CAST BIOGRAPHIES
EMILY RHINEHART (Donna Sheridan) is thrilled to be back on the Genesius stage! She has been involved in community theater in the area for over 15 years and is over the moon to finally be sharing the stage with her friend and director Chris Sperat! Some previous roles include "Olive" (Spelling Bee), "Inga" (Young Frankenstein), "Kate Monster" (Avenue Q), "Martha Dunnstock" (Heathers), "Joanne" (Rent), "Doralee Rhoads" (9 to 5), "Gladys" (Memphis) and the "Fortune Teller" (Side Show). Emily wants to thank Chris for the opportunity to play (hopefully the first of many) Meryl Streep roles, Sophie for being wonderful and so supportive and Kevin for being such a wonderful friend and accompanist. Many thanks also to the cast and crew, for being so wonderful and making this experience so fun! She would like to dedicate this performance to her very own Waterloo, Mitch: "I wouldn’t be here without you!" CHRISTOPHER SPERAT (Sam Carmichael/Director) most recently appeared as "Amos" in Chicago. Last season, he was seen as "Bruce" in Fun Home. He directed last season’s Beauty and the Beast, and the local premiere of The Bridges of Madison County. He also directed Agnes of God at 1st Street Players. He appeared for a hot second as "Buck Wiley" in Memphis, was seen as "Hysterium" in Forum, and in Steel River’s The Music Man as "Marcellus". He directed Side Show, Rock of Ages, Mary Poppins, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, 9 to 5, Hairspray, The King and I, Carrie, Legally Blonde, Sunset Blvd. and Annie at Genesius. He also directed Titanic in Concert, The Sound of Music, Aspects of Love in Concert, Debbie Does Dallas, Evita in Concert, The Wedding Singer, Chess in Concert, Gypsy, Grease, Little Women, Oliver!, Cats, Meshuggah-Nuns, Nuncrackers, Blood Brothers, Really Rosie, Rags and The Rocky Horror Show. PANAYIOTIS CLAUSER (Sky) is excited to be part of this production with such a talented cast. He is actually half Greek so being part of a show that takes place in Greece brings back memories of summers visiting family there. Like Sky, he loves to travel the world but unfortunately can’t because he’s a broke college student. He’s also played "Michael" in The Bridges of Madison County at Genesius last year. BECKA MALANIOS (Rosie/Assistant Director) is excited to be back on the Genesius stage, last seen as "Marge" in The Bridges of Madison County. 7 AND ½ CENTS DOESN’T BUY A HECK OF A LOT... From The Pajama Game, a 1950’s hit musical
$41.67 DOESN’T BUY A HECK OF A LOT… In 2019, accounting for almost 70 years of inflation!!
BUT, we, at Genesius Theatre, figured it out… If you give that $41.67 to Genesius Theatre once a month for 12 months, and if 99 additional donors give the same amount, that is a heck of a lot. It’s FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS!
”
THAT’S RIGHT! Genesius needs…is asking… perhaps, even a tad begging…100 generous people, such as yourself, to dig deep and give us $500 over the course of 12 months. Fifty thousand dollars will help Genesius continue to provide the very best theatrical opportunities for our talented kids, tweens, teens and adults. Fifty thousand dollars will help Genesius continue to provide the very best theatrical entertainment in Berks County for you, our audience. Our goal of fifty thousand dollars will enable Genesius to do substantial and much needed building repairs to our 95 year-old building and to purchase additional lights and sound equipment. It’s true… $41.67 doesn’t buy a heck of a lot… unless you give it to Genesius Theatre 12 times, over 12 months, along with 99 other super fantastic donors. Then, all of a sudden, it does!!!
GENESIUS THEATRE - The Little Theater That Could… And Does!! IT’S EASY AND SIMPLE You can donate $500 upfront, with cash, check or credit card. OR, we can make it much easier on your wallet by taking $41.67 as an ACH Debit or from your credit card, as a recurring charge for the next twelve months. For more information or to make a commitment: Please call Larry Fecho, Phone: 610-780-7627 | Email: LJ.Fecho@GenesiusTheatre.org Thank you for your continued support of Genesius Theatre and for your consideration of this substantial donation.

JANUARY 24TH THRU FEBRUARY 2ND, 2020 THE STORY Filled with warm humor and tremendous heart, SWEAT tells the story of a group of friends who have spent their lives sharing drinks, secrets, and laughs while working together on the factory floor. But when layoffs and picket lines begin to chip away at their trust, the friends find themselves pitted against each other in a heart-wrenching fight to stay afloat. Winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize. “Keenly observed and often surprisingly funny—but ultimately heartbreaking—the work traces the roots of a tragedy with both forensic psychological detail and embracing compassion. Ms. Nottage…is writing at the peak of her powers…” —NY Times. “…passionate and necessary…a masterful depiction of the forces that divide and conquer us…SWEAT communicates its points with minimal fuss and maximum grit. Along with the rage, despair and violence, there’s humor and abundant humanity…a cautionary tale of what happens when you don’t know how to resist.” —Time Out NY. “Sharp and threatening as a box cutter blade…ferociously engrossing…SWEAT never feels less than authentic— and crucial.” —Deadline.com.
LYNN NOTTAGE’S PULITZER Lynn Nottage is dedicated to opening up stories that we’re not used to hearing. She brings a sense of curiosity to all sorts of subjects and a clear eye to notoriously difficult parts of American culture and society. She’s the only writer I can think of working now, in any medium, who so understands poor white Americans, with compassion for their terror but no pity for the racial attitudes people end up getting stuck in. It’s been a tremendous privilege to explore this aspect of American life in Sweat—the play for which she won her second Pulitzer, becoming the only woman ever to have won twice in the drama category. The key is Lynn’s empathy for her characters and their stories. She spent years traveling to Reading, Pa., to research Sweat, but her intellectual rigor never comes at the expense of humanity.
SYNOPSIS It’s the year 2000 in Reading, Pennsylvania and a group of friends go to work at the steel mill and then decompress at the bar like they’ve been doing for over 20 years. But, unbeknownst to them, their lives are about to be uprooted. Their steel mill, Olstead’s, is making some changes and the blood, sweat and tears, not to mention the generations of loyalty these workers have shown, don’t seem to amount to much. These middle class, unionized, steelworkers have made plans to save money, go on vacations and then retire with a nice, healthy pension, but when rumors start flying that the company is considering layoffs, and flyers are hung to recruit non-union Latino workers for less money, the war between community and capitalism begins, and tensions start destroying not only jobs, but also relationships. This poignant play takes a look at the deindustrial revolution through the lens of a history play, but also delves into the issues of today: the economy, immigration, race-relations in America, and politics. Lynn Nottage’s Sweat gives us characters filled with the good and the bad and asks us to reflect on our own views and the views of others. Nottage never tells us who’s right or who’s wrong, but always shows us who’s human.
