STAND UP PADDLE BOARD Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) is the fastest growing water sport in America for several great reasons. It’s a low-impact full-body workout that’s easy to learn, as well as a great outdoor activity that stimulates the mind and body. With a gentle learning curve, you’ll be able to advance your paddling technique and skills much faster than with most sports, all while having fun exploring some of Reston Association’s amazing lakes. Our instructional methodology offers a approachstep-by-steptoaidinyour skill development. One of the best ways to learn is in our group SUP lessons, where you, friends, or family will receive personal instruction on land and the water. During our lessons, you’ll learn how to stand on your board, hold your paddle, and utilize different paddling techniques for propulsion and steering. Regardless of age, weight, or experience, everyone will begin to feel more comfortable and gain confidence by using their legs and core muscles to maintain stability on the water. Reston Tennis youth classes focus on practice, learn and play using the QuickStart format. Children will learn to play tennis by playing tennis. Reston Tennis implements the games-based approach to tennis, which means involving participants in tennis play within the first hour of the program. Many students in Reston and the surrounding area are required to perform a specific number of community service hours for their course or school requirements. Volunteer Reston is a great way to fulfill these hours. Students may be able to finish their service hours by handling shifts at community events, environmental projects, monthly service projects and community cleanups. Contact us to get involved by sharing your talents and skills with others; we can always use a helping hand at our community events, environmental projects and events at the Nature Center. We understand that people have different availabilities, so you can serve in an ongoing position or just serve at a onetime event.
Age Requirement: All ages are welcome. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. This annual cleanup of trash and litter in streams, rivers and beaches is part of the international Coastal Cleanup and is the largest event held by Clean Virginia Waterways. Tons of trash end up in the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay every year from our watersheds. Help keep Reston looking beautiful by joining RA for the Fall Stream Cleanup. Let’s do our part. It is amazing what a group of people can accomplish in a few hours. Participate in this statewide and international effort dedicated to cleaning the world’s waterway By simply clearing out litter from our watersheds, your contributions will have a significant impact on restoring Reston’s streams.
Water quality monitoring is the only way to find out if our streams are healthy and clean enough for both humans and wildlife to use safely. Monitoring data can identify pollution problems, see if pollution regulations are being followed, and gauge whether restoration efforts are successful RA welcomes new volunteers to assist with stream monitoring at several locations throughout Reston. Get involved with a small team during all seasons to collect data and identify insects to assess the health of Reston’s streams. Our program utilizes the Virginia Save Our Streams (VA SOS) method of assessing the water quality in a stream. Based on the type and diversity of aquatic insects found in the stream, you will be able to assess the ecological conditions of the streams. This is known as biological monitoring and is recognized nationally as a reliable indicator of water Ifquality.interested, join our volunteer monitor email distribution list to receive notices of upcoming monitoring dates. Friends of Reston 5K Sunday, Oct. 16 Browns Chapel Park Volunteer Hours: 7-10 a.m. Volunteer for the Friends of Reston Fall 5K Fundraiser.
Volunteer Positions: Course Marshals — The committed time is from 7:30-9 a.m. Must be able to attend orientation on Sat. Oct. 15 from 11 a.m.noon at the Lake House — volunteers are stationed along the 5K course and are responsible for ensuring runners and walkers are safe and are heading in the right direction during their time on the course.
Water Stop — Be on the other side of the cup. This position has you arriving 30 minutes or so before the race to set up the water station. Once the runners have come through the water stop, volunteers are responsible for picking up the dispensed cups, gathering trash and breaking down tables.
Assist with the Parks & Recreation special events team with set-up, break-down, event activities, and other roles as needed. Some of our special events include Movies in the Park, Pickleball Tournament, Dog Paddle, Halloween events, Friends of Reston Fall 5K and the Multicultural Festival. Below is what we have coming up this fall.
Friends of Reston (FOR) is a 501c3 organization that performs scientific, educational and charitable projects in support of the Reston Association. Some of FOR community projects include park improvements, camp and tennis scholarships, environmental education and natural areas restoration. All proceeds from this event support the Friends of Reston’s youth scholarships and enrichment fund. We’ll have music food and beer from Lake Anne Brewhouse. Mascot Escort — The committed time is from 7:30-9:30 a.m. We need volunteers to help the mascots get into costume and escort them around the event. Halloween House and Trick-or-Treat Trail The Walker Nature Center is looking for volunteers for its annual Halloween event, which is scheduled at the Nature Center 5-9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 29. This is not a horror show or a haunted house. Be part of a creative cast of characters. Dates/Times: Friday, Oct. 28 and Saturday, Oct. Volunteer29 Time: 5-9:30 p.m. Volunteer Orientation: Wed., Oct. 19, 6-7:30 p.m. Age Requirement: We are looking for committed volunteers who will positively represent the event and have a true desire to support the Nature Center. Adults and high school students are invited to volunteer. Volunteers must be 16 or older. 13-15 years old can volunteer with a parent at a game, crafts or refreshment stations.
