A thousand years ago in a small village called Revilla de SantullĂĄn, in the Palentine Mountains, lived a boy named Marcelo. He was five and very smart. His parents worked very hard to make sure there was food on the table everyday.

One day Marcelo told his mother, Paulina, that he wanted to go with the other boys and girls to learn to read and write. Paulina talked to Marcelo’s father, Juan, and they decided it was a great idea. At the end of summer, because there weren’t any schools back then, Marcelo went to a neighbour’s house to learn. The woman taught the whole village to read and write.

This same year, they started to build a Romanesque church in the village. After leaving his teacher’s house, Marcelo liked to watch the bricklayers, carpenters, stone masons, blacksmiths and all the rest of the people that helped build a church.

One day he had a great idea. He wanted to work on the church to help his parents. He talked to Micael, the building manager, and asked for a job. At first Micael laughed at him because he was so small but Marcelo asked and asked so many times that Micael gave in. He named him “building apprentice for Romanesque churches and every week he would be paid an allowance.

Everyday after leaving his teacher’s house he went to the construction site and did as he was told. –“Marcelo! Go fetch water for the mortar,” –said the bricklayer. –“Marcelo! Go get some nails to nail the wood,” –said the carpenter.
–“Marcelo! Tell the blacksmith that I need a hammer,” –said the man working on the roof.

As the walls of the church grew taller and taller, Marcelo learned more and more. He learned how to nail wood together, how to lay the roof tiles, how to carve stone with a hammer and chisel, how rounded arches were made and more.

Since he learned so quickly, every Friday Micael let Marcelo play with the other children.
They jumped rope, looked for frogs in the river, played with spinning tops, played Ring around the Rosie, and made tree forts.

One day, when Marcelo went home, he saw his father on the roof with a worried look. –“Hello son! There is a big hole in the roof and it is falling in. The first snowfall will be coming soon. I don’t know how to fix it. I don’t have any materials either,” his father said as he looked sadly at the hole.
Marcelo had the answer. He had learned so much while working at the church that he knew how to fix it. Since they didn’t have wood, nails or tools he would ask Micael for help.

The next day, he talked to Micael and told him about the hole in the roof. He also told him that he knew how to fix it but he needed materials and tools.
Micael let him take whatever he needed only if he promised not to climb up on the roof because he was too small and could fall. He would have to tell his father how to fix the roof from the ground below.

Marcelo returned home and his father was very happy to see the wood, nails, hammer and saw. Juan climbed up onto the roof and did whatever Marcelo told him. –“First, remove the broken wood with this saw and hammer.”
–“Very good,” said Marcelo, “now you have to cut the new wood to cover up the hole.” –“Now nail together the cut wood with this hammer and these nails.”
- “Great, Dad. Now you only have to lay the hay over the wood and it will be ready to handle the weight of the winter snow.”

When Juan finished everything, he climbed down from the roof and gave Marcelo a big hug and a kiss. He told him how happy he was that his son was so smart, obedient and such a hard worker.

After a few years they finished building the church and Marcelo from Revilla wasn’t a “building apprentice for Romanesque churches” anymore. He became a builder.
When he grew up he became so famous that all the towns around called him to build marvellous churches. For this reason there are so many beautiful and well-made Romanesque churches in the area of Aguilar de Campoo. Today they are still standing after a thousand years.

And they all lived happily ever after, but the story doesn´t end here...
