CAKE CRASHER

Yusef Sadiq, wholesale manager at 253, shared their most recent product launches. The first one is Cake Crasher, an indica-dominant hybrid strain made by crossing wedding cake with wedding crasher. “The strain is a must-try with chunky trichomes, sweet scents of floral haze and grape candy,” said Sadiq. “This strain produces euphoric effects that make consumers feel hazy and creative.” He noted that this product has become a “well known staple strain” for 253. For 1g the cost is $15 and for 3.5g the cost is $50. Cannabis and sales tax not included. Pricing on flower may vary.

CARAMEL CHEWS

The second product as described by Sadiq is a staff favorite - Kosher Sea Salt Caramels - made with real butter, real vanilla extract and pink Himalayan Sea Salt. “These caramels are creamy with a chewy consistency that you are sure to 10

Some of the benefits of THCV include a natural form of energy, natural appetite suppressant, increased motivation and increased feeling of euphoria. Brown said this product is often recommended to be used in the daytime. She noted that these gummies are the first of their kind on the Massachusetts market - a true source of natural energy.

CANNALOPE HAZE

A third product mentioned by Brown is “Cannalope Haze.” Cannalope Haze is “strong sativa that crosses between Haze Brothers and a Mexican landrace,” said Brown. “Accompanied by its sweet burst of flavor, Cannalope Haze is known for inducing a strong cerebral high accompanied by an underlying body buzz and energy boost.” The sativa strains’ profile is melon, tropical and floral.

413 CULTIVARS

Lewis Goldstein from Insa said their company is “leading the charge to bring the highest quality, most exciting, widest variety of cannabis to the right coast.” He continued, “With the mission of making the East Coast the new cannabis capital, Insa went back to their Massachusetts roots and launched a new line of strains born and raised in Western Mass.” Goldstein explained that all 413 Cultivars are Insa-exclusive strains that took years in the making, through a process called “pheno-hunting.” This is when expert growers selectively breed multiple new strains and narrow them down to the best variations of each plant. The first release included 413 Papi Runtz, 413 Runtz, 413 Ice Pop, 413 Razzberry Budino and 413 Concord Grape, all available in the 1-gram pre-roll format, retailing for $15. Goldstein said there will be more releases of these varieties and other new, exclusive strains throughout the summer. “Consumers should keep an eye out for these launches – they’re limited releases and won’t last long,” he said.

NEW STRAINS

Goldstein shared that three other “rare strains” recently joined the Insa roster: Jealousy, Zhits Fire and Lemon Mother Pucker. “Jealousy is an indica-leaning cultivar, created by crossing Gelato 41 and Sunset Sherbet. This delicious cultivar has a sweet, creamy flavor instilling jealousy in anyone that is missing out on it,” he said. “Zhits Fire is a mouth-watering, sativa-leaning cultivar made from a rare cross of Z, an undisclosed strain, and FAF. This delicious strain has sugary, fruity flavors — great for anybody who loves dessert cultivars.” Lastly, Goldstein said that Lemon Mother Pucker is a sativa cross of Sour Z and Lemonade Oz Kush.

“Users reported mouth-watering lemon terps with a slight cream on the back end. This is the perfect daytime smoke — good for hiking, doing yard work or anything active,” he said. According to Insa’s Head Grower Frank Golfieri, due to Zhits Fire and Lemon Mother Pucker being rare strains, Insa may be the only retailer to have them on the East Coast. “This effort is a part of Insa’s Right Coast Revolution, a quest to revolutionize the quality and quantity of cannabis offerings available on the East Coast as well as educate as many consumers as possible about the benefits of cannabis, and fight the stigmas still attached to using cannabis,” said Goldstein.

SUMMER SEASONALS

“Also known for its seasonal launches, Insa is giving its customers a taste of classic summer treats in ways they’ve never seen before in the cannabis industry. Because nothing says summer like a day at the beach, and no day at the beach is complete without a cold, frozen, tropical drink. Insa’s new Drop flavor pays homage to a crowd-pleaser – the piña colada,” said Goldstein. “Bursting with tropical pineapple, sweet coconut and 5mg of THC per

piece, these will transport your mind and body to a relaxing beach vacation — no passport necessary.” On the vaporizer front, the Rocket Pop is a combination of cherry, lemon and blue raspberry flavors combined in this seasonal classic. “This new vape has all the character of the red-blue-and-white fan-favorite popsicle,” said Goldstein. “And after those long summer days, the perfect dessert for summer nights around a campfire is, no surprise, delicious ooey-gooey s’mores,” he continued. Described by Goldstein as “crushed graham crackers, fluffy marshmallows, creamy milk chocolate and the highest-quality cannabis,” it’s all transformed into an exclusive chocolate for those long summer nights. “This season’s newest edible chocolate creation features 5mg of THC per piece, and 20 pieces per bar, guaranteed to get consumers asking for s’more,” said Goldstein. The Piña Colada drops and the S’mores Chocolate Bar retail for $30. The Rocket Pop 500mg Carts and Darts retail for $55 each and the 350mg pens cost $40.

BUDZEE DELIVERY

M

uch like the days when pot brownies solely reigned supreme, eventually opening the doors to a wide variety of edibles, dosed meals and culinary delights, delivery is not just for pizza anymore. While delivery services like Uber Eats are navigating the market of delivering “eats” and “not eats”—their descriptor for the inedible products they deliver; Budzee Delivery in Easthampton has cornered the direct from wholesale delivery market for recreational cannabis in Massachusetts. “I think delivery is going to be the next big thing in the industry,” said Kevin Perrier co-founder and CEO of Budzee Delivery, which opened in April. “Changes in the regulations allowed for recreational delivery, and we thought wouldn’t it be great to create something like Amazon?” Consumers, who were already no strangers to online shopping, were forced to relying even heavier on delivery services such as Instacart or 24

CANNABISREVIEWQUARTERLY.COM

GrubHub throughout the pandemic, and in turn many businesses learned how to adapt, utilize, and implement their own forms of delivery. Added Perrier, “These days we have everything delivered, convenience is king, so it just made sense.” While the ultimate goal is to provide delivery services to the entire state of Massachusetts, currently Budzee services, where permitted, most towns west of Worcester. As the first warehouse-style delivery service in this area, Perrier said one of Budzee’s first priorities was to reach “out to the municipalities that we planned to service, well before launching.” He explained, “we felt it was important to be courteous and let them know we were coming. We did get some push back, as the regulation was very new and not widely known. Most of them were very welcoming though.” Motivated by the idea of helping the area’s economy and creating employment opportunities in his area, Perrier,

with partners Volkan Polatol, COO and Ezra Parzybok, social equity partner and compliance officer, founded Budzee Delivery. Added Perrier, who is also president and CEO of the Easthampton construction company Five Star Corp. “we have already opened Dreamer Dispensary in Southampton; and are launching…Wemelco Manufacturing in Easthampton, as well as Honey Dispensary in Northampton,” which have already resulted in over sixty jobs. As a direct from wholesale model, Budzee stocks all products in house offering “a wide variety of cannabis products including flowers, concentrates, edibles, topicals, beverages, kief, pre-rolls, vapes, shake & trim; as well as some beautiful glass and accessories,” said Perrier. “We‘ve tried to cover all bases; most folks will find all their favorite items in stock.” Once customers have filled their carts and are ready to checkout, delivery is free for minimum orders of $100 before tax.

Similar to other delivery services, ordering on Budzee is simple; explains Perrier: • Go to Budzee.com, cruise the marketplace, and put your favorite items in your shopping cart. • At checkout you can choose to set up an account or continue as a guest, either way you’ll be asked to validate your ID (21+ only). • Next select your delivery method – we offer EXPRESS within 2 hours; SAME DAY within 6 hours or SCHEDULED where you pick the day and time. You will receive an email and text that your order is confirmed. • Once our driver heads out in an unmarked vehicle, you’ll be notified that your order is on its way. • When the driver arrives, consumers will need to present their ID to the driver to finalize the transaction, and he will verify that your face matches the ID used during the ordering process. • Next, he’ll collect your payment of either cash or a debit card and ask you to sign that you received the product. • Lastly, he will hand you your order and be on his way. Having already succeeded in creating jobs in the area, Perrier said his hopes for the future of Budzee is not only growth of the business, but Budzee’s engagement with the community, with “cannabis education being the main focus.” Added Perrier, “We’ll be sending out ambassadors this summer, visiting cannabis specific events as well as local community events such as farmers markets to spread the word

consumers of Massachusetts.” For more information on Budzee Delivery or, for the twenty-one and over crowd, to place an order, visit Budzee.com. CRQ SUMMER 2022

hen Massachusetts voters said yes to Question 4 in 2016, they gave the nod to legalizing cannabis in the Bay State. Since then, laws and regulations have made it possible for people at least 21 years old to possess, use, distribute and cultivate marijuana within certain restrictions and guidelines. The first two cannabis dispensaries, or stores opened on November 20, 2018 in Northampton and Leicester. Today there are some 200 dispensaries across the state. Now that they have taken root, there is a call for cannabis cafes and social clubs, where people could buy and consume cannabis. 26

CANNABISREVIEWQUARTERLY.COM

So far laws on the books have prevented those stores from opening, and even if they did, regulations set by the Cannabis Control Commission (CCC) would make it virtually impossible for those cafes to turn a profit. Mike Brais is the founder of the Massachusetts Social Consumption Advancement Coalition. He told Cannabis Review Quarterly (CRQ) legal and regulatory roadblocks have been put in place by design. “They’re atrocious. They create an unprofitable business model that a cynic would look at as designed to fail,” he says. Backers of the pro pot legislation

hoped, even intended, for legislation to legalize cannabis cafes. But Secretary of State Bill Galvin ruled while the law allows communities to reject cannabis cafes, there is no legal way to open them. Galvin says communities could opt-out or ban cannabis cafes, but they couldn’t opt-in and allow them in their cities or towns. “Question 4 legalized cannabis but did not call out cannabis cafes specifically. There was no mention of them in the ballot initiative but in verbal discussions they were referenced as a future license type. The CCC announced at some point, there would be social consumption,” says Brais.

The legislature is trying to correct what many see as a flaw in the law by passing new legislation that would specifically allow cities and towns to permit cannabis cafes. The legislation would also give local governments the power to approve these cafes without bringing the issue to voters in the form of a ballot question. The law is expected to pass and be signed by the Governor by the end of July. If the legislature does pass legislation specifically allowing for cannabis cafes to open, they may be unlikely to do so because Luzier says onerous regulations prevent these lounges from turning a profit — and he thinks this is intentional. “Some people are having a hard time walking away from cannabis prohibition,” says Will Luzier, government relations liaison for the Massachusetts Social Consumption Advancement Coalition. “People are still sensitive to the issue and reluctant to change their anti-pot posture,” Luzier told CRQ. The CCC was established to regulate the cannabis industry in Massachusetts, but critics say CCC regulations discourage anyone from opening a cannabis café. “Section 141 of CCC regulations specific to social consumption defines how those businesses can operate, how they market and what people can buy and consume in the club,” says Brais. Brais says CCC regulations ban combustion inside a lounge. That means no one can use a lighter or match to light a joint inside the café. “That means you can’t smoke cannabis in a consumption lounge. You can only vape it or consume edibles. Right there you lose 75 percent of your customer base,” says Brais. The regulations also restrict café patrons from consuming more than 20 milligrams of total active THC per day. Critics say it’s difficult if not impossible to measure THC consumption among people who smoke joints. And while 20 milligrams may get some people high, it could have little effect on regular pot

users who have built up a tolerance to cannabis. “Somebody like me who’s consuming cannabis for over twenty years – 20 milligrams doesn’t do anything for me. I wouldn’t bother going to that establishment,” says Brais. The 20 milligram limit is designed to keep patrons from getting so high they wouldn’t be able to drive or do anything else safely. Brais says just like bars that serve alcohol, cannabis cafes could monitor their guests and shut off anyone overdoing it. It’s no secret most people smoking, vaping or consuming cannabis get the munchies, but CCC regulations state lounges can only serve prepackaged food like chips and pretzels. That may not be enough to satisfy the voracious

“There are many folks who don’t have the opportunity to consume cannabis because they might live in public housing or an apartment where the landlord has prohibited smoking. Others might not like to smoke at home because someone in the house is not comfortable with it. These people need lounges where they can legally consume cannabis,” says Luzier. Brais says he expects the CCC to remove or soften regulations that act as defacto roadblocks to opening social consumption lounges — and he predicts lawmakers will pass legislation allowing communities to welcome cannabis cafes. He expects all of this to happen within the next 12-18 months. There is also the issue of public safety. Just as patrons leave bars too

“There are many folks who don’t have the opportunity to consume cannabis because they might live in public housing or an apartment where the landlord has prohibited smoking. Others might not like to smoke at home because someone in the house is not comfortable with it. These people need lounges where they can legally consume cannabis,” says Luzier. appetites of some pot users. “Cafes should be allowed to make and sell food like pizza or any other food up to full entrées. Chips and pretzels won’t satisfy that craving or need for some people. I like to smoke and then have my dinner. Some people like to pair cannabis with their food just like people pair alcohol with food,” says Brais. Social equity is also part of the debate over cannabis lounges. People living in government subsidized housing wouldn’t be able to consume pot at home because under federal law, cannabis is still illegal.

drunk to drive, the same could be true of Cannabis Cafes where customers could be too high to drive. “Studies have shown in other states where social consumption is legal, there has been no increase in traffic accidents or fatalities,” says Luzier. For now, social consumption will remain on hold while state officials iron out wrinkles in cannabis laws and regulations. Once this happens, Massachusetts will join Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Illinois, Colorado and California where social consumption is the law of the land. CRQ SUMMER 2022

Day Trip to

BRIMFIELD

Bring back a little something extra

P

ioneer Cannabis Co., a family owned and run operation, recently opened their doors at 275 Sturbridge Rd. in Brimfield. Maura Doyle, CEO, founded this business with her father, Chris Kenny. Doyle, who is a Connecticut resident, said when they began searching for a place to open a shop, cannabis was not legalized in CT. This led them to look for a town in Massachusetts that was relatively close to the line. Not only did Doyle’s family find the space in Brimfield to bring their

business to fruition, but they built the dispensary from the ground up. “My dad ran the entire year-long project, I did the painting, my husband did the floors and my mom picked out all the fixtures,” she said. Doyle described this project as a “true labor of love – an exhausting one.” When constructing and designing the building, Doyle said they wanted their dispensary to be different from others. “We wanted ours to be homey and comfortable [for customers],” she said. “We want [our customers] to hang

out with us.” She noted that they always have country music playing. On May 6, the building finally opened for business. Doyle said, “business was good” and “traffic was steady” throughout the opening weekend. “[We had] a line out the door,” she added. Pioneer’s grand opening was only a few days before the largest event in town began, the Brimfield Flea Market. Operating three times a year, in May, July and September, the flea market has a variety of vendors that attract thousands of visitors. CRQ SUMMER 2022

29

During the May show, Doyle said they received a lot of business from people heading to the flea market. Pioneer Cannabis Co. is only one mile away from the hub of the antique show. Although Pioneer is not a part of the show, Doyle said there are some dispensaries who take part in it. To make use of the close proximity and promote their new business, Doyle said they displayed large banners outside to catch the public’s eye. During the flea market, Doyle said, “Traffic [was] backed up all the way to our store.” By displaying the banners for those who are bumper to bumper, she said this attracted even more customers. From Texas to California and all the way to London, Doyle said they brought in customers from around the world. For both the vendors and the people attending the flea market, Doyle said it’s a tradition. She shared that one of her customers who was visiting the show came in from Canada. Doyle said he comes in every year and recalled that where Pioneer is now, 30

used to be a hotel that he stayed at when frequenting the flea market. Doyle noted that the weekend before the start of the flea market was also busy, with a lot of vendors stopping in, in between setting up their booths. During this busy time, Doyle noticed that a lot of customers were interested in edibles and seltzers. As Pioneer primarily does pre-rolls and flower, she said they couldn’t keep the other products in stock. “Edibles and the Levia THC Seltzers are very popular during hot weather,” said Doyle. Along with the July flea market, Doyle and her team are preparing for the September flea market. The next Brimfield Flea Market will run from Sept. 6 - 11. Doyle said they will continue to display their banners and remain hopeful in attracting even more customers as the word of Pioneer Cannabis Co. continues to spread. Doyle explained that they do not

have any cultivation. They receive their products from other cultivators. She said they tailor the menu to everyone and if they do not have a product in stock, they will order it for a customer to have within the week. “We want to be [like a] high end package store … we can get a product [if a customer wants it],” she said. “Customer service is super important to us.” Pioneer Cannabis Co. is dog friendly and offers CBD treats for four-legged friends. Whether your dog just went on a hike or spent a long day at the beach, Doyle said these treats are “perfect.” She went on to say that she uses these treats for her 120-pound dog named Rooster. “He is a pure-bred Labrador Retriever but looks more like a mini pony,” shared Doyle. “He loves swimming and running around on the beach but with his huge body, sometimes all those activities can leave him sore.” When setting up Pioneer Cannabis Co., Doyle spoke with Jonathan at BayGrown Farms in Rochester, and thought that their Hemp Bone CBG Dog Treats would be a wonderful addition to their dog-friendly shop. “While you can give the treats daily for maintenance, I instead give them to Rooster for pain relief only, on days where he’s had a lot of activity,” said Doyle. “Usually after a long day of swimming, he would normally be limping at night and even have a hard time standing up the next morning.” By giving Rooster two treats on the days and nights he’s having a hard time,

Here Comes the

SUN (burn)

STORY BY TIERA N. WRIGHT PHOTOS ISTOCK

n the immortal (well, seasonal) words of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince (too soon?), it’s “time to sit back and unwind,” because it’s summertime. As temperatures rise, the great outdoors, namely the beach, is calling. But don’t let the blissful songs of summer fool you. Sure in the moment, walking on sunshine sounds magical; but if you’re not careful, forgot or don’t apply sunscreen, the result is a sunburn, and that doesn’t feel good. Most people, at least once in their life, has experienced a sunburn or two; but if I may get technical for a moment, sunburns, as defined by Merriam-Webster.com is an “inflammation of the skin caused by overexposure to ultraviolet radiation, especially from sunlight.” As a result, sunburns are a common oc36

CANNABISREVIEWQUARTERLY.COM

currence in the summer ushering in a variety of symptoms ranging in severity. Symptoms can include peeling, blisters, feelings of nausea, and fever, as well as its signature (and highly visible) look— red skin, which can be itchy, painful, and/or warm/hot to the touch. Treatment for sunburns usually consist of cooling agents such as ice packs or cold baths/showers, as well as moisturizers, and the sunburn staple aloe vera. But these days aloe vera isn’t the only plant-based option available for those who have sunburns. Cannabis has continued to be infused into everyday life, and as the industry continues to grow and evolve there’s no telling what’s its uses will be in the future. While some studies have shown, cannabis does have medicinal purposes and is

sometimes used to reduce anxiety, help with appetite loss, and as a pain reliever; very little has been done to prove or disprove its effectiveness on sunburns. Furthermore, area dispensaries do sell CBD infused topicals such as lotions, creams and salves that are considered a great relief for post workout muscle aches and soreness. Although in its preliminary stages, according to Max Sargent in the Royal Queen Seeds blog, “Does CBD Help with Sunburn?”, there are preclinical studies, “looking into the effects of cannabinoids like CBD on dermatological inflammatory diseases.” Explains Sargent, “For example, researchers are determining if CBD impacts our skin’s immune response, or if it has the ability to fend off detrimental bacteria—im-

“Researchers are determining if CBD impacts our skin’s immune response, or if it has the ability to fend off detrimental bacteria— important factors considering the skin is our first line of defense against foreign bodies.” in the WayOfLeaf.com article, “The Best CBD Sunscreen [That Actually Works]”. “The main benefit of choosing a CBD-infused sunscreen is that you’re applying two different products to your body at the same time. While the SPF factor is working to protect skin cells against harmful UV damage, the CBD component is working to ease inflammation, thereby improving overall skin health.” Considering the expanding list of CBD products, and the cannabis industry’s growth in general, utilizing CBD as a preventative measure or even soothing sunburns is a natural extension of its applications. From CBD oils, salves and creams to gummies and infused meals, the future of CBD is looking bright, and this time we can all get a nice tan from it. Noted Sargent, “CBD’s lack of toxicity also means you can experiment with multiple approaches to see what works for you.” While common, we all know sunburns are not the inevitable outcome for a day at the beach and prevention and protection is key. So for those who enjoy taking in some much-needed Vitamin D, sunscreen is an imperative must have. Whether you prefer spray-on sunscreens or creams, we’re all aware of the buzzwords (SPF 30 or higher, water resistant, broad-spectrum) each product must have to help protection us from the sun. And with that in mind, some are now adding CBD to that list (are you surprised?). “CBD sunscreen is a fusion of traditional sunscreen with nutrient-rich CBD oil,” said Dylan Baker

Raise your glasses...

to cannabis infused beverages 38

CANNABISREVIEWQUARTERLY.COM

W

hen consumers turn to a refreshing summer drink, many crack open a cold beer. But sales of cannabis infused beverages are surging. While beer sales are in the billions of dollars, sales of cannabis beverages are in the hundreds of millions. Even so, the upstart drink is coming on strong with industry experts expecting nearly 30 percent growth each year for the next several years. To be sure, beer has a major head start in its quest to quench thirsty palates. The first solid proof of beer production comes from the period of the Sumerians around 4,000 BCE. During an archeological excavation in Mesopotamia, a tablet was discovered that showed villagers drinking a beverage from a bowl with straws. Archeologists also found an ode to Ninkasi, the patron goddess of brewing. It will take some time to bridge the gap in market share, but distillers and distributors of cannabis drinks can take heart in many positive dynamics in the consumer market. Knowing and appealing to what consumers are longing for is the first key to building a successful cannabis campaign. This is true for any new product including cannabis beverages, which are making their entrance and trying to compete in an already saturated market of spirited drinks. Consumers turn to alcohol to relax or get a buzz, but many don’t like the result of binge drinking beer — dry mouth, the spins, passing out and to be polite, we’ll call it nausea. As consumers begin educating themselves about the attributes of cannabis drinks, they are realizing infused drinks have many inherent benefits. Veteran and novice drinkers alike believe cannabis infused drinks deliver the high without the unsavory baggage of beer and other alcoholic drinks. People surveyed say they’re tired of feeling hung over after consuming large quantities of alcohol. They’re looking for a sensory, social experience that doesn’t come with the baggage of beer and other alcoholic drinks. In a society where millions of people are becoming increasingly aware of the

negative impact alcohol has on their health and well-being, many are turning to a new generation of drinks that make them high to relax or socialize but come with little downside. The cannabis industry is attracting new apostles every day, but many are slow to jump in with both feet. They prefer a slower approach. While they’re reluctant to light up and smoke pot or consume edibles, they are much more comfortable tipping a cold one and trying cannabis drinks. Veteran cannabis users are also intrigued by the weed’s liquid cousin. These consumers are using cannabis beverages to complement edibles or replace joints. The cannabis beverage industry is just discovering these consumer habits

several hours for the calming properties of edibles to take effect. Meanwhile, cannabis has a more immediate impact, with consumers getting high or buzzed with drinks in minutes, rather than hours. This also allows consumers to better track how cannabis is affecting them. Because the edible effect is so delayed, consumers think they need another dose to get high. This can lead to overconsumption. Even with its many benefits, cannabis infused drinks are fighting an uphill battle to join other drinks on store shelves. While beer, wine and liquor can be stored at room temperature, cannabis drinks must be refrigerated. This limits the number of ways the drink can be displayed. Retailers will also have to make space in their coolers for this

As consumers begin educating themselves about the attributes of cannabis drinks, they are realizing infused drinks have many inherent benefits. and market dynamics. Once makers fully absorb these facts, they’ll be in a better position to make and market their products, perhaps draining a portion of beer and booze’s huge market share. Cannabis beverages face not only the challenge of joining the party late, the beverage industry in general and beer sales specifically are tapering a bit. Manufacturers are so concerned, they’re exploring new products and markets. This gives cannabis beverages an edge because it is a stark alternative to traditional drinks and may be unique enough to convince consumers to imbibe. While medical marijuana is legal in all fifty states, drinking and smoking pot isn’t. Eighteen states have legalized cannabis for recreational use, and this presents an opportunity for infused beverages to attract consumers looking for something new to the market. Beyond the lifestyle benefits of cannabis, there is also a physiological allure within the cannabis industry. It may take

newcomer to the market. Infused drinks face another hurdle. CBD and THC are regulated differently, meaning in some cases CBD infused drinks can be sold in liquor stores and bars while THC drinks face greater limits. In some instances, they can only be sold in licensed dispensaries, depending on state and local laws. The issue of consumption is still up in the air with legislators and regulators searching for the best way to allow public consumption of cannabis. For now, cannabis infused food and drinks cannot be consumed in public spaces such as restaurants, bars or other venues. The ability to sell cannabis beverages is limited because people can consume it only in their homes. The opportunity is there for manufacturers to make and sell cannabis infused drinks, but they’ll have to navigate around obstacles that would deliver the high life to consumers.

ake sure that your gas tanks are full because we’re hitting the road for a day trip! Beginning in Springfield and heading up Route 91, there are several dispensaries located right off the highway (plus a little side trip to North Adams). Near each dispensary are many points of interest. To make sure your trip is worth it, let’s look into some of those locations along the way. Starting at Holistic Industries, 1300 Boston Rd. in Springfield, the dispensary is known as a “greenhouse of brands.” With locations across the country, Holistic has products tailored to everyone’s needs. To enhance your mood at the start of the trip and make sure it lasts, try their “DO Drops” that come in five different flavors. This will allow you to go about your day on a positive note. Only 8.5 miles away from Holistic, right off Rt. 91, is the world renown Basketball Hall of Fame. Located at 1000 Hall of Fame Ave. in Springfield, 40

the round shaped structure works to promote, preserve and celebrate all levels, players, coaches and contributors of basketball. To learn more about the game, make sure to stop in to see the exhibits, the court and more. Once your tour is complete, head to Mass Alternative Care in Chicopee. Here, you will find a Dragonfruit Summer Seasonal Seltzer with 4.86 mg of THC. The seltzer is energized with LEVIA Achieve sativa blend, allowing you to conquer whatever needs to be done, all while feeling good. The dispensary is located at 1247 East Main St. Now that your energy is ramped up, it’s time to head to the Botanic Garden of Smith College. The garden was founded over one hundred years ago by the college’s first President, Laurenus Clarke Seelye. According to their website, “A botanic garden is a collection of plants that is scientifically ordered and maintained, documented and labeled for research, conservation, public education and enjoyment.” The botanic

garden now serves as a “living museum” of New England plants and ecosystems from around the world. Located at 16 College Ln. in Northampton, the outdoor gardens and greenhouses are open to the public year-round. Driving 2.1 miles up the street, you will stumble across Turning Leaf Cannabis, at 261 King St. in Northampton. From flower to vaporizers and tinctures, the dispensary has it all. At this point of the trip, perhaps you’re looking for mental clarity in order to focus on the road and continue on your way. No need to fear, Tropical White Sangria Chews are here! With notes of pineapple and pear, the chews are crafted with a one-to-one blend of Delta-8 to Delta-9 THC – leaving you feeling energized and focused. Heading further up Rt. 91, Yankee Candle Village is an attraction for all ages. Located at 25 Greenfield Rd. in South Deerfield, the store is open daily. Visitors can make their own candles and wax hands, along with browsing the

large selection of scented candles, gift shop souvenirs, candy land and more. No matter what time of year it is, there is a room that snows every few minutes. Plus, you can visit Santa in his workshop. With so much to do, this attraction will leave you planning for your next visit. If you’re not quite ready to head back down 91 yet, one final trudge to the top will bring you to Silver Therapeutics in Williamstown. The dispensary, located at 238 Main St. is locally owned and operated, offering the highest quality cannabis. As their menu changes based on availability, Silver Therapeutics has a variety of specialty offers, including prerolls, edibles, tinctures, topicals and more. Without a doubt, this dispensary has what you need to make your journey back home. Before heading back down towards Springfield, one last attraction to visit is “ROAM,” an Xtina Parks Gallery. Located on the first floor at 230 Mass MoCA Way in North Adams, the African Wildlife Photography and Artwork Gallery is now open. According to their website, visitors can “take a safari” of the gallery, to view both small and large-scale photography, African antiques and contemporary art. During the summer months, the exhibit is open daily. To end the day trip on a “high” note, visit Pleasantrees at 422 Amity St. in Amherst. A staff favorite is their “Ice Cream Cake Pre-roll” – an indica marijuana strain made by crossing wedding cake with gelato. Leaving consumers feeling sedated and relaxed, the pre-roll is ideal for nighttime use – perfect for watching TV and falling asleep. With all of the cannabis products and memories collected along the way, you will definitely be wiped out once you arrive home. Nonetheless, if you are looking for a fun little “getaway” across the state, this is the perfect place to start. Bon voyage!

Fact vs. myth

How potent is

marijuana today? P erhaps you have been reluctant to try cannabis or marijuana due to precedents on the topic. Although are you sure that what you have heard is correct? Rather than listening to others, it is important to develop a personal opinion based on facts. For starters, let’s work to separate fact from fiction. As marijuana continues to become legalized across the United States, the psychoactive drug is becoming more accepted for medical and recreational use. With this growth, consumers have noticed that marijuana is much more potent than it used to be. According to BrainFacts.org, this realization is true. “The amount of the main psychoactive in marijuana — a chemical called tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC — has skyrocketed because of advances in plant breeding and purification over the last few decades,” said Alexis Wnuk, science writer and editor for BrainFacts. org. “This is not your parents’ marijuana, and this is definitely not your grandparents’ marijuana. People need to be 42

aware of that. Some parents might say, ‘oh, I used marijuana pretty regularly when I was a teenager and it was fine.’ But this is a different beast altogether,” she continued. In terms of its THC content, marijuana is a lot stronger today. As marijuana usage becomes more accepted, consumers might have the assumption that the drug is not dangerous. In comparison to other drugs and alcohol this could be the case, but every drug has potential of creating its own dangers for individuals who have certain susceptibilities. “For example, for people with a daily history of addiction, consuming high potency marijuana products increases their risk of developing addiction. Or if someone has a family history of schizophrenia, marijuana can increase their risk of developing psychosis at some point,” said Wnuk. Additionally, as the drug runs through the entire body, it can affect some vital organs such as the lungs and heart. “The safest use is no use. But the level of danger really depends on an individual’s health and family risk factors, as well as the

potency of the products they use and how frequently they use them,” added Wnuk. A very common myth often linked with marijuana is that the drug is not addictive. Unfortunately, this is false. “Of all the people who use marijuana, only about nine percent will meet the criteria for addiction at some point in their lives. But, if you look at people who start using marijuana as adolescents, when the brain is still developing and is quite vulnerable, that number goes up to 17 percent. And when you look at daily users, between 25 and 50 percent will develop an addiction,” said Wnuk. Although the majority of consumers will not become addicted, it is possible. Before partaking in any consumption or developing an assumption of your own, make sure you know the facts they are important.
