JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com Following a 5-1 vote, Renfrew council is supporting the recommendation to implement a community safety plan. Council heard a presentation on the plan by Renfrew Police Services Board chair Jeff Scott and Renfrew OPP Detachment Commander Colin Slight on June 25. The Community Safety and Well-Being Plan is a requirement under the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services' Safer Ontario Act, which came into effect March 2018. Local municipalities wouldn't need to adopt the plan until January 2021, but would need to pass a motion in their respective councils. The plan would have municipalities identify the top

stead of OPP officers, promoting collaborative partnerships between the entities. "The Community Safety and Well-Being Plan will ensure that the correct response by the correct people at the right time is put in place in the planning process," Slight said. "We already have existing strong partnerships in areas like the health sector and education sector. What we need to do is look at new and existing data and community consultations to identify what perspectives exist in our community and implement protective factors to lower the risk in our communities." Other benefits of implementing this plan include increased awareness and access to services, increased understanding of risks and vulnerable groups and significant cost benefits.

THE ISSUE: RENFREW MAY ADOPT A COMMUNITY SAFETY PLAN IN THE FUTURE LOCAL IMPACT: IF IMPLEMENTED, THE PLAN WILL PROMOTE PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN THE POLICE AND OTHER SECTORS, INCREASING AWARENESS AND ACCESS TO DIFFERENT SERVICES Each municipality that adopts this plan can implement it differently depending on what the risk factors are and how many there are. In addition, the Town of Renfrew is eligible for a grant of up to $26,250 each year for the next three years to support the plan. Failing to implement the plan or participate within an 18-month period will result in the ministry appointing a plan on behalf of council. Coun. Sandi Heins urged council to support her decision to endorse the recommendation.

"What are our plans to do this? I would be very interested in what council will do," Heins said. "Coun. (Andrew) Evans and myself have heard this four times already from the Police Services Board. I think we either need to get on the bed or decide what we're going to

STORY BEHIND THE STORY

The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services amended the Safer Ontario Act in March 2018, requiring municipalities to create and implement a community safety plan by January 2021. Many municipalities in the province have already implemented a plan, including Lanark County. Renfrew council voted to move forward with the recommendation from the Renfrew Police Services' Board during their regular council meeting.

do. I would hate to see us spend a whole other meeting on something that's pretty straightforward." Following the presentation, council made a vote on the recommendation of implementing the plan. Reeve Peter Emon was the only no vote, saying he doesn't believe the plan is adequately resourced and thinks the province should pay for it. All other members were in favour, including Mayor Don Eady, who stated that "if we don't do it now, it will be imposed on us anyways," along with mentioning the grant opportunity. The matter will be discussed in future council meetings once a first draft of the plan is written up.

CURBSIDE RECYCLING PICKUP TEMPORARILY RESTORED IN RENFREW Recycling will be picked up this week in Renfrew. "In an effort to restore Renfrew curbside recycling collection, public works crews will be out July 9 to 11 collecting curbside material," reads a July 5 Town of Renfrew press release. "We kindly ask all residents to place their blue boxes curbside prior to 7 a.m. on their regular designated day, as pickup times may be different than usual. All material is to be sorted between fibre and co-mingled, and we ask that it be contamination free." Beaumen Waste Management Systems Ltd. closed its doors the evening of June 23, creating

challenges for local municipalities that count on the business for recycling collection. More information regarding acceptable recycle material can be found on the town's website at www.renfrew.ca. "Keeping recyclable material out of the landfill has been a high priority for the town, and we are grateful to all residents for their patience, understanding and commitment to the recycling program," reads the release. "A special council meeting has been called for Tuesday July 9 to award an interim solution that will restore service to the town until a longer term solution can be found."

fans singing 'Let's Go Raptors!' I cannot say enough about our fans! 5. How did growing up in Renfrew, a small town, prepare you for where you're at now? McCullough: My family has always supported me. Knowing that they are always there behind me has given me the confidence to try and reach for the stars. Being able to enjoy this with them means the world to me. Now I can say that I am part of an NBA championship. 6. What's next...will you get to enjoy some downtime in the summer and do you have any special plans? McCullough: No down time. That is the one issue with playing into mid-June. We had to prepare for the draft, free agency, summer league, summer workouts/ player visits and before you know it next season will be here. I am looking forward to coming home for the Hospice Golf Tournament and spending a few days with the family.

we took a plane to Las Vegas on Friday and had another wonderful night celebrating the championship. 3. Your schedule must be pretty grueling, how do you keep focused and from where do you draw inspiration? McCullough: Our team kept a workman like approach to the playoffs. We were able to stay focused and on the task at hand. We never looked too far ahead and tried to stay in the moment, game by game. It was very tiring, but enjoyable to experience everything that goes into a deep playoff run. I kept telling myself to enjoy every moment as much as possible. 4. Has anything surprised you along this journey - about the players, the playoffs, your role? McCullough: The amount of media attention and people involved with the playoffs/finals was the area that surprised me. The support from our fans was unreal. Even during road games we could hear our

On the heels of the Toronto Raptors' historic 2019 NBA championship win, the Renfrew Mercury caught up with Renfrew native Scott McCullough, the long-time head athletic trainer/therapist for the Raptors. The Raptors clinched the championship in California June 13 in a game six win over the Golden State Warriors. It's the first time ever the Larry O'Brien NBA Championship Trophy has been won by a team outside the U.S. McCullough, a Renfrew Collegiate Institute alumnus, tells us about the finals, the celebration and how much family and fan support mean to him. 1. How does it feel to be part of history? McCullough: It is still a little surreal to me. I have been in the NBA for 24 years and only made it to the finals once. And to win it the only time to have made it. Wonderful!! To be a part of this experience, where we could feel the entire country behind us, makes it very special. 2. How did you celebrate the win - tell us about your night. McCullough: After the game ended, we were all on stage for the trophy presentations. The pure happiness that took over the entire organization was unbelievable. When I finally made my way back to the locker room, the celebration had already begun...you have probably seen the videos of all the champagne being sprayed. We stayed at the arena for about two hours post game. Once the locker room cleared out, we had to get all the equipment arranged and on the bus. The team met at a local restaurant and we celebrated until early in the morning. Then

ZOHR FUNERAL HOME LEGACY STRONG IN RENFREW JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com For the Zohrs, the funeral business is a family affair. The Zohr Family Funeral Home's mission is to assist and comfort families who have lost a loved one. The family legacy is currently upheld through Lorenz and Jane Zohr, their son Dustin and their grandson Grady. The Zohrs have funeral homes located in Renfrew, purchased in 2015, Eganville (2009) and Killaloe (2008). They amalgamated the three funeral homes in early 2018. The Zohrs have been in the funeral business for five generations, starting with the O'Reillys for the first two generations. M.D. 'Mick' O'Reilly, Jane's grandfather, was a carriage builder and also built cas-

kets during the Spanish influenza epidemic of 1919, becoming Eganville's undertaker. His son Leo O'Reilly obtained his funeral director's license in 1938 and took over the family business in 1945. Leo employed his daughter Jane and future son-inlaw Lorenz Zohr in the 70s. "I grew up in the business, then I married Lorenz and he decided he wanted to become a funeral director," Jane said. "He got into it because he helped my father a lot when we were first married." Dustin graduated from Humber College, the only institution in Ontario to offer a funeral director program, and received his licence in 1996. He bought Quinn Funeral Home in Renfrew in 1997 and sold it to Goulet-Renfrew in 2003. "I became a funeral di-

Jonathan Mulvihill/Torstar Dustin Zohr, right, and his son Grady are the fourth and fifth generations of funeral directors at Zohr Family Funeral Home Inc. in Renfrew, Eganville and Killaloe. rector mostly because I grew up watching my dad," Dustin said. "He would al-

ways tell me I didn't want to do it, and there were other, better jobs to do. Then I lost

a brother to crib death, and I remember my dad's boss coming to the house that

day to help my parents through that time. Ever since then, I knew this was my calling." Grady followed in his father's footsteps and graduated from Humber a few months after the Zohr family amalgamated locations. Funeral homes have certainly changed over the last 100 years but something that has not is the need for the service - Zohr Family Funeral Home continues to serve families in Renfrew County in their time of greatest need. "In our family, we've been doing it for 100 years and we've seen a lot of changes," Dustin said. "This business is a lot different now than it was even when I started 23 years ago. There's a huge difference from dayto-day operations. Families are treating death much differently."

WHY DO WE COVER COURTS? REPORTER DESMOND DEVOY SHARES HIS INSIGHTS

insideottawavalley.com

DESMOND DEVOY Column

Apart from the judge and the lawyers and bailiffs, no one really wants to be in a courtroom. Sometimes even the jury. Whether it's a civil or a criminal matter though, the arrival of a reporter in a courtroom can make already tense lawyers tense up even more. I know. I've seen it myself. By being in a courtroom, you're not catching people at their best. In fact, they're likely being judged for their worst decision ever. I've covered a case where a financial planner stole money from an elderly lady with dementia. Where a mental health nurse had sexual relations with one of his patients. Where a former nurse was charged (later found not guilty) with abusing young boys in their youth. And, worst of all, a case where a teaching assistant at a local elementary school plead guilty to possessing and viewing child pornography. That last one gave me nightmares for months and I needed to talk to a therapist afterwards. So why do we do it? Why do we cover these trials? Everyone has a right to a fair trial. The public also has a right to know. We are governed by Toronto Star guidelines that state that we "believe in freedom of expression and the public's right to know what

is happening in the courts." Heading into court, we have to hold section 2(b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (1982) about the "freedom of the press," as being equal to section 11 (d), which covers the right "to a fair and public hearing." Notice that word, public. We are not out to get anyone. We take what we do seriously. If there is a publication ban, we adhere to it (even if our lawyers are challenging it.) If charges are dropped, or added, we report on it. If we name someone upon their arrest, we have to commit to follow through until charges are dropped, or the person is convicted, or found not guilty. (As one journalism teacher told me: "No one is ever found innocent.") We do not publish the names of alleged sexual assaults, or of children in legal proceedings. In civil cases, we try to get both sides, and we are not on anyone's side, rooting for the police, or the defendant. And so while few people like to be in court, not everyone can be in court - but we can, and we are there in your stead. It's about trust. Our relationship with our readers is built on transparency, honesty and integrity. As such, we have launched a trust initiative to tell you who we are and how and why we do what we do. This article is part of that project. We welcome your questions and value your comments. Email our trust committee at trust@metroland.com As a reporter with the Perth Courier, Desmond Devoy covers a wide range of stories including crime and court news.

WHO WE ARE

LETTERS & COMMENTARY IN DEFENCE OF CLOVER To the editor: I slowly sip my hot coffee and watch out the front window as a bumblebee buzzes from flower to flower, searching for pollen and nectar to bring back to her nest. Seeing this integral part of nature taking place right on our front lawn helps me to clear my mind and begin the day. As a young family who has recently moved to Arnprior, swayed to this town by its stunning natural beauty, we hoped to make our front yard symbiotic with the ecosystem that surrounds us. A yard entirely disregarded is one thing, but an uncut lawn is another. Rather than use gasoline and time to maintain a front lawn, in front of our home we have chosen to grow multiple native wildflowers, as well as to let the small patch of "lawn" grow somewhat longer. Northern bush honeysuckle, red columbine, hoary vervain, coneflower, and bergamot all adorn our front yard -

each carefully chosen and purchased from a native plant supplier in the province. These native plants evolved within the surrounding natural environment, meaning that not only do they provide wild pollinator species with an appropriate source of nectar and pollen, they also do not require a significant level of maintenance from us, including watering. There is also no risk of any of these plants escaping and causing a detriment to the surrounding environment. Our patch of uncut lawn is mostly made up of wildflowers, including dandelions, clovers, mints, and anemones. Not only do these plants support wild pollinators, but they are also beautiful, and they produce oxygen for us to breath. We do not need to cut them down weekly. According to Statistics Canada, the use of a gas-powered lawn mower for one hour can emit the same amount of pollution as a car driven 20 to 200 miles. In one year, this can add up to the equivalent PM2.5

sherry.haaima@metroland.com facebook.com/TheRenfrewMercury @InOttValley

(particulate matter) of driving a car nearly 3300 kilometres. PM2.5 is one component of smog and is detrimental to human and environmental health. The freshly mown, military-style front lawn is slowly becoming a thing of the past, and for good reason. Rather than viewing a fresh cut lawn as "well-maintained" or "orderly" many young people see a front lawn as an unnecessary use of available land. We have been raised with the alarm bells of environmental catastrophe ringing in our ears for decades. We know the consequences for ourselves, our children, and grandchildren if we continue to be irresponsible with the land we live on. Watching out the front window I see the bumblebee breeze from coneflower to clover, and I take pride in knowing that she has been able to find some of the nectar and pollen she needs to survive in our front yard.

'LOCAL CASUALTY': ADMASTON/BROMLEY HANDLES BEAUMEN'S CLOSURE JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com

The 13th Annual Hike for Hospice Renfrew was held on Sunday, May 5, 2019, and was led by the Presley Family, who were hiking in gratitude and memory of their father, Jim. It was an exceptional day all around, with most of the activities happening outside of the Ma-te-way Activity Centre in the warm sunshine. Once again, hikers, walking or running in memory of loved ones, took the theme of “IT TAKES A TEAM” to heart. New and returning teams, besides being great Hospice Renfrew ambassadors, raised an incredible $114,250 and that amount was on Hike day alone! Overall, Hike for Hospice Renfrew raised $124,000! Every dollar raised at this year’s Hike for Hospice Renfrew goes towards the programs and services, which are completely free of charge to the residents and families we serve throughout Renfrew County. Hospice Renfrew volunteers and staff also took “IT TAKES A TEAM” theme and ran with it! They did everything from planning the entire event to making sure hikers had a lot of homemade cookies to eat! Our thanks and appreciation to everyone who helped make this year’s Hike for Hospice Renfrew such a tremendous success. You know who you are, and we’ll mention as many of you as we can here • MyFM (Renfrew and Arnprior) for support and to Jamie Cybulski, MyFM morning show host, hike committee member, Hospice Renfrew Board member, on-air promoter, Trivia night kick-off event coordinator and Hike day MC. • Our media partners and the community-at-large for promoting the Hike so well • RBC Renfrew Team for their sponsorship, and for collecting and processing donations on Hike day • Town of Renfrew, under leadership of Mayor Don Eady, for the use of Ma-te-way Activity Centre and to the Ma-te-way staff for all their help on Hike day • CFB Petawawa Field Base Hospital for once again providing great fun and entertainment to children and their special stuffed animals in the MASH tent • Chief Whiteduck of Pikwakanagan and Irvin & Carrie Sarazin, Pikwakanagan, Golden Lake for helping us kick off the Hike and for smudging • Pre-Hike Team warmer upper, Peter Boldt • Balloon animal artist, Cathy Black, and the face painting team of Madison Britt, Faith Lavoy, Gabriel Buyer, Sydney Stafford and Jana Stafford • Renfrew OPP Auxiliary Team and the Renfrew Fire Department who worked hard to ensure the safety and enjoyment of our hikers and runners • Al Utronki TV and Appliances who once again donated a 50” LED TV. This year’s winner was Jonah van Lindenberg! • The teams – families, schools, individuals (you can be a team of one in our books!) –we couldn’t have done it without you! • 2019 Hike for Hospice Renfrew sponsors and in-kind contributors – companies and organizations, which understand and appreciate what Hospice Renfrew offers their customers and clients. Even two weeks after closing, local municipalities such as Admaston/ Bromley feel the effects of Beaumen's sudden closure. During the July 4 meeting, members of council received updates regarding Beaumen's and short-term solutions for recycling. "I think this is certainly a local casualty," Admaston/Bromley Mayor Michael Donohue said. "The dynamic surrounding recyclables not just in Canada or in North America, but worldwide, has been going through some significant restructuring to the point where it's disintegrating with respect to a few materials." The township has found other local processors for metals and cardboard. They will pay a hauler to collect these materials from the sites and a rental fee on one of the bins until a permanent solution is found. Their options for plastics and paper are more limited and will take more time. The Waste Management committee met on June 28 and directed staff to have an additional township bins placed at Stone Road. An additional bin was also rented for the Douglas Transfer Station, with Osceola Landfill already having a separate bin for metals. Notice was issued to all three waste sites on July 3, asking residents to separate their metals and cans into separate bins to be sent to another processor while staff continue to investigate all options going forward. "We are moving forward with interim measures, as are all the municipalities that have been affected and impacted by the cessation of business by Beaumen's," Donohue said. "However, we do have an expectation that within the next two or three months, we will need to identify a longer-term solution for our recyclables." Beaumen Waste Management Ltd. unexpectedly announced it would be "permanently closed" on June 23. Since then, other municipalities affected, including Renfrew, Arnprior and Whitewater Region, have made short-term arrangements to continue the collection of recyclables.

A Special Thank You from Hospice Renfrew to You!

BOY INJURED IN ATV CRASH DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com A youth is in serious condition at CHEO following an ATV accident on the Algonquin Trail, on the east side of the Madawaska River in Arnprior. On Sunday, July 7, at about 7:45 p.m. Arnprior Fire Service along with police and paramedics arrived on scene, across the trail bridge where the ATV had struck a gate post in the centre of the trail. "Fire department personnel cut the lock on the gate to gain access for EMS (emergency medical services)," Deputy Fire Chief

Rick Desarmia said. "The driver of the ATV was travelling westbound on the trail was about to cross the bridge with others in a group before striking the post." The boy was transported to hospital in Arnprior before rushed to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. According to OPP Const. Brian Schutt the boy suffered "serious injuries." OPP Const. Tina Hunt said later the boy is either 13 or 14, and that the legal age to ride ATV's on trails varies. Mayor Walter Stack said he's travelled that stretch of trail many times with his grandchildren on a side-

by-side. He said it could be possible that the setting sun may have impeded visibility, causing the single vehicle accident. However, OPP said dust kicked up was a factor. "It's terribly unfortunate for the young lad and his family," Stack said. "It seems like an unfortunate accident. “That gate is a standard one used on trails across Ontario and was researched before installing. I'm sure the county and OPP are investigating and will make any changes if needed." He hasn't heard where the family lives. A few weeks ago Stack raised the issue of speeding and other violations along the Algonquin Trail in the downtown area.

SIU INVESTIGATES FATAL COLLISION NEAR ARNPRIOR The six-vehicle collision east of Arnprior that claimed two lives early Sunday afternoon is now in the hands of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU). The SIU is an independent civilian oversight agency that investigates situations that include death or injury where police were involved. According to OPP, members of both Ottawa Police

Service and OPP were in pursuit of an eastbound vehicle on Hwy. 417 as part of an investigation just before 1 p.m. July 7. After calling off the pursuit "due to safety concerns," the vehicle was then found to be traveling east in the westbound lanes where it was involved in multiple collisions near the Panmure Road exit. The 36-year-old man

who had been the police "subject of interest" after an alleged sexual assault, was killed, as was a 62year-old woman, whose vehicle was struck by the fleeing car. A 27-year-old driver and his 28-year-old male passenger were also rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries and a total of nine patients were treated by paramedics.

RCI CELEBRATES 2018-2019 GRADS JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com The 113th commencement ceremony at Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI) was hosted on June 27 at the school. Cameron Hunter delivered the valedictory address, reminiscing about the journey through high school. "When we walked into RCI as naïve freshmen, we knew everything. We were a confident group of future doctors, stock brokers, marine biologists and teachers with our whole lives ahead of us," she said. "The answers to life's questions were simple, and we were ready to take on the world." Hunter then went on to

list some of the challenges faced with her graduating class. "Academically, we have overcome obstacles with grace and resilience. Being one of the smallest classes in RCI's history, it was impossible to offer us the variety of in class courses that students have seen in the past," she said. "Instead of floundering, we adapted. We've taken courses through video call with teachers and classmates on the other side of Renfrew County. We've clicked our way through online biology labs, and stayed up far later than we would have liked submitting and resubmitting assignments. It is a new system, and not a perfect one. However, as always, it

"We may not become the people that we saw so clearly years ago, but I believe we are going to become so

much more," she said. "We are building life stories far richer than simple, one word descriptions could capture. Sure, it was nice to know everything, but it's going to be so much better to keep on learning." RCI's Ontario Scholars

MOTHER'S WORDS PROVIDE MUCH-NEEDED ENCOURAGEMENT BEING BEST POTATO PEELER IN FAMILY SPARKED CONFIDENCE, MARY COOK RECALLS MARY COOK Column

All because I couldn't work a yo-yo, Emerson called me a name that sounded like a swear word to me. But it wasn't in the little red dictionary I got for Christmas, so I figured he made it up. He wouldn't let it end there. Oh no! He rhymed off a list of things that were beyond me, and it wasn't long before I took myself to the swing in the grape arbour to think about it. I sat in the swing that morning, pushing the seat back and forth and tried to think of all the things others

were good at, and at which I was a total loss. Maybe Emerson was right. Just maybe I wasn't too bright after all. There was Cecil. He could move his ears up and down. One at a time, or both at once. He did this trick of course, when Miss Crosby was working on the blackboard, so couldn't see him. It was all we could do to keep from laughing out loud, as one after another, Cecil's ears moved up and down on his head. How often I tried to move my ears. Nothing! So that was another thing I couldn't do. I sat in the swing that day and desperately tried to think of even one thing I could do that just about everyone else

seemed to do with ease. Just about everyone at the Northcote School could whistle through their teeth! Not me! All I could do was blow out spit every time I tried. I tried my best to think of something I could do easily. Certainly I could skip rope. Then and there I decided I would put on a demonstration, just to show my hateful brother Emerson how clever I was with a skipping rope! Sadly, I didn't get the chance. Mother called me in off the swing to peel potatoes for supper. I sat at the kitchen table with the newspaper spread out before me and got right down to the job, which certainly wasn't my favourite kitchen chore. Mother was setting the table around me, she stopped to take a look, and patting me on the shoulder,

she said "You know Mary, I think you are the best potato peeler in the whole family." I sat up straighter in the chair and gave considerable thought to asking Mother if she would mind very much repeating that when Emerson came in to wash up before supper. I may not be able to move my ears, snap my fingers or whistle through my teeth, but boy, could I ever peel potatoes. I just had to figure out a way of letting my brother Emerson know I could do something better than anyone else in the family and I wasn't that hateful word he had called me when I couldn't work the yoyo. ST. JOE'S CELEBRATES 2018-2019 GRADUATES JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com It was a final farewell to the St. Joseph's Catholic High School class of 2019 as the school held its graduation ceremony on June 27. Many friends and family gathered in the St. Joe's gym to see their loved ones walk on stage and receive their diplomas. This year's valedictorian, Callissa Dunbar, delivered the address to her fellow graduates, commending the group for their achievements. "I am truly honoured that I have been chosen to speak on such an important day, but no matter how hard I try or how long I prepare, I cannot think of a way to describe the past four years with everyone," she said. "What I can say

though, is that I have never been so proud to be part of such a remarkable, intelligent group." Dunbar then commended the school for giving students an environment that is both rich in learning and inclusive. "I am truly blessed to be able to say that I am a part of the St. Joseph's community," she said. "Most of you can agree that this school gave you the grounds to be yourself, walking into St. Joe's for Grade 8 orientation was terrifying, but I soon learned that this was a school that accepted its students. No matter your race, history, your abilities, ethnicity, sexual orientation or self-identification, there was a place here at St. Joe's for you." Dunbar concluded by urging graduates not to

"The greatest fear people have is that of being themselves," she quoted. "They want to be 50 Cent or someone else. They do what everyone else does even if it doesn't fit where and who they are. But you

get nowhere that way; your energy is weak and no one pays attention to you. You're running away from the one thing that you own - what makes you different." This year's St. Joe's Ontario Scholars are: Bailey Kehoe, Liam Enright, Mitchell Hackner, Emilie

OPINION

THE SAPSUCKER CAFÉ IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS MICHAEL RUNTZ DISCUSSES SAPSUCKERS MICHAEL RUNTZ Column

Nature is full of complex relationships. For example, many early spring wildflowers produce seeds containing a protein package that ants find irresistible. Ants collect the seeds and carry them to their underground dwellings where they are stored and protected. Eventually the protein package is removed and devoured, and the seeds discarded in an underground garbage chamber where they germinate. Thus, both parties benefit: the plant's seeds get dispersed and the ants receive nutrition. Sometimes relationships are less direct. When wolves kill a deer, obviously only one party benefits from the interaction.

But when the wolves finish dining, the remaining scraps provide essential food for an array of animals including common ravens, bald eagles, American martens, and even blue jays. Yellow-bellied sapsuckers provide another example of an indirect relationship. These colourful woodpeckers dine, as their name suggests, on tree sap. They access the sap by drilling neat columns of holes through the tree's bark. The holes are wells into which the sapsuckers probe their bills, lapping up the sap with an extensible, brushtipped tongue. The sap is held in the birds' crop, a saclike swelling of the esophagus, and transported to the hungry young hidden inside a nearby nest hole. While the sapsuckers are away from their restaurant, which is often a white birch, many other organisms visit the sap wells. Recently, for two hours Britta and I were happily entertained by the comings and goings of the numerous visitors to a sapsuck-

Michael Runtz photo This Eastern Chipmunk enjoys a meal of sap courtesy of the efforts of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. er tree. The guests included blue bottle flies, which nervously moved from hole to hole, departing whenever a larger visitor,

such as a red admiral, a striking butterfly with red and black wings, arrived. One of these small, speedy butterflies appeared to be a female for it attracted much attention from a presumed male that continuously flew circles around it. Unfortunately for him, she appeared far more interested in the sweet sap than in his advances. A flash of black and white announced the arrival of a white admiral. Like its smaller relatives, it sucked sap from the wells through a long proboscis. Several times ruby-throated hummingbirds visited the café, hovering as their beak probed the wells and their extended tongue accessed the sap. One was a male, whose iridescent throat gorget flamed red when it was exposed to the sun at an appropriate angle. Most of the time it looked black as its owner contentedly fed. The highlight was none of the aforementioned. An eastern chipmunk also visited the tree,

which was punctuated with hundreds of wells, revealing years of sapsucker effort. At times its short, pink tongue was visible as it lapped sap from the wells. Suddenly, one of the red admirals took exception to the chipmunk's presence and launched an aerial assault on its head. Surprisingly, the chipmunk, which dwarfed its attacker many fold both in size and mass, acquiesced on two occasions, scampering down the tree to safety, climbing back up only when the coast looked clear. Visiting a sapsucker café is like going to a fine theatre. The difference is that admission is free, as are the liquid refreshments! The Nature email is michaelwruntz@gmail.com. Michael Runtz is a longtime columnist who teaches natural history and ornithology at Carleton University. He has worked as a naturalist in provincial and national parks, hosted the international television series Wild by Nature, and has written and/or photographically illustrated 13 books on natural history topics.
