When you think of cancer, you may not think of it as a long-term condition. However 65% of cancer survivors say they’ve had to deal with long-term side effects during and after treatment. These long-term effects – such as persistent hair loss, depression, fatigue, nausea and loss of confidence – can impact their everyday lives, including at work. Each year, almost 120,000 people of working age are diagnosed with cancer in the UK, and with survival rates improving and people retiring later, this figure is set to rise. 85% of people in work when they were diagnosed with cancer say that continuing work is important to them. However, 47% of people had to give work up or change roles, highlighting the importance of ensuring that the right support and advice is available early on to prevent staff falling out of work. However despite the need for this support, line managers are often ill equipped to offer the right level of information to help manage employees affected by cancer. Organisations urgently need to develop a health and wellbeing at work strategy that recognises the needs of rising numbers of employees with long-term conditions. This is why Macmillan has developed Macmillan at Work, which offers workplace training, consultancy and resources to help HR and line managers support people affected by cancer.

a positive impact not only on wellbeing and helping to preserve livelihoods of those with long-term conditions, but also benefits organisations in retaining knowledgeable staff, as well as fostering a positive work culture and loyal workforce. The building blocks of a good health and wellbeing at work strategy include policy, training and support programmes that raise awareness and address the needs of employees, and ensuring that relevant staff (such as line managers and HR) are equipped to support colleagues affected by cancer.

To find out about the expert training, guidance and resources Macmillan provides, visit macmillan.org.uk/atwork You can also email the team at workandcancer@macmillan.org.uk or call 020 7840 4725.

Makeover plans announced for intu Merry Hill intu has announced plans for a multimillion-pound investment to transform the external facade at intu Merry Hill in the Midlands, as part of its latest redevelopment phase. intu Merry Hill, which attracts around 18 million visitors a year, will benefit from an investment of more than £ 10 million to transform the external entrance. Steven Fisher, Product Manager, IDS, says: “As a responsive distributor in decorative surfaces, we know the shop fitting industry is seeking value engineering solutions at a time when the high street is under strain. Elements3 offers designers and shopfitters the opportunity to install a luxurious design and experience for customers while also being highly cost efficient. The beauty of Elements3 is that

26

it achieves the performance of most 12mm products with the cost of a 3mm one.” With its malleability, Elements3 can be used for both horizontal and vertical applications and can be cut, shaped, moulded, thermoformed and seamlessly jointed, offering unlimited design possibilities. Damage and minor scratches are repairable to maintain the surfaces luxury looks and compared to other solid surfaces, the tempering process Elements3 undergoes enhances its durability, creating a long-lasting, low maintenance surface ideal for areas of high footfall and retail traffic. “Its versatility gives shopfitters a number of uses such as the creation of counter

tops, cash and wrap desks, displays and furniture with sheet sizes of up to 4100 x 1250mm available for added design flexibility, backed by a guarantee of 10 years.” says Fisher. The colour palette available within the Elements3 collection features 15 different design choices from a host of white and organic neutral shades including on-trend greys, reflecting desirable design trends already popular within the retail sector. The range offers a unique batch match guarantee ensuring colour consistency, which is especially important for national roll-out programmes. In addition, an existing 12mm solid surface product can be colour matched creating an identical 3mm version

STARBUCKS

Meatpacking District, New York City Opening date: December 2018 Store size: 2,136 sq m

New York welcomed the latest Starbucks Reserve Roastery in December, a 2,136 sq m immersive coffee destination in the city’s Meatpacking District at 61 9th Avenue, where the company’s rarest and freshest coffees will be roasted and served. The New York location marks Starbucks’ fourth Roastery and second location in the U.S. and celebrates the heritage of roasting and the craft of coffee. The sights and sounds of coffee’s journey from bean to cup are reflected at every turn in the thoughtfully designed environment. For the first time in the U.S, Starbucks has introduced the Arriviamo Bar, a cocktail bar in the Roastery featuring a curated menu of coffee and tea cocktails. ‘We designed the Roastery as the pinnacle experience around all-thingscoffee, and there is nothing else like it in the world. With premium coffees, teas, mixology and the iconic Milanese Princi Bakery, it serves as a Starbucks brand amplifier and a platform for future innovation,’ says Kevin Johnson, Starbucks CEO. ‘Beverages such as Draft Nitro, Cold Foam and the recent launch of Juniper Latte all began at the

Roastery and have since been introduced to Starbucks locations around the world. It is the ultimate Starbucks Experience and an unforgettable way to connect with our customers.’ Starbucks has a long history in New York. In 1994, Starbucks chairman emeritus, Howard Schultz, who was born and raised in Canarsie, Brooklyn, opened the first Starbucks store in the city on Broadway and 87th Street on the Upper West Side. Nearly 25 years later, there are 350 Starbucks stores across the five boroughs in the city where Starbucks employs approximately

5,000 partners (employees). The Roastery employs nearly 300 people, including roasters, baristas, commessas and mixologists. At its core, Starbucks Reserve Roastery New York is a working coffee roastery, where everyday Starbucks master roasters, who have trained for years in the craft of coffee roasting, will be small-batch roasting Starbucks rarest single-origin coffees and blends called Starbucks Reserve. Those coffees then get served fresh at the Roastery or shipped to select Starbucks stores around the world. That functional purpose, as well as the history of industry

and manufacturing in the Meatpacking District, is reflected in the design of the space. ‘New York is a hub to the world,’ says Liz Muller, chief design officer of Starbucks. ‘It’s an unbelievable place with such history. The Meatpacking District has a fantastic history of industry, and the neighborhood has an electric energy; it is alive. We’ve designed a space where the excitement and dynamic activity of the neighborhood is mirrored in the Roastery. We want our customers to come in and feel very inspired.’ There are two coffee bars at the Roastery, which in total offer seven brewing methods. Upon entering the Roastery, visitors can visit the coffee bar on the main

30

level, where baristas, called coffee masters, are crafting classic espresso beverages such as cappuccino, latte, cortado and specialty drinks such as whiskey barrelaged cold brew, sparkling citrus espresso, nitro hopped apricot cold brew and rotating specials like the cardamom latte. For the first time in the U.S, Starbucks will debut the Arriviamo Bar inspired by the Italian tradition of aperitivo. This craft cocktail bar is located inside the Roastery where expert mixologists will serve cocktails and spiritfrees curated by award-winning mixologist Julia Momose featuring coffee and tea. Specialty cocktails include the Nocino Notte, made with cold brew coffee, barrel-aged gin and black truffle salt, and the Triomphe, made with Teavana™/

MC Darjeeling de Triomphe Tea, gin, dry Riesling, aquavit, passionfruit sparkling water and orange saffron bitters. The Arriviamo Bar will also serve a selection of beer, wine and classic cocktails. The Roastery also features the Milanese boutique bakery Princi from founder Rocco Princi, with on-site baking of fresh breads, pizzas, cornetti, focaccias, desserts and more. The New York Roastery joins locations in Seattle, Shanghai and Milan with future openings coming to Tokyo and Chicago in 2019.

WATCHES OF SWITZERLAND SoHo, New York City

Luxury retailer Watches of Switzerland has unveiled a new flagship in New York City, located at 60 Greene Street, in the heart of the fashionable SoHo district. The Greene Street store is the first Watches of Switzerland showroom in New York City, and the second in its new USA portfolio, and has been designed by London-based design consultancy, CAPELO in collaboration with New York-based MNA. The brief for the design team was to create a showroom synonymous with the luxury of premium watch brands, which would also reflect the character of the SoHo District and the fabric of the historic 1880s cast-iron building. With a nine metre-wide street frontage, and more than 771 sq m of retail space over two floors, the boutique features a stylish palette of materials including exposed brickwork and polished plaster walls, oak floors, decorative tin tile ceilings, blackened steel architectural details and stainless steel fixtures. This creates an elegant yet inviting backdrop for the products on display, while remaining sympathetic to the local character of SoHo.

36

The store is home to an unparalleled collection of timepieces from longstanding Watches of Switzerland brand partners – Patek Philippe, Rolex, Omega, Cartier, Breitling, IWC, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Hublot, Ulysse Nardin, Girard-Perregaux, Tag Heuer, Tudor Bremont and Longines – along with a special offering of vintage timepieces, an inhouse cocktail bar, a curated library of collectible watch books and an evolving collection of photographic artwork. ‘Our Watches of Switzerland SoHo flagship is a special achievement for us

on many levels,’ says Brian Duffy, CEO of The Watches of Switzerland Group. ‘From our choice of location, to the design and architectural detailing in the store, to our exceptional products, partners and the talented team we’ve assembled – all come together to make this an experience unlike any other in the watch industry today. This is an important first step in what promises to be an exciting journey as we expand into the US market.’ Generous ceiling heights of more than six metres combine with original cast-iron columns, featuring decorative capitals, to

create a spacious, elegant first-floor retail space, home to three branded in-store boutiques for Rolex, Patek Philippe and Cartier. Blackened steel-frame glazed partitioning delineates the individual spaces, while maintaining visibility and cohesiveness across the floor. Shopin-shop units for Omega, Breitling, IWC Schaffhausen, Hublot and Jaeger-LeCoultre are positioned around the perimeter, while other leading watch brands are located within the multi-branded area surrounding the central staircase opening. Highlighted by a feature digital library and accessories wall, the elegant blackened steel and oak staircase encourages the customer to venture down the stairs to the lower-ground level. Contrasting with the first-floor retail space a cocktail bar, designed in partnership with Death & Co – one of New York City’s cocktail lounges – provides the focal point to the lower-ground floor, its oak and marble counter, with brass and woven leather details, adding sophistication and complementing the high-end customer experience. Lee Broom pendant lamps and a decorative tin tile ceiling adds to the

period feel. A social gathering space, the WOS bar will offer artisanal cocktails crafted exclusively for Watches of Switzerland clients by Death & Co. bartenders. For the more literary-minded shopper, an intimate library/bookshop, curated by Esquire Fashion Director and noted watch enthusiast, Nick Sullivan, includes a range of books from biographies to anthologies to luxe coffee table favourites. Recognising SoHo’s historic connection to art, Watches of Switzerland has also forged a partnership with non-profit arts foundation, Aperture, to curate a rotating exhibition of

contemporary photography. A dedicated service and repairs consultation area provides direct access to Watches of Switzerland’s team of expert watchmakers. This is complemented by the adjacent watch strap and accessories counter. ‘With all needs catered for, the customer’s visit will benefit from carefully considered, luxury store design and the exceptional level of customer experience for which Watches of Switzerland is renowned,’ says Lynda Murray director of

POP-UP POP-IN

From building deeper relationships with your customers to testing new markets, pop-up shops offer brands the opportunity to build an offline arm to their business

Pop-ups are a go-to marketing strategy for many retailers looking to drive brand awareness and a powerful expansion tool to test new markets. Whether it's open for one day or three months, a pop-up shop generates a sense of excitement for fans of a brand, immersing them into a different, exciting and memorable experience. 'Many consumers expect the pop-up shopping experience to deliver something unique and different to a standard bricks and mortar store, with many offering exclusive in store experiences that can’t be replicated online. Pop-ups can also host a series of exciting events from yoga classes and wellness talks with leading experts

46

in the field, to a breakfast bar with Rude Health, Pop-ups are also the ideal store format to cater for specialised shopping or seasonal products, for example, the Christmas Cracker pop-up that allows the brand to expand its reach to a greater audience during its key trading period. 'The financial pressure on high street fashion retailers always means that there will always be a place for cost effective solutions such as pop-ups. It would also make sense for savvy brands to utilise the large number of retail spaces becoming vacant. Demand from retailers for pop-ups is growing exponentially. In the past pop-ups have been generally associated

with short durations such as one to two weeks. However, our fastest growing customer segment is medium to large size retailers/brands using pop-ups for durations of six - 18 months. They are using them as a powerful expansion tool to test new markets. It's these experiences that keep a brand fresh, exciting and engaging for customers, and the perfect way for a retailer to test out new store formats and locations.
