[ Interview with Nick (Noble) from 93MillionMilesFromTheSun by Diego Centuriรณn ]
WE ARE A SHOEGAZE BAND
3
If there is a band that should discover, if they have not already done so, it is 93MillionMilesFromTheSun. Those lovers fuzzier shoegaze and bordering the drone is a band that can’t stop listening. With new technologies we are able to with just one click listen to your music, but here let glimpse his thoughts, something that is not easy. The band from Doncaster (England) is formed with Nick Mainline (guitar / effects / vocals), Kenno (bass / effects), Jase Burns (drums / loops). Born in 2007, comes to us this August with a new split with the band Presents For Sally. And a live album "93 Live" edited independently. We enter by a colorful tube to a world where everything becomes blurred but bright lights. Hello, it's a pleasure to have the opportunity of this interview. Why and how it is born the name of the band? Hi Diego, The name came from a Swervedriver song called “93 million miles from the sun (and counting)” I was looking for something different that also fitted in with what we were trying to do and Swervedriver were one of my favourite bands so i went with that. What are your memories of when the band formed? We were never really supposed to become a band, or at least that wasn’t the plan. I had done a few tracks myself at home and I started a MySpace page and put them on it. I started to get quite a few messages from people saying how much they liked the tracks and then I got a message from Michael Savage (The Fauns) asking if he could include the track ‘Take Me Away’ on a compilation album he was putting out called ‘The Secret Garden’ Shortly after that he asked if we wanted to come and play the launch night for the album in Bristol. At this time it was still only me so I asked my good friend Rob Hogg who I’d been in bands with before if he would do the gig with me on bass and we went and played to a backing track of drums and noises and that was the beginning of the band. How much has changed the band since the early
years? Oh quite a bit. It’s constantly been changing from the start. We have had many different members and gone from drum machines to drums and back to drum machines again. The core has always just been me on guitar and vocals. Rob was with me on bass for the first three albums but our current bassist Kenno had previously played drums for us. The current line-up is myself on guitar and vocal, Kenno on bass, Jase Burns on drums and Glynn Fox on second guitar and keyboards. You have created and published a lot of music from the beginning of the band. How long have not heard his first recordings? Not for a long time but I never really listen to 93 stuff after it’s finished. The thing about the first album is that I was still learning how to record and mix on the equipment I had. Some of the songs on that album are great but the overall sound is lacking. I think I was maybe trying too hard on the first album but it never really ended up sounding like I wanted it to. What published work you like more? As I say I never really listen back to 93 stuff. The last thing I’ve recorded is usually my favourite. Northern Sky is probably the album I’ve listened most and is probably our best work as an album. What is the record cost him most? Not for its value, but by getting the sound. Everything that we’ve put out has been recorded the same way. It’s all been deliberately lo-fi and recorded in my little home studio, 93 Laboratories. Our Drummer Jase now has a professional studio called Supernova Studios in Doncaster so we’ve been lucky enough to have the use of that when needed. What song have never played live and why? There’s lots of songs we’ve never played live for one reason or another. Usually there are quite a few guitar parts on the tracks and until recently I’ve been the only person playing guitar when we play live. We’ve always tried to sound different and raw when we play so usually the
songs sound different live. Some songs I’d like us to play in the future are July Sky and Lost of the first album, Tall Buildings, Sorrow Song and Echoes of Northern Sky, Drinking Bleach and Everything Today of Towards The Light and Watch Her Fall, New Day Comes and Nothing Left Inside of Fall Into Nothing. For people who do not know you, What songs do not have to miss within a "Greatest Songs of 93MillionMilesFromTheSun"? I’m very proud of some of the b-sides that have come out on the EP’s. They are all on the internet and available on various download sites, bandcamp etc. We did a download only double album which has some of our best songs on and a few more obscure ones as well. Yesterday Morning, The Times We Have Are Now, Darkestar, Take Me Away, Waiting There, When You Come, All You’ve Found You’ve Left Behind, Sonic Assault, Tomorrow, Skyfall (Take Your Time), Drinking Bleach, Reflections, Watch Her Fall, Sunshine Girl, See Forever, When I Look Up, I See Nothing, I’m Waiting and Edge of Nowhere would all definitely make a best of. What can you tell us of "Darkness Inside"? The idea of the EP first came about when our good friend Matt Etherton from Presents For Sally asked if we’d be interested in doing a split EP with them. I spoke with Al Boyd from Wrong Way Records about the project and we decided we’d record four brand new songs for it. We always have plenty of material lying around that we haven’t used and there were lots of songs from the last album that never made it but I really fancied doing new stuff. We worked on the songs for about four weeks and we were really happy with the results. The whole EP is stunning and Wrong Way Records have done a great job with it. The Presents For Sally tracks are amazing as well.
How would you define your music? I guess we are a straight shoegaze band really. When we started out that was always the aim. At the time it wasn’t anything like as popular as it is now. I’d been in many bands in the past and I’d always tried to bring elements of shoegaze into the sound but this was the first time that it was strictly that. Can we expect a new album soon? Well we are currently recording at the moment. In fact we are very close to completing the stuff. We’ve got about 16 songs that were doing and it’s all sounding pretty good and a little bit different. There are a lot more keyboards present on the songs. We’re not sure if it’ll end up as an album or when it might be released if it is but keep your eyes out for more info soon. What are the plans for this 2016? We are going to finish off the recording and concentrate on that for the time being. We have no plans for gigs for the rest of the year except for maybe a one off hometown gig in Doncaster before the end of 2016. I’m hopeful that 2017 is going to be a great year for us. It marks the 10th anniversary of us as a band and 10 years since our first album came out. Hopefully we can play plenty of shows and hopefully some gigs abroad if everything comes together.
Thank you very much for the time given to answer our questions. My pleasure Cheers Nick (Noble)
