As we navigate our new environment with the effects of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, our team recognizes that recreation can play a significant part in enhancing our physical and mental health.

MEMBER SERVICES Like other park and recreation agencies, we remain committed in keeping our members informed of the most up-to-date information and resources during these trying times. As state and local governments made the difficult decision to close schools and employment centers, the economic impacts are evident. Recognizing that we all are embracing social distancing, we are made more aware of the significant and positive role parks and trails can play in our community wellbeing, even if we are six feet apart. We are taking full advantage of local, state and national resources, including the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and the National Recreation and Park Association (nrpa.org) to aid us in making decisions to keep our parks safe while allowing the much-needed mental and physical health benefits of outdoor recreation for our members. Your Reston Recreation and Environmental Education Team is dedicated to continuing to deliver traditional recreational programs but also to offer you something new this year through the following activities: Programs, activities and events for all ages when safe to do so Pickleball courts and programs “Corporate Volunteer Days” with team-building opportunities to support our parks Planning actions to update the Lake Thoreau Pool Recreation Area Facilitating the Recreation Facilities Working Group This is your guide to “play” as you Live, Work, Play and Get Involved in Reston.

T

hese are extraordinary times. The COVID-19 pandemic has kept us homebound. To slow the spread of the virus we must practice social distancing by staying at least six feet apart from each other. More recently, the CDC has advised that all citizens wear a cloth mask when venturing out of their home, especially in situations where you can’t stay six feet away from others. However, medical experts also understand the need for fresh air, a change of scenery, and the ability for us get some needed exercise.

Getting out of your house is good for your mental health. So, how do we safely get our daily dose of fresh air?

To combat cabin fever, many residents have been hitting the pathways and nature trails. The good news is, with Reston Association’s 55+ miles of pathways, there is plenty of opportunity to get out and burn off that pent up energy or just get out of the house for a while, yet still practice social distancing. Plus, don’t forget about RA’s natural surface trails, especially around Walker Nature Center. Each trail is color coded. The Pink Trail is a loop trail in North Point. The Green Trail takes you from Lake Anne to Reston Town Center. The Red Trail is a loop trail around Lake Thoreau. The Blue Trail goes from Tall Oaks to Lake Anne, all the way to North Point. The fifth trail-Turquoise Trail-takes you from South Lakes Village Center to Hunter Woods. Some trails

run through more green space than others. It’s important that we all do our part to help slow down the spread of COVID-19. The chances of contracting or giving the virus to someone else is much higher indoors than outside. As experts have said, some folks don’t show signs of having the virus, yet can pass it on by sneezing or coughing. So, with that in mind, we should follow and respect the rules of social distancing on the trails. Here’s what medical experts recommend: 1. Walk or bike alone, or only with family members in your household 2. Keep at least six feet away from others. If you can’t pass someone safely on

the trails, move off the trail to maintain the six-foot distance until the other person passes 3. Choose a pathway or trail that is less crowded 4. Wear a cloth mask while on the trails 5. Walk on pathways at nonpeak times

leads? Visit www.reston.org to download a map of one of the pathways.

The pathways and trails are not just for exercise. It’s a place to reconnect with nature and have some space to just breathe. Wildlife is abundant this time of year. So, take the time to stop along the way to see what you find. There are a plethora of birds fluttering about, amphibians, and reptiles to spot along your journey. Not sure what pathway or trail to take, or where it

RESTON CAMPS

Reston Camps Families, It is because we care so deeply about the health and wellness of our entire camp community, that we had to cancel 2020 Reston Camps due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. We are saddened that we won’t be together as a camp family this summer. We will miss the camp games, the high fives, seeing friends from last summer and making new ones. As we move forward, our plan is to re-imagine an array of youth enrichment programs that can be executed late summer or early fall. Of course, this will depend on the status of COVID-19 in our community. Thank you for your support of Reston Camps. Please follow us on social media @RestonCamps information on current programs and activities. We look forward to seeing everyone as we return to camp in 2021! The Reston Camp Team

RESTON C A MP S IN A BOX We know cancelling camp means you are also missing out on camp traditions, such as camp shirts and activities. Please visit restonwebtrac.org for details of what Reston Camps– Camp In a Box looks like for your summer fun at home.

VOLUNTEER RESTON 2020 VOLUNTEER RESTON SERVICE AWARD WINNERS Each year in April, individuals and organizations across the United States celebrate National Volunteer Month to honor the important impact volunteers have in our communities, and to encourage even more people to start volunteering. During National Volunteer Month and all year round we shine a light on the people that inspire us to serve, recognizing and thanking volunteers who lend their time, talent and voice to make a difference in their communities. Volunteers are the core of our community. During 2019, Volunteer Reston engaged 1,400 individuals who contributed 6,900 hours of volunteer time providing in $189,750 value-added service to the community. Volunteering and community services are deeply rooted in Reston’s history thanks to our founder Robert E. Simon, Jr. and everyday volunteers demonstrate their passion for giving back. Our volunteers truly live the Reston Association motto of “live, work, play and get involved.” We know how important volunteerism is in our community and we would not be sustainable without volunteers. Reston Association has over a thousand dedicated volunteers, and each year we recognize a handful of those individuals at our annual Volunteer Reston Service Awards reception. In order to keep the community safe and healthy during this coronavirus pandemic we canceled the event planned for April 21. While we can’t celebrate face-to-face, we

30

are honored to recognize our winners and their outstanding contributions in our community through a Virtual Social Media Campaign. These awards are a fantastic opportunity for us to recognize and appreciate our unsung heroes. As we honor these six award winners, we also recognize and thank all RA volunteers that have given generously of their time and talents each year. Please join Reston Association in congratulating our 2019 Volunteer Reston Service Award recipients.

Volunteer of the Year Surekha Sridhar

Surekha Sridhar reached out to Reston Association in February of 2019 looking for meaningful ways to get involved in the Reston community. She has helped us provide continuous services at times where we have been short staffed. With Surekha’s administrative skills she was able to assist the Finance and Parks & Recreation departments with clerical duties. She archived years of documents and assisted camp staff with logistical support. She is reliable and eager to help where she is needed. In 2019 she has contributed nearly 200 hours to the Reston Association and the Reston community. In addition to her work with Finance and Parks & Recreation, Surekha volunteers at so many environmental events throughout the year it’s hard to keep track. This work includes planting native trees and shrubs at Arbor Day and Earth Day events, tabling at the Nature Center’s Spring Festival, inventorying wildlife at the RA Bird Counts, and picking up litter at the Potomac

RESTON ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES GUIDE

River Watershed Spring and Fall Cleanups. She supports several citizen science projects including monthly stream monitoring and weekly Caterpillars Count monitoring in spring and summer. She is an active member of the Environmental Advisory Committee, serving on the Litter Working Group and the Reston Annual State of the Environment Report (RASER) Working Group. She is clearly committed to a more sustainable and beautiful Reston. She freely shares her time and talent during the week, weekends and evenings. She has even recruited her husband to volunteer. Surekha is committed to the community and dedicated to improving the environment. She is a gem, and we cannot express how thankful we are to have her as a member of our volunteer team. She is consistent, diligent, and generous with her time and talent. A volunteer who is so flexible and capable of

performing such different tasks is rare. Surekha exemplifies the overall spirit of volunteerism. Please join Reston Association in congratulating Surekha Sridhar, RA’s Volunteer of the Year.

Youth Volunteer of the Year Kevin Alegre

Kevin, a sophomore at South Lakes High School has already established an impressive record as a volunteer. At the age of 15 his focus should be on college preparation, homework, and friends, yet he still makes time to give back to the community. Kevin takes time out of his social life on weekends and holidays to volunteer at our special events, festivals, environmental projects and the Walker Nature Center. Over the past year, Kevin has pushed himself to engage in new volunteer opportunities and ways to serve his community. He dug

in at Habitat Heroes helping staff remove invasive plants in our natural areas and participated in community cleanups. He works with young kids in the children’s activities area at the Multicultural Festival, Founder’s Day, Spring Festival and Cookies with Santa. His dad will tell you that volunteering has improved his social, leadership and communication skills. His personal development is evident in his service and he’s passionate about the work that he does. Kevin steps up where he is needed at our events and service projects. For example, at the Halloween House and Trick-or-Treat Trail he signed up for hands-on-crafts working with young children. At the last minute we had to pull him from crafts because we needed a volunteer to cover concession. He was happy to do so, even though he wasn’t comfortable working the popcorn machine, but he was willing to learn. He worked with staff and learned how to run the popcorn

machine and worked the crowd with a smile and a great attitude. Kevin also dedicates his time at Tall Oaks Assisted Living Center working with the elderly. Thank you for your commitment and energy, Kevin. Please join Reston Association in congratulating Kevin, RA’s Youth Volunteer of the Year.

run the EAC meetings, they also participate in various EAC working groups, including the Litter Working Group and the Lighting Working Group. When the Board asked the committee to focus on development and redevelopment projects in Reston, Sue and Irwin tracked projects, attended community meetings and made reports to the Board. Recently, they established a Development/ Redevelopment Working Group dedicated to this topic. Sue and Irwin also support the work of the Reston Annual State of the Environment Report (RASER) Working Group, making sure that its findings and recommendations are shared and acted upon. During their years on the committee, the EAC has done an outstanding job at making sure environmental impacts are considered as Reston grows and changes.

attends countless RA, Fairfax County and other community meetings and reports on the environmental aspects of the subject matter. He is a primary author of many of the EAC documents going to the Board. As they prepare to step down from their EAC work as committee rules require, Sue and Irwin have encouraged new members to join the committee. They kindly welcome guests at the monthly meetings and emboldened others to become EAC leaders. They are true champions of Reston’s environmental programs and natural resources. Please join Reston Association in congratulating Susan Beffel and Irwin Flashman, RA’s 55+ Volunteer of the Year.

In addition to committee work, on a yearly basis, Sue participates in the Potomac Watershed litter clean-ups and educates others about the importance of water quality and stream life at the Nature Center’s Spring Festival. Irwin

Sue Beffel and Irwin Flashman have served on the Reston Association’s Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) for nine years, rising to positions of leadership. Sue is the Chair of the committee and Irwin is the Vice-Chair. This committee advises the Board on the ecologically sound management of the Associations environmental resources, including its waters, natural areas and wildlife. Sue and Irwin are a great team. VOLUNTEER RESTON

Group Volunteer of the Year George Mason University Social Action and Integrative Learning (SAIL) — Leadership through Community Engagement Living Learning Community

On Reston’s Arbor Day, we try to improve habitat by removing invasive plants and installing native trees and shrubs in multiple natural areas throughout Reston. It takes a large volunteer workforce and having such a large, enthusiastic corps from an organization like Social Action and Integrative Learning (SAIL) GMU Leadership through Community Engagement Living Learning Community makes all the difference. As part of Mason’s Center for Community Engagement LLC the SAIL program, which stands for Social Action and Integrative Learning, has proven to be a well-organized, passionate and

32

reliable group. Despite rain and muddy site conditions, over 20 SAIL students literally dug in, worked hard and motivated others. A great connection was made, and both RA and SAIL looked forward to another opportunity to work together. That opportunity came in October when SAIL committed 35 students to volunteering at the Halloween House and Trickor-Treat Trail at the Walker Nature Center. To assure the group’s preparedness, the Nature Center Manager and the RA Volunteer Assistant were invited to speak on campus during one of the group’s class times. It was a wonderful opportunity to not only provide training for the upcoming event but also a chance to share more about Reston and the mission of the Nature Center. The advance preparation paid off on event night when the students

RESTON ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES GUIDE

performed a variety of tasks from check-ins at admissions to leading carnival style activities and playing the roles of costumed characters. The scale of this group’s support for the Halloween event is unparalleled by any other organization in its 22 year history. On a weekend when we need to assemble a cast and crew of approximately 100 people, their turnout was phenomenal and alleviated much of the pressure of volunteer recruitment and training. They brought a high degree of enthusiasm and a chartered bus full of volunteers to Reston! Not only did the students impress us with how they undertook their tasks, but the university staff that accompanied them led by example and stepped in to fill needs as they arose over the course of the event. Even people who were not assigned to play character roles came in costume to amp up the fun for volunteers and attendees. Sometimes large groups can be cumbersome to work with and the quality of work can greatly vary amongst individuals. It

was a real delight to experience quality and quantity with the volunteers of the GMU SAIL program, and the benefit to the Reston community was magnified as a result of their achievement. The GMU Leadership through Community Engagement LLC are a very dedicated group who view the opportunity to volunteer as a joy and privilege. They consistently go above and beyond their duties and our events would not be as successful without their tireless efforts and support. Please join Reston Association in congratulating Social Action and Integrative Learning (SAIL) GMU Leadership through Community Engagement LLC, RA’s Group Volunteer of the Year.

Community Partner of the Year The Bike Lane — Anne & Todd Mader

Anne and Todd Mader, owners of The Bike Lane, have provided invaluable bike

the rules and regulations associated with Reston’s Lakes. They met for almost a year and their hours of service resulted in recommendations to the RA Board of Directors. The motion to approve a working group came after three months of comments from RA members who expressed concerns about boating policies and other lake usage rules that are established in Reston’s deed and other governing documents.

support for the Reston Kids’ Triathlon, Reston Triathlon and the Reston Sprint Triathlon year after year. They have been one of the major supporters of the Reston Kids’ Triathlon since its inception 10 years ago. They inspect participants bikes and helmets at packet pick-up the Saturday before the race, doing tune-ups, tire pressure checks and the like. They are there on race day to do bike tune-ups to make sure the kids have a safe experience. They provided high-quality bikes and helmets at cost so that RA and the YMCA can provide this necessary gear and equipment to children who could not otherwise participate in the event. The Bike Lane is the only bike shop home-based in Reston. They take great pride in that and provide support to many Reston organizations (RA, YMCA, the many biking events, races they sponsor at Lake Fairfax Park etc.). It is with true community spirit that they

provide their services to serve Reston and they never turn down an opportunity to get involved and give back to the community. There are few small businesses in Reston that have this “we can help” attitude and the Bike Lane is one of them. Please join Reston Association in congratulating The Bike Lane, RA’s Community Partner of the Year.
