you can fill. It broke my hearts to lose you, But you didn’t go alone, A part of me went with you, The day God took you home. Your loving husband, David

Sarah Jesmer Diotte
February 13, 1985 – June 16, 2001 16 YEARS OLD… AND NOW 16 YEARS GONE You left us 16 years ago, on June 16, at just 16 years old. Looking back, we can’t believe that we are surviving this journey, this heart ache, this profound loss. We miss you every time we get together – and you’re not there. We miss your laugh, your voice, your hugs, your smile, but, we watch for the yellow butterflies – and they come. We laugh till we cry at the funny memories of you. Sometimes, we call each other “ya little bugger” and we catch a glimpse of you in each other’s smiles; and sometimes, when I sit at the piano, I can hear you singing along. We’ve learned to live without you, perhaps as we would learn to live without a leg. Do we miss you every single day – without a doubt. Do the scars of the accident still hurt – at times, very, very much. Do we wish every day we had never lost you – Every day. But, sometimes we can walk so well that people can’t notice our “limp”, because we know you’re still with us… in spirit, in memory, in our hearts, in our lives. And, so sometimes, just sometimes, because we’ve learned how we can DANCE! Loving you as much as the day you left us Sue and Katie Diotte, and Granny Plager

THIS WEEK’S PUZZLE ANSWERS IN NEXT WEEKS ISSUE.
sudoku
Barsaeinrs
horoscopes
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
CLUES ACROSS

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, when others call on you to police a situation, you might be stuck between doing the right thing and taking the side of a friend. Do your best to remain impartial.

Wet start to week at Dragonfly BILL RAINBOTH, GENERAL MANAGER
Terry Stavenow, Broker t.stavenow@bell.net
Dragonfly Golf Links
Last week at Dragonfly Golf Links began with more wet weather, but finished with warmer and sunnier days toward the end of the week. Monday leagues were rained out entirely, again. Though still soaking wet from the two days of rain, Tuesday Men’s League proceeded with 11 of the 14 teams (teams are made up of six players). TF Custom Signs were the A Flight winners with the low gross score of the night, a 67. The Yolkowskie Hackers “hacked” their way to victory taking B flight. Closest to the pin winners was Butch Brown on No. 5, and Blaine Siddock on No. 7. On average, Wednesday league players have had the best weather of the year so far. Again, the weather was perfect, and The Abandoned Cubs shot an “almost perfect” gross score of 63 to take A Flight for the second week in a row. For the second week Valley Ventilation “blew away” the competition in B flight with low net score of 67. Closest to the Pin winners were Jeff MacLeod on No. 13, and Barry Pilgrim on No. 18. Eight-teen teams of four took advantage of a perfect night to be a part of Thursday Ladies League. The Red Hot Hybrids were crowned the champs of A flight with score of 5 under par. Cal Bel Gals and Seriously (?) teams tied at 6 under par in B Flight, with Seriously winning the tie breaker. Team Partee of Fore celebrated their victory

Molasses held many uses and many memories Mary Cook Memories
You could smell molasses at Briscoe’s General Store, once you got by the row of cookies in their tilted boxes at the front. There was no attempt made to shut out the smells that filled the store, and coal oil, rubber boots, maple cookies, rolls of yard goods, and of course, molasses aromas met you as soon as you opened the door. Mother didn’t want molasses that day, I would still head to the back of the store, where a pail sat on a narrow bench, with a tin ladle resting on a chipped saucer, where customers could fill little honey pails with as much molasses as they needed. And if no one was looking, I would run my finger onto the saucer, capturing some that had stayed with the ladle used by the last customer. Of course molasses filled all sorts of purposes at home. It would be poured into Mother’s homemade Boston baked beans, a recipe that was passed around Northcote, a recipe that was said to turn out the best baked beans in the entire county! All the time the beans were baking, Mother kept testing them with a spoon, and she would add just a bit more molasses, until they were exactly as she wanted them. Soon the smell of the molasses overpowered the chunk of salt pork pushed down into the beans, and all you could smell was molasses. Father never considered his pipe tobacco ready to smoke until he had added a couple spoons of molasses. He bought leafs as big as fry pans, and he had a tobacco cutter attached to a board, which he used to cut the leaves into small pieces. And then with his bare hands he would mix the molasses into the tobacco. Of course, it all had to dry out before it was fit for his pipe. So it was spread out onto a cookie sheet and put in the warmingcloset at the top of the Findlay Oval.
And there it sat, with Father running his hands through it until it was dry enough to smoke in his pipe. Sometimes Father would get a package of pipe tobacco at the store, but when he used it instead of what he mixed at home, it never smelled the same. You knew right away, there was no molasses in the bought package. It wasn’t unusual for one of us five children to come down with what was called the grippe. Of course, that wasn’t serious enough an ailment to call either Mrs. Beam or bring old Doctor Murphy out from Renfrew. So when it happened that one of us, or sometimes the whole lot of us, complained of a stomach ache, out would come the molasses. It wasn’t above Emerson to complain of what he would call “ a sickish feeling” just to be dosed with Mother’s special molasses treatment. It was a real treat, and no one complained when Mother mixed up a glass of cold water with baking soda and a spoonful of molasses. It fizzed up just like a drink from a bottle of KIK bought at Briscoe’s General Store. Whether it did anything for a sick stomach was a good question, but it was certainly a ‘cure’ we all looked forward to. And every spring, just to give us what Mother called “ a good cleanout,” we’d be treated to one of her molasses concoctions. Not one of us complained, even when the drink sent us scurrying to the outhouse, which was its main purpose. Molasses went into muffins and cookies and was drizzled over bread pudding. A special treat for me was when Mother was using molasses in one of her many dishes, and I was allowed to lick the spoon. At a time when there was little money for special treats like store-bought ice cream, or even a box of Cracker Jacks, we could always count on a taste of molasses to take the sting out of those lean years, called The Depression.
Busy day for bridge players June 7 was a very busy day at the Renfrew Bridge Club as 15-and-ahalf tables of bridge players came out for the afternoon’s play. Though several strong hands were available on the traveling boards, not all the players were able to take full advantage of their points. For example; while Board #1 was played 12 times and all North-South pairs made 12 or more tricks, only Ernie Berndt and Eric Brown realized that a slam could be bid. Well judged gentlemen! Later on Board #5, only John Goshue and John David were perceptive enough to bid and make a grand slam; very well done! To show once again, how endlessly intriguing the game can be; on
Board #19, 6 North-South pairs bid 6 NT contracts. On the 2 occasions when the contract was in the South, the bid was successful; while for the 4 contracts that rested in the North, the contract always failed. A fickle game indeed! Congratulations to the June 7th winners: North – South: 1: Arthur Ham - Phyllis Brennan 2: Ernie Berndt - Eric Brown 3: Gwen Latendresse - Diane Gilman East – West: 1: John Goshue - John David 2: Sharon Sewter - Tom Sewter 3: Ted Ambridge - Mike Nagrodski
Golden Age Activity Centre kicks off summer June 16 “I don’t know what I would do without this place.” This is a comment that is often heard at the Golden Age Activity Centre in downtown Renfrew. Seniors age 50 and over drop by to socialize between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday. The centre is hosting a Welcome Summer Fundraising Party on Friday, June 16 at the Renfrew legion from 7
to 10 p.m. Tickets are $10 and available at the centre, or from members or at the door. Musical entertainment is being donated by Highway 41, Matt Brydges and friends and Dave Hurley. It also includes a silent auction, 50/50 and door prizes. There will be a light lunch served. The centre has no permanent fund-
ing to operate and relies on fundraising efforts, donations and memberships for financial assistance. The Golden Age Activity Centre is a place where friendships are formed, a nutritious meal can be purchased, games can be played and fitness classes fill the air with laughter. The Golden Centre, as it is sometimes called, brings life to many seniors who would otherwise be sitting
at home alone without a purpose. Members have a choice of planned activities to attend during the day or they can simply drop by for a coffee and visit. Membership is $20 for the year. On June 23, the centre is celebrating its fourth anniversary with a party and a barbecue lunch at 11 a.m. followed by entertainment at 1 p.m. with The Kohlsmiths, Larry Dougherty
555-101 Legget Drive
613-270-8200
and Darrell Mooney In June, the centre will celebrate Seniors Month. Activities are planned and can be viewed on the website: renfrewgoldenage.ca, on Facebook at Golden Age Activity Centre or drop by the Centre and pick up a calendar.
