Investments in China’s rail network By Angel Maestro

China’s railway network, one of the busiest in the world, projected from 2015 to increase the number of separate lines specifically between freight and passenger. As discussed on several occasions the increasing freight transport in Chinese railways, especially the heavy coal traffic. China is the largest producer of coal is causing traffic jams in some sections. Despite the introduction of new electric and diesel locomotives, and large-scale introduction of 100ton wagons, some routes are saturated. The Ministry of Railways has plans to build new high-speed lines, but with speeds up to 200 km / h instead of the much more expensive lines of 300 km / h and more of that in private, Chinese reliable sources acknowledge that has built too many. The new network of expressways to 200 km / h will consist of 4 major lines in two directions east-west and northsouth another 4. Are gradually transferring to proceed to conventional lines present the almost exclusive freight trains thus decongest the current saturation at some points. PHOTO: Alancrh

NEWS

A bit of history late nineteenth century

the mining utrillense was the target of several business groups seeking to enhance the extraction of lignite mines in the area, being mainly the problem of geographic isolation of this location with respect to major rail lines national wide. On 14 March 1900 the corporation was formed “Utrillas Mines and Railway” (MFU), with an initial capital of 12 million pesetas. After taking control of holdings go most important coalfield Utrillas, studies began to plot a railway that would link this small town to the national network turolense broad gauge, to export its coal across the country. The final resolution to the alternatives was the choice of meter gauge line Utrillas-Zaragoza, with a branch from station to station Zaragoza Miraflores (on the outskirts of Zaragoza) to transship coal to MZA line.

Railroad construction along its 125 kilometers met several times with the geographical problem of mountain areas. This problem was especially noticeable in the final kilometers of the line to the town of Utrillas. To solve it quickly and economically effective, officials decided to establish the terminus of the meter gauge railway in an esplanade Utrillas 4 kilometers from where they built the coal washery. From there, he built a small mining line (600mm gauge) 8 km to the site called “Mina Sur”. Passing through the center of the village of Utrillas, and through a series of branches, the line linking the different exploitations around this town to transport coal to the utility room and move to meter gauge. The mining railroad (which was up to 9 steam locomotives line and diesel locomotives distributed by several different stations and branches) opened in 1904 and remained in service until 1966, when it was closed along with the metergauge railway, replacing both rail services for trucking.

Utrillas after MFU Although the railway was

closed in 1966, lignite mining continued until the 1980s, when they were closed the last remaining active mines in Utrillas. Both railroads were completely dismantled shortly after its closure, but miraculously escaped the 9 steam locomotives who served between Mina Sur and Lavaderos, which were set aside in a small round with passenger car that was used in the line for services special (nicknamed “Tram”). Most of these locomotives were sold to private collectors Germans and British, who still remain in the facility as the Museum of Transport and Technology in Berlin, or in parks and mining track circuits for tourist service in England and Germany where he still most of them serve on active duty in perfect working order. In Spain currently only two copies have been, the engine 1 “Hulla” (which was sold to private collector Don Jose Maria Valero Zaragoza), and the locomotive “31” which was purchased by the City of Utrillas and commissioning pedestal when the remaining locomotives sold abroad. It is noteworthy that the passage of a large company like MFU by a small population and modest as was the Utrillas early twentieth century, completely transformed the urban and social landscape of the town. It only served to grow economically and demographically Utrillas, but also endowed it with facilities and services that accounted for rising living standards of the population: schools, hospital, industry, new developments, direct train to Zaragoza, etc.

These tailings were returned to replant flora after winning parkland allowing the population. The next part of the project, with Miner Plan funds, was the restoration of the old hospital MFU (1920) and the adjacent building of the old schools. The hospital has been converted into the Museum of Science and Archaeology Utrillas Mining, while schools are now a multipurpose building that functions as a library, a conference room with capacity for 200 people and now home to the old company file MFU. This work culminated in the reconstruction of the full size replica of the old headframe of the well, which was demolished and sold for scrap by the company that was responsible for dismantling the facility. Currently we are working to buildings Pozo Santa Barbara and the environment of the park, including also a new project in the area of museum to be located in the first schools built in Utrillas MFU, located at the entrance of the Santa Barbara Pozo (whose building is now restored). The initial idea, based on Miner Plan funds, was to enable tracing in this section and put way, so that museum visitors could walk out the back door of the hospital directly to the train line, the it still exists-door that was used to pick up injured miners were transported by train to the hospital. From there, about 200 yards ahead, the train line passes through the forecourt of the Mina Santiago, where they could take advantage in the future to do some stretch of mine visited, as in other museums. After visiting Santiago Mina, the journey will continue along the south Utrillas. After passing under an old pedestrian bridge still exists, you enter a long trench that leads to a constant stretch ascent to one of the most beautiful spots of the track: a horseshoe curve that rotates 180 degrees and puts us on track parallel to the trace again, but with enough feet to the mountain cattle. Conclusion The Mining Rail

project Utrillas has surprised many people, enthusiasts and not railway enthusiasts, as it is taking place in a time of economic crisis in which pessimism pervades us and major projects (especially cultural) have been completely paralyzed. Utrillas City Council, due to its sensitivity to the historical and industrial heritage of his people, has taught us a clear example of how imagination, willpower and cunning to find resources can boost a project without investment billions of other projects have. Since it is not convenient sit idly waiting for the economic situation improves, the City of Utrillas keep trying to go ahead with the project, while the Friends of the Museum Utrillas Mining continues to fire the Hulla to ensure the maintenance and ensure proper operation. Digital Station Z21 AUTHOR: REDACCIĂ“N

The arrival on the market of this new digital station created by ROCO and Fleischmann, has revolutionized the concept of digital centers and how to use them. The evolution of the digital tech-

nology is continuing, with a big bet and quality improvement by major manufacturers, reason that in recent years we have witnessed the emergence of several digital stations equipped with color screens, systems tactile, motor controls, wireless systems, etc., which greatly facilitate the game and control models. Despite the ease of use, complexity and choice of configuration options make these modern stations something dark and difficult for many fans, still reticent to integrate these systems in their models. 46

TESTS

The Z21 station is a revolution in the field of digital stations, connecting via a WiFi network locomotives and electrical accessories with our Smartphone or Ipad, dispensing knobs and additional controls. Along with the Z21 center, is given a wireless WiFi router of the brand TP-Link, and the necessary current transformers and cable connection between the station Z21 and the router. The connection of these two elements is simple, just attach them using the supplied LAN cable, which is connected between the LAN ports on both devices.

From top to bottom: The first thing we find when opening the box, is the Z21 station. Below is the router and adapter The elements that comprise the system are the station and its power adapter and the router, along with its power adapter and a cable connection to the station.

47

TESTS

The Z21 system is fully compatible with the controls multiMAUS and Lokmaus 2, making it easy to use and allows to take advantage existing controls.

Rear view of the whole, where we can see the connections between the central station Z21 and the router.

The control system recognizes RailCom Z21 and the LocoNet bus, CAN bus, and booster. It has main track access, as well as the programming track and bus Sniffer. After connecting the station and router, had to use the most important tool of the system: their app. Indeed, to use the power we have a device with Android or Apple. For these devices from AppleStore downloaded or from the Android well as the corresponding app PlayStore generated by Roco and Fleischmann. 48

Station Z21 connections

The Z21 mobile app is downloaded easily and free. You do not need a central Z21 for download, this will allow a facility to visit a friend or a club and

with a Z21 station, we can start playing with our command after entering its network, we also import our locomotives and take them along with the mobile app to other models.

App application allows us to manage our locomotives library quick and easy, configure its digital functions naturally lead them easily, much like using your smartphone or tablet. After downloading the app on our device will access the configuration screen where we indicate the key of the wifi router to access at your network, once identified, the Z21 control program allows us to start playing immediately. This application includes a small database of locomotives, which can be expanded and modified to our liking. Selecting the desired locomotive at the bottom, we now have digital functions and traction control, we handle sliding your finger on the screen. A second option is driving through the use of a real cockpit.

Other options available for smartphones are the ability to read and write CV’s, both general track, as in the programming track. We can control track switches and easy signals in our layout. This you draw the elements on the screen, using a database of devices, or take a photo of the installation and it will mark the electromagnetic devices to configure, which will be controlled by the central Z21 now driven from our device and easy In the case of using a device such as Ipad the usability expand as their screen allows the use of two driving controls either simultaneously using a driving cotrol and turnouts and control and signals together . 49

TESTS By the moment the use of the app designed for Ipad type device is the most advanced. The main screen shows the different options available, such as the configuration of locomotive cabs downloads, programming decoders, settings, etc..

The locomotives setting screen shows the list of available locomotives in the system. Clicking on one of them we access its settings, where you can assign a driver’s cab, indicate their digital address, type of decoder, digital steps and available features such as lights, sound, etc..

In the mode of use, it is possible to have two simultaneous controls for different locomotives, or use one part of the screen to show the electromagnetic elements. In control locomotives will slide speed control to move the locomotive and set its direction of travel so easy and simple. It is also very easy to activate its functions as shown in this picture.

50

TESTS

Different views of driving cabs for electric locomotives, diesel trains and steam locomotives.

This device also supports the use of real driving cabs, for downloading the cab, allowing a realistic level of play, and that we can act upon the control of the locomotive , such as in the reality.

The driver’s cab can be expanded by clicking on the controls and access a larger image and for full use.

CONCLUSIONS We are facing a innovative digital estation, which will mark the way to go for other manufacturers, and opening the doors to this technology.
