Paisley is bidding for UK City of Culture 2021, a competition open to cities, large towns and urban areas run by the UK Government’s Department of Culture, Media and Sport. It sees a 12-month extravaganza of major national events in one place, but it isn’t just a big year-long party... it’s about using the spotlight to create long-lasting economic, social and cultural change. We want to harness the power of culture and all the benefits it brings to people’s lives to create a lasting legacy for the whole area—attracting visitors, energising our High Street, creating jobs and building a new sense of pride in Paisley. Paisley can win it. UK City of Culture doesn’t go to a place which is already the finished article—it goes to one which needs a boost. You can show your support for Paisley’s bid on social media by sharing your thoughts on what the town means to you and why you think we can win the title by using #Paisley2021 You can also find out more online at www.paisley2021.co.uk, where you can sign up for our newsletter.

Mrs Gillespie still gives him detention and Sarah Hargreaves still threatens to smash his face in. But people bump into him a lot in the street. Nobody ever really looks at him–they always look to the side or slightly behind. And this morning, the longer he looked in the mirror the less he could see of himself. Working in collaboration with Sanford Museum, Iowa, this Cryptic Commission for Sonica 2015 merges Lyken’s sonic responses and visualisations with Laposky’s groundbreaking 1950s artworks. Responding to a selection of six strikingly different photographic works capturing complex, rhythmic waveforms, not only are Laposky’s images a visual inspiration for Lyken’s compositions but the original process behind the creation of the artworks has been utilised to generate the accompanying visuals for the performance.

Scottish singer, songwriter, composer and essayist, Karine Polwart’s songs combine folk influences and myth with themes as diverse as Donald Trump’s corporate megalomania to Charles Darwin’s family life and the complexities of modern parenthood. Her talent for crafting unique, enduring melodies, her gift for saying just enough without overstating her case and her pure and approachable singing voice can’t fail to draw an audience in, in the same way one might lean towards a late night tale by the fireside. Gesture— expression in modern art

Born in Paisley, Alexander Wilson was a poet, artist, scientist and social commentator who, as a young man left for America and rose to become one of the towering figures in the history of the scientific study of birds.
Modernist artists of the twentieth century deliberately departed from tradition, preferring to express ideas and feelings, rather than representing real life situations. Photography could reproduce the world at the click of a shutter, allowing artists to exploit paint and other materials to paint images formed in their minds.
Known as the “Father of American Ornithology”, Wilson was the first person to attempt to illustrate and document all the birds of North America and his nine-volume American Ornithology was the first significant publication on the subject. To celebrate the 250th anniversary of Wilson’s birth, Paisley Museum is displaying some of the book-plates from Wilson’s publication to highlight the work of this pioneering scientist.
Paisley Museum’s collection contains impressive works of art which demonstrate the energy and interest of various artists. A selection of these works, many of which have been seldom displayed, are joined by loans from the estate of American artist Jon Schueler (1916-1992) during the centenary year of his birth.

Will begins to learn about the anatomy and the evolution of the piano from a text book that mashes fact and fiction to the extent one might not tell which is which.

family events
Sun 16 October
Don’t miss the latest fun filled, festive family show from Anya, Kevin and Gary, formerly of The Singing Kettle. The Funbox gang are on top of the world–literally, as they journey to the North Pole with the Funsters Fluffy and Flossie and of course everyone’s favourite cheeky dog Bonzo. Everyone is wrapped up warm for an Arctic adventure packed with songs, silliness and lots of snow. The Funbox is locked though and the keys are missing. Can you help find them? Don’t forget to wear a Christmas jumper and bring a torch to light up the night.

Paisley Arts Centre 10.30am (schools only) & 1.30pm (schools and public) £3 schools | £10 (£6 conc) + bkg fee* Suitable for ages 10 +
The Man who followed his Legs (and kept on walking) is a celebration of human resilience, following the story of two Young Scottish coalminers’ experience of World War One. The death, loss and mayhem of the trenches force Johnny to follow his legs (and keep on walking) to rediscover a reason for living. Funny, entertaining and moving, Wee Stories bring their distinctive brand of story-telling to this rich production, based on true events leading to the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Video, puppetry, music and performance vividly bring alive the enormity of this first global conflict for a new generation of young people. *see page 1 for details of our booking fees
