NOVA FLARES SONIC MEMOIRS
[ Interview With Jason Wagers from Nova Flares by Diego Centuriรณn. Photographs: Destiny Robb]
SONIC MEMOIRS
A new band that is born, a new star in an infinite firmament. A new light. A new bright memory, leaving its mark, creating a memory of what it was, what it is and what it will be... Nova Flares, a new project that leaves its mark, which comes to us just before the release of its debut EP, just born, with his first single advance. With you Nova Flares... Hello Jason, thank you for accepting this interview. To begin this interview I would like you to explain the name of the project. Well, to get completely technical, a Nova Flare is the flare up caused by the collision of two stars after they explode that slowly fades from view giving the perception of a new much brighter star. A visual memory, if you will. That is the same way I thought of these tracks when I was writing them. “Aesthetic audio diaries” or “sonic memoirs”. The songs on this e.p are entirely instrumental and meant to take on whatever meaning the listener feels when hearing the tracks. When Was Nova Flares Born? June 2017. You just released a debut single, "Gut Splinter", how was this single received? I think it was received very well! I still think it’s being digested, but the feedback that I’ve gotten thus far has been very good. This song sets the perfect tone for this project and all future releases. It’s the quintessential Nova Flares track. How is this project born? My close friend started getting back into filming in early June 2017 and brought it up that I should write music for the music videos that he wanted to make. We brainstormed a lot and talked about what we wanted in the videos for a few weeks when I finally decided to start recording the first song, which derived from this little riff I had been playing for a few days. While recording the track I just simply thought of images and tried to play them out. I had never really recorded like that before either. After I recorded the first song I really li-
ked it so I just kept recording non-stop all summer long until I had an albums worth of songs written and recorded. Just whatever I felt like recording that day, I would do it. The funny thing is that it was almost unintentional. This music was just coming out of me damn near every day. The videos we talked about never got made, but they were the idea that inspired the creation of these songs and once the inspiration had occurred, from there it was “blast off”. For those who do not know this new project, how would you define the music of Nova Flares? Highly cinematic shoegazey music with a surf & neo-psych touch. The songs all start out start small and build compositionally as the track finishes, making it feel like pressure leading to an explosion of color. When it comes to writing for Nova Flares, what inspires you? Always, listening to other music. Finding more bands that I like and hearing what other people are doing around the world inspires me to be outgoing and unique with my talents. We know that by the middle of the year the debut album arrives. In what process is that album today? It’s actually just an instrumental E.P that is being released this time, but I will say that all of the tracks for the E.P are mixed, mastered and ready to go. I have another 4 or 5 songs (not on the EP) recorded that I am still mixing and mastering and I plan on releasing those in the future. Nova Flares may even find a vocalist somewhere down the road, so I want to save some of my material for the future. What can you tell us about that album? The EP is going to set the tone for all future music to come from Nova Flares. I can tell you that it’s full of emotion, passion and memorable guitar melodies that go great with driving on a pretty day. This is moody summer music at it’s finest.

How long have you been working on this album? I’ve been working on the EP since I started recording June 2017. What plans are there for this year? This year I am stationing myself back in Louisville Ky where I will be personally collaborating with a friend musician/producer named Casey Powell. He is going to further my education in studio recording for the year and make some cool collaborations with me. So I’m going to be learning and creating all year. After that, I am moving to Austin Texas in June 2019. Where can we find Nova Flares? First and foremost: www.novaflares.com Bandcamp, Youtube, Vimeo, Spotify, Apple
Music, Itunes, iheartradio, Deezer, Google Play and most other streaming platforms. We appreciate this interview and you have this space for you to tell us what you want. I just wanna thank you for your interest in the music and anyone else out there that likes what I’m doing. I work 40 hours a week on top of making this music, so I break my balls getting it all finished. I love and enjoy it of coarse, but I want to emphasize that anytime you express to me that you like it, I literally light up inside, because this is my lifes work, always. It feels great to get feedback. So if anyone wants to say anything to me ever, feel free to email me at novaflaresband@ gmail.com . Thanks to you and best of luck!
