Teams
What is a “Real Estate Team”? There are many different size teams, and all teams work differently. Some teams are very large, and in some the “Team Leader” doesn’t actually work directly with clients. The O’Gorman Team is a partnership between Boofie O’Gorman and her daughter, Margaret O’Gorman. Two professionals who work together with you through your entire transaction.
186
Real Estate companies participated in getting homes sold in the Reston market in 2019. The following are the most productive – the numbers represent the number of homes that each company sold in Reston in 2019:

As the chances of snow become minimal and the early spring sunshine encourages foliage to wake, so do spring activities in Reston. Our Reston Association team has worked during the past year to identify and plan a myriad of potential ways to “Program Our Parks.”
08
COVER STORY
MEMBER SERVICES According to the National Recreation and Park Association in 2019, nine in 10 Americans find their favorite outdoor recreation activities hosted by their local park and recreation agencies. This holds true for Reston. In a recent brand and market study for the association, it was pointed out that the two largest activity consumer groups in Reston are those who have lived here 30+ years and those new members we have welcomed over the last 1-5 years. Our traditional programs will continue to provide the majority of our community recreational activities. For 40-plus years we have offered various camp programs, hosted community swim teams and fitness events, offered swimming and tennis to residents, provided environmental education, encouraged volunteerism, conducted trails programs and more.

NATURE Tools that our team uses to provide activities are influenced by our examination of newer recreation trends across the country plus participant input that includes newer association members. Finally, the proposed activities are supported by the recently adopted 2020-2022 Strategic Plan.

Your Reston Recreation and Environmental Education team is excited to continue to deliver traditional recreational programs but also to offer you something new this year through the following activities: Pickleball courts and programs New and extended camp offerings highlighting RA facilities through Watercraft and Naturalist Camps at our lakes and Walker Nature Center “Tapping Our Trails” events (learn more in the feature article of this activities guide) “Opening Day” for our courts “Corporate Volunteer Days” with team-building opportunities to support our parks Planning actions to update the Lake Thoreau Pool Recreation Area Lake improvements to include a new rental fleet and collaborative on-water programs

RESTON ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES GUIDE
“TAPPING OUR TRAILS” COMMUNITY EVENT SERIES DEBUTS IN JUNE BY JESSICA BIGGER
T
his summer, Reston Association is rolling out a new community event series called “Tapping Our Trails.”Each event will include an evening filled with live music, games, food, drinks and activities that reintroduce you to RA’s wonderful natural areas and trails. Continued on page 6
WWW.RESTON.ORG
5
COVER STORY
The first “Tapping Our Trails” event will be on Saturday, June 13, from 5 to 9 p.m. Subsequent events will be on July 18, Aug. 15 and Sept. 19. These are kid- and dogfriendly events. Many of you have been a part of Reston for years, but there are some of you who have lived here for a short time and have just begun to discover what Reston has to offer. So, this is an opportunity for you to either connect or reconnect with RA’s parks, wildlife and paved pathways and then relax and have fun with friends, neighbors and family on a summer evening. You might also learn something about RA’s recreational opportunities you hadn’t experienced before. Each event will be hosted at a different location including Brown’s Chapel and the Walker Nature Center. There will be guided hikes with one of RA’s naturalists and self-guided hikes where you will be able to learn about the wildlife that inhabits Reston’s natural areas. You might even have a chance to spot a hawk or a
6
deer while exploring. Children will be able to participate in a nature scavenger hunt or an eye spy game along with other activities throughout the evening. This is also an opportunity to learn more about Reston’s 55-plus miles of pathways and where each pathway takes you. “In Reston, we are fortunate to have natural areas to enjoy, and we hope that more people will get outside and explore our parks, trails and programs,” said Laura Kowalski, Director of Recreation and Environmental Education. There will be scheduled trail walks on the pathways and around the lake, and the gathering space will be open the entire time with plenty of activities to keep you entertained, including a giant Jenga game, giant Connect Four and several other oversized lawn games. While you’re drinking a glass of the event signature beer created by Lake Anne Brew House, you can relax on one of RA’s hammocks. While there, stop by one of the many booths
RESTON ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES GUIDE
to learn about what else is happening in your community. With your admission fee you will get a signature beer glass. There will also be several food trucks, beer and a variety of nonalcoholic beverages offered.
“Lake Anne Brew House is excited to collaborate on the inaugural Reston Association ‘Tapping Our Trails’ series of events,” said Lake Anne Brew House owner Melissa Romano. “We’ve been brewing beer and building community in Reston since 2016, and are planning to brew and tap a special ale just for this event,” said Romano.
If you are a vendor or would like to sponsor this event, contact Laura Kowalski at lkowalski@reston.org or call 703-435-6530.

AQUATICS & SAFETY COUNTDOWN TO SUMMER Pool season is right around the corner and the Reston Aquatics team has been busy to prepare the pools for your enjoyment.
FACILITY INFO Lake Thoreau pool will be closed in 2020 as we begin a renovation. Morning and evening Fitness Hours have been accommodated at other south Reston facilities. For more information on the Lake Thoreau project please visit https://bit.ly/2r1hhQG or contact capitalprojects@ reston.org.
North Shore pool will be closed in 2020 due to substantial construction and upgrade projects. Facility hours have been accommodated at alternate locations.
SCHEDULE INFO The pool schedule is developed annually based on multiple factors including; facility condition (necessary repairs similar to the above), available workforce, historical usage data, and budget allotment. Our region, and the country as a whole, has been experiencing a growing lifeguard shortage for many years, and we are working to find new ways to recruit and retain lifeguards. Applications for all aquatics positions are open at https://careers.reston.org and all ages are encouraged to apply. Several pools will open in mid-June of 2020, when the public school year has ended, instead of the traditional Memorial Day weekend. This change in hours is safety oriented as we ensure that all open facilities are adequately covered to respond to customer needs. VOLUNTEER RESTON VOLUNTEER RESTON, RA VOLUNTEER PROGRAM Housed under the Reston Association, Volunteer Reston is a network of community members who comes together to help with various projects to improve our surroundings and bring the Reston community together. Volunteering is a great way to connect with your community, explore career options, and share your passion with others in Reston. Our job is to make it as easy as possible for you to find a great volunteer opportunity in Reston.
SPRING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Habitat Heroes Projects Our native trees, ferns and wildflowers are under attack by invasive plants like English ivy, Japanese honeysuckle and bamboo. These plants are fast growing and threaten the local habitat and wildlife. We need heroes like you to join us in preserving Reston’s ecosystem.
Purple Beech Tot Lot Saturday, March 28, 10 a.m.-Noon All Ages – Children under 13 must work alongside an adult Volunteers will work with RA environmental resource staff to remove English ivy and bush honeysuckle at Purple Beech tot lot. These fast growing, aggressive plants escape from people’s yards and threaten local ecosystems, taking away vital food and habitat from already stressed wildlife. Removal involves pulling the vines by hand and using weed wrenches, shovels and hand saws to remove the shrubs.
Moorings Drive – Park along Moorings Drive. Saturday, April 25, 10 a.m.- Noon All Ages are Welcome. Children under 13 must work alongside an adult Volunteers will work with RA environmental resource staff removing English ivy. English Ivy is easy to pull and volunteers will be able to see the results of their hard work once they’re done. Like other plants that are categorized as invasive, English ivy becomes a destructive force in nature. English ivy can and will destroy everything in its path.
