RESTON LAKE ACTIVITIES T

here is no doubt that summer will be all about being outside, and Reston lakes will not disappoint. Interest in boatrelated activities has increased substantially over the last year. It can be a fun and safe outdoor activity. Below is information on how you can enjoy this beautiful amenity right here in Reston. Reston has four manmade lakes — Lake Anne, Thoreau, Audubon and Newport — that provide a variety of opportunities. While swimming and ice skating are not permitted, fishing, boating, wildlife watching, programs and lakeside picnicking are available to Reston Association members and their guests. Here are some of the lake activities available this summer.

Lake Anne Summer Boat Rentals We invite you to take advantage of this great way to view Lake Anne from a different viewpoint. Bring your friends or family and enjoy the beauty of this Reston treasure. Enjoy a journey across Lake Anne in a paddleboat ($20), single or tandem kayak ($15). Rentals are purchased on site at Washington Plaza dock. For more information, please contact RAboatrentals@reston. org.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) Stand Up Paddle boarding (SUP) is the fastest growing water sport in America for several reasons. It is a lowimpact full-body workout that’s easy to learn, as well as a great outdoor activity that stimulates the mind and body. Classes are held at Lake Audubon and Lake Anne. By joining a class with a gentle learning curve, you will be able to advance your paddling technique and skills much faster than with most sports, all while having fun exploring some of Reston’s amazing lakes. Our instructional methodology offers a step-bystep approach to aid in your skill development. Register online at WebTrac.

Watercraft Camp Campers learn how to canoe, kayak and stand-up-paddle all in a week. This is the perfect camp for kids ages 11-15 who are looking to do something different during the summer. We focus on water safety, teamwork and responsibility, all while having fun with races, relay and scavenger hunts on the lakes. All safety equipment and boats provided.

Canoe & Kayak Rental Space RA offers secure fenced outdoor racks for canoe and kayak storage. Access available 24 hours, seven days a week. Contact CSF@reston.org for more information.

RESTON ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES GUIDE

Boat Permits Members interested in becoming a boat owner at one of our lakes can review the Boat Guide and contact RA staff at CSF@reston.org for assistance on size category and a permanent mooring permit application to register a new boat.

Fishing in Reston Reston’s four lakes are available for fishing. Many species of fish may be caught including largemouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, bluegill, sunfish and others. Here are a few simple reminders to help make your fishing experience pleasant: Public docks for fishing include the Lake Anne Village Center dock, the dock on Lake Newport dam, and the dock by the Lake Thoreau pool at Sunrise Valley Drive or at the dams on each lake. There are no public docks on Lake Audubon; however, there is a rocky fishing point that was built down the path from the Lake Audubon boat ramp parking lot.

Anglers 16 years and older must have a Virginia state fishing license. Much of the shoreline around each lake is private. Please respect the “No Trespassing” and “Private Property” areas indicated by signs. Anglers are requested to catch and release the Triploid Grass Carp. We stock these fish in our lakes to help with aquatic plant management. They are sterile and do not reproduce. Our lakes and streams eventually connect with the Potomac River, Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Thank you for your help by not littering.

Send us your pictures or share the fun on social media @ RestonAssociation.

AGING INFRASTRUCTURE R

eston Association boasts wonderful amenities for community enjoyment including pathways, pools, tennis courts, tot lots, multipurpose courts, pavilions, community buildings, ball fields, open spaces, lakes and a nature center. Reston is truly is a beautiful place, that is now approaching 60 years old. All community associations and parks and recreation departments are faced with aging infrastructure, and Reston is no different. Did you know that the newest facility in Reston is 27 years old? That’s right, North Hills Pool was the last new facility that was provided (free of charge) by the master developer. It was installed in 1994. A typical park and recreation agency has one park for every 2,277 residents served, with 9.9 acres of parkland per 1,000 residents. For a population of approximately 62,000 residents, see how Reston compares on a national level of residents per facility (see chart). A majority of RA facilities are over 30 years old, many coming up for major repair and replacement. This is a challenge that the current RA Board of Directors is facing. To help address the challenge, a Recreation Facility Working Group was created to help with how to evaluate facilities as they need major repair or renovation. The group developed a process to

determine if the facility should remain the same or may be a candidate for an upgrade or be replaced with an amenity the community has expressed a need or interest in. The next steps will be to evaluate the financial impacts over the next 5 to 10 years with the Fiscal Committee. About every 10 to 15 years, parks and recreation agencies develop or update their recreation master plan to address these issues. The last plan completed for RA was the Parks, Recreation and Open Space plan in 2005. Park and recreation agencies are as

diverse as the communities they serve. What may work in some localities, may not work for another. Therefore, agency professionals need specific data to identify the best practices to optimally serve their communities and residents. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee has been reinstated to review the data, metrics and research information that the working group and RA staff have accumulated concerning our major pool and tennis amenities. Concurrent with the PRAC work, the RA board will

review and obtain feedback on the data we currently have assembled, determine what additional data we still need to obtain, and discuss the best way to utilize and present this information as we begin to more actively engage in the 2022-2023 biennial budget development process. You can find more information about the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee by visiting our website https://www.reston. org/committees or calling 703-435-6530. Suggestions are always welcome. Only the best for you

because the best is all Kensington Senior Living knows how to do A decade ago, a passionate group of lifelong senior living professionals dreamed of creating senior living residences they’d choose for their own parents, who they love deeply. They wanted to contribute their knowledge and heart to improve the lives of older adults and their families. And that’s just what they’ve done in Virginia, Maryland, California and New York.

K

ensington Senior Living is a partnership of bighearted leaders who made a promise to love and care for your family as they do their own. With deep understanding of older adults and their families, they designed, developed and staffed beautiful residences that reect decades of expertise and unwavering commitment to uphold their promise. In fact, two moms, a dad and two mothers-in-law of the partners have lived in Kensington communities. From the outside, Kensington communities are inviting. Inside, they look and feel like a warm home,

but with specialized accommodations that make it easy for residents to safely move about. Throughout every day and night, best-in-class professionals deliver more comprehensive care than what other assisted living providers offer. For example, staff-to-resident ratios are excellent. Personalized small-group activities foster friendships and a sense of purpose. Three levels of memory care address the challenges unique to each phase of loss. Couples are welcome and can reside together in the same suite, even if their care needs differ. The best is here for you. Please give us a call to learn more.

* Our residents, shown above, were photographed pre-COVID, when masks and personal protective equipment (PPE) were not required.

DROP-IN TENNIS

Tue 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm Lake Newport Tennis Courts: 1,2,5,6 *Drop-in tennis is for Reston Association Members and tennis members only. Non-members must purchase an RA tennis membership to participate.

Players joining ladder should be able to play at 3.5 (NTRP) and above level. Challenge Ladder Rules • The initial ranking of players on a ladder is random. New players are added to the bottom of the ladder. The challenger must contact the player challenged. • The challenged player may select the time and location of the match; however, the time and location should be mutually agreeable to both players. The challenger is responsible for providing new tennis balls and reserving the court according to RA Tennis Court Rules. The standard rules of the USTA apply to ladder matches. The usual method of scoring is based on winning two of three sets with a tiebreak at the end of any set that reaches a score of six games each. In the tiebreak, the first to win seven points wins the set, but must win by at least two points. The winner of the match is responsible for recording the results online at tennisengine.com within 24 hours of the match. • The ladder listing is updated each time a new challenge match score has been entered. The rules will be interpreted and disputes between members will be settled at the sole discretion of the ladder coordinator. Upon completion of registering, you will receive a password to the online ladder. Please register online through WebTrac. For more information contact Rob Tucker at 703-435-6502.

How it works: You must have your RA pass with you to participate. Bring a can of balls and your game. Doubles will be the format when people are waiting to play. Teams will play best of five games using NOAD scoring. The winning team will stay on the same court but will split and no longer be partners. Losing team will slide to the next court down where a winning team will have split and will accept one player each. If the court next to you has not finished, you are asked to wait outside the court or on a bench. This format will continue until nobody is waiting to play. Once people are waiting to play, you are asked to go back to the five game NO-AD matches. Courts one and two should be used by players 3.5 and below when no line is present. Courts five and six should be used for 3.5 and above when no line is present. If court three has no lessons at 9 p.m., it will be reserved for drop-in tennis. Call the tennis office at 703-435-6502 for details.

Tennis Ratings Reston Association tennis professionals give ratings. Please call 703435- 6534 to arrange a convenient time. These are Reston ratings and apply for play in the Reston Team Tennis League. Adults Tennis Leagues 18 years and older.

RESTON ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES GUIDE

VOLUNTEER RESTON JOIN VOLUNTEER RESTON Volunteer Reston (VR), housed under the Reston Association, is a network of community members who come together to complete various projects to improve our surroundings and bring the Reston community together. Our mission is to enhance Reston Association’s services and programs by matching the varied talents of individuals and groups of all ages, interests, and skills to a variety of engaging projects and endeavors.

Why Volunteer: Volunteers play a critical role in helping Reston grow. Whether you are hoping to meet new neighbors, spend time with friends, learn new skills, make a positive impact in your community, or complete school service hours, Volunteer Reston has something for everyone. Regardless of the motive, Reston Association volunteers all have one thing in common – they are all helping to make Reston a better place to live, work, play, and Get Involved. Reston Association volunteers have a variety of ages, skill levels, and personalities. Volunteers include senior citizens, corporate teams, faith-based groups, families, college students, retirees, scouts, and youth. VR has many different volunteer types: yearround, seasonal, students, environmental, corporate, groups, and special events. There are several ways to get involved. Some events happen frequently, whereas others happen on an annual or even one-time basis. Our recreational, environmental, and administrative projects enable volunteers to meet other

locals and learn more about Reston’s growing community.

Make a Positive Environmental Impact: Reston is often praised for its trails, lakes, and landscape. To preserve Reston’s natural beauty, regular maintenance is essential. Consider supporting habitat restoration, watershed cleanups, and other workday projects by signing up for an upcoming opportunity. Opportunities include Habitat Heroes, stream monitoring, watershed cleanups, Earth Day, Arbor Day, Walker Nature Center events, and other workdays.

Serve on RA Boards & Committees : The Reston Association’s boards and committees are where you can really immerse yourself in a cause or area that suits you. The Board of Directors is comprised of nine members, and elections to the Board are held annually. All members – homeowners and tenants – are encouraged to participate in the annual elections. Watch the RA’s website each winter for Calls for Candidates and each spring for information about the annual election. Like the Elections Committee and the Covenants Committee, the Design Review Board (DRB) is mandated by Reston’s Deed. The DRB is responsible for reviewing exterior alterations and improvements of properties. Application to join the DRB can be found at www. reston.org. Advisory Committees are comprised of RA members who provide advice on Association matters and perform such duties as may be requested by the Board of Directors. Each advisory committee meets

generally once per month and is comprised of up to 15 members, a Board member as a liaison, and at least one RA staff liaison. Members are appointed to advisory committees for three-year terms. Find out more about these boards and committees and find applications to join at www.reston.org: Board of Directors Board Information Technology Committee Covenants Committee Design Review Board Elections Committee Environmental Advisory Committee Fiscal Committee Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee Multimodal Transportation Advisory Committee

Join the Community Events Volunteer Team: Reston Association frequently hosts community events throughout the year. These events allow Reston locals to meet, network, share stories, and work together with camaraderie and stewardship.

aspects of your company’s community service volunteer project.

NEED SERVICE HOURS FOR SCHOOL? Many students in Reston and the surrounding area are required to perform a specific number of community service hours for their course or school requirements. Volunteer Reston is a great way to fulfill these hours. Students may be able to finish their service hours by handling shifts at community events, environmental projects, monthly service projects, and community cleanups. This also includes scouting organizations that need to complete a community service project. For upcoming volunteer opportunities or more information about Volunteer Reston, please contact Ha Brock, Volunteer Reston Manager, via email ha@reston.org or 703-435-7986.

Community events include the Multicultural Festival, Halloween House & Trickor-Treat Trail, summer events, Cookies with Santa, Community Yard Sale, Spring Festival, and many more.

Corporate Day of Service: VR Corporate Volunteer Program offer expertise in community service to corporations by creating customized, hands-on group volunteer projects that complement team building, leadership development, and philanthropy initiatives. Through this program, Reston Association staff will fully develop and coordinate all
