INSIDE 03 LETTER FROM LAURA KOWALSKI
Director of Recreation and Environmental Education, CPRP, AFO As we continue to navigate our new daily lives with the effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, recreation will continue to play a significant role for people in Reston by offering an opportunity for both physical and mental health. This issue focuses on Reston being “Together Again.” It may be different, but this community pulls together and moves ahead, and we are excited to see people enjoying our facilities and programs again.

EVENTS Our initial reopening of facilities and programs proved the significant and positive role Reston recreation areas, trails and programs are to Reston. Our team has carefully reimagined “play” in Reston. With students learning virtually this fall, much of the workforce telecommuting, and many adults contending with reduced work hours, our recreation areas have taken on a new importance. They continue to be freely available and to offer a welcome connection to nature and a break from the virtual world. An example of a high-quality natural environment to visit, learn and enjoy is our Walker Nature Center. I hope you enjoy the WNC article in this guide and learning about what the center has to offer all people. As we are “Together Again” your Reston Recreation and Environmental Education team is dedicated to continuing to deliver our traditional recreational programs reimagined and exciting new activities. We are closely following local, state and national requirements, including the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and the National Recreation and Park Association (nrpa.org) to aid us in bringing us “Together Again” safely. We hope you will join us in:

COVER STORY
Together Again BY KATIE SHAW, WALKER NATURE CENTER MANAGER
“
It’s so good to see you!” This is the phrase Reston Association staff have been hearing at our facilities ever since Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam launched the Virginia Forward Phase 3 re-opening guidance. And it is literally music to our ears. After months of COVID-19 restrictions that led to stayat-home orders, telework and closings, our community is cautiously coming together to conduct business, socialize and recreate — with our face masks, heightened sanitation, capacity limitations and physical distancing, of course. As useful as virtual activities, Microsoft Teams calls and Zoom meetings have been during this pandemic, there is a genuine experience that resonates with a different part of our humanity when looking into another person’s eyes, observing body language or hearing a voice unaltered by digital signals and audio speakers. As citizens of a designated Biophilic City, many Restonians have embraced the notion that our ancient brains are hardwired to be drawn to nature. In a similar way, it seems our sense of community is uniquely nourished by an actual coming together for shared experiences and dialogue. One day, we hope to be able to add back those handshakes, high fives and hugs that sealed the deal, lifted

spirits, and created even more bonds between colleagues, teammates, neighbors, and our extended family of patrons. Like a turtle poking its head out of its shell, we carefully explored our surroundings, planning each step that would lead us to a success. At RA’s Walker Nature Center, this meant starting out slowly, knowing that a rush does not always equal a win.
Fortunately, our mission is to connect people with the environment, so limiting our programs to outdoor activities was a natural fit. We have long endorsed the strategy that some things are best learned in small group settings. It’s always been a challenge for all to see or hear the special intimate moments in nature when a bird perches nearby or a skink scurries across a path. Our first in-person programs with 10 or fewer people meant so much to the participants and the staff. We gathered in the pavilion for a visit with a real Barred Owl, then prowled to the stream valley to look and listen for Reston’s resident owls hooting, “Who Cooks for You, Who Cooks for you all.” We paddled our way across Lake Anne to see where the water flows and

commune with the mallard ducks and each other at sunset. With a little fairy magic, we attempted our first special event, a re-imagined Fairy Festival. With just half the usual number of people, staggered arrivals and oneway foot traffic along our woodland walk, things sure felt different, but oh how it felt great. Using our imagination, we could believe that all the face coverings were just a part of the fairy costumes worn by children and adults alike. It was clear that smiles were beaming behind them as participants searched for flower fairies, read along the story trail, and voted for their favorite fairy houses, built as home projects to display. Our event was featured in an international virtual meeting of the Biophilic Cities Network in July, an inspiration to connect people in innovative ways during challenging times. As we look toward the fall and winter, it is clear that nothing will be business as

usual as in our pre-COVID days, but we encourage you to come out of your shells in safe ways that protect each other and celebrate the moments we can share. Our staff is busy reimagining how we can suit up for a fun Halloween experience and lift each other’s spirits for the winter holidays. Take a look at the variety of activities in this guide and pick something that you want to learn or something that would bring joy to your family. As one of our patrons recently exclaimed, “It’s just so nice to have something to look forward to.”

VOLUNTEER RESTON VOLUNTEER RESTON REOPENING PLAN At Reston Association, the well-being of our volunteers, staff, community partners and communities is our top priority. To help minimize the spread of COVID-19 we have had to make difficult changes to our volunteer program. Although many of our volunteer opportunities have been temporarily suspended or reduced, we are excited to begin slowly and safely welcoming volunteers back to our programs in small groups. We are closely following updates and recommendations from the CDC and local government. During Phase 3, our volunteer opportunities will be held outdoors with 25 volunteers or less. We will continue to expand the number of volunteer, and opportunities as we are able to do so safely. If you are ready to get involved, please review our updated volunteer guidelines below, complete our Volunteer Application and COVID-19 Waiver. We know that these guidelines are changing rapidly and we are prepared to adapt as needed. Based on the latest guidelines and the understanding that working outdoors has a low risk for disease transmission, this is our current plan for volunteer engagement: All volunteer opportunities are outdoors. Volunteers will be asked to sign an electronic COVID-19 waiver. Opportunities will be posted in VicNet, limited 25 volunteers or less. May expand if we are able to do so safely.
28
Volunteers will check-in at staggered times. Volunteer groups will be limited to be able to maintain a safe distance. We will always follow the most current and local guidelines for gathering sizes. Everyone should avoid close contact with fellow volunteers and should maintain 6 foot distancing. All volunteers and staff are required to properly wear face masks or coverings while working or volunteering with Volunteer Reston and in proximity with each other or the public. Please bring your own mask, water bottles and gloves. Staff will assign volunteers specific tasks and locations at job site to facilitate and maintain safe distances while working.
RESTON ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES GUIDE
All participants will be asked a set of health screen questions based on the latest CDC Guidance prior to participating in any activities. Our staff will continue increased sanitizing measures for all tools and supplies, including gloves. At this time, we are not providing water coolers or snacks, so please bring your own. Volunteer Reston will provide hand sanitizer accessible to all staff and volunteers.
To help protect everyone from the spread of COVID-19 or any other illness, we ask any volunteer who is not feeling well to stay home and not attend a VR project until any symptoms such as cough, runny nose, wheezing, elevated temperature or shortness of breath have completely subsided for at least 72 hours. Volunteers considered at higher risk should make their own decisions regarding whether to participate.
For more information on our volunteer program or reopening plan please contact Ha Brock, Volunteer Reston Manager at ha@reston.org.
