Research Australia extends its congratulations to the incredible 2018 award winners ... GREAT AUSTRALIAN PHILANTHROPY AWARD The Bill and Iris Burges Trust
PETER WILLS MEDAL Laureate Professor Nicholas Talley AC, University of Newcastle
William and Stephen Burges established The Bill and Iris Burges Trust in 2003 through the University William Burges of Newcastle, in honour of their parents who devoted much of their lives to the betterment of the Newcastle area. The trust supports a Professorship in Medical Sciences, which carries a special responsibility to provide leadership and foster excellence in research, teaching and professional activities within medical sciences at the University and in the community. The Burges brothers William and Stephen represent the second generation of a family actively engaged in giving back to their community since 2003. They continue to give generously to ensure support for health and medical research and to create an enduring link between their family and the city of Newcastle.
He and his team identified a genetic contribution to IBS and functional dyspepsia, which legitimised these disorders for millions of Australians. His discoveries have attracted worldwide attention. Prof Talley is Pro Vice-Chancellor of Global Research at the University of Newcastle, a senior staff specialist in gastroenterology at the John Hunter Hospital and holds adjunct research appointments at the Karolinska Institute (Sweden), and Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota, USA). Professors Georgina Long and Richard Scolyer have received the GSK Award for Research Excellence for their exceptional contribution to medical research that has transformed melanoma treatment and patient care. Together, their discoveries range from defining new determinants of risk in primary melanoma, developing rapid diagnostic tests in cancer and identifying novel molecular phenotypes of melanoma, to leading the development of novel drug therapies that include targeted and immunotherapies. This body of work has been translated into guidelines for the management, diagnosis and pathological reporting of melanoma used in Australia and worldwide.
GSK AWARD FOR RESEARCH EXCELLENCE Professors Georgina Long & Richard Scolyer, The Melanoma Institute Australia DATA INNOVATION AWARD Dr Craig Dalton
Laureate Professor Nicholas Talley is a researcher, educator, clinician, academic leader and an international authority in the field of neurogastroenterology. In 2018 Nick was honoured with the Companion of the Order of Australia, and in 2017 he was named Australia’s most cited academic by Google Scholar. Specialising in unexplained disorders affecting nerves and muscles of the gut such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), functional dyspepsia, gastroesophageal reflux and gastroparesis, Prof Talley is credited with a number of seminal contributions that have enhanced our understanding of these diseases.
Professors Long and Scolyer are Co-Medical Directors of Melanoma Institute Australia, the world’s largest dedicated research and treatment centre for melanoma. They also co-lead an award-winning translational research group focused on clinical, pathological and molecular determinants of risk, disease progression and drug-treatment response in melanoma. Their contribution to medical research has been outstanding and they continue to lead efforts in Australia and globally to improve cancer patient outcomes. This includes the tripling of life expectancy for some advanced melanoma patients.
