RESTON ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES GUIDE

Greetings! Our Reston Association Team wishes you a happy new year as we spring into 2024! This is your guide to “play” as you Live, Work, Play and Get Involved in Reston. We hope you enjoy this issue, it is packed full of programs and events this winter, spring, and includes our muchanticipated summer camp schedule. There is something for everyone.

INSIDE 4

MEMBER SERVICES Reston boasts beautiful open space for all seasons, we invite you to bundle up and visit our parks and participate in the many programs we have to offer. Enroll your child in an activity or try out an environmental education, fitness or pickleball class for yourself. What’s more – recreation passes are now included in RA members’ annual assessment fees. That means no extra costs to you to take advantage of Reston’s wonderful amenities. There are so many different ways to take advantage of Reston Association’s exciting programs all year long. Visit the Walker Nature Center or come out for a Bird Walk event. Help us celebrate 50 years of Reston Camps this year by taking advantage of any of our varied camp offerings. Don’t forget – registration begins January 29! Spring tennis and pickleball classes will be here before you know it, and it’s a great time to learn a new activity or brush up on your skills. And that’s just the beginning. Many of you know that Reston Association recently completed a community survey to learn which programs and amenities you and your neighbors prioritize most. The results are now in, and we’re using those survey results to help us plan for the future. We want to be sure we’re putting planning and resources toward the things our membership values. And as we look forward to the new year, we wanted to share some of the recent projects that will benefit all of you as our members. The former Hunter’s Woods ballfield has been reimagined as a community park, complete with plenty of seating options and a Little Free Library. Renovations are nearly complete on Lake Thoreau and Shadowood Pools; we are putting the finishing touches on these facilities and are on track to have all 15 Reston neighborhood pools open and active for the 2024 season. And as mentioned, look for numerous exciting events as we come together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Reston Camps. Hiring for lifeguards and camp counselors is already underway, and it’s never too early to secure those summer job plans! Take some time to look through the guide at the many activities, programs and special events RA has in store. And of course, we are always looking for new opportunities to partner with our community, and we welcome your suggestions for new activities and are always looking for volunteers to help us ensure each one is a success. It’s a great opportunity to get to know your neighbors and impact the programming and events that make Reston such a unique place to live.

HAPPY CAMPERS & HAPPY PARENTS! My kids have been attending Reston Camps for about 10 years. We still think they are great. My daughter came home and said camp is like going to a party every day, so I think she’s enjoying herself! Thank you for everything you all do! Oh my gosh, my son is going to be over the moon!! His dream of going to Splashdown will be fulfilled!! He asks about it daily!! My son had a wonderful time at Aquatics Camp! Thanks for putting together such a great experience.

28

The boys are enjoying adventure camp immensely and the counselors are simply amazing! We are so sad that this is our last child going through the RA Camps. We had both our kids’ first day of camps after being out for summer travel - the process was very smooth and well organized, and the camp directors were great. Thank you! Thank you so much for everything and for such an amazing and fun schedule for Adventure Camp this year. You truly have outdone yourself.

ENVIRONMENTAL OPPORTUNITIES

Reston Association provides environmental education and stewardship opportunities to volunteers who want to help restore and enhance our community.

Habitat Heroes Work Days Our native trees, ferns and wildflowers are under attack by invasive plants like English ivy, oriental bittersweet and burning bush. We need heroes like you to join us in rescuing Reston’s beautiful parkland. These fast-growing, aggressive plants escape from people’s yards and threaten local ecosystems, taking away vital food and habitat from already stressed wildlife populations. You don’t need to be an expert to assist in protecting and restoring Reston’s woods. Our volunteering opportunities each month provide you with all the training you need to become an honorary Habitat Hero! We do a lot of invasive removal yearround. Join us! For all projects: Please wear long sleeves and long pants to protect against biting insects, thorns and poison ivy. There is poison ivy at almost all sites. Staff will provide preventative and cleansing poison ivy wipes. Bring gardening gloves if you have them. RA will provide some tools, gloves, snacks and water.

Get involved with a small team during all seasons to collect data and identify insects with the goal of assessing the health of Reston’s streams. Not only do you get to learn about Reston’s streams, it also provides an opportunity to make new friends. Our program utilizes the Virginia Save Our Streams (VA SOS) method of assessing the water quality in a stream. Based on the type and diversity of aquatic insects found in the stream, you will be able to assess the ecological conditions of the streams. This is known as biological monitoring and is recognized nationally as a reliable indicator of water quality. Age Requirement: All ages are welcome. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
