try, she is a member of the Douglas recreation committee. She also organized Christmas packages for local families in need for more than 10 years and had a hand in assisting with other events, including the 2009 Olympic Torch Run. "Dawn firmly believes in giving back to the community and is very firmly oriented," Coun. Kevin LeGris said. "Dawn likes to work with others doing community activities and loved volunteering at her son's school and going on school trips as a parent chaperone." The Senior of the Year award went to Bev Patterson. Born and raised in Admaston/Bromley, she spent her whole life whole life living, working and volunteering in the community. She spent many years working with and around children, with 20 years on the Renfrew Junior Fair Committee and 15 years as a 4H leader. "As a high school teacher at Renfrew Collegiate Institute (RCI), then a supply after retire-

ment, Bev has touched countless young lives in the area," Coun. Bob Hall said. "She is an active member of the RCI alumni who helps people keep in touch and help organize events like this year's reunion." Kathleen Barr was named this year's Junior Citizen of the Year. Born and raised in Douglas, she was always happy to volunteer and take part in various events and community sports when not working on the farm. Her and her family's fundraising efforts became much more personally motivated when her sister Jill was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2009. Barr's other accomplishments include receiving the Lieutenant Governor's Volunteer Award and being crowned Miss Teen Eastern Ontario in 2016. "Family, friends and her community benefit from her strong work ethic, talent, beautiful kind spirit and commitment to be the very best she can be," Coun. Robert Dick said. Entertainment was provided by Sophie and Lidia Dwyer, the Helferty Family, Dennis MacPherson and Rod McCann. Lola Sine led the singing of "O'Canada" before the ceremony.

BEAUMEN'S CLOSURE CAUSES ISSUES IN RENFREW COUNTY JONATHAN MULVIHILL jmulvihill@metroland.com Recycling woes continue in Renfrew and area after the June 23 closure of Beaumen Waste Management Systems Ltd. In Renfrew, as a temporary solution, residents can take their recyclables to the landfill site free of charge. The town has made arrangements with an alternative processing plant to receive recyclable materials. Arnprior’s pickup is going ahead as scheduled after officials struck a deal with a different contractor. After more than 20 years servicing the area, Renfrewbased Beaumen Waste Management Systems Ltd. closed its doors the evening of June 23, creating challenges for local municipalities that count on the business for recycling collection. Town development and works director Mike Asselin said they were contacted over the weekend by the business, citing driver

shortages and rising costs of insurance and wages, coupled with dropping market prices in plastic, paper and cardboard as the reason for the closure. “The town is currently looking at alternative options in order to find a suitable solution while respecting contracting obligations,” Asselin said. The Town of Renfrew’s waste management committee held emergency meetings on June 25 and June 28 to discuss the implications the disruption in collection services has caused, as well as to discuss possible solutions. "Since Beaumen's dealt with both collection and processing of recyclables, we need to find contractors for both those services, which there are a limited number of nearby," Asselin said. "Current possibilities include the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre, Cascade in Ottawa as well as facilities in Kingston and Cornwall." He said Beaumen's is current-

ly in negotiations with potential new contractors to get up and running again. In the meantime, residents are urged not to put out their recyclable materials. As a temporary solution, the town has made arrangements with an alternative processing plant to receive recyclable materials. Residents are asked to bring their recyclables to the local municipal landfill site on Bruce Street and place them in the designated bins where it will be transported to the alternate facility. Beaumen’s also serviced Arnprior, Horton, Admaston/Bromley, Whitewater Region and McNab/Braeside. Whitewater Region, which includes the towns of Cobden, Beachburg, Westmeath and Ross, relied on Beaumen’s for their garbage pickup along with recycling. In response to this, the township issued a statement saying their municipal landfill site will be open to take material normally accepted at curbside at no cost while they negotiate with different contractors. Residents of Renfrew County will be provided with more information as it becomes available

MOST VULNERABLE TO SUFFER FROM FORD CUTS: LAWYER DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@metroland.com Renfrew county's most vulnerable are put at greater risk due to the "ongoing evolving threat" from the Ford government, Arnprior council learned at the June 24 meeting. Amy Scholten, an Arnprior lawyer at the non-profit Renfrew County Legal Clinic, suggested her group that provides free legal services - specializing in seniors' issues - faces an existential threat. The voluntary board that includes offices in Arnprior and Renfrew is likely to shutdown, replaced by an internet portal, saving the government $700,000 annually. "They are talking about closing our offices," Scholten said. "Our clients will have nowhere else to go so they will end up on your doorstep." She indicated the motive isn't to save tax dollars or pay down the deficit. Ontario's 72 legal aid clinics were given $45 million last year, and will see a 30 per cent cut with similar amounts over the next couple of years. Yet it is legal aid that diverts many cases from the full court system. Aside from ensuring justice for poor people, the costs of those who will languish in prison or drag down the system by representing themselves will add to the $5-billion justice system. "Costs will go up for mental health, hospitals, OPP, demand in court and other social services," Scholten said. "We get people off social assistance. This will put people back on social services."

Derek Dunn/Torstar Sheila Havey, left, Mike Emo, and Amy Scholten of Renfrew County Legal Clinic inform Arnprior council of the funding cuts faced by organizations such as theirs across Ontario. They argue it wouldn't save tax dollars but will put more vulnerable people at risk.

THE ISSUE: THE FORD GOVERNMENT IS SLASHING FUNDING TO ONTARIO'S LEGAL AID CLINICS LOCAL IMPACT: LOCAL CLINICS ARE LIKELY TO SHUT DOWN, FORCING THE DISADVANTAGED TO NAVIGATE THE JUSTICE SYSTEM ON THEIR OWN The county's legal clinic provides other services, including education to youths on their rights and responsibilities

when it comes to the landlordand-tenant act, and one-on-one legal advice. She anticipates greater strain on library services as vulnerable people search the internet for legal advice, homelessness and food-bank reliance will increase, and more. She was joined by Arnprior office vice chair Sheila Havey, who talked about the advocacy work on top of the legal work. "This is a service that is critical and cannot be centralized," Havey said. "It is going to grind the justice system to a halt, and reduce people's incomes." Mayor Walter Stack said Ontarians need to be realistic about cuts needed to bring down the $15-billion deficit. But this hits the most vulnerable and doesn't seem to save money,

STORY BEHIND THE STORY:

The Ford government's first budget, back in April, announced a 30 per cent reduction in funding to legal aid clinics. Lawyers have responded with a campaign that including taking their message to municipal councils across the province. Renfrew recently got a visit from a cyclist traveling across Canada for a good cause. Walter Reich made a pit stop at Home Hardware in Renfrew on June 24 to raise awareness and donations for Parkinson's. Reich, 70, is cycling 8,000 kilometres across Canada for people who suffer this disease and their caregivers. He says as a cycling enthusiast, he always wanted to ride across the country. "I was planning on peddling anyway so I thought, "Why not ride for a good cause?" and decided to ride for Parkinson's since "It's not spoken of very often," he said. Reich began his journey on April 12 in Tofino, B.C. on Mackenzie Beach and traveled about 5500km so far on his way to Newfoundland. During this ride, Reich has experienced all sorts of weather, including rain out

FEDERAL ELECTION

AT LEAST TWO SEEK NDP NOMINATION New Democrats in Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke are excited at the prospect of a contested nomination for the upcoming federal election. Two candidates have declared - teacher Eileen Jones-Whyte of Eganville and nuclear engineer Kurt Stoll of Petawawa - and a third is actively considering it. The federal NDP here hasn't had a contested nomination in 15 years, according to riding association president Ron Hinch, who says that the nomination date has been set for Sept. 5 for the expected October election. "It's a great sign to have so many people actively considering running," he said, mentioning that ini-

tially four people had expressed interest. "I'm very pleased both with the quality of these nomination candidates and with the fact that they represent a new generation of NDP activists." Eileen Jones-Whyte says that she is seeking the nomination because "I believe in social and climate justice. I want to play a role in improving the lot of ordinary Canadians. I want to leave the world a better place." She teaches in Eganville and has taught school for over 25 years in Ontario, Newfoundland and in Munich, Germany. "I became a teacher," she said, "because I saw education as a means to give all people a chance of

a better future. As a teacher, I have seen how education can lift people up and help them fulfil their potential. Not everyone comes to school equally advantaged. This is true of our overall society. Many can benefit from supports which overcome their obstacles and help them achieve fulfilling lives. Investments in people not only help individuals, but

create a richer and more caring society." Kurt Stoll says he is running because "at its best, the NDP was the party of workers and public sector building. They pushed for critical infrastructure when other parties insisted on austerity. Hospitals, roads, public housing, schools, pipelines, communication and electrical grids were all

built under public ownership while guaranteeing basic labour rights. "Now, populist, labourfriendly building is again required. Both the recession and climate change will be beat by building public infrastructure and by leveraging the talents of the country's most talented workers and scientists - like those in Chalk River." Eileen Jones-Whyte is active in the community as a past chair of the Training and Learning Centre of Renfrew County and as a coach, a co-founder and director of the Upper Valley Basketball Association. "Coaching is my way of helping youth learn sportsmanship and to be strong and resilient." She is an avid outdoors person who canoes, hikes, cycles, swims, skis and snowshoes. ELECTION TO INCLUDE PEOPLE'S PARTY CANDIDATE ENTREPRENAUR DAVE AINSWORTH AIMS TO GROW JOBS

DEREK DUNN derek.dunn@ metroland.com

insideottawavalley.com

Dave Ainsworth is offering a fresh approach to politics that focuses on bringing jobs for young people back to the riding of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke. Should the People's Party of Canada (PPC) candidate defeat the long-time MP, Conservative Cheryl

Gallant, the Renfrew entrepreneur will usher in an era of self-reliance. "An immediate priority is to stop the flow of jobs and young people from the county," Ainsworth said, pointing to an exodus of private sector jobs over the last decade. "I have considerable experience in business development and many ideas on solving this matter. If elected I will work with all vested interests to turn the situation around by getting things done as a team." The People's Party is new to Canada's political landscape, started by for-

Dave Ainsworth mer Conservative leadership contender Maxime Bernier last fall. It is a populist party with shades of libertarianism, though Ainsworth insists it maintains traditional conservative

values; unlike the Conservative Party of Canada that has drifted further to the centre and Liberal territory, he said. However, PPC is under attack by mainstream conservatives, former members, and others who say the focus on fiscal issues such as ending supply management and reducing government have been displaced by social issues such as nativism and xenophobia. Ainsworth dismisses the charge, saying all parties have members who can't be controlled. New parties

take time to solidify their identity. "It's nonsense. You can't control everybody coming into the party," he said. "Anybody that doesn't agree with traditional liberal values gets shamed as being mysoginists and white supremacists." Observers say PPC is less a party with lots of members than a party of one: Bernier. It is a small party, Ainsworth admits, but it plans to run candidates in all 338 ridings. "I don't know him (Bernier) personally. I hope to bring him to the riding at

outdoors with her husband, reporter Mark Jones and their two adult children, Naomi, a raft guide on the Ottawa River and Ramsay Jones, who studies at Brock University and serves in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves. Eileen studied French and German at McMaster University and education at the University of Toronto; she also served in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves. Kurt Stoll grew up in Saskatchewan on a grain farm. He completed a PhD and MASc of engineering physics at McMaster University in Hamilton and a BEng at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. He has managed mining, agriculture and nuclear projects since 2004 and has worked at CNL in Chalk River in research and development since 2018. some point," Ainsworth said. "He is a brave man who (in leaving the Conservatives) followed his principles. He has lots of charisma and is honest with everybody." The federal election is set for Oct. 21. Gallant is running. The Liberal, NDP, and Green parties have not selected candidates as of late June.

Father didn't know much about cars. The old Model T we got in a trade - gravel from our pit to fill a neighbour's culvert. My brother Everett drove it home when the deal was completed, and it took forever for Father to get behind the wheel. He cleared out the cutter and an assortment of farm tools from an outbuilding close to the house, and ever after, it was called the drive shed. When the car was brought home, Everett drove it right into the

drive shed, and there it sat for days. Father walked around it like it was a fox with the rabies, until Mother told him if he didn't start using it, she would be behind the wheel. So Father finally got around to trying to start the Model T. He took the crank out from under the front seat, and I stood at the drive shed door, pretty sure the old car would blow to bits. The crank took a spin, Father's arm flew in the air, and I was sure he was maimed for life. The German swear words came out of his mouth like bullets! But the car started and was shaking like someone with Saint Vitus' dance. His first trip out the lane was to Briscoe's General Store, with me in the back seat. After that first trip, there was no stopping Father. Then came the Saturday night when Mother was able to scrape together enough money to take us all into Renfrew to the O'Brien Theatre. It was a Hop Along Cassidy show, and we would be driving back to Northcote in the dark. Just before we got into the car for

the trip into Renfrew, Mother had a good look at the little lights on either side of the car and sent Everett to the barn for a lantern. And thank goodness she did! It was dark when we hit the Northcote Side Road, and so Mother lit the lantern. Holding it at arm's length out her side of the car, it was easy to see there was more light from the lantern than there was from the two little lamps attached to the side of the car. I said a silent thanks when we didn't meet one other car all the way back to the farm. One day Mother said Father should take the car into Thacker's Garage in Renfrew and have it

checked over. He said as long as it was running, there was no need to spend hard-earned dollars on a car that was held together with wire and binder twine. He figured one day no amount of elbow grease would get it out of the drive shed. And that would be the end of it. As if he was talking about a member of the family, he said, "If she dies, she dies." To the editor: Many thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital, the neurologist and ICU at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. Thank you to the paramedics for their quick response to transport me to the hospitals. On Jan. 5, 1982, our 45-year-old mother, Rena Landry (McNulty) had a major migraine and was hospitalized in the Ottawa Civic Hospital, diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. She was in and out of consciousness, and due to her brain being in spasm no surgery was performed. She passed away Jan. 23, 1982. On May 29, 2019 after suffering two weeks of bad headaches, I developed a major migraine and my husband, Lloyd, called an ambulance. I was conscious and talking but in pain. A CT scan was given to me at the Renfrew Victoria Hospital, showing I had a brain hemorrhage and a brain aneurysm. I was then transported to the Ottawa Civic Hospital and more

tests were done. Surgery was then performed, headed by Dr. John Sinclair, in which both he and his team had to work on the two aneurysms. The operation went well and Dr. Sinclair met with my siblings in the waiting room, at which time he informed them that these aneurysms can be hereditary and that each family member should see their family physician and be checked out. This is now being done by my siblings. I would first like to thank Dr. Sinclair and his team for the amazing surgery they performed on me. To the nurses and doctors in the Intensive Care Unit that were ever so good and patient with me. Thank you also to the following: • Dr. George Hooper for the almost daily visits I had from him, at which time any questions I asked him he would answer for me ... A very caring doctor. • Sal (physiotherapist) who was my inspiration and the first one I got up to walk with. • Rosey (physiotherapist) who tested me on my body movement. • Melissa (occupational thera-

pist), our talk and her comments on what I should do when I got home was great. • Renee (registered nurse) for all the support given to me. • Victoria (registered nurse, aunt of Dr. Anthony DeJesus of Renfrew) for taking me for my first shower the day I was discharged. Thank you to my husband Lloyd and all my family and friends for being there for me.

KUDOS TO GOOD SAMARITAN To the editor: A really nice thing happened to me recently after shopping for groceries in Renfrew, Ont. A retired school teacher and long-time resident of Shawville, I often come over to shop, visit my daughter and take my dog for a walk in the park near the river. It was while visiting the park the incident happened. I left my wallet with a significant sum of money on the park bench while watching the geese and ducks frol-

ic in the water. I panicked about a few hours later when I realized my wallet was gone. A few hours later a call from my daughter brought me some encouraging news. My wallet had been turned in to the OPP by some good Samaritan who would not reveal his or her identity. We often see the worst in today's society. Violence is common and often we are indifferent to the plight of others. How refreshing it is to see a kind and nice act from an honest person - someone who will not come forward and accept a thank you. Sure would like to thank this individual who made my stressful day end nicely.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Terry, peacefully, in Orchard View by the Mississippi, Almonte, ON. Son of the late Ned and Doris (née Hutchison) Currie, predeceased by his darling wife, Shirley (née Jones). He will be greatly missed by his brother Pat (Joan) and sister Jean, as well as his sons Bill (Rosina) and Dan (Aamina), and daughters Maureen (Dave) and Michelle (Alejandro), and his grandchildren, who all made him proud. Sadly missed by his companion, Lucille Hillier-Kean, as well as his nephews and niece, and his many friends and neighbours. Born in Cranbrook, B.C., Terry spent most of his life happily on the Currie homestead near Panmure, ON. As a young man he enjoyed baseball and hunting. He graduated from SS#3, a one-room schoolhouse on the 3rd Line, to attend Arnprior DHS, and from there to St. Patrick’s College in Ottawa. He began his career teaching in Chesley, Ontario, but soon returned to the Valley to teach French at Almonte DHS. There he made life-long friends, and had many happy years teaching and enthusiastically coaching football. That was also where he met a young fellow teacher, Shirley, whom he pursued until she happily agreed to marry. As a ‘hobby’ farmer, Terry spent many hours on the tractor, with a chainsaw, and repairing fences. His retirement from teaching did not mean a retirement from football or farming, and he spent many further seasons coaching his beloved Thunderbolts, as well as briefer stints with the Arnprior Redmen and West Carleton Wolverines. He helped found Almonte Celtfest and Almonte Alumni to support the school. Always full of life, Terry loved to dance, especially Ottawa Valley square dancing, and was an inveterate traveler who was always planning his next trip. Terry had a life-long passion for telling the story of the people of the Ottawa Valley. He was awarded the Canada 125 medal for his history of St. Peter Celestine’s church in Pakenham, Rock of Faith. He earned his M.A. in history from U. of Ottawa in 2005; the result of his studies was the book The Ottawa Valley’s Great Fire of 1870. Terry became a regular member of the Fitzroy Township Historical Society, serving as President and Past President. He often gave tours of St. Peter Celestine’s. Friends may pay their respects at C. R. Gamble Funeral Home & Chapel Inc. (127 Church St., Almonte, ON. (613-256-3313) On Monday, July 1st, from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. A funeral mass will take place at St. Peter Celestine’s Catholic Church, Pakenham, ON. Tuesday, July 2nd, at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment in Indian Hill Cemetery and a reception at the Stewart Community Centre, Pakenham. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Almonte Thunderbolts, via Thunderbolts Alumni, or the Terry Fox Foundation would be appreciated. Condolences & Tributes: www.crgamble.com

ANDERSON, Bruce Thomas (15 Aug 46 - 22 Jun 19) On Saturday, the 22nd of June 2019, Bruce Anderson passed away peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital after a long and stoic fight with kidney disease. He was born on the 15th of August, 1946 in Lethbridge, AB to William and Helen (née Patterson) Anderson (sisters: Judy [d], Janet and Jane). He received his Master of Business Administration from Stanford University in 1972, graduating with distinction. He worked principally as a civil servant (Canada Post and Royal Canadian Mint), and entrepreneur. Bruce is survived by his son Casey Anderson (Stacey Begg). Bruce was an intelligent, authentic and passionate man, who committed himself wholeheartedly to whatever struck his interest. Proudly, he was the Editor of The Gauntlet (University of Calgary’s newspaper) and won the Fraser Institute of Canada Prize in 1992 for his research into the lifecycle of coins, seeking to achieve economies for the government. He loved soccer, refereeing throughout the Ottawa Valley for over ten years, and volunteering his time as a coach and executive member of the Almonte Soccer Club. He adored the theatre, performing under the stage name “G.A. Bain” in a variety of companies in both Almonte and Ottawa, though never fully realizing his life’s ambition of playing “Matt” in Talley’s Folly. He will always be remembered for his stories, wit and generosity. He will live on in the memories of those who cherished his inimitable style, joie de vivre and hunger to “always leave them laughing”. Bruce longed to return to nature, and his ashes will be spread on camping trips in Gatineau and Alberta this summer. Those wishing to remember Bruce are requested to donate in his name to the Ottawa Gladstone Theatre or Almonte General Hospital.

THE LEGIONS OF NIGHT MICHAEL RUNTZ EXAMINES THE CREATURES WE SEE AFTER DARK MICHAEL RUNTZ Column

insideottawavalley.com

During the day, songbirds fill the air with their sweet music. Dragonflies patrol the sky, eyes scanning constantly for flying prey. Bumblebees drift from flower to flower, delivering pollen as they enjoy their sugar-rich meals. When the sun retreats at day's end, these animals vanish until its return the following morn. However, under the ensuing cloak of darkness, the woods and meadows are not without life. From forest edges, east-

ern whippoorwills repeatedly announce their name. Deeper in the woods, barred owls boom, "Who cooks for you, who cooks for you aawwl." The few bats not decimated by the dreadful white-nose fungus flutter over forest openings, their echolocation systems sweeping the night air for food. Multitudes of that food are now active at night, their myriad numbers visible only when illuminated by car headlights or after an outside light is left on overnight. These are the moths, which are not only abundant locally but also extremely diverse in appearance and size. Some are so small that a magnifier is necessary to appreciate their decorated bodies; others are so large and stunningly beautiful that any who sees one cannot help but gasp in admiration.

The remarkable diversity in moth appearances can be viewed best on walls below outdoor lights. Moths are drawn to lights because they navigate by orienting their bodies parallel to the stars and moon overhead. Of course, when their navigation systems evolved there were no human lights, which now interfere with the moths' ability to move through the dark. There are two groups of moths that attract special interest from we human admirers. One is the sphinx moth group, also known as hawk moths, for their speedy, direct flight. Their smaller hindwings are often decorated with bright colours formed into eyespots. When resting on a wall during the day, they often allow you to spread their wings apart to reveal those hidden patterns, the purpose of which is to star-

tle an attacker when they suddenly make an appearance. In order to prevent a predator from becoming habituated to a specific pattern, each sphinx moth species has unique eyespots. The one-eyed sphinx has a black spot in the centre of its blue "eye," which is surrounded by bright pink. The blinded sphinx lacks the central pupil. The twinspot sphinx has a neat line dividing each eyespot into two. The other group awarded special status are the giant silk moths. These huge moths include the most spectacular of their kind. Lunas are distinctive, with long tails streaming from their brilliant green hindwings. Polyphemus moths sport huge eyespots on their hindwings, while cecropias, the largest moths in our area, possess a beauty that defies description. Oddly, the giant silk moths lack mouth parts, so they cannot feed; the instant they emerge from their cocoons, they are

The truck is open Monday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call ahead at 613-2556766. It's opening day at Food Express in Renfrew and owner Long Tan has family helping out. The Argyle Street South truck offers Canadian and Thai, just like his first truck in Stittsville.
