Con esta nueva edición, cumplimos 15 años de estar presentes junto a los floricultores ecuatorianos, impulsando la venta de flores al mundo. Hemos recorrido este camino junto a ustedes, hemos aprendido mucho y hemos compartido momentos difíciles pero también muchas satisfacciones.
With this new edition, we celebrate 15 years of being present with the Ecuadorian flower growers, promoting the sale of flowers to the world. We have walked this road together with you, we have learned a lot and we have shared difficult moments but also many satisfactions.
En estos años, también hemos perdido a algunos queridos amigos que nos ayudaron en el camino y dejaron un legado de innovación y trabajo, como Peter Hannaford, Peter Ullrich, Giorgio Ghione, Roberto Nevado, Hernán Torres, y algunos más que nos compartieron sus experiencias en la floricultura; un recuerdo fraterno para todos ellos.
In these years, we have also lost some dear friends who helped us along the way and left a legacy of innovation and work, such as Peter Hannaford, Peter Ullrich, Giorgio Ghione, Roberto Nevado, Hernán Torres, and some others who shared their experiences in flower growing with us. We will always cherish all of them deeply.
Ecuador y sus Flores estuvo presente en Expo Flor Ecuador 2018, donde el ingenio, la creatividad y el excelente gusto de los expositores, unido a la impecable organización dejaron muy en alto el nombre de nuestro país. AGRIFLOR 2018 dejó también un balance muy positivo. Una buena feria en donde los expositores más pequeños recibieron la visita de muchos clientes y tuvieron la oportunidad de abrirse a nuevos mercados.
Ecuador and its Flowers was present at Expo Flor Ecuador 2018, where the ingenuity, creativity and excellent taste of the exhibitors, together with the impeccable organization, greatly heightened the name of our country. AGRIFLOR 2018 also left a very positive balance; a good fair, where the smallest exhibitors were visited by many customers, and had the opportunity to open up to new markets.
Parecería que el sector floricultor está pasando por un momento magnífico, sin embargo no es la realidad. Si bien nuestros amigos han hecho un enorme esfuerzo por presentarse magníficamente en Expo Flor Ecuador, la realidad del país es muy crítica. Que no se engañe la opinión pública, todavía es muy difícil ser competitivos teniendo en cuenta los altos costos de producción.
It would seem that the flower growing sector is going through a magnificent moment, however that is not the reality. Even though our friends have made an enormous effort to present themselves magnificently at the Expo Flor Ecuador, the reality of the country is quite critical. May public opinion be not deceived; it is still very difficult to be competitive taking into account the high production costs.
Un año en donde se han consolidado algunas empresas y han cambiado de manos algunas fincas. Un año de mucho trabajo y mucho esfuerzo que dan señales de que hay como vender nuestras flores en el mundo. Pero no debemos cometer el error de concentrar todos los esfuerzos en los mismos mercados; eso hace que haya más presión sobre los precios empujándolos a la baja.
A year where some companies have been consolidated and some flower growing farms have changed hands. A year of hard work and a lot of effort that gives signs that there our flowers can be sold in the world. But we must not make the mistake of concentrating all our efforts upon the same markets; that causes more pressure on prices pushing them downward.
Al haber una gran oferta de flor en el mundo, debemos esforzarnos por llegar, diferenciadamente, a esos nichos de mercado donde aprecian la calidad de nuestra flor y donde la flor colombiana y africana no son competencia.
Having a great supply of flowers in the world, we must strive to reach those market niches differently, where they appreciate the quality of our flower and where the Colombian and African flowers are not competition.
Seamos, como algunos floricultores, más audaces para llegar a nuevos mercados. Trabajemos en conjunto con las cargueras para buscar mejores rutas y así la logística no sea una traba para que la flor ecuatoriana viaje a nuevos destinos.
Let us be bolder with the aim of reaching new markets, like some flower growers are. Let us work together with the freight businesses in order to look for better routes and thus logistics will no longer be a hindrance for the Ecuadorian flower so it can travel to new destinations.

CIOPORA
The CIOPORA Academy is an ongoing, specialized training and certificate program for individuals seeking to expand their knowledge of Intellectual Property (IP) in the field of horticulture. The CIOPORA Academy events are held at different locations around the world and vary between one-day workshops to three-day seminars tailored to the needs of the green sector. Each event tackles topics surrounding IP for plant innovations and is led by world’s leading IP experts. With six workshops and over 100 learners from 17 countries so far, the CIOPORA Academy aspires to be a global reference program on IP for the green business. On September 5/6, 2018 a training workshop on IP for plant products was held at Washington DC and José Javier Sáenz from Ecuador y Sus Flores was there to talk to Dr Edgar Krieger, CIOPORA Secretary General, and Steven Hutton, CIOPORA President. What is CIOPORA and how its work contributes to flower producers and the different markets around the world? CIOPORA’s main goal is to provide for effective protection for innovation in plants. Innovation results in something that has never existed before or never existed in of the certain quality. So, the whole idea of innovation is to create something new for the society. Intellectual property (IP) protection is a system designed to a reward innovator for the benefits created. It is a kind of monopoly granted to inventor by governments around the world for a limited period. By definition, this innovation, this new invention takes nothing from the society but brings something new; As a result, society first benefits from the improved qualities of the product allowing an inventor to acquire a sufficient return on his investment and then, at the end of the protection period, the society benefits from the public access to the product. Improvement of plants is the main motivation for breeding activity. At CIOPORA, as a community where breeders of ornamental and fruit plants come together, we are looking for protection, good, reasonable, honest, strong, and enforceable protection around the world for our innovations. Such protection would enable us to continue creating new plant varieties and bring our novelties to growers and the market. IP carries benefits for every link in the plant production chain. Innovator gets a reward for her innovation. The grower says “OK, I’ll take this new plant because it has less disease, it has more productivity, it has a longer vase life, it can be shipped across the world”. Hence, growers recognizing the value should understand that innovation, that sometimes takes

years to develop, has its price. There are still free varieties and a grower can always opt for them, but they don’t have the improved traits that make growers truly competitive. You only pay a premium if it is worth it. It is the CIOPORA’s message to the industry is that we as innovators need to make sure that we have reasonable protection for our varieties. For us it is not asking for too much as our products can ensure prosperity of the entire production chain. All we want is reasonable protection and compensation. This is what we do at CIOPORA: we work with governments for creation and improvement of IP laws to protect plant innovations, and then we educate our members and the industry about IP, Plant Breeders’ Rights (PBR), Plant Patents, Trademarks for plant products and related matters. In terms of looking for a reasonable law or promoting laws that can protect the business, how do you see the Latin American and Ecuadorian market in terms of how strong those laws are and how well designed they are and how do you see the relationship with governments in these past years. How open the governments in Ecuador and in Latin America have been to promote these laws that at the end of the day are meant to encourage innovation in a way and bring all those benefits to society. Laws in Ecuador has been changing following political shifts. We are still concerned with Ecuador since the level of protection provided by its laws to plant innovations could be improved to match the international standard. With introduction of Codigo Ingenios two years ago, the level of IP protection for plants decreased, raising major concerns among breeders. The quality of Ecuadorian roses

is excellent, and many flowers produced in the country are niche products with high premiums. Growers across the country depend on a continual flow of new improved varieties. A good, enforceable law could serve as an incentive for plant breeders, whose elaborate R&D activity may take years. CIOPORA breeders very much like to continue doing business in Ecuador and we do feel optimistic: the recent changes on Ecuador’s political arena are rather promising for our sector.

we were content with situation but then the Plant Variety Protection (PVR) fees were raised dramatically, basically making the Plant Breeders’ Right title worth more than the total of royalties that can be collected for the entire period of protection. CIOPORA became invested in changing these conditions and, with help of our Ecuadorian partners, it was indeed achieved. Still, the case with PVR fees can serve as an example of how actions undertaken by a government could harm a well-established and profitable industry. Businesses depend on government ability and responsibility to ensure and safeguard their competitiveness of its businesses. I want to go a Little deeper into the CIOPORA Academy and how it works and what things you have to offer for Ecuadorian farmer, growers and breeders they might be interested in.

And concerning local associates from CIOPORA in Ecuador, how many resources can CIOPORA offer them to be part of that negotiation with the government or how you’ve been working with Expoflores, for example. We have a close institutional relationship with Expoflores, who is CIOPORA’s supporter. In turn, CIOPORA is an affiliate member of Expoflores. We also maintain a great relationship with Mr Alejandro Martinez, who on several occasions visited CIOPORA events. One of our board members is based in Ecuador, and he is supporting us tremendously in our lobby work on the ground. We also foster relations with Ecuadorian Embassies to the US and the EU. In few days our legal counsel Micaela Filippo will visit Expo Flor Ecuador 2018, and will have meetings with growers , with local breeders and people from SENADI, the Ecuadorian IP Office. One could say that CIOPORA is very invested and highly engaged in Ecuador and dedicates many of its resources to this important horticultural hub. We have great hope for a productive cooperation with the new Ecuadorian Government. Do you think Ecuador has conditions to become probably a better or more competitive player if those laws would be modified or it had better regulations, the terms? Yes, definitively. Ecuador seems to have it all: the climate, the hard-working and knowledgeable human resources, the horticultural expertise, and the infrastructure. What we feel is still missing is a strong PBR law. Breeders in Ecuador have recently seen some turbulent times. For some time,

We launched the CIOPORA Academy almost four years ago after our members expressed a wish for more education on IP for plants from CIOPORA. Before launching the program, we went through a strategic analysis of our organization discovering that education should have a more prominent role among CIOPORA’s functions. We started in 2015 with the first CIOPORA Academy in Venlo, the Netherlands, and today’s Workshop in Washington D.C. is the seventh in the series. Now, the program is designed mainly for breeders, but our hope is that in the future we can expand it to include growers, propagators, and trade. In our daily work at CIOPORA, we recognize a great need throughout the industry for more in-depth knowledge on IP for plants. We have an excellent global network of IP experts, which we tap into who while searching for qualified speakers for the CIOPORA Academy workshops. This expertise and knowledge is what we are offering the green sector. In the next couple of years, we’ll be able to offer custom workshops for growers and trade. As one of the most important producers of flowers in the world, Ecuador is one of the main targets for the program expansion. The CIOPORA Academy offers a wide variety of modules on Plant Variety Protection and its various regimes around the globe. It teaches participants how to avoid legal pitfalls, how to draft licensing contracts, and even goes beyond the scope of IP for plants and provides lectures on tax law, competition law and other legal matters important for a successful business. We are not educating our learners to become lawyers, but we are enabling them to become better strategists, to assume more control over their intellectual and monetary assets and to use them wisely. The same is true for growers, who we believe should understand the legal framework they participate and be aware of their rights. To comply with law, one has to understand what is required. And we see that the level of such knowledge on Intellectual Property for plants needs to be further developed with the CIOPORA Academy playing a crucial role as CIOPORA has the infrastructure and the expertise to fill this educational gap.

Do you work with local partners in terms of educational institutions, universities, or something like that? No, at least not on the institutional level; we are looking to explore such opportunities though. The idea would be to do it for example in cooperation with our local partners, e.g. with Expoflores. We have already had conversations with Expoflores about it. However, once we are ready to launch programs for growers and trade, then Expoflores will be one of our go-to partners. We know that Expoflores supports fair business practices and is committed to raising awareness towards IP protection for plants among its members. Anything to add probably from your experience, since before you became the President, you were a member of CIOPORA. How was your experience with the services that CIOPORA offers regarding the services that CIOPORA Academy gives specifically? I believe that what makes the CIOPORA Academy special is that it is international as every workshop takes place in a new location in the world. Further on, and we make the best of the program by offering networking and one-in-a-kind side events. For instance, during our Washington, D.C. workshop, we took our participants (and not only members) on a tour to the US Patent & Trademark Office. We try to bring our learners into direct contact and exchange with experts and, sometimes, authorities, as in the end they are the main users of the PVR system that authorities overlook. Our program is flexible, so to whichever location we move next we ask ourselves what are the issues here?, who is our audience?, and we tailor our program by answering these questions. We focus on the laws and issues of the territory we are in. So that is why I think you can say: “Ok, you know the next one is before Fruit Attraction in Madrid, so it will evolve around topics and territories important to fruit breeders. As a participant, you can either stay home and wait for a workshop in your region or travel the world with the CIOPORA Academy. Mentioning travel, we would be also thrilled to hold one of the future CIOPORA Academy workshop in China. So I want to ask you if a farmer in Ecuador, for example, is interested in getting more involved, or at least getting to know a little bit more about CIOPORA, and learning more about the regulations of a particular market. Are there any online resources that CIOPORA Academy offers? Currently, the CIOPORA Academy does not offer any content online but we are currently working on closing this gap by launching an additional webinar program to enable more participation from overseas. Another way to gain easier access to the CIOPORA Academy is to become a member or a supporter of CIOPORA as these two groups enjoy major discounts off the normal rates. For instance, flower growers can easily join us as supporters and enjoy the discount..

We want to know a little bit more how your work is related to international organizations of intellectual property such as UPOV (International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants) or The World Trade Organization or The World Intellectual Property Organization. How is your work with them or how do you relate? Since its foundation, CIOPORA has maintained very close relationships with UPOV and has an observer status; In fact, CIOPORA is as old as UPOV and this is not a coincidence. Prior to Paris diplomatic conference, where UPOV was founded, a group of rose breeders formed CIOPORA to participate in the conference as an interest group. Currently, CIOPORA has access to all UPOV bodies open for observers. This position enables us to directly advocate for the breeders’ interests with UPOV.As one of the most active observers, CIOPORA permanently provides input and recommendations, for instance as to the scope of right or technical protocols, etc. We are working directly with UPOV, as it is a body of WIPO and it is specialized in our issues. Our involvement with WTO is limited to lobby for the IP protection principles embodied in the TRIPS Agreement. CIOPORA has another special trait: unlike many international organizations, we do international work on the level of UPOV and WTO, but also work closely with national governments as, despite harmonization efforts, IP for plants is still mainly regulated by the national laws. Most countries do not have national counterparts to CIOPORA, so there is no one to do our work on the national level. Fellow industry organizations such as Expoflores, Asocoflores, Union Fleurs, AIPH, to name just a few, are important partners for us to achieve progress in our work. Analyzing the political world trade situation, what are the main difficulties that you think right now and in the coming years are going to happen in terms of intellectual property and for the flower market, since the US is a very important market for Ecuadorian flowers and all these trade wars traps that are present. What is your perspective for the next years? I believe that, in terms of international trade in our area, problems tend to appear where there is no clarity, and right now in the world of IP protection in ornamentals and fruits, and cut flowers specifically, there is no clarity whatsoever Take the problem with definitions of the harvest material and propagating material and you will have something that continuously causes problems in the global trade flows. So, what is confusing about these two notions? Under the UPOV system, every country provides their own definition for these terms and the results are not uniform. So, is it a cut flower that is shipped from Ecuador to the United States, or is it propagating material? I would say it is propagating material because, with enough of growing know-how, you can take a stem, make five new cuttings out of it, and you get five new plants. According to some national laws, cut flower can only qualify as harvested material as it is not intended for propagation, hence it does not enjoy the protection provided to propagating material. This presents a

big problem for asexually reproduced crops as they can be easily propagated from parts of a plant. So when there`s no clarity and no agreement. And when an issue that important and fundamental to the entire system, is an open issue, it is quite problematic. In this respect, the lack of harmonization hinders trade and fair business practices in our highly globalized economy. CIOPORA would like to support international trade based on the rules of fair play. We should avoid having unfair competition between countries since often countries with high standards of IP protection become somehow disadvantaged as their industries have to observe the laws and cannot deliver produce at the lowest price mark. The very idea of WTO, the World Trade Organization and the Trade Agreement Laws, was that industrialized countries open their markets to products from developing countries, and in return, the developing countries would respect IP. But what we see in some cases is that the markets are open, but the conditions have not been fully met yet and the IP protection is not as adequate as it should be. Now the US administration started to ask for more respect for IP which is only fair. And are all the players involved in the same conditions to play in an even field? At the moment, the top standard in IP protection for plants is the 1991 Act of UPOV, so we at CIOPORA are working to encourage all countries to accede to this standard or at least put a law in place which is equal to it as it has been done in Colombia. Both growers and breeders in Colombia benefited from this development. Regarding innovation, and in terms of developing new technology , let`s say that Ecuador in a couple of years or a couple of months has better laws for protecting intellectual property. How much do you think that the Ecuadorian market and the Ecuadorian flower industry could benefit for more breeders coming to Ecuador and investing there in developing new varieties? If the law is effective and enforceable, we are positive that the breeders will feel encouraged. Of course, regulating trade and economy goes far beyond one law and multiple factors play a prominent role. It is hard to make predictions about such developments: you have exchange rates, markets developing and crashing, trade regulations, phytosanitary issues, to name just a few. But we are confident that IP is a big piece in a puzzle. The bottom line is that a great product quality comes from both the results of innovative breeding activity and growers’ know-how. Innovation is the primary source of economic growth in all sectors and this rule also applies to flower business. Innovation, however, costs money, and the only income a breeder can have is derived from the royalty payments which often do not go beyond one to three percent of the average growers’ income. Economic growth is a cycle: when all actors of the value chain want to achieve it, they must provide for suitability of each other’s businesses. Thank you very much for your time.

Dümmen Orange ganó múltiples premios en la Conferencia SAF 2018
La SAF (Sociedad de Floristerías Estadounidenses) ofrece información de marketing, apoyo frente al gobierno, inteligencia industrial y mejores prácticas para todos los participantes en la industria floral de los EE. UU. La conferencia anual de SAF incluye cuatro días de educación, contactos, concursos, presentaciones de nuevos productos florales y tecnológicos, honores y competencias. Para cada competencia, tres jueces – un minorista, un mayorista y un productor – otorgan puntos a flores cortadas en cada categoría de producto. Una variedad con un puntaje alto tiene un alto potencial de ventas porque se adapta a cada uno de los segmentos del juez. Más de 95 empresas participaron en la Competencia de Variedades Sobresalientes con más de 250 variedades. Dümmen Orange, junto con varios socios productores, participó en la Competencia de Variedades Sobresalientes con una selección de las mejores flores de corte para el mercado norteamericano. ¡Los resultados fueron increíbles! Se registraron 13 productos de Dümmen Orange, 12 de los cuales fueron premiados con Blue Ribbon (42-50 puntos) o Red Ribbon (41-34 puntos). Además, nuestros socios productores recibieron un total de 13 cintas azules y rojas. Bas Pellenaars, Director Comercial de América Latina en Dümmen Orange afirma: “Me enorgullece ver que ninguno de los participantes en la competencia se toma la competencia a la ligera. Ellos se preparan con meses de anticipación para participar con el producto de mas alta calidad y dedican horas para tener todos los detalles correctos, incluso hasta minutos antes de que se acabe el plazo. Ganar tantas cintas es un gran reconocimiento de la calidad de nuestra genética y la calidad de los productos cultivados por nuestros socios de cadena y colegas”. Christa Boerlage, Directora de Producto de Flores Cortadas en Norteamérica para Dümmen Orange, agrega: “Siempre es un gran placer asistir a la Convención anual SAF y participar en la Competencia de Variedades Sobresalientes, porque nos da la oportunidad de conectar con floristas minoristas así como con contactos mayoristas y cultivadores para aprender más sobre sus preferencias “.

The SAF (Society of American Florists) provides marketing, government advocacy, industry intelligence and best practices information for all participants in the US floral industry. The annual SAF conference contains four days of education, networking, competitions, presentations of new floral and tech products, honors. For each competition, three judges – a retailer, a wholesaler, and a grower – award points to cut flowers and potted plants in each product category. A variety with a high score has high sales potential because it tailors to each of the judge’s segments. Over 95 companies entered the Outstanding Varieties Competition with more than 250 varieties. Dümmen Orange, together with several grower partners, entered the Outstanding Varieties Competition with a selection of top-billing cut flowers for the North American market. The results were amazing! Thirteen Dümmen Orange products were entered, of which 12 were awarded with either a Blue Ribbon (highest jury score) or a Red Ribbon (runner up jury score). In addition, our grower partners were awarded with a grand total of 13 Blue and Red Ribbons. Bas Pellenaars, Commercial Director Latin America at Dümmen Orange states, “It makes me proud to see that none of the participants in the competition take the competition lightly. They prepare months ahead to participate with the best quality product and spend hours on getting every detail right, until minutes before the deadline runs out. Winning so many ribbons is a great acknowledgement of the quality of our genetics and the quality of the products grown by our chain partners and colleagues!” Christa Boerlage, Product Manager Cut Flowers North America at Dümmen Orange adds: “It’s always a great pleasure attending the annual SAF Convention and participating in the Outstanding Varieties Competition, because it gives us the opportunity to connect with retail florists as well as wholesale contacts and growers and learn more about their preferences.”

Recibimos premios por 12 de los 13 productos con que participamos Columbus, Ohio (EE. UU.), 26 de septiembre de 2018 | Dümmen Orange, hibridador líder y productor de plantas jóvenes, fue recompensado por sus flores de corte de alta calidad al ganar varios premios durante la conferencia anual de SAF 2018 en Palm Springs, California, EE. Gerente Activo Asset Manager Recientes desarrollos en el comercio de flores – algunos datos desde Alemania Matthias Hucke es Consejero Ejecutivo del FBI (Flora Blumenimport und Handels eG), una cooperativa de importación y compra formada por trece mayoristas de flores de corte en Alemania y Suiza. Matthias Hucke El volumen total del mercado de flor cortada en el año 2016, creció, según los últimos datos de AMI (Sociedad de Información del Mercado Agrario) en un 2,5%, esto es, € 8.700’000.000. En el último año bajó un 1,2%. Esto significa que se facturaron el año pasado € 8.600.000.000, de acuerdo con los precios del comercio al por menor en flor cortada y planta ornamental (planta de interior y planta de jardín). El porcentaje de las flores cortadas corresponde a un 34,5% que equivale a € 3.000.000.000 por lo tanto las ventas se han mantenido constantes desde el año 2013. Estadísticamente cada habitante de Alemania gastó € 36,00 en flor cortada. De estos € 36,00 el 60% corresponde a ramos de un solo tipo de flor y el 40% a ramos de flores mezcladas. El porcentaje de compra de ramos de un solo tipo de flor ha crecido continuamente en los últimos años sin embargo y considerando el incremento de precios durante este mismo periodo se constata una reducción del volumen de ventas en el mercado alemán. Aunque los consumidores privados incrementan sus compras en los supermercados y las tiendas de descuento, las floristerías siguen siendo la fuente de compra más importante a pesar de que este año bajaron sus ventas en un 1%. El 65% del consumo se efectúa en floristerías (445), el 10% en jardinerías, el 5% en centros de jardinería y el 6% en mercados lo que equivale a un 37% del volumen total de ventas. La parte cuantitativa de flores de corte en el comercio estacionario aumenta paulatinamente mientras que el comercio online con un 4% del consumo y un 2% de la cantidad total se mantienen al mismo nivel desde hace dos años. La demanda interna del consumo de flores en Alemania se cubre más y más por medio de compras espontáneas en supermercados, mientras que los ramos para ocasiones especiales se compran en floristerías especializadas. Esto refleja la tendencia común, que indica que el consumidor alemán no solo compra pastelería, fruta y verdura sino también flores.

Según un análisis de Royal Flora Holland llevado a cabo en 24.000 hogares alemanes, las compras para regalar flores son cada vez más importantes y han aumentado en un 6% el año pasado. El precio medio de compra para un ramo de flores en una floristería es de $13.77 y aumentó en un 15% desde 2013. Los consumidores pierden el interés en flores baratas mientras al mismo tiempo están dispuestos a gastar dinero en ramos más caros. El aumento porcentual en supermercados es inferior y se sitúa en aproximadamente en un 13%. Aquí los consumidores gastan un promedio de € 4,33. Mientras en otros países europeos las diez clases de flores más importantes mantienen aproximadamente una cuota de mercado similar, en Alemania el 59% de la totalidad de las compras corresponden a rosas y el 10% a tulipanes, siendo los dos grupos de productos de mayor importancia. El negocio descendente en las floristerías especializadas está acompañado de un importante problema de personal. Si al cambio de siglo aún había 9000 personas que querían ser floristas en Alemania, el año pasado quedaban solamente 3000. Aún considerando que, según un estudio a largo plazo realizado por el psicólogo Howard Gartner, los jardineros y floristas son las personas más contentas en su profesión, cada vez menos gente quiere ejercerlas. Los problemas de personal lo comparten muchos sectores no solo en Alemania, también en muchos países europeos, pero son especialmente significantes en el sector verde. El sueldo es comparativamente bajo y los horarios de trabajo poco afables para los empleados. En empresas holandesas y alemanas no solo faltan floristas, sino también colaboradores como comisionistas, conductores y personal de ventas especializado. Esta escasez de personal en el sector se va a extender. Ocasiona nuevas oportunidades para los productores en países de cultivo, que pueden pensar en nuevas prestaciones de servicio para sus clientes más allá del cultivo clásico.

Domestic demand for flower consumption in Germany is covered more and more by spontaneous purchases in supermarkets, while special-occasion bouquets are rather purchased from specialized flower shops. This reflects the common trend, which indicates that the German consumer not only buys pastry, fruit and vegetables but also flowers. According to an analysis carried out by Royal Flora Holland, with a sample of 24,000 German homes, purchases to give flowers as a present, are increasingly important and have increased by 6% last year. The average purchase price for a bouquet of flowers at a flower shop is $ 13.77, and has increased by 15% since 2013. Consumers are losing interest in cheap flowers while, at the same time, they are more willing to spend money on more expensive bouquets. The percentage increase in supermarkets is lower and stands at approximately 13%; there, consumers spend an average of € 4.33.
Recent developments in the flower trade - some data from Germany According to the latest information from AMI (Agricultural Market Information Society), the total volume of the cut flower market in 2016 grew by 2.5%, that is, € 8,700’000,000. Expo Flor Ecuador 2018 Una experiencia inolvidable

La feria internacional EXPO FLOR ECUADOR 2018 tuvo lugar en el Centro de Convenciones Metropolitano de Quito en el Parque Bicentenario, del 19 al 21 de septiembre del presente año. En esta primera edición se recibieron a más de 1600 compradores de flores, representando a más de 50 nacionalidades del mundo. Expo Flor Ecuador 2018 fue un éxito no solo por los más de 2000 visitantes sino por la belleza de las flores expuestas. Como lo señala Alejandro Martínez, Presidente Ejecutivo, “La organización de la feria inició hace dos años, ha sido un reto grande lo que implica trabajo en equipo, coordinado y organizado por la Asociación Nacional de Productores y Exportadores de Flores del Ecuador, EXPOFLORES”. La feria Expo Flor Ecuador 2018 confirmó el compromiso, esfuerzo y dedicación del sector floricultor. Los más de 123 expositores demostraron al mundo la belleza y encanto de las flores ecuatorianas. Entre los expositores encontramos a todos los actores que forman parte de la cadena de valor como: fincas productoras de flores, obtentores, operadores
