VOLUNTEER RESTON JOIN VOLUNTEER RESTON Volunteer Reston (VR) housed under the Reston Association, is a network of community members who come together to complete various projects to improve our surroundings and bring the Reston community together. Our mission is to enhance Reston Association’s services and programs by matching the varied talents of individuals and groups of all ages, interests and skills to a variety of engaging projects and endeavors.
CORPORATE DAY OF SERVICE VR Corporate Volunteer Program offer expertise in community service to corporations by creating customized, hands-on group volunteer projects that complement team building, leadership development, and philanthropy initiatives. Through this program, Reston Association staff will fully develop and coordinate all aspects of your company’s community service volunteer project.
NEED SERVICE HOURS FOR SCHOOL? Many students in Reston and the surrounding area are required to perform a specific number of community service hours for their course or school requirements. Volunteer Reston is a great way to fulfill these hours. Students may be able to finish their service hours by handling shifts at community events, environmental projects, monthly service projects and community cleanups. This also includes scouting organizations that needs to complete a community service project.

nationally as a reliable indicator of water quality. If interested, join our volunteer monitor email distribution list to receive notices of upcoming monitoring dates. STORM DRAIN MARKING PROJECT What can you do to protect our local streams, lakes and the Chesapeake Bay?
STREAM MONITORING PROGRAM Water quality monitoring is the only way to find out if our streams are healthy and clean enough for both humans and wildlife to use safely. Monitoring data can identify pollution problems, see if pollution regulations are being followed, and gauge whether restoration efforts are successful RA welcomes new volunteers to assist with stream monitoring
at several locations throughout Reston. Get involved with a small team during all seasons to collect data and identify insects with the goal of assessing the health of Reston’s streams. Our program utilizes the Virginia Save Our Streams (VA SOS) method of assessing the water quality in a stream. Based on the type and diversity of aquatic insects found in the stream, you will be able to assess the ecological conditions of the streams. This is known as biological monitoring and is recognized
One way is to participate in the Storm Drain Marking Project. Our storm drains prevent flooding of roads and neighborhoods by carrying rain and snowmelt away from streets and sidewalks. Unlike water from our taps and tubs, water flowing into our storm drains is not treated. Storm drains connect directly to our streams and empty into our lakes. Trash, pet waste, motor oil, paint and other materials dumped or washed into storm drains pollute our watersheds and, ultimately, the Chesapeake Bay. Markers on each storm drain remind all of us to keep storm drains and our streams clean.
The Storm Drain Marking Project in Reston is sponsored by the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, the Northern VA Soil and Water Conservation District, the Virginia Department of TransportationNorthern VA District and Reston Association. To get your project started or for more information, contact Ben Rhoades, Watershed Specialist, at 703-435-6560, brhoades@reston.org
COMMUNITY EVENT OPPORTUNITIES Assist with the Parks & Recreation special events team with set-up, breakdown, event activities, and other roles as needed. Some of our special events include: Movies in the Park, Pickleball Tournament, Dog Paddle, Halloween events, Fall 5K and the Multicultural Festival. To volunteer or get a current list of our upcoming volunteer opportunities, email Ha Brock, Volunteer Reston Manager, at ha@reston. org or call 703-435-7986.
