COVER STORY

RA’s Recreational Activities andAmenities are R

Unmatched

eston Association’s vision is to “Live, Work, Play and Get Involved.” It’s more than a motto. In fact, it is part of our mission and deeply instilled in the values that formed the Reston community more than a half a century ago. The Recreation and Environmental Education Department at RA focuses on “Play” and “Get Involved.” Our team is the largest within the association, and there are good reasons for that.

Why is Recreation Important? Read what the following agencies have to say about that fundamental question. The National Recreation and Park Association believes parks and recreation is used to improve a person’s potential by providing

them with facilities, services, and programs that meet the emotional, social, and physical needs of a community. The National Institute of Health states “Like culture and art, recreation, leisure and sports activities play an important role in communities. Their many benefits include improving the health and well-being of individuals, contributing to the empowerment of individuals, and promoting the development of inclusive communities.” The Centers for Disease Control’s public health blog boasts physical activity can improve health. People who are physically active tend to live longer and have lower risk for heart disease,

stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression and some cancers. Physical activity can also help with weight control and may improve academic achievement in students. Kaiser Permanente surveyed more than 20,000 people participated in the survey-based study including the midAtlantic states. “What these study findings tell us is that even during an active pandemic or other public health crisis, people should be encouraged to be physically active to help maintain their physical and mental health,” said the study’s lead author Deborah Rohm Young, PhD, the director of the Division of Behavioral Research for the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Department of

Research & Evaluation. “Parks and other nature areas should remain open during public health emergencies to encourage outdoor physical activity.”

How Does Reston Help Foster a Good Bill of Health? Living in Reston is like living in a park. Over 1,350 acres of open space are maintained throughout the community, and a wide variety of facilities and programs offer year-round opportunities for fitness, fun and exploration. Fifty-five miles of paved pathways and natural surface trails connect our facilities, neighborhoods, schools, and shopping centers. These pathways are perfect for walkers, joggers and bicyclists. RA pedestrian walkways are maintained by our Central Services Facility team. More than 700 acres of

forest, 50 meadows, and four wetlands provide beautiful vistas and important habitat for local wildlife that make up a large part of the Reston tapestry. Aquatic habitats include four lakes, three ponds and 20 miles of streams, enjoyed by boaters and anglers looking for healthy and safe activities. There are 15 pools, 50 courts (including 24 lighted courts for tennis and four lighted courts for pickleball), three community buildings, a variety of soccer, baseball and softball fields in Reston. Some recreational areas include basketball courts or other amenities. And, of course, our community takes great pride in the 72-acre Walker Nature Center. Reston is a community founded on the preservation and appreciation of natural areas. To this day, a strong

environmental stewardship ethic is nurtured by residents, RA staff and volunteers. Reston has the rare distinction of being a Biophilic City. We encourage you to visit our website (www.reston.org) to take the biophilic pledge.

Compare the median number of recreational facilities that serve populations at the national and regional levels, and you will see that Reston Association numbers are very favorable. For example, communities with a population between 50,000-99,000 have about 15 miles of trails. Reston has a whopping 55 miles of trails and scenic pathways. Community gardens serve as another example of where Reston is ahead of the national average. Reston has five community gardens,

Reston was voted as Money Magazine’s No. 1 place in the nation to live if you work from home. For this ranking, the national publication looked at cities with populations above 25,000. They considered cost of living, quality of life, mental, physical, and economic health factors, diversity, amenities, education, the housing market, and crime. There were 1,720 contenders and Reston rated above them all. With a variety of services, programs and facilities, Reston is a great place to be. Inside this recreational guide, you will

VOLUNTEER RESTON JOIN VOLUNTEER RESTON Volunteer Reston (VR) housed under the Reston Association, is a network of community members who come together to complete various projects to improve our surroundings and bring the Reston community together. Our mission is to enhance Reston Association’s services and programs by matching the varied talents of individuals and groups of all ages, interests, and skills to a variety of engaging projects and endeavors.

Why Volunteer: Volunteers play a critical role in helping Reston grow. Whether you are hoping to meet new neighbors, spend time with friends, learn new skills, make a positive impact in your community, or complete school service hours, Volunteer Reston has something for everyone. Regardless of the motive, Reston Association volunteers all have one thing in common — they are all helping to make Reston a better place to Live, Work, Play and Get Involved. Reston Association volunteers have a variety of ages, skill levels, and personalities. Volunteers include senior citizens, corporate teams, faith-based groups, families, college students, retirees, scouts, and youth. VR has many different volunteer types, yearround, seasonal, students, environmental, corporate, groups, and special events. There are several ways to get involved. Some events happen frequently, whereas others happen on an annual or even one-time basis. Our recreational, environmental, and administrative projects enable volunteers to meet other

36

locals and learn more about Reston’s growing community.

Make a Positive Environmental Impact: Reston is often praised for its trails, lakes, and landscape. To preserve Reston’s natural beauty, regular maintenance is essential. Consider supporting habitat restoration, watershed cleanups, and other workday projects by signing up for an upcoming opportunity. Opportunities include Habitat Heroes, stream monitoring, watershed cleanups, Earth Day, Arbor Day, Walker Nature Center events, and other workdays.

Serve on RA Boards & Committees: The Reston Association’s Boards and Committees are where you can immerse yourself in a cause or area that suits you. The Board of Directors is comprised of nine members, and elections to the Board are held annually. All members — homeowners and tenants — are encouraged

RESTON ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES GUIDE

to participate in the annual elections. Watch the RA’s website each winter for Calls for Candidates and each spring for information about the annual election. Like the Elections Committee and the Covenants Committee, the Design Review Board (DRB) is mandated by Reston’s Deed. The DRB is responsible for reviewing exterior alterations and improvements of properties. Application to join the DRB can be found at www.reston.org. Advisory Committees are comprised of RA members who provide advice on Association matters and perform such duties as may be requested by the Board of Directors. Each advisory committee meets generally once per month and is comprised of up to 15 members, a Board member as a liaison, and at least one RA staff liaison. Members are appointed to advisory committees for three-year terms. Find out more about these

Boards and Committees and find applications to join at www.reston.org: Board of Directors Board Information Technology Committee Covenants Committee Design Review Board Elections Committee Environmental Advisory Committee Fiscal Committee Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee Multimodal Transportation Advisory Committee

Join the Community Events Volunteer Team: Reston Association frequently hosts community events throughout the year. These events allow Reston locals to meet, network, share stories and work together with camaraderie and stewardship. Community events include the Multicultural Festival, Halloween House & Trickor-Treat Trail, Summer events, Cookies with Santa, Community Yard Sale, Spring Festival, and many more.

Corporate Day of Service: VR Corporate Volunteer Program offers expertise in community service to corporations by creating customized, hands-on group volunteer projects that complement team building, leadership development, and philanthropy initiatives. Through this program, Reston Association staff will fully develop and coordinate all aspects of your company’s community service volunteer project.

Who We Are: Reston Association is one the largest community associations in the U.S. We serve over 60,000 residents in Reston. Even though we’re not a “town” per se, we provide services and programs similar to a town or city government. We own and maintain over 1,300 acres of parkland, 15 outdoor pools, 48 tennis courts, a 72-acre Nature Center, 55 miles of pathways, and four man-made lakes. Living in Reston is like living in a park. Corporate projects will go through the Friends of Reston, a 501(c)(3) organization established in 1999 to support the Reston Association in bringing valuable projects to the community. The Friends group allows the association to tap into other resources to bring great community projects to fruition on our land, at our facilities, and within our programs.

NEED SERVICE HOURS FOR SCHOOL? Many students in Reston and the surrounding area are required to perform a specific number of community service hours for their course or school requirements. Volunteer Reston is a great way to fulfill these hours. Students may be able to finish their service hours by handling shifts at community events, environmental projects, monthly service projects, and community cleanups. This also includes scouting organizations that need to complete a community service project. For upcoming volunteer opportunities or more information about Volunteer Reston, please contact Ha Brock, Volunteer Reston Manager, via email at ha@ reston.org or 703-435-7986.

VOLUNTEER RESTON HABITAT HEROES PROJECTS Our native trees, ferns, and wildflowers are under attack by invasive plants like English ivy, oriental bittersweet, and burning bush. We need heroes like you to join us in rescuing Reston’s beautiful parkland. These fast-growing, aggressive plants escape from people’s yards and threaten local ecosystems, taking away vital food and habitat from already stressed wildlife populations. You don’t need to be an expert to assist in protecting and restoring Reston’s woods.

Wiehle Overpass Natural Area (English Ivy) Saturday, March 26 10 a.m.-Noon Meet at the corner of North Shore & Wiehle Ave. All Ages are welcome. Children under 13 must work alongside an adult.

Moorings Drive Natural Area (English Ivy) Saturday, April 23 10 a.m.-Noon Meet at the corner of Moorings Drive & North Shore. Parking available at the Buddhist Tzi Chi Foundation — 1516 Moorings Drive, Reston All Ages are welcome. Children under 13 must work alongside an adult. RESTON ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES GUIDE

STREAM MONITORING PROGRAM RA welcomes new volunteers to assist with stream monitoring at several locations throughout Reston. Get involved with a small team during all seasons to collect data and identify insects to assess the health of Reston’s streams. Not only do you get to learn about Reston’s streams, it also provides an opportunity to make new friends. Our program utilizes the Virginia Save Our Streams (VA SOS) method of assessing the water quality in a stream. Based on the type and diversity of aquatic insects found in the stream, you will be able to assess the ecological conditions of the streams. This is known as biological monitoring and is recognized nationally as a reliable indicator of water quality. If interested, join our volunteer monitor email distribution list to receive notices on upcoming monitoring dates. Email brhoades@reston.org with the message “add me to the stream monitors list” to begin receiving emails. For those interested in trying out RA’s stream monitoring program for the first time, we will have an introduction to monitoring events along Colvin Run this spring. More information will be provided to interested volunteers.

RESTON’S ARBOR DAY Friday, April 1 9:30 a.m.-Noon All ages are invited – Children under 13 must be chaperoned by an adult Locations: TBD Reston is a Tree City USA Certified by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Join us as we help plant native trees,

plus a variety of shrubs, ferns, and wildflowers. Learn about Reston’s trees and shrubs, including proper planting and care. For more information or to volunteer contact Ha Brock at ha@reston.org or call 703-435-7986.

SALT WATCH Reston residents are welcome to volunteer as Salt Watch monitors through a Reston Association-Izaak Walton League of America partnership. “Road salt (sodium chloride) is everywhere during winter months. It keeps us safe on roads and sidewalks, but it can also pose a threat to fish and wildlife as well as human

health. Fish and bugs that live in freshwater streams can’t survive in extra salty water. And many of us (more than 118 million Americans) depend on local streams for drinking water. Water treatment plants are not equipped to filter out the extra salt, so it can end up in your tap water and even corrode your pipes. You can help collect valuable data to inform decision-making and advocacy regarding salt use by volunteering as Salt Watch monitors through a Reston Association-Izaak Walton League of America partnership. Email brhoades@reston.org with the subject line ‘Salt Watch Monitor Interest’ with the stream location. WWW.RESTON.ORG
