LETTER FROM LAURA KOWALSKI

Director of Recreation and Environmental Education, CPRP, AFO This time last year, we had closed many of our activities and facilities to the pandemic and were working with following federal, state and local regulations to develop safety protocols to reopen safely. With a year behind us and having successfully reopened pools, tennis, pickleball and basketball courts and programs, we are prepared to navigate continued restrictions and focus on a fun summer!

T

hat’s right, the popular tennis tournament is back this year. It began in 1966 inspired by the large and growing tennis community. The first tournament was organized by Harold Demoody, who named the tournament The Simon Cup after Reston’s founder Robert E. “Bob” Simon Jr. Simon was an avid tennis player, and the Simon Cup tournament was contested in Reston for 46 years until 2012. The tournament took a

break from 2013 to 2020. Past organizers of the cup have included Marilyn Smebakken and Mary Conaway. For 2021, Tennis Manager Rob Tucker will take the helm. Early on, The Simon Cup champions held onto their titles and the trophy for multiple years – Hayes McCarty, Phil Lilienthal, Ross Lomax, James (Skip) Spensley, Philip Nelson, Linda Rutledge and Doris Briggs to name just a few. At one time, the men’s singles tournament was filmed

by Comcast. Jim Elder, an avid tennis player and tennis professional instructor and Reston resident, and Rich Diehl were the commentators. The youngest player to win was Michael Shabaz at just 14 years old. He later went on to become the number one player for a season at the University of Virginia and played in the U.S. Open. Reston Association tennis staff members also participated in the tournaments while attending South Lakes High School. They included Ketsana Vongsavat, John Sullivan and Andy Vu. Another claim to fame was participation by El Motaz Sonbol of the Egyptian Davis Cup who later became the Secretary General of the Egyptian Olympic Committee.

RESTON ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES GUIDE

VOLUNTEER RESTON VOLUNTEER RESTON The mission of Volunteer Reston is to enhance Reston Association’s services and programs by matching the varied talents of individuals and groups of all ages, interests and skills with a variety of engaging and challenging projects and endeavors. We have been hard at work building practices to ensure that our volunteers events meet all public health recommendations and guidelines. We are excited to get back into the field with volunteers.

Guidelines:

Most of our projects will be outdoors. Our group sizes are limited to reflect current CDC guidelines. Practice physical distancing while on site. Hand sanitizer available on site. Tools sanitized after every event. Our Introduction and closing circles will be a lot shorter to minimize time we are gathered as a group. Our events are shorter, many sites do not have restroom facilities open yet.

Volunteer Expectations:

Please register in advance for any event you would like to attend so we can ensure our events do not exceed the max limit. If you have signed up for a project and no longer plan to attend, please communicate with your group leader and/or our Volunteer Reston staff (ha@reston.org) so that we can open the slot back up to other volunteers. Bring your own cloth mask and wear it during the event (we will have limited disposable masks to give a volunteer who does not have one). Bring your own work gloves (we will have gardening gloves that we can give a volunteer who does not have their own). Bring your own water bottle, we will not have any snacks or drinking water available. Do not expect restrooms to be open. Many sites have port-a-potties available, but only a limited number of restrooms are open.

RA is seeking volunteers to enhance the community in a variety of areas. There are many opportunities available in such areas as environment and ecology, the Walker Nature Center, recreational programs and facilities, special events, and many more. If you are interested in getting involved in the community, please contact Ha Brock, Volunteer Reston Manager, at ha@reston.org or 703-435-7986. We look forward to having you join our dedicated group of volunteers.

SPRING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Habitat Heroes: Our native trees, ferns and wildflowers are under attack by invasive plants like English ivy, Japanese honeysuckle and bamboo. These plants are fast growing and threaten the local habitat and wildlife. We need volunteers to join us in preserving Reston’s ecosystem.

Moorings Drive Park along Moorings Drive. Saturday, March 27, 2021 10 a.m. - Noon Meet in the parking lot of the Buddhist Tzi Chi Foundation – 1516 Moorings Drive, Reston All Ages are welcome. Children under 13 must work alongside an adult. Volunteers will work with RA environmental resource staff removing English ivy. English Ivy is easy to pull and volunteers will be able to see the results of their hard work once they’re done. The area the students will be working at is carpeted by English ivy. Like other plants that are categorized as invasive, English ivy becomes a destructive force in nature. English ivy can and will destroy everything in its path. It will smother other plants as it crawls over the ground and forms a dense cover.

Reston’s Arbor Day Monday, April 5 (rain or shine) 9:30 a.m. - Noon Location: TBD All ages are invited – Children under 13 must work alongside an adult Reston is a Tree City USA Certified by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Reston Sites: Snakeden Branch Upper – meet at Hunters Woods Village Center Snakeden Branch Middle – meet at Soapstone Drive (KinderCare) Bowman Town Drive – Meet at the Reston Library To volunteer or for more information on Volunteer Reston please contact Ha Brock, Volunteer Reston Manager, at ha@reston.org.
