GUSH MINTS FLOWER

Yusef Sadiq, wholesale manager at 253, shared some of their new and upcoming product launches. The first product is Gush Mints. “Gush Mints is an indica hybrid strain, cultivated through a sweet cross of Kush Mints x F1 Durb x Gushers,” said Sadiq. “This bud brings together creamy gas flavors and sweet pine aromas to create a lusciously packed dessert of relaxation.” He shared that the product is commonly described as having a “tasty maple finish.” Gush Mints tacks on kushy candy terpenes with earthy diesel undertones to offer a “soothing high,” added Sadiq. The cost of Gush Mints is as follows: .8g pre-roll/$12, 1g pre-packed/$15, 3.5g pre-packed/$50 and 7g prepacked/$90. Cannabis and sales tax not included.

253 HAWAIIAN FIRE OG GLACIER TEK SHATTER

“Glacier TEK is a purification process leaving the shatter glossy and clear with a lovely presence of terpenes,” said Sadiq. “It is a process using clays and silica that capture different parts of the plant during extraction and leave behind a clear product.” He explained that this technique was used in the food oil

253 3:1 RELIEF CBD:THC VAPE

“Meet pure and potent cannabis vaping,” said Sadiq. “Our 3:1 ratio is three parts CBD and one part THC plus minor cannabinoids. It’s an ideal option for relaxing after a long day.” He noted that the vape is easy to carry and easier to dose. “You’ll feel more relaxed and taste the subtle notes of terpenes with every puff,” added Sadiq. The cost of this product is $35 for .5g or $65 for 1g. Cannabis and sales tax not included.

OLLARI SOLVENTLESS INFUSION PRE-ROLL

“The Ollari Solventless Infusion, named after one of Boston Bud Factory’s own staff, is a unique blend of a variety of cannabis products combined into one smooth and potent pre-roll,” shared Frank Dailey of Boston Bud Factory. He noted that no shake or trim is used in the production of any Boston Bud Factory pre-rolls – only premium cannabis flowers.

“The Ollari starts with premium cannabis flower and is then infused

with a blend of Dry Sift Kief and hash that adds levels to the amazing flavor profile,” said Dailey. “The final touch is a layer of rosin encased in a second rolling paper to prevent the pre-roll from being sticky on the outside.” He noted that the final product has a “unique flavor” and a “potent cannabinoid profile” that sets it apart from other infused prerolls. “The terpene-flavored tip adds the perfect final touch,” he said. The retail price for the Ollari is $25 plus applicable taxes.

SOLVENTLESS CARTRIDGE

“The Boston Bud Factory Solventless Cartridge is a blend of rosin and cannabis-derived terpenes that creates a smooth and all-natural vape cartridge,” explained Dailey. At Boston Bud Factory, a CO2 extraction method is used which produces a solvent-free terpene that can be collected separately from the cannabinoid extraction process. “The terpenes are strain specific and completely solvent free, so they provide a great flavor component when blended back in to make the finished solventless vape cartridge,” said Dailey.

This product does not contain any chemicals or components aside from what is derived directly from the natural cannabis plant – making it a truly chemical and solvent-less vape cartridge. “Finally, the all-natural product is packaged in a home compostable and environmentally friendly packaging ensuring that these products have the lowest possible carbon footprint,” added Dailey. The retail price for 0.5g solventless cartridges ranges from $25-$35 and is strictly dependent on raw material and cannabis pricing at the time of production. In the future, Dailey said they plan to include 1g and 2g disposable solventless cartridges. He noted that Boston Bud Factory is also working on reusable hardware that consumers could refill themselves at home.

GOLIATH: AN ENTREPRENEUR IS WINNING IN THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY

6

Brick’s has only been open for a few months in Springfield as only the third recreational dispensary in the community of more than 150,000 people, but in that time the company’s CEO and founder, Payton Shubrick has learned much.

“The market is changing and consumers are being clear about what they want and don’t want,” she said.

She sees growth of her business and competition with other cannabis retailers as a marathon, not a sprint.

“As a true mom and pop shop, it’s an exciting time now that we are open

but at the same time the race is just starting,” she added.

Shubrick represents an ideal that state legislators sold when crafting the laws governing recreational cannabis sales: a woman, a local entrepreneur and a person of color. Shubrick is running the only dispensary in Springfield that is not a large corporation with outlets in other states.

While she may represent the concept that the cannabis business is open to people wanting to start a business, the facts say those interested in going into the industry must have consider-

able financial resources.

Shubrick knows that 6Brick’s has to be different to attract a customer base and said, “I think at the end of the day it’s the philosophy we’ve had from the beginning: cannabis is part of a wellness routine.”

The reasons people are interested in cannabis frequently revolve around “stress, sleep and anxiety,” she added. She views her business as a “boutique” and she and her staff treats customers as “family members.” Online reviews indicate that approach is appreciated. Advertising and marketing are great-

ly regulated in Massachusetts for recreational cannabis sales and Shubrick said that she relies on “guerilla” marketing efforts as well as building customers through word-of-mouth. For instance, 6Brick’s has recently hosted two pop-up events in the store with cannabis suppliers and co-hosted an Ugly Sweater Christmas Party at White Lion Brewery in Springfield. The dispensary asks people to join its mailing list to learn about events and special pricing and Shubrick is excited about launching “direct communications” with customers through emails and texts.

She recently hosted 1998 Heisman Trophy winner and member of the Miami Dolphins Ricky Williams, a nationally known cannabis advocate, who now has his own line of “Highsman” cannabis products.

Being part of a community is emphasized at 6Brick’s with a bulletin board listing other local businesses and what they are doing.

Emphasizing the wellness aspect of cannabis, the dispensary works with health professionals as well to provide advice for customers interested in learning more. She noted these professionals have been working with veterans’ groups about the wellness benefits of cannabis and there are regularly scheduled “Wellness Wednesdays” at which people can privately discuss their health needs.

Shubrick noted the commonwealth is undergoing an effort to try to address the fact the costs of the business frequently rule out local entrepreneurs with a social equity fund, but cannabis retailing “takes a lot of money and favors deeps pockets.”

In her own case she noted how slowly government reacts in cannabis regulatory actions. A simple change of address from her original location to a new one took six months to process. She also expressed concerns about the rules concerning delivery services and how they could affect the profitability of such businesses.

While Massachusetts dispensaries have seen many people from neighboring states cross the border to legally

CRQ WINTER 2023 15

purchase cannabis, Shubrick knows that changes are coming.

“The reality does make you nervous,” she said. Legal recreational cannabis in New York and Connecticut will have an impact on Massachusetts businesses, she added.

According to the Connecticut state website about recreational

cannabis, “The supply chain must be entirely licensed before sales can begin, including stores, testing labs, and growers, and there must be enough growing capacity to supply the retail market. The governor has directed each state agency to work to implement the law quickly and responsibly.” Published reports have noted recreational sales may start as soon as Jan. 10.

New York media outlets, have 36 dispensaries licenses have been approved with seven of those in the Albany, NY, area. State officials believe some of those businesses may open before the close of 2022.

6Brick’s and other Massachusetts businesses will have to be competitive, Shubrick said, with better selections and prices.

Shubrick sees her involvement in this industry as an “on-going education” and that idea is reflected in how the dispensary conducts its business. 6Brick’s is located at 1860 Main St. and is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven day a week. Its website (www.6Bricks. com) lists specials and activities.

STICKY FISH LIVE RESIN BITES: I’m huge on gummies that go beyond a simple distillate infusion, and anything live resin or hash infusions are a go-to for me. These Sticky Fish Live Resin Bites that use Grease Monkey as the strain base and pack a huge natural terpene flavor along with the Lychee fruit kiss are a killer addition to my home stockpile of edibles.

- Joe Welch, Director of Operations, Canna Provisions.

OLD PAL BROWNIES: I love that Old Pal has embraced the old school origins of classic cannabis brownies. From the packaging on the box to the easy to follow instructions (if you can whisk an egg and spread this mixture in a pan you can make dosed brownies). Also my new go-to for heading to a friend’s house for dinner and bringing an adult dessert!

- Lizz Palmer, Marketing Manager, Canna Provisions.

SMASH HITS CALIFORNIA RAISINS: Besides the fact it is our High Times Cannabis Cup award winning strain (via our live hash rosin collab), this has become one of my ongoing go-to’s in my head stash. Dense nugs and super rich creamy fruit flavor pops in this flower line. I’ll take this one all day.

- Greg “Chemdog” Krzanowski, Smash Hits Director of Cultivation, Canna Provisions

- Jana LaFrance, Training and Development Manager, Canna Provisions

CRISPY COMMISSION WAX: Smash Hits Urkle x Tres Dawg x Stardawg (Corey Cut): Killer and consistency (which is a touch more like Badder than wax to my eyes which was why I liked it, and it’s better suited to dabbing than as a bowl topper. Pleasant golden blonde color and amazing hybrid effects with the three Smash Hits strains in there.

- Josh Lilienthal, Retail Supervisor, Canna Provisions.

SMASH HITS MEMBER BERRY: Been all about the Member Berry since it dropped, and am hooked on the super sweet tropical fruit and citrus wrapped in skunky funk and dark green buds twinkling with frost. Also a huge fan of the fact we can get these in clone form to grow at home too!

Valentine’s Day

As the holiday season ends and our 2023 fitness vows fade in the rear-view mirror, there remains one holiday poised to inflame our hearts with passion and cholesterol. What began as a Christian feast day intended to honor martyrs, Valentine’s Day has evolved into a celebration of romance characterized by trigger happy cherubs and heart shaped candies. Almost two thousand years ago the 3rd century Catholic Saint Valentine was beheaded for taking a stand against the Roman empire. The Romans believed that marriage was distracting men from joining the army. To solve the problem, the government banned marriage altogether. But Saint Valentine would have none of it. He continued to perform illegal marriages until he was caught and beheaded. Today we remember Saint Valentine as a martyr who died for romance and love, earning him the title of patron saint of courtly love.

As a side gig, he was also the saint of asthma (It’s true, Wikipedia it), possibly reflecting his romantic ability to take one’s breath away.

Although Saint Valentine probably didn’t consume cannabis, there is evidence suggesting that his Roman

ON A HIGH NOTE WITH THESE SIX PRODUCTS

contemporaries did. Ancient Roman doctors used cannabis to enhance romantic desire and repel mosquitoes. Regardless of the accuracy of ancient Roman science, we’ve put together a list of products that are sure to enhance your romance, but no promises about keeping the mosquitoes away.

1. THE FIX 1 to 1 Balm - 400mg (available

at NETA)

According to researchers at the Lambert Center for the Study of Medicinal Cannabis, our most intimate body parts have high levels of cannabinoid receptors. The means that cannabis has the power to enhance intimacy with your partner. The Fix is a great topical balm with high CBD content that can also enhance sensation. For an unforgettable Valentine’s Day, be sure that you and your partner generously lather up with 1 to 1 Balm or jump into a whole bathtub full of it.

2. Mmmmmm Chocolate

Insa’s premium chocolate creations

Chocolate has long been associated with romance even before Johnny Depp sexualized it on the cover

of Chocolat. Who can forget that look on his face as he seductively tongues a chocolate in front of his sweetheart. This Valentine’s Day you can recreate the iconic movie moment with one of the premium chocolates offered at Insa. Insa cultivates its very own brand of chocolate made by superior chocolatiers who have curated a sweeping menu of flavors including milk chocolate, dark chocolate mint, cherry cheesecake, and double caramel sea salt. FERNWAY PRESENTS Live Resin Carts

Fernway has been changing the way the public views vaporizers since their creation and products hit shelves in February of 2021. Dedicating their focus on making the best vaporizers for people celebrating the good life, they work diligently to procure and create top shelf quality cannabis to produce their vaporizers to fit all types of consumers, from different sizes to flavors and strains, all of which are recyclable. Bringing their own dropboxes to dispensaries across the state caused many visitors to take notice of the care & attention-to-detail this company has for their products,

environment, and consumers. With the extra attention, budtenders, and fans of Fernway’s products have long asked the question, “When will Live Resin cartridges be available”?

Quietly, Fernway has been working on mastering Live Resin cartridges to provide to their consumers the same quality of products they have come to love, but with a new twist. This is a step in the direction of making vaporizers more popular amongst the average cannabis users. When asked about the commitment & length of the creation of Live Resin carts, Liam O’Brien, a representative of Fernway,

said “this has been in the works for a while. We had no doubt that there has been significant demand for a Fernway Live Resin cartridge, but we have had to balance that with our responsibility to deliver a product of the highest quality and widespread availability that our customers have come to expect from us. We don’t take shortcuts. We are very deliberate about the live resin that goes into our cartridges. Even if it’s more work and investment on our end to guarantee that, it’s worth it since it lets us deliver on our promise to customers”.

Live Resin carts are made by immediately flash-freezing fresh cannabis flower & sugar leaves to protect the full spectrum of cannabinoids & original cannabis terpenes, which normally would be destroyed in the butane extraction process because of the temperature & extraction method. By keeping all the freshly harvested flower frozen, it minimizes the opportunity of losing sensitive terpenes to heat & light. This is important because the plant’s full profile now can be expressed

form, Fernway plans on releasing this new product in both their Traveler pens and full-gram cartridges in the new future. The packaging also gets a bit of a new appearance. Crystal Childs, the Director of Marketing for Fernway gave us a little insight on what to expect, “The packaging is beautiful, black craft paper with silver foil. By January it should be across the state in dispensaries”. Anywhere that previously sold products from Fernway will be carrying their latest creations, and those

when created into vaporizer form, giving the user a more flavorful experience, closely related to smoking dried cannabis flower. “This is connoisseur-grade oil because it contains the full spectrum of terpenes and cannabinoids from the source flower, which means that each cartridge contains that strain’s full flavor profile and range of effects”. Consumers of their products are often looking for an uplifting change in their daily perception without the smell and process of rolling flower. With this new release, those consumers can receive the same terpenes and cannabinoids they love from dried flower in a new way. Without giving away their recipe or formula, Fernway has proudly boosted about using the finest quality cannabis and their new release is no exception. Their seasonal flavors, like Chocolate Mint and Pumpkin Spice, were a big hit amongst consumers even though they were only available in certain sizes. Consumers were happy to get their hands on a product with a taste like no other.

While the Live Resin cartridges will first be released in half-gram

living in the Greater Boston area, may be eligible for delivery. A new year means Fernway will be bringing in a new product to showcase to Massachusetts. Although they have not invented the idea of Live Resin, their company hopes to push & exceed the boundaries of the method to elevate good experiences into great ones. Liam O’Brien was thrilled to announce the strains that’ll first be available in Live Resin, “Our first four strains, which offer a curated selection of the freshest and best-tasting live resin in Massachusetts. The strains are: Mochi and Buddha’s Hand, which are both sativas; Rainmaker, which is a hybrid; and Black Triangle, which is an indica”. Although Fernway plans on dropping new strains throughout the year, their products are unique and small batch, making it tough to find all strains. The full breakdown of all the strains can be seen on their website and if you follow their Instagram (@Fernway) you could be the first to hear about the release of upcoming strains and products!

How to manage a microbusiness

When it comes to opening and operating a dispensary – like any business –there are many requirements and hurdles along the way. Oftentimes, people have an entire team to collaborate with and work out any challenges that may arise. However, when it comes to running a microbusiness, everything is different.

Florence Cannabis Co., a licensed cannabis microbusiness, was founded by Chris Rivers in 2020.

As a married father of three, Rivers said, “I’ve always been the sports dad.” Whether it be driving to a practice, attending games or even going skiing, most of his time was spent with his children.

Aside from being a father, Rivers works full-time as a software engineer for a company in Albany. Be-

fore COVID-19, Rivers would often commute to the office. “During the [coronavirus] pandemic, once I started stacking up the extra hours I had available – I mean my commute time over the course of a week – I would spend between eight to 12 hours in the car. Add up all those soccer practice times, I was looking at another work week on my hands,” he said.

To put that time to good use while everyone stayed home and quarantined, Rivers decided to venture down the path of cannabis.

For some time, Rivers has been a homegrower. “I’ve always liked what I’ve grown better than what I was given at the dispensaries,” he said. As a result, he decided to open Florence Cannabis Co. in his hometown of Florence. He explained that the main office is in his home and the facility is about two

CRQ WINTER 2023 27
BY LAUREN LeBEL PHOTOS NATE BLAIS

and a half miles down the road. He noted that the proximity to the facility played a major part in the process as he still works full time at the software company, remotely. Rivers said, “it was luck” to have found a facility that was available, zoned correctly and had a structure to build out to a viable grow.

“Finding a facility to retrofit is pretty difficult and then obviously building is expensive so it was a stroke of luck with the availability of the building,” he added.

Through a connection with mutual friends, Rivers was introduced to Tyler Snyder, who has years of experience in the cannabis industry. Rivers said

Snyder was affected by the coronavirus pandemic as well because the large grow facility he had been working at shut down. After meeting, Rivers said they started working together and looked at different genetics that Snyder was familiar with.

“[From] working with Tyler and starting to poke around a little bit, it started to kind of come together as far as what we wanted to do with the process of growing,” explained Rivers. This includes how it would be grown, how to give it nutrients, conducting the post-harvest process and so on.

Rivers said he and Snyder had similar approaches to growing which

“worked out in that regard.” Snyder now serves as the director of cultivation at Florence Cannabis. Co.

In addition to Rivers and Snyder, the Florence Cannabis Co. team has one other member – an Army veteran named Phil. “We’re a pretty close, tight knit unit,” said Rivers. “The three of us pretty much do all the growing. Tyler leads it and Phil does a lot of the work. I do all the licensing and operational stuff.”

He continued, “I do sales, marketing, shipping and I’ll help out with the grow as well. We all pitch in everywhere.” When it’s time to package orders for the week, Rivers said the three of them sit down and fill orders all day.

As Florence’s approach is different from other dispensaries, Rivers said they take a bit of a “home grow” approach to their operation.

All the products at Florence Cannabis Co. are handcrafted. Rivers shared that it includes a lot of basic fundamentals: a good environment, growing in soil, good organic nutrients, maintaining the plants and plenty of water and light.

“Our motto is: ‘Keep things pretty basic and take care of the fundamentals – the genetics always help – so that’s kind of what we’ve been sticking to,’” he said.

Currently, Florence Cannabis Co. has five different strains on the menu that are available in different sizes and configurations. In total, there are about 16 to 20 products.

With the microbusiness license, Rivers said he can grow up to 5,000 square feet of canopy and manufacture, meaning they can make extracts, tinctures, edibles and more. He noted that they also get an endorsement to transport their own product. “Transportation is very expensive so that’s a big benefit,” he added. “What we cannot do is open a retail shop. As the industry sort of matures, the model is to become vertically integrated,” said Rivers. This means that if you are a brand, you have your own product and then you have a retail outlet to sell it. “That’s just kind of how the progression goes,” he said.

28 CANNABISREVIEWQUARTERLY.COM

Rivers went on to say, “The successful industries going across the state have been vertically integrated companies that are able to control their whole supply chain from beginning to end, whereas we’re at the mercy of wholesale prices and competition which is pretty big right now.”

For a microbusiness like Florence Cannabis, Rivers said there are few resources to assist with marketing and sales. Therefore, to get the company’s name and products out on the shelves, Rivers hops in the car with menus in hand and delivers them to dispensaries across the state. Other methods include attending conferences and cold calling to name a few. Because of his efforts, Florence Cannabis products can now be found in six Massachusetts dispensaries.

Without the retail aspect, Rivers believes it “sort of hinders” the growth of a microbusiness.

When starting a small microbusiness, Rivers said they were lenient in some respects. However, to obtain the

license, being a Massachusetts resident was a requirement. “It made sense,” he said. “I’m truly a microbusiness. I don’t have any kind of experience in the cannabis industry. I have some experience with business as far as technology and software, so they gave me kind of a break to be able to get into this industry which is awesome.”

One downfall to a microbusiness, as mentioned by Rivers, is that they “kind of cap you off.” For instance, he explained that if he wanted to expand his canopy to 10,000 square feet, he would have to sell his microbusiness license and reapply for a new license. Based on the way the regulations are currently written, it doesn’t assist with expansion.

Nonetheless, Rivers said there are many advantages to a microbusiness as well. “The advantages are that we can manufacture without having to get another license and we can transport our own products. Also, we have discounted licensing fees,” he shared. “There are a lot of advantages to it which is

why I chose that.”

When it comes to licensing, Rivers said a microbusiness is put in a faster queue. If there’s a big multi-state operator waiting to have something looked at – depending on where they are in the process – a microbusiness can be bumped up before them.

“It is a really good program I think, but like all things, there’s definitely room to improve it,” said Rivers.

For the next year, Florence Cannabis Co. is going to continue to add products such as keef and refine strains that are offered. With the ability to run six different strains, Rivers said they are going to focus on what strains they want to grow and produce more products in the same space.

“Beyond that we have some space that’s not built out so once we get our feet under us and have everything filled up in the current space, I have the ability to triple the square footage for my canopy so that’s really the main goal,” he concluded.

SHAKE IT UP! DIY HOME INFUSED THC MASSAGE OILS + TOPICALS

There’s a good chance that somewhere between the onset of New Year resolutions involving a return to fitness and a healthier lifestyle. Adherence to said plans are always the rub, so good luck to those setting forth on a new year, new you vibe.

Helping the new you recover in times of muscle aches it’s good to have a little cannabis infused topical or body lotion, thus ideally avoiding the aforementioned rub. Oh, speaking of rubbing, you haven’t had a sensual massage between lovers till you’ve tried it with some infused massage oil.

Either way, check out these two ways to use pre-ground cooking shake (from Smash Hits cannabis in this case) as well as easily found distillate or full-spectrum RSO found at stores like Canna Provisions in Lee and Holyoke.

INGREDIENTS: HOW YOU’LL MAKE IT

• pre-ground cooking shake

• or full-spectrum RSO

• coconut oil or favorite massage oil

TWO Versions

Version 1: I prefer with actual cooking shake and infusing that into coconut oil and a very accurate Crock Pot or slow cooker. Keep it low - below 200 degrees on the warm setting or a copper cooktop. Place the cooking shake in a cheese cloth, seal it with a twist tie or cooking twine, and put that into the oil. Cook for 6-8 hours. Remove cloth. If any loose material comes through the cloth, you can just restrain using a sieve. Finish by adding herbal or choice essential oils. Add different things and you’ll have a lovely body butter for using in sensual or recovery massage. (One of my favorites cooking shake is Smash Hits).

Find it at: smashhitscannabis.com and cannaprovisions.com

Version 2: The faster method is using distillate or full spectrum RSO in a syringe that we sell. For me I’d use a small 8 to 12 oz jar of coconut oil, add the whole distillate or RSO contents in there (run the syringe under warm water to loosen its consistency in the tube for easier removal). Keep it at really low heat until it’s all blended and then you’re ready to go. Infused coconut oil as a base for body butters or just as an infused addition to your pantry.

THCV and the growth of minor cannabinoids

Incorporated into the products we all know and love are a variety of minor cannabinoids. While one may work for some, it may not work for everyone.

An up-and-coming minor cannabinoid that will likely be seen in more products is THCV. Leading the fad is COAST Cannabis Co., as the dispensary was the first in Massachusetts to launch a gummy with THCV.

Before launching the product in summer 2021, COAST Cannabis Co-Founder Angela Brown said a lot of research was required.

THCV, also known as “skinny weed,” is still relatively new. Like any minor cannabinoid, its effects may differ from person to person. For Brown, she said, “I had a lot of personal success utilizing THCV.”

She continued, “I wasn’t introduced to THCV because I was looking for the effects of it. I got introduced to it just because there was a certain strain that I was really enjoying in a concentrated form that was typically a higher THCV strain – it was Durban Poison.” After consuming it, Brown recalled having a lot of energy, curved hunger and motivation

to accomplish her tasks.

“I personally started going on a workout journey and I was noticing that by using the THCV and consuming it, it was giving me that pre workout motivation that a pre workout supplement had given me,” shared Brown. With increased energy and focus, she said the experience is what everyone wants to have when working out.

“At that moment, the lightbulb really went off,” said Brown.

When she entered the world of cannabis, her idea and focus was for sleep and digestion. “I came into cannabis

34 CANNABISREVIEWQUARTERLY.COM

being introduced to it as a way for things at night: how to make you feel better, relaxation. And then here I was consuming cannabis, and it was making me do the opposite of relax. I was going out, I was getting stuff done,” she said. “It really made me realize how magical cannabis was and how there was so much more to the plant than I even realized.”

As Brown’s years of being a consumer turned into being an entrepreneur and launching COAST Cannabis, she shared that she always had the desire to bring more cannabinoids to the frontline. “As someone who got introduced to these specific cannabinoids – CBN and THCV – I knew what magical healing powers they had,” she said.

To bring those attributes to the adult use side, COAST launched Raspberry Lime THC:THCV:CBG Gummies. Increasing energy levels, productivity and combating the dreaded munchies, the gummies can be used to take on any day.

Right now, the Raspberry Lime gummy is the only product with THCV offered by COAST. Working with about 170 stores across the state, Brown said most, if not all, have brought in their Raspberry Lime products.

In 2021, COAST also released a CBN and CBG product. “Over a year later, those two gummies became and still remain our top two selling items,” said Brown. When dispensaries sell out, she shared that customers call and email to find out where the products can be found.

“It’s really proving to us that customers want more than just THC and customers really want products that work and that’s what we’re committed to creating – not just a product that’s going to sell – but a product that’s going to work and it’s going to do exactly what we say it’s going to do,” said Brown.

“We believe, as a company, holistically using the minor cannabinoids is exactly what gets you that effective product,” she added.

As a consumer first, Brown said she looks at products and asks herself, “What would I want to use? What would I want to see in the stores?” She explained that COAST staff operates the same way. “It’s not ‘what’s going to sell and what’s going to make us money?’ No, what do customers actually want and need?” Brown said, “They don’t need another THC gummy. They need something that’s going to put them to sleep when they say sleep or give them that boost of energy that they’re looking for and that’s really our motivation.”

On the horizon, Brown said COAST is looking to roll out a chocolate product with CBN, as their only CBN product is in gummy form. She noted that they have been receiving a lot of requests about sleep time, but for those who don’t enjoy gummies, this could be an alternative.

As THCV continues to grow, more products are made and consumers learn about it, Brown expressed her excitement for the future of the minor cannabinoid.

Before incorporating cannabis into your life, especially if it involves a lifestyle change, always make sure to consult a physician.

Shas been used for its beneficial effects. Compared to conventionally produced CBD products, its active ingredients are much different. For instance, conventional cannabis extracts use low temperatures and do not contain the richer diversity and balance of cannabinoids.

Real Isolates, a family-owned biotech company based out of Beverly, was recently issued a United States patent for the extraction of cannabinoids and other compounds from cannabis smoke.

“Smokenol™” is the official name of the extracted oil created by this method. It is described as “rich in common and rare cannabinoids and enables a new category of oral, topical and inhaled cannabis products.”

Essentially, the process involves creating smoke/vapor with heat and selectively

special filter. The solventless method is a simpler and safer alternative to CO2 or hydrocarbon extraction.

Real Isolates Vice President and Co-Founder Andy Westerkamp said, “A majority of consumers prefer the effects of smoking.”

He explained, there are three reasons why smoking and edibles feel different: absorption, metabolism and “a third reason nobody seems to talk about - the high temperature we use from smoking transforms cannabinoid profiles significantly.”

While most extracts are created at low temperatures, this creates extracts that do not represent the profiles consumed from smoking or vaping. “Our hypothesis was that the temperatures used when vaping and smoking are creating a different effect profile which is largely re-

Westerkamp. “Our research supports that.”

Real Isolates created a filter to selectively capture compounds of interest from the smoke/vapor for use in products like edibles, vapes and topicals, to name a few.

“Now the millions of people that can’t smoke, shouldn’t smoke or have concerns about smoking due to chronic respiratory conditions – or other reasons – have an option to consume these unique profiles in another form,” explained Westerkamp.

When using THC forward input material, the Smokenol™ process will create extracts that are CBN forward and contain other cannabinoids such as THC, THCV, CBD, CBND, CBG, CBC, CBT and CBL. Other THC derivatives are also included like EXO, delta 8,

delta 10 and more.

“What is more important than the compounds themselves is the natural formulation and ratios of them in the smoke,” said Westerkamp. “There needs to be much more research on the exact effects of these different cannabinoids, but consumer feedback would suggest that the combinations found in Smokenol™ extracts will feel much more like the effects expected from smoking/vaping.”

In the new year, Westerkamp believes that there will be an increased need and interest in differentiating product offerings.

“Smokenol™ processing is easy, affordable and creates a completely unique profile that will not be replicated with other extraction methods,” he said. “With price compression of THC and flower, we believe Smokenol™ extraction will be an attractive addition to processing facilities that want to create new and valuable offerings that their competition cannot create without Smokenol™.” Now that Smokenol™ obtained patent protection in the United States, it will soon be protected in several other major

cannabis markets internationally.

Westerkamp said, “This will be an excellent opportunity to increase brand recognition, thought leadership and revenue for brands, and ultimately address the growing surplus issue that plagues the industry.”

share in the coming year – stay tuned for updates,” he concluded.

Real Isolates licenses Smokenol™ to product manufactures. Examples of hemp-derived topicals and tinctures can be found at: profoundnaturals.com.

Additionally, he assured that the Real Isolates team is always in the lab improving the standard operating procedure and business models that will work with their partners.

KIND OF A BIG DEAL

Kingston Kind is taste of Jamaica and motivation in this very special flower from Smash Hits cannabis

There exists an entire lane of cannabis consumer well aware of the sheer range of high quality flower available across the Commonwealth. Some don’t. Some yearn for something that meets them where they are in terms of cannabis as life enhancement, something that motivates them and provides a lot of active-life uplift, but also provides a shelter from the inner storms of the day. Some don’t yearn for that.

Proving it’s a fine thing to yearn when the yearning’s good, get your senses ready for Kingston Kind, the very special line of landrace cannabis with mysterious-yet-confirmed Jamaican lineage, only procured through Smash Hits cannabis from Canna Provisions. And if you hear it from Kingston Kind megafan and Canna Provisions COO/co-owner, Erik Williams, you may find yourself running for the nearest shelf where the high-CBD and terp-tastic flower can be found.

“This is a motivational weed,” says Williams. “I look at cannabis as a tool for life enhancement and this enhances my life and my day unlike any other strain. I’m

calm and focused, I’m motivated - mentally and physically - and I have focus. I can do computer work and sustained focus just as much as I can mindlessly shovel my driveway… and enjoy it!”

That full body effect and uplifting mental focus impact is thanks to Kingston Kind being grown for its impressive high CBD - which many consumers have reported supercharges the overall wellness effects - but it’s the fireworks of island scents of lemon and sweet citrus, turned earth, and shaved peppercorn that really delivers for fans of sun-grown island cannabis flavors.

In the end, the balance of CBD and THC - and the terpene profile - makes this a truly special Jamaican flower grown right in the Berkshires.

“We tested this across several batches until we were sure this phenotype was a true 1:1 strain,” said Patrick Presto, Smash Hits production Manager. “It’s unusual to find something like this but that’s what makes it so special.” Also making it special is that it’s the chosen flower of the 5-pack Little Steven’s Underground Apothecary Communion Prerolls, which

Canna Provisions and Smash Hits cannabis is the exclusive partner of. They threw a release party and private live music social-consumption event in Framingham in December of 2022 to commemorate the launch.

“When we first partnered with Meg and Erik at Canna Provisions we discussed wanting to focus on the wellness aspects of cannabis and agreed [to] a higher CBD strain,” says Steven Van Zandt. “It was important to make it accessible to people who maybe haven’t smoked in a long time or were intimidated by some of the stronger weed. We think this is a great introduction for people who want to try it.”

Kingston Kind is found at Canna Provisions stores in Lee and Holyoke, as well as select retailers carrying Smash Hits around Massachusetts. www.smashhitscannabis. com www.cannaprovisions.com

HOW CANNABIS CAN HELP THE

Weekend Athlete

As our understanding of Cannabis rapidly expands, one arena in which Cannabis is being praised for it’s beneficial uses is in sports medicine. Nicole Foss, President-Elect at American Cannabis Nurses Association, is at the forefront of Cannabis research in nursing and has seen the benefits as applied to Sports Medicine firsthand. Nicole Foss met with us and spoke about her experience with ACNA, and about how Cannabis can help the weekend athlete.

What is your role at ACNA?

My current role at the American Cannabis Nurses Association (ACNA) is President-Elect. This is a four-year term in which I spend one year being mentored by the current President, two years as President, and one year as past-President. I am also the coChair of the Education Committee, which focuses on sharing accurate cannabis research to nurses, patients, and other health care providers.

ACNA Mission: To advance excellence in cannabis nursing practice through advocacy, collaboration, education, research, and policy development.

What has been your focus at ACNA?

In my role as President-Elect, I am working with our Board of Directors to

develop a new strategic plan, focused on our efforts to advance cannabis nursing. I am also intimately involved with planning our annual Conference, which will be held in Denver in May 2023. The programming of the conference includes Continuing Education on cannabinoid research, policy development, and the endocannabinoid system. In addition to our events and normal activities, the ACNA is also working on the Scope and Standards of a credentialed cannabis nurse specialty. It’s quite impressive for a volunteer-run non-profit.

How is Cannabis being used to benefit Sports Medicine, or the weekend athlete?

Cannabis has a unique place in Sports Medicine. There is research supporting cannabinoids use to enhance sleep

and improve mood or focus. However, there is no research supporting performance enhancement (at least in a traditional sense). Most experts in the area agree there are pros and cons to athletes wanting to use cannabis, either THC products or hemp-based products. There is research supporting that THC dominant cannabis may delay soft tissue injury recovery in athletes.

Other research supports the use of compounds, like Cannabidiolic Acid (CBDA), that may work on the same pathways as traditional Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs). Compounds like CBDA may reduce the use of NSAIDs in athletes and therefore mitigate the risk associated with prolonged use.

CRQ WINTER 2023 39

What types of products are best to use for athletes?

This depends on the athlete, of course, as each persons’ endocannabinoid system is wired differently.  Some athletes prefer THC for a long run, while others prefer a hempbased product that can potentially ease Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) and raise their mood. Using both hemp and THC cannabis products require some self-exploration and experimentation. The best option is to talk with a knowledgeable health care provider who can help you calibrate your cannabis use. There are many products that contain ratios of non-psychoactive compounds (CBDA, CBD, CBGA, CBG) that may work excellent for recovery from prolonged endurance or heavy lifting activities.

Can athletes benefit from CBD or THC? And how?

Research does not clearly unveil the full list of benefits CBD and THC have for athletes. In fact, what one paper may support another may dispute.  However, anecdotal feedback from patients’ stories and advocacy within the Sports Medicine and Professional Athlete associations unveil quite a different picture. Benefits clearly exist for this population.

Are there benefits to playing sports after consuming THC / and or CBD?

There may be individual benefits, and as cannabis stigma is dissolving in professional sports such as hockey, athletes are being transparent of their cannabis use and how it aids in their performance and recovery. Athletes have reported better focus during training, reduced anxiety performance

before a game, and reduced pain after injury when using non-psychoactive hemp, specifically CBDA, products.

For pain relief, what benefits do CBD and THC have?

There is minimal peer-reviewed research that has determined the actual benefits. However, anecdotal feedback from patients and cannabis consumers overwhelmingly shows that relief from chronic and some forms of acute pain may result from cannabis use.

Pain is a complex experience and may be altered with the use of cannabinoids. Far beyond CBD and THC, the class of acidic cannabinoids (CBDA, CBGA, THCA) are being heavily researched in this area. Most research on the topic supports a ratio of cannabinoids (CBD and THC) depending on the pain relief needed (or the type of injury) alongside the use of other cannabis plant compounds, including terpenes. The key factor researchers cannot seem to determine is the amount of CBD is needed for pain relief. Often for pain and other complex issues the dose of regular CBD far exceeds that which is available in consumer products.

Created in Florida, Trulieve has now become one of the biggest cannabis distributors in the country by expanding into both the recreational and medicinal markets for states like Florida, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Georgia, West Virginia, Connecticut, Arizona, Maryland, and California. Being one of the largest cannabis companies in the United States, their plans do not consist of slowing down their expansion. The Massachusetts Marketing Manager Shelia Fay happily answered some of our questions about the company’s plans in 2023. She reiterated “Trulieve is poised for accelerated growth and expansion… our Framingham, MA location is set to expand from adultuse only sales to include medical cannabis sales.” The company is looking for new ways to innovate products and bring “firsts” to the cannabis industry, like being the first company on the East Coast to exclusively sell Khalifa Kush. A strain created and marketed by Wiz Khalifa, an entrepreneur, and Hip Hop Artist, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Although, their medicinal locations in Florida, Maryland, Arizona, and Pennsylvania will carry that exclusive strain, Fay assured us there are big plans for Massachusetts residents to enjoy in the new year.

In February 2023, Massachusetts residents can purchase two different new lines of products from Trulieve. Their Roll One brand will consist of a “wide variety of good indoor-grown quality cannabis classics… It’s good quality at everyday value.” According to their website, this new lineup of products is for consumers who aren’t buying into the fancy names or percentages of THC. Roll One will come in ready-to-roll pouch packaging with a range of sizes; Pre-rolls, ground flower, and whole cured flowers in 3.5g for $20. Perfect for those looking for simplicity. Delivering flower that is ready for consumption is helpful for consumers because it allows less steps to be taken to enjoy the

...and Growing

product recently purchased. For consumers who want to enjoy flavorful terpenes at a reasonable value, their Modern Flower is a different take on cured flower. According to their website, they will be packaging and selling both Buds and Smalls. The Smalls will consist of smaller popcorn flower that is easier to break-up and quicker to consume, while the Buds are going to be the same size flowers consumers know and love. Selling Smalls in their own packages, benefits both the consumer and the retailer because there will be a distinct difference between the size of the flowers. Consumers will no longer be disappointed when purchasing 3.5g containers and opening the lid to find a bunch of tiny popcorn nugs. This allows Trulieve to focus on packaging what the industry refers to as grade A looking flower inside of their Buds bags. They will continue to sell their Cultivar Collection and TruFlower for premium flower, but this new collection is at a new price tier, allowing more consumers the opportunity to search for a price range that will fit their budget.

When asked about the new genetics being released to the public from Trulieve, Fay was happy and proud to announce, “We are excited to bring new genetics into the market after our cultivation team grew and tested nearly 30,000 seeds in a recent pheno hunt.” Although we were not given any names of these mysterious genetics, growing new genetics means, the company will be able to offer new strains to the public. What that also means is their clone program will

have new strains for home cultivators to try. Honeygold, Wedding Gift, & Hammock Daddy are new clones available to purchase come Spring 2023. These three strains have been available to the public already when purchasing their Cultivar Collection, but now consumers can grow their favorite strains in the comfort of their home.

Last year, Trulieve became one of the first Multi-State Operators (MSO) in the Massachusetts cannabis industry to sell their genetics to the public. There was concern of consumers buying clones and never returning to the dispensary, but now after several months of selling clones, their CEO Kim Rivers publicly stated, “We’re delivering on our promise to meet cannabis consumers wherever they are in their level of experience, as well as our commitment to expanding access to the plant as we continue to grow in the Massachusetts market.” New strains will be dropping throughout the year in-store and online, to stay up to date with any new information, be sure to follow them on social media to get the latest announcements.

When purchasing any products from Trulieve in early 2023, consumers can insert the five-digit SKU followed by a ten-digit batch number on their container to find specific lab results for their products, revealing the same information their cultivators and lab technicians see before products hit the shelves. This is revolutionary to those connoisseurs who wish to know the small details of what they purchased. Just visit Trulieve.com/discover/product-test-search

Can cannabis enhance your workout?

As we embark on a new year, resolutions have been made. For everyone, those resolutions look different. However, one common resolution that many seem to take on – even if it only lasts about one month – is improving physical fitness. Whether that means joining a gym or creating healthy eating habits, there are many ways to accomplish a desired goal.

If you think you have tried it all, maybe you haven’t. Perhaps there is a missing piece that will assist you in more ways than one. What is that missing piece you ask? The answer is cannabis.

For decades, it has been believed that cannabis use makes people more tired, lazy and couchbound. However, through a recent study done at the University of Colorado, researchers asked: “What if instead of making people lazy, marijuana could actually get users to engage in more physical activity than they normally would?” (Healthline).

The study, which was published in Frontiers in Public Health, included data from over 600 cannabis users. “The average age of users was 37.5 and was split almost down the middle in terms of sex, with slightly more males than females,” (Healthline). The findings revealed that over 80 percent of respondents endorsed using some form of cannabis either directly before or after exercise.

According to Healthline, “Getting high and exercising also resulted in more physical activity as well.” The article continued, “Even after controlling for demographic

factors like age and gender, co-users on average took part in 43 more minutes of aerobic exercise per week and 30 more minutes of anaerobic exercise, such as weightlifting.” Based on the study, clues reveal that marijuana consumption increases level of motivation and enjoyment, which are both crucial in physical fitness.

Another common myth tied to cannabis use is the munchies. While it is true – marijuana does activate neurons in the brain that typically shut down cravings –there are different strains of cannabis that have different effects on these neurons. “THC may increase appetite, but CBD helps carbohydrate metabolism, fasting insulin and metabolic function, mitigate and curb cravings – they work synergistically,” said Junella Chin, an interactive medical physician who specializes in medical cannabis and osteopathic neuromuscular medicine. “Having a cannabis formulation that is balanced in THC:CBD or dominantly CBD, is helpful in minimizing the munchies,” (Men’s Journal).

When it comes to eating healthy or dieting, it is also believed that an athlete or someone looking to achieve a fitness goal will be more inclined to make better eating decisions. Through a study in the American Journal of Medicine, it has been found that marijuana users have a lower BMI than their clean counterparts (Men’s Journal).

Whether or not you are new to working out, being physically active can cause soreness and pain. While some trainers may recommend stretching or drinking more water, others recommend turning

to cannabis. “Marijuana can alleviate pain caused by everything from chronic pain to acute pain from muscle spasms,” (Muscle and Fitness).

“Societal norms shaped my thinking about marijuana, but it doesn’t take much digging into studies to find that cannabis compounds are anti-inflammatory, stress reducing, antioxidative and pain mediating, to name just a few benefits,” said San Francisco-based trainer Zach Scioli. After suffering an injury and being prescribed several painkillers, Scioli said he quickly realized the toxicity and switched to CBD and THC. “Looking back, it was the best choice I could have made,” he added (Muscle and Fitness).

Going hand and hand with physical health is mental health. Despite what some may believe about marijuana impacting brain function – it could be the opposite. When it comes to working out, fitness experts have shared that weed helps them “get in the zone.” Also, it can enhance one’s overall focus and reduce anxiety.
