JOIN VOLUNTEER RESTON
Volunteer Reston (VR) housed under the Reston Association, is a network of community members who come together to complete various projects to improve our surroundings and bring the Reston community together.
Our mission is to enhance Reston Association’s services and programs by matching the varied talents of individuals and groups of all ages, interests, and skills to a variety of engaging projects and endeavors.
CORPORATE DAY OF SERVICE
VR Corporate Volunteer Program offers expertise in community service to corporations by creating customized, hands-on group volunteer projects that complement team building, leadership development, and philanthropy initiatives. Through this program, Reston Association staff will fully develop and coordinate all aspects of your company’s community service volunteer project.
NEED SERVICE HOURS FOR SCHOOL?
Many students in Reston and the surrounding area are required to perform a specific number of community service hours for their course or school requirements. Volunteer Reston is a great way to fulfill these hours. Students may be able to finish their service hours by handling shifts at community
events, environmental projects, monthly service projects and community cleanups.
Contact us to get involved by sharing your talents and skills with others; we can always use a helping hand at our community events, environmental projects and events at the Nature Center. We understand that people have different availabilities, so you can serve in an ongoing position or just serve at a onetime event.
ENVIRONMENTAL OPPORTUNITIES
Reston Association provides environmental education and stewardship opportunities to volunteers who want to help restore and enhance our community.
Potomac River Watershed Cleanup
Coordinated by the Alice Ferguson Foundation and Reston Association
Saturday, April 22, 2023 10 a.m.-Noon (rain or shine)
All ages are welcome. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
Join thousands of volunteers in a multi-state effort as we do our part in cleaning up the Potomac Watershed. Reston Association is hosting several sites along Snakeden Branch. Come learn about our watersheds and see what “interesting” artifacts end up in our streams. Gloves, trash bags and grabbers will be provided.
Reston Sites:
Snakeden Branch Upper - meet at Hunters Woods Village Center
Snakeden Branch Middlemeet at Soapstone Drive
Stream Monitoring Program Spring: March through May, various locations.
RA welcomes new volunteers to assist with stream monitoring at several locations throughout Reston. Get involved with a small team during all seasons to collect data and identify insects to assess the health of Reston’s streams or attend a one-time stream monitoring workshop to learn about the program. Not only do you get to learn about Reston’s streams, but it also provides an opportunity to make new friends. Our program utilizes the Virginia Save Our Streams (VA SOS) method of assessing the water quality in a stream. Based on the type and diversity of aquatic insects found in the stream, you will be able to assess the ecological
conditions of the streams. This is known as biological monitoring and is recognized nationally as a reliable indicator of water quality.
Upcoming Dates:
Friday, April 21 (Student Holiday), 9-11 a.m.
Saturday, April 22, 1-4 p.m.
Age Requirement: All ages are welcome. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
If interested, join our volunteer monitor email distribution list to receive notices of upcoming monitoring dates. Email cdickens@reston.org with the message “add me to the stream monitors list” to begin receiving emails.
Reston’s Arbor Day — Rain or Shine
Friday, April 14 (Student Holiday), 9:30 a.m.-Noon Location: TBD
All ages are welcomed –Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
Reston is a Tree City USA
Certified by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Join us as we help plant native trees, plus a variety of shrubs, ferns and wildflowers. Learn about Reston’s trees and shrubs, including proper planting and care.
Habitat Heroes Workdays
Our native trees, ferns and wildflowers are under attack by invasive plants like English ivy, oriental bittersweet and burning bush. We need heroes like you to join us in rescuing Reston’s beautiful parkland. These fastgrowing, aggressive plants escape from people’s yards and threaten local ecosystems, taking away vital food and habitat from already stressed wildlife populations.
You don’t need to be an expert to assist in protecting and restoring Reston’s woods.
Rescuing Native Trees
Saturday, March 25
10 a.m.-Noon
Corner of Wainwright Drive and North Shore Drive
Volunteers will conquer invasives. Once these invasive plants are removed native wildflowers, trees and shrubs will have a chance to thrive in our natural areas.
Salt Watch
Reston residents are welcome to volunteer as Salt Watch monitors through a Reston Association-Izaak Walton League of America partnership.
Road salt (sodium chloride) is everywhere during winter months. It keeps us safe on roads and sidewalks, but it can also pose a threat to fish and wildlife as well as human health. Fish and bugs that live in freshwater streams can’t survive in extra salty water.
You can help collect valuable data to inform decision-making and advocacy regarding salt use by volunteering as Salt Watch monitors through a Reston Association-Izaak Walton League of America partnership.
Email cdickens@reston.org with the subject line ‘Salt Watch Monitor Interest’ with the stream location.
For more information or to volunteer for any of the above opportunities contact Ha Brock, Volunteer Reston Manager at ha@reston.org or 703-435-7986.

Rolling Out the Red Carpet!
At Tall Oaks, our residents are the celebrities. And to welcome them to their new home in style, we are rolling out the red carpet – literally! Moving into a new home can be a big adjustment, so it’s important to make sure our new neighbors feel welcomed and loved from day one.
Resident Ambassadors Margaret Macedonia and Jim Fowler prepare to welcome the newest addition to the Tall Oaks family.
At left, Rodolfo O’Shea receives a warm greeting from Director of Activities Adina Cimpean. Below, Jean Hardison smiles on the red carpet on move-in day.
