The Broadway Musical Guys and Dolls was written in 1950 by Joe Swerling and Abe Burrows. The musical was based off of two 1920s short stories “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown” and “Blood Pressure” written by Damon Runyon.

The original Broadway production opened November 24, 1950 to unanimously positive reviews. The musical ran for 1200 performances and won a Tony Award for Best Musical. In 1951, Guys and Dolls would have won the Pulitzer prize for Drama, however, the Trustees of Columbia University vetoed the selection causing no prize to be given out that year. Vivian Blaine was originally considered to play Sarah Brown, but it was ultimately decided that she was ill-suited for such a conservative role. To fit Blaine into the show, the character of Miss Adelaide was created just for her.

In 1955, a film adaption was made staring Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra, and Vivian Blaine. Three new songs were introduced including “Adelaide� which was written specifically for Sinatra. Marilyn Monroe wanted to play Adelaide in the film, but director Joseph L. Mankiewicz was set on having Blaine from the original production.

While filming the scene where Sky (Marlon Brando) and Nathan (Frank Sinatra) meet, practical jokester Brando purposely flubbed multiple takes so that Sinatra would have to continue to eat cheesecake. Sinatra hated cheesecake and eventually they had to quit for the day because Sinatra could not take one more bite. Coming to Reading PA!

Nathan Lane, the actor who played Nathan Detroit in the 1992 revival, was originally born with the name Joseph Lane. However, because there was already a Joseph Lane registered with Actors’ Equity, he changed his name to Nathan Lane after the character in the show. Nathan Lane Coming to Reading PA!
