They were living with their own folks prior to the kids, and space was becoming tight with the second baby in tow. Their 3+1 bedroom condominium was the right size, but it needed a style makeover.

And that was exactly what the interior designer from Renozone conceptualised and crafted for the family of four.

A bevelled Philippe Starck mirror commands presence and serves as a work of art in this dining space, proving that mirrors can be oh-so versatile.

Adding drama to the living room is a stunning television console crafted from mirrored panels and velvet trimmings – an idea that was conjured up by the Missus. Even the master suite is not to be outdone. Kitted out with mirrored walls including a wardrobe that boasts reflective panels for doors, this space is sophistication personified.

Who knew colour blocking could look so chic? This Japanese restaurant, fashioned by the interior design team from Renozone, proves that an interior can boast high voltage hues, and yet exude sophistication. Launching a new restaurant isn’t always easy, but the owner knew exactly what he wanted. After all, he is practiced in the food business, and he understands the importance of the right ambience when dining. As he needed someone with a creative flair, he commissioned the interior design team from Renozone to create the perfect backdrop for the perfect meal.
The objectives were straightforward. The business owner wanted an Oriental theme for the new restaurant. Not only should it exude style, it should also provide a tranquil setting for diners to truly unwind and indulge in the delectable Japanese cuisine.
“We were really excited to take on this project. This was an opportunity for us to push our creative boundaries, and create a statement interior that might be too overwhelming for a residential space,” says one of the interior designers.
It helped that the restaurant owner was open to new ideas, as the team was bursting with suggestions. The rich and vibrant colour scheme that they were tasked to use was an integral element in bringing the Oriental style to life. However, they wanted to infuse a more enigmatic allure into the space. This is why they suggested the use of black as the base for these gorgeous hues. Thanks to the design team’s creative direction, brilliant pops of colour were tastefully interspersed with black. As it’s the first area that greets customers, the restaurant’s entrance is clearly branded with its signage, while the reception area boasts a low counter table that allows a sneak of the restaurant’s open-concept kitchen. As a diner enters the dining area, they are immersed in an atmosphere that’s inviting and cosy. Patterned cutout panels reminiscent of traditional Asian-style interiors add visual interest to vividly hued walls. Gracing the ceilings, custom-made chandeliers heighten the luxurious factor in the dining area. Pretty Japanese-inspired bags and bento boxes are also brought to focus on shelves with brightly coloured backdrops.
Apart from aesthetics, functionality is key to keep customers coming back for more. The team from Renozone ensured the dining tables were spread out comfortably, and made the space even more alluring with the strategic use of lighting. The combination of colour, space planning and lighting come together to create an ambience made for a gourmet culinary experience.
Although the furniture is understated, the interior designers still dedicated attention to each piece. The edges of the table drawers were trimmed with a bright splash of colour for a touch of drama, and to match the walls.

Angular-shaped ceilings and asymmetrical shelves might sound like a renovation project gone askew, but this apartment proves that the results can be spectacular even if you don’t play it safe. When Kenny and his wife, Serene, first sat down to discuss the design of their newly acquired BTO flat with Sam from NID Design Studio, their only request was for the five-room apartment to exude a premium condominium ambience. Despite being friends with the interior design expert, the couple sought his help because they ran through his portfolio and liked what they saw. Yet, they were blown away by the ideas that he presented on his 3D drawings of their home.

“The living room ceiling is definitely the highlight of the house,” replies Serene when asked which her favourite feature is. “It’s unconventional yet stylish,” she adds. The ceiling was designed to elicit similar responses from onlookers, but it doesn’t simply serve a decorative purpose. It was also constructed so the wirings for the cove and down lights could be concealed.
To ensure a sense of consistency, similar geometric shapes are used as the main design element in the living space. Tinted mirror panels are added in the mix of forms that constitute the feature wall at the dining area, extending along the home’s walkway. Boasting a visually arresting play of oblique lines, the showcase and storage cabinet in the living room is a definite standout.

The study wasn’t part of the flat’s original floor plan. As fiveroom BTO flats typically boast a larger living room, Kenny decided to turn that extra space into a study. Instead of constructing a conventional room made of brick and mortar, Sam suggested erecting glass partitions instead. This demarcates the study from the living room, yet allows light to flow freely across the space. “I can now keep an eye on my kids in the living room while I’m doing work,” says Kenny. Even after creating a new space for the study, the living room still appears spacious – all thanks to Sam’s resourcefulness.

Scandinavian interiors are well loved for their simplicity, understated elegance, and the abundance of open space. The team from Dzign Haus proved that they have a firm understanding of this Nordic theme by spearheading two such projects with finesse. Brick walls form the necessary ingredient for a Scandinavian-driven interior, and that was exactly what the homeowners requested from Melvin Ang, the interior designer from Dzign Haus. But Melvin pushed the envelope, and proposed subway tiles crafted from plywood instead. Not only do they boast clean lines that are oh-so typically Scandi, they’re really easy to clean too.

“Melvin really helped to maximise the space in our house. As a result, it feels a lot more cohesive,� says Faeez. One of the suggestions that the couple truly liked was the repositioning of the dining table. Traditionally, the living room is the first that greets visitors when they enter a house. In this case, the design expert recommended the dining area to be positioned near the main entrance instead. This change certainly makes complete sense, as the door to the kitchen is located directly behind the dining table. This makes it easy for the couple to entertain and host dinner parties.
An all-white interior might appear too stark, which is why wooden accents are must-haves for infusing warmth in a Scandinavianthemed home. Even the ceiling lighting boasts an earthy tone.

Their abode’s standout features, though, had to be the shoe cabinet that comes complete with a lighting fixture, as well as a state-of-the-art home automation system. The full-length storage compartment that lies seamlessly against the white walls hides the couple’s vast collection of footwear; a necessity as it’s sited right next to the dining space. Thanks to Melvin’s suggestion to equip the home with Control4, a system by Digital Homes, everyday living is now a breeze. Their television, air-conditioning and other electronic appliances can now be controlled effortlessly using an application on their smartphones and tablets.

Faced with a blank canvas, the couple was initially apprehensive when it came to space planning. Apart from fitting in a new study area, they wanted a dining area and an entertainment room within their living room. Furthermore, the pair loved the airy vibe of a traditional Scandinavian home, and they wanted a similar openplan concept for their abode. Kelvin Lee, the design expert that they enlisted, took this into consideration, and constructed a low wall instead of building a room to demarcate the living room from the new study. This allows light to bounce freely around – to encourage the feeling of spaciousness.

To ensure that the house doesn’t appear cluttered, Kelvin came up with smart storage solutions for the Ongs. Compartments to house the family’s shoe collections were incorporated into the bench at the dining area, while a display cabinet on top of the shoe rack acts as a divider between the entry foyer and the dining space. Even the television console is built with a dual purpose. It extends up to the ceiling to create a cove light feature with a single stroke design. Swathed in a pale colour palette, the heart of the home is a breath of fresh air with its combination of wood grain and polished laminates.

Hi Miss Thio! Please describe your home’s theme. It’s a modern take on the classic look. I wanted a style that’s clean, uncluttered, and full of light. What inspired this style? After doing countless online research, I realised that I was particularly drawn to classic European interiors. I travel often to European cities, in particular Paris, for work. I just didn’t know how much these places influenced me until now. How was the design and planning process like? When it comes to making decisions, it’s tough when there’s nobody you could discuss and talk to. But I had a goal in mind, and that was to come home to a place where my son, two dogs, and I could call our own. Which part of the house are you most proud of? A lot of work went into the kitchen, and I’m happy it turned out exactly the way I wanted it to be. Kevin was a great help! I wanted to clad the entire kitchen walls with subway tiles, but he advised me to use them as accents instead. On the other hand, I am absolutely in love with my bathroom. Whenever I have time for myself, I’ll unwind by soaking in the tub, and the day’s weariness will just melt away.

I’m glad that I trusted my gut, and stuck with my decision. My bathtub is extra special because it’s a movable one. Credits go to Kevin for coming up with such a great idea! I love that it’s not permanently fixed to the floor, as I am able to move it around to clean the floor and the walls around the tub. It makes housekeeping so much easier.

Major renovation regrets The cement screed wall next to the main entrance appears darker than the beam, as it has been touched up multiple times. The first coat was the perfect tone, but I requested for several touch-ups because the edges weren’t done well. The colour got darker after the touch-up.

I’m hosting a dinner party for 12. Do you cater for such a number? We cater for both small groups of between 10 to 15 people as well as a larger group of up to 40. We provide mini buffets for lesser number of guests, but the food will be served in aluminium containers and there will not be any warmers provided.
I don’t want my guests to go hungry, neither do I wish for any wastage. How should I gauge my order size then? It’s important that you pre-determine the length and type of event you’re hosting, as well as the kind of food you plan to serve. A sit-down dinner is easier to gauge as opposed to an all-day cocktail party. That said, take note that the longer your guests stay, the more they’ll consume. The amount of food provided by a caterer will usually be sufficient enough for the number of people stipulated in your order form. However, if you expect your guests to be big eaters, you might want to increase your order. The same goes for a group with mainly small eaters. In addition, it’s best if you could predict the more popular food and beverages, as this will run out quickly than the rest. Order more of these.
My budget isn’t very big. What can I expect to get from the cheaper packages? There will be lesser courses with the cheaper packages. Do take note that most caterers would come up with a Christmas themed menu for the holiday season, and prices would be higher than the normal buffets. In fact, prices will hike up even for the original menus.
I haven’t confirmed my event details. Would booking at the last minute be too risky? Caterers often fill up their slots very quickly during the festive period especially for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Therefore, it is advisable to book at least two to three weeks in advice.
