CREATIVE IS

CLEVER

As much as we love romanticising the idea, being creative isn’t simply about writing poetry or painting a picture. The art of creativity takes skill and hard work. It involves tackling issues innovatively, and thinking out of the box.

Speaking of true artisans, we found ourselves meandering into homes with DIY projects that are worth noting (pg 26). Our t-blogger, Valerie, also showed us how she recycled unused napkins and old glass bottles, and turned them into quaint homes for her dried plants (pg 32). Plus, we had the pleasure of speaking to Melissa from Wonderland for Detailed Planners (pg 50), and the bright sparks behind The Little Drom Store (pg 53). Their passion for their craft is truly astounding. Interior decorating is one of the many wondrous ways in which we are able to express ourselves artistically. We say go out of the ordinary, take on one of the unique themes in page 6, and make it your own.

Imagine an apartment lavished with an upscale look – sans the exorbitant renovation cost. The design expert from Weiken.com managed to achieve that and more simply by picking the right materials for the project. Homeowner See Whye Oon might be abroad most of the time, but he still yearns to come back to a sanctuary he can call his own; one that feels cosy and is pleasing to the eye. As the avid traveller is no stranger to stays in fine hotels, his interior designer from Weiken.com, Wang Lin Feng, conceptualised a bachelor pad that strikes the perfect balance of luxury and cosy comfort.

The original glass windows were replaced with sliding ones to allow breakfast or the day’s meals to be dispatched to the dining table.

Leafy patterns are embossed on the middle section of the glass partitions to add visual interest. It’s also a way to avoid accidental bumps – especially if the glass was recently scrubbed to crystal clear perfection.

1210 square feet of space is pretty ample for the bachelor, but Lin Feng was adamant in making Whye Oon’s abode feel more spacious. What he came up with was simple yet effective. The interior design consultant hacked and replaced part of the wall that separates the study from the living room with glass partitions to allow more light to bounce freely around. The door to the study was also swapped with glass sliding doors to ensure the walkway to the master suite is drenched in light.

A prominent feature wall that spans across the living and dining room wall serves as the highlight of the communal area, seamlessly combining these two zones into one cavernous space. A raised platform fitted with LED lights at its base helps to subtly define the living room without taking away that sense of spaciousness. Even after dusk, the illuminated section helps to demarcate this cosy corner.

Wang Lin Feng Senior Interior Design Consultant

The painting that takes pride of place on Whye Oon’s dining room wall is a treasured gift from his good friend. It is one that he truly cherishes, which is why Lin Feng dedicated a framed shrine for this artwork. It’s mounted on solid wood and protected by sand glass, and it hangs on a feature wall crafted from moon white stone. Cove lighting lining the border bathes the artwork in soft light.

“I opted for moon white stone because it boasts an interesting texture. It is subtler than marble or granite, yet it’s just as luxurious looking,” explains Lin Feng, elaborating how there are no glaring reflections when light from the cove lighting illuminates the stone.

RenoTalk 14

“Whye Oon was so satisfied with the finished work that he wrote a letter to commend Weiken.com on a job well done.”

Another of the interior designer’s worthy suggestion was to utilise dark-coloured laminates instead of lighter shades for the bay window seats. Paler tones tend to discolour easily when exposed to the sun’s rays, and these areas are privy to a dose of sunshine every morning.

Lin Feng’s masterly choice of materials used to highlight Whye Oon’s abode is also apparent in the other two private rooms. Bay window seats that exude the opulent quality of marble are really laminates. Not only are they more durable, they go a long way in trimming the entire cost of the renovation. This touch of luxurious affordability is also echoed on the television feature wall in both rooms.

“It’s important for an interior designer to sport a good attitude, stand in the homeowners’ shoes to get their point of view, fully understand their needs, and prevent miscommunication,” says Lin Feng. “This allows them to make the best of their home without unnecessary expenditure,” he continues.

There’s nothing quite like wood to infuse a space with warmth and timeless style. Lin Feng ensured wood-inspired finishes are peppered around the abode to offset the cool laminate veneers and gleaming glass and mirrored panels.

RenoTalk 15

Stylish Space

To ensure the apartment truly feels like it belongs to him, Whye Oon had free rein in selecting the furniture and wallpaper pattern for his bachelor pad. What best to furnish your living space than with your very own personal picks? “Designers should consider and prioritise the homeowners’ personal preferences. That said, it’s best to tag along on these shopping trips to ensure the furnishings are of suitable size and shape for the newly renovated home,” Lin Feng suggests. RenoTalk 16

Feature walls are nothing new in the industry, but these wall panels from Prokk are set to raise the bar. Their geometric forms are modern, clean and very on-trend. But what sets them apart is an entirely new degree of functionality that will take you by surprise.

Polly Pockets

Functional built-in options for each model include integrated shelves, niches, switches and sockets.

One of the built-in options that we’re obsessing over is the hollow alcove within the wall panel that doubles as a mini-shelf. This narrow nook is handy for stowing your reading materials, while staying unobtrusive.

Light Up The LED lights that are discreetly hidden within the panels softly illuminate a room for the most magical ambience that’s perfect for snuggling.

A 5-room resale HDB flat

A large open-plan apartment that is fashioned after a quaint cottage is the relaxing retreat the homeowners have always wished for.

RenoTalk 20

When it comes to the abode of his dreams, the homeowner revealed to Summit Design Studio how he secretly wished for a retreat in an idyllic countryside with his family. The interior designer that he enlisted took this to heart, and presented the clan with a dwelling that possesses the quaint beauty, cosy ambience and charm of a cottage. Imagine the bliss of retiring to your very own urban cabin!

Backed by the striking red wall, a reading nook is created without the need for walls. Away from the living room, it is free from distractions and allows the kinfolk to unwind.

RenoTalk 21

Stylish Space

It helped that this resale apartment is particularly spacious, as it gives the designer more leeway to work his magic. To ensure that the country chic look the family expects is stylish and not dated, achieving balance is vital. To attain this, the design expert opted to awash the abode in a neutral colour scheme with a splash of vivacious red at strategic spots. Wood is the main element in a cottage style interior, which is why it’s generously used here. From dark wood paneling on the living room ceiling and solid wood side table and television console to laminate cabinets that mimic the exquisite grains of this material, these are allowed to truly pop especially against the creamy white walls. Even the bathroom in the master suite sports a wall of stone bricks to emulate the classic cabin feel. Sumptuous textures such as the fabric sofa and carpet soften the wood-dominant abode – giving way to a more welcoming atmosphere.

RenoTalk 22

Summit Design Studio constructed a bike stand to cater to the family’s active lifestyle. This nifty structure makes it easy for them to bring down and store their bikes. Plus, it clears walking space and cuts down on clutter – pleasing the lady of the house too.

Removing the walls at the kitchen entrance presents the homeowner’s significant other with more area to act out her masterchef moments.

Stylish Space

They say that a family that eats together stays together. Dinner with the entire family is hard to come by, but it truly opens the door for communication and encourages bonding between your loved ones. This dining table was specially crafted for the kinfolks – perfectly sized to fit everyone in and boasting functional space for the Missus’ collection of tableware.

RenoTalk 24

One of the joys of living in the countryside is the abundance of space. The interior designer from Summit Design Studio ensured a similar feeling of openness is infused within this family’s home by hacking the walls that divided the dining area from the kitchen. The idea to fit foldable windows along the space above the sofa is pure genius. Those in the study can have a share of the action in the living room, and they can simply shut the foldable windows close for privacy on demand. In fact, the bed enjoys the lion’s share of space in the master suite, as the couple’s stylish apparels are discreetly stowed away in a walkin wardrobe near their bathroom. Hence, there is no clutter or unnecessary furniture to obstruct the way – warranting freedom of movement for the homeowners.

Going by the moniker TraseOne, street artist Muhammad Sufian lives and breathes art. Naturally, one would assume the 4-room apartment he’s residing with his wife and baby daughter would be likened to the fancy murals that he usually works on. However, Sufian begs to differ. “I prefer coming back to a place that has a clean look. It helps to clear and refresh my mind,” he says. With a minimal decor accompanied by sudden pops of colour and unexpected details, his personal living quarters might not be as elaborate as his artworks, but it’s just as unique. See how Sufian manages to fuse art into the personal space he and his loved ones call home.

DIY Project 1 “For the feature wall in our living room, my wife and I initially thought of doing a faux brick wall or putting up wallpaper. In the end, we decided to go for something more personalised that represents my identity as a painter. We both feel that the organic lines and flow of the huge drips that I painted balance the minimal look of our home.”

DIY Project 2 “The dining area is what we affectionately call ‘The Hackers’ Corner’ since almost everything there is DIY. The table is an IKEA hack, while the bench is made by me right from scratch. It’s constructed from plywood, and painted to look like it was made from steel for that exaggerated industrial vibe. Storage is important to us, so I built one that includes a storage compartment. I guess I could have just saved the trouble and purchase a ready piece instead. However, I couldn’t find the right fit. And after scouting around for custom benches, I figured I could simply make my own for a fraction of the price. It gave me a chance to practise my craft, as it’s been a long while since I last did woodwork.”

RenoTalk 26

“When it comes to designing the place, it is a collaboration between my wife and I. She’d share her ideas, and I would try to realise them.”

“We’ve always liked the idea of doing everything ourselves. But since the ar rival of our baby in Septembe r last year, things went to a standstill and DI Y time got converted to baby time! We’re slowly getting back into the swing of things with the final touc h-up of our little one’s polka-dotted ro om.” Upcoming Plans “I’m planning to build some shelves from scrap wood or old crates for the living room. My wife is currently working on paper dahlia flowers for décor purposes. We feel our walls look too bare, so that’s where we’re focusing our crafty ideas on next.”

RenoTalk 27

Stylish Space

Interior designer with Custombox, Mr. Foo isn’t a stranger to DIY projects. The 5-room flat he shares with his wife, daughter and pet dog frequently sees a symphony of metal clanging, whizzing drills and loud hammering whenever he gets into his creative mode. In fact, he’s so adept that he gets requests from his clients too.

DIY Project 1 “I needed a lot of storage space for my study, and wanted separate compartments with individual locks. What came to mind were those metal lockers commonly found in schools. Unfortunately, they looked too pristine and would look out of place in our industrial-themed home. To give the lockers a more distressed look, I painstakingly treated and painted the materials.”

DIY Project 2 “Our Fengshui master advised us to incorporate a wooden element into our master bedroom. Taking his advice to heart, I fashioned the feature wall that faces the bed from scratch – cutting the wood planks, treating them and pinning them carefully on to the wall.”

“DIY projects are noisy and messy affairs with solvent fumes and thick clouds of dust. However, my wife and I agree that the end result is usually more than satisfactory.” RenoTalk 28

Upon entry into Valerie and Roland’s abode, guests wouldn’t have guessed that the couple initially wanted a beach holiday themed sanctuary. Their Scandinavian-Industrial interior is a far cry from the whitewashed look characteristic of a coastal style. We speak to the vivacious couple, as they let us in on the three tips that make hunting for the right interior designer easy, and how randomness played a part in crafting the look that reflects who they are.

Project

A 4-room HDB BTO flat that spans 92 sqf

Property of

Valerie Ng, a civil servant in her late 20s, and Roland Li, an IT salesperson in his early 30s

How did your home evolve into the Scandinavian-|ndustrial style? Roland: Both Valerie and I loved the seaside look, but there were too many restrictions in our HDB flat to be able to emulate it. Our apartment clearly lacks the light and spaciousness that’s required to achieve that style. Valerie: Fortunately, our interior designer from Fuse Concept knew that we were smitten with the raw beauty of wood. Taking this into consideration, he retained the wooden element from the coastal theme, added colour to offset the copious amount of brown, and evolved it into the style that you see right now.

RenoTalk 32

|s your flat’s constrained layout the reason why you requested the designer to hack the top half of your kitchen wall?

Roland: That’s right. Our kitchen was quite dark, and we preferred if it looked brighter and bigger. The two of us also wanted a sense of connection to the space outside. With these glass partitions, we’re able to look out into the living and dining areas.

Colours dotting the apartment offset its

dusky palette, and inject fun into the young couple’s personal living quarters.

RenoTalk 33

RenoDiary

Valerie: To be honest, this was a spur-of-themoment decision. We each liked a different design, and we just randomly decided to get both. Roland gets his pick, and I get mine. This mismatched look also reflects our playful and random personality.

Don’t chuck away those extra napkins from Starbucks yet. The pair recycled these and used them as decorative elements for their recycled and old jars – turning them into

picturesque home accessories.

RenoTalk 34

Your dining table is unique. Where is it from?

Roland: We customised it from Second Charm, a vintage store at Kallang. Valerie: Both of us loved hairpin legs, so we requested for those as well as a colourful tabletop. Roland was apprehensive when he laid eyes on it for the first time, but I loved it instantly! The raw surface makes it a low maintenance piece that’s perfect for when we have kids in the future.

RenoTalk 35

RenoDiary

Valerie: I’m really proud of it, as I designed it myself! Unlike most homeowners, I wanted a shoe cabinet that stands out rather than blend in with the surroundings. This is also due to the fact that our entryway’s layout makes it impossible for it to be hidden away. I love vintage-industrial lockers, so I sketched an impression of it out. Roland: We even scouted for the air vents ourselves. I spray-painted them black, as they were originally silver.

Roland: Yes, it is! Since the shoe cabinet is already at the entryway, we thought it’s the right location for our WIFI details. Most people would usually ask for the password anyway, so we thought of making it easier and, perhaps, less embarrassing for them by scribbling it on.

The duo purposely opted for raw cement screed walls sans sealant. They love the imperfections, and they feel these minor cracks add to their pad.

character

Chemistry and open communication between homeowners and interior designer is essential. Finding the right one is not impossible; it just takes a bit of effort. You should sit down with your other half and thrash things out together, so that the two of you can reach a consensus. It’s great if you both like the same thing. But if one likes the vintage look while the other prefers contemporary, it’s important that you find the right balance. It’s imperative that you choose the company with the right price, not necessarily the lowest price.

RenoTalk 37

Start early. It’s not as easy or as fast as simply sending out a quote. You need to take time to meet with the interior designer to hear him out. This way, you get to see his other works and ideas, and find out if there’s chemistry between you.

The Home Workspace Edition

It doesn’t matter if your office nook is tiny or you’re privy to an entire room. We have ways to help you transform that empty space into one built for productivity.

Studio Set-Up • Make your personal workspace

Whether you’re an entrepreneur starting an online business from home or you’re casually traipsing the World Wide Web for a spot of inspiration, an office chair makes a difference between supporting or tiring out your back.

“We spend most of our day sitting in front of the computer which adds stress to our back. Ergonomic chairs help to support our lumbar area and maintain good posture. However, due to every user’s unique requirements, it’s always good to personally try out an office chair for at least 20 minutes.” Carissa Campos, Design Manager from Comfort Design Breathable mesh upholstery ensures heat ventilation, making it ideal for use in our sunny climate. A chair that is comfortable for your petite best friend might not be able to support the needs of your taller, brawnier other half. This is why it’s important that you test-drive a selection prior to purchase. Here are tips on what you should be looking out for.

SEAT HEIGHT

It should be adjustable with a range of about 16 to 21 inches off the floor. This allows users to place their feet comfortably flat on the floor with thighs positioned horizontally.

SEAT WIDTH & DEPTH

The right depth is one where users can sit with their back against the backrest of the chair, leaving approximately two to four inches between the back of knees and the seat of chair. A width of 17 to 20 inches is usually the standard. Anything too narrow would be potentially uncomfortable.

SEAT MATERIAL

As you’ll be sitting on it for quite a while, the seat should boast enough padding to ensure comfort.

ARMREST

“Proper lighting makes all work tasks easier. Adjustability is very important, as you should be able to direct light where you need it most. If you’re right-handed, place the lamp on the left side of your work area – and vice versa for lefties. This placement helps reduce the chance of shadows on your space.” Rhiannon Hills, Director with Danish Design Co

Supplement your work surface with proper task lighting in the form of table lamps or wall-mounted reading lights. These luminaries let you control the amount of light as well as adjust the position where you require illumination for a certain task. BigFoot Lamp, $279, Naiise.com

The reality of life in Singapore is that you can’t escape work – unless you’re really lucky, or extremely loaded. For the rest of us mere mortals, our mad rush seems to slow down to a drag the closer we get to the weekend. However, if you head to an office that boasts its very own games room, a meeting room in the likeness of London’s phone booth, or a pretty pantry that looks more like a café, Mondays would probably be less blue for you. Now let’s cast our jealousies aside, and check out these vibrant and fun offices we’d love to be a part of.

Google

8 Marina View The open layout of the Google office sited in our sunny island isn’t one that most working professionals are accustomed to – but could get used to. This sense of spaciousness isn’t purely for aesthetic reasons. The lack of walls or boundaries allows ample opportunity for ‘casual collisions’, or a chance for Googlers to connect with those they don’t normally interact with in a day’s work. No need to battle for the best space to chill out and relax when there’s more than plenty, from seatings that come in all shapes and sizes to dedicated games zones and fully stocked micro-kitchens. Lego fans will love the company’s pantry where employees can de-stress by playing with actual Lego bricks on a huge wall. Ambience: Aside from the freedom of space, we love the touch of local flavour that’s blended into the interior’s décor. With a café called ‘Goopitiam’ that’s stocked with biscuits and goodies reminiscent of the old school, feeling right at home is easy at Google.

Tripadvisor

8 Cross Street Imagine if you could take on the day’s workload revitalised and fully motivated day after day – no matter if it’s Monday or midweek. Tripadvisor’s office décor is specifically designed to evoke that indescribable feeling of traipsing across the globe. After all, it’s a sentiment that lies close to the heart of the world’s largest travel site. Elements that recall the sights of world-famous landmarks are predominant across the entire 16,000 square feet of space. Expect road signages planted along walkways, warm-lit lamp posts peppered throughout the space, as well as chicken wire-framed wall dividers. There’s even a replica of London’s famous red phone booth to hold meetings in. Ambience: Wouldn’t it be lovely to be able to stroll down Hyde Park as you head to the Finance department? Although not physically there, the environment created in this fun and vibrant office surely makes work less of a humdrum. We wonder if they ever get bitten by the travel bug?

Sennex

315 Outram Road

Housed in the iconic Tan Boon Liat Building located at Tiong Bahru, Sennex sports an open-plan interior complete with high ceilings – a dream for those who adore that loft-like atmosphere. Its décor style is one we’d most likely emulate our home after, with the industrial caged lights, the rustic appeal of untreated wood furniture, as well as black metallic accents and cement screed finishes that offset the raw wood surfaces rather fabulously. Plus, the copious amount of sunshine streaming in through the huge windows lets us imagine we’re working alfresco. Ambience: Stressed? Grab a coffee and nurse your anxiety by chilling at the pantry that appears more like a cool café. Soak in some sun, and feel that tension slowly melt away.

A woman of refined taste with an eye for details, Melissa Wang, director with Wonderland for Detailed Planners, tells us why every event organiser would appreciate having them as their planning partner. Because who wouldn’t want an event stylist who’s got décor and interior styling perfected to a tee?

Creative Profile

Melissa Wang Director of Wonderland for Detailed Planners My Favourite Flower The English Rose because it’s a classic. The layered petals are lush and mesmerising. Unfortunately, they are not easily available in Singapore. I’m Most Inspired By Interiors and store décor. This is why I ensure that during my trips abroad, I dedicate at least a day or two visiting stores, paying great attention to visual merchandising details.

Tell us more about Wonderland for Detailed Planners. Wonderland for Detailed Planners is four years old, and our vision for the business is to be a purveyor of tasteful and inspiring aesthetics. We started achieving this through our events arm in 2010. However, it is our store and F&B arm, Shop Wonderland, that allowed us to reach more consumers with this vision. Here, everyone can be immersed in the Wonderland world. What type of events have you styled and set up for? We’ve been commissioned to plan events for high-end luxury brands as well as weddings. They range from gala dinners and important events hosted for top clienteles, to solemnisations and banquet dinners. Any favourites? It has to be Chanel’s. There were numerous times when we were given the opportunity to set up floral and wreath bars for guests. During these events, we’d customise each arrangement according to the guests’ preferences. And they’d love it! At the end of the day, we get a huge sense of satisfaction from the mingling and interactions.

“When it comes to setting tables, an attention to details is important because this greatly affects the dining experience of every guest.” You’re brilliant at setting tables. What are the top three tips you’d advise homeowners who are preparing for a fancy sit-down dinner? The three most important aspects of table styling are balance, texture and colour. Always strike a balance between the materials used, such as fabric, wood or glass, when you’re planning the setting. There should never be an overuse of a single material, as it might be overwhelming. Texture is also important, as it’ll draw your guests to admire the décor details and appreciate the aesthetics. You should use a minimum of one textured element and a maximum of three. A printed table linen, for example, introduces visual interest to your table. Lastly, pick a colour according to the occasion, theme or cuisine. Brighter and more cheerful hues would enhance the alfresco ambience of an outdoor brunch. How about candy bars and baby showers? How would you approach the different scale and type of event? The three tips I mentioned before are the techniques we use to approach events and settings of any scale. They are styling fundamentals that can be applied in any setting.

Wonderland for Detailed Planners is open from Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm. 37 Haji Lane, Level 3, S189230 Tel: 6468 2068 Email: enquiry@wonderland.com.sg RenoTalk 51

Taking inspiration from the word dröm that means dream in Swedish, this creative duo kick-started The Little Dröm Store in the hopes of bringing people together to promote, share and spread the love for art and design. Creative Profile Antoinette Wong and Stanley Tan Bright sparks behind The Little Dröm Store Best part about being drömkeepers Seeing people get inspired What inspires them to keep their creative juice flowing A desire to see Singapore’s creative industry flourish and grow Who is the store perfect for? It is for those who appreciate tasteful and well-designed products. What sets it apart from other local shops? We try our best to curate our products, especially those that we import from abroad. We also strive to bring in unique goods that we’ve never seen before in Singapore. In addition, we design our very own creations!

We love your handcrafted creations! Where do you get your inspiration from? Inspiration comes mostly through daily conversations and interactions with family and friends, as well as from treasured memories of how and what we grew up with. Apart from the retail aspect, you guys also collaborate with other designers and conduct workshops for the public. What do you love most about doing this? We really love seeing people get inspired, have fun, and joyfully soaking up new knowledge that feeds not only the mind, but the soul! Watching them stick to their creative dreams and passion despite the odds truly warms our heart.

Talk to us about the workshops. We’ve hosted three now. The first was Cheese Tasting with “The Cheese Ark” in October 2014, then Paint a Mini-Me Pot with “Polkaros” the following month, and Make Fruity PomPoms with “Greenlaundry” in December last year. It’s been a success so far. Please share with us your current favourite curio, and why it tickles your fancy. Our current obsession is the Moomin House! We love Moomin, and we’ve never seen a Moomin house this detailed before. It’s such a visual treat, as it opens up to reveal the interior that features six rooms and two attics. Tove Jansson, its creator and author, once said, “It is simply this: do not tire, never lose interest, never grow indifferent – lose your invaluable curiosity and you let yourself die. It’s as simple as that.” This amazing little abode reminds us of this quote, and the adventurous and inquisitive spirit behind this character. The Little Dröm Store SOTA,

Housekeeping

Sanding Situation You know it’s time to sand and refinish your hardwood floor when its finishes have worn off to reveal bare wood especially in high traffic areas. Other indications that point to the need to renovate include floors with dull surfaces and visible scratches. Read on and find out more about what to expect before, during and after the process of sanding and refinishing.

Before You Begin Cost & Budget Research your needs first, and educate yourself on the products used prior to acquiring quotes. It’s best to make comparison between two to three contractors. It’s important to note that these are just estimates. All things that are promised should be included in the final contract to you. Prior Assessment A contractor needs to check your home to assess the level of damage done, and whether there are specific areas with more wear. Product Information You need to be well informed on the products used during the work processes. Enlighten yourself by requesting for specification sheets or product brochures from your contractor. Chemical Sensitivities If a family member has chemical sensitivities, ask for a copy of the MSDS (Material Safety Date Sheet) for the products that will be used. Your physician can thus advise accordingly.

During The Process

After Sanding & Refinishing

Work Hours The expected length of time that a worker spends at your home should be discussed in the “Expectations” portion of your bid.

Walk On Try not to walk across your floor until it is fully cured, as the finish is more susceptible to scuffing and scratches then. You can, however, saunter across with stockings on after three to four hours, and place your furniture back on the floor gently after 48 hours. Area rugs should only be placed one week after the finish is fully cured.

Vacating The Premises With Bona systems, there is no need to vacate your home. These waterborne finishes are environmentally safe with low-VOCs, no harmful fumes, and fast drying time. Foreseeing Delays Take note that temperature and relative humidity affect the drying time of the product used on your floors. For Pet Owners While Bona systems are safe for pets, it’s best to keep them off the floors during the sanding and finishing processes. This is to ensure there is no dirt or hair stuck in the floor’s polyurethane coating.

Cleaning Up Since sanding is dust-free and the airborne dust generated during the process is eliminated with Bona systems, cleaning up is minimal. Maintenance Work The frequency of maintenance after completion depends on whether you stay on your own or you have children and pets. If it’s the latter, we recommend that you use a dust mop daily or every other day. You could also regularly clean floors with a waterborne, non-toxic solution formulated for wooden floors.

Bon Appetit

The arrival of a precious one is a huge milestone in life. It is more than enough reason to hold a party and share the joy with others. Shawn, director with FoodLine.sg, suggests catering for your little angel’s baby shower because preparations might be too overwhelming for you and your significant other – especially when you’ve got a crying infant who needs your undivided attention every other hour. Apart from delegating a professional to handle the cooking, why else should parents of newborns consider catering? Shawn: Organising an event involves more than just cooking and preparing the food. You need to take into account setup and disposal as well. Also, imagine if you need to prep for a party of 30 to 40 guests. When you’ve assigned this responsibility into the capable hands of professionals, you can focus your attention on your guests and play your part as convivial hosts. What are the factors that should be taken into consideration in a party that involves small children? With small children around, you have to make sure there is ample finger food to keep them interested. Balloons or simple toys are sure-fire ways of entertaining them. If you’re able to stretch your budget and space is sufficient, try ordering one of those bouncy castles. It’s great fun! Why do we need to offer auspicious food such as red eggs? For the Chinese, auspicious food plays an integral role in our belief system regardless of the type of celebration. Red eggs are a significant part of a baby’s full month, as red is regarded as an auspicious colour and eggs symbolise the start of a new life. There’s even a Chinese saying that advises couples without children to take more of the red eggs, so that they can be blessed with a baby soon. What else should be prepared? FoodLine has prepared a handy checklist to help parents organise a baby shower without worries. It’s helpful particularly for first-time parents. Check it out on our website at www.FoodLine.sg/baby-shower-guide
