VOLUNTEER RESTON JOIN VOLUNTEER RESTON Volunteer Reston (VR) housed under the Reston Association, is a network of community members who come together to complete various projects to improve our surroundings and bring the Reston community together. Through this program, Reston Association staff will fully develop and coordinate all aspects of your company’s community service volunteer project.
NEED SERVICE HOURS FOR SCHOOL? Many students in Reston and the surrounding area are required to perform a specific number of community service hours for their course or school requirements. Students may be able to finish their service hours by handling shifts at community events, environmental projects, monthly service projects, and community cleanups. This also includes scouting organizations that need to complete a community service project. The following are upcoming

STREAM MONITORING PROGRAM Water quality monitoring is the only way to find out if our streams are healthy and clean enough for both humans and wildlife to use safely. Monitoring data can identify pollution problems, see if pollution regulations are being followed, and gauge whether restoration efforts are successful RA welcomes new volunteers to assist with stream monitoring at several locations throughout Reston. Get involved with a small team during all seasons to
collect data and identify insects to assess the health of Reston’s streams. Our program utilizes the Virginia Save Our Streams (VA SOS) method of assessing the water quality in a stream. Based on the type and diversity of aquatic insects found in the stream, you will be able to assess the ecological conditions of the streams. This is known as biological monitoring and is recognized nationally as a reliable indicator of water quality. If interested, join our volunteer monitor email distribution list to receive notices of upcoming monitoring dates. Email Ben Rhoades, Watershed Specialist, at brhoades@reston.org with

STORM DRAIN MARKING PROJECT What can you do to protect our local streams, lakes, and Chesapeake Bay? One way is to participate in the Storm Drain Marking Project. Our storm drains to prevent flooding of roads and neighborhoods by carrying rain and snowmelt away from streets and sidewalks. Unlike water from our taps and tubs, water flowing into our storm drains
is not treated. Storm drains connect directly to our streams and empty into our lakes. Trash, pet waste, motor oil, paint, and other materials dumped or washed into storm drains pollute our watersheds and, ultimately, the Chesapeake Bay. Markers on each storm drain remind all of us to keep storm drains and our streams clean. The Storm Drain Marking Project in Reston is sponsored by the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, the Northern VA Soil and Water Conservation District, the Virginia Department of Transportation-Northern VA District, and Reston Association. To get your project started or for more information, contact Ben Rhoades, Watershed Specialist, at 703-435-6560, brhoades@ reston.org
